Evelyn Allene Urich, 75, passed away October 21, 2022, at Schowalter Villa Health Care, Hesston.&nbsp; She was born December 6, 1946, in Sterling, KS, to John Roy Oden and Mabel Marie (Dyke) Oden.

Evelyn was a graduate of Sterling High School, Sterling.&nbsp; She was employed in the Housekeeping Department at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, formerly Hutchinson Hospital Corporation, retiring with many years of service.

Evelyn was a ‘professional and selfless’ volunteer.&nbsp; She spent many hours volunteering for various organizations because of the need to share her servant’s heart and caring personality with others.&nbsp; Evelyn enjoyed her cats and dogs, and feeding the birds and squirrels that visited her yard.&nbsp; She was known to be ornery, loud, and stubborn, but never in a mean-spirited way.

Evelyn is survived by:&nbsp; her daughter, Regina (Ron Betts) Adams of Dillon, MT; grandchildren, Howard (Chayla Pocha) Betts and Veronica Betts; great-grandchildren, Miya Betts and Rodney Betts; daughter, Danielle (Michael) Hunt of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Alexandra (Mark) Richardson, Ethan Hunt, and Ronnie Hunt; great-grandchildren, Ari Richardson, Hunter Richardson, and Finnegan Richardson; brothers, Donald Oden of Alden, Michael (Nancy) Oden of Hutchinson, and Ronald (Deb) Oden of Sterling; and her furry cat companion, Monkeybutt.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; brother, Ralph Roy Oden; and grandson, Edward John Betts.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Roberta “Ruth” Clark was born on April 26, 1939, in Delavan. She is the daughter of Harry and Francis (Filkin) Yakle. She graduated from Wilsey High School in 1956 and went on to study at Emporia State University. She was united in marriage to Robert Clark on June 01, 2002, in Herington.

Ruth worked as a proofreader for the Herington Newspaper. She was also a paraprofessional in the Hope School District. Ruth was a very active and strong member in her church and was on the Board of the Herington Senior Center for twenty years. In her free time, Ruth loved to cross stitch, and would custom make birthday cards for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dianne Kay (Watkins) Surface-Deckard, 72, of Marquette, KS, died October 20, 2022.

She was born November 24, 1949, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the daughter of Virgil and Charlotte Watkins.

She was a 1967 graduate of Marquette High School.

On June 10, 1967, Dianne was united in marriage to Bradley Lowell Surface in Garnett. He preceded her in death in 2006.

On July 5, 2008, Dianne was united in marriage to James Wesley Deckard. He survives.

Dianne loved quilt-making, sewing, spending time with family and her two loving dogs.

Other survivors include her two sons, Michael Surface and wife, Wendy (Swisher), of Topeka, KS and Greg Surface and wife, Victoria (Goss), of Marquette, KS; two-stepsons, Jeremy Deckard and wife, Amy (Hammerschmidt), of Topeka, KS and Chad Deckard and wife, Tere (Bertrand), of Assaria, KS; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one nephew, Brandon Watkins; and one sister, Linda Bowen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, a brother, Jim Watkins, and a nephew, Jeremy Watkins.

Leon Joseph Moeder, 74, died October 19, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp; He was born February 29, 1948, the second child of Engelbert “Bert” and Rita (Sulzman) Moeder.

Leon graduated from Plainville High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University, in 1972. While a student at Fort Hays State University, he was a member of the rodeo club, where Leon became a bull rider. &nbsp;In May 1974, he started his career as an auctioneer and real estate broker.&nbsp; Leon became CEO and owner of Davenport Auction &amp; Realty, Inc., in 1986.&nbsp; In his almost 50-year auctioneer career, Leon proudly helped with over 3,000 auctions ranging from commercial and personal property to diamonds. &nbsp;Most recently, he was a substitute teacher for USD 308.&nbsp; With his humor and quick wit, Leon quickly gained the respect of his students and loved helping to make a difference in their lives.

