HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters quickly contained a structure fire Saturday afternoon at a three-story brick building on East Second Avenue.
The Hutchinson Fire Department was dispatched at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, to a reported structure fire at approximately 701 E. Second Ave.
When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from third-story windows. Firefighters entered through the front of the building with a hose line and encountered smoke conditions on the first floor.
Crews quickly determined the fire was in the basement near the building's elevator shaft. Firefighters advanced into the basement and extinguished the blaze.
Fire crews then searched all floors of the building and found no additional extension of the fire.
According to the department, the building's construction, along with updated fire engines and hose loads, allowed firefighters to deploy hose lines farther and more efficiently. Officials said that helped crews make a rapid attack and contain the fire with minimal damage.
No injuries were reported in the department's initial release.
Kansas Gas Service, Evergy, Reno County EMS, Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications and the Hutchinson Police Department assisted at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
