Jane’s life began on June 14, 1922, in Pilsen. She is the daughter of Adolph and Christina (Stika) Rudolph. Jane attended school at the Pilsen Elementary School. She was united in marriage to Florian “Skeeter” Makovec on August 30, 1943, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen, concelebrated by Father Emil Kapaun and Monsignor Skelnar. Skeeter and Jane lived their entire married life on their farm near Ramona.

 Jane worked as a cook at St. Luke’s Hospital and at the Marion Senior Center. Jane and Skeeter also worked as custodians at the Pilsen school. She was a faithful parishioner of Holy Family Parish. She sang in the Parish choir in Pilsen and was active in the Altar Societies in Pilsen and Marion. Jane was a member of the St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed quilting at St. Mark’s Church in Marion. 

Her greatest joy was her loving family which includes her three sons Ron Makovec of Lincolnville, Gail (Marissa) Makovec of Ramona and Allen (Louise) Makovec of Ramona; grandchildren Michael (Julie) Makovec, Jandi (Ben) Perry, Simon (Dana) Makovec, Shaina (Cody) Schafer, Caleb Makovec, Sheila(Travis) Hett, Amy Makovec, Lawton ( Hayley) Makovec, Adam Makovec, Rhett Makovec, Jody (Paul) Cope and Katelyn Reiff; 14 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.&nbsp; Jane passed away on Friday October 14, 2022, at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Skeeter, and siblings Matt Rudolph, Pete Rudolph, Elizabeth Propp, Ida Svitak, Agnes Smolik, Cecelia Svitak, Petrona Krotz and two infant sisters Mary and Clara. 

Her family will gather with friends on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen, where Rosary prayers will be offered at 7 p.m. Jane’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. at the church led by Father Max Biltz. She will be laid to rest in Pilsen Cemetery.&nbsp;

Kenneth C.E. Hammond III, 62, passed away in Hutchinson, Kansas, October 13, 2022. 

He was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Kenneth C.E. Hammond Jr. and Dorothy (Kauffman) Hammond, May 2, 1960. Kenneth enjoyed watching sports especially football and fishing was his favorite pastime. 

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy; significant other, Cathy Hardy; brother, Tracy Hammond; sisters, Mari Fee (Kelly) and Connie Frick; nieces, Halle, Olivia and Brianna Fee; nephews, Davis and Andrew Frick; uncles, Larry (Susan) Kauffman and Darrell Kauffman and many cousins and friends.

Anita Joan Cook, 81, passed away October 14, 2022, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born October 9, 1941, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Linard and Pauline Sprouse Cook. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School. She had worked for J &amp; J Drainage, retiring in 1999. Anita had attended Peniel Nazarene Church and later New Life Covenant Church. She enjoyed cake decorating, sewing, and canning.

On December 31, 1960, she married Lawrence D. Forney. They later divorced. On May 24, 1984, she married Donald Cook in Hutchinson. He passed away on February 7, 2021.

Survivors include her children, Rhonda Rodriquez, Hutchinson, Harry Forney, Hutchinson, Matt (Bobbie) Forney, Andover, and Melody Forney, Hutchinson; stepchildren, Candy Bell, Hutchinson, Jim (Christie) Cook, Hutchinson, Don Cook, Jr., Hutchinson, and April (Mike) Root, Hutchinson; sister Pamela Cook, Hutchinson; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Cook; a sister, Delores Collins; and a brother, Clinton Cook.

Leo Gordon Kindhart, 91, died October 13, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born May 11, 1931, in Oakland, IA, to Oval Lawson and Sybil Thelma (Reed) Kindhart.

Leo graduated from Oakland High School in 1949.&nbsp; He worked for Northern Natural Gas Company for over 40 years, retiring as District Manager.&nbsp; Leo enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, and dancing.&nbsp; He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

On May 13, 1950, he married Shirley Brandes. &nbsp;On July 8, 1989, Leo married Wanda M. Vantuyl, in Great Bend. They shared 21 years of marriage before her death on September 29, 2010.

