David R. Bell, 75, of Isabel, died Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. He was born on December 12, 1946 in Medicine Lodge, the son of James L. Bell and Fern (Funk) Bell. On November 21, 1969, he married Joyce (Jones) Bell in Medicine Lodge. She survives. David was a school bus driver for USD 254. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, the U.S. Army National Guard, the Pretty Prairie Saddle Club, the Pratt Saddle Club, the Barber County School Board and the Valley Township Board. Surviving in addition to his wife, Joyce Bell of Isabel, are four children, Melanie (Travis) Hermstein of Iola, Ginger (Bruce) Allman of Wichita, D.J. (Angie) Bell of Dripping Springs, TX, and Lucas (Kelly) Bell of Lee’s Summit, MO; Nine grandchildren, Travis Hermstein, II, Peyton Allman, Owen Allman, Logan Bell, Brock Bell, Tyler Bell, Taylor Bell, Carson Bell, and Kennedy Bell. David was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Glenda Bell, Rita Kimball, and Lawrence Bell. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., at the First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge, with Pastor Tom Walters officiating. John Louis Beck of Newton, went to Heaven on August 15, 2022, at the age of 89.

He was born on April 21, 1933, in Claflin, the son of Charles and Mary (Bieberle) Beck.

On September 14, 1954, he was united in marriage to Elsie Rous in Claflin. The couple would have celebrated their 68th&nbsp;anniversary.

A longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, John and Elsie gave freely of their time helping with funeral dinners, decorating at Christmas, and helping anywhere they could.

John was a proud veteran who served in the United States Air Force.

John always looked forward to the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, vacationing in Colorado, and taking trips to the east coast. He enjoyed meeting people and made lifelong friends everywhere they traveled.

John is survived by his wife, Elsie Beck; children, Mike Beck and wife Anita, Sandy Liby and husband Steve, Jim Beck and wife Carol, and Theresa Beck; brother, Bob Beck and wife Nancy; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Larry Beck and Jerome Beck; and sister, Evelyn (Beck) Woerz.

The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 19, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newton. Rosary will take place the same day as the service at 10:00 a.m.. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.

Dorothy Ann Butler, 88, of McPherson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Pine Village, Moundridge.&nbsp; She had worked as a manager for the Pic-Quik Store &nbsp;and Taylor-Mart, both in McPherson, and then was a cashier for Dillons.

Dorothy was born on January 1, 1934, in McPherson, the daughter of Richard and Della (Unruh) Decker.&nbsp;

Survivors include: two sons, Steve Butler of McPherson, KS and Mike (Julie) Butler of McPherson; companion, Robert Crow of Inman; siblings, DaVera (Tom) Leone of Pawtucket, RI, Nola Unruh of Galva, Karen (Herb) Baird of McPherson, Richard “Dick” (Florette) Decker of Colorado, and Carmon Decker of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren, Brian (Sabrina) Butler of Hoisington, Stephanie (Nathan) Ravenstein of Hutchinson, Dustin (Katie) Butler of Lawrence, and Sarah (J.D.) Reeves of Augusta; ten great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Karen enjoyed doing art work, reading mystery books, bible studies, dancing and spending time with her friends and family. Karen Porter was united in marriage to Terry Lane Fay on Feb. 7, 1958 in Salina. This union established their first home together in Salina, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, two sons and a daughter, Timothy, Teia and Daniel. She is survived by her husband Terry Fay, of Inman; her children, Timothy Fay and his wife Cindy, of Inman, Teia Janzen and her husband James, of Galva, and Daniel Fay and his wife Janet, of Inman; her siblings, Don Porter, of Gallatin, Missouri, Judy Hall and her husband Darrel, of Ocala, Florida, Rick Lyttel and his wife Jo Beth, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Judy Huff and her husband Lonnie, of Grove, Oklahoma and Debbie Creamer and her husband Lee, of Solon, Iowa. Thomas Michael Kearney, 67, of McPherson, passed away at 2:16 PM, Monday, August 15th, 2022 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. 

Thomas was born in Larned, on October 30, 1954, a son of Regina Mary (Gonnering) and John Thomas Kearney. Thomas attended St. Bernard's Elementary School, Belpre, Kansas, and graduated from Macksville High School, Macksville, in 1973. After high school, he attended Barton County Community College, Great Bend, and graduated from Fort Hays State University, Hays, with his Master's Degree. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, McPherson, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Thomas worked for the Leoti, Utica, Palco, Peabody, and McPherson School Districts as a Teacher and Guidance Counselor. 

