Robert Dennis Bartel, 75, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 2:32 a.m., Wednesday, July 28th, 2021 peacefully at McPherson Hospital.

Bob was born in Goessel, Kansas on May 5, 1946, a son of Roland J. and Matilda Emma (Rempel) Bartel.

Bob attended Lehigh grade school and graduated from Lehigh High School, Lehigh, Kansas in 1964. He then attended and graduated from Bethel College, North Newton, Kansas with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts.

He was a member of First Mennonite Church, McPherson.

Through the years Bob owned and operated Bartel Insurance Company, McPherson, Kansas for 22 years. Later he went back to school and got his teaching degree and taught at Hillsboro High School for a number of years until he retired in 2008. After retirement Robert and his sister-in-law owned and operated LB Estate Sales, Newton, Kansas.

Bob really enjoyed life, along with cars, trains, airplanes, museums, reading, art, music, talking with people, telling stories, anything his children and grandchildren were involved in, he loved to laugh, and spend time with his friends and family, especially his grandkids.

Robert D. Bartel was united in marriage to Sharon E. Goossen on August 24, 1968 in Hillsboro, Kansas. This young couple established their first home together in North Newton, Kansas. The couple was blessed with the birth of 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters, Shaun, Sheri, Shannon and Sheldon.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Sharon Bartel, of McPherson, Kansas; his children, Shaun Bartel and his wife Debra, of Newton, Kansas, Sheri Lepard and her husband Alan, of Sylvania, Ohio, Shannon Bartel, of Newton, Kansas and Sheldon Bartel and his wife Spring, of McPherson, Kansas; his brother John Bartel and his wife Lila, of Topeka, Kansas and his sister Mary Johnson and her husband Bill, of North Newton, Kansas.

He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren, Sarah Bartel, Megan Bartel, Nick Lepard, Markus Lepard, Haylen Bartel, Jaxson Bartel and Xander Bartel.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at First Mennonite Church, McPherson, Kansas.

Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, McPherson, Kansas, with Pastor Rose Marie Zook Barber officiating.

Mary Ellen (Yoder) Howell, a pillar of the Monitor Church community west of McPherson, KS, entered eternal rest in her residence at the Cedars on July 27, 2021. She was 89 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Wally Howell (2005); their oldest child, Mark Harold Howell (2011); and her brother, Bob Yoder (1984). She is survived by Mark’s wife Nancy (Heath) Howell and their two sons, Andrew Joseph and Benjamin Wallace, of Wichita Falls, Texas; her daughter Kathy Howell of Corvallis, Oregon; her son Matthew and daughter-in-law Tina Howell of Greenfield, Massachusetts; and her daughter Amy and son-in-law Jay Warner of rural McPherson, Kansas. She is also survived by her brother’s wife Elsie, their four daughters--Janet, Rebecca, Gail, and Karen--and their families.

Mary Ellen was born in McPherson on April 28, 1932, the second child of Dayton and Hazel (Kessler) Yoder, and was raised in the home that she would live in for almost eighty years, less than half a mile south of the Monitor Church of the Brethren in Groveland Township of McPherson County. As a girl, she attended school for eight years in a one-room schoolhouse that she could walk to from her home. While attending McPherson High School in the late 40’s, she stayed in town with relatives and friends of the family and graduated at the top of her class in 1950.

She went on to McPherson College for her first two undergraduate years and then transferred to Kansas State, where she met Wally on a blind date during their senior year. Mary Ellen graduated summa cum laude from K-State in 1954 with a major in botany. That fall, she began a very short-lived public school teaching career at Conway Springs High School, resigning that position before marrying Wally at the Monitor Church on November 20, 1954. As his new bride, Mary Ellen was able to join Wally when he was sent to Germany as a lieutenant with the U.S. Army. Mary Ellen gave birth to their first child, Mark, at an Army hospital in Würzburg.

When the young family returned to Kansas in 1956, Mary Ellen’s parents moved to another farm house a few miles north, so that she and Wally could establish their home where Mary Ellen had been raised, a house built in the early 1900’s by the brother of her grandfather, J.J. Yoder. Wally began farming with Mary Ellen’s father, growing wheat and milo on approximately 1000 acres of land. For the first twenty years or so, they also raised livestock: beef cattle, pigs, and chickens.