Daughter of William and Kathryn (Stephenson) Sherrill, she was a lifetime resident of Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; After attending Salina schools and High School graduation, she finished her education at Marymount College in Salina.&nbsp; She worked at Salina Airport Authority, and then many years at a law office from where she retired.&nbsp; She loved helping others, yet her greatest joy and love was her family.

She married Dee Hardisty in 1954. To this union were 4 children, but two died at birth. Dee preceded her in death and had passed in 1968.

Joyce is survived by her son Kevin Hardisty and daughter Sheryl Musfelt (Ron); grandsons Jesse, Clinton, Daniel Hale; great grandkids Austin, Madison, and Mason Hale; other family and friends.

Fred Mease, 80, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center. He was born on April 7, 1942 in Nashville, to Glenn and Melissa Jane (Kimsey) Mease. Fred married Venora Jean (Lampe) Mease on April 21, 1962 in Wichita. She preceded him in death on August 24, 2016. Fred graduated from Nashville High School in 1960. He went on to attend a mechanic trade school in Omaha, Nebraska. He began his career as a mechanic at Swinson Chevrolet and then went to work at Pratt Well Service in 1966 where he retired in 2008. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and Pratt Elks. He enjoyed farming, fishing, gardening, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. Selena Fuller, 69, of Russellville went home to her Lord on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Capitol Region Medical Center. &nbsp;

She was born September 26, 1953 in Paris, Arkansas to the late Cliff and Mary Frances (Smith) Craft.&nbsp;&nbsp;Selena grew up in Charleston, AR where she graduated from high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;One day she was introduced to Earl Fuller at her family church.&nbsp;&nbsp;They fell in love and on December 23, 1971 they were married at Ursula Community Church. Over the years, Selena supported her husband’s life in ministry.&nbsp;&nbsp;They served in churches in Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and settled in Missouri in 1984.&nbsp;&nbsp;Selena and Earl are members of Green Grove Baptist Church where Earl is pastor and Selena played piano and sang.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2020, Selena retired after 31 years of service with Cole County Residential Services.&nbsp;&nbsp;In her free time, she enjoyed antiquing and doll and angel collecting. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Earl of Russellville, four children, Daniel Roy (Jeannie) of Columbia, Nathaniel Earl (Juanita) of Jefferson City, Joshua Caleb (Lisa) of Lake St. Louis and Carrie Ann of Jefferson City, four grandchildren, Danielle, Damon (Caitlin), Dustyn, and Isabella, three great grandchildren, Zoyee, Sophya and Brantley, and two sisters, Sherry Ann (Rick) Ballentine of Russellville, AR and Serena Eileen (David) May of Cedar Creek, Mo. &nbsp;

 She was born July 28, 1934 in Lost Springs to Edgar and Mary (Smith) Peterson.  She married Gordon Ingram June 26, 1954 in Marion. 

 Survivors include: daughters, Adella Katz of Lost Springs, Connie (Lawrence) Jenkins of Hillsboro; brother, John (Kay) Peterson of Edwardsville; 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  Predeceased by: husband, Gordon Ingram in 1985; daughter, Debra Rogers in 1992; sister, Betty Busey in 1985; brother, Bud Peterson.

Jack Lloyd Mace, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born November 26, 1944, in Sterling, to Lloyd Valentine and Violet Sophia (Wibbeler) Mace.

Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962. He then attended Bethel College, and Mennonite Biblical Seminary earning his master’s degree. Jack worked as a draftsman, photographer, and several construction companies. However, his favorite job was being a substitute teacher for local school districts.

Jack was an artist, he enjoyed making paintings, drawings, and woodwork. His biggest passion was helping people, especially those facing adversity. Jack helped start Interfaith Housing and Community Services, in Hutchinson, and with special education classes at Hutchinson High School. Jack was a loving husband, father and a very active member of First Mennonite Church, in Hutchinson.

On June 14, 1964, he married the love of his life, Deanna Klaassen at Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge.

