SEDGWICK&nbsp; COUNTY —A case of measles has been confirmed in Sedgwick County&nbsp;in an unvaccinated child between the ages of 5 and 10 years old, the county health department reported on its website Wednesday.

Sedgwick County officials are working to identify the source of exposure and notify anyone who may have been exposed. The health department urged residents to review their vaccination status and consult their healthcare provider if they have symptoms.

Meanwhile, the Kansas Department of Health on Wednesday reported just two new case of measles over the past week in the state.&nbsp; The state's updated report did not include the case just announced in Sedgwick County.

Kansas has 49 cases in eight counties in the southwest part of the state as of Wednesday, including Morton Stevens, Haskell, Kiowa, Grant, Finney, Ford and Gray counties. One person remains hospitalized, according to the KDHE.

North Dakota is the 11th state in the U.S. with a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-texas-vaccines-funding-cuts-5785985d6b74024b0502f6a2fc1576e2">measles outbreak</a>, logging its first cases since 2011.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's confirmed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-mmr-vaccine-texas-rfk-ff8e744b19ead87698d7217de02814ee">measles case</a>&nbsp;count is 935, more than triple the amount seen in all of 2024. The three-month outbreak in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.datawrapper.de/_/sxSwi/?v=7">Texas</a>&nbsp;accounts for the vast majority of cases, with 702 confirmed as of Tuesday. The outbreak has also spread to New Mexico, Oklahoma and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.datawrapper.de/_/aP4Au/?v=3">Kansas.</a>

What do you need to know about the MMR vaccine?

The best way to avoid measles is to get the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccine-safety/vaccines/mmr.html">measles, mumps and rubella</a>&nbsp;vaccine. The first shot is recommended for children between 12 and 15 months old and the second between 4 and 6 years old.

Getting another MMR shot is harmless if there are concerns about waning immunity, the CDC says. People who have documentation of receiving a live measles vaccine in the 1960s don’t need to be revaccinated, but people who were immunized before 1968 with an ineffective measles vaccine made from “killed” virus should be revaccinated with at least one dose, the agency said.

People who have documentation that they had measles are immune and those born before 1957 generally don’t need the shots because most children back then had measles and now have “presumptive immunity.”

In communities with high vaccination rates — above 95% — diseases like measles have a harder time spreading through communities. This is called “herd immunity.”

But childhood vaccination rates have declined nationwide since the pandemic and more parents are claiming religious or personal conscience waivers to exempt their kids from required shots. The U.S. saw&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-cdc-outbreak-chicago-mmr-vaccine-7ecdfef41e6dbd659c7ac8b80d5de38f">a rise in measles cases in 2024</a>, including an outbreak in Chicago that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-chicago-migrant-shelter-cdc-e58517c830f73e42266d45d45983c12b">sickened more than 60.</a>

Measles first infects the respiratory tract, then spreads throughout the body, causing a high fever, runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes and a rash.

The rash generally appears three to five days after the first symptoms, beginning as flat red spots on the face and then spreading downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs and feet. When the rash appears, the fever may spike over 104 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the CDC.

Most kids will recover from measles, but infection can lead to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/measles/signs-symptoms/index.html">dangerous complications</a>&nbsp;such as pneumonia, blindness, brain swelling and death.

There’s no specific treatment for measles, so doctors generally try to alleviate symptoms, prevent complications and keep patients comfortable.

The City of Hutchinson has provided some updates on projects that are in process. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Public Works Director Cecil Weible tells us that the 30 Avenue reconstruction project is in the pavement restoration phase. &nbsp;They have had some weather-related delays due to recent rainfall. &nbsp;‘&nbsp;

Procon Construction has completed the installation of a new curb and gutter and has poured the east bound lane of 30 Avenue. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Left remaining is the pouring of the westbound lane and completion of new pavement at the 30 Avenue and Adams Street Interview. &nbsp;

The project is trending for a late May completion with the roadway opening to traffic. &nbsp;

Weible tells us that the project is trending on schedule for Kansas Concrete’s goal of opening in late fall of this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Their subcontractor continues to make process on pavement removal and excavation of the existing trumpet ramp at Avenue A. The Avenue A bridge has been demolished, and removal of the debris is ongoing. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Next up is removal of the Avenue A pavement between Adams Street and Madison Street and continued excavation of Woodie Seat southward to Avenue B. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Weible tells us that the design of the water basin is scheduled to be completed this month with an anticipated presentation to the City Council in June or July.&nbsp;