Leon enjoyed grilling for his family, with steak as his specialty.&nbsp; Listening to sports commentaries and watching his beloved Kansas City Chiefs, in particular Patrick Mahomes, were some of his favorite pastimes. &nbsp;&nbsp;Leon was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

Leon held a special bond with his only grandchild, Brailey.&nbsp; From the moment she was born, Leon was a proud grandpa and one of her biggest cheerleaders.&nbsp; When Brailey had school activities, whether it was a sporting or musical event, he strived to be in attendance.&nbsp; &nbsp;Leon was a one-of-a-kind dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, cowboy, auctioneer, and mentor.&nbsp; There will never be another Leon Moeder!

Tommy was a graduate of Fairfield High School, Langdon, and Garden City Community College, Garden City.

Tommy is survived by:&nbsp; his daughter, Tamara Rumford of Philip, SD; mother, Lola M. Rumford of Abbyville; brother, Bronc Rumford of Abbyville; and grandchildren, Hendrix Smith and Hadley Vander May.

Ingaby Bell Kelley, 91, passed away surrounded by her family on Friday, October 14, 2022 in Wichita, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born in Milo, Missouri to James Loyd Shafer and Bertha Ellen (Richty) Shafer.&nbsp; She was raised and attended various schools in the surrounding area with her brothers and sisters.&nbsp; The family has many stories of their mischiefs which always brought a smile to their faces.&nbsp; Often their trips to town were on the families flatbed truck.&nbsp; She loved playing basketball and sports at school.

She moved with her parents and family to El Dorado, Kansas. On the coldest day of the year 1947 she gave birth to her son Charles Dixon.&nbsp; They moved to Eureka, Kansas and lived where her daughter Coleen was born in 1956.&nbsp; The family moved to Wichita then where she has resided ever since. She has left her family with so many wonderful memories as a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend. Her love of sports and following her children and grandchildren's games of soccer, baseball, basketball, dance, music and so much more.&nbsp; A ride in her daughter's Volkswagen Beetle was her delight and love. Time spent with her family was her greatest joy.

Ingaby is survived by her son Charles (Marjorie) Dixon and daughter Coleen Suffield, all of Wichita, six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, her fur babies Doc and Lady, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.&nbsp; She was preceded by her parents, brothers Joe, Wayne, Glen and Denzil, sisters Francis, Opal and Jesse, husbands Charles Dixon, Jim Keck and Norman Kelley.

Gervis LaDelle Nagle "Delle" passed away on Tuesday, October 11th, 2022, at home with her daughter, Stephanie and longtime friend, Santos, in Wichita, Kansas. Delle was born in Georgetown, Texas in 1946 to Emily Gervis Enochs and John Hester Davis. Delle was a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas, where she enjoyed all the arts the city of Houston had to offer.&nbsp;&nbsp;After moving to Wichita, Kansas seven years ago, she diligently continued to enjoy Final (and Now First) Friday, Wichita Art Museum, and Botanica.&nbsp;&nbsp;She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University.&nbsp;&nbsp;She spearheaded a revolutionary idea to start the country's first spinal cord injury apartments, Independent Lifestyles.&nbsp;&nbsp;Among her favorite jobs were Westminster Manor and School for the blind in Austin, and The Forum and Amazing Place in Houston.

Delle is preceded in death by her parents, Hester and Gervis Davis, her cousin, Gervis Clausel, and her daughter, Marie Schroff, and most importantly, the love of her life, John Nagle. James Earl Blair (Jimmy), passed away on October 14, 2022, at the age of 82 in Newton, at the Kansas Christian Home.

Jimmy was born on August 28, 1940, in Enid, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his brother Bill Blair, sister Roberta O’Dell, his niece Kathie Cook, his cousin Jerry Magers and his loving partner of 38 years Shirley Herbison, daughter Teresa Blair, their adopted children Kathy Frazier, Steve Herbison, April Herbison, Ariana Herbison, Corbin Herbison, Donald Herbison, and Mathew Herbison. He is predeceased by his son Jimmy Blair, his brother Nathanial Blair, mother Thelma Blair, and father Robert (Bob) Blair.

