 Description The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is a Licensed Nurse who plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates resident care and services in the long term care and skilled nursing unit and assists the Director of Nursing (DON) in the overall operation of Thorne Living Center (TLC). During regular business hours, the ADON assumes responsibility for the care of residents in TLC to ensure their physical and mental well-being is maintained at the highest practicable level and helps to maintain standards consistent with state and federal nursing home regulations as well as those of The Wesley. Summary of Supervisory Responsibilities: Provide leadership and supervision during working business hours to assure quality resident care at all times. In collaboration with the DON, assure there is adequate coverage of personnel and proper supervision at all times to provide quality care to all residents and to comply with state and federal regulations. Oversee the hiring, orientation, scheduling, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, and termination of nursing personnel. Ensure all personnel in the unit are oriented appropriately to their duties and assigned according to their skills, licensing and training. Be sensitive to the comfort level of staff members in their job responsibilities, especially with new employees. Assist in making team member assignments and work with the nursing scheduler to ensure a sufficient number of employees for each shift. If there is an insufficient number of employees on a shift, work in any nursing capacity needed to carry out the individualized care plan for each resident. Observe daily nursing care provided by nursing personnel assigned to the unit and assist in evaluating work performance and quality of care provided by each staff member. Participate in counseling and disciplinary measures as appropriate. Assist in evaluating the educational needs of nursing staff and report these needs to the DON, COO/Administrator, and the VP of HR. In collaboration with the DON, conduct regularly scheduled team meetings and impromptu meetings to include specific shifts as needed. Work openly, honestly and efficiently with other departments, administration, and the COO/Administrator.

 Summary of Infection Control: Serve as the Infection Preventionist for the facility. Observe staff performance to ensure proper execution of policies and procedures necessary to maintain compliance with acceptable infection control standards. Monitor implementation of appropriate precautionary measures for residents displaying signs/symptoms of infection. Ensure that staff members practice universal precautions and proper disposal of infectious waste at all times. Communicate implementation/discontinuance of appropriate precautionary measures with residents displaying signs/symptoms of infection to appropriate departments and to administration.

 Summary of Coordination of Resident Care: Oversee Therapeutic programming for residents on unit; keep abreast of all residents' current status, be aware of the overall needs on the unit to ensure quality care is provided to each resident, and participate in actual care of residents as time permits. Accountable for meeting and maintaining the established standards of resident care. Evaluate resident care according to each resident&rsquo;s care plan, established policies and procedures, state and federal regulations and participate in resident care plan conferences. Assist in the ongoing development, updating and execution of the resident plan of care and physician plan of care. Communicate changes as appropriate. Confer with residents and/or families about resident's cares and concerns as appropriate; attempt to bring resolution to resident/family conflict situations. Responsible for assessing any accident/incidents, including medication errors, occurring on the Unit, and the reporting of such as per policies and procedures. Follow-up on all incidents/accidents immediately as appropriate to situation. Monitor wound care status; pass on appropriate information to medical director. Ensure the changes in orders from physician are coordinated with the resident's care plan. Assist in discharge planning upon admission, ongoing and discharge. Complete discharge summary, if necessary. Assist with/coordinate pre-admission screenings, admissions, transfers and dismissals as necessary and work with other departments on same to ensure successful transfer of residents. Monitor availability of supplies in proper quantities. Ensure that equipment is in proper working order and that personnel know where such supplies and equipment are stored and how to utilize them properly. Review charts for content of charting and pertinent information. Oversee coordination of lab work, x-ray work, physician appointments; make rounds with physicians as appropriate. Supervise accurate medication and treatment administration to residents as ordered. Ensure DON and Administrator are apprised of changes in resident conditions and of emergency situations. Perform any nursing duties, as needed, to fulfill the resident&rsquo;s individual plan of care.