Thomas Michael Kearney was united in marriage to Teresa Louise Goudy on July 14, 1979 at the Christian Church of Macksville. The young couple established their first home together in Utica. This union was blessed with the birth of two children, Erin Michelle and Kristen Louise. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of over 43 years, Louise Kearney, of McPherson; their children, Erin Kearney, of Silver Spring, Maryland and Kristen Nolan and husband Spencer, of Spring Hill; his brother, David Kearney, of Larned; his four grandchildren, James Daniel, Irena Louise, Joseph Thomas, and Luke Alexander Nolan; nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, John and Regina Kearney, a brother, John Patrick Kearney and a sister, Mary Kathleen Sculley.

Wallace “Wally” Rons, 92, of Arma, passed away at 8:50 A.M., Saturday, August 13, 2022, at his home. He was born August 17, 1929, in Arma, the son of Lay and Anna Polsak Rons. 

Wally was a lifelong Arma resident. He graduated from Arma High School with the class of 1947, and later attended the Chicago Technical College. Wally was a self-employed carpenter and plumber. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation and was a custodian for Northeast High School in Arma. Wally served in the United States Army during the Korean War from October 2, 1951 until his honorable discharge on July 7, 1953 attaining the rank of Sergeant. He received the United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Soldier’s+ Medal and Korean Service Medal with Bronze Camp Star. In July of 2006, Wally was finally awarded the Soldier’s Medal. He was leaving a mess tent near Soksal-lyong, Korea in 1953, when a truck crashed into the tent and caught fire. Wally, who worked in tent, ran back to the fire to help save his buddies. For his actions, he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, which recognizes heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arma, where he served as CYO Leader, and member of the American Legion Lon Helm Post #182 of Arma. Wally was also a member of the Arma Christmas Club, where he would replace the burnt-out Christmas lights. 

On April 28, 1951, Wally was united in marriage with Betty J. Zibert at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Arma. They shared 67 years together. She preceded him in death on March 23, 2019. He is also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leo Rons; and great-grandson, Canaan Colby Rons. 

Wally is survived by his daughter, Cindy Ashmore and husband Dave of Arma; son, Barry Rons and wife Joy of St. Johns, MI; four grandchildren, Blayne Rons and wife Teresa of Lyons, Dustin Ashmore and wife Trina of Frontenac, Heather Tedlock and husband Kyle of Frontenac, and Chase Rons and wife Allison of Broken Arrow, OK; and three great-grandchildren, Landon Hege, Brayden Rons, and Fischer Tedlock.

 Funeral mass will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 19, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arma, with Father Lee Yoakam officiating. Verlin J. Richert, 71, of Assaria, Kansas left his family too soon on Saturday morning, August 13, 2022, after losing his battle with Dementia, surrounded by the love of his family.

Verlin was born on September 9, 1950 in Goessel, the son of Orville and Delores (Jantz) Richert. He was raised and received his education in Durham, Kansas, and graduated from Durham High School in 1968. Verlin left the family farm to attend Brown Mackie College in Salina, receiving an Associates Degree in Business. Verlin met the love of his life Edna L. Berens and they were united in marriage on June 10, 1972, in Durham. They made their home in Salina, Kansas for six years. Verlin and Edna welcomed their son, Preston, in 1974, and their daughter, Pamela, in 1976. Shortly after their children were born, they built a home in Assaria, Kansas where he resided until his passing.

Verlin began his working career at International Harvester after graduating from Brown Mackie College. He then worked for Exide Battery until gaining employment at Forever Oak in Salina, Kansas. This is where he combined his love for wood furniture and craftsmanship and his gift of never knowing a stranger. Verlin opened his own furniture store, Oak Treasures, in Wichita. After closing his store, Verlin retired from Sam’s Club in 2018.

Verlin was an active member of his community and Assaria Lutheran Church. In his younger years, he was a member of the Assaria Jaycees.  He was a 4H project leader in woodworking and assisted in judging projects for many years.  He served as an Assaria City Council member for 8 years, maintained the Assaria Community Building, and also helped with the Assaria Community Garden.

In his free time, Verlin enjoyed woodworking and carving and always looked forward to traveling with Edna and extended family. Whether it be by bus or cruise ship, Verlin and Edna cherished the time they had together to enjoy new experiences and see new places. 

Verlin had such a big heart and his family meant everything to him. He spent his time attending his childrens’ activities, assisted them with 4H fair projects, and lent a helping hand to anyone who was in need. Verlin adored his seven grandchildren and made time to build projects with each. He also traveled all over the state to attend their activities, or just spend time with them. 

