RENO COUNTY —One person was injured in an&nbsp; accident just after 8:30a.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by&nbsp; Cheryl Annette&nbsp; Wilson, 68,&nbsp; Hutchinson, was&nbsp;eastbound in the left lane of Kansas 96 at Haven Road.&nbsp; The SUV struck a deer causing the airbags to deploy.

EMS transported Wilson to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

As Kansas and much of rural America struggles with growing healthcare shortages—particularly in primary care—Fort Hays State University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is preparing the next generation of clinical leaders to fill the gap.

Nationwide, nearly 70 percent of federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) are in rural regions, where only about 11 percent of the nation’s physicians practice, despite 20 percent of the population residing there. The American Association of Medical Colleges predicts a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036, with most continuing to concentrate in urban areas, further deepening the crisis for rural communities—especially in Kansas, where many counties are considered "healthcare deserts."

To combat this, FHSU's DNP program focuses on training family nurse practitioners equipped to deliver primary care in underserved rural communities. Students are prepared not just to provide care across the lifespan but also to take on roles in healthcare leadership, policy, and academia—positions often inaccessible to nurses trained at the master’s level.

“The DNP is really about taking patient care to the next level,” said Dr. Michelle Van Der Wege, DNP Program Coordinator at FHSU. “It prepares nurses not just for clinical practice, but for leadership roles that can drive meaningful change in health systems, especially in communities where access is limited.”

A key distinction of FHSU’s DNP program is the emphasis on rural healthcare experience. Each student completes at least 225 clinical hours in a Kansas community with fewer than 10,000 residents. This real-world immersion helps students understand the unique needs of underserved areas, from chronic disease management to overcoming cultural and social barriers to care.

The four-year program includes 900 clinical hours and an additional 600 hours dedicated to the DNP Project—an in-depth initiative that helps students apply evidence-based research to real-world practice, often resulting in measurable improvements to patient care.

Graduates like Michelle "Shelli" Dreiling, a 2023 alum now practicing at Hutchinson Clinic, credit the program’s strong rural focus for shaping their career paths. “I thought I knew what I wanted, but my rural clinical experience changed that,” Dreiling said. “Now I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be—and helping train the next wave of DNP nurses.”

The program graduates approximately a dozen students each year, many of whom remain in or return to rural Kansas communities to practice. Dr. Van Der Wege is one of them. A native of Russell, she started her healthcare career as an EMT and now splits her time between serving patients at a clinic in Larned and shaping future DNP graduates. She’s earned every nursing degree offered by FHSU—from associate's to doctorate.

“Healthcare is personal in rural communities,” Van Der Wege said. “If we don’t train people to serve those communities, they’ll continue to be left behind.”

FHSU's Doctor of Nursing Practice Program helps meet critical rural healthcare needs in Kansas

Hutchinson leaders say the city is doubling down on its commitment to expand housing options, spur neighborhood revitalization, and make homeownership more affordable. Mayor Stacy Goss and Carissa Paxton, the city’s housing coordinator, joined BW Morning Show to discuss the latest progress and tools being used to attract developers and homeowners alike.

Mayor Goss said housing remains the city’s most critical issue — one that directly affects economic development, workforce growth, and even local retail opportunities.

“When a company looks at Hutch or any community, one of the first questions they ask is, ‘Where will our employees live?’” Goss said. “Having available, affordable housing isn’t just a need — it’s a key economic driver.”

Paxton detailed several major initiatives reshaping Hutchinson’s housing landscape, including the Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) — a state tax tool recently expanded to include communities like Hutchinson.

Projects such as Landmark, Plum Creek, and now the Hayes Street development have all been made possible through RHID financing, which allows the city to fund infrastructure like roads and utilities upfront. Developers repay those costs over time using the property’s increased tax value, rather than passing special assessments onto future homeowners.

“This approach keeps housing affordable for families,” Paxton said. “It’s a win for developers and buyers alike.”

The 36th and Monroe housing project will also use the RHID model, Paxton said. The city is working on that now.&nbsp;

The city is also pursuing Moderate Income Housing (MIH) grants, which provide up to $650,000 to lower construction costs on single-family or rental units. Paxton said the city’s goal is to “layer” MIH funding with RHID financing to make projects financially viable and sustainable.

Two developers had applied for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) for apartment complexes last year, though neither project received funding approval from the State of Kansas. Paxton said one developer plans to reapply with the city’s support in 2026.

Revitalizing Neighborhoods One Lot at a Time

Another focus for the city remains revitalizing older neighborhoods through infill development. The Hutchinson Land Bank, in partnership with Interfaith Housing, is helping remove blighted properties and make lots available for new homes.

Residents who donate abandoned properties to Interfaith can receive a tax write-off, while developers who build on Land Bank lots can take advantage of waived building permits, water and sewer tap fees, and small startup incentives.