 Summary of Nursing Administration: Responsible for knowing nursing policies and procedures and for the appropriate administration of the same on the assigned unit. Execute and direct nursing care in accordance with regulations and policies and procedures of The Wesley. Participate with problem-solving and systems development for the Nursing Department; attempt to bring resolution to employee conflict situations. Ensure completion of admission assessments on new residents and other federal/state required assessments as necessary. Assist DON and Administrator in the survey process as appropriate, and assist with implementing new regulations and interpretations, as directed by licensing agencies. Demonstrate a positive image to residents, families, visitors, and peers to enhance the image of The Wesley. Delegate appropriate tasks to members of the team consistent with their job descriptions and licensure within the State of Kansas. Complete other duties and tasks as directed by the DON. Qualifications Currently licensed as a Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas. Experience in long term care and/or management experience is preferred. Prefer a certified Infection Preventionist. Possess proficient assessment skills related to geriatric residents. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Operational understanding of all regulations pertaining to Skilled Long-Term Care . In anticipation of America’s 250th birthday in 2026, AmeriStarRail has proposed a bold new partnership with Amtrak to launch a privately funded, coast-to-coast train service connecting Los Angeles and New York. Dubbed The Transcontinental Chief, the new train promises to transform long-distance rail travel and freight logistics in the U.S.

According to a letter sent by AmeriStarRail Chief Operating Officer Scott Spencer to Amtrak President Roger Harris, the train would begin operations on National Train Day, May 10, 2026, and be timed to support travel for both the America 250 celebrations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The project aims to move passengers, truck drivers, and their fully loaded tractor trailers across the country in less than 72 hours, offering what the company calls a “rolling rest stop for truckers.” At designated “RailPorts” along the route, truckers would be able to drive their rigs onto rail flatcars, then rest in onboard coach, sleeper, or dining cars during their federally mandated 10-hour rest periods.

In addition to freight-hauling, The Transcontinental Chief would feature a transcontinental Auto Train service for passengers traveling with cars, vans, motorcycles, RVs, or charter buses, with major stops in New York, Chicago, the Grand Canyon, and Los Angeles.

Spencer said the proposed service offers Amtrak an opportunity to confront the financial losses of its existing long-distance routes and revitalize cross-country rail with “the ingenuity of free enterprise.”

The project would require operating agreements with BNSF, Norfolk Southern, and New Jersey Transit, but Spencer emphasized that no new federal legislation or additional funding would be needed.

AmeriStarRail has shared the proposal with transportation leaders including former President Donald Trump, USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy, the Federal Railroad Administration, and members of Congress.

“This is a great opportunity for Amtrak to team up with the private sector,” Spencer wrote, “to usher in a profitable Golden Age of rail travel for passengers and truckers.”

If approved, The Transcontinental Chief could mark the first privately funded, coast-to-coast passenger and freight rail service of its kind in modern U.S. history.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southeast corner of East 1st and North Walnut.

The First Methodist Episcopalian Church was dedicated in 1875 at 101 E. First Ave. and cost $5,200. The Rev. Hiram Buck officiated for a membership of 125. The first photo shows that church building in about 1900.

A new impressive building at 101 E. 1st was dedicated in March of 1908. The second photo shows that building right after opening in 1909.

The membership had grown to 1,100. The third photo shows this building again in 1910.

Another larger church was constructed, only now formally called just First Methodist Church. The fourth photo shows that building sometime later along with the Soldier &amp; Sailor Monument.

The fifth photo shows the now-named First United Methodist Church today still at 101 E. First Ave., celebrating its 150-year-continued presence on the same 1st and Walnut corner with current pastor Mik King.

📷 Throwback Thursday: First United Methodist Church - Vol. 134

A former employee of the Nickerson School District has been arrested on child sex crime charges according to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan Stoecklein, a former coach in the district, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He faces charges of sexual exploitation of a child under 18 and attempted unlawful sexual relations.

A criminal complaint filed Tuesday in Reno County District Court alleges that Stoecklein promoted a performance involving sexually explicit conduct of a minor. 

