HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeff Stroberg, who is a member of the Reno County Museum board, spoke in his personal capacity at the public input portion of the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday about the cut of the museum's allocation in the county budget to $140,000 for 2025 from $185,000.

According to Reno County Administrator Randy Partington, the allocation is the lowest for the museum since at least 2018.

Given the dearth of funds, the museum is going to try a fundraiser event for the first time. 

It will take place at the Army National Guard Armory on Nov. 16. It will be $75 and have a Wild West 1920s bootlegger mystery theater.

Admission to the museum at 100 South Walnut remains free, though donations are encouraged.

Museum with lowest allocation in several years, will hold fundraiser

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Some of the equipment is on site for the demolition of the old St. Elizabeth Hospital at 500 West 20th.

"We're starting demolition this week," said Clint Nelson with Interfaith Housing. "We still have some startup pieces that we need to need to tend to when you get security fence up and kind of get everything staged for the big project, but our contractor believes that by the end of this week, they made it start taking down the actual structure and the project itself is estimated to be six weeks start to finish."

The intent is for that to be a developable lot once the demo work is done.

"The finish on this contract is a full backfill and compaction, grading and overseeding," Nelson said. "Until we get to the point of starting a new development on that site, it will be just open green space."

The long-term goal is more affordable housing in that area.

"Our intent is to redevelop that site with home buyer units," Nelson said. "Kind of middle income, mid range home buyer units. We're going to take our time to make sure we're selecting a design and a build that's appropriate for that neighborhood. We would hope by mid 2025, that we'll have all the pieces in place and have our funding commitments in place and be able to start rebuilding on that site."

The goal is to allow two-income families to be able to afford to buy in the new development. Interfaith will also seek grant funding to help with that, as well.

St. Elizabeth demo to start this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach talked to Hutch Post at the Kansas State Fair. He's proud of the work his team has done to combat federal overreach.

"We've had a number of victories against the Biden administration," Kobach said. "I'm really pleased with our team, one of which was the Title IX case, where the Biden administration is trying to use its regulatory authority, which it doesn't have in this instance, to force colleges and high schools to allow biological males to use women's restrooms, locker rooms, showers, and a whole host of other things. And we won that case in Kansas District Court. The U.S. Department of Justice is moving on up to the Court of Appeals, and we hope to win there as well. We had another victory in a case where the Biden administration is trying to give the right to unionize to legal alien farm workers, farm workers who have H-2A visas, and we beat them in District Court on that issue as well. And then of course the student loans question, where the Biden administration is trying to forgive student loans without proper authority, we beat them in that case as well, so we're racking up some victories for the Constitution and for the people of Kansas."

The expansion of administrative action without attempts to get legislation through Congress has been a relatively recent phenomenon.

"One change occurred about 20 years ago, 15 years ago, that has really changed the role of State Attorney General, and that is that the various U.S. courts of appeals, the various circuits have opened up standing, meaning they've allowed states to come in as plaintiffs, where maybe 30 years ago they would not have allowed the state to sue," Kobach said. "That's been the biggest change. Then you have the other big change, which is the Biden administration, and before that the Obama administration, just pushing the envelope of what they try to do. You know, previously they would try to move something through Congress. Now they don't even bother. They just go straight to a regulatory agency and push a regulation that is unconstitutional and probably contrary to statute, in the case of, such as the Title IX one or the attempt to forgive student loans. That's another big change. You've got an overreaching administration, which we didn't see 20 years ago, and you've got rules of standing that allow the states to come in and challenge it."

Kobach's office is also working on another administrative strategy, called 'sue and settle', when an administration gets a friend to sue them and then settles with that friend to bypass the administrative law process.

"Kansas is right now leading an effort to stop this sue and settle arrangement where an administration has a friendly lawsuit, and then they settle it, and they achieve what they wanted by not even issuing a regulation. They just have a settlement and a lawsuit," Kobach said. "The case is called East Bay Sanctuary, and it's in the Ninth Circuit out of California. And that's exactly what happened there. The plaintiffs got a friendly settlement or in a friendly negotiation with the U.S. Department of Justice, and the state of Kansas, along with a couple of other states, were jumping in and saying, no, no, no, you don't. We want to intervene in this case and represent the people of the United States. That case is about the plaintiffs trying to basically wipe away a good immigration regulation that would make it harder for these illegal aliens to falsely claim asylum, and it would make it harder for them to come in anywhere they want along the border, and then if they get caught, say, oh, I'm here for asylum. And so anyway, it's a great regulation. We're there to defend it, and we're trying to intervene, and we're asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow us to intervene to stop this sue and settle scheme, and we should have an answer from the U.S. Supreme Court soon."