He became a foster parent with Shirley during which time they fostered, counseled, and loved 168 foster children. Jimmy was a truck driver and spent many years working for the Full Vision Factory in Newton, Kansas. Jimmy loved to fish, garden, and do handy work around the house. He had a tremendous skill for painting, which he practiced until he physically was unable to. However, his strongest love and joy and how he wanted to be remembered, was his family.

The cremation and for Jimmy will be done at Petersen’s Funeral Home in Newton.

She moved with her parents and family to El Dorado, Kansas. On the coldest day of the year 1947 she gave birth to her son Charles Dixon.&nbsp; They moved to Eureka, and lived where her daughter Coleen was born in 1956.&nbsp; The family moved to Wichita then where she has resided ever since. She has left her family with so many wonderful memories as a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend. Her love of sports and following her children and grandchildren's games of soccer, baseball, basketball, dance, music and so much more.&nbsp; A ride in her daughter's Volkswagen Beetle was her delight and love. Rosemary Ojeda, 82, died October 19, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society – Hutchinson Village. She was born January 12, 1940, in Hutchinson, to John F. and Elizabeth (Caudillo) Ojeda.

Rosemary attended school in Hutchinson and enjoyed babysitting. She loved God and faithfully attended Mass and prayer at the Adoration Chapel at St. Teresa Catholic Church. She enjoyed watching old television shows, such as Gunsmoke and I Love Lucy, listening to Mexican music, animals and children.

She is survived by: brother, Joseph “Tony” Ojeda and wife Linda; nephews, Schon and Chris Ojeda; nieces, Raquel Tyrell and Dominique Ojeda.

Rosemary is preceded in death by: her parents, brothers, George, Richard and Johnny Ojeda; and infant sister, Juanita Ojeda.

Christine “Joan” Strano, 78, died unexpectedly at her home on October 17, 2022.&nbsp; She was born October 2, 1944, in Wichita, to William Clark and Olive Aileen (Kissick) Anderson.

Joan graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962, and Southwestern College, Winfield, in 1966, earning her bachelor’s degree. &nbsp;

While at Southwestern College, Joan met a young man from Punxsutawney, PA, Richard Francis “Dick” Strano. They were married June 4, 1966, in South Hutchinson.&nbsp; Together, they raised two daughters, and eventually, their family grew to include two wonderful sons-in-law and seven precious grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dick died March 6, 2018, after he and Joan shared nearly 52 years of marriage.

Joan was a natural born teacher.&nbsp; Throughout her career, Joan taught health/physical education and science in Osborne USD 392 and Hutchinson USD 308.&nbsp; Most recently, she was a substitute teacher for Buhler USD 313.&nbsp; In her free time, she enjoyed being outdoors; Joan was an outstanding gardener, and had a talent for growing amazing flowers. She also enjoyed decorating, especially at Christmas. Joans’ greatest joy and calling though was that of being a mom and grandma; she loved her daughters and grandchildren unconditionally.&nbsp; She would do anything for them. Joan attended Grace Bible Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Joan is survived by:&nbsp; daughters, Angie White (Eric) of Hutchinson, and Amy Dye (Derek) of Lawrence; grandchildren, Ethan, Addi, Aidyn and Eli White, and Josie, Emme, and Harper Dye; brother, Jeff Anderson (Rogene) of Lawrence; sisters, Jan Dwyer and Jill Foss of Hutchinson; a sister-in-law, Tamra Strano of Baytown, TX; and her faithful four-legged companions, dogs, Berki and Berne and cats, Rush and Rusty.

Bill was born on December 3, 1945, in Beloit, KS, the son of Dean Harrison and Ida Ann (Leonhart) Williams.&nbsp; He graduated from Downs High School in 1962.&nbsp; On October 15, 1967, Bill was united in marriage to Carol L. VanWey in Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; Three children were born to this union, Candee, Dana, and Kyle.

In Bill’s younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an avid KC Chiefs, KC Royals, and KU Jayhawks fan.&nbsp; Bill’s personality was very easy going, and he thoroughly enjoyed giving everyone a hard time.