As a mother, Mary Ellen was always there for her four children--Mark (born in 1955), Kathy (born in 1958), Matthew (born in 1962), and Amy (born in 1965)--sending them off to school every day with the parting words, “Mommy loves you, Jesus is near, and don’t forget to be kind.” These essential values were reinforced by Mary Ellen’s devotion to Bible study and prayer at home, as well as her kindness and outreach to neighbors and visitors to Monitor, often inviting them home after church for Sunday dinner. Mary Ellen loved to have the family gather around the piano to sing hymns, as well as old and new popular songs. Along with instilling a love of music, she shared her passion for lifelong learning by involving her children in the local 4-H club and taking her family on Kansas history tours. Wally and Mary Ellen also passed on their values of hard work and resourcefulness by involving their children directly in many of the chores and fieldwork of the farm.

A community leader in many areas related to church and education, Mary Ellen proudly carried on the tradition of the Monitor Farm Bureau Unit that her mother started in 1929, even as its name changed from the Monitor Farm Bureau Unit to the Monitor Home Demonstration Unit, then to the Monitor Extension Unit, and now the Monitor Family Community Education (FCE) Unit. She was instrumental in starting the Vacation Bible School program at Monitor in 1970, and sustaining it through the many decades to follow. At the Monitor Church, Mary Ellen was both a Bible School and Sunday School teacher, as well as accompanist on the piano and organ, collaborating for many decades with Arlene Yoder. Mary Ellen’s role of church musician at Monitor started when she was still a teenager and continued until she was well into her 80’s.

The family farm tradition, which began with Mary Ellen’s grandfather in the early 1900’s, continues to this day, with Amy and Jay Warner (her daughter and son-in-law) managing what is now a “Century Farm.” In 1996, Wally and Mary Ellen received state-wide recognition as Master Farmer/Master Farm Homemaker, acknowledging their stewardship of the land and farm community. In 2004, Mary Ellen was awarded the Citation of Merit from McPherson College in recognition of her lifetime achievements and contributions.

In 2012, Mary Ellen made a smooth transition into the Cedars retirement community, where she knew many of her neighbors even before she moved in, including her childhood friend and cousin, Lois Neher, who passed away earlier this year. Life in town suited her well at this stage of her life, and she participated actively in a variety of activities and programs at the Cedars, while continuing to attend lectures, concerts, and plays at the college.

On August 2, a memorial service will be held at the Monitor Church (please wear a mask), beginning at 5:30 pm and followed by a light meal to which all are invited. Mary Ellen will be laid to rest afterwards in the church cemetery, next to her husband Wally, and in close proximity to her son Mark, great-grandfather J.D. Yoder, and many other relatives and friends.

Pratt - Evelyn Pearl Franklin, 87, passed away Monday, July 26, 2021 at Grand Plains Skilled Nursing. She was born on July 19, 1934 in Bridgecreek, Oklahoma to A.J. "Doc" and Della Mae Thompson. Evelyn married Roy Franklin. He preceded her in death in December of 1982 Evelyn graduated from Bridgecreek High School in Oklahoma. She enjoyed crocheting and made many pot holders and afghans. She is survived by her children, Randy Franklin of Pratt; Kim Boles of Choctaw, Oklahoma, Steve Franklin of Pratt and Kenneth (Janet) Franklin of Pratt; grandchildren, Darin Franklin, Bryin (Delta) Franklin, Kayla (Josh) McDowell, Michael Pearson, Kevin Franklin, Kyle (Vicky) Franklin and Grace Epperson; and great-grandchildren, Lauren Franklin, Karson Franklin, Tater Dwyre, MaCaiden Franklin, Wiley Schmidt, Josh McDowell, Jr., Kendall McDowell, Damian McDowell, Connor Franklin, Saige Franklin and Laikyn Franklin. Bobby Duane “Bob” Waddle, 94, passed away Monday, July 26, 2021, at Legend of Hutchinson. He was born October 11, 1926, on the family farm near Abbyville, to Fred Sherman and Edna Pauline (Krauter) Waddle.