Jack is survived by: his wife, Deanna Mace of Hutchinson; sons, Brandon Mace of Wichita, and Brian Mace of Arlington, TX; brothers, Eugene (Sally) Mace of Peoria, IL, and Glenn (Marilee) Mace of Sterling; sister, Wanda Hart of Norman, OK; and a sister-in-law, Andrea Mace of Junction City.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Naomi Phinney; brothers, Alvin Mace and his wife Martha, and Ron Mace. &nbsp;

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Rd, Hutchinson, with Pastor, Tonya Wenger officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the church after inurnment. Jack Lloyd Mace, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at Hospice House. He was born November 26, 1944, in Sterling, to Lloyd Valentine and Violet Sophia (Wibbeler) Mace.Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962. He then attended Bethel College, and Mennonite Biblical Seminary earning his master’s degree. Jack worked as a draftsman, photographer, and several construction companies. However, his favorite job was being a substitute teacher for local school districts.Jack was an artist, he enjoyed making paintings, drawings, and woodwork. His biggest passion was helping people, especially those facing adversity. Jack helped start Interfaith Housing and Community Services, in Hutchinson, and with special education classes at Hutchinson High School. Roland Eugene Nuss, 77, of Hutchinson, died October 12, 2022, at his home. He was born June 29, 1945, in St. Joseph, MO, to Roland B. and Henrietta L. (Gagelman) Nuss.

Roland graduated from Great Bend High School in 1963 and received his bachelors in Business from Fort Hays State University in 1967. Roland worked as a buyer for Dillons, supervisor for Kwik Shop, and in sales at Collins Bus and Cabinet Connections. He loved the mountains, his Tuesday morning coffee group, Tuesday night tennis group, watching sports of all kinds – especially K-State and Salthawk sports - with Rita, and spending time with his family most of all. Roland was a long-time devoted member of Eastwood Church of Christ where he had served as a deacon.

On June 5, 1971, Roland married Rita K. Woods, in Dodge City. She survives.

Also surviving are: his daughters, Melissa Thorne (Gavin) of Windsor, CO, Jennifer Farr (Jamie) of Junction City; and grandchildren, Grady and Kinley Thorne and Mason and Colin Farr.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2022, at Eastwood Church of Christ, 2500 N. Plum St., Hutchinson, with ministers Wayne DeWindt and Jimie-Wray Mead officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.

Cremation will follow with a private family scattering in his beloved mountains at a later date.

Fern L. Reimer, 94, passed away on October 11, 2022 at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. She was born March 1, 1928 in Halstead, the daughter of Peter M. and Justina R. (Dick) Esau. Fern was a 1946 graduate of Hutchinson High School. She was a homemaker and an active member of Buhler MB Church and Buhler EHU. She enjoyed music, whether it was playing the piano, singing in the church choir or playing the string bass in high school. Her favorite pastimes were playing table games, bowling, watching game shows and sports on TV, and keeping a daily diary. Fern helped Marvin in the family business and also did part time work and volunteering. Family was very important to her. Fern was united in marriage to Marvin L. Reimer on October 29, 1946 at Buhler. Survivors include children, Bruce (Kathy) Reimer of Shakopee, MN and Jane (Mark) Jost of Henderson, NE; 3 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Ron (Connie) Esau of Santa Cruz, CA, and Frank (Monica) Esau of San Jose, CA. Diana Marie (Bee) Francis, age 66, of Hutchinson, passed away peacefully October 10, 2022 in her home.

Diana was born October 10, 1956 in Painesville, Ohio. She worked for the Hutchinson Regional Hospital for 20 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, gardening, wood working, going to the range with her life partner Jim, reading and going out to eat at China Star.

Diana is survived by her son John Francis and his wife Carolynn Francis of Clearwater. Her daughter Emma Francis of Newton. Her brothers James Bee, Bobby Pierce, and Andy Pierce of Ohio. Her sisters Marquerite Coursen, and Shirley Johnson of Ohio. Her grandchildren Samantha Francis of Haysville; Marissa Riebel of Belle Plaine; Allison Cook of Dinwiddie, Virginia and Trista Francis of Clearwater. Lastly, her great grandchild Kitira Riebel of Belle Plaine.