The complaint also accuses him of&nbsp; "Unlawfully and feloniously attempt(ing) to engage in consensual sexual intercourse and lewd fondling or touching with a person who was a student enrolled at the school where the offender was employed, to wit: Nickerson High School, who was 16 or more years of age, and who was not married to the offender, while the offender was a teacher or other person in a position of authority, by completing an overt act towards the perpetration of the crime, done by a person who intended to commit such crime but failed in the perpetration thereof or was prevented or intercepted in executing such crime."

The incidents allegedly occurred between Jan. 1 and March 24, 2025.

Stoecklein is being held on a $120,000 bond. His first appearance in court is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Three day weather outlook 

The Hutchinson City Council addressed a full agenda during its Tuesday evening meeting, taking action on unsafe properties, subdivision regulations, and long-term infrastructure planning.

Following public hearings on 10 properties deemed dangerous and unsafe, the council voted to condemn three structures located at 806 North Plum, 22 West 5th, and 411 South Main. A fourth property at 211 East Fourth was also condemned, but city staff noted the owner had already secured a demolition permit.

One property, 1321 East Fourth, remains on the city’s watch list. Although still considered hazardous, the city will monitor progress rather than immediately pursue condemnation.

The remaining five properties—401 and 405 South Main, 2100 North Jackson, 3001 East Fourth, and 1221 East Fourth—were tabled until the Oct. 7 council meeting.

The council rejected both proposals submitted for Memorial Hall. One was deemed incomplete, while the other—a proposed $10 million “Unconvention Hall” backed by local business owners and Councilmember Richardson—was considered too expensive amid current budget constraints.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 19.

Young children, especially those under age five, are more likely to get seriously sick from foodborne illness. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is reminding parents, caregivers, and anyone packing school lunches to follow a few simple food safety steps.

“As the school year begins, we want families to keep food safety top of mind,” said USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Administrator Dr. Justin Ransom. “Young children are more vulnerable to foodborne illness, and we want to make sure they stay healthy and ready to learn.”

Here are USDA’s top food safety tips for the school year.

Use at least two cold sources, such as gel packs, frozen water bottles, or frozen juice boxes. Place them on top and bottom of perishable items like meat, poultry, and eggs. This helps keep food out of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/danger-zone-40f-140f">Danger Zone</a>, which is between 40 and 140 degrees F. In this range, bacteria can grow quickly and cause illness.

Use an insulated lunchbox. Paper bags are not a safe choice because they tear and leak as cold items thaw, which allows cold air to escape.

For hot foods like soup or chili, use an insulated container. Fill it with boiling water and let it sit for a few minutes before adding food. Dump out the water, add the hot food, and keep the lid closed until lunchtime. Hot foods should stay at 140 degrees F or higher.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department raised more than $55,000 during its 2025 School Supply Drive to benefit students across Reno County.

Now in its seventh year, the annual drive brought in $55,757.43 in donations, which will help provide essential school supplies to students in need across 34 schools—including public, private, and alternative learning institutions in USD 308, 309, 310, 311, 312 and 313.

In partnership with local teachers, HFD identifies the most pressing classroom needs ahead of the school year. Firefighters then collect donated items at entrances to school supply stores around Hutchinson. Once collected, the items are sorted, boxed, and delivered directly to schools, where teachers distribute them to students throughout the year.

The department emphasized that the donation process has been refined over several years to ensure transparency and accountability.

Corporate sponsors included Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Hutchinson, RCB Bank, Home Depot, Lowe’s and KMS LC. Distribution of supplies is scheduled for Aug. 6-7.

Hutchinson, Kan. – Hutchinson Community College has been awarded a $708,965 FRAME (Fostering Residential Advancement through Mentoring and Education) Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce. The funding will support the construction of three new residential dwellings in Hutchinson, providing valuable hands-on learning opportunities for students while addressing the community’s affordable housing needs.