Verlin is survived by his wife Edna Richert of the home; son Preston M. Richert (Camille) of Winfield; daughter Pamela M. Hamlin (Chad) of Hugoton; sisters Krystal Jensen of McPherson, Annette Goering (Randy) of Great Bend; brother Bentley Richert (Connie) of Buhler; a very special aunt Lillian Peters (Joe) of North Newton; grandchildren Rozlynn Richert, Rhyanna Richert, Rheegyn Richert, Rylan Richert, Mitchell Hamlin, McKenna Hamlin, and Mikyn Hamlin; and many nieces and nephews.

Verlin was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Delores Richert; paternal grandparents Peter and Linda (Jantz) Richert and maternal grandparents Benjamin and Alma (Johnson) Jantz. 

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 19, at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, Lindsborg.

Shortly after their children were born, they built a home in Assaria, Kansas where he resided until his passing.Verlin began his working career at International Harvester after graduating from Brown Mackie College. He then worked for Exide Battery until gaining employment at Forever Oak in Salina, Kansas. This is where he combined his love for wood furniture and craftsmanship and his gift of never knowing a stranger. Verlin opened his own furniture store, Oak Treasures, in Wichita. After closing his store, Verlin retired from Sam’s Club in 2018.Verlin was an active member of his community and Assaria Lutheran Church. In his younger years, he was a member of the Assaria Jaycees. He was a 4H project leader in woodworking and assisted in judging projects for many years. He served as an Assaria City Council member for 8 years, maintained the Assaria Community Building, and also helped with the Assaria Community Garden.In his free time, Verlin enjoyed woodworking and carving and always looked forward to traveling with Edna and extended family. Whether it be by bus or cruise ship, Verlin and Edna cherished the time they had together to enjoy new experiences and see new places. Verlin had such a big heart and his family meant everything to him. He spent his time attending his childrens’ activities, assisted them with 4H fair projects, and lent a helping hand to anyone who was in need. Verlin adored his seven grandchildren and made time to build projects with each. He also traveled all over the state to attend their activities, or just spend time with them. Verlin is survived by his wife Edna Richert of the home; son Preston M. Richert (Camille) of Winfield; daughter Pamela M. Hamlin (Chad) of Hugoton; sisters Krystal Jensen of McPherson, Annette Goering (Randy) of Great Bend; brother Bentley Richert (Connie) of Buhler; a very special aunt Lillian Peters (Joe) of North Newton; grandchildren Rozlynn Richert, Rhyanna Richert, Rheegyn Richert, Rylan Richert, Mitchell Hamlin, McKenna Hamlin, and Mikyn Hamlin; and many nieces and nephews.Verlin was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Delores Richert; paternal grandparents Peter and Linda (Jantz) Richert and maternal grandparents Benjamin and Alma (Johnson) Jantz. On August 11, 1969, Frances married Edward Noble Housley. He passed away on March 31, 2006.

Frances was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Edward Housley; grandson, Brenn Collins; four sisters; and three brothers.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no services.

George Robert Rogers went to his heavenly home on August 13, 2022, in the Marion, hospital.

George was born in Herington, on November 11, 1927 to James Albert Rogers and Violet Ethel Mason.&nbsp; He graduated from Herington High School.&nbsp; He served in the United States Army.

He married Dorothy Jane Davenport in El Dorado, on December 11, 1947 and they were married for 65 years until her passing in 2013.

In the early 60’s George and some others kept the church league baseball program going in Herington, and at the end of the season, the players were taken to KC to watch Kansas City play the Yankees.&nbsp; He umpired a lot of ballgames, to include the church league, girls teams, and American Legion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

George loved to give blood.&nbsp; He was disappointed he wasn’t able to give his 100th&nbsp;pint.&nbsp; He had a rare blood type and one time was called off his postal route to give blood for someone.&nbsp; He worked a short while for Beech Aircraft and then worked for the Post Office about 30 years and estimated that he walked the equivalent of 1 ½ times around the world delivering the mail in Herington.

George loved to give a dollar to little kids when he would see them as it brought him great joy.

He attended Rock Island Church in Herington for many years.&nbsp;

He liked living at the Hilltop.&nbsp; He played pool, worked puzzles, and talked to everyone getting on and off the elevator.&nbsp; He recently moved to Marian Assisted Living and was happy in his short time there.

George is survived by four children:&nbsp; Mike Rogers (Pat) Kerrville, TX; Linda Troop (Judson) Lawton, OK; Dean Rogers, Tucson, AZ, and Kent Rogers, Herington; four grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and brother Jack Rogers, Wichita.

Preceding him in death were his wife; his parents; a brother, James Rogers; a sister, Alberta (Berky) Smith; and great grandson Caulen Hendon.