He is survived by: three children, Candee Nightingale (Larry), Dana Dossett (Monte), and Kyle Williams (Jennifer), all of McPherson, KS; 12 grandchildren, Nicole, Kelsey, Mayce, Rachel, Hannah, Noah, Alexandra, Tate, Hope, Clara, Surie, and Calypso; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Deanna White of McPherson, KS; former wife, Carol Madron of McPherson, KS; and many extended family and friends.

Everett "Doyle" Bachelder passed away on Friday, October 14th, 2022 in Bel Aire, Kansas. He was born in Valley Center, Kansas to Everett Leo Bachelder and Mildred Mae (Lavender) Bachelder. A lifelong resident of Valley Center he graduated from VCHS in 1949. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then upon his return was a letter carrier for the USPS until retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Donna Ash, and brothers William "Bill" Bachelder and Lawrence Bachelder.

Linda Kay (McQueen) Rhodes, 81, died October 18, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born February 3, 1941, in Lewiston, ME, to Albert James and Lorene Eleanor (Shinall) Jenkins.

Linda’s father was in management with the J. C. Penney Co.&nbsp; He was transferred many times with the company.&nbsp; During Linda’s childhood, the family lived in Lewiston, ME, Rochester, NY, Burlington, VT, Danville, IL, Omaha, NE, Brookfield, MO, and Hutchinson. This is probably when Linda acquired the love of travel.

Linda graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1959.&nbsp; She attended Hutchinson Community College for one year, then married Edward (Eddie) McQueen in 1960.&nbsp; They had two sons, Jeffery Scott in 1961, and Michael Bryon in 1963.&nbsp; Linda, Ed, and the boys spent two years in Vinita, OK, from 1968-1970, where Ed was a Ben Franklin store manager/owner.&nbsp; The family then returned to Hutchinson, where they resided for the rest of Linda’s life.

In 1975, after the boys were older, Linda earned an associates degree from Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp; In 1978, she commuted to Sterling College, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.&nbsp; From 1979 until 1982, Linda worked in the Basic Education Department at the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory.&nbsp; She then taught special education at Hutchinson High school, retiring in 1998.

Ed McQueen, her husband of 42 years, died suddenly in 2002.&nbsp; Linda spent the next several years traveling to Europe, South American and Israel.&nbsp; She participated in several short-term mission trips to Nagaland, India, The Dominican Republic, Peru, Chile, Mexico, and New York City.

In 2008, she married the Reverend Dr. Gordon Rhodes.&nbsp; Together, they traveled, enjoyed family and friends, and shared in eight interim pastorate ministries in churches throughout Kansas.

Linda is survived by:&nbsp; her husband, Gordon; sons, Jeff McQueen (Betsy) of Kansas City, MO, Mike McQueen (Terri) of Hutchinson; brother, Buzz Jenkins of McKinney, TX; and four delightful grandchildren, who filled her life with fun and love, Brett, Erin, Max, and Lillie.

Agnes Marie Marcotte, 92, of Hutchinson, died October 17, 2022, at Hospice House. She was born January 14, 1930, in St. Joseph, KS, to Ronald J. and Laura M. (Ouellette) Arpin.

Marie attended school in Clyde, KS. She worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Kress, Duckwalls, and Ben Franklin. Marie loved fishing and camping and doing crafts and taught toll painting at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center. She was a member of Women of the Moose Hutchinson Chapter #1371 and St. Teresa Catholic Church, where she was in the Altar Society.

On June 24, 1947, Marie married Lee Marcotte, in Clyde. He died December 14, 2006.

She is survived by: her children, Dennis Marcotte, Myron Marcotte (Connie), Tina Ediger (David); brother, Jerry Arpin (Carolyn), all of Hutchinson; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.

Marie was preceded in death by: her mother, Laura Ericson; father, Ronald Arpin; sister, JoAnn Simpson; brothers, Gene and Bob Arpin; granddaughter, Lisa Marcotte; and nephew, Greg Arpin.

Dea was a machinist at Eaton Corporation, retiring with many years of service.

