Cheryl “Sue” Johnson, 70, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away September 29, 2022, at her home. She was born February 1, 1952, in Concordia, the daughter of Carl and Betty Christensen Logan. 

Sue has resided in Lyons since 2017, formerly of Concordia. She graduated from Concordia High School and later received a Word Processing Degree from Concordia Community College. Sue was a homemaker. She was an avid bingo player; enjoyed going fishing; liked watching all sports, especially the Kansas City Chiefs, and loved her cat, Sam. Cheryl was united in marriage with Clarence Johnson. They later divorced. 

She is survived by her three sons, John Paul Storey of Wichita, Wesley T. Storey of Carson City, NV, and Bryce Dean Johnson and wife Kara of Lyons; three brothers, Steve Logan and wife Donna of Beloit, Kevin Fulton of Jamestown, and Kim Fulton of Concordia; sister, Rita Lewis of Douglas; grandchildren, Brooke Ashlee Storey, Blake Elliott Storey, Temple Link and wife Rachel and their four children, Levi Gillespie and wife Lindsey and their three children, and Jayme Gillespie; great-granddaughter, Daina Raine Lucas; and numerous nieces and nephews . Sue is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ike Logan; and two sisters, Kathy Fulton and Donna Rae Fulton. 

Private family services will take place at a later date. Burial will be at Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, Kansas.&nbsp;

Throughout her lifetime, Jackie was always reading books and had an unfathomable amount of knowledge. She loved living close to nature and always kept cats and kittens. She also enjoyed her pet rooster and goat. 

Jackie is preceded in death by her father, Jack Diven Eder; mother, Martha Cora Escarego; sister, Minnie Pearl Eder (Two Shoes); brother, Martin Dale Eder and her son, John Paul Haynes. She is survived by her sisters, Marlee Eder, Marie Knowles and Margaret Eder; two daughters, Deana Marie Bacon and Patricia Margaret Bacon Olive; six grandchildren, Evina Griffin, Dvon Griffin, Lericia Richards, Elizabeth Olive, Katelyn Olive and Michael Olive and nieces and nephews. 

Visitation will be Tuesday October 4th at 4pm - 8pm; Funeral service October 5th 2:320pm at Old Mission Mortuary.

Diane Jones, 63, passed away September 25, 2022, in Hutchinson, Kansas. She was born April 12, 1959, in Rome, Georgia, to Eli and Sybil Jones.

Harley Wagler, 81, died Sept. 30 at Hutchinson Hospital following a short bout with cancer. He was born Sept. 9, 1941, in Hutchinson to Raymond and Fannie (Mast) Wagler.

Harley grew up on a dairy farm in Partridge and showed an early love of animals and living creatures.&nbsp; But perhaps his strongest affections were kindled when he, acting on a tip from a local librarian, discovered the world of Slavic literature in the writings of Fyodor Dostoevsky.&nbsp; Harley sometimes remained in the haymow after chores to read yet another chapter of Dostoevsky.

Harley’s life combined scholarship with service to others.&nbsp; At age 20 he went to Costa Rica for a term of alternative service under Conservative Mennonite Conference.&nbsp; Harley later studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Pennsylvania, and he worked in Yugoslavia with Eastern Mennonite Missions.&nbsp; A golden chapter in his life was a stint in Bulgaria on a Fulbright Scholarship.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harley directed the Russian Studies Program in Nizhnii Novgorod, Russia, from 1993 until it closed in 2010. Harley then continued teaching at a Russian university until 2021, when he returned to his beloved roots in Partridge. He was a lifelong member of Plainview Mennonite Church.

Harley was a caring and gentle man who loved interacting with all those he met. He had a wide range of friends and connected easily with children. His fondness for animals led to many adventures, and he became a walking encyclopedia on animal, bird, and insect behavior. He was grounded in a strong faith and lived a simple, honest life. He was a generous man and considered his work rebuilding churches in Russia as one of his greatest accomplishments.&nbsp;

Survivors include: his siblings, Paul Wagler (Ellen), Wichita, Ruth Miller (Roman), Partridge, Philip Wagler, Hutchinson, Eldon Wagler (Jane), Lusaka, Zambia, and Duane Wagler, Colorado Springs; beloved goddaughter, Nastia Oleneva, godson, Aleksei James Black; and 13 nephews and nieces.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, Elizabeth Wagler, sister-in-law, Rose Ella Wagler and nephew Stanley Wagler.

Irene Martindell, 101, died September 29, 2022, at Wesley Towers, Hester Care. She was born May 24, 1921, in Hutchinson to Fredrick and Maude (Payne) Lanphier.

Irene was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. On August 10, 1947, she married Robert Martindell, in Hutchinson. He passed away May 31, 2008. Irene worked briefly as a legal secretary, but spent the majority of her life as a homemaker. She was a professional volunteer, giving her time to many organizations in Hutchinson over the years. For over 50 years Irene volunteered at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and served on the Hospital’s Auxiliary Board. She also served many years as volunteer choir director at First Congregational Church, was an active member of Chapter EK, &nbsp;P.E.O., helped with Hutchinson Community Concert ticket sales, and more.&nbsp;

Irene is survived by: daughters, Cynthia Wiens (Jerry), San Antonio, Texas, Sandra Lonnecker (Michael), Poway, California; sons, Steve Martindell (Daphne), Richardson, Texas, Stan Martindell (Marlene), Topeka; grandchildren, Kristen Green (Andrew), Taylor Martindell (Ben Currin), Paige Martindell (Scott Bulger), Blair Bertholf (Jordan), Sharon Hsia; and great-grandchildren, Branson and Emilie Green, Finnley Bertholf

Ruby “Chris” Christine (Kester) Fortune, 56,&nbsp;passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones.&nbsp;

Chris was born August 10, 1966 in Wichita, to John L. and Ruby (Kettner) Kester. She loved anything purple, her family, fishing, camping, her two Jack Russells, driving her brother’s Camaro, live rock and roll music and pretty much anything mischievous.

