Election filing deadline next Monday

The school year has wrapped up for my two children and summer break has officially arrived. The weeks leading up to those last days of school for my elementary-aged son and daughter were filled with tests, final projects, field trips, locker clean outs, a field day, a sixth-grade promotion and celebrations.

I imagine that after all of those busy days, as they waved to the children riding off in their school buses for the summer, my kids’ teachers collectively collapsed into their chairs exhausted. I know that’s what both of my children did when they got home following that last day of school.

But for many high school students and their teachers, that moment of rest has not happened quite yet. While the school year in the classroom has wrapped up, our rural school district, just like all of the other districts throughout the state, is still very open because of preparation for upcoming state contests in athletics and FFA.

Once our school district was dismissed for the summer, student athletes and FFA members have continued to show up daily as they’ve been preparing for their regional and state events.

I help our local FFA chapter prepare students for their state FFA events annually, and this year it is evident that a lot of students in our rural school are very engaged in many activities.

Students have come to the agriculture classroom in the mornings ready to study and prepare for their FFA contests. Following that time in the ag classroom, many will immediately go to one of their sports team practices to prep for regional and now state action.&nbsp;Some teachers carry similar schedules as well by prepping kids for state FFA and then heading out to the field to help coach an athletic event.

Yes, for many high schoolers, teachers and staff, summer break does not start for at least another week. I'm amazed at the dedication these students have by attending multiple practices daily. I’m even more impressed with the focus these kids have shown. It seems as if they are prepping for big, important high school events all at the same time right now and still showing up daily trying to give their all in every area.

As a volunteer I appreciate that these students come ready to work with me and their ag teacher daily even though their younger siblings are already in summer break mode. I also appreciate the focus these young adults bring to our prep sessions even though there are plenty of distractions around them.&nbsp;These teenagers manage their time well and maximize their output in pursuit of continued growth and success, and I wish them all the best in the coming days of multiple competitions.

And once their summer break does begin, let’s be sure to give these kids and their coaches some well-deserved and much-needed time to rest.

Salt City Splash closed Monday 

The excitement is building as Strataca gears up for its third annual Block Party, a free community celebration set for next week that promises food, live music, family activities — and a grand fireworks finale.&nbsp;

The event will run from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday May &nbsp;31, just outside the entrance to the Strataca Underground Salt Museum in Hutchinson. What began as a one-time event to commemorate the mine’s 100th anniversary has now become a yearly summer tradition drawing thousands.&nbsp;

“Last year, we welcomed almost 3,000 people,” said Rachel Terry from Strataca. “We’re hoping to see even more come out this year.”&nbsp;

The evening will include two live bands — Flatland and Annie Up — as well as a DJ to keep the energy going. In addition to the music, the event will feature food trucks, community vendors, and a dedicated kids' zone complete with bull riding and other family-friendly activities.&nbsp;

“This really is the full gamut,” said Terry. “There’s something for everyone.”&nbsp;

Although the underground tours at Strataca will be closed during the event, attendees are encouraged to return another day to explore the museum, which is the only one of its kind in North America. Standard admission is $25, with discounts available for Reno County residents. Tour lengths vary between two-and-a-half to three hours, with several add-on experiences available.&nbsp;

Strataca has expanded significantly in recent years, adding two new exhibits and preparing to unveil a new virtual reality experience this summer. The exhibit will allow visitors to step into the role of a salt miner and experience a simulated mine blast.&nbsp;

Looking ahead, Strataca is also participating in the annual Smallville Festival. On June 21, runners can take part in the popular Smallville 5K — an underground race where participants are encouraged to dress as Clark Kent or Superman. It’s one of three themed races held underground each year, including the “Luck of the Miner” 5K in March and the “Monster Dash” in October, which coincides with an underground Halloween-themed dance party known as the Monster Mash.&nbsp;

“Yes, people come down in costume and we deck the mine out with spooky decorations,” the spokesperson said. “It’s a lot of fun.”&nbsp;

Standard admission is $25, with discounts available for Reno County residents. Tour lengths vary between two-and-a-half to three hours, with several add-on experiences available.&nbsp;Strataca has expanded significantly in recent years, adding two new exhibits and preparing to unveil a new virtual reality experience this summer. The exhibit will allow visitors to step into the role of a salt miner and experience a simulated mine blast.&nbsp;Looking ahead, Strataca is also participating in the annual Smallville Festival. On June 21, runners can take part in the popular Smallville 5K — an underground race where participants are encouraged to dress as Clark Kent or Superman. It’s one of three themed races held underground each year, including the “Luck of the Miner” 5K in March and the “Monster Dash” in October, which coincides with an underground Halloween-themed dance party known as the Monster Mash.&nbsp;“Yes, people come down in costume and we deck the mine out with spooky decorations,” the spokesperson said. “It’s a lot of fun.”&nbsp;

 A detached garage fire caused significant damage and threatened a nearby residence Saturday afternoon at 728 East 6th Street, according to the Hutchinson Fire Department.