On July 14, 1984, she married Clint Eric Harden, in Nickerson, KS.&nbsp; They shared over 32 years of marriage, prior to his death on January 24, 2017.

Edward K. “Ed” Bolt, 89, died October 12, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born July 14, 1933, at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson, the youngest son of Howard C. and Mary Jane (John) Bolt.

Ed graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1951, and attended Hutchinson Junior College.&nbsp; While at school in Hutchinson he was active in track, where he received many honors.&nbsp; Also while at Juco, Ed started dating the love of his life Janice Darlene Hornish.&nbsp; Ed was drafted into the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict in 1953 where he served 2 years. In 1954 Ed married Janice D. Hornish at Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. They were married for 68 years.&nbsp;

Ed graduated from Pittsburg State College in 1957 and entered into employment in Borger, Texas. He served in various areas of the company for over 35 years, most of them being in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and retiring in 1992 as a Regulatory Specialist in the Gas Marketing Division of the Natural Gas Department in Houston, Texas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After retirement Ed and Jan returned to Hutchinson and enjoyed old and new friends and the Trinity Methodist Church again. Ed loved traveling in their motorhome and seeing the USA. Along with travel he especially had fun playing golf, fishing, and having great times with his boys and their families. When their motor home days were over they loved Friday nights with an Anchor Inn group of friends for many years.&nbsp;They were also big Hutch Juco Boosters and enjoyed watching the Blue Dragons perform.&nbsp; Ed also volunteered for Meals on Wheel.&nbsp; Ed was an active member of the Doers class, and enjoyed the Methodist men's meetings. Anyone with the privilege of knowing Ed Bolt was immediately fond of him.&nbsp;

After almost six months apart, Ed and Jan are now reunited in God’s loving arms.&nbsp;

Ed is survived by:&nbsp; sons, Ben Bolt (Joan) of Norton, and Rod Bolt (Barbara) of Clarks Hill, SC; daughter-in-law, Kristin Bolt of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Will Bolt (Lorle), Joe Bolt (Amanda), Todd Bolt (Hannah), Lucy Jones (Bonner), and Jay Bolt; seven great-grandsons, Tyler, Tanner, Trevor, Cooper, Sutter, and Turner Bolt, and Callaway Jones; nephew and niece, Bill “Boomer” Hornish and Cindy Ratchford, and their families; and a very special extended family, Jodi Blong (Brian), Teagen and Breckyn.

Richard "Rick" Douglas Bell passed away at his Sedgwick Kansas home on&nbsp;Monday, September 26, 2022. A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held at&nbsp;2 pm on Nov. 5, 2022 at Park City Baptist Church, 1301 E. 61st St. N. in Park City, Kansas.

Mr. Bell was born on&nbsp;October 5, 1953&nbsp;in Wichita, Kansas to Jason and Margaret Kiger. He was adopted by Lawerance O. Bell and&nbsp;Laura E. Bell in 1956. Rick married his wife Elsie M. Baxter on&nbsp;September 14, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lawerance O. Douglas and Laura Bell, sister Shirley (Daniel) Czycowski and brother Larry Bell.&nbsp;

Rick is survived by his wife Elsie Bell of Sedgwick, Ks, sister Linda (Leroy) Kirkpatric, sister-in-law Connie (Bell) Gilliam, sister Elaine Davis of Paola, Ks, sister Virginia Reinhardt of Missouri.