Kobach proud of teamwork in his office

NEWTON, Kan. — The City of Newton has announced a new administrative staff structure to better support economic development and advance community growth.

Newton has had tremendous success recently in new industrial recruitment, business expansions, and housing development. To manage the increasing demands, Director of Administrative Services Rebecca Likiardopoulos will head up a new Economic Development Department as the new Assistant City Manager of Economic Development.

“With so many projects and so many moving parts to coordinate, it has become increasingly clear that a dedicated economic development department will be important for driving and managing growth in our community,” City Manager Daniela Rivas said. “With her experience and knowledge, Rebecca is the right person to help grow our capacity for future development.”

Likiardopoulos has played an invaluable support role in development in recent years, leading initiatives for housing rehabilitation, state incentives and tax credits, grant projects, historic preservation, and most recently, the Choose Newton Main Street program.

In the new position, Likiardopoulos will work closely with Harvey County Economic Development on industrial recruitment and expansion, workforce development and regional initiatives. She will be integral in the City’s long-range strategic planning.

She will directly oversee the Meridian Center, Convention and Tourism/Main Street, Community Development (focused on commercial development, housing, and small business retention), and Historic Preservation.

“What I am most excited about is how this new department will bring together all of our internal and external stakeholders to facilitate conversations,” Rivas said. “Newton is at a pivotal moment, with so many growth opportunities ahead for us. We are fortunate to have Rebecca on our team, and I’m eager to support her as she transitions into this new role.”

Likiardopoulos has been with the City of Newton since 2020. Prior to that, she had over 13 years of leadership&nbsp;experience in public and nonprofit entities ranging from government to education and mental health care.

She is a Wichita native and has a master’s degree in public administration&nbsp;from the Hugo Wall School of Public Affairs at Wichita State University and a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Thomas Aquinas College.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters dealt with two calls Wednesday afternoon. The first was at 1:41 p.m.in the 700 block of East Avenue B. A structure fire was reported, but arriving crews found a haze of smoke and the smell of electrical when they entered. Crews found a set of overheated breakers. There was no fire damage.

At 4:25 p.m. Wednesday, fire crews were called out to the 300 block of East Park Street for a structure fire. Arriving crews found heavy smoke and fire showing from the back side of a single story residential home. Crews extinguished the exterior fire and then attacked inside. The fire damaged one room and the attic space, there was smoke damage throughout the home.

Three occupants were at home at the time of the fire. No one was hurt, but the three people are displaced and the investigation is ongoing.

Busy Wednesday afternoon for HFD

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Office made an arrest Wednesday morning after a chase and a short standoff.

The department says at 8 a.m. Wednesday, they attempted to stop a maroon 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe in the area of 4th and K-61 that was displaying a stolen tag out of Wichita.&nbsp;

The vehicle fled from deputies in an attempt to escape.

The vehicle exited off K-61 on to Avenue A. Deputies were authorized to perform a tactical vehicle intervention before the Tahoe got to HMS-7.

A successful TVI was executed near Avenue A and Pershing. The vehicle continued through yards, alleyways and sidewalks before crashing into a backyard of 1207 East Avenue B.&nbsp;

A short standoff ensued, as the driver refused to follow commands and threatened deputies and officers.

Chemical munitions and less lethal options were used to take the suspect into custody.

The driver was identified as 54-year-old Robbie Lee Miller of Wichita.&nbsp;

Miller was booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on drug charges and charges related to the chase.&nbsp;

The person has not been convicted of a crime and is presumed innocent until found guilty by a court of law.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Police and Reno County EMS assisted in the case.

Arrest made after chase and standoff

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2024-2025 class of the Wall of Honor at Hutchinson High School features a trio of HHS alumni. The honorees are Caitlin Doornbos, class of 2010; Geneo Grissom, class of 2010; and Heath W. Bechler, class of 1989.

