Carolyn Marie (Bradbury) Nading, 88, of Moundridge, Kansas, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022 at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born April 17, 1934, in Welch, Oklahoma, the daughter of Hosea and Bessie (McCrery) Bradbury. Carolyn was united in marriage to John Leander Nading, Jr. on June 1, 1952 in Altamont. While John went to Korea, Carolyn became a graduate of Labette County Community High School with the class of 1953. Carolyn and John started their married life in Coffeyville, later moving to Wichita and then to Moundridge in 1972. Carolyn was the Moundridge City Clerk for twenty-five years, from 1972 to 1997. She was a member of the Moundridge United Methodist Church and was Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter in McPherson during the 1970’s and 1980’s. An avid fisherwoman, Carolyn earned the nickname of “Lucky”, as she always caught the most and biggest fish! Carolyn is survived by her husband, John of their home; her children, Karl Nading and his wife, Carol of Wichita; Audrey Diederich and her husband, Pat of McPherson, John Nading, III of Moundridge, Keryl Christian and her husband, John of Hutchinson, and Sharon Saylor and her husband, Lonnie of Hutchinson; brothers, Floyd (Valerie) Bradbury, Florida, Robert (Alice) Bradbury, Missouri, and Douglas (Marge) Bradbury, Louisianna; sisters, Judy (Gary) McGuinnes, Topeka, and Rosemary Sandy, Florida; grandchildren, Andrew Nading, Emma Lauer, Nic Winsky, Adam Winsky, Rusty Winsky, Gina Wedel, Rachelle Nading, Heather Jordan, Alexandria Danks, Angela Saylor, Rebecca Stoker, and Lucas Saylor; and 18 great-grandchildren. Anita Ingrid Neilson, 62, passed away on August 4th, 2022 at her home in Lindsborg, Kansas. 

Anita was born in Freemont, Nebraska to Astrida and Uldis Cepure on March 1st, 1960. As the second daughter of a pastor, Anita moved frequently with her family throughout her early years and attended many schools throughout the country. 

She attended Northwestern University for several years before following her mother to New York City to pursue a career as a pianist and model. Notably, in the 1980s, she studied privately with Dr. William Phemister and Dr. Lambert Dahlsten at Julliard School of Music, performed as a soloist for Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, appeared on the Joey Adam’s show, and performed at Café Versailles. 



In addition to her passion for music, Anita loved to travel. She visited Sweden and Jamaica, performing aboard cruise ships, and eventually ventured to Steamboat Springs, a small ski town in the mountains of Colorado, where she married Barry Alan Gross and had three children. Suffering from poor health, Anita moved to Lindsborg, to be closer to her mother. She worked as an accompanist at Smoky Valley High School and the Lindsborg Trinity United Methodist Church and additionally performed at the Swedish Crown and Vasa. 



Anita is survived by her son, Barry Gross; daughter, Sarah Bregman; and grandchildren, Kaya, Timothy, and Daphne. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Uldis Cepure and Astrida Neilson-Berrios; daughter, Brittany Gross; sister, Daina Rhoads; brother, David Cepure. 



A funeral service will be held for friends and family at Crick-Christians Funeral Home on Sunday, Septemeber 4th at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dallas Peterson of Lindsborg Trinity United Methodist Church. 

Inurnment and committal will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Lindsborg.

William Arthur Jones III ‘Trey’, passed away July 7, 2022, in Louisville, KY.&nbsp; He was born September 5, 1979, in McPherson, to William Arthur Jones, Jr. and Mary Alice (Hoss) Jones.

Trey was a 1998 graduate of Nickerson High School, Nickerson.&nbsp; He graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, KS, in 2003 with a bachelors degree in Business.&nbsp; Trey currently holds the high jump record at Nickerson High School and at Southwestern College where he was named a ‘Track and Field All-American’.&nbsp; He went to work at Anheuser Busch Strother Field, Winfield, and was the warehouse manager for ten years.&nbsp; Trey earned a Masters Degree of Education from Southwestern College and was employed for five years as a Social Studies teacher at Ark City Middle School, Arkansas City.&nbsp; After leaving Arkansas City, he became the shop instructor and the head track and field coach at Nickerson High School for the past six years.&nbsp; Trey was responsible for the design and the layout of the new track facility at Nickerson High School which was completed in 2022.