The construction of the detention basin will begin sometime following the completion of the necessary work. &nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Kansas State Fair is once again putting the spotlight on its most passionate fans, opening up applications for its 2025 Social Media Ambassador Program. The fair will accept applications through May 16

Chosen ambassadors will be tasked with representing the fair across their social media platforms from June through August. State Fair seeks Social Media Ambassadors

In a lengthy city council meeting on Tuesday evening the council paved the way for two new apartment projects in the city. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The first project, Hutchinson Park LP, the council approved $7.582 million in Industrial Revenue Bonds for a proposed 48-unit housing complex located just south of the Atrium Site at 11th and Lorraine. The request includes a 10-year property tax exemption. As part of the agreement,  the developer will pay a $250 per unit fee to the city in exchange for the exemption. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In another matter the council approved the reduction in building fees and water tapping fees for the project. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The second project, Plaza Trails project, would bring 36 new housing units to a site near the Dillons store on 30th Street. The council approved $10.9 million in IRBs, also with a 10-year property tax abatement. Like the Hutchinson Park project the developer will pay a $250 per unit fee to the city in exchange for the exemption &nbsp;

The council approved the $40,000 reduction in city fees, which would lower the total from $48,053 to about $8,503.&nbsp;

The city council also approved the CID for the UpTown Hutch Mall. The CID is approved with the condition that certain benchmarks be reached by the mall owners. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The council also heard from city staff concerning 10 properties that are considered unsafe and hazardous. &nbsp;The council approved and set a hearing date for June 17 to continue forward with the process to declare the properties unsafe and hazardous. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The next meeting of the Hutchinson City Council is set for May 20.

Agritourism has become an increasingly popular area of expertise, especially for those in the Midwest and Kansas. The new certificate consists of 15 credit hours and prepares students with the necessary skills to lead and manage businesses in agriculturally based tourism operations.

"The agritourism certificate is a vital asset for Kansas and the greater Midwest, equipping students with the skills to strengthen rural economies through sustainable, tourism-based agricultural ventures," said Kevin R. Roberts, interim department head and professor of hospitality management. "Bridging agriculture, hospitality, economics and entrepreneurship supports regional development and diversifies income for families and rural communities. We see this certificate helping to empower community leaders to innovate and elevate the role of Kansas and the Midwest in the growing agritourism industry."

Salt City Racing is gearing up for its second event of the 2025 season as the “Murphy Tractor and Equipment Thunder Through the Plains” rolls into the historic Kansas State Fairgrounds this Friday night. With a strong showing expected from both late model and sprint car drivers, excitement is building across central Kansas and beyond.

“We fought the weather all week, but we pulled it off,” Phil Nightingale of Salt City Racing said in a BW Morning Show Interview of the BNB Hydraulics Kids Night opener. “The track was perfect—no water trucks needed thanks to all the rain we’d had since October. I think that’s a world record for a dirt track.”

The April 25 event saw 39 modifieds and 17 sprint cars from across the region, including Missouri, Oklahoma, and throughout Kansas. The night featured strong community support, including equipment displays from local sponsors and a large turnout for the kid-focused festivities.

Nightingale credited the help of Casey Jo Gimmel for coordinating Kids Night, calling it “a great experience for families.” Kids had the chance to meet drivers, explore race cars, and enjoy giveaways from partners like Pizza Ranch, which hosts weekly Tuesday Kids Nights that include free meals and race ticket handouts.

Looking ahead to this Friday, the “Thunder Through the Plains” will feature the United Rebel Sprint Series (URSS) 305 sprint cars alongside high-powered late model stock cars. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30, and racing starts at 7.

“These late models have monster motors and 14-inch wide tires,” Nightingale said. “They’re a blast to watch, and we’re expecting about 25 late models and 25 sprint cars. That would be a huge night for us.”

The return to the half-mile oval—made possible through a new three-year contract—has generated widespread enthusiasm from fans, racers, and sponsors alike. Nightingale noted a surge in support, including new partners like BNB Hydraulics, Superior Boiler, RCB Bank, Salt City Brewery, and Donna’s Pool and Patio, which donated a hot tub for raffle to support the race purse.