Sponsored by the HHS Alumni Association and Hutchinson High School, the group will be honored during a banquet at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 3 in the HHS Career and Technical Education Academy, 800 15th&nbsp;Circle. The public is invited and encouraged to attend as we celebrate three individuals who have dedicated their lives to making Hutchinson and the world a better place.

Reservations must be made and purchased in advance for the banquet. Seats cost $15 each and can be purchased weekdays at the HHS main office, 810 East 13th, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from September 9 through October 3.

The three honorees formally will take their place on the Wall of Honor prior to the Homecoming Game at about 6:20 p.m. Friday, October 4th, at Gowan’s Stadium. For more information, call (620) 615-4100.

During his high school years, it was the bonds of friendship that left an indelible mark. He recalls the deep commitment and mutual support among his friends, especially during challenging times. These experiences seeded Heath's understanding of compassion and solidarity, qualities he later carried into his professional endeavors.

Earning a B.S. in Psychology from Kansas State University, Heath felt a calling to make a tangible difference in people's lives. This led him into the substance abuse treatment field, where he founded King's Treatment Center in 2002. His motivation was clear: to blend compassionate care with evidence-based practices, ensuring each client received holistic support.

Heath's educational journey continued with a Master's degree in Christian Ministry from Friends University and an MBA from Tabor College. These studies not only expanded his knowledge base but also deepened his understanding of leadership and service. Alongside his academic pursuits, Heath raised four sons, whom he credits for significant personal and professional growth. His children taught him invaluable lessons in empathy and genuine care for others, principles that became integral to his approach at King's Treatment Center and beyond.

Caitlin Doornbos covers the White House, Congress and foreign policy from Washington, DC for The New York Post. In 2024, she deployed to the frontlines of the Ukraine War, embedding with Ukrainian troops to report on their fierce fight against the invading Russian military. She frequently appears on televised news broadcasts and works as a regular US-based correspondent for Times Radio London in the United Kingdom. She is a member of the White House Correspondents' Association, the National Press Club, Society for Professional Journalists and the Military Reporters and Editors association.

Previously, she reported from the Pentagon for Stars and Stripes after covering the Navy’s 7th Fleet as the military newspaper's Indo-Pacific correspondent at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan for nearly four years. Prior to that, she worked as a breaking news and crime reporter for the Lawrence Journal-World in Lawrence, Kan., and Orlando Sentinel in Orlando, Fla., where she was part of the Orlando Sentinel team that placed as finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news.

Caitlin has a bachelor of science in journalism from the University of Kansas and master's degree in defense and strategic studies from the University of Texas at El Paso. She attended USD 308 schools from 1996 to 2010, when she graduated from Hutchinson High School. There, she was deeply involved in theater and was a member of the school's Saltshakers dance team. She also discovered her love of journalism at Hutchinson High School, first learning her craft in broadcast journalism classes as a part of HHS' vocational technology program.&nbsp;

Her parents remain in Hutchinson, where she visits each year to comes home for the Kansas State Fair. Her mother, Shannon Stuckert, served as an educator teaching elementary and middle school students in USD 308 for 26 years, while her father, Jerry Stuckert, retired as a math professor at Hutchinson Community College.

Geneo Grissom, the son of Eugene and Kim Grissom, started his football journey in Hutchinson. Guided by Coach Dreiling, Grissom contributed to four straight State victories. The Salthawks made a nine-year title run. After graduation, Grissom attended the University of Oklahoma, under Bob Stoops, where he showcased his skills as a defensive end. There he accompanied the team to three Big 12 Championships. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. During his time with the Patriots, Grissom contributed to the team’s defense, earning two Super Bowl rings under Coach Bill Belichick. He later had stints with the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.

Off the field, Grissom has been involved in various charitable initiatives, including youth mentoring programs. In addition to mentoring, he has participated in community events that promote fitness and well-being for children. Grissom has emphasized the importance of education and often engages in efforts to support underprivileged youth. Throughout his career, he has shown a commitment to giving back to the community. After his playing days, Grissom continued to be an advocate for health and fitness among young athletes. His involvement in philanthropic activities reflects his belief in using his platform to inspire others. 