He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially ice fishing.&nbsp; Trey’s true passion involved woodworking and coaching track and field.&nbsp; He was always trying to give his students the opportunity and the avenue to be involved in the woodworking shop classes or to become a member of the track and field team.&nbsp; Trey was a friend to everyone.&nbsp; If anyone needed help, he could be counted on to be one of the first persons to show up to provide assistance and guidance to complete a task or project.&nbsp; He liked to travel, especially when it involved traveling to support his kids’ activities.&nbsp; Trey had many titles in his brief lifetime, but the ones he cherished the most were husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, teacher, and coach.&nbsp; He was an All-American athlete and an even better ‘all round good friend’.

On December 16, 2000, Trey married Amy E. Honeck, in Winfield. They shared over twenty-one years of marriage.

He is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Amy Jones of Nickerson; children, Hunter Jones, Ava Jones, and Creek Jones, all of the home; father, Bill Jones and Celeste Coonrod of Little River; mother, Mary Alice Hoss Jones of Sterling, KS; sister, Desiree (Brian) Newell of Ellsworth; grandparents, Bill and Phyllis Jones, Sr. of Hutchinson; and nieces, Madison, Brooklyn, and Reese Newell.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Dorothy Hoss.

Juliana “Julie” (Schmidt) Stucky, 87, died on September 2, 2022, at Paramount Community Living and Rehab in Newton.

She was born on June 1, 1935, in Goessel,, the firstborn daughter of John and Susie (Buller) Schmidt. Julie grew up with her eight siblings in rural Burns, where she attended and graduated from Burns High School with the class of 1954.

On June 18, 1954, Julie was united in marriage to Leland Stucky in Burns. They celebrated 68 beautiful years of marriage this year.

Julie was employed by Hehr International as a foreman for 43 years before she retired.

She was a devoted and faithful member of Meridian Baptist Church in Newton, where she volunteered in the church nursery for many years and was an AWANA leader for 30 years. She loved spending time with and getting to know all of the children.

Julie enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family.

Julie is survived by her husband, Leland Stucky; daughters, Barbara (Dan) Rexroat of Rosehill and Diane (Daryl) Walter of Newton; brothers, John Schmidt of Loveland, Colorado, Calvin Schmidt of Moundridge, and Dennis Schmidt of North Newton; sisters, Emmy Midkiff of Spokane, Washington, Fern Goodwin of Burns, and Berneda Jewell of Manhattan; and 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Deborah Louise (Stinchcomb) Schmidt, 69, died August 31, 2022, at her home in Newton.

She was born on December 20, 1952, in Ulysses, the daughter of Rhene and Mary Ann (Lauber) Stinchcomb. She grew up in Englewood, where she attended and graduated from Ashland High with the class of 1970. She would then take several classes at Dodge City Community College.

On December 6, 1991, Debbie was united in marriage to David Schmidt in Newton. The couple celebrated their 30th&nbsp;wedding anniversary last year.

For 25 years Debbie enjoyed working as a labtech at a clinic. When it was time for a career change she went on to work for High Street Company and Kitchen Corner for 16 years.

Debbie enjoyed gardening and liked to decorate for each season and occasion. She loved being a mother and grandmother, always making sure that her family was taken care of and that they knew how much she loved and cherished them.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Dave Schmidt; sons, Jason Schmidt, Matthew Vanover, and Rusty Vanover and wife, Ashley; sister, Pam Clark and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Amelia, Archer, Aletta and Lily; and many other family members and friends.

Jimmy Lee “Poppy” Flood, 84, formerly of McPherson, passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at his home in Splendora, TX.&nbsp; He was retired from the Kansas Dept. of Corrections and was the print shop supervisor at the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory in Hutchinson.&nbsp; He also worked for Kittell Printing in McPherson and owned and operated his own print shop in McPherson with son, Jimmy, Jr.

He was born August 9, 1938, in Cherryvale, to Bert and Robbie Irene (Allen) Flood.&nbsp; He spent most of his life in McPherson and graduated from McPherson High School in 1956.

On Jan. 18, 1958, he was united in marriage to Glova Ruth Linaweaver.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 2014.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children, Jimmy, Jr., Tammy, and Debbie.