A private family celebration of his life was held at the Herington cemetery on August&nbsp; 14, 2022.

Bonita Joan Heinrichs, 85, of Goessel, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Schowalter Villa.&nbsp; Bonnie was born on June 21, 1937.&nbsp; She was the first child of Otto J. and Martha C. (Schmidt) Unruh.

She was born at the Newton Hospital and grew up on a farm near Goessel.&nbsp; Her parents lived on several rental farms around Goessel and eventually moved to her father’s family farm east of Goessel. &nbsp;Bonnie attended school at Green Valley District 32 in Marion County and graduated from Goessel High School in 1955.&nbsp; Her first job was as a floor girl at Bethesda Hospital in Goessel.&nbsp; She met Lowell Heinrichs while they were both attending Goessel High School. &nbsp;Lowell and Bonnie were married on June 1, 1956 at the Tabor Mennonite Church near Goessel, KS.&nbsp; &nbsp;During that time, Reverend H. B. Schmidt was advising young couples getting married to go into 1-W service.&nbsp; Lowell and Bonnie moved to Evanston, Illinois where they both worked as nurse aids. After two years of 1-W service, Lowell &amp; Bonnie moved home to Hillsboro, KS where Bonnie worked at home and Lowell took a job at The Hillsboro Body Shop.&nbsp; They lived in several different rental houses before buying their first home on South Ash Street in Hillsboro, KS.&nbsp; Two sons were born to them. &nbsp;Romney was born in the Evanston Hospital in Illinois and Kendall was born in the Bethesda Hospital in Goessel, KS.&nbsp; In 1970, Bonnie &amp; Lowell purchased and moved to the farm east of Goessel where the boys grew up and attended school.&nbsp;

In 1969, Bonnie started attending Tabor College in Hillsboro and graduated in 1972 with a degree in English &amp; German language.&nbsp; She attended Emporia State University for two summers and in the fall of 1973, accepted a job as librarian in the Remington/Whitewater School District.&nbsp; She was in charge of five small school libraries, a different school each day of the week.&nbsp; In 1974, she became the librarian at Goessel USD 411 as the secondary level librarian.&nbsp; For the next 24 years she was the librarian at Goessel High School. She again took classes at Emporia State University during the summers and in 1983 received a Master’s Degree in Special Education &amp; Learning Disabilities. &nbsp;During her time at GHS Bonnie was also the Junior class sponsor for many years which was an interesting and enjoyable time working with students outside of the classroom.&nbsp;

Bonnie grew up in the Tabor Mennonite Church, was baptized on June 6, 1954 by Reverend H.B. Schmidt, and was an active member until her death.&nbsp; She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, and being a member of the Willing Helpers Sewing Society. She was also church librarian and archivist for many years.

Bonnie enjoyed reading, gardening, embroidery, and quilt making.&nbsp; She enjoyed raising flowers and plants in her greenhouse from which she also contributed plants &amp; flowers to the MCC sale in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; Lowell &amp; Bonnie enjoyed trips to visit family and also camping and fishing trips with family and friends.&nbsp; Bonnie enjoyed playing and working with her grandchildren and enjoyed having family over for the holidays. Lowell &amp; Bonnie took an Alaskan Cruise with their children &amp; grandchildren for their 50th&nbsp;wedding anniversary.

Bonnie &amp; Lowell enjoyed living on the farm until March 2020 when they moved to the Lakeside Apartments in Hesston, KS.&nbsp; There Bonnie continued to fill her time with plants, flowers, &amp; lots of reading.&nbsp; Bonnie lived at the Schowalter Villa Health Care Center at the time of her passing.

Bonnie is survived by her son, Romney (Donna) Heinrichs, grandchildren, Andrew &amp; Katrina of Hesston; son, Kendall (Jana) Heinrichs, grandchildren, Vanessa &amp; Logan of Wichita, KS; brother, Robert (Connie) Unruh of Newton; sister, Mae (Dean) Nelson of McPherson; and sister, Elaine (John) Ratzlaff of Buhler. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Heinrichs; parents, Otto &amp; Martha Unruh; and infant twin brothers.

Joan Kay Showalter, 72, died peacefully August 12, 2022, at her home in rural Haven, surrounded by her loving and devoted family.  She was born November 8, 1949, in Hutchinson, to Harold D. and Lillian Lucille (Davis) Conrad. 

Joan graduated from Haven High School in 1967, and received her associates degree from Hutchinson Community Junior College. She worked over 20 years as a bookkeeper for Yoder Elevator, and was also a homemaker.  Joan enjoyed reading, gardening, canning, and shopping.  Above all, Joan loved following her grandchildren as they took part in school activities. When it became too difficult to attend their events in person, Joan made sure she knew where her grandchildren were and what they were doing by way of technology; their cell phones.   It was important to Joan for everyone to know their Lord and Savior.  She attended Bible Study Fellowship for many years.   In addition, Joan was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Haven, for over 50 years, had been a member of LWML and taught Sunday school. 