Fire crews responded swiftly at approximately 1:40 PM after receiving a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fully involved detached garage with flames dangerously close to the residence. Thanks to the quick and efficient response of the first arriving crews, the fire was contained to the garage, preventing further damage to the main structure.

The house was occupied at the time of the fire, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. While the garage suffered heavy damage, fire officials confirmed that the home remains habitable.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

As temperatures rise and residents begin dusting off their grills for summer cookouts, Hutchinson fire officials are urging the public to take precautions to prevent outdoor fires.&nbsp;

“People are pulling their charcoal and gas grills out of storage, and it’s important to make sure they’re using them safely,” Hutchinson Fire Department Fire Marshall Micharl Cain said. “One of the biggest things we tell people is to move the grill away from the house. It’s tempting to put it right outside the door for convenience, but it needs to be at least 20 to 25 feet from anything combustible.”&nbsp;

Before lighting up the grill for the first time this season, Cain&nbsp;recommends a thorough inspection — especially for gas grills. Users should check all gas lines and the propane tank for leaks or damage. Charcoal grill users should avoid placing their grills on wood decks, as dropped ashes can ignite decking material.&nbsp;

“Move it into the yard,” Cain said. “It might be a little less convenient, but it’s much safer.”&nbsp;

Once the grilling is done, ashes from charcoal grills should be completely cooled before disposal. Placing warm ashes into a poly-cart has been known to spark fires that can quickly spread to nearby structures.&nbsp;

The department also warns against leaving grills, fire pits or open flames unattended, even briefly.&nbsp;

“We’ve had cases where someone lights the grill and realizes they forgot something, then runs to the store,” Cain&nbsp;said. “That’s when problems start. Never leave any kind of fire or heat source unattended.”&nbsp;

In addition to grilling safety, fire officials are reminding residents about regulations regarding open burning in Hutchinson. Fires must be contained in fire pits no larger than three feet in diameter and two feet deep, and should be kept away from homes, sheds, fences and other combustible materials.&nbsp;

“Anything you buy from a hardware store — chimineas, commercial fire pits — those are fine,” Cain&nbsp;said. “But again, keep them away from the house, at least 20 to 25 feet, and never place them on a wooden deck or porch.”&nbsp;

Officials say the most common fire hazards arise not during the fire, but afterward, when ashes are disposed of prematurely.&nbsp;

Another key concern this summer is wind. In Kansas, gusty conditions can turn a small flame into a fast-moving fire.&nbsp;

“If the wind is blowing, just don’t burn — even recreationally,” Cain added. “It’s not worth the risk.”&nbsp;

Fire Marshall urges caution as grilling, backyard fire season heats up

The Wichita Police Department reported to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation that 67-year-old Ina Duke was located and is now safe.

&nbsp;The Wichita Police Department requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a missing Wichita woman.

The whereabouts of 67-year-old Ina Duke are unknown, and the public’s assistance is requested to help locate her. Duke is believed to be a passenger in her own vehicle, a black 2013 Hyundai Sonata bearing a Kansas disability tag 86534. Duke’s vehicle was last seen heading east on Highway 254 at 6:55 p.m. on May 24. The driver of the vehicle was reported to be a black male, unknown to Duke’s family.

Duke is a black female who is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 265 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair, and was last seen wearing a purple robe and blue jeans.

Duke has a condition that impairs her memory. If you see Ina Duke, please call 911 immediately. If you have other information about her whereabouts, call the Wichita Police Department at 316-268-4111.

KBI: Silver Alert canceled, missing Wichita woman found

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — SaltCity Racing delivered high-speed thrills Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, highlighted by a full slate of IMCA feature races and a record turnout for the annual Kids Night.

Jacye Reimer of Hutchinson claimed the win in the IMCA Stock Car A Feature, holding off fellow Hutchinson driver David Brown and Wichita’s Colten Kelly to take the checkered flag.

Randy Wilson of Wichita led the IMCA Modified feature, finishing ahead of Hutchinson’s Jake Nightingale and Casey Jo Gemmill of Goddard.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock division, Morgan Olmstead of Overton, Nebraska, took the top spot. Cody Williams of Minneapolis, Kansas, finished second, with Salina’s Garrit Caswell in third.

