As BW Radio celebrates its 90th anniversary, a familiar voice from the past returned to reflect on a storied broadcasting career that began right here in Hutchinson.

Gary Bender, a former sports director at BW Radio in 1964 and a nationally renowned sportscaster, took time to revisit the humble beginnings of a career that would eventually span decades and reach national television networks like CBS and ABC.

Bender, now retired and living in Arizona, was born in Norton, Kansas, and raised in Ulysses. The son of a coach at what was then Dodge City Junior College, Bender went on to play football at Wichita State University. An injury, however, ended his playing days and shifted his focus to broadcasting.

“It really started for me at the University of Kansas,” Bender said. “I was in graduate school, unsure of what to do, when my mentor Tom Hedrick — the voice of the Jayhawks — told me, ‘You’ve got to go for it.’ That changed everything.”

With Hedrick’s help, Bender secured his first job in Hutchinson at BW Radio. But the road to that opportunity wasn’t easy.

“I was broke, living in my aunt’s basement in Kansas City, and finishing my thesis,” Bender recalled. “Tom called and said there might be an opening in Hutchinson. I borrowed $30 from my aunt and drove down, only to be told by Fred Conger, the station owner, ‘I don’t need a sportscaster.’”

Fortunately for Bender, Conger changed his mind after learning that Bender’s wife was a teacher — and that he was also the president of the local school board.

“Just like that, I was hired,” Bender said. “It was a break I desperately needed.”

From there, Bender’s path included a stint as the voice of the Hutchinson Salt Hawks and the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons. Just a few years later, he was calling games for the University of Kansas.

In a twist of fate, Bender got the KU job after returning from basic training during the Vietnam War. A call from WIBW in Topeka led to an audition where he was ultimately hired, despite the station manager jokingly telling him otherwise at first.

“I thought I’d lost it, but then he said, ‘Nah, I’m just kidding. You’re hired,’” Bender said with a laugh. “That was a huge breakthrough for me.”

From there, Bender moved to Madison, Wisconsin, becoming the sports director for the Wisconsin Television Network and the voice of the Green Bay Packers. That opportunity eventually opened the door to national broadcasting roles with CBS, ABC and NBC, where he would cover the NFL, NCAA basketball, the Olympics and more.

“I never orchestrated any of it,” Bender said. “It just kind of happened — one door opened another.”

Today, Bender's legacy continues through his son Trey, who also works in sports broadcasting, and his granddaughter, who has entered the world of acting.

As KW Radio marks nine decades of broadcasting, Bender’s journey serves as a testament to the station’s long-standing tradition of launching successful media careers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — PrairieStar Health Center will host its second annual Summer Kick Off event on Thursday evening.

The free, public event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at PrairieStar’s facility, located at 2700 E. 30th Ave. in Hutchinson.

“It’s open to anybody, you don’t have to be a patient or anything special. Just come by and have fun with us,” Kyran Losew, PrairieStar’s director of marketing and public relations said.

Entertainment for the evening will include bounce houses, a snow cone truck, Donuts in Paradise, cotton candy, a free hot dog meal and a variety of yard games.

“Just come hang out with us for an evening,” Losew said. “We want to kick off the summer with you and just have a good time.”

PrairieStar providers and staff will also be in attendance.

“If you want to mingle, learn more about PrairieStar, or get to know some of the providers, this is a great opportunity,” Losew said. “We’ll have a table where you can stop by and ask questions, or just enjoy the evening.”

PrairieStar hosting Summer Kick Off Bash Thursday

CHENEY LAKE, Kan.&nbsp; — Recent rainfall has brought a modest but welcome rise to Cheney Lake, a critical water reservoir in south-central Kansas. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, the lake’s water level stood at 1,414.94 feet, up nearly half a foot since Wednesday morning. That marks an improvement from earlier in the week, when levels held steady at 1,414.25 feet on both Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday, the lake sat at 1,414.10 feet, and just one week ago on May 22, it measured 1,413.65 feet.

Despite the recent gains, Cheney Lake remains 6.66 feet below its normal conservation level.

Officials note that the lake is expected to continue rising as runoff from recent storms filters through the watershed. The Cheney Lake Watershed, which feeds the reservoir primarily through the North Fork Ninnescah River, spans 633,000 acres across five counties: Reno, Stafford, Pratt, Kingman, and Kiowa. Over 99% of the watershed is used for agriculture, making rainfall a key factor in both water supply and land management.