Diana is preceded in death by her life partner Jim Smith, her mother Shirley Hibbard Bee Pierce Jewell, her father James Bee and her brother Franklin Pierce.

Diana did not want any formal funeral services held on her behalf.

Diana has always been the rock and support her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren needed. She was stubborn, knew what she wanted and would do anything she could to reach a goal. She will be dearly missed by all the lives she touched.

Pamela Louise Shopteese, 66, passed away October 9, 2022, surrounded by the ones who loved her most, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, after an unexpected illness. As she had been there for them at their first breath, they were there for her at her last. She was born October 8, 1956, in Pratt, to Dean Austin and Linda Louise (Krob) Tregellas.

Pamela graduated from Pratt High School in 1974, and in 1999, she earned her nursing degree. In 1981, she earned her Travel and Transportation Certificate from Parks College in Denver. She worked as a travel agent for many years. Pamela was currently working as a nurse for the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. She loved sewing, quilting, and crafts of any kind; passions she shared with her mother. Pamela enjoyed gardening, even though she would laughingly admit that she did not have a green thumb. More than anything she loved her daughters and granddaughters. Pamela and her daughters loved to go on girls’ trips to the casino and to see concerts. She was so proud of her daughters and never shy in telling others about them. Pamela loved life and never let anything get her down.

She is survived by: daughters, Nicole Shopteese, Wichita, Jessica Chadwick (Travis), Derby; granddaughters, Emily Barlow, Grace Chadwick; sisters, Arlene Swingle, Janell Ryan (Randy); and nephews, Asa Swingle, Rey Lopez, and Kyle Lopez.

Pamela was preceded in death by: her parents; and nephew, Cody Swingle.

Kenneth Fredrick Larkin, 82, of Medicine Lodge, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 5, 1940 in Wichita, to Fred and Irene (Szabo) Larkin. They lived at Deerhead until 1949, then moved to Lake City and then to Medicine Lodge in 1963. He met Frances Kahmeyer on a blind date and married her a year later on September 21, 1963. Kenny worked in the oil field as a contract oil pumper his whole adult life, and also taught his sons and one grandson this same occupation. Everyone in the family remembers how he would take Andy and Zachary with him pumping before 4th of July and they would come back covered in dirt. He was an avid fisherman and loved to spend time fishing with his family. He didn’t know a stranger. Kenny enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their activities and life endeavors. Kenny was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where he never missed a Saturday or Sunday service. Surviving are his daughter, Cynthia (Kevin) Regier of Great Bend; a son, Chris (Tricia) Larkin and daughter-in-law, Debra Larkin of Medicine Lodge; Seven Grandchildren, Andy Larkin, Kayla (Mark) Coley, Breanna Larkin, Jacob Regier, Emilie Regier, Zachary (Savannah) Larkin, and Avery Larkin; Four Great-grandchildren, Jemma, Bentley, Ace, and Lainey. Gary Ray Fischer, age 87 passed away on Oct. 10, 2022 at Hutchinson, KS. He was born on Oct. 3, 1935 in Great Bend, the son of William and Helen (Sittner) Fischer. 

 Gary graduated from Hudson High School in 1953.  He joined the Army to serve his country in the 553rd Field Battalion and 18th Artillery Group in Darmstadt, Germany from 1956-1957. He returned to be a farmer/stockman in rural Hudson. His memberships included Trinity Community Church, Hudson City Council for 30 years and Stafford County Zoning Board. On Dec. 22, 1980, he married Elaine Krankenberg at the Trinity Church in Hudson. 

 Gary is survived by his wife Elaine (Aumiller) Krankenberg-Fischer, two sons, Danny (Michelle) Krankenberg, Terry (Michele) Krankenberg; a daughter, Debra (Jerry) Miller; two sisters, Gloria Willinger and Mary Lou (Jim) Kestner; a niece and four nephews.; grandchildren, Laura Reeves, Branden (Alysha) Behrends, Amanda (Andy) Koerner, Jamie Hart, Tye (Lauren) Krankenberg, Keaton Behrends; 14 great grandchildren.  Gary was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Darwin Willinger. 