Chris is survived by her son, Phillip and daughters Sarah, Patricia, Jennifer and son in law DJ, 15 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter and 1 great grandchild on the way, her sisters Rachael, Amber, Genie, Melanie, Twila, Jessica and Johnna, brothers Marshal, Lester and Jonathan, many nieces and nephews and her best friend Jackie.&nbsp;&nbsp;She&nbsp;was preceded in death by her father John, her mother Ruby and her big brother David.&nbsp;

As a free spirit Chris didn’t let anything stand in her way. You rarely had to wonder what she was thinking because she let you know. This summer you could find Chris with her oxygen concentrator hooked up outside while she enjoyed time in her swimming pool. Her love for the outdoors included yard work and it was common for her children to come home to find their lawns mowed, things rearranged and a few new lawn ornaments. Chris was a kid at heart and truly enjoyed playing and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 3, at Westside Freewill Baptist Church, 3310 W. MacArthur, Wichita, with visitation before.&nbsp; Graveside will follow at the Hunt Cemetery, just north of intersection SE 30th Ave &amp; SE 100th St. (3 miles north of Rago).

Helen was a homemaker who truly loved cooking especially for her family.&nbsp; She also loved traveling with her husband.&nbsp; &nbsp;On January 20, 1951, she married Eugene “Beans” Smith in McPherson.&nbsp; They shared 70 years of marriage prior to his death on December 12, 2021. Helen attended New Life Nazarene Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene; son, Floyd Smith; great grandson Asher Smith and four siblings. Helen is survived by her daughters, Janice Davis of Fairbanks, AK and Terry (Mike) Luman of Nickerson; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. It is with profound sadness, that I announce the death of my dad, Billy J. Alumbaugh.&nbsp; He passed away peacefully on September 26, 2022, surrounded by his family in Larned.

My dad loved gardening, landscaping, and spending time with his family.&nbsp; Billy was especially fond of his grandchildren and was so excited to meet his new great-granddaughter, Claire, who is expected to be here soon.

Billy was born May 8, 1955, in Chula Vista, CA, and lived in Nickerson, Hutchinson, Turon, Lincoln, and most recently, Larned.&nbsp; He graduated from Nickerson High School in 1973 and worked as a laborer.&nbsp; He served in the United States Army from July 1973 to March 1976.

My dad could plant anything in the ground, and it would blossom into the most beautiful masterpiece.&nbsp; He tried in vain each year to teach me his craft, but finally succumbed to the realization that I just did not have the “magic touch” and allowed me to water his plants instead (but not too much and only during certain times of the day)!&nbsp; Billy loved mowing yards – any yard with any type of mower and at any time of the day.&nbsp; He knew exactly how to perfectly care for and maintain the most beautiful yards.&nbsp; Billy was also known for his beautiful food gardens that he planted every year.

Throughout his life, my dad was known for many things; making friends easily, helping anyone in need, loving his family, and being one of the most accident-prone people you had ever met.&nbsp; Billy’s stories of injury and near-death experiences always ended in a mixture of disbelief and belly laughs from his captivated audiences.

Billy is survived by the love of his life, Debra Alumbaugh – a woman who should be considered for sainthood solely by withstanding all the stitches, broken bones, surgeries, car wrecks, explosions, electrocutions, lightning strikes, snake bites, and other traumatic events she witnessed during their 46 years together.

Other survivors include:&nbsp; his daughter, Jessica (David) MacMahon; grandchildren, MacKenzie (Preston) Pittman, David (Brandy Trengove) MacMahon, and Sarah MacMahon.&nbsp; Anytime he spoke about us, it brought a smile to his face and he always said that he was so proud of all of us and the people we turned out to be.&nbsp;

It is with profound sadness, that I announce the death of my dad, Billy J. Gwendolyn Darlene Carter Roepka went home to Jesus on the 25th
of September 2022.&nbsp; She was a Nickerson
resident for over forty years and spent the last few months in memory care at
Legend of Hutchinson.&nbsp; 

Gwen was born at a
church in Sun City, on Jan. 14, 1928.&nbsp;
She spent her younger childhood years in Kansas and moved to the state
of Washington when she was around 13 years old.&nbsp;
She was a Daddy’s girl growing up and loved being with him as much as
possible.&nbsp;&nbsp; After a divorce in the mid
60’s, she moved back to Kansas and worked at Miro Flex Company in Wichita for
about ten years.&nbsp; She met the love of her
life, Bill Roepka at a dance event at the Cotillion Ballroom in Wichita in 1975
and they were married April 9th, 1976.&nbsp; Over their 40 plus years of marriage they
were inseparable.&nbsp; Together they built
their forever home in Nickerson with Gwen cleaning up after every saw cut. Even
though she was far away from them, Gwen’s family never worried about her after she
met Sweet ole Bill due to his constant care, love and respect for her. She had
a crazy sense of humor, loved to dance and was proudly known as a spotless
housekeeper. While working in the high school lunch room and at Lil Nick, she
might have had some favorite kids that got the special Gwen treatment.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and
one sister and her beloved son Rufus.&nbsp;

Bonnie Lou Neville, 82, passed away at her home in Chandler, AZ, on July 15, 2022, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 19, 1940, in Grand Junction, CO, the first of two children born to Dorothy Pauline (Williams) and James Thomas Coons.&nbsp; Bonnie was the last surviving member of this family.