Grissom's journey in football not only highlights his athletic achievements but also his dedication to making a positive impact off the field. Through both his sports and charitable efforts, Geneo Grissom has proven to be a well-rounded individual committed to excellence in all areas of life.

This champion’s resolve to not give up can be accredited to his father, Eugene, who told him, “If you commit your heart, you can accomplish anything.” He also attributes his success to his high school football coach, Scott Yantes, who believed in Geneo so much, that Geneo learned to believe himself.

Wall of Honor to induct three distinguished alumni

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More details were released Wednesday afternoon on the incident at the Kansas State Fairgrounds Tuesday evening. According to a release, Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a fire at the “Fry Shack”, located at 500 20th Avenue on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

They arrived on scene at 6:28 p.m. Crews arrived to find the concession trailer owned by D Dusek Concessions that appeared to have had a small explosion. The State Fire Marshal responded on scene with four agents to assist the Hutchinson Fire Department who had one truck, one fire engine, and three Staff Chiefs on scene. 

Upon conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that the cause of the incident was an overpressure of a canned food product which had been stored in the vicinity of a food warmer. The canned food item got too hot, causing the overpressure event to occur.

Reno County EMS responded to six injured people. Three declined medical assistance and one declined medical evaluation. Two were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where they were treated for lacerations and discharged that same evening.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters were sent to the Kansas State Fairgrounds Tuesday evening.

At 6:25 p.m., the Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a fire at a concession trailer&nbsp;in the south corridor of the Kansas State Fairgrounds. They arrived on scene at 6:28 p.m. Crews arrived to find a concession trailer that appeared to have had a small explosion. Two people were transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with injuries. Several others sustained minor injuries and refused treatment and transport.&nbsp;

The HFD Fire Marshal, in collaboration with State Fire Marshals,&nbsp;are currently investigating the cause of the incident. More details will be released in the coming days.

Upon conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that the cause of the incident was an overpressure of a canned food product which had been stored in the vicinity of a food warmer. The canned food item got too hot, causing the overpressure event to occur.Reno County EMS responded to six injured people. Three declined medical assistance and one declined medical evaluation. Two were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where they were treated for lacerations and discharged that same evening.Kansas State FairHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters were sent to the Kansas State Fairgrounds Tuesday evening.At 6:25 p.m., the Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a fire at a concession trailer&nbsp;in the south corridor of the Kansas State Fairgrounds. They arrived on scene at 6:28 p.m. Crews arrived to find a concession trailer that appeared to have had a small explosion. Two people were transported to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with injuries. Several others sustained minor injuries and refused treatment and transport.&nbsp;The HFD Fire Marshal, in collaboration with State Fire Marshals,&nbsp;are currently investigating the cause of the incident. TOPEKA, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly and Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed announced today that 40 local and off-system bridge projects across the state will receive a combined total of $40.25 million as part of two local bridge improvement programs capitalizing on new revenue from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).

“Kansas’ local bridges are critical to connecting communities and to economic opportunities,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “These projects increase infrastructure stability and safety across the state by enabling needed bridge maintenance, repair, and replacement.”

Combined with matching funds from the awarded cities and counties, the total project value is over $45.2 million. By reshaping the local bridge programs to take advantage of BIL, the Kansas Department of Transportation more than doubled its annual funding as part of the existing Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE).

There are more than 19,000 bridges on local road systems across Kansas. And nearly 5,000 of those bridges need updates for today’s standards.

“Local bridges play an important role in moving people and goods through our state,”&nbsp;Secretary Reed said.&nbsp;“With IKE, we have been able to increase the investment in local bridges and provide opportunities to improve these vital connections for our communities.”&nbsp;

KDOT is awarding $20.45 million through the Off-System Bridge program (OSB) in Fiscal Year 2026 to fund 21 projects across the state. About $19.8 million will be awarded by KDOT through the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program (KLBIP) in Fiscal Year 2025. The funds will go to 19 bridge replacement projects, and an additional four bridges will be permanently removed from local systems.

The OSB and KLBIP are targeted for city and county bridges in need of replacement or repair that are not on the state highway system. Funds for both programs are awarded through an application process and, in most cases, require a local contribution. KDOT uses selection criteria that include bridge condition, detour length, inability to carry legal loads, and past project history.