 Memorial service will be at 10:30 AM, Sat., Oct. 22, 2022 at the Trinity Community Church, Hudson, with Pastor Wade Russell presiding.  A private family inurnment will take place at a later time at the Trinity Cemetery, Hudson.&nbsp;

Thomas N. Frederick, 89, entered the presence of the Lord on October 10, 2022, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, surrounded by his family. He was born July 14, 1933, in Alden, the son of Guy “Ham” and Grace (Belden). 

Tom graduated Alden High School in 1951 and continued his education at Kansas State University. He graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1956. Tom was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, where he made many lifetime friends from across the state. 

Tom was united in marriage to Shirley (Moran) on September 30, 1956, in Sylvia. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. He joined the army in 1956 where he was active duty for six years. Tom and Shirley moved to Hielbronn, Germany for two years while serving at the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart. Upon returning from Germany, Tom worked at the Alden State Bank for over sixty-one years. Tom and Shirley built their home in Alden, raising three children, Le’Ann, Lance, and Drew. It was a family joke that Tom was a banker and ended up with all three children growing up to be custom harvesters. Love of family and being called, “Papa” was his greatest joy. Tom was a community servant, serving as the mayor of the City of Alden for 18 years. One of Tom’s great loves was nature and landscaping, so you would always see him around town trimming trees and spraying weeds. Tom was an elder and longtime song leader at the Sylvia Church of Christ. He was known as a gentle and faithful man who loved his church family dearly. 

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Grace; and brother, Terry Frederick. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Le’Ann (Michael Dolechek) of Claflin; son, Lance (Lynette) of Alden; son, Drew (Connie) of Alden; grandchildren, Dane (Kristin) of Claflin; Zachary (Brooke) of Sterling; Zayn of Alden; Kassidy of Wichita; Karly of Lyons; and great-grandchild, Grayson of Sterling. 

Funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Matt Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at the Alden Valley Cemetery with military honors. One of Tom’s great loves was nature and landscaping, so you would always see him around town trimming trees and spraying weeds. Tom was an elder and longtime song leader at the Sylvia Church of Christ. He was known as a gentle and faithful man who loved his church family dearly. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Grace; and brother, Terry Frederick. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Le’Ann (Michael Dolechek) of Claflin; son, Lance (Lynette) of Alden; son, Drew (Connie) of Alden; grandchildren, Dane (Kristin) of Claflin; Zachary (Brooke) of Sterling; Zayn of Alden; Kassidy of Wichita; Karly of Lyons; and great-grandchild, Grayson of Sterling. March 9, 1966, Jim was united in&nbsp; marriage to Penny Lin Helgeson in Galva.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on February 10, 2016.&nbsp;

two daughters, Sonya Allen (Scott) of Lawrence, and Patti Javener (Andy) of
Topeka; a brother, Tommy Hulsey (Pam) of McPherson; five grandchildren,
Danielle Cowan (Kim), Abbi Hess, Darian Hess, Avery Allen, and Katie Allen; one

Judy Schrater, 80, passed away October 10, 2022, at Brookdale Tallgrass, Wichita, KS.&nbsp; She was born September 17, 1942, in Hutchinson, to Herbert ‘Pat’ Earl Haskard and Ruth Mae (Miller) Haskard.

Judy was a 1960 graduate of Hutchinson High School.&nbsp; She graduated from Kansas State University with a Medical Technology degree in 1964.&nbsp; Judy worked as a bookkeeper for Apple Lane Animal Hospital, Hutchinson, alongside her husband, Dr. Gerald D. Schrater.&nbsp; She was a member of PEO, Tri-Delta Sorority, and Faith United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Judy participated in the Stephen Ministry Program.

She was an avid traveler, enjoying the ‘Becoming An Outdoor Woman’ retreats, participating in archaeological digs, going on snow ski trips with the girls, and bowling.&nbsp; Judy raised multiple animals, including dogs and over hundreds of miniature Sicilian donkeys and showing many at the Kansas State Fair.