Bonnie was the rock, beacon, and compass for her family.&nbsp; She organized and hosted every family gathering, including most Christmases for over 60 years. &nbsp;While her family mourns the passing of their matriarch, her many friends and hundreds of former students mourn the loss of a beautiful and vivacious woman who was always willing to lend a listening ear, offer advice, consolation, or a pep talk; serving as a trusted friend, mentor, confidant, and motherly figure over the decades to most that she knew.&nbsp;

Bonnie and her little brother Tommy were raised in Goodland, KS in the 1940’s and 1950’s in a community that personified a thriving, safe, small American rural town.&nbsp; Her childhood was filled with happy times, a loving home, and constant family gatherings which included some of the older generations of the Coons and Williams families; some of whom were original Kansas pioneers.&nbsp; Bonnie listened and learned oral stories and songs from her family and surely entertained the grownups with her precocious song and dance. &nbsp;She took her first dance lesson at the age of 5, launching her into a talent and vocation she pursued over the next 70 years.&nbsp; Bonnie graduated from Sherman County Community High School in 1958.&nbsp; She was popular with her friends, twirled the baton for the marching band, sang and danced in many community and school productions, lettered in Vocal Music, and her dance card was full at every sock hop.&nbsp; She attended Kansas State University for a year and half of college, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi, served as an attendant in the Homecoming Court, was Queen of the Blackfoot-Whitefoot Ball, and performed in several college productions.&nbsp; Bonnie maintained her many close high school and college friendships until her dying days.&nbsp;

In 1959, Bonnie participated in and won the Miss Northwest Kansas beauty pageant. She went on that same year to compete in the Miss Kansas pageant, where she performed a song and dance of “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” for her talent with a dress and parasol made by her mother.&nbsp; After Bonnie’s time in college, she lived and worked with a friend in Denver, and learned how to ski on the weekends.

On July 23, 1961, she married the love of her life, Lyle Neville, in Goodland, KS. They were married for 59 years before Lyle passed away in 2020.&nbsp; Bonnie and Lyle started their married life and family together in Colby, KS, where Bonnie’s first job was working at the school district offices as secretary to the superintendent.&nbsp; In 1965, she started her college teaching career with dance instruction at Colby Community College.&nbsp; While at Colby CC, Bonnie, who was only a few years older than her students, began taking small groups of them for weekend ski trips to Colorado, and this activity was soon converted into a formal Ski Club.&nbsp; &nbsp;In their home in Colby, Bonnie began instructing young girls in afternoon dance classes.&nbsp; This was always a second career she had, as a dance teacher and entrepreneur to contribute to the financial needs of her growing family.&nbsp; Bonnie’s in-home dance lessons would continue for another 50 years, and her income from that provided the clothing, shoes, gifts, vacations, extra spending money and college educations for her four children.

In 1971, Bonnie and Lyle moved their young family to Hutchinson, KS, where Bonnie continued her teaching career at Hutchinson Community College, in the Physical Education Department.&nbsp; &nbsp;In addition to instructing her college course dance classes in tap, modern, folk, ballroom, aerobics, swing, country, and even disco; she was also hired as the Choreographer Instructor, and eventual Director of HCC’s Dragon Dolls, a performance drill dance team.&nbsp; “Under the direction of Bonnie Neville…”, as the public address announcer stated hundreds of times, this ever-revolving group of young college aged women provided the halftime entertainment for the Blue Dragons’ home football and basketball games and the annual NJCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.&nbsp; For over 40 years, Bonnie maintained an office in the Sports Arena.&nbsp; Juggling her practice times in the lower practice court and the Arena’s main court with sports teams and bands, she befriended athletic and band directors, coaches, athletes and players, janitors and concessioners, and the walking public over all those years.&nbsp; The Dragon Dolls were more than just a dance team; Bonnie mentored and counseled these young women, many of them away from home for the first time, with no other female role model at college other than Bonnie.&nbsp; Every year they worked various jobs at the Kansas State Fair including as “Trolly Dolly’s” and selling t-shirt and music concessions and seat backs in the Grandstand for all the great musical acts over the decades.&nbsp; With this earned extra money, the team was able to charter a bus and make an annual trip to provide a halftime performance at the United States Air Force Academy.&nbsp; Bonnie concocted, organized, and executed all of this; and in doing so, gave many young Kansas girls the first opportunity for an interstate trip and performance and each year the trip culminated with many of them on the first and only ski trip of their lives.

Bonnie’s School of Dance was held for four decades in the basement of the Neville home on Pawnee Drive.&nbsp; This was Bonnie’s labor of love, working with girls as young as 3 years old and as old as 18 in a class setting for their first extracurricular activity and lessons.&nbsp; This experience culminated each year in the annual Dance Recital, which packed the Hutchinson High School Auditorium with a dance performance by the students and put on by helpful parents and Bonnie’s family members.&nbsp; Bonnie would work with any young person interested in dance, regardless of their challenges or talent.&nbsp; Her only requirement was that they were potty trained when they started.&nbsp; Several of Bonnie’s young students went on to have children of their own who were then also taught dance by Bonnie.

Bonnie was an engaged member of her community in Hutchinson; she participated in P.E.O., and choregraphed and danced in the Hutchinson Follies and other shows to raise money for several philanthropic organizations and helped produce and performed in the show to celebrate the Centennial of Hutchinson in 1972. &nbsp;

In the spring of 2014, Bonnie retired from her employment with the college and the Dragon Dolls after 44 years, ending her college dance instruction career as one of the longest tenured instructors at HCC.