Salina’s Warren Huffman won the IMCA Northern Sport Mod A Feature, finishing ahead of Brian May of Spearville and Dodge City’s Joey Maupin.

Promoter Phil Nightengale said the event’s Kids Night drew a record 211 children, the highest attendance in the event’s history.

SaltCity Racing returns to the track Friday, May 31, with a special event featuring the ASCS National Sprint Car Tour and Super Stocks. Pits open at 3 p.m., gates at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m., and racing starts at 7 p.m.

Memorial Day Sale this weekend on Hutch Post Big Deals 

Hutchinson, Kan.—The United Way of Reno County, in partnership with the Reno County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), has fully launched fundraising efforts to help the Plevna and Reno County residents recover from the recent tornado—and they are asking for the community’s help to raise $250,000. 

“Due to the size and scope of this tornado, disaster funding will unfortunately not be available from state or federal sources,” said Adam Weishaar, Director of Emergency Management for Reno County.  “That means we will need to support these families and individuals through local efforts,” he added.   

Per VOAD protocols, donations made to United Way Reno County’s Plevna Disaster Fund will help to first ensure affected residents have their basic needs met (like access to food, clean water and electricity).  Following those efforts, donations will then be used to make sure that each primary residence is safe and livable.  

“We know there are a lot of avenues to support our friends who were devastated last weekend,” said Lacey Mills, UWRC CEO.  “We want to be sure that our community understands when United Way is raising funds in a disaster moment, 100% of every donation is used on recovery efforts.  United Way does not retain any portion of those funds,” she stated. 

“United Way and VOAD are committed to walking alongside these community members long-term,” Mills said.  “We know that full recovery after total devastation takes significant time.  We are here for the long haul.” 

In addition to giving directly to UWRC’s Disaster Fund, another opportunity for the community to support recovery efforts is to attend the upcoming “Party for Plevna” at Sandhills Brewing on Friday, May 30th.  

Local band, “Bluez Warning” will play from 7 pm- 9 pm, and “Whatever’s Cookin’”, a local food truck will be on-site ready for service beginning at 5 pm.  Donations raised during the event, along with a portion of sales, will be donated to the UWRC Disaster Fund.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — SaltCity Racing is gearing up for it's third race of the 2025 season with the Murphy Tractor and Equipment IMCA Season Opener at the Kansas State Fairgrounds this evening.&nbsp;

"The IMCA is the largest sanctioned bodied through the country," Phil Nightingale with SaltCity Racing said. "They have over 10,000 racers registered to race throughout the country, that's one reason why I went with that sanctioning body at the Kansas State Fairgrounds for that sole reason."

The four different IMCA classes that will be racing include IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Modified, IMCA Hobby Stock and IMCA Northern SportMod.

"The one that will probably put on the best show is what we call the A mods, they're the fastest cars we have," Nightingale said. "That's a modified car with open front wheels and about a 400 horse motor. Then we have the B mods, which is kind of just like the A mods, but it's just a little less horsepower and a little less money to make that car go. Then we have the stock car class, which looks just like a stock car and those guys put on a great show. Then we have what we call the hobby stock class, which is almost like a stock car, just take the glass out of it, put role bars in it and you've got some different rules to follow. Those hobby stock guys put on a great show, we had them one time last year and so excited to have them back for 2025."

This evening also serves as Kids Night at SaltCity Racing.

"Every kid under 12 gets in free," Nightingale said. "The first 100 kids is going to get a ton of prizes, so you want to be first in line for the first 100. We've had some great sponsors that have stepped up and paid for those kids to get in free. There will be all kinds of prizes and giveaways, we're also going to have tons of neat vehicles for kids to play on and touch. We're going to have police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, the SWAT team is going to be there, the National Guard is going to be there."&nbsp;

Riders from across Kansas will hit the road this Saturday for the fourth annual “Cruise for the Cure” poker run, a motorcycle (and road-legal vehicle) event organized to raise funds for the Cancer Council of Reno County. Hosted by Bretz Injury Law in partnership with Salty Cycles, the charity ride has grown into a community-fueled tradition drawing more than 100 participants in past years.

The event begins Saturday morning, May 24, at Salty Cycles, located at 129 E. Sherman in Hutchinson. Registration opens at 9:30 a.m., with engines revving for the start at 10:30 a.m. Riders will embark on an 87-mile route that stretches into neighboring Harvey County, stopping at four checkpoints: Buhler Gas Company in Buhler, Lighthouse Coffee in Inman, Dan’s Cycle in Hesston, and the The Barn in Burrton, before returning to Bretz Injury Law for lunch, raffles and awards.