On January 26, 1968, she married her high school sweetheart, C.B. Showalter, at First Christian Church, Hutchinson. 

Joan is survived by:  her husband of over 54 years, C.B. Showalter of Haven; children, Ann Knepp (Gerald) of Hutchinson and their children, Caleb Hopkins and Noah Hopkins, and Noah’s son, Greyson, Wade Showalter (Stephanie) of Haven, and their children, Kirsten Rucker (Johannon), Cody Showalter, and Sarah Showalter, and Sarah’s son, Ezra, Penny Showalter of Hutchinson and her children, Lillianna Glacet and Carlie Glacet; sister, Rebecca Loden (Don) of Joplin, MO; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Glenn Showalter (Ethelyn) of Hutchinson, Vicky Saxton (Kelly) of Dallas, TX, and Mike Nichols (Chris) of Wichita; son-in-law, André Glacet; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Lelia Mae “Lee” Pennick, 100, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at Thorne Care Center. She was born November 26, 1921, in Argonia, to John Constantine and Eva Belle (Dine) Wilcox.

Lee spent her early school years in Argonia and moved to Mulvane when she was eight. She graduated from Mulvane High School in 1940, and Wesley Nursing School in Wichita in 1943, as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Lee married her high school sweetheart, Max G. Pennick, on August 15, 1943, at Mulvane Methodist Church. They lived in Idaho and in Washington, DC, during World War II. In 1946, Lee and Max moved to Winfield, and in 1960, they moved to Hutchinson. Max died November 3, 1995.

Lee was a nurse for a pediatrician in Wichita for a year. During World War II, she worked in Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Washington, DC. After the war, Lee was a nurse at Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield and was a pediatric nurse supervisor at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson. She was a nurse supervisor in the emergency department at the Hutchinson Clinic. Lee retired in 1983, but continued to work part-time and later volunteered at the clinic.

She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Duos Sunday school class, and belonged to UMW. Lee was a member of PEO Chapter EK and numerous nursing organizations. She enjoyed playing women’s and couple’s bridge. Lee attended hundreds of city band concerts and symphonies, as Max was a percussionist in both. She enjoyed the Kansas State Fair, NJCAA Basketball Tournament, Kansas City Royals baseball, embroidery, and sewing. Most of all, Lee enjoyed her family and friends.

She is survived by: her daughter, Mary Rexroad of Tulsa, OK; her son, Richard Pennick (Debbie) of Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Jason Rexroad (Jennifer), Jaime (Rexroad) Nutt, Joel Pennick (Ashley), Mark Pennick (Melissa), and Rachel (Pennick) Hoffman (Nick); and 13 great-grandchildren, Max, Ted, Eliza, Chloe, Madeline, Lucy, Jason, Blake, Logan, Finley, Wyatt, Maizey, and Oliver.

Lee was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Lucille, Burke, Bula, and Paul.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

After the war, Lee was a nurse at Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield and was a pediatric nurse supervisor at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson. She was a nurse supervisor in the emergency department at the Hutchinson Clinic. Lee retired in 1983, but continued to work part-time and later volunteered at the clinic.She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Duos Sunday school class, and belonged to UMW. Lee was a member of PEO Chapter EK and numerous nursing organizations. She enjoyed playing women’s and couple’s bridge. Lee attended hundreds of city band concerts and symphonies, as Max was a percussionist in both. She enjoyed the Kansas State Fair, NJCAA Basketball Tournament, Kansas City Royals baseball, embroidery, and sewing. Most of all, Lee enjoyed her family and friends.She is survived by: her daughter, Mary Rexroad of Tulsa, OK; her son, Richard Pennick (Debbie) of Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Jason Rexroad (Jennifer), Jaime (Rexroad) Nutt, Joel Pennick (Ashley), Mark Pennick (Melissa), and Rachel (Pennick) Hoffman (Nick); and 13 great-grandchildren, Max, Ted, Eliza, Chloe, Madeline, Lucy, Jason, Blake, Logan, Finley, Wyatt, Maizey, and Oliver.Lee was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Lucille, Burke, Bula, and Paul.Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Galen R. Wiens, 87, passed away August 11, 2022, in Higginsville, MO.
 He was born January 8, 1935, in Hutchinson, KS, the son of Cornelius
and Lucille Penner Wiens.  He served 20 years in the United States
Navy.  He then served as a police office in Inman and was Chief of
Police in Galva.  He was a member of the Inman Mennonite Church.