On June 6, 1964, she married Dr. Gerald Dean Schrater, in Hutchinson.&nbsp; They shared over 51 years of marriage, prior to his death on December 27, 2015.

Judy is survived by: her son, Cory (Suzie) Schrater and their children, Patrick, Courtney, and Parker, all of Valley Center; and daughter, Lana Craig and her sons, Callum and Daniel, all of Portland, OR.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; husband; sister, Patricia Holmstrom; and son-in-law, Cameron Craig.

Lila attended Hutchinson High School. She then became a housewife, dedicating her life to her family.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Lila was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She enjoyed being an artist, making jewelry and leather crafts, but she mostly enjoyed picking on her husband.

On May 12, 1973, she married the love of her life, Loren Ray Toland. They shared almost 50 years of marriage. He survives.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Jovita Christine Toland.

Cremation has taken place. Per Lila’s wishes, there will be no viewing. A private family inurnment will take place at Eastside Cemetery with her brother, Manny Salas officiating.

enjoyed the Kansas City Chief’s, fishing, and his grandkids. He was a CNC
machinist for Eaton and had worked in the oil field. 

Survivors include his daughter, Stacy and husband Jason
Sisler, Hutchinson; grandchildren, Briana Vincent and significant other, Adam
Pettay and Davonte Neely, Hutchinson; sisters, Janet Ediger, Burrton and Connie
Wright, Lawrence; and his best friend, Barbara Keene, Hutchinson.

Bonnie graduated from Atlantic High School, Atlantic, Iowa, in 1937.&nbsp; On April&nbsp;4, 1944, Bonnie married Robert Donald “Rob” Krehbiel in Yakima, Washington.&nbsp; Rob died October&nbsp;15, 2010, in Hutchinson.

Bonnie is survived by four children: Kathrine (Charles) Moll, Hutchinson; Thomas (Diane) Krehbiel, Tempe, Arizona; Susan (Larry) William, Topeka; and Martha (Jay) Bogart, Springhill; five grandchildren, Rob Lyman, Peter (Jamie) Krehbiel, Kathrine Bogart (Jacob) Frese, Lindsay Krehbiel, and James Krehbiel; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Krehbiel and Genevieve Frese.&nbsp;

William Henry Winter, age 82 died October 7, 2022 in Newton Kansas, one month after his beloved wife Margaret.

William (Bill) was born in Wichita, to Roy and Alice Winter. As a child Bill was often with family helping his family with chores. He could be found tending the garden, doing yard work, sometimes at work with his father, and helping his Aunt Lettie grade school work. Bill was a middle child with an older sister Pearl and a younger sister Carol.

In High School he was involved in the Hi-Y club, a YMCA branch where he enjoyed softball and basketball. He played the euphonium in the band and took part in singing groups. Bill also enjoyed participating in theater and was active in the local Brethren Youth Group. During district Brethren Youth retreats and conferences he met Margaret Lehman from western Kansas. As seniors they took a youth bus trip to New York and Washington DC, spending much time together. Their relationship continued while attending McPherson College, leading to marriage during their senior year.

Bill graduated with a teaching degree and immediately began teaching science, which he continued until his retirement. He and Margaret began a family in 1962 and were avidly involved in all parts of raising two sons. Bill was always committed and close to his family, including watching over and taking care of his aunts, uncle and mother. Bill’s values were visible in the way he lived. He believed in working hard, getting things done, doing tasks right, sharing generously and serving others. Bill also loved being outdoors, hiking, fishing, camping and of course rockhounding during his travels with family.

Nearing his retirement from Wichita Public Schools he purchased a farm in Sumner County. Bill was an active member and volunteer with the Church of the Brethren, including helping rebuild homes after disasters and being part of disaster childcare teams. He modeled his beliefs and interests, his sons learned and adopted many of these characteristics. He was known to say that he was born in the wrong century, enjoying a wood fire, slower pace and lots of time outdoors working the land. His son Perry and wife Juli, son Roy and wife Lisa, grandsons Jesse, Brady, Dilan and granddaughter Sadie, sibling Pearl and many extended family members will continue to feel the loss of all Bill represented.