Entry fees are $25 for one poker hand or $50 for three. The poker element of the ride includes drawing cards at each stop, with a final skill game determining the last card. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, second-best hand, and even the worst hand—a playful tradition that adds fun to the serious cause.

“This event was created to support a cause nearly everyone can relate to,” said Casey Ensz, an organizer with Bretz Injury Law. “Cancer affects almost every family, and the Cancer Council of Reno County does a tremendous job helping those who fall through the cracks of insurance and other support systems.”

Half of the entry fees go directly to the Cancer Council, which provides assistance with transportation, food and other expenses for local patients. Additional fundraising will include raffles with prizes donated by area businesses. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. A free lunch catered by Cancun Mexican Grill will be served to participants upon return.

And the event isn’t just for bikers. “If you’ve got a road-legal vehicle—even a Toyota Camry—you’re welcome to join us,” Ensz said. “It’s about raising money and awareness. The more, the merrier.”

The event marks the first poker run of the season for Bretz Injury Law, which organizes four charity rides annually, benefiting various causes including Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Ag Minute: Avian Flu leads to trade issues for Brazil 

As summer approaches, Buhler USD 313 and Hutchinson USD 308 and other schools are stepping up to ensure no child goes hungry during the break. Districts are offering free meals for all children ages 18 and under, with no applications or proof of income required—just a commitment to feeding the community.&nbsp;

Hutchinson USD 308: Grab and Go Convenience

From&nbsp;June 2 through July 25, Hutchinson USD 308 will operate its&nbsp;Summer Meal Program, offering nutritious meals through convenient&nbsp;Grab &amp; Go&nbsp;sites. Please note:&nbsp;No meals will be served on July 4.&nbsp;

Meals are available&nbsp;Monday through Friday&nbsp;at the following locations and times: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;•&nbsp; Hutchinson Middle School-7:&nbsp; 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;•&nbsp; Fairgrounds Splash Park:&nbsp; 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;•&nbsp; Hutchinson Public Library:&nbsp; 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

To receive meals from any site, families must first visit&nbsp;HMS 7 with their children&nbsp;to receive a&nbsp;Summer Meal Pass. After that, the pass allows families to pick up meals without the children present. This is the same process used last summer. &nbsp;As an added bonus,&nbsp;HMS 7 will also provide breakfast for the next day along with lunch.&nbsp;

Buhler USD 313&nbsp;begins its free summer meal program a week earlier, starting&nbsp;May 27 and running through July 31. Meals are available via a&nbsp;drive-through service&nbsp;from&nbsp;11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.&nbsp;at&nbsp;Buhler High School. This process will provide a hot lunch for the day and breakfast for the next day. &nbsp;

On the USD 309 Summer Lunch Program will start May 27th. On the first day, families must bring their children so staff can verify eligibility and issue a unique number. After that, it's a simple drive-through process—just show the number and pick up meals, no children required.&nbsp;

Districts are offering free meals for all children ages 18 and under, with no applications or proof of income required—just a commitment to feeding the community.&nbsp;<h2>Hutchinson USD 308: Grab and Go Convenience</h2>From&nbsp;June 2 through July 25, Hutchinson USD 308 will operate its&nbsp;Summer Meal Program, offering nutritious meals through convenient&nbsp;Grab &amp; Go&nbsp;sites.  </figure>To receive meals from any site, families must first visit&nbsp;HMS 7 with their children&nbsp;to receive a&nbsp;Summer Meal Pass. After that, the pass allows families to pick up meals without the children present. This is the same process used last summer. &nbsp;As an added bonus,&nbsp;HMS 7 will also provide breakfast for the next day along with lunch.&nbsp;Questions? Meals are available via a&nbsp;drive-through service&nbsp;from&nbsp;11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.&nbsp;at&nbsp;Buhler High School. This process will provide a hot lunch for the day and breakfast for the next day. &nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>On the USD 309 Summer Lunch Program will start May 27th. On the first day, families must bring their children so staff can verify eligibility and issue a unique number. After that, it's a simple drive-through process—just show the number and pick up meals, no children required.&nbsp;<h2>Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309</h2>USD 309 Summer Lunch Program will start May 27th. Open at Nickerson Elementary and South Hutchinson Elementary. Kids 1-18 can eat free.Children ages 1 through 18 can enjoy free summer meals at two convenient locations in Nickerson and South Hutchinson from May 27th through July 31st.