He has worked as an Auto technician for GMC and owned many auto shops, the last shop in Sedgwick, KS. Richard "Rick" Douglas Bell passed away at his Sedgwick Kansas home on&nbsp;Monday, September 26, 2022. A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held at&nbsp;2 pm on Nov. 5, 2022 at Park City Baptist Church, 1301 E. 61st St. N. in Park City, Kansas. Mr. Bell was born on&nbsp;October 5, 1953&nbsp;in Wichita, Kansas to Jason and Margaret Kiger. He was adopted by Lawerance O. Bell and&nbsp;Laura E. Bell in 1956. Rick married his wife Elsie M. Baxter on&nbsp;September 14, 2017.He was preceded in death by his parents Lawerance O. Douglas and Laura Bell, sister Shirley (Daniel) Czycowski and brother Larry Bell.&nbsp;Rick is survived by his wife Elsie Bell of Sedgwick, Ks, sister Linda (Leroy) Kirkpatric, sister-in-law Connie (Bell) Gilliam, sister Elaine Davis of Paola, Ks, sister Virginia Reinhardt of Missouri.He has worked as an Auto technician for GMC and owned many auto shops, the last shop in Sedgwick, KS. Franklin “Frankie” Edward Becker, 85, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, October 16, 2022, at McPherson Hospital.&nbsp; He was an electrician for KIT Manufacturing, McPherson for 30 years and then a janitor for Columbia Windows, Lindsborg for 25 years.

Frankie was born on September 24, 1937, in McPherson, KS, the son of Clifford Tobias and Marie Bernice (Jantz) Becker.&nbsp; On August 14, 1970, he was united in marriage to Esther Louise Coopple at the First Baptist Church, McPherson.&nbsp;

Frankie served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #24 and was involved with the Legion Riders.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 52 years, Louise Becker; two brothers, Lawrence Becker of Galva, KS and Freddie Becker of Halstead, KS; four sisters, Juanita Koehn of Moundridge, KS, Bertha Koehn of Moundridge, KS, Carol (Loren) Koehn of Galva, KS, and Nina (Glenn) Koehn of Oklahoma; many nieces &amp; nephews and great-nieces &amp; great-nephews; and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jimmy Becker; and two sisters, Frances Ricks and Florence Yingling.

Robert “Bobby” Harold Raux Jr.&nbsp;passed away peacefully on October 10, 2022 at the age of 70 in his hometown of Wichita, Kansas. Born to parents Robert Harold Raux Sr. and Shirley Ann (Warner) Raux on August 25, 1952, he attended Sowers Elementary, Jardine Junior High School, and was a class of 1970 graduate from Wichita South High. He went on to attend Butler County Community College and Wichita State University to pursue a degree in Psychology. He quickly found a forty-year career at Cessna Aviation Company where he met the love of his life, Cindy Lou (Geisdorf). He started in the warehouse, climbing his way up to Parts Distribution Manager, finally retiring in 2012. Known for his kindness and twisted sense of humor, he was admired and loved by many in the industry.

Bobby loved his family deeply and cherished good music and harmonizing vocals. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh; a good joke was currency. &nbsp;A lover of all things sports, he rarely missed a Royals baseball game or Chiefs football game and was often found cursing with his dad on the phone about the Shockers. He was also an admirer and supporter of the arts.

He supported his family throughout the years, always taking time to listen and give fatherly advice. He encouraged his children to make the lives they wanted and dreamed of for themselves and never missed a special event.

Bob is preceded in death by his beloved mother and brother Willard Raux.

Homer Eugene “Gene” Copeland, a native Texan, veteran of World War II and the Korean War, co-founder of underground storage, junk dealer, hardware store proprietor, museum curator and Yellow Dog Democrat, died on Oct. 17, 2022. He was 96 years old.

Gene was born at home on May 7, 1926, in Alder Branch, Anderson County, Texas, to Albert Allen Copeland and Lockey Belle (Marr) Copeland. He was the third of eight children.

In conversations several years before his death, Gene recounted some boyhood memories. During the Depression, the family lived on a farm located on the outskirts of Palestine, Texas. They ate what they grew. “One of our favorite dishes was egg noodles cooked in tomato sauce” made from tomatoes his mother canned. “We ate very little meat, just a little pork or a little chicken. Hogs were killed in the winter and sugar cured, smoke seasoned and salted so it could be eaten in the months ahead. My dad would say, ‘When the bacon got so rancid you couldn’t eat it, it was time to plant cotton.’ ”

Growing up on a farm, Gene learned a multitude of skills that would serve him throughout his life. He helped his dad in the field, worked with livestock and milked cows (his least favorite chore). With his mother, he helped raise turkeys and cultivate tomatoes, with proceeds from the sales used to pay doctor bills and other debts. As a kid, Gene most enjoyed what he called “riding the go-devil.” It was a little sled pulled by two mules that would help disk the dirt around the base of the plants.