Bob was a 1944 graduate of Abbyville High School and a United States Navy veteran who served in the Pacific Theater. He was a farmer/stockman and had served on several community boards, including Farmers Grain Cooperative, Enterprise Township, and Abbyville Booster Club. Bob started playing the guitar at age 14 and continued playing for enjoyment and dances for many years.

On November 3, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Gayle Ailene Foster, in the Abbyville Methodist Church parsonage. They shared over 53 years of marriage before her death on April 9, 2000.

Surviving are: daughters, Rebecca Lindahl and husband Gary of Plevna, and Bonnie Ehling and husband Doyle of Hutchinson; sister, S. Darlene Buck of South Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Shirley Waddle of Enid, OK; five grandchildren, Angela Wilkinson and husband Victor of Hutchinson, Regina Davis and husband Chris of Aledo, TX, Valli Dawn Booe and husband Travis of Hutchinson, Jeremy Lindahl and wife Ruth of Buhler, and Benjamin Ehling and wife Tara of Wentzville, MO; 14 great-grandchildren, Garrett Wilkinson of Boston, MA, Brecken Wilkinson of Hutchinson, Quinn Davis of Rogers, AR, Zack and Lexi Davis of Aledo, TX, Carter and Ayla Booe of Hutchinson, Tanner, Austin, and Gavin Lindahl of Buhler, and Rhett Ehling of Hutchinson, Ryen, Reygan, and Renna Ehling of Wentzville, MO; and special friend, Earlene Dupree of Cimarron.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Richard “Dick” Waddle.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel with Garrett Wilkinson and Michael Ehling presiding. Burial, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard, will be at Abbyville Cemetery.

Gladys Mae Ray, 67, passed away on July 25, 2021 at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie, KS. She was born August 28, 1953 in Stafford, to Fred B. and Irene P. (Pennel) Ridge. Gladys graduated from Stafford High School in 1971 and worked at Jacksons Dairy for over 25 years.&nbsp;She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, good conversation, and shouting BINGO! Gladys is survived by her two children, Jose (Maggie) Ray and Laticia Addis; one brother, Maynard Ridge; one sister, Mary Bellamy; and three grandchildren, Angel Martinez, Lili McKeown and Ivy Addis. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers,&nbsp;David, Ben, and Delmas Ridge. A private graveside service will be held the morning of Friday, July 30, 2021. There will be a Celebration of Life that is open to all on Friday, July 30, 2021 from 6-9 p.m. at the Rice Park Community Building (44 Swarens Street)​.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Gladys Mae Ray, 67, passed away on July 25, 2021 at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie, KS. She was born August 28, 1953 in Stafford, to Fred B. and Irene P. (Pennel) Ridge. Gladys graduated from Stafford High School in 1971 and worked at Jacksons Dairy for over 25 years.&nbsp;She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, good conversation, and shouting BINGO! Gladys is survived by her two children, Jose (Maggie) Ray and Laticia Addis; one brother, Maynard Ridge; one sister, Mary Bellamy; and three grandchildren, Angel Martinez, Lili McKeown and Ivy Addis. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers,&nbsp;David, Ben, and Delmas Ridge. A private graveside service will be held the morning of Friday, July 30, 2021. Eunice Ann Bretz Hunter, 90, long time resident of Council Grove passed into eternity July 26th, 2021 at Diversicare in Council Grove with her daughters, Carla, Kathy, and Christy by her side.

She was born June 29, 1931 in Emporia daughter of Vernon Dean &amp; Ruth Ann (Berger) Bretz. Eunice graduated from Council Grove High School and attended Business College. She married Calvin Carl Hunter on September 10th, 1949.

She had many occupations in Council Grove including secretarial work at Hunter Chevrolet, lifeguard and swim teacher of Red Cross swim lessons in Council Grove. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many dance recital costumes for Jill Fitzgerald Dance Studio. She was best known for working and then owning Bretz Shoe Store at 206 W. Main Council Grove. She was an avid promotor of small town businesses.

She was a member of the Council Grove Chamber of Commerce, Council Grove Christian Church, and Council Grove Country Club for many years. She was Ladies City Golf Champion in 1965. She belonged to and enjoyed several Bridge Clubs. She devoted many hours making quilts for her daughters and grandchildren.