On March 25,
1969, He married Dorothy F. Bonds in Oahu, HI.  She passed away on
March 27, 2018.

Survivors include
his children, Debra (Tony) Whitis, Oskaloosa, Iowa, Ronnie (Yonok)
Hutton, San Antonio, TX, Pam Johnson, Higginsville, MO, and Gary

Barbara Jean Berger, 82, died August 16, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.  She was born August 29, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Ernest H. “Jack” and Ruth Louise (Pike) Barker.

Barbara was a homemaker, and always started her days off with one can of Pepsi for breakfast.  She enjoyed numerous hobbies and interests such as playing cards and crocheting.  For over 30 years, Barbara enjoyed lunch on Wednesdays with “the girls”, and was a lifetime bowler.   She and her late husband, Donald, made many memories with their family and friends at their place on Table Rock Lake, Shell Knob, MO. Devotions were an integral part of Barbara’s daily routine, and she spent hours each day reading her Bible.

On February 19, 1963, she married Donald Lee Berger, in Colorado Springs, CO.  He died May 27, 2011, after they shared 48 years of marriage.

Barbara is survived by:  children, Christopher Berger of Enid, OK, and Kimmie Orem of Hutchinson; sister, Betty Schemm (Frank) of Tulsa, OK; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by:  her parents; husband, Donald; daughter, Kathy Poole; son, Kent Wade Berger; brothers, Buddy and Billy Barker; and a sister, Beverly McGill.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2022, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Matt Stafford officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. William Albert “Willie” Relph, 66, died August 15, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born January 9, 1956, in Oberlin, KS, to Lowell and Juanita (Tally) Relph.

Willie graduated from Salina South High School in 1974 and received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Washburn University in 1978. He worked as a police officer in Garden City for 11 years and then worked in sales in both hardware and pre-fab homes. Willie was a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed motocross racing. He also loved hunting pheasants and fishing and was a diehard Royals fan.

In 1978, Willie married Sue Hobbs and they had two children together, Eric and Emily. On December 2, 2017, he married Sherry Lynn (Hullet) Schroeder, in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are: his children, Eric Relph (Chandra) of Spirit Lake, IA, and Emily Relph (Stephine Randall) of Coffeyville; grandchildren, Ethan Relph (Alejandra), Gracie Relph, Alli Relph, Kacely Relph; great-grandchildren, Genesis Relph, Eric Relph; mother, Juanita Relph of South Hutchinson; sister, Cheri Bergmeier (Brian) of Greeley, CO; brother, Thomas Relph (Betty) of Burleson, TX; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lowell.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Mildred Layman, brother Wilfred Thiel, and her husband, Warren F. Kirkpatrick who passed away in 2007.

Maxine is survived by daughters Ramona “Raye” McAdam of Wichita and Anita Kirkpatrick, Kingman. She is also survived by her beloved little dog, Pearl.

A lifelong resident of Kingman, Maxine was a legal secretary, enjoying decades working for the Wunsch law firm and for Dave Gaumer.&nbsp; She grew up wanting to be a secretary and fondly recalled “playing secretary” even as a child. Her dreams were fulfilled many time over as she enjoyed a long and successful career as a respected and trusted professional. &nbsp;

In 1949, Maxine was married to Paul McAdam. Daughter Ramona was born to this marriage. In 1955, she married Warren Kirkpatrick and Anita was their daughter.

Maxine was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, and loved dogs.

Maxine and Warren enjoyed many happy times together going to farm sales, driving in the country, vacationing, and just being together.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022 at the Livingston Funeral Home.

Doris Emilie (Flebeau) Schmidt, 93, of Hesston, passed away Friday, August 12, 2022 at Schowalter Villa.&nbsp; She was born September 24, 1928 in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Raymond and Josephine (Frey) Flebeau.

Doris graduated from Hartford High School with the class of 1946, and later graduated from Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in 1949.&nbsp;

She was a former member of Friedenstal Mennonite Church, rural Tampa, KS.&nbsp; Doris and Junia later joined Faith Mennonite Church in Newton, where they have been members since 2005.

Doris worked at Hesston Corporation as a nurse for 17 years.&nbsp; She later worked in retirement centers in Newton until late 1996.

She was united in marriage to Junia Schmidt on February 19, 1955 in Middletown, Connecticut.&nbsp; They shared 67 years of marriage.&nbsp; He survives.