He is preceded in death by his father Roy R Winter, mother Alice Garnett Winter and sister Carol.

A Celebration of Life gathering for the family is being planned for a later time.&nbsp;

Their relationship continued while attending McPherson College, leading to marriage during their senior year.Bill graduated with a teaching degree and immediately began teaching science, which he continued until his retirement. He and Margaret began a family in 1962 and were avidly involved in all parts of raising two sons. Bill was always committed and close to his family, including watching over and taking care of his aunts, uncle and mother. Bill’s values were visible in the way he lived. He believed in working hard, getting things done, doing tasks right, sharing generously and serving others. Bill also loved being outdoors, hiking, fishing, camping and of course rockhounding during his travels with family.Nearing his retirement from Wichita Public Schools he purchased a farm in Sumner County. Bill was an active member and volunteer with the Church of the Brethren, including helping rebuild homes after disasters and being part of disaster childcare teams. He modeled his beliefs and interests, his sons learned and adopted many of these characteristics. He was known to say that he was born in the wrong century, enjoying a wood fire, slower pace and lots of time outdoors working the land. His son Perry and wife Juli, son Roy and wife Lisa, grandsons Jesse, Brady, Dilan and granddaughter Sadie, sibling Pearl and many extended family members will continue to feel the loss of all Bill represented.He is preceded in death by his father Roy R Winter, mother Alice Garnett Winter and sister Carol.A Celebration of Life gathering for the family is being planned for a later time.&nbsp;

Frieda Mae Quiring, 84, died on October 7, 2022, at her home in Newton.

She was born on December 28, 1937, in Goessel, the daughter of Cornelius (Curt) and Kathrine (Flaming) Janzen.

On June 15, 1957, Frieda was united in marriage to Don Quiring in Newton. The couple celebrated their 65th&nbsp;wedding anniversary this year.

Frieda worked various jobs throughout her working life including bank teller, clerk at Druber’s Donut Shop, and finally retiring following several years as a lab tech at Bethel Deaconess Hospital.

Frieda was a devoted member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Newton and made sure that her family faithfully attended and was active in the church as long as they lived in the home. &nbsp;She, along with her husband, volunteered in the kitchen for many years.

In her early years of marriage, Frieda enjoyed spending time with her mother and late sister-in-law, Obera Janzen, playing Scrabble and having Faspa (low-German Mennonite term for typical late afternoon lunch usually consisting of bologna, cheese and zweibach). Much of that time was spent in conversation freely flowing in and out of German and English – often in mid-sentence. &nbsp; She provided for her family by canning the produce from the bountiful family garden.&nbsp; Much of what the family ate in the winter months was grown and harvested by the family earlier that year.&nbsp; She enjoyed Pepsi and chocolate breaks with her daughter, Joni, whenever they could find the opportunity.&nbsp; She loved and appreciated her nightly phone conversations with her daughter, Kathy.&nbsp; While she was still able to travel, she greatly enjoyed trips to Columbia, MO, to spend time with her daughter Redonda and her family and to see the beautiful scenery of central Missouri.&nbsp; Throughout her married life, Frieda loved “junking” at estate and garage sales with her best friend, Linda, even as her health began to decline.

Frieda was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply missed by her husband, Don Quiring; children, Katherine Rose (Sid) Brown, Redonda (Mike) Marshall, Irene (Kevin) Lehrman, Don (Jacki) Quiring, and Joan Marie (Bill) Burns; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Arlo (Hazel) Janzen; and her best friend for over 50 years, Linda Eschelman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Curt and Katherine Janzen; brother, Clarence Janzen; and sister, Lillian Carmen.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with Kerry Rosfeld officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be at Peterson Funeral Home from 5:00-9:00 on Friday, October 14, 2022, with the family present from 6:00-7:30.
