Quick action by the Hutchinson Fire Department prevented significant damage and injuries after an early-morning structure fire on the city’s east side Tuesday.

Fire crews were called around 12:14 a.m. to the 500 block of East C Avenue for a reported house fire. According to Battalion Chief Chad Allen, first-arriving units initially found nothing visible from the outside and entered the home to investigate.

Once inside, firefighters discovered signs of a possible working fire in the attic.

Crews opened the ceiling in the kitchen area to locate the source of smoke and found smoldering electrical wiring and insulation above the kitchen. The fire was quickly extinguished before it could spread.

Three units remained on scene to complete overhaul operations and continue the investigation.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Hutchinson Fire Department also thanked Reno County Emergency Communications, the Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County EMS, and Evergy for their assistance.