Eunie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family was of utmost importance to her and she treasured her three daughters. She loved watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball and dance. This included 67 consecutive years of going to dance recitals. Eunie loved all sports, playing pitch, reading, and crossword puzzles. She will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Darlene and Donna, and brother Dean.

Eunie is survived by her daughters: Carla Pruitt and husband Don, of Victoria, Kathy Litke and husband Darrell and Christine Ziegenhirt and husband Donnie, all of Council Grove; 9 grandchildren: Alycia Straight (Dane), Amanda Pruitt, Dara Fillmore (Jason), Dana Reddick (Bobby), Deanna Buttrey (Thomas), Dawn Palmquist (Lucas), Derek Ziegenhirt, Jacob Ziegenhirt, and Casey Cowdin (Troy). 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Shirley Hickman, and many nieces and nephews.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois  to James and Clara (German) Lewis. He married Kimberly (Harms Gadberry) in 1991. He lived in Kansas and Arizona. He attended and was a graduate of Newton High School and Vatterott College. He worked for Walmart and PPMA.  He enjoyed fishing, camping and family time.

Born into a loving family in the rural Windom, KS area, John James Borgstrom came into this world on Saturday, March 3rd, 1951. His parents were school teachers; J. Valerian and Maebert (Nelson) Borgstrom welcomed him as their first child, followed by his sister LuAnn, brother Mark, and baby sister Debbie.

Ironically, John hated school, and yet he made many friends who stayed in contact throughout the years. He was known for his playful nature and enjoyed nothing more than time spent visiting, telling stories, and laughing with friends and family. From childhood, John enjoyed spending time outdoors, which led to his love of farming and camping. After graduation from Little River High School in 1969, he continued to help farm the homestead with his dad, while also attending Salina Area Vo-Tech for a certification in electronics.

Through mutual friends, he was set up on a blind date with the woman who would become the love of his life, Susie. They were married on August 11th, 1978, in Hill City, Kansas, her hometown. Soon after, their oldest daughter Anna was born, followed by son Ash, daughter Holly, and baby Gabe. John loved children, and is fondly remembered for his role as Santa each Christmas for the kids, cousins, nieces and nephews, and eventually for his grandchild, Kora Jo.

As a life-long resident of rural Windom, and an active and faithful member of the Andover Lutheran Church, John was well-loved. He regularly served on church committees, assisted with worship, and led the choir. Co-workers became friends as he worked at MBM in McPherson as a copier repair technician, sold insurance or water softeners, delivered oxygen through Kanox/Airgas in Hutchinson, or drove for BNSF Railroad Railcrew Xpress in Newton. He made many connections through his Ark Valley Good Sams camping club chapter, and also through his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and the ReUse It Center in McPherson.

John’s joy was his family. As his kids left home and began families of their own, John and Susie and the kids all remained close, gathering together and having a meal as often as possible. Even after John became paralyzed in December of 2020, his family stayed close through the months of hospitalization and visited nearly every day. John James Borgstrom left this world peacefully on Sunday, July 25th, 2021, at Hillsboro Community Hospital, beloved by the staff who he came to think of as family.

Marsha (Sloan) McManus of Plano, Texas passed away on July 23, 2021, at the age of 73. She was born on February 28, 1948, to Edward Keith and Dorothy (Nordling) Sloan in McPherson, Kansas. Marsha married Paul McManus on June 1, 1968, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and loved interior design. Marsha had a lifelong passion for charity work and was very active in Chi Omega Christmas in Dallas. She attended Bent Tree Bible Church and was a volunteer teacher in the Bible Study Fellowship. Marsha was extremely outgoing, and she was an adventurous scuba diver and downhill skier.

She is survived by her husband, Paul McManus of Plano, Texas; son, Scott McManus and wife, Liyibeth, of Carrollton, Texas; daughter, Shannon Kearns and husband, John, of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Yelardin McManus, Reese Kearns, and Wesley Kearns; sister, Gail Butler and husband, Fred, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and numerous other loving family and friends.