"We have a little bit of startup money if you need help with soft costs, things like that, because we really want to see our south end of Hutchinson neighborhoods revitalized, and the best way to do that is little bits of new construction, just one house at a time," Paxton added.&nbsp;

Among those projects: a collaboration with Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy and Hutchinson Community College, whose building trades students are constructing pair duplexes in the Houston Whiteside District.&nbsp;

"So, they've adjusted our pre-approved plans," said Paxton. "That's another incentive. We have free housing plans for developing on infill lots. They've adjusted our duplex plan to be more historic in character, and so it will fit in really well with the historical homes around it.

Those pre-approved housing plans, available for free on the city’s website, help streamline construction for both developers and individuals.

Homeowners who invest in properties south of 11th Street can also take advantage of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) — a tax rebate that refunds property owners up to 100% of the increased property taxes from improvements for up to 10 years.

“If you sell your home, the new owner keeps that benefit,” Paxton said. “It’s one of the best tools to encourage investment in older neighborhoods.”

The city is also looking at new housing technologies, including structurally insulated panels (SIPs) — the pre-manufactured materials used in New Beginnings’ two small “tiny home” builds earlier this year.

“These panels are strong, energy-efficient, and even tornado-resistant,” Goss said. “We’re exploring code changes that would make it easier to use SIPs for full-sized homes or accessory dwelling units.”

Goss said the city’s housing progress reflects the results of collaboration between government, education, and nonprofits.

“We’re taking a proactive approach — aligning incentives, zoning, and infrastructure with what developers and families need,” Goss said. “Our goal is to make Hutchinson not just a place where people work, but where they want to live.”

JACAM Catalyst expands capabilities with Sterling facility upgrades

As Veterans Day approaches, communities across the United States are preparing to shine a literal light of gratitude and support for those who served. From November 4 through 11, 2025, Reno County will join counties, cities, and organizations nationwide in participating in Operation Green Light for Veterans, a campaign led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) to honor and support America’s veterans and their families.

Reno County announced that it will illuminate the Reno County Courthouse in green throughout the week, a visible symbol of appreciation and solidarity. The county is encouraging residents, businesses, and civic groups to join in by replacing one light — in a porch, window, or office — with a green bulb and sharing their display on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.

“We are excited to announce that Reno County is joining our colleagues across the nation in launching #OperationGreenLight for Veterans, an initiative designed to shine a light on the service of our veterans and their families,” the county stated in a Facebook post. “Now more than ever, our veterans need our support. In a time when our country is divided on so many issues, we can all agree that those individuals who risked everything to protect our country and our way of life deserve our support and gratitude.”

Each year, roughly 250,000 men and women transition out of the armed services and back into civilian life — a critical journey that often comes with challenges related to employment, housing, healthcare, and community support. Operation Green Light provides a simple, unified way for people across the nation to show veterans that they are seen, appreciated, and not alone.

In addition to the courthouse lighting, Reno County encourages residents to honor local veterans by visiting the Reno County Veterans Memorial located at 209 Des Moines Avenue in South Hutchinson. The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce recently took the national stage to highlight the community’s economic potential as part of Heartland Forward’s “Big Bets for America” initiative, held on Nov. 4, in Oklahoma City.&nbsp;

Heartland Forward, a Bentonville, Arkansas-based “think and do tank,” works across a 20-state region to help micropolitan communities attract investment and prepare for future growth. The Chamber was introduced to the organization through a connection with Startup Hutch Executive Director Graham Klemme, opening the door for Hutchinson to join a cohort focused on investment readiness.&nbsp;

Chamber President and CEO Debra Teufel represented Hutchinson during a panel discussion that brought together Kansas and Oklahoma leaders. Teufel shared updates on several economic development priorities, including Evergy’s upcoming project, plans for a 500-acre rail-served industrial site, and efforts to cultivate high-wage jobs and entrepreneurial growth.&nbsp;

“We’re really positioning ourselves for long-term success—everything from talent readiness and employer engagement to housing and quality of life,” Teufel said. “This initiative aligns directly with our strategic plan and reinforces that Hutchinson is investment-ready.”&nbsp;

Klemme also attended the conference as part of his continuing work to strengthen local entrepreneurship. Before joining Startup Hutch, Tufel said that Klemme&nbsp;worked with innovation programs in Iowa, Minnesota, and San Francisco, including Builders + Backers.&nbsp;

“I was proud to be on stage representing Hutchinson,” Teufel added. “Our partnership with Startup Hutch has been pivotal, not only for this opportunity but also in helping existing businesses plan for the future.”&nbsp;

That future includes conversations about succession planning—a growing need as longtime owners retire. Teufel cited The Wool Market, which recently announced its closure, as an example of the importance of continuity in Hutchinson’s business community.&nbsp;

Chamber touts economic potential at 'Big Bets for America' initiative

After a period of volatility in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the labor market for small businesses appears to be showing signs of stabilization, according to the latest jobs report released on Thursday by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).&nbsp;

The October survey found that 32% of small business owners nationwide reported job openings they were unable to fill—a figure unchanged from the previous month and the highest level since December 2020, outside of a similar peak in August of this year. Of those openings, 28% were for skilled positions, while 11% were for unskilled labor, the latter marking a two-point decrease from September.&nbsp;