Survivors include: his daughters, Tammy Ek of Splendora, TX, and Debbie Flood of Zwolle, LA; a sister, Donna Sue Janzen of McPherson; his grandchildren, Jennifer Flood of McPherson, Tanya Hansarik (Nick) of Spring, TX, Molly Williams (Clint) of Natchitoches, LA, Melissa Schamp (Shane) of Galva, Leah Grant of Hutchinson, Justin Ek (Stephanie) of Lexington, SC, Megan Carter (Brice) of Ankeny, IA, and Heath Ek of Hutchinson, and many great-grandchildren that he loved very much.

R. Jolene Cook, 80, passed away September 1, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born December 22, 1941, in Sterling, to Carl Thomas and Rosetta Emmegene (Hunt) Mitzner.

On July 7, 1961, Jolene married Weldon A. Cook, in South Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 60 years of marriage, prior to his passing on March 28, 2022.

Jolene owned the restaurant, AT&amp;O in South Hutchinson, for many years.&nbsp; In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, floral arranging, and could fix just about anything.&nbsp; Jolene had an amazingly creative and artistic mind.&nbsp; Some of her favorite things were black coffee, crossword puzzles, and vanilla ice cream.&nbsp; Jolene dedicated many years to researching her family history and was a former member of the Reno County Genealogical Society.

R. Jolene Cook, 80, passed away September 1, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born December 22, 1941, in Sterling, to Carl Thomas and Rosetta Emmegene (Hunt) Mitzner.On July 7, 1961, Jolene married Weldon A. Marlys Joan Bernard, 82, of Hutchinson, died on August 31, 2022, at Hospice House. She was born October 7, 1939, in Little River, to Glenn and Marjorie (Clarke) Stowe.

Marlys moved to Hutchinson in 1958 and graduated from Adela Hale Business College. Her first job was with the county attorney’s office in Hutchinson as a legal secretary. Marlys the worked for Dick Rome and Time Chambers in their private practices. She went back to work in the county / district attorney’s office in 1984, as its first full-time diversion coordinator. Marlys was a member of the Kansas Victims Assistance Association and the board of directors for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center of Hutchinson, serving as secretary, treasurer, and president. She retired as victim-witness coordinator for the Reno County district attorney’s office in 2007, after 23 years.

Marlys was a caring friend. She always sent cards for birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions. She was also famous for being the “Cookie Queen” of Reno County. Marlys baked cookies for everyone that she loved. Those cards and cookies will be missed.

In 1999, Marlys received an award from the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual &amp; Domestic Violence and the Sexual Assault &amp; Domestic Violence Center of Hutchinson as a “Mother of Our Movement”, in recognition of contributions made to lay groundwork for advocates, victims, and survivors. She received the Liberty Bell Award from the Reno County Bar Association in 2000, in recognition of her contribution to the legal profession in Reno County.

Marlys is survived by: her husband of 51 years, Jewell R. Bernard; daughters, Debra J. Gardner (Greg), Kristi L. Bernard; son, Jewell R. Bernard; sister-in-law, Freddean Stowe; son-in-law, Charles Weible; niece, Krista Smalley; grandchildren, Grant Gardener (Megan), Brittany Gardner, Sierra Gardner, Erika Sutton (Mike), Brandon Bernard (Meagan), Aimee Bernard, Arrin Bernard (Molly); and seven great-grandchildren.

Phyllis Lee Hendrickson, 77, of Hutchinson, died August 31, 2022, at her home. She was born February 5, 1945, in Hutchinson, to Joseph A. and Ola M. (Fletcher) Kunzie.

Phyllis graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1964. She was a homemaker whose whole life revolved around her family. Phyllis also had a big heart for animals. She was of the Baptist faith.

On August 15, 1964, Phyllis married Donald J. “Donnie” Hendrickson. He died December 19, 2008.

Linda’s life began on May 31, 1952, in Salina. She was the daughter of Lester Eugene Geissert and Bertie (Biles) Hood and stepfather Loren Hood. 

Linda was united in marriage to John Zeiner on September 18, 2004, at Herington Lake. Linda and John were the owners and operators of J and L Tire in Herington for many years. They were active supporters of Herington Hearts Core Community. 

Linda is survived by her children Colleen (Chris) Garr of Lost Springs, Derek (Tonya) Summers of Herington, and Jeff Summers of Herington; her brothers; Gene, Lanny, and Bruce Geissert; and her sister; Rose Bayes; her  grandchildren Linda, Christopher, Christina, and Johnathon Garr, and Austin Summers; great grandchildren Remington, Donald, Cherokee and Edward. 