In the fall of 2014, Bonnie and Lyle said a hard goodbye to their neighbors and friends of so many years, and relocated to Chandler, AZ to be close to several of their children and grandchildren; and so, enjoyed their final years in their new home; continuing to host family gatherings and visits by relatives and friends.&nbsp; Bonnie was the tireless family cook for her entire life.&nbsp; Between the home dance lessons, she would tend the stove or oven to provide the prepared nightly meal for the family.&nbsp; She would provide a large spread for family gatherings, and even when it was just her and Lyle at the end, she could not help cooking well balanced, complete meals portioned for four to six people.

Bonnie was a creative, artistic, and industrious soul. &nbsp;She pursued artistic creation and joyful expression in several mediums including painting, creative crafts, stained glass, beaded jewelry and home and holiday decorating. &nbsp;She enjoyed and appreciated the arts, dance, music, movies, and Broadway theater.&nbsp; &nbsp;She appreciated native American culture, art, and jewelry. She enjoyed flower gardening her entire life, maintained a lily and fishpond with her husband, and always fed the birds and squirrels. &nbsp;As the intense demands of raising her family subsided, she developed interests in wine and traveling.&nbsp; In addition to multiple trips to exotic and tropical destinations, her and Lyle spent up to 2 weeks each year at their timeshare on the beach on Sanibel Island, FL, where she could be found wandering up and down area beaches in search of beautiful, interesting, and rare shells, and stopping for joyful conversations with strangers.&nbsp; Bonnie had a love of nature and outdoor activity, she loved ski trips, mushroom hunting in the mountains and visiting any ocean beach she could get to.&nbsp; Bonnie and Lyle spent much of their later years vacationing, attending or watching Kansas State Football games, and enjoying time with family, relatives, and especially her loving brother Tom.

Bonnie maintained true and meaningful lifelong relationships with so many people; childhood, high school and college classmates, neighbors and friends from Goodland, Colby, Hutchinson and Chandler, the friends of each of her own children, her young dance students, and her young Dragon Doll ladies. &nbsp;Through her entire life she had deep and caring relationships with her aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and sisters and brothers-in-law.&nbsp; She was in contact with so many friends and relatives that her sudden loss has left a hole in many peoples’ lives.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Bonnie’s greatest of all accomplishments was her family, whom she and Lyle nurtured, provided for, educated, and supported in every way. &nbsp;Her greatest joy in life was her role of grandmother, and through pure love, care, and attention she cultivated a unique, intense, and personal relationship with each of her grandchildren who knew her as either ‘Grandma’ or ‘Mimi’. &nbsp;Her greatest sense of duty in life was as a mother.&nbsp; Herself wonderfully loved and mentored by her own mother and grandmothers, Bonnie nurtured and loved her four children unconditionally.&nbsp; She provided the example of herself in how to live, work and enjoy life and to treat and communicate with those around you with interest, respect, inclusion, and love.&nbsp; She was immensely proud of each of her children, their interests, accomplishments, and character.&nbsp; And for each, she was their most fierce defender when they needed it most.&nbsp; Bonnie is missed and loved by all who had a chance to know her.&nbsp;

Bonnie is survived by: her three sons, Brad (Dena) of Hutchinson, Lane (Kristin) of Scottsdale, AZ, Morgan (Sandra) of Chandler, AZ; daughter, Monée of Ahwatukee, AZ; nine grandchildren, Cole, Anna, Dalton, Elle, Ayla, Mia, Skye, Eden, and Isaac; sisters-in-law, Kathy Coons of Gilbert, AZ, and Carol Coons of Hutchinson; eight nephews; and nine nieces.

She was preceded in death by: her parents Jim and Dorothy; husband Lyle; and brother, Tom.

She enjoyed flower gardening her entire life, maintained a lily and fishpond with her husband, and always fed the birds and squirrels. &nbsp;As the intense demands of raising her family subsided, she developed interests in wine and traveling.&nbsp; In addition to multiple trips to exotic and tropical destinations, her and Lyle spent up to 2 weeks each year at their timeshare on the beach on Sanibel Island, FL, where she could be found wandering up and down area beaches in search of beautiful, interesting, and rare shells, and stopping for joyful conversations with strangers.&nbsp; Bonnie had a love of nature and outdoor activity, she loved ski trips, mushroom hunting in the mountains and visiting any ocean beach she could get to.&nbsp; Bonnie and Lyle spent much of their later years vacationing, attending or watching Kansas State Football games, and enjoying time with family, relatives, and especially her loving brother Tom.Bonnie maintained true and meaningful lifelong relationships with so many people; childhood, high school and college classmates, neighbors and friends from Goodland, Colby, Hutchinson and Chandler, the friends of each of her own children, her young dance students, and her young Dragon Doll ladies. &nbsp;Through her entire life she had deep and caring relationships with her aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and sisters and brothers-in-law.&nbsp; She was in contact with so many friends and relatives that her sudden loss has left a hole in many peoples’ lives.&nbsp; &nbsp;Bonnie’s greatest of all accomplishments was her family, whom she and Lyle nurtured, provided for, educated, and supported in every way. &nbsp;Her greatest joy in life was her role of grandmother, and through pure love, care, and attention she cultivated a unique, intense, and personal relationship with each of her grandchildren who knew her as either ‘Grandma’ or ‘Mimi’. &nbsp;Her greatest sense of duty in life was as a mother.&nbsp; Herself wonderfully loved and mentored by her own mother and grandmothers, Bonnie nurtured and loved her four children unconditionally.&nbsp; She provided the example of herself in how to live, work and enjoy life and to treat and communicate with those around you with interest, respect, inclusion, and love.&nbsp; She was immensely proud of each of her children, their interests, accomplishments, and character.&nbsp; And for each, she was their most fierce defender when they needed it most.&nbsp; Bonnie is missed and loved by all who had a chance to know her.&nbsp;Bonnie is survived by: her three sons, Brad (Dena) of Hutchinson, Lane (Kristin) of Scottsdale, AZ, Morgan (Sandra) of Chandler, AZ; daughter, Monée of Ahwatukee, AZ; nine grandchildren, Cole, Anna, Dalton, Elle, Ayla, Mia, Skye, Eden, and Isaac; sisters-in-law, Kathy Coons of Gilbert, AZ, and Carol Coons of Hutchinson; eight nephews; and nine nieces.She was preceded in death by: her parents Jim and Dorothy; husband Lyle; and brother, Tom.Click&nbsp;<a href="https://www.koonsrussellfuneralhome.com/obituary/Bonnie-Neville">HERE</a>&nbsp;for service details.