The man-made lake is also supplied by a network of smaller tributaries, including Silver Creek, Goose Creek, Wolf Creek, and Red Rock Creek, which are now helping boost inflows in response to the wet weather.

Though still far from full, the recent uptick in Cheney Lake’s level offers a hopeful sign for water managers and residents who rely on the reservoir for recreation, irrigation, and municipal water supply.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ford is recalling more than a million vehicles due to a software issue that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the chance of an accident, government auto regulators said.

The software error, which Ford reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier this month, may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze or not display when the vehicle is in reverse.

The problem will be fixed by a dealer or via an "over-the-air" update at a later date. A preliminary letter notifying owners of the safety risk is expected to be mailed June 16, with a second letter to be sent once the update is available, expected sometime in the third quarter of 2025.

The following Ford vehicles — a total of 1,075,299 — are included in the recall:

2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600

Ford to recall 1.1M Ford and Lincoln vehicles 

 A multi-day stretch of widespread precipitation from May 24 to 26 has brought much-needed drought relief to several areas across the Central Plains, leading to notable improvements in drought conditions, according to recent climate monitoring reports.

Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 3 inches across large portions of southwestern South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and northeastern Colorado, with some localized areas receiving even more. This substantial precipitation, coupled with much cooler temperatures, played a key role in recharging topsoil moisture, offering a boost to regional agriculture and ecosystems.

The latest drought analysis shows a 1-category improvement across parts of southwestern South Dakota, western and central Nebraska, and northeastern Colorado. In these areas, indicators such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at various time scales, along with soil moisture data, showed clear signs of recovery. As a result, areas classified under severe to extreme drought have seen a reduction in coverage.

Meanwhile, southeastern Colorado also experienced lighter rainfall. While totals were lower, multiple indicators including SPI, soil moisture, and the Vegetation Drought Response Index (VegDri) suggested enough improvement to remove the last remaining areas of moderate drought from the region.

However, not all areas benefited from the recent rainfall. Southern Nebraska and northern Kansas largely missed the precipitation, leading to small 1-category degradations in drought status. Western Colorado also saw conditions worsen, with 90- to 180-day SPI data supporting a 1-category downgrade due to increasing dryness over the past several months.

With the growing season underway, continued monitoring will be crucial to determine whether these improvements mark the beginning of a sustained trend or a temporary break in ongoing drought conditions.

🎧 BW Morning Show Interview: Gary Bender, Sportscaster 

 The Department of Government Efficiency has canceled four National Science Foundation grants worth more than $4.3 million that were awarded to the University of Kansas and Kansas State University, citing the programs as “wasteful DEI grants.”

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, announced the cancellations through its “savings” website, which listed terminations of three KU grants on April 25 and May 2, and one grant to K-State on May 2.

The decision is part of a larger effort by DOGE and the NSF to review and terminate what they describe as non-priority grants. In an April 18 post on X, formerly Twitter, the NSF said it was ending awards “not aligned with agency priorities” and reaffirmed its commitment to “creating opportunities for all Americans everywhere, without exclusion of any groups.”

DOGE claims the cancellations will save the federal government nearly $1.5 million, despite the total value of the grants exceeding $4.3 million. The move is part of a broader sweep that has resulted in the termination of hundreds of NSF-funded projects, many of them tied to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Two of the canceled grants — one each to KU and K-State — were part of the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation program. The LSAMP initiative aims to diversify the STEM workforce by increasing the number of underrepresented students earning degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

The KU LSAMP grant supported a partnership with Pittsburg State University, the University of Nebraska, Southeast Community College, Johnson County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College. DOGE cuts grants to KU, KSU claims $1.5M savings

 TOPEKA, Kan. – Residents affected by recent severe weather in Reno County should contact the Kansas Department of Insurance if they have an issue with an insurance claim, Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt said.  

The Department has been in contact with local authorities in Reno County and urges residents affected by the storm to contact the Department if they need assistance.   

“Severe weather in Kansas often means storm damage and insurance claims,” Commissioner Schmidt said.  “If you have any questions about your insurance coverage after the storm or have an issue with an insurance claim in the coming weeks, please contact the Department.”

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of 27th Avenue and North Main.

This property has always been a gasoline dispensing facility. The first service station was built here in 1960 and labeled as the "Larkland Champlin Service" with Max Hutchins as its manager. The first photo shows this station as Charlie's Larkland Champlin with the Deming Film Stop and Sandy's Restaurant in the background in 1968.