Linda passed away at her home on Tuesday August 30, 2022, surrounded by her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John, granddaughter Angel Summers and two brothers Bud and Leo Geissert. The family will remember Linda privately with no public services.&nbsp;

David’s life began on May 19, 1974, in Newton. He was the son of Michael Wise and Lydia Swanson. David graduated from Newton High School in 1992 and went on to take some college courses in accounting.&nbsp; 

He married April Leete in 2005 in Newton, and worked as the Team Lead for Set Up at Master Brand in Newton,. He was an employee with Master Brand for twenty-three years.

In his free time, David loved all things Anime and Star Wars. He also enjoyed playing video games, especially Final Fantasy, but most of all he loved his family. His family includes his wife: April Wise; children: Ashley (Dustin) Fee, Steven Swatek, Summer Wise, Halie Wise, and Kevin Wise; grandchildren: Ruby Fee and Clarence Fee; parents: Michael Wise and Lydia Swanson; great grandmother: Dee Wise; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, and friends. David will be greatly missed by all.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth H. Cherryholmes. Millie worked at Hesston Hay &amp; Forage, working in the HR department for insurance, where she was an employee advocate. She retired in 2000 after 27 years. Millie was a 22 year volunteer for the Et Cetera Shop in Newton. She graduated from Wichita State University at the age of 77. Millie was a member of the League of Women Voters, Harvey County Democrats and the Red Hat Society. She was a Unitarian Universalist and was passionate in her acceptance of all people. She is survived by her children, Kendra (Jack "Martin") Hall, Bobbie (Kevin) Pawlowski, Leslie (Charlie) Wright, Kay Cherryholmes, Ken Cherryholmes, and Holly Cherryholmes; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, plus one great-great-grandson on the way; and many special nieces and nephews. Ruth Agnes Arpin, 84, died August 31, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born April 10, 1938, in Clifton, to Albert and Erma (Gepner) Odette.

Ruth graduated from Clyde High School.&nbsp; For over 50 years, she ran a daycare out of her home. Ruth was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

On August 9, 1958, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert Lee “Bob” Arpin, in Clifton.&nbsp; He died December 4, 2018, after they shared over 60 years of marriage.

Ruth is survived by:&nbsp; children, Kim McLain of Hutchinson, Scott Arpin (Beth) of Kechi, and Tony Arpin of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild (due to join the Arpin family in October).

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dorothy Hamel.

Rehabilitation Center, Newton.&nbsp; He was
born July 17, 1930, in Hurley, South Dakota, the son of Harvey J. and Barbara
A. Eckstein Odland.&nbsp; He was a graduate of
Hurley High School and received his Bachelor of Chemistry from Augustana
University, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;
He married Jean Carlson in South Dakota.&nbsp;
She passed away December 29, 2015.

Robert lived
in South Dakota, then moved to Scott’s City with Jean, before moving to
Hutchinson in 1984 for most of his life.&nbsp;
He was a chemist in agriculture.&nbsp;
He enjoyed making Victorian house models and model trains for the Union
Pacific.&nbsp; He became an honorary member of
the Union Pacific Historical Society.&nbsp;
Many of his home and train models can be found throughout the country.&nbsp; Robert enjoyed playing the piano and
singing.&nbsp; He was a member of the
Crossroads Christian Church, Hutchinson, where he coordinated the communion for
the shut ins.&nbsp; 

Survivors
include his daughters, Kathy (Mark) Wells, Brookfield, WI and Lori (Tim)
Burton, Park City; grandchildren, Krista (Sean) Koch, Jenna (Joe) Willis, Annie

Argie Inez Koons Staples, 69,
died September 18, 2019 at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. Argie’s
body was cremated in a ceremony shortly after her death in 2019 at Bigelow

Karen Joan Anderson, 74, of McPherson, formerly of Scottsdale, AZ and Lindsborg, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp; On April 30, 2021, she retired from Walters Optometry where she was the office manager.

Karen was born on February 14, 1948, in McPherson, the daughter of Leon and Ruth Josephine (Clark) Jantz.&nbsp; She graduated from Galva High School and was May Day Queen.

On December 17, 1971, Karen was united in marriage to Loren “Andy” L. Anderson in Miami, OK.&nbsp; They were married for 50 years before his passing on December 21, 2021.