As part of the project, students in HutchCC’s and USD308’s Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy’s Construction Technology program will build a duplex in the 600 block of East Avenue A, gaining real-world experience in residential construction from foundation to finish. In addition, the college is partnering with Interfaith Housing and Community Services to construct a single-family, stand-alone home on 10th Avenue. Interfaith will employ Youth Apprentices associated with the Construction Technology program in the building of this home.

“These projects represent a win-win for our community,” said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. “Our students are developing marketable, in-demand skills while contributing directly to Hutchinson’s housing development and revitalization efforts.”

The FRAME program is a statewide initiative designed to increase the supply of affordable housing across Kansas by fostering partnerships between educational institutions, nonprofit housing providers, and local communities. Other partners collaborating on this project are the City of Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Land Bank, the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Joel Haag from Mann and Company Architects, Interfaith Housing, GAF Roofing, in addition to several local contractors.

“We’re proud to support Hutchinson Community College and its partners through the FRAME program,” said Kerri Falletti, Grassroots Strategy Developer at the Kansas Department of Commerce. “This grant not only helps build homes — it builds futures by equipping students with critical construction skills while strengthening communities across Kansas.”

Construction is expected to begin this fall, with completion slated for 2026.

NEWTON, Kan. –&nbsp; Samara Maple, 25, of Hutchinson&nbsp; pled guilty in Harvey County District Court on Tuesday to one count of Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident, according to the Harvey County Attorney's office.

The charge stems from a collision that occurred on April 8, 2024, when Laurie Oswald Robinson, of Newton, Kansas, was found deceased on the embankment beneath the SE 24th Street bridge over Interstate 135. 

Subsequent investigation determined that Ms. Robinson had been struck by a vehicle while walking across the bridge, and that the driver had left the scene without notifying authorities.

Following a thorough investigation by law enforcement, Maple was identified and charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 14, 2025, before District Judge Jason Lane in Harvey County District Court.

The Harvey County Attorney’s Office extends its appreciation to the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and the Newton Police Department for their diligent work in bringing this case to resolution.

Strataca, the popular underground salt museum in Hutchinson, has announced it will remain closed until further notice due to ongoing maintenance concerns.

The facility initially closed over the weekend following unexpected maintenance issues and briefly reopened earlier this week. However, further evaluation revealed the problem had not been fully resolved.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of guest and staff safety, Strataca will remain closed until further notice as we continue to assess and address the matter thoroughly,” the organization said in a statement.

Strataca officials apologized for the inconvenience and said they are committed to keeping the public informed as they work toward a safe reopening. No timeline has been given for when the facility might resume normal operations.

Strataca is one of the region’s most unique attractions, offering visitors a chance to tour a working salt mine 650 feet below ground. It draws thousands of tourists each year.

Maintenance concerns close Strataca again

Reno County is moving forward with plans to consolidate its eight rural fire districts into a single countywide fire district effective Jan. 1, 2026. The move is aimed at improving service equity, simplifying budgeting, and creating a more efficient emergency response network across the county.&nbsp;

“Every resident in Reno County currently falls under a fire district,” Emergency Manager Adam Weishaar said. “But the boundaries have been invisible barriers. With consolidation, we’ll be able to move equipment more easily and ensure equal service for everyone, regardless of where they live.”&nbsp;

All eight rural districts currently operate with volunteer firefighters and maintain their own mill levies, ranging from 7 to nearly 20 mills. Under the new plan, residents would be served by a unified “Consolidated Fire District 1” with a single, uniform tax rate.&nbsp;

County Administrator Randy Partington said the consolidation would also streamline the budgeting process, eliminating the need to manage eight separate budgets. “This allows us to look at the fire service as a whole and plan more strategically for equipment and personnel,” he said.&nbsp;