Salt City Racing’s season continues on May 23 with the IMCA season opener featuring stock cars, modifieds, and hobby stock classes, followed by the ASCS National Sprint Car Tour on May 30. That race will showcase 360-cubic-inch sprint cars in a national series making its debut at the track.

BUHLER, Kan. - A parent driven petition drive has been started in the Buhler School District. &nbsp;According to a Facebook post, two of the districts band directors are leaving at the end of the year, and only one of those positions will be replaced.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The petition goes on to say, “The Buhler Band program is known for its tradition of excellence—not just in performance, but in building leadership, discipline, and community among students. Reducing staff undermines that legacy and sends a message that our students’ experiences in the arts are not a priority.” &nbsp;

The parents want the district administration and board to continue to keep the Buhler Band&nbsp;program fully staffed to, “preserve the quality and opportunities it offers”. &nbsp;

Cindy Couchman, the Superintendent of Schools said that she called a meeting with the band parents to seek input from them on the possibility of decreasing band staff from four instructors to three due to declining enrollment.&nbsp;

Couchman went on to say that there are no band program changes being made.&nbsp;

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the cafeteria at Buhler High School.&nbsp;

Buhler Band parents start petition drive to save staffing

TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly announced on Monday that she has sent a letter to the Kansas Congressional Delegation, requesting they protect Kansans from the looming federal Medicaid cuts that threaten quality, affordable health care access for the most vulnerable Kansans. Under the latest plan proposed by Congress, Kansas’ Medicaid program could lose up to $1 billion in federal funding within the first year alone.

“Significant cuts to the Medicaid program will directly affect Kansans across the state, regardless of their political views. These cuts would be particularly detrimental to our rural hospitals and providers,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “We must stand up against these changes to ensure the hundreds of thousands of Kansans covered under Medicaid can continue to receive quality, affordable care.” 

The state's Medicaid program covers more than 443,000 vulnerable Kansans, including low-income seniors, children, pregnant mothers, and individuals with disabilities. The suggested reductions in federal funding put these Kansans at risk of losing their health care coverage. Additionally, the 64% of Kansas rural hospitals already at risk of closing will be further financially strained under these cuts due to an increase in uncompensated care costs and lower reimbursement rates.

Kansas is one of ten states that has not expanded Medicaid, which has subjected the state’s hospitals and providers to high levels of charity care expenses for the uninsured. Governor Kelly has consistently introduced proposals to expand Medicaid every year of her administration, but due to the Legislature’s inaction on this issue, over $7 billion in federal funding has been left behind in Washington D.C., dollars that should have been injected into the state’s healthcare ecosystem and economy. Since Kansas is already operating with reduced resources and limited federal funding, billion-dollar cuts proposed at the federal level would further destabilize the state's health care system.

By restricting access to care, the reduction in federal funding will weaken Kansas’ health care workforce, jeopardize the health of Kansans, and worsen financial instability. Governor Kelly urges federal and state leaders to work together to stop these cuts and build upon the progress made thus far by continuing to invest in the state’s health care system.

Governor Kelly Calls on federal leaders to protect Medicaid

Candidate Doug Billings wants to implement DOGE framework in Topeka

TOPEKA — Conservative podcaster and MAGA enthusiast Doug Billings is the lone person to formally file as a candidate for the Kansas Republican Party’s nomination for governor in 2026.

Billings, not a household name in Kansas politics, said in an interview Monday that he was a reluctant candidate in a GOP field that could grow substantially as Secretary of State Scott Schwab, Senate President Ty Masterson, state Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, former Gov. Jeff Colyer, former Johnson County Commissioner Charlotte O’Hara and others make decisions to join the ballot or stay on the sideline. No Democrat has officially entered the race.

“The truth is, honest to God, I don’t want to run,” Billings said. “We need a strong conservative governor in that office. We need a politician who’s going to tell the truth.”

Billings, who worked in human resources before starting “The Right Side” podcast five years ago in Olathe, said he would implement at the state level the federal DOGE framework embraced by President Donald Trump and adviser Elon Musk. He said the state’s economy would flourish by cutting unnecessary spending and by diminishing income and businesses taxes, including the potentially unconstitutional property tax.