James Raymond “Jim” Schinstock, 80, died peacefully at his home on September 28, 2022, surrounded by his family.&nbsp; He was born February 7, 1942, in Dodge City, to Albert and Ola Mae (Gerkin) Schinstock.

Jim graduated from Kinsley High School in 1960, St. Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City, KS, in 1965, and Fort Hays State University in 1969, with his Master’s Degree. He taught Philosophy, Human Relations, American History and English for 44 years at Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; For 12 years after he retired, Jim was a Community Columnist for&nbsp;The Hutchinson News, writing a variety of articles that readers looked forward to on a regular basis; his last article was published September 11, 2022.&nbsp; In addition, Jim enjoyed traveling, reading, and playing cards.&nbsp; He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Hutchinson, where he sang in the Chancel Choir for over 50 years, was a Eucharistic Minister, and was involved in the Cursillo Community.

Jim reveled in the achievements of his children and grandchildren, and he loved observing the successes of his thousands of students.&nbsp; He was known for his smile and his quick wit, but was perhaps most well-known for his love of the people close to him.

On September 2, 1967, he married Carolyn Sue Wargo, in Fort Riley.&nbsp;

Jim is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Schinstock of Hutchinson; son Bradley Schinstock and wife Joanne - their children Victoria, Gemma, Gabriel, and Maximilian of Hyattsville, MD; daughter Kristin Plants and her son Austin of Hutchinson, KS; Ryan Schinstock and his wife Bridget - their children Abigail, Emma, Riley, and Makenzi of Grain Valley, MO; and daughter Julia Schinstock of Topeka, KS; brother, Gene Schinstock and wife Jeanne of Lincoln, NE; sister Marilyn McClendon of Larned, KS; and sister Marjorie Dowell and husband Rich of Cody, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jerome Schinstock and Gerald Schinstock.

Laura Patsy “Pat” Palmer 79, died September 27, 2022 at NMC Health Newton.&nbsp; She was born November 23, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Edgar and Laura (Hamilton) Harlow.

Pat loved music and dancing and country music was a special favorite. She also could be found spending time crocheting and sewing. One of her favorite pastimes was decorating for various holiday’s. She was known for being an outgoing social person who was always on the go. One of her greatest joys in life was being a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many.

Samuel F. Crissman, Jr., age 83, passed away on Sept. 26, 2022 at St. John, KS.&nbsp; He was born on July 13, 1939 on a farm in rural Stafford County, the son of Samuel F. and Melba L. (Harman) Crissman, Jr.&nbsp; 

He was a farmer, former owner of Valley Irrigation and a drag racer, living and farming near St. John his entire life.&nbsp; He graduated from St. John High School in 1957 and attended some college at Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University. He was a member of the Eden Valley Church of the Brethren, Masonic Lodge, board member of St. John Farmers CO-OP, board member of Big Bend Groundwater Management District #5, FSA County committee member and Sunflower Rod and Custom Assoc.&nbsp;

 On Sept. 24, 1961 he married Sharon K. Estes at Macksville, KS., she survives of the home.&nbsp; Other survivors include two sons, Kirby W. (Leah) Crissman, St. John; Kenton E. (Rhonda) Crissman, Troutman, NC; one daughter, Kristene K. (Brian) Brown, St. John; a daughter-in-law, Marcia Crissman, St. John; a brother, Rodney R. (Pat) Crissman, St. John; two sisters, Melita G. Aletha Marie Kingdon, 89, of Little River, Kansas, passed away September 27, 2022, at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home, Little River. She was born August 15, 1933, in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of Louis P. and Olga M. Larsen Kebschull. 

Aletha has resided in Little River since 2006, formerly of Maize, Kansas. She graduated from Eldora High School, Eldora, Iowa. Aletha was a homemaker and computer programmer for Defenders of the Christian Faith, Wichita. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Little River, Eastern Star, White Shrine, Order of the Amaranth, and The Social Order of the Beauceant. Aletha enjoyed china painting, ceramics, folk painting and sewing. 

On September 18, 1955, Aletha was united in marriage with Roderick G. Kingdon in Eldora, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1995. She is also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert G. Kebschull; and great-grandson, Evan Kingdon. 

Aletha is survived by her two children, Carl Kingdon Sr. and wife Linda of Baxter, TN, and Kay Howie and husband Fred of Little River, KS; four grandchildren, Rebecca Kingdon, Carl Kingdon Jr. and wife Christina, Adrian Howie and wife Kristen, and Nicole McQueen and husband Mike; and ten great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, October 1, 2022, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Wichita, with Pastor Anna Borders officiating.