Toward the end of high school, Gene moved to Palestine, where he worked at a small grocery store. He would arrive at the store before 7 a.m. to receive the bread delivery, then attend vocational-agriculture classes at school. He graduated from Palestine High School on June 2, 1944. On Aug.1 of the same year, he got a letter that said: “Greetings from the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt.” He had been drafted for World War II.

On Aug. 28, 1944, Gene began his military life. The Army Air Corps took him to Amarillo, Texas, for basic training and airplane-mechanics school. Upon completion, he shipped out to Gulfport, Miss., where he worked on B-29s on a production line. “I did the same job every day, all day: changed the No. 3 spark plugs in engines. It was very monotonous.”

Gene left Gulfport in September 1945. Even though the war was over in Europe and Japan, the country still needed troops. Gene reupped in the service and was sent to Kearns, Utah, where he got his first clue of what was to come. “I drew all winter clothes: parkas, winter boots, thick blankets.” His squadron was loaded onto an old excursion boat in Seattle, the David W. Branch. “The next morning, I woke up and was so sick I couldn’t hold my head up,” he said. After 21 days, he landed in Shemya, a small island in the chain of Aleutians far off the coast of Alaska. There, he lived in a Quonset hut embedded in the snow. He was initially assigned to work on airplanes, but his ability as a jack-of-all-trades took him all over the island. He was the squadron barber and movie projectionist; he was given a motor pool with a few trucks to look after; he distributed both the beer and liquor rations and occasionally cans of Campbell’s soup, coffee, crackers and cheese to get the men through wiliwaw storms that could last up to 10 days. “I did a little of everything,” he said. “We all went up there as PFCs, and me and a few others made sergeant within nine months.”

Gene’s enlistment ended on Oct. 30, 1946, and he returned to Palestine. There, he heard about oilman Sid Richardson’s plans to build a gasoline plant outside of Kermit, Texas, and applied for a job. When he was hired, his boss was Gaines “Smokey” Billue. In Odessa and Kermit, Gene was assigned to maintain instruments on oil wells across the Permian Basin, taking readings and changing charts on 300 different wells. “I liked the job – the idea that I was working and finally independent. Jobs were very scarce then.”

Gene worked for the Sid Richardson Co. until 1950, when he was called back into service as part of the Air Force Reserves. This stint would take him to Shreveport, La., where he was put on B-29 maintenance and also worked on RB-35s, small reconnaissance bombers. “Every casual plane that came in, I’d work on too—a B-36, an XC-99,” he said.

His stint was up on Oct. 30, 1951. “I went back to Kermit to get my job back, and I found out they had fired me [because] they were all mad at Billue!” The irascible Smokey had quit Sid Richardson to pursue his vision for “underground storage,” in which salt is dissolved deep in the earth to create caverns to store petroleum products. In the spring of 1952, Billue dispatched Gene to McPherson, Kan., to develop a method for creating caverns and storing fuels. “I worked in McPherson for three summers—’52, ’53 and ’55,” he said. During that time, Gene lived at the Warren Hotel and ate all his meals for less than $5 a day.

In 1954, Gene and Smokey Billue went to Gallup, N.M., to drill an experimental storage well underground in shale (instead of salt) El Paso Natural. In Gallup, Gene met Betty (nee Carey), the woman who would become his wife.&nbsp; “She was working at the El Rancho, where we were staying,” he recalled. “One of the drillers I knew said, ‘I know a gal you might like.’ So we went out. I was in Gallup a couple of three months until the weather turned cold.” When he returned to Palestine, Gene asked his sister to help him pick out an engagement ring, which was then mailed to Betty in New Mexico. Happily, Betty said yes.