Marsha was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Steven Kent Sloan.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at Bent Tree Bible Church in Carrollton, Texas. Hillary Frances Zimmer, 71, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2021 at Medical Lodges in Great Bend, Kansas.  Hillary was born on March 15, 1950 in LaCrosse, Kansas to Francis J. Zimmer and Rose M. Zimmer.  He attended school and graduated from LaCrosse, Kansas.

He married Toni Broce in 1973 and divorced in 1976.  To this union he had two children, Malissia and Kristopher.

He married Roberta Wilhelm on January 4, 1982, and they became long time residents of Ellinwood, Kansas.  The couple shared 39 years of marriage together before he passed.

Hillary worked 30+ years for Central Kansas Medical Center in the laundry department and grounds department.  His passion was woodworking, gardening, beekeeping, collecting cans and spending time outdoors.

Survivors include a wife, Roberta Zimmer of Ellinwood, Kansas daughter Malissia D. Pflughoeft, Albert, Kansas, daughter Janelle K. Holle and husband Greg of Beatrice, Nebraska, daughter Rhonda J. Zimmer of Ellinwood, Kansas; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Hillary was preceded in death by his son Kristopher C. Zimmer and a sister Delores M. Andrews.

Hillary will be remembered for being a faithful, steadfast, and hardworking husband, father, and grandfather.

He served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee.  Rich’s Navy unit built runways in Guam and saw action in Vietnam.  He was proud of his country and his service to his country.  Rich was a life member of the VFW in Marion and enjoyed going to the American Legion in Hillsboro.  Rich’s faith was very important to him.  He was a long-time parishioner of Holy Family Parish in Marion.  Rich was nearly always the first person at church on Sunday morning, prayed the Rosary faithfully and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.  

Rich’s loving family includes his loving companion of 31 years Betty Medley of Hillsboro; children James (Heather) Schlehuber of Marion, Sherry Schlehuber of AL, Jeremy Schlehuber of Hillsboro, Denise (Chris) Kostelac of Shawnee, KS, Rick (Tricia) Medley of Valley Center and Terry Medley of Topeka;  grandchildren Elise, Gabriella, Magdalen, Isaac, Samuel and Katharine Schlehuber, Matthew and Josh Schlehuber, Jacob Schlehuber, Avery, Colby, Tasha Kostelac, Russell, Carol, and AJ Medley, Brooke Medley and Jake Medley; and his siblings Larry ( Joyce) Schlehuber of MO. and Anita Hancock of Marion.  Rich passed away at his home on Thursday July 22nd.  He is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Abigail, brother Billy Schlehuber and sister Carole Post.

Jeannine Marie Rinke, 92, of Medicine Lodge, died Sunday, July 25, 2021 in the Long-Term Care Unit at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. Marjorie Louise "Marge" Stillings, 94, of Baldwin City, passed away at 5:58 p.m., Friday, July 23rd, 2021 while in the company of family members, at her daughters home in Baldwin City. Marjorie was born on her parents homestead rural McPherson, Kansas on February 7, 1927, a daughter of Mae Ruth (Siebert) and John Gottleb Schafer. Marjorie attended the Iola grade school, Iola and the McPherson grade schools and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson. Following graduation Marjorie worked for Farmers Alliance Insurance Agency in the filing department and McPherson Hospital as a nurses aide. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, McPherson where she was Baptized and Confirmed. Marjorie Lousie Schafer was united in marriage to Joe Stillings on February 11, 1949 at the Navel Station Chapel, Key West, Florida. The young couple established their first home together in Key West, Florida. After Joe's honorable discharge from the Navy, They moved to McPherson, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of seven children, four sons and three daughters, Floyd, Sharon, Donald, Kenneth, Cheryl, Mary, and Gary. Through the years Marjorie was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. After the children were on their own she went back to work and worked for Bader Cleaners, worked in the Nazarene Church Nursery, and did some private childcare. Marjorie was a beloved mother, was the most patient, kind, loving mother ever. She always cared for others first and herself last. Where ever mom was, was home to her children, who will miss her loving eyes, smiles, and hugs full of love. Marjorie enjoyed children, animals, cooking, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family. Billy Joe attended McPherson grade schools, Sulphur Junior High and graduated from Sulphur High School, Sulphur, Oklahoma, in 1989. Through the years, Billy Joe worked for John's Manville, CertainTeed Mfg., Fed Ex, Old Dominion Trucking Company and KDOT all of McPherson. Billy Joe enjoyed being a handyman and could fix anything, he loved blues and country music, Billy Joe didn't know a stranger, he loved camping, fishing, cooking on his black stone grill and was a hard worker, he loved helping his friends and even strangers. His dog Snickers was his little buddy, most of all he loved spending time with his friends and family. William Joseph Moon was united in marriage to Sonya Allen on June 26, 1999 in Florida. This couple established their first home together in McPherson.. This union was blessed with two children Savannah and Avery. He married Shirley Mawhirter on May 6, 1962. She preceded him in death on May 19, 2017. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge in Great Bend. Survivors include sons, Allen, Kenny, and Clarence Aumiller; sister, Elaine (Gary) Fischer; brothers, Gary, and Karl Aumiller; 9 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends. Gilbert E. "Gib" Koehn, 92, of Hesston, Kansas, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Schowalter Villa.&nbsp; He was born July 15, 1929, in Montezuma, Kansas, the son of Edward B. and Josephine (Dutton) Koehn.