Other survivors include her five daughters, Laurel (Karl) Louderbaugh of Yates Center, Carol (Monty) John of Winfield, Patricia (Randall) Stauffer of Hesston, Cynthia Payton of Lawrence, and Paula (Troy) Martin of Milford, NE; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and son-in-law, David Payton.

Doris was a 1958 graduate of Hutchinson High School, and received an associate degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1961.&nbsp; She was a secretary at Colladay Hardware, Hutchinson, and also Manpower Temporary Service, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Doris was an active member of Crossroads Christian Church, especially providing volunteer help in the children’s programs and activities, and serving as a Sunday school teacher.&nbsp; She enjoyed sewing, crafting, and gardening.&nbsp; Doris was involved in many activities, but her most important activity was being a homemaker.&nbsp; She loved her family and cherished her role of being a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend.&nbsp;

On August 5, 1962, Doris married James ‘Jim’ A. O’Neal, at the South Hutchinson Christian Church, South Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 60 years of marriage.

She is survived by: her husband, Jim O’Neal of Hutchinson; children, David (Tammy) O’Neal of Milwaukee, WI, and Pamela (Daniel) Lindgren of Woodbridge, VA; and grandchildren, Mackenzie O’Neal, Connor O’Neal, Hunter O’Neal, Emily Lindgren, Erik Lindgren, and Elise Lindgren.

Lee “Pete” Laaser was born in Kansas City, on April 18, 1957, to Norman and Thornton Laaser.

Pete is survived by his son, Tyler Laaser and wife Alison of Topeka; daughters Selena Klumpy of Emporia, Dakota Elvarez and husband Alex of Mankato, and Meghan Overton of Blue Springs, Missouri; brother, Brett Laaser and wife June of Texas; and sister, Dawn and husband Jim of Arizona. Once Pete married Jan Stucky Laaser he gained four more children, Emma, Ethan, Elicia, and Andrew Stucky, they also survive along with six grandsons, and four granddaughters.

Pete will be remembered for his love of cooking, smoking meats and great Thanksgiving dinners. He always wanted others to enjoy his cooking. He had a passion for training his dogs and watching Kansas City Chiefs football games. Pete always took great pride in his work and abilities when working with concrete.

Lee “Pete” Laaser was born in Kansas City, on April 18, 1957, to Norman and Thornton Laaser.Pete is survived by his son, Tyler Laaser and wife Alison of Topeka; daughters Selena Klumpy of Emporia, Dakota Elvarez and husband Alex of Mankato, and Meghan Overton of Blue Springs, Missouri; brother, Brett Laaser and wife June of Texas; and sister, Dawn and husband Jim of Arizona. Lee Eldean Curtis, age 91, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2022 at the Kansas Soldier’s Home in Fort Dodge. He was born on Nov. 17, 1930 in Hutchinson, the son of Randall Lee and Augusta Julia (Dorrschuck) Curtis. 

Lee served in the U.S. Army 24th Division from 1954 to 1956. He graduated from Kansas State University with an Agriculture and Applied Science Degree. He earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education at Northwestern University. Lee had been a real estate agent, school teacher, and life-long farmer. He married Roberta M. Monroe and later married Mary R. “Mert” (Lancaster-Hays) on May 31, 1980 at the Antrim United Methodist Church in Stafford County. Lee was a member of the Antrim United Methodist Church, Kanza CO-OP, NRA, and the Rose Valley Township Board. 

Lee is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carol (Jerry) Long; step son Mark (Teresa) Hays; grandchildren, Brandon (Crystal) Hays, Christine (Jason) John, Dedra (Nathan) Hogan, Samantha Long, Ava (Kyle) Bunker, Ethan (Ariel) Long, Grant Gordon, Olivia Cade, Lacey Cade; step grandchildren, Elijah Basore, Cody Cade, Haley Cade, Ben Cade, and Josh Cade; 14 great grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren and a sister-in-law Marilyn Curtis.  He was preceded in death by both parents; a daughter, Mary Jill Cade; a step daughter, Gayle Hays-Gordon-Basore; a brother, Philip L. Curtis. 

Memorial service will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022 at the Antrim United Methodist Church, SW 60th St. and SW 20th Ave., with Pastor Benjamin Simba and Reverend Chelsea Shrack. Directions to the church are, 6 miles south of 281/50 roundabout and 2 miles west.     Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Rose Valley Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Twila Dumond, 74, of Lyons, passed away August 10, 2022, at her son’s home in Augusta. She was born August 6, 1948, in Cedar Vale, the daughter of Leslie and Rosa (Watson) Wolfe. 

She has been a resident of Lyons since July of 1976, formerly of Ellsworth. She graduated from Sedan High School with the class of 1966. She then went on to study computer punch card programming in Kansas City and later attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Twila was united in marriage with John W. “Jay” Dumond on August 18, 1967, in Caney. He preceded her in death on September 13, 2018. 