The management of this station changed hands many times between 1960 and 1983, with names such as Rod Holdredge, Harold Herrman, Charles Pitts, Carl Curless, Jerry Gross, Lynn Morton, Ken Collins, Carolyn Carr and Sue Lutz.

In 1983, Stanley "Shorty" Brown, owner of T&amp;E Oil Co., purchased the station and rebranded it to Fina #18. The second photo shows the station with that signage in 1986, with Washington Heights and Safeway in the background.

In 1998, the Brown family expanded their service station offerings to convenience stores and the "Pantry Plus" nameplates showed up around Hutch. The third photo shows the Pantry Plus at this location in 1998.

In 2003, the Kroger Co. purchased the Pantry Pluses from T&amp;E Oil Co. and converted them to Kwik Shops. The fourth photo shows the 2617 N. Main St. property, still owned by Kwik Shop Inc.

After more than 20 years in law enforcement and seven years at the helm of the Pratt Police Department, Chief of Police Nate Humble has officially stepped down. His resignation, submitted on Tuesday, May 27th, comes as he accepts a conditional offer for a new position with the Kansas Attorney General’s Office.

Chief Humble’s career in law enforcement has been marked by steady leadership, community engagement, and a dedication to public safety. Colleagues within the department have praised his commitment to service and professionalism throughout his tenure.

“We are grateful for Nate's 20+ years of service in law enforcement and his leadership over the past seven years as Chief,” the department said in a statement. “On behalf of everyone at the Pratt Police Department, we want to extend our thanks to Nate and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

With this vacancy Detective Joe Ohler has been appointed as Interim Chief. The City of Pratt will open the position for applicants in the near future.

The Trump Administration recently appointed David Schemm as the new State Executive Director (SED) for the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Kansas. Schemm joined the Kansas FSA team on May 5, 2025.

“When America’s farming communities prosper, the entire nation thrives. This new group of USDA appointees will ensure President Trump’s America First agenda is a reality in rural areas across the country. I am grateful for the leadership of these new state directors and look forward to their work reorienting the agency to put Farmers First again,” said Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

“FSA State Executive Directors serve in a critical role carrying out USDA’s mission at the state level — ensuring that our focus is on meeting the needs of local agricultural producers by putting farmers and ranchers first,” said FSA Administrator Bill Beam. “Rural communities need our support now more than ever. Our newly appointed state leaders bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their position as SED and they will play an integral role in shaping the future of agriculture in their state.”

Schemm returns to FSA where he previously served as the FSA State Executive Director for Kansas during President Trump’s first term. Before that, he served as Ag Advisor for U.S. Senator Roger Marshall for two years. He has a long history of involvement and leadership with the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers Board and the National Association of Wheat Growers. Schemm also served on the board for the United Sorghum Checkoff Program and served on the A-Team Innovation and Sustainability for United States Grains Council.&nbsp;

As SED, Schemm is responsible for overseeing the delivery of FSA programs to agricultural producers in Kansas. David Schemm appointed as USDA FSA Director in Kansas

Many people know about the classic children's book "The Little Engine That Could" but what about the "little station" that not only could but still can? Not many things born ninety years ago this month are still alive and kicking. A notable exception is a uniquely thriving Hutchinson AM radio station, KWBW.&nbsp;

Once housed in what is now the Reno County Museum and originally known as KWBG, then in a historic local library building at 5th and Main, followed by a long stint in the once suburbs of 17th and Harding and now in at 9th and Main, KWBW has become a local institution playing primarily to middle age and older adults. An FM component was added in 2013 to expand night-time coverage.&nbsp;

It is highly unusual for a low power radio station to survive nine decades of broadcasting and society ups and downs. Especially in recent decades many stations have sold, disappeared and changed formats.&nbsp;

Although it didn't start with a news/talk and sports format KWBW was a Kansas talk pioneer. It has become one of the communities strongest voices for local events and programs, sports and linked up with an on-line news service, Hutch Post, owned and operated by its' parent, Eagle Media out of Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

The result has been a sizeable number of local listeners who depend on the station for community information, a chance to voice their own telephone comments weekly, high school and community college sports, local personalities that have become engrained in loyal listeners for generations and linking up with popular national programing such as Clay Travis and Buck Sexton (successors to Rush Limbaugh); conservative Glen Beck and longtime coverage of Kansas City Royals baseball.&nbsp;

KWBW has maintained its success through several innovative practices. These include home-spun, so-called ad-lib commercials by station personalities and remote broadcasts where announcers visit advertisers' businesses to deliver live reports. The station was also one of the first to invite clients in to record their own commercials. Additionally, a long-running show called Party Line allows people to advertise their buy-and-sell items for free over the phone. Together, these strategies have helped KWBW overcome competition and challenges that have caused other stations to go bankrupt or fade away.