Anna Grace (Wiens) Flickinger, 100, died peacefully September 28, 2022, in Inman. Anna Grace was born September 11, 1922, to Martin and Nettie (Vogt) Wiens in rural Inman. She married Virgil Flickinger on August 10, 1949, and they shared 37 years of marriage before his death in 1986. Education and service were important to Anna Grace. She taught first grade in various schools in Kansas before she and Virgil spent two years volunteering with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) doing relief work in Europe from 1950-1952. They spent a year in Naples, Italy, and another year in Germany, briefly in Berlin, but mainly in Kaiserslautern. Together they raised their family in Inman, where Anna Grace was active in church and community activities and organizations, as well as driving a Kindergarten bus route for Inman Grade School, and working at Pleasant View Home as a CMA. She enjoyed reading, quiltmaking, music, travel, and genealogy “in that order”. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; parents, Martin D. and Nettie (Vogt) Wiens; sisters, Hilda (Wiens) Wiens and Kathrien (Wiens) Wedel; and brother, Ervin J. Wiens. Surviving are her children, Carol Flickinger (Roger Juhnke) of Newton, Jim Flickinger of Newton, Jean (Russ) Gaeddert of Hutchinson, and Nancy (Jeff) Friesen of Inman; grandchildren, Adam Gaeddert (Rebecca Woodruff), Sam (Keila) Gaeddert, Jake (Rebecca) Friesen, and Jared Friesen; and great-grandchildren, Clara and Eleanor Gaeddert, Jackson and Wesley Gaeddert. Anna Grace (Wiens) Flickinger  |1922-2022|  

Virgie Anne Koehn, 80, of Moundridge, formerly of Halstead, and West Point Mississippi, passed away Monday, September 26, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. 

Virgie and her husband Merle have lived at the Moundridge Manor since July of this year. She was born January 13, 1942 in Halstead, the daughter of Fred J. and Anna (Ratzlaff) Nightengale.

Virgie attended Halstead High School and later graduated from Scott City High School. She was a nurse aid at Halstead Hospital and a homemaker. Virgie was united in marriage to Merle E. Koehn on October 21, 1962 at Halstead. He survives.

Virgie and Merle attended Halstead Grace Mennonite Church when they were younger and they are current members of West Point Mennonite Church in West Point, Mississippi.

Other survivors include her daughters, Juli Buller of Galva, and Kristen Campbell of West Point, MS; son, Brian Koehn and his wife Kay of Prairie, MS.; grandchildren, Jesse, Brianna, Kip, Ivan, Lexie, Gretchen, Samantha, Anna, and Zack; and six great-grandchildren. Virgie was preceded in death by her parents; ten sisters; two brothers; grandson, Andrew Campbell; and son-in-law, Tim Campbell.

Virgie Anne Koehn, 80, of Moundridge, formerly of Halstead, and West Point Mississippi, passed away Monday, September 26, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Virgie and her husband Merle have lived at the Moundridge Manor since July of this year. She was born January 13, 1942 in Halstead, the daughter of Fred J. and Anna (Ratzlaff) Nightengale. Virgie attended Halstead High School and later graduated from Scott City High School. She was a nurse aid at Halstead Hospital and a homemaker. Virgie was united in marriage to Merle E. Koehn on October 21, 1962 at Halstead. He survives. Virgie and Merle attended Halstead Grace Mennonite Church when they were younger and they are current members of West Point Mennonite Church in West Point, Mississippi. Other survivors include her daughters, Juli Buller of Galva, and Kristen Campbell of West Point, MS; son, Brian Koehn and his wife Kay of Prairie, MS.; grandchildren, Jesse, Brianna, Kip, Ivan, Lexie, Gretchen, Samantha, Anna, and Zack; and six great-grandchildren. Virgie was preceded in death by her parents; ten sisters; two brothers; grandson, Andrew Campbell; and son-in-law, Tim Campbell. Florence Eleanor Hamm was born November 9th, 1927, to Edward and Bertha (Hill) Hamm.&nbsp; She was saved and baptized at the age of 10 at the Durham Baptist Church.&nbsp; She attended school at Warren School, near Durham, and Hillsboro High School. &nbsp; Florence married Ira Riffel on May 6, 1945, at Durham Baptist Church.&nbsp; Florence and Ira lived on the home place of Isaac and Julia Riffel, and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church after getting married. &nbsp; Florence assisted Ira on the farm and loved driving tractors and hauling the harvest to the elevator.&nbsp; She also drove the school bus for Navarre and Chapman schools for 37 years. She taught scripture memory and Sunday School classes for many years as well.&nbsp; She enjoyed baking for the family, and her fried chicken, coconut cream pie, cinnamon and cherry rolls will forever be a delicious memory!&nbsp;

Together, Ira and Florence raised three children: Norma, Mary, and Rick. They were married for 45 years until his death in February 1990.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 1995, Florence married Wilbur Hett and moved to Hillsboro at that time.&nbsp; Wilbur passed away in 2014, and Florence then moved to Parkside Apartments in Hillsboro. She remained there until her death and was visited often by family and friends.