Residents will soon receive revenue neutral rate (RNR) notices in the mail, which will outline the proposed changes. Partington clarified that while the notices may show two mill levies—one for the old district and one for the new—residents will only be taxed under the new consolidated rate. The dual listing is required for legal and historical purposes.&nbsp;

There is still a small protest window for residents who may wish to opt out of the consolidated district. If a specific fire district formally withdraws, the county will maintain a separate 2026 budget for that area. However, officials believe full participation is likely.&nbsp;

Weishaar&nbsp;also updated listeners on two ongoing fire station construction projects in Turon and Nickerson. In a notable shift, the&nbsp;Weishaar said the county is also proposing the addition of a capital line item in the fire district budget—something it has never done before.&nbsp;He said this would allow the county to begin gradually replacing aging fire apparatus, some of which date back to the 1970s. “The national standard recommends replacing fire trucks every 25 years. We’re hoping this capital plan helps us meet those standards by 2050.”&nbsp;

A public hearing on the budget and revenue neutral rate is scheduled for the Board of County Commissioner’s meeting on Sept. 10th. At that meeting, the commission must formally adopt the mill levy and finalize the 2026 budget. Once adopted, the budget will be submitted to the state.&nbsp;

The next meeting of the Board of County Commissioners is set for Aug. 13th.&nbsp;

The move is aimed at improving service equity, simplifying budgeting, and creating a more efficient emergency response network across the county.&nbsp;“Every resident in Reno County currently falls under a fire district,” Emergency Manager Adam Weishaar said. “But the boundaries have been invisible barriers. With consolidation, we’ll be able to move equipment more easily and ensure equal service for everyone, regardless of where they live.”&nbsp;All eight rural districts currently operate with volunteer firefighters and maintain their own mill levies, ranging from 7 to nearly 20 mills. Under the new plan, residents would be served by a unified “Consolidated Fire District 1” with a single, uniform tax rate.&nbsp;County Administrator Randy Partington said the consolidation would also streamline the budgeting process, eliminating the need to manage eight separate budgets. “This allows us to look at the fire service as a whole and plan more strategically for equipment and personnel,” he said.&nbsp;Residents will soon receive revenue neutral rate (RNR) notices in the mail, which will outline the proposed changes. Partington clarified that while the notices may show two mill levies—one for the old district and one for the new—residents will only be taxed under the new consolidated rate. The dual listing is required for legal and historical purposes.&nbsp;There is still a small protest window for residents who may wish to opt out of the consolidated district. If a specific fire district formally withdraws, the county will maintain a separate 2026 budget for that area. However, officials believe full participation is likely.&nbsp;<figure>

A water outage is currently affecting a portion of the city due to a planned maintenance project that required a wider service interruption than originally expected.

The impacted area is bounded by Sherman Avenue to the north, D Street to the south, Plum Street to the west, and South Severance Street to the east. City officials have shared that the outage will last approximately four hours while crews complete essential infrastructure work.

Although some residents were notified in advance, the expansion of the project area means not all households and businesses may have received a warning. City staff have advised that if you hear from neighbors or local businesses inquiring about the disruption, this unplanned expansion is likely the reason.

The Water Maintenance team is on-site and working to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible. The city thanks residents for their patience and understanding during the interruption.

Water maintenance causes water outage 

As students gear up for a new academic year at Hutchinson Community College, President Dr. Tricia Paramore is reflecting on a successful first year at the helm — and setting the tone for continued growth and accessibility in the year ahead.&nbsp;

Paramore, a longtime faculty member and administrator who began her career at HutchCC in 1996 as a biology instructor, stepped into the presidency on July 1, 2024. Now entering her 30th year with the college, she said her first year in the role was steady, productive and fulfilling.&nbsp;

“It could have been really big ups and big downs, but it wasn’t,” Paramore said. “It was really great. I’ve got a great team and our staff is amazing. Our customer service philosophy is to bring your A-game every day, be responsive and help people feel at home.”&nbsp;