“Through the Kansas Department of Government Efficiency, I will root out fraud, waste and bureaucracy across state agencies,” he said.

Targets of his budget ax would include administrative costs in public schools, fraud in poverty and unemployment benefit programs, transportation project cost overruns, ill-advised economic development incentives and operational inefficiency in prisons. He vowed to scan state agencies large and small for waste.

Billings said his Catholic values required that he provide leadership in the movement to curtail abortion rights in Kansas. He would expand the state’s support for anti-abortion pregnancy resource centers and faith-based adoption agencies as well as enact policies reflecting a “shared commitment to the dignity of every human life.” At minimum, he said, the state ought to enact and enforce a law forbidding abortion after detection of a fetal heartbeat.

The Kansas Supreme Court declared a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy a fundamental right anchored in the Bill of Rights of the Kansas Constitution. In 2022, voters in Kansas rejected a proposed constitutional amendment that would have nullified the state Supreme Court’s opinion on abortion. Abortion remains legal in Kansas despite the U.S. Supreme Court decision striking the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

Billings said he would strive as governor to restore Christian values that inspired the nation’s Founding Fathers and to breath new life into founding documents written by those men. Diversity, equity and inclusion programs or “woke” agendas in K-12 schools would be eliminated to avoid advocacy for “divisive ideologies,” Billings said. The state should invest tax dollars in ways that supported decisions of parents to send their children to public, private or home schools, he said.

In terms of election security, Billings said he would order the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to launch inquiries into past election “irregularities” and decisions that undercut election fraud investigations.

Secretary of State Schwab, who said he would run for the GOP nomination for governor, has repeatedly contended Kansas elections were fair and accurate. However, Billings said “anyone telling you that we don’t have election integrity issues in Kansas is either vastly uninformed or is lying to you.”

“I will work to eliminate electronic voting machines, which are vulnerable to manipulation and erode public confidence,” Billings said. “In their place, I will implement watermarked paper ballots.”

In January, Schwab was the first Republican to confirm plans to seek the August 2026 nomination for governor. He was elected the state’s top election official in 2018 and won reelection in 2022. He served 14 years in the Kansas House representing an Olathe district. In March, Schwab said he had been diagnosed with cancer in the lung. He said the cancer was detected at an early stage and surgery would be relied on to combat the health threat.

Schwab said his campaign would concentrate on necessity of the state to bring property assessments and taxation under control. He expressed alarm the 2025 Legislature did little to moderate state property tax collections, despite bipartisan promises after the 2024 session to tackle the issue.

“When it came time to lead, both the governor and leadership came up short,” he said.

O’Hara, a former Johnson County Commission member and one-term Kansas House member, said in February that she would campaign for governor because it was time to have a “true, proven conservative” leading the Republican supermajority in the Legislature. She vowed to deal with wasteful state spending and “ludicrous corporate welfare” in the form of business subsidies, ban DEI in government institutions and “get schools back on track.”

“I cannot stand silent and watch small businesses and homeowners be destroyed through high property taxes or watch our children drown in the sewer of wokeism in our schools,” she said.

O’Hara lost a 2024 reelection campaign for county commission to a Democrat after objecting to COVID-19 restrictions and opposing vaccination mandates.

Art lovers, shoppers, and families alike will have plenty to celebrate this weekend as the Hutchinson Art Center prepares for its annual Art Fair, set for Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunflower South Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The event, held the day before Mother’s Day, promises more than 50 artist booths, live music, kids’ activities, and even a raffle featuring original works by acclaimed local artists Jack Stout and Mary Welch.

“This is such a great opportunity for people to find unique gifts—whether it’s for a loved one or themselves,” said Barbara Withrow of the Hutchinson Art Center. “We’ve got pottery, mosaics, fiber art, metalwork, jewelry, and so much more. The range of prices makes it accessible to everyone.”

Withrow, a longtime organizer of the event, noted that all 50 artist spaces have already been filled, with a waiting list for additional vendors. “It’s wonderful to see this level of enthusiasm,” she said. “We even had to turn someone away this week because we were already at capacity.”