Success of the station turning ninety this year and its' ability to grow and proper while others, especially AM stations, have failed may be primarily attributed to four people.&nbsp;

The late Fred Conger bought into the station and moved from Topeka more than a half century ago. Conger was willing to experiment with BW Radios' first talk program called Coffee and Conversation. It was only 15 minutes, originating live from the downtown Baker Hotel, now Plaza Towers apartments, and it featured Conger talking about Hutchinson and with its' interesting people. Conger went on to pioneer Party Line, a daily trade and sale program made famous by Wilma "Perky" Perks. For more than a quarter-century she enticed a huge audience both with sale items and appeals for listeners to help local organizations and needy people. 

Conger also launched a sister FM station, KHUT and later ownership further expanded with KHMY-FM.&nbsp;

Without Congers' willingness to move toward a talk format when most stations were only playing music KWBW might not have made it through broadcast turbulence of the 60's and 70's. He also had the courage to be among the few, initially, to add Rush Limbaugh to BW programing. It became the nations' most popular daily radio show and Conger resisted local efforts from opponents to shut it down.&nbsp;

Another key part of the stations' success was Conger turning over ownership in 1989 to a group called Eagle Communications, headed by Hays radio and television owner Bob Schmidt and his principal operating lieutenant Gary Shorman. Schmidt and Shorman brought in needed new ideas, increased capital and challenged the station to embrace change. 

Worn out equipment was replaced, and a future vision was established. As Schmidt readied for retirement, he put all his stations and cable operations into an employee-owned environment known as ESOP. When cable assets were sold employee stockholders were handsomely rewarded, a huge benefit for long-term workers.&nbsp;

The move in 2007 to a closed but strategically located savings and loan office at 9th and Main put KWBW its sister stations back in the heart of Hutchinson, greatly enhancing visibility and taking the stations out of crowded, uninviting facilities. But without the leadership and vision of Conger, Perks, Schmidt and Sharman much, perhaps very little, of what the "little station that could" has accomplished would been possible.&nbsp;

KWBW celebrates 90 years of local radio in Hutchinson

 Across the country, 13,135 people have been killed in a crash involving a teen driver from 2019-2023. More than 30% of those deaths occurred during the ‘100 Deadliest Days’ between Memorial Day and&nbsp;Labor Day, according to a AAA review of crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On average, 8 people are killed per day in teen-involved driving crashes in the summer, compared to 7 per day during the rest of the year.&nbsp;

In 2023 alone, the most recent year of complete crash data, 2,897 people nationwide were killed in crashes involving a teen driver. A third of those deaths, 860, happened during the 100 Deadliest Days.&nbsp;

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety analysis of NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data of deadly crashes involving drivers ages 15-18 in Kansas shows the tragic impact in the summer months:&nbsp;

“Summer months are particularly dangerous as more young drivers hit the road during school breaks with many logging more unsupervised driving time than usual,” said Jake Nelson, Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research at AAA. “We encourage families to take advantage of AAA resources like our driver education classes and parent-teen safe driving agreements to help set clear expectations for driving privileges.”&nbsp;

There are steps teens and parents can take to save lives. Parents should model safe driving behavior and talk with their teens about buckling up, obeying speed limits, and putting phones away. With teens out of school, summer is also a great time for young drivers to complete a comprehensive driver education course to learn the rules of the road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

100 Deadliest Days for teen drivers

On Thursday evening, May 22nd, the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale (KMRS) held its Annual Meeting at Hesston College Mennonite Church in Hesston. This year’s theme was “May Christ rule our hearts”, based on Colossians 3:15. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of $678,750 to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Central States Office.

MCC is a global, not-for-profit organization representing 15 Mennonite, Brethren in Christ, and Amish bodies in North America focused on responding to humanitarian crises through direct relief, development, and peacebuilding activities.

For the past 56 years, each April, the various Mennonite and Anabaptist churches in Kansas have come together to hold a Relief Sale to support the work of MCC. This event continues to be the 2nd largest event held on the State Fair Grounds in Hutchinson, with an estimated two-day attendance of 20,000. The event includes multiple auctions, including Quilt Auction, General Auction, Silent Auction, and many other booths and food options.