That team-focused approach seems to be paying off. HutchCC celebrated another record graduating class in 2024 with approximately 1,000 graduates. Of those, 475 students crossed the stage in May, a moment Paramore called a “great time of celebration.”&nbsp;

The college also awarded more than 1,700 degrees and certificates last year — accounting for 11% of all credentials earned at Kansas community colleges.&nbsp;

“That's saying something,” Paramore said. “It speaks to the strength and accessibility of our programs.”&nbsp;

Enrollment for the upcoming fall semester is currently trending about 6% higher than last year, although Paramore noted those numbers fluctuate daily leading up to the start of classes on Aug. 20. Some specialized programs, such as physical therapy assistant training, are already underway.&nbsp;

Expanding Technical and Workforce Pathways&nbsp;

In line with changing workforce needs, HutchCC continues to expand its technical and certificate programs. Among the newest is a John Deere program in partnership with PrairieLand Partners. The two-year program, based at South Campus and the PrairieLand facility on K-61, will offer students industry-specific training, tool allowances and job placement upon completion.&nbsp;

Paramore added, “These students are going to have jobs when they finish.”&nbsp;

The push to support technical training reflects a broader shift away from the traditional four-year college track.&nbsp;

“College looks different for everyone,” Paramore said. “When you and I were in school, the four-year degree was the norm. Now, some students want to go straight into the workforce with a certificate or associate degree — and that’s great, too.”&nbsp;

Strong Presence in Area High Schools&nbsp;

HutchCC also continues to play a major role in dual-credit education across the region. Last year, nearly 2,300 high school students in 33 schools across Reno, McPherson, Harvey, and part of Rice County earned college credits through HutchCC.&nbsp;

“These students can graduate from high school already two or three steps ahead,” Paramore said. Many of the courses are part of the state’s Systemwide Transfer program, allowing for seamless credit transfer to Kansas universities.&nbsp;

Technical classes like welding, machining, auto body, and electrician training are also offered in high schools, supported by Senate Bill 155, which covers tuition for qualifying technical courses.&nbsp;

A Network of Campuses and Partnerships&nbsp;

In addition to its main campus in Hutchinson, HutchCC maintains outreach centers in Newton and McPherson, as well as numerous program-specific sites within Hutchinson — including facilities for barbering, cosmetology, fire science and agriculture diesel mechanics.&nbsp;

Paramore emphasized that HutchCC’s broad reach and partnerships make education both affordable and accessible.&nbsp;

“Eighty-six percent of our students receive some form of financial assistance,” she said. “And students who take courses in high school at the reduced tuition rate can even get reimbursed if they attend HutchCC full time after graduation. It’s almost like getting two classes for the price of one.”&nbsp;

With momentum building, Paramore is focused on continuing to meet community needs through high-quality education, responsive workforce training and strong student support.&nbsp;

“As a president, it’s not about me — it’s about how we serve our students, our community and the state,” she said. “And that’s what we’re committed to doing, every day.”&nbsp;

Paramore reflects on first year, talks HutchCC success

STERLING, Kan. — The Rice County Sheriff’s Office and Sterling Police Department will conduct a full-scale active shooter training exercise at Sterling College on Thursday, August 7, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

The drill will take place across multiple campus buildings and will include simulated gunfire and a visible emergency response presence both inside and outside campus facilities.

Officials emphasize that this is only a drill and is not related to any current threat. The exercise is part of an ongoing effort to enhance readiness and coordination among Sterling College staff and local first responders in the event of a real-world emergency.

“We’re committed to working closely with our community partners to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors,” said a statement from the Rice County Sheriff’s Office. “These trainings help us stay prepared and better protect our schools and communities.”

The exercise is being coordinated with local and state agencies, and notifications will be sent to the community in the days leading up to the event to keep residents informed.

Residents are asked not to be alarmed by the activity and to avoid the area if possible, during the training window.