Joining Withrow is Emily Kohls, the new Executive Director of the Hutchinson Art Center, who is already embracing the local art community after stepping into her role earlier this spring.

“I remember attending this fair back when I was a student at Hutchinson Community College,” said Kohls. “It’s amazing to now be a part of organizing such a meaningful event for the community.”

The art fair, which was once held outdoors near Main Street, moved to the fairgrounds years ago to provide a more weatherproof and accessible venue for artists and attendees. The Sunflower South Building offers ample parking and easy load-in for artists, along with space for musical performances and seating.

Three musical groups are scheduled to perform throughout the day, and children can enjoy free goodie bags—including a bit of Play-Doh, which, organizers noted, has become a hit with both kids and parents. “It’s great to see parents playing right alongside their kids,” said Withrow.

This year’s fair also highlights a special art raffle, giving attendees a chance to win original works from well-known regional artists. Raffle tickets will be available at the entrance, and winners do not need to be present to claim their prize.

Alongside the Art Fair, the Hutchinson Art Center continues to host multiple exhibitions, including Visible Voices: Art Beyond the Struggle, a mental health-themed showcase created in partnership with Milestone Clubhouse. The exhibit, which runs through May 16, includes artwork from local residents exploring mental illness and the therapeutic role of creativity.

“The stories behind the pieces are just as powerful as the works themselves,” said Kohls. “It’s important to show how art can help build mental wellness.”

Organizers hope the community will mark their calendars for Saturday’s event and take advantage of the diverse offerings. “Whether you’re looking for a last-minute Mother’s Day gift or just want to support local artists, this is the place to be,” said Withrow.

With this new equipment, Hutchinson Fire Department is better prepared to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure if the need arises. We’re truly grateful for this collaboration among agencies and industry partners.

HFD receives foam trailer 

As mailboxes across Reno County prepare for more than just letters and bills this Saturday, local letter carriers are once again rallying to “Stamp Out Hunger,” the nation’s largest single-day food drive, spearheaded by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC).

Josh Estrella, a longtime letter carrier in Hutchinson, has been participating in the drive since he joined the U.S. Postal Service in 2006. He said the local carriers are aiming to collect more than 20,000 pounds of food this year — a milestone not reached since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is something we do for the community that’s incredibly meaningful,” Estrella said. “We’ve been doing this nationally since 1993, and since then, letter carriers have collected over 1 billion pounds of food across the country.”

The effort is simple, but impactful: residents are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items near their mailboxes on Saturday, May 10. Letter carriers will collect the donations during their normal delivery routes and deliver them to the Reno County Food Bank.

“It may slow us down a bit that day, but it’s worth it,” Estrella said. “We even have retired carriers come out to help. It’s a team effort, and a community effort.”

Donations of canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, cereal and boxed meals like macaroni and cheese are especially appreciated. Residents are asked not to donate items in glass containers, as they often break during transport.

“If you’re going shopping this week, grab a few extra items,” Estrella said. “That way you’re not pulling from your pantry — and you avoid donating anything expired.”

Those who might be out of town on Saturday can set out donations earlier in the week. Plastic donation bags and reminder postcards are being delivered beginning Tuesday.

The drive also accepts monetary donations. Checks should be made out to the Reno County Food Bank and placed in a clearly labeled envelope inside the mailbox — no stamp needed. Cash donations should follow the same process.

“Every item we collect stays right here in Reno County,” Estrella said. “This is a way for every resident to give back and help local families facing food insecurity.”

Last year, Hutchinson carriers collected just over 18,800 pounds of food. Route 26 — covering the city’s west side — took home bragging rights for the most collected. Estrella said there’s a friendly rivalry among routes, with carriers even weighing their loads at the dock to keep track.

“Once the trucks start backing up and the doors open, seeing all that food pour out is such a good feeling,” Estrella said.

Processing the food is an all-hands-on-deck operation. The Reno County Food Bank sends a crew to the post office Saturday afternoon, where volunteers and carriers sort, weigh, and load items into delivery trucks for distribution.

“From kids to retirees, Scouts to church groups, it takes the whole community,” Estrella said. “We just hope folks continue that generosity this year.”

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive takes place nationwide on Saturday, May 10. Residents are encouraged to leave their donations outside early in the day to ensure pickup.