Meanwhile, Gene went back to work for Billue in Tishomingo, Okla. “I told Billue I was getting married, and he told me not to. I insisted, and he took me to the Wichita Falls airport and handed me a ticket—which was my paycheck. I found out before I got on the plane that the ticket was absolutely worthless, so I had to buy my own plane ticket to Albuquerque and only had $16 left in my pocket. When I got to the train depot in Albuquerque for a ride to Gallup it was full. So I went around the gate through an opening in the fence. I didn’t get caught until toward the end of the trip, when the conductor asked me for my ticket. I said I only had $16 and he said that would do. When I got to Gallup, Betty said, ‘I’m sure glad you got here, because I was going to get married tonight—even if I had to marry the best man.’ ”

Gene and Betty were married in Clovis, N.M., and honeymooned at a motel owned by the same people who owned the El Rancho, where Betty had worked. “We got the bridal suite and a big bowl of fruit.” Shortly after, they moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where Gene helped build a gasoline plant, earning $200 a month—“that’s all Billue was paying me.” In May 1956, Gene and Betty moved full-time to McPherson so he could work full time on underground storage. “Betty didn’t want to come at first,” he said.

In 1963, Gene quit his job with Billue and went to work for NCRA as a consultant at $1,000 a month. “We put in four wells, two big brine ponds, a whole bunch of pipeline and a whole bunch of manifolds. It took about six months.” After that, he was bored. “I’d sit in the office all day, every day—just sitting in case something went wrong.”

About this time, a friend persuaded Gene to buy Casebeer Company Inc., a salvage yard owned by John Casebeer. Gene renamed the business Copeland Supply, mainly bidding on oilfield salvage – taking pipe, breaking down oil derricks and hauling scrap metal that could be resold as a commodity. Gene also bought and salvaged metal from an Atlas missile base.

Larry Brickey, who was Betty’s son from a previous marriage, lived in Arizona but had been a part of the Copeland home life as well. Larry’s son, also named Larry, lived with Gene and Betty when he was in high school. Likewise, Karan’s son, Alex, lived with his grandparents for most of his formative years.Family was tightly woven into Gene’s civic life. He was a Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church, board member of the local YMCA, and deeply involved in Boy Scouts, Webelos and DeMolay, a youth organization of the Masons and Eastern Star. A longtime Shriner, Gene appeared in countless May Day parades decked out in his fez driving a miniature Model T car.As a member of McPherson’s Chamber of Commerce, Gene took about 40 trips with other men in the group to major U.S. cities. Over the years, he was honored three times: once as Man of the Year, once as Key Man, and most recently as the chamber’s Traveling Ambassador.Particularly close to his heart was the Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg, Kan. As a board member, Gene helped with the museum’s finances, acquisitions and long-term growth. His key contribution was in the form of a steam locomotive (purchased for $1) that was painstakingly moved from Hutchinson, Kan., and reassembled in Lindsborg over the course of seven years. It now sits next to the train depot on the Old Mill grounds.After about 15 years in business, Betty liquidated B&amp;G Hardware. She died in 1994 at age 62 after an 11-year battle with breast cancer. In 2001, when Gene turned 75, he sold Copeland Supply and took on a new career: owner-director of the Pioneer Heritage Museum on Mulberry Street. With artifacts salvaged during his junk-dealing days, Gene set up displays of early life in rural Kansas. Hundreds of wrenches were mounted on peg boards; hog oilers, ice tongs, corn grinders and cast-iron tractor seats were among the highlights. Other artifacts included a dentist’s chair, surgical instruments and a barber’s chair.Around 2005, Gene auctioned off his vast collection and sold his building to the proprietor of an auto-repair shop. But Gene held court nearby at an adjacent barn that he owned. (He moved into the barn full time in 2018.) There he hosted the Red Barn Coffee Club, where guests could enjoy hot coffee and warm peanuts while sitting in downright uncomfortable chairs.<a></a>Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and wife, as well as two sons: Larry Brickey in 2015 and Rick Copeland in 2018. Surviving are his sister, Eleanor Browder of Huntsville, Texas; his son Ron (Nancy) of Fort Worth, Texas; Karan Rumple of Wichita, Kansas; and Beth (Chuck) DeCarbo of Sunset, S.C.