Survivors include: three sons, Kevin Anderson (Lori) of McPherson, Keith Anderson of St. George, UT, and Tony Adams (Angie) of Hays; a brother, Gary Jantz (Debbie) of Newton; six grandchildren, Colton Anderson (Parker), Tyson Anderson (Nicole), Aaron Anderson (Rachel), Travis Anderson (Rhoni), Colton Adams, and Dakota Adams; five great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Merlyn Jantz, and sister, Myreta Koehn.

Elinor’s life began on November 15, 1931, in Herington, where she was born on the family farm. She was the daughter of Peter and Clara (Schaaf) Diepenbrock, and the youngest of four siblings. Elinor and her siblings were second generation Americans. 

Growing up, Elinor was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Herington, and a member of St. Paul’s Luther League chapter and performed in the church choir. &nbsp;Elinor was a 1949 graduate of Herington High School where she was the class Salutatorian. She went on to graduate with a clerical degree from Wichita Business College. After college, Elinor worked at First National Bank in Herington. During this period of her life, Elinor travelled extensively. She even took an extended trip to Alaska. 

Elinor married Lee Wayne Remy on February 09, 1958, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington. Together they owned and operated the Herington Livestock Auction and Sale Barn where Elinor was the bookkeeper. Additionally, Elinor served as bookkeeper for Town and Country Real Estate and cashier for Remy Auction.

In her free time, Elinor also was an avid gardener, tending her vegetables daily. Elinor was a long-time community leader of the Burdick Hustlers 4-H Club. Since her marriage to Lee, Elinor was an active member of Hebron Lutheran Church of rural Burdick.&nbsp; She also enjoyed watching college basketball and had a strong love for music. Most of all, Elinor loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

Jonas was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lyons.&nbsp; He graduated from Buhler High School in 2019.&nbsp; Jonas participated in Special Olympics since the age of nine and was on the Hutchinson Hawks team.&nbsp; He enjoyed bowling, volleyball, playing basketball, running track, and throwing the shot put.&nbsp; Jonas liked to play Farkle, Mexican Train Dominoes, playing on his PS4, going to movies, and eating nachos.&nbsp; He loved to attend sporting events and to watch his brother play basketball.

Jonas is survived by:&nbsp; his parents, Ronnie and Staci LeShore of Hutchinson; brother, Isaac LeShore; grandmother, Linda Williams; aunts, De (Mark) Hunt, Pat Hudson, and Carolyn Lucky; and numerous cousins.

Jonas Dale LeShore  |1999-2022|  

After a long life well lived, the incomparable Clinton John (CJ) Lett, Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 28, 2022, with his children and wife Audrey by his side - just one week shy of his 93rd&nbsp;birthday.&nbsp;

CJ was born in Rawlins, WY, on September 4, 1929, to Clinton John Lett Sr., and Minnie (Klein) Lett.&nbsp; He grew up and spent the majority of his life in Hutchinson.&nbsp; As a young boy, CJ along with his brothers Royce and Don, began working in their father’s business, Lett Service Inc, where they repaired appliances, radios and eventually installed commercial refrigeration units in every major grocery store in the area. By the age of 13, CJ was making repair calls on his own, which sparked his lifelong hobby of fixing or “improving” any electronic, appliance or machine he could get his hands on.&nbsp;

After high school, CJ attended Hutchinson Junior College and, in the summer of 1949, he purchased a 1939 Indian motorcycle, which would be the first of many motorcycles he would own over his lifetime. CJ went on to attend Kansas State University to study engineering before enlisting in the United States Air Force (USAF). He was deployed to Saudi Arabia for 14 months and while there he and some fellow airmen started up a band they named “The Sand Tunes”. CJ was the drummer and with the money he saved from local gigs and his USAF pay, he bought his second motorcycle, a 1951 Triumph, from a market vendor in Bahrain.

For his next tour, the USAF sent him to an AFB in Great Falls, MT.&nbsp; One day in Great Falls while reading the local paper, he came across a story about a free skate for all service members at the local ice skating arena. CJ was a decent skater and had brought his ice skates with him from Kansas, so he decided to check it out. After skating for a while, he stepped off the ice to rest when a young blond woman skated up to him and asked if he wanted to join the figure skating club.&nbsp; She introduced herself and let him know that she was the ice skating instructor at the Great Falls Ice Arena. His fate was sealed that night on the skating rink.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1953, CJ married the young blond ice skater, Audrey Rose Hodges, in Great Falls, MT, and he was also cast as a skater in a number of her ice shows. In 1954, they moved to Hutchinson, where over the years, they raised five children; Kimmie, Kris, Clinton John (CJ) III, Tommy, and Sam. CJ and his brothers worked for Lett Service Inc. for many years before taking over the business from their father, which was renamed Lett Electronics Inc., located at 410 N. Plum St. in Hutchinson. Although he retired from the business many years ago, CJ never stopped fixing things.