Twila was actively involved in church and community life. She was a member of Lyons Assembly of God Church for 46 years. A small business owner, she owned and operated DuMond Printing for 20 years, retiring on March 1, 2022. Committed to sharing God’s Word, she served as regional president for Gideons Auxiliary International. She was a former Lyons City Council woman, member of the Lyons Chamber of Commerce, helped with prison ministry in Rice County, was an Advocate for Teen Challenge, and a volunteer for the Rice County Census. Hospitality was one of her many gifts, and her home was often full of people. 

Twila is survived by her three sons, Rodney Dumond and wife Liz of Niantic, CT., Rev. Travis Dumond and wife Melissa of Augusta, Rick Dumond of Lyons; daughter, Angela Bonnema and husband Rev. Jamie of Abilene; borrowed son, Ronnie Young and wife Kimberly of Golden, CO.; sisters, Goldie Mae Seibel of Arkansas City, Willa Bea and husband Virgil Shull of Chatauqua, Phoebe and husband Stan Irey of Menifee, CA., Louise and husband Pondu Shenoy of Mountain View, CA., Clara Ann Roebuck of Chatauqua, Treva Douglass of Lyons; six grandchildren, William, Colin, Samuel, Amelia and Lydia Dumond, Sterling Bonnema, and borrowed grandsons Wyatt and Tyler Young. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Larry, Ray and infant brother Dale Wolfe; sisters; Bonnie Munday and Bernyce Campbell.

Leonard John Henning, 94, was born on March 8th, 1928 in Willowdale. He is the son of Anthony “Antone” and Emma Mertens Henning; and brother to Julius, Anthony Jr., Robert, Eugene, Joan, and Florence.

Leonard grew up near Willowdale farming with his father and brothers. His mother, Emma, passed away when he was only 12 years old.

On August 13th, 1951, Leonard married Rosalyn “Rosie” Schwartz in Great Bend. Together they had 6 children – Geneva, Stanley, Randall, Sheila, Sharon, and Vernon “Bud”.

Leonard and Rosie raised their family near Willowdale and made their living raising cattle, chickens, pigs, and wheat. Tragedy struck during the harvest of 1974. While Leonard was working on the carburetor of a combine, it backfired, catching him on fire. He was blown off the machine and broke his ankle badly in the fall. He spent the next 2 years battling complications of the accident and nearly losing his leg.

When he was not working on the farm, Leonard’s favorite thing to do was fish. In the winter, he would take his boat and camper down to Corpus Christi, TX. There he spent his days catching Red Fish, Sheephead, Flounder, an occasional seagull, and usually the back of someone's head. He loved to cast right over your line if you were in a better spot than him. He also made good use of the dip net - not to help bring in a big one - but to knock your fish off the line if it was bigger than his.

Leonard’s personality was larger than life. His ornery sense of humor and contagious laugh put a smile on everyone’s face. His stories were always just a “little” exaggerated, and he would never hesitate to tell you exactly what he thought. Family meant everything to him. Beating family at a game of 5 point pitch meant even more. He was famous for bidding 4 on the deuce and confusing everyone, mostly his partners. Holidays spent gathered together playing pitch are a cherished memory for the generations Leonard and Rosie have left behind.

Leonard lived his life mostly close to home, taking occasional drives to Salt Plains or Cripple Creek or maybe just around the section to check out the wheat. He attended St. Peter's Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, both in Willowdale.

Leonard was preceeded in death by his parents; his grandson, Jed; his brothers, Julius, Anthony Jr., and Robert; his children, Randy, and Sheila; and his beloved wife of 67 years, Rosie.

Leonard was called to heaven on August 13th, 2022 at Wheatlands Health Care Center, Kingman.

He is survived by: his children, Geneva Henning (Gary), Stanley Henning (Becky), Sharon Nowak (Randy), Vernon “Bud” Henning; his sisters, Florence “DeeDee” Elsen, Joan Schwartz; his brother, Eugene “Gene” Henning; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 1 great, great grandson.

Steven “Jejak” Lee Michael Martin, 72, passed away August 13, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born September 26, 1949, in Rossville, to Paul “Mook” and Nellie Irene (Gibson) Martin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Steve was a 1968 graduate of McPherson High School. He graduated from Brown Mackie College, Salina, with an associate's degree in business.&nbsp; Steve was a former employee of Farmland Industries, Willbros Pipeline Construction, and retired from Calm Creek Carriers as a truck driver. He was also co-owner of MSI Wireless.&nbsp;