For this cycle of the local bridge programs, KDOT received a combined total of 170 applications requesting $162.3 million.

The Hutch Post area projects include a McPherson County bridge on Arapaho Road 3.0 miles south and 0.5 miles west of Inman for a state contribution of $950,000, a Pratt County bridge on SW 90th Street, 7.0 miles west of Coats for a state contribution of&nbsp;$600,000, and a Reno County bridge on Castleton Road, 2.0 miles south of Arlington for a state contribution of&nbsp;$1,500,000.

Local bridge funding approved

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At the request of Reno County Commissioner Don Bogner, County Planner Mark Vonachen explained the process of how floodplain maps are determined for the county after one of Bogner's constituents asked.

"The floodplain is through FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), Vonachen said. "FEMA contracts with the state, the state, in turn, contracts with various engineers throughout the region to analyze and develop the floodplain maps. As far as why they would change? Part of that would be development. When you develop in a floodplain, when you bring fill in, when you construct houses, then you're changing the floodplain dynamics out there. That's one reason why the maps can change over the time. The second reason they could really change is through better technology."

Vonachen explained that they have upgraded technology in recent decades from dot matrix maps all the way to the latest and greatest, which is Lidar technology.&nbsp;


According to <a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/lidar.html">the NOAA</a>, lidar, which stands for&nbsp;Light Detection and Ranging,&nbsp;is a&nbsp;<a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/remotesensing.html">remote sensing</a>&nbsp;method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to the Earth. These light pulses—combined with other data recorded by the airborne system — generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics.&nbsp;

A lidar instrument principally consists of a laser, a scanner, and a specialized&nbsp;<a href="https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/geodesy/gps/">GPS</a>&nbsp;receiver.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The goal, always, of floodplain maps, is to provide the best and accurate maps, where people can understand what that floodplain is," Vonachen said. "Not just based off of a computer drawing, or somebody's recollection of the area. We base it off of now, lidar, the majority of the county right now is under review for a revision to the floodplain maps. You'll recall, in 2021, we adopted new floodplain maps, mainly because of the levee certification for the city of Hutchinson. We did the Cow Creek watershed area north of town. That map was recently adopted. There is a project underway to finish the county and base it off of lidar."

Vonachen doesn't know when that will be done, as FEMA, and therefore, the downstream agencies, are behind on that work. However, once it is done, the county is obligated to approve those maps, in order to retain eligibility in the National Flood Insurance Program.

"The map needs to be adopted by the governing body, in order for citizens to be able to purchase flood insurance," Vonachen said. "Without adoption of the map, then nobody can purchase flood insurance, and existing policies that are in place, once they are up for renewal, those would expire and not be able to be renewed."

It also could have an effect on disaster funding in the case of a flood, as well. Most of the county's floodplain maps, with the exception of the portion approved in 2021, date back to around 2010, so it's time to work on them again.

A man arrested in Hays on Aug. 25 on a charge of rape and kidnapping was released on bond with an ankle monitor.

According to court records, 20-year-old Tucker James Eisenhauer was arrested and booked into the Ellis County Jail on charges of alleged rape, kidnapping, aggravated burglary and criminal deprivation of property.

According to court records,&nbsp;Eisenhauer was a Manhattan Area Technical College student.

The incident on Aug. 25 allegedly involved Eisenhauer forcing the victim into his truck, locking the doors and driving away to prevent escape, according to court records. The victim has since obtained a restraining order against Eisenhauer.

Eisenhauer was released on bond by the Ellis County District Court and placed under house arrest in Pratt County after the bond was reduced from $250,000 to $25,000.

According to court records, he is being supervised by his parents and the Pratt County Court Services Office through electronic monitoring.

Eisenhauer's next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 8.

Earlier this week, New York officials revealed a sobering statistic, according to Morning Brew, for the first time, more FDNY first responders have died from their exposure to toxins at Ground Zero (370) than were killed on the day of the attacks (343), including 28 in the past year. Union leaders are imploring Congress to extend funding for the World Trade Center Health Program, which runs out in 2028, through 2090, to ensure that every survivor is able to receive care.

The FDNY said urgency is needed before 9/11 fades from people’s memories: It soon plans to hire people born after Sept. 11, 2001.