He was a conductor brakeman for the Sante Fe Railroad for 41 years.

Gib was a member of the Hesston Mennonite Church.

He was united in marriage to Irene Hostetler on September 15, 1950 in Hesston.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on November 15, 2013.

Survivors include his sons, Gary (Donna) Koehn of Hesston and Galen Koehn of Hesston; five grandchildren, Chris (Amber) Koehn of Hesston, Jennifer (Matthew) King of Wichita, Lauri (Travis) Lee of Topeka, Dustin Koehn of Newton, and Marie Koehn of Hesston; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine (Max) Grenard of La Junta, CO; and brother, Milton (Sue) Koehn of Montezuma.

Gib was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Koehn; parents; and seven siblings.

She married Howard Eshleman on December 27, 1943, and they lived in Missouri for 70 years. They lived in Texas for 9 years before moving to Newton. Howard died April 24, 2015.

Sharyn L. Thompson, 79, of Moundridge, KS and formerly of McPherson, KS and Overland Park, KS, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021, at Pine Village, Moundridge. She worked as an administrative assistant for Sprint in Overland Park, retiring in 2003.

Sharyn was born on December 26, 1941, in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of Melvin Alexander “Bud” and Betty Jean (Fenner) Bowers. She graduated from Neodesha High School and Clark Business School, Topeka. On June 29, 1963, she was united in marriage to Harvey Lloyd Thompson at the First Christian Church in Neodesha, KS. Two children were born to this union, Vickie and Steven.

She was a member of New Hope Evangelical Church, McPherson. She enjoyed doing all sorts of crafts, such as knitting and crocheting to benefit many nonprofit organizations. Along with knitting and crocheting prayer shawls and blankets for premature babies, she knitted Afghans for all her children and grandchildren. Sharyn loved dogs, and this trait has been passed down to many of her family members.

Survivors include: two children, Vickie van der Hoeven (Ian) of Canton, KS and Steven Thompson (Tammy) of Bishop, TX; five grandchildren, Matthew van der Hoeven (Kassidy), Ryan van der Hoeven (Lizzy), Alyssa Thompson (Vitaly), Caleb Green (Nicole), and Austin Thompson; six great-grandchildren, Henry, Gus, Aubrianne, Kinsley, Ethan, and Garrett; a brother-in-law, Pat Golay of Carthage, MO; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda Golay.

Marie’s life began on August 12, 1925, in Vona, CO.  She was the daughter of Henry and Dora Zubrod.  

She graduated from high school from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Stratton, CO.  Very early in life, Marie worked as a telephone switchboard operator before she was united in marriage to Daniel Navrat on September 22, 1947, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Stratton.  Marie was a faithful parishioner of the Holy Family Parish in Marion.  She volunteered teaching 2nd grade catechism at the church preparing children for first communion.  Marie led the weekly Rosary prayers for many years before Mass and enjoyed Altar Society.  She worked in the church kitchen preparing funeral dinners and always had a smile on her face.  Marie served her community as a member of the election board for several years and she was an avid quilter. Her greatest joy was her family which includes her children Donna (Robert) Cherry of Kingman, Ron (Deb) Navrat of McPherson, Daniel J. (Lisa) Navrat of Walton, Patricia Navrat of McPherson, and Machelle (Mike) Ratzloff of Marion; grandchildren Gary (Yolanda) Keen, Jessica Wells, Anjanette Montano, Melissa Chavez, Jason ( Celide) Navrat, Amber (Matt) Powers, Ashley ( Jonathan Graham) Ratzloff and Samantha ( Jordan Simmonds) Ratzloff; 14 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren.  