Throughout his life, CJ’s passion for riding motorcycles took him all over North America, Mexico, and international rides as well. In his early 80’s, while riding along the western coast of South Africa for a month, he bungee jumped off the tallest bridge in the country. CJ finally retired from riding at 84 after he broke his pelvis on a trip to Talladega with his motorcycle buddies. But he still had even more amazing stories, scars, and hospital bills to show from all of his many adventures.

Audrey and CJ loved to travel. They traveled internationally with friends and family several times a year and in their later years, they traveled around the US in an RV spending at least a month every year in Destin, FL.&nbsp;Audrey and CJ loved to go out dancing and if there was a band nearby you could usually find them on the dance floor.

The only thing CJ loved more than his family and friends, fixing things, traveling, and riding motorcycles was God. He was a lifelong devout Catholic who rarely missed daily mass or the opportunity to pray for those he loved and cared about. When he was 17, his priest, Father Downs, asked CJ to spend his senior year attending a Benedictine High School in Missouri to further his studies and his faith. This was a huge honor for CJ and one that helped him realize he was not being called to the priesthood. CJ went on to dedicate his faith to Catholicism and supported Catholic charities and missions in his community and around the world for the rest of his life.

Although we know CJ is now at peace, we will still wholeheartedly miss the funny things he would say during grace before family meals, his non politically correct jokes, what a great dancer he was, the joy he wore on his face during and after family gatherings, his constant teasing, the pride and love he showed for all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, the way he could hand out Catholic guilt like candy at Halloween, and the way he showed us how to live life fully and to not be afraid of death.

He was preceded in death by: his beloved son, Tommy Lett; mother and father, Minnie and Clinton John Lett Sr; brother, Royce Lett; and son-in-law, William Finke, II.

CJ will be missed greatly and remembered by: his wife Audrey; children, Kimmie Lett, Kris Finke, CJ (Kim) Lett III, and Sam (Lida) Lett; grandchildren, Samantha (Travis) Finke, Billy (Chelsea) Finke, Maggie (Ken) Finke, Kelsey Finke, Ethan (Star) Finke, Clint Lett IV, Madeleine Lett, Sam Lett, Dominik Lett, and Adela Lett; great-grandchildren, Lilian, Roselyn, William, Warren and Wylder; brother, Donald Lett;&nbsp;sisters, Charlene Hollingsworth, Karen Whitehall and Vicki Taylor.