Florence was preceded in death by her spouses Ira Riffel and Wilbur Hett, her parents, Edward and Bertha Hamm, and her siblings: Art, Eddie, Elsie (Lawrence), Elma (Klein), Dorothy (Foth), Ted, Delbert, and Duane.&nbsp;

Florence is survived by her three children: Norma Pschigoda (Von), Mary Riffel (Rod), and Rick Riffel (Kim); one brother, Marvin Hamm (Joyce); sisters-in-law Shirley Hamm and Carolyn Hamm; and best friend, LaNorma Kreutziger. She is also survived by eight grandchildren:&nbsp; Robin Webb (Mike), Stacey Tischhauser (Chad), Brennan Riffel (Becky), Megan Soeken (Brice), Mandy Kunkel (Kyle), Matt Riffel, Isaac Riffel (Ashleah), and Alexa Beebe (Brandon), and 23 great-grandchildren:&nbsp; Michaela and Caden Webb; Maddy, Branton, and Peyton Tischhauser; Chelsey Nichols (Ricky), Brett, Abby, and Gabe Riffel; Aubrie, Wesley, Kyra, and Riley Fuchs; Ella and Evie Soeken; Carson, Irie, and Georgia Kunkel; Raef, Reeslyn, and Raelyn Riffel; and Noah and Anna Beebe.&nbsp;

Florence Eleanor Riffel Hett  |1927-2022|  

Beryl Ann Stretch was born on August 6, 1935, in Blandford Forum, England, to Harold and Gwendolyn (Wright). Waiting for her at home were Myra, Edna, and Raymond.

Eventually, they moved to Shaftesbury, where she met and married American airman Eugene Steiner on April 20, 1955, at the St Edward, King and Martyr, Catholic Church. They lived in Shaftesbury until the following February, arriving in Durham on Valentine’s Day 1956, leaving behind the English village and joining the bustling Steiner family farm in Durham, Kansas.

Though they grew up thousands of miles apart, Beryl, who grew up during WWII post-war rationing, was well-suited with Gene, who was raised during the Great Depression. When asked later in life, she said she would always remember the horrible smell of the gas masks issued and nearly being evacuated to Australia.

As a child, Beryl discovered a lifelong love of swimming in the English Channel. Both her father and grandfather were bakers, skills passed down that she was famous for within the family; that flair for baking has made its way into her descendants, even as far down as her great-grandchildren. Beryl was also a nursing cadet in The St. John Ambulance Brigade, dedicated to the teaching and practice of first aid and the support of the national emergency response system in England.

In 1957, Roy was born, Perry two years later, Paula in 1965 and Rex in 1966.

In October 1969, with four children under twelve, she became a naturalized American citizen. However, she remained the proper English lady her mother raised and observed teatime daily.

Throughout the course of her life, Beryl received recognition for her needlework and gardening skills; was an avid knitter, including a potholder and Afghan for every grandchild; worked Boots pharmacy in Shaftsbury and the kitchen at Salem Hospital.

Later in life, Beryl enjoyed supporting the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, as well as finding treasures donated by others while working at the Et Cetera shop in Hillsboro.

Beryl was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sister Edna, and grandson Ryan. In 2011, after 56 years of marriage, Gene died after a battle with cancer.

She is survived by Roy; Perry &amp; Barb, Amanda (children Tucker &amp; Everett), Eric, Victoria (children Annabelle &amp; Stella); and Paula &amp; Stephen Kieffer, Alyssa, Mariah, Mikayla, Aiden; and Rex, nieces, nephews and cousins on both sides of the pond, and countless friends loved as though they too were family.

Kermit Ratzlaff, Hillsboro, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2022, at Parkside Home in Hillsboro at the age of 100.

Kermit was born December 26, 1921, in the Hillsboro Hospital to Jonathan J and Marie Plenert Ratzlaff. In 1928, they moved to the Balko area in the panhandle of Oklahoma, in time for the hardships of the dust bowl. The family was part of the Balko Mennonite Brethren Church, and he was baptized at the age of 12. Kermit was valedictorian at Corn Bible Academy and at Bethany school at Balko.

He enrolled in Tabor College, and here he met Ruth Warkentin. In the fall of 1942, they were engaged, days before he was inducted into Civilian Public Service as a Conscientious Objector, serving in Oregon, Wisconsin, and California. Kermit and Ruth were married in Los Angeles August 11, 1944, and lived in Pasadena, California, for 14 years where they produced 5 children. They spent 4 years in west Los Angeles, and he received his Ph.D. in Zoology from UCLA in 1961.

In 1962, the family moved to Edwardsville, Illinois, where he joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He remained at SIUE until retirement in 1992.

Within a couple years, he and Ruth moved to Hillsboro, Kansas. There he stayed always busy with gardening and volunteering. He immediately joined the Lions’ Club and helped at the Adobe House Museum. He was an active proponent of recycling in Hillsboro. Kermit led the Senior Center board, and his interest in Affordable Housing led him to leadership at Grand Oaks and to working with Habitat for Humanity. Carroll “Kay” “Bobo” Melvin Snell, 91, of Hutchinson, died September 24, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born January 18, 1931, in Hutchinson, to Joseph Marvin and Jessie Ellen (Ryerson) Snell.

Carroll graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1949.&nbsp; He joined the United States Army September 1950. In eleven months, he went through the ranks to become Staff Sargent and the unit was returned to state control in 1952. Carroll was recalled to active duty in 1963, for a short time to train in biological and nuclear warfare. He retired from the Army National Guard in 1971, after more than 20 years of service.&nbsp;

Carroll was nicknamed “Kay” while growing up, and later was given the name “Bobo” by his first great-grandson, Austin Mendenhall. From then on this was his new title with family and close friends. Carroll was also known as “Sergeant Snell” in the Army and National Guard, and as “Porter” at the Post Office due to his love of country music.