Marie passed away on Thursday July 22nd at St. Luke’s Living Center.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and two brothers.  Her family will gather with friends on Friday July 30th at 10 a.m. for visitation, 10:30 a.m. for Rosary and 11 a.m. for her Mass of Christian Burial all at Holy Family Parish, 415 N. Jacob James Reimer went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 24, 2021 at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kansas.

James was born on February 26, 1937 in Corn, Oklahoma to Cornelius J. and Helena (Friesen) Reimer.  He was the youngest of seven children.

James accepted Christ during his teenage years.  He attended the Corn M.B. Church. He attended Grenfield Elementary School and graduated from high school at Corn Bible Academy 1956.            

On August 23, 1957 in Hillsboro, Kansas at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, James and Dorothy Ann Reddig were united in marriage.

In 1959, James and Dorothy welcomed their first child, a daughter names Sheryl Lynn.  The following year a son, Brian Keith was born.  Sandra Lee was born in 1964 and completed their family.

James and Dorothy built a home in Hesston in 1970 where they lived for 50 years.  They worked for the Hesston School District, James in maintenance and Dorothy in food service.  They volunteered a year in 1983-1984 at Camp Arnes in Manitoba Canada.  He worked 33 years for the schools which his children and grandchildren attended. In 1999 James and Dorothy retired from USD 460.

He enjoyed his retirement years traveling, gardening and enjoying coffee with friends at the Hesston Senior Center.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius J. and Helena (Friesen) Reimer.  Siblings Ervin (Evangeline) Reimer, Elsie (Joe) Buller, Marie (Joe) Penner, Bertha (Arthur) Schmidt, Helen (Harry) Ratzloff, Minnie (Roy) Burton. A daughter Sandy Clayool and a grandson Cory James Reimer.

James is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, a daughter, Sheryl and her husband Rick Pohlenz, a son, Brian and his wife, Kristi (Jindra) Reimer, a son-in-law Stacy Claypool, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many more family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 30, 2021 at Hesston MB Church.  Burial will follow at the Hesston City Cemetery. Prenella Faye (Pommitt) Philbrick, 82, of Medicine Lodge, KS, died Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital.

She was born on March 3, 1939 in Garfield County, Oklahoma, the daughter of Alexander Dock Pommitt and Nina (Postier) Pommitt.

As a young woman, Prenella showed registered shorthorn cattle at state fairs in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. After her divorce, she became an over the road truck driver and also delivered new school buses from coast to coast. Prenella was very passionate about animals and wildlife. She was a lifetime Lutheran by faith and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Medicine Lodge, KS and Faith Baptist Church in Attica, KS.

Prenella was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, J.C. Pommitt.

Cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be in Covington Cemetery, Covington, OK.

Vivian was born on October 12, 1931, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Walfred Cornelius and Mabel Florence (Johnson) Briggs. She graduated from Inman High School in 1949. On February 11, 1951, Vivian was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Howard Milton Smith, at the Andover Lutheran Church, Windom. Two children were born to this union, Perry and Norene.

She was a lifelong member of Andover Lutheran Church, Windom and associate member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McPherson.

Survivors include: her loving husband of 70 years, Howard of the home; a son, Dr. Perry Smith (Krista) of Great Bend, KS; a daughter, Norene Kerschen (Daniel) of Garden Plain, KS; seven grandchildren, Emily Pauly (Ethan), Jon Kerschen (Emily), Rachel Schmidt (Jeffrey), Keith Kerschen, Kim Hay (Marshall), Kelsey Sciacca (Adam), and Mason Smith (Amy Urban); eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sister, Betty Mowbray (Duane); half-sister, Opal Racster; and half-brother, Hersal Briggs.