By the age of 13, CJ was making repair calls on his own, which sparked his lifelong hobby of fixing or “improving” any electronic, appliance or machine he could get his hands on.&nbsp;After high school, CJ attended Hutchinson Junior College and, in the summer of 1949, he purchased a 1939 Indian motorcycle, which would be the first of many motorcycles he would own over his lifetime. CJ went on to attend Kansas State University to study engineering before enlisting in the United States Air Force (USAF). He was deployed to Saudi Arabia for 14 months and while there he and some fellow airmen started up a band they named “The Sand Tunes”. CJ was the drummer and with the money he saved from local gigs and his USAF pay, he bought his second motorcycle, a 1951 Triumph, from a market vendor in Bahrain.For his next tour, the USAF sent him to an AFB in Great Falls, MT.&nbsp; One day in Great Falls while reading the local paper, he came across a story about a free skate for all service members at the local ice skating arena. CJ was a decent skater and had brought his ice skates with him from Kansas, so he decided to check it out. After skating for a while, he stepped off the ice to rest when a young blond woman skated up to him and asked if he wanted to join the figure skating club.&nbsp; She introduced herself and let him know that she was the ice skating instructor at the Great Falls Ice Arena. His fate was sealed that night on the skating rink.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1953, CJ married the young blond ice skater, Audrey Rose Hodges, in Great Falls, MT, and he was also cast as a skater in a number of her ice shows. In 1954, they moved to Hutchinson, where over the years, they raised five children; Kimmie, Kris, Clinton John (CJ) III, Tommy, and Sam. CJ and his brothers worked for Lett Service Inc. for many years before taking over the business from their father, which was renamed Lett Electronics Inc., located at 410 N. Plum St. in Hutchinson. Although he retired from the business many years ago, CJ never stopped fixing things.Throughout his life, CJ’s passion for riding motorcycles took him all over North America, Mexico, and international rides as well. In his early 80’s, while riding along the western coast of South Africa for a month, he bungee jumped off the tallest bridge in the country. CJ finally retired from riding at 84 after he broke his pelvis on a trip to Talladega with his motorcycle buddies. But he still had even more amazing stories, scars, and hospital bills to show from all of his many adventures.Audrey and CJ loved to travel. They traveled internationally with friends and family several times a year and in their later years, they traveled around the US in an RV spending at least a month every year in Destin, FL.&nbsp;Audrey and CJ loved to go out dancing and if there was a band nearby you could usually find them on the dance floor.The only thing CJ loved more than his family and friends, fixing things, traveling, and riding motorcycles was God. He was a lifelong devout Catholic who rarely missed daily mass or the opportunity to pray for those he loved and cared about. When he was 17, his priest, Father Downs, asked CJ to spend his senior year attending a Benedictine High School in Missouri to further his studies and his faith. This was a huge honor for CJ and one that helped him realize he was not being called to the priesthood. CJ went on to dedicate his faith to Catholicism and supported Catholic charities and missions in his community and around the world for the rest of his life.Although we know CJ is now at peace, we will still wholeheartedly miss the funny things he would say during grace before family meals, his non politically correct jokes, what a great dancer he was, the joy he wore on his face during and after family gatherings, his constant teasing, the pride and love he showed for all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, the way he could hand out Catholic guilt like candy at Halloween, and the way he showed us how to live life fully and to not be afraid of death.He was preceded in death by: his beloved son, Tommy Lett; mother and father, Minnie and Clinton John Lett Sr; brother, Royce Lett; and son-in-law, William Finke, II.CJ will be missed greatly and remembered by: his wife Audrey; children, Kimmie Lett, Kris Finke, CJ (Kim) Lett III, and Sam (Lida) Lett; grandchildren, Samantha (Travis) Finke, Billy (Chelsea) Finke, Maggie (Ken) Finke, Kelsey Finke, Ethan (Star) Finke, Clint Lett IV, Madeleine Lett, Sam Lett, Dominik Lett, and Adela Lett; great-grandchildren, Lilian, Roselyn, William, Warren and Wylder; brother, Donald Lett;&nbsp;sisters, Charlene Hollingsworth, Karen Whitehall and Vicki Taylor.Please join us in celebrating CJ’s life this Saturday, September, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Rd., Hutchinson.&nbsp;A Parish Rosary will take place at 10:00 a.m. before the service. Charles Tom “Cactus” Hirst, 88, of Russell, died August 28, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society, Hutchinson. He was born July 28, 1934, in Hutchinson, to Bert and Juanita (Buckhannan) Hirst.

Tom graduated from Partridge High School in 1952. He worked in the telephone industry most of his life: 31 years as a technician for Western Electric, which later became Southwestern Bell, and 15 years as a sub-contractor. Tom loved to head to the woods for shooting rifles, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed using his ham and CB radios and watching NASCAR races. In 1972 Tom began attending AA and did so faithfully for nearly 50 years, allowing him to form many great friendships.

On October 22, 1969, he married Joan Ruth Davis. They shared 42 years before her passing on February 15, 2015.

Tom is survived by: sons, Theodore “Ted” Hirst, Hays, William “Bill” Hirst, Hutchinson; Ronald “Ron” Hirst (Tracy), Ark City; step-daughter, Marsha Harrington, Seattle, Washington; ten grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by: his parents, Bert and Nita Hirst; wife, Joan Hirst; and brothers, Bill, Eugene, and James Hirst.

Memorial service will be 10:30 am Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary. A private burial will take place in Partridge Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 am to 5 pm Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Sheryl Lynne (Allison) Smith, 71, of Buhler, Kansas, passed on August 28, 2022. Sheryl was born on June 26, 1951 in Lyons.&nbsp; She was first chair clarinet in the Pride of Lyons Marching Band and valedictorian of the graduating class of 1969.&nbsp; She followed her passions to Fort Hays State University where she marched with the Tiger Marching Band and majored in art education.&nbsp; Here she met a handsome economics major, Rick Smith.&nbsp; They met in art class when Rick claimed he needed help drawing some birds. 