He was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson. Carroll loved serving others, and most importantly, he loved taking care of his family. He enjoyed game night with the family, whether it was playing cards, Dominoes, or Aggravation. Carroll also enjoyed traveling, and loved western books, movies, and art. He was a big KU basketball fan and enjoyed watching them play with his wife, Joyce. Carroll was known for being an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and he made sure his children and grandchildren were fans too.

He was the definition of a servant leader. Carroll and Jody took care of, mentored, housed, and fed countless people; from family and friends, to people they barely knew. He never knew a stranger and would give you the shirt off of his back, then take you shopping for some more. Carroll was also very well known for his jokes. He probably was the inspiration for the term “Dad Jokes!” Carroll loved life and he lived it big. He was loved by so many for many years and will be missed by many. Carroll’s presence was an energy and light that will still shine for a very long time.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

In January 1954, he met the love of his life, Joyce “Jody” Stroup from Agra. Carroll asked her to marry him on the third date and she said no, but they were together every night and every night he proposed for 14 nights until she finally said yes! On her death bed, she confessed to him, that after the first date, she had written to her mother that she had met the man she planned to marry.

In 1954, he started work at the Hutchinson Post Office for 33 years as a clerk carrier and supervisor, retiring in 1986. Carroll and his wife then purchased Hutchinson Book and Bible, which they operated for six years, and he again retired, closing the store in 1992. During this time, he served five years on the Hutchinson Human Relations Commission, one year on the board of Meals on Wheels, as a deacon and then elder at Eastwood Church of Christ, totaling 22 years of service. Not being content to sit around, he worked as Santa at the Hutchinson mall, Miracle Hearing Aids, and Downtown Development, before having a massive stroke in 1998. He was in the hospital for 28 days and spent months in rehab before becoming 85% active again. After his stroke, he and his wife, Joyce, traveled extensively to Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, and Missouri, especially to Branson.

Carroll is survived by: daughters, Mary Ellen (Michael) Nowlan of Hutchinson, Theresa (Richard) Walker of Fredonia, and Lori (Jerry) Reed of South Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grand-children, great-great-grandchildren, and step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death: by his parents; wife; son, Mark Snell; son-in-law, Robert Mendenhall; three sisters; and five brothers.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary with Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military honors being conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard. Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6—7:30 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Carroll “Kay” “Bobo” Melvin Snell, 91, of Hutchinson, died September 24, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born January 18, 1931, in Hutchinson, to Joseph Marvin and Jessie Ellen (Ryerson) Snell.Carroll graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1949.&nbsp; He joined the United States Army September 1950. In eleven months, he went through the ranks to become Staff Sargent and the unit was returned to state control in 1952. Carroll was recalled to active duty in 1963, for a short time to train in biological and nuclear warfare. He retired from the Army National Guard in 1971, after more than 20 years of service.&nbsp;Carroll was nicknamed “Kay” while growing up, and later was given the name “Bobo” by his first great-grandson, Austin Mendenhall. From then on this was his new title with family and close friends. Carroll was also known as “Sergeant Snell” in the Army and National Guard, and as “Porter” at the Post Office due to his love of country music.He was a member of Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson. Carroll loved serving others, and most importantly, he loved taking care of his family. He enjoyed game night with the family, whether it was playing cards, Dominoes, or Aggravation. Carroll also enjoyed traveling, and loved western books, movies, and art. He was a big KU basketball fan and enjoyed watching them play with his wife, Joyce. Carroll was known for being an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and he made sure his children and grandchildren were fans too.He was the definition of a servant leader. Carroll and Jody took care of, mentored, housed, and fed countless people; from family and friends, to people they barely knew. He never knew a stranger and would give you the shirt off of his back, then take you shopping for some more. Carroll was also very well known for his jokes. He probably was the inspiration for the term “Dad Jokes!” Carroll loved life and he lived it big. He was loved by so many for many years and will be missed by many. Carroll’s presence was an energy and light that will still shine for a very long time.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;In January 1954, he met the love of his life, Joyce “Jody” Stroup from Agra. Carroll asked her to marry him on the third date and she said no, but they were together every night and every night he proposed for 14 nights until she finally said yes! On her death bed, she confessed to him, that after the first date, she had written to her mother that she had met the man she planned to marry.In 1954, he started work at the Hutchinson Post Office for 33 years as a clerk carrier and supervisor, retiring in 1986. Sheryl Ann Hoffman, 75, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 25, 2022, surrounded by family at McPherson Hospital.&nbsp; She was a retired bookkeeper/secretary for Hassman Oil Co. in McPherson.

Sheryl was born on August 24, 1947, in West Point, NE, the daughter of Robert Edward and Annie Mae (Roberts) Fenske.&nbsp; She graduated from West Point High School.&nbsp; In 1968, Sheryl was united in marriage to William “Bill” Tietz.&nbsp; He died in February 1969.&nbsp; She married Joe Hoffman in November 1970.

Survivors include: two daughters, Jamie Hoffman of McPherson, KS and Jessica Behrens (James) of McPherson; siblings, Lonnie Fenske of Phoenix, AZ and Robert Fenske (Mary Kay) of Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren, Dezirae Brinck (Jessie), Sierra Behrens, Hayleigh Gagnebin (Jordan), Slade Wiley, Ethan Behrens, Zachary Hoffman, Ava Wilson, and Paityn Behrens; five great-grandchildren, Brookelyn, Weston, Emersyn, Dakota, and Abigail; four nieces &amp; nephews, Chad Fenske, Mike Fenske, Lori Mersch, and Lisa Sullivan; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill Tietz; and longtime companion, Robert Neufeldt.