KMRS Board Chair Jim Robb commented, “The Sale was a success in many ways. Of course, we are thrilled with the generosity that will help support the critical work of MCC worldwide. We also recognize the gift of community and the value of so many churches and volunteers coming together to support a cause bigger than ourselves.”

Mennonite Relief Sale rases over $678K 

KINGMAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 9p.m. Wednesday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Dodge Ram driven by Frank A.&nbsp;Brough, 54, Kinsley, was southbound on Kansas 14 fifteen miles south of Kingman. The pickup&nbsp;crossed the centerline and struck a 2021 Ford Bronco driven by Jenna G.&nbsp;Dunsworth, 18, Attica, head-on in the northbound lane.

EMS transported&nbsp;Dunsworth to Wesley Medical Center. Brough was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas teen hospitalized after head-on crash

BUHLER, Kan. — Charlie Wells, a volunteer firefighter with the Buhler Fire Department, has been named the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram First Responder of the Month for May.

Wells, who joined the department in September of 2022, balances his service with his full-time work as a finished carpenter and owner of Wells Carpentry. Despite the demands of running his own business, he responds to calls whenever duty calls.

“I am a self-employed finished carpenter,” Wells said. “That’s what I do during the day. I travel around doing mainly remodels, and if I’m close enough when a call comes in, I drop what I’m doing there and respond to that.”

Though his professional path took a different turn, firefighting was always on Wells’ radar. He completed the Fire Science Program at HutchCC in 2005.

“I actually went to Hutch JUCO, went through the Fire Science Program '03 through '05,” he said. “I didn’t go that route. We ended up moving close enough to Buhler a few years ago that we moved into the fire district, and it worked out to where I was able to get on the fire department there, and that’s kind of where I ended up where I am now.”

The Buhler Fire Department includes about 20 volunteer firefighters who remain on-call year-round.

“We are all on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” Wells said. “We carry pagers and we have an app on our phones that when we get dispatched they both go off, and anybody that is available makes an effort to show up for it no matter when it is.”

Wells said the department typically handles about 100 calls per year, but that number was slightly higher in 2024.

“I think last year, the year total we ran about 130 calls,” he said. “That’s pretty typical. That was a little more than average, usually we’re a little closer to 100 — and a lot of those come during the dry season, late winter before things start greening up in the spring time. A lot of those are grass fires, brush fires. That’s really when we’re the busiest, grass fire season.”

The department operates a range of equipment, including a command unit, a fire engine, a new tender acquired about a year ago, a large brush truck with a 1,200-gallon tank, and three small brush trucks outfitted with 300-gallon tanks.

“We have a command unit that we got here a few years ago,” Wells said. “Typically our chief or captains will respond in that.”

Training is a key component of the department’s readiness. The team trains monthly, with larger joint sessions held quarterly with neighboring departments.

“The first Thursday of every month, we have training in the evening,” Wells said. “Then once every quarter, we have countywide training where we get together with Haven and Nickerson and the guys out in the western part of the county. We work together with Hutch Fire and we all get together and have big training days usually on a Saturday morning.”

For Wells, the call to serve is rooted in a desire to help those in their most urgent moments.

“My favorite part is just giving back to the community,” he said. “We’re all problem solvers, and when somebody calls 911 it’s because they’ve got a problem and they’ve exhausted all of their resources. They can’t solve it, and they need somebody else to help do that for them. It’s kind of just the excitement of the unknown. You don’t know what’s going to be next. Unfortunately, it could be something really tragic, but it’s just an opportunity to give back to somebody in need.”

Wells was nominated by Beck Wells: "Charlie Wells is a hardworking and passionate firefighter, Boy Scouts leader, husband, and father. He is always prepared to lend a hand to anyone who needs it with a calm and patient demeanor. He takes his leadership very seriously, always seeking out new opportunities to learn how to be a better leader through the books he reads and the people he associates with. I have never met anyone with a cross word to say about Charlie, and we are all beyond proud to have him in our community. He deserves so much praise and is rarely recognized for all of the work he does for his family, his friends, and everyone around him, so I hope you will please consider him for this award.”

Wells' Fire Chief Casey Howard said this about Wells: "He is an extremely dedicated member of our department. He goes above and beyond the standard to provide the services needed every time the pager sets tone. He is well-deserved of this award."