Rick and Sheryl were married August 10, 1973.&nbsp; This union was blessed with three children: daughter Tara Goans and husband Lonnie of Buhler; daughter Mindy Fry and husband Andrew of Shawnee; and son Brett Smith and wife Julie of Buhler.

Sheryl began her teaching career at Eureka Jr. Sr. High School where she taught art for 7 years.&nbsp; The family moved in 1992 to Buhler, Kansas where Sheryl began teaching art for the elementary students at USD #313 and later moved to Buhler High School where she finished her teaching career in 2015.&nbsp; She was called to teach again for 2 more years at Prairie Hills and loved teaching middle school, even in retirement.&nbsp; Sheryl was also an adjunct professor at Sterling College, helping out with their art education program.

In addition to the many lives she touched through her teaching career, Sheryl continued to bless others with her music.&nbsp; She played the organ/piano for the Christian and Congregational Church (Eureka), First United Methodist Church (Hutchinson), and Emanuel Lutheran Church (Hutchinson). She also accompanied many students with state vocal competitions as well as assisting her children and grandchildren with music lessons.

Sheryl was loved tremendously by her family, her students and friends.&nbsp; She was always the first to help those in need. From donating supplies to classrooms, offering home cooked meals, or just being a listening ear, Sheryl was always quick to uplift her friends and family both in person and on Facebook, where she loved catching up with just about everyone.&nbsp; She enjoyed creating art and planned and hosted summer art camps for children with the Buhler Recreation Department.&nbsp; She loved her soap opera, The Young and the Restless, reading, and just having her entire family together.&nbsp; She also loved her medical shows while sharing her expertise with her family who called often needing medical advice!&nbsp; Most importantly, she loved the Lord and was faithful all her years on this earth.&nbsp; She was always proud that as a child she won a special perfect attendance pin each year in Sunday school.&nbsp;

Sheryl is survived by her husband Rick Smith of Buhler, daughter Tara Lynne Goans (Lonnie), daughter Mindy Lea Fry (Andrew), son Brett Ryan Smith (Julie), grandchildren Colton, Allison and Ty Goans, Mason Fry and Bellatrix Smith, brother Craig Allison (Nancy) of Salina, and sister Chelle Cox (Rick) of Kansas City, MO and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Bonnie (Crowl) Allison, and granddaughter Tayllor Paige Goans.&nbsp;

Sheryl Lynne (Allison) Smith  |1951-2022|  

Warren Leo Crist went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 27, 2022. Leo was born on March 24, 1927, on a farm in Osborn County. He was the second of four children born to Louis and Bernice Crist.

His freshman year of high school he had polio, so that kept him in bed for a whole year. However, that didn’t stop him. He graduated from Osborn High School in 1945.

After graduation, he started working for the Santa Fe Railroad. While working for the Santa Fe, he met a young lady named Margie Carpenter, who also worked for the Santa Fe. They began dating and were married on April 18, 1959. Both worked many years for the Santa Fe Railroad, with Leo retiring in 1989.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Lee Crist; his parents; and a sister, Marge Self.

He is survived by his daughter, Tina Schmidt and husband Larry; a grandson Brandon and wife Samantha; precious great-grandson, Victor; and sisters, Dorothy Markham and Twila Frank.

Some of Leo’s favorite things in life were hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved the great outdoors, and you could always find him working on a project.

In their retirement Marge and Leo traveled to every state at least twice.

He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 43 years. And volunteered at Crosswind Conference Center for many years.

There will be a graveside and home going service for him at Greenwood Cemetery at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 1, 2022, with Chip Bungard officiating.

Lorrayne G. Unruh Pankratz, 89, died on August 24, 2022, at Kidron Bethel in North Newton.

She was born on July 25, 1933 in Great Bend, the daughter of Harry and Lena (Schultz) Unruh.

Lorrayne attended Bethel College and Emporia State University for a degree in education. She taught at Albert, Scott City, Larned and Newton.

Lorrayne enjoyed reading, traveling, and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Along with Norman she enjoyed bird watching at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.

Lorrayne is survived by her husband, Norman L. Pankratz; daughter, Andrea Unruh and husband Merrill; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