“The post-Covid labor market appears to have mostly normalized on Main Street,” NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg said. “Jobs are plentiful, albeit declining, while qualified applicants are scarce but increasing for some industries.”&nbsp;

In Kansas, NFIB State Director Dan Murray said finding qualified workers remains a significant challenge for many of the organization’s members.&nbsp; “Main Street employers want to hire and expand their businesses. But finding qualified applicants is a near impossibility for many of our members.”&nbsp;

The report also showed a slight dip in hiring plans, with a seasonally adjusted net 15% of business owners planning to create new jobs in the next three months—down one point from September. It’s the first decline in hiring intent since May 2025.&nbsp;

Despite high demand for workers, 56% of owners reported hiring or trying to hire in October, down two points from the previous month. Of those, 49% said they received few or no qualified applicants. Labor quality was cited as the single most important problem by 27% of small business owners overall, marking the highest level since November 2021.&nbsp;

Industries feeling the most pressure include construction, transportation, and professional services. Nearly half of all small businesses in construction reported labor quality as their top concern—22 points above the national average. Finance and agriculture were the least affected, with only 13% of finance-related businesses naming labor quality as their primary challenge.&nbsp;

While concerns over labor costs eased slightly, dropping to 8%—a three-point decline from September—raising compensation remains a tool for many employers. A net 26% of small business owners reported increasing pay in October, though that figure was down five points from the previous month. Nineteen percent plan to raise wages in the next three months.&nbsp;

“Small businesses are continuing to grapple with the dual pressure of a tight labor market and slowing demand,” Dunkelberg added. “Finding a balance will be key as we move into the new year.”&nbsp;

But listen carefully to this next part. You’re going to have some unexpected things pop up along the way. That’s just how life works. I’m not trying to discourage you, but I want you to understand that even with your husband’s stipend, and help from your employer, you’ll have to stick to a budget and be smart with your money now more than ever before.&nbsp;

Later, once you complete Baby Step 3—which is having three to six months of expenses set aside as an emergency fund—Baby Step 4 is usually starting to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/the-truth-about-retirement">invest 15 percent of your income for retirement</a>. In your case, however, you’re not investing directly for retirement at that point. But you will be investing in your husband and your future together as a family. And it’s a great investment if he’s studying something that has practical marketplace application. Because that means you’re setting the stage to make back the money you put into his degree&nbsp;and&nbsp;have a bigger income for years into the future.&nbsp;

Again, as long as he’s not off taking stupid courses like left-handed puppetry or pursuing a Ph.D. in the history of German polka, you two are making a great investment for the future. Do everything you can to save and pile up money—that includes him doing something to bring in a little cash on weekends when he’s not in class—so you two can pay the bills, he can get through school and together, you can make this dream come true!&nbsp;

As Kansans brace for frigid temperatures this weekend, safety experts and local officials are urging residents to take precautions when heating their homes. With house fires spiking during the coldest months of the year, knowing how to safely use space heaters, fireplaces, and furnaces can be the difference between comfort and catastrophe.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the U.S., with space heaters responsible for the majority of incidents. The American Red Cross of South Central and Southeast Kansas reports that home fire responses are 30% higher during cold weather than during the rest of the year.

“Too often we see preventable tragedies happen when families try to stay warm,” said Shannon Wedge, Executive Director of the regional Red Cross. “Simple steps like keeping flammable items three feet away from heat sources and testing smoke alarms can save lives.”

To reduce the risk of fire, officials recommend these guidelines:

In addition to safe heating practices, it is recommended to test smoke alarms monthly and practice a two-minute home escape plan — the average amount of time a family may have to get out of a burning home.&nbsp;

Families who cannot afford smoke alarms or who are unable to install them can contact their local Red Cross office for help.

Since 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has partnered with communities nationwide to install free smoke alarms, create fire escape plans, and educate residents on fire safety. The campaign has been credited with saving over 2,500 lives so far.

Dillons honors military heroes on Veterans Day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Moose Lodge will host its 19th annual veterans fundraiser this Saturday, Nov. 8, continuing a tradition started nearly two decades ago by local veteran John Miller to honor service members and support veterans’ causes.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m. with a donation-based turkey dinner at Moose Lodge #982, 1401 E. 1st Ave. There is a dance that starts at 7 p.m., and the main veterans recognition ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. Veterans are admitted free; Moose Lodge members will be charged $8 and non-members $10.

Miller, a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and American Legion Riders, launched the event after noticing Hutchinson lacked a full ceremony honoring veterans. 

“We have short ceremonies, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, maybe a breakfast, but not one that let veterans tell their stories and interact with the crowd,” he said. “I didn’t think it was fair to have Veterans Day without a veterans ceremony.”

Since then, the fundraiser has grown with support from the Moose Lodge, which provides the building and assistance. “They said, ‘We won’t charge you for the lodge and we’ll help you do everything we can,’ and it just blossomed from there,” Miller said. The lodge now even issues a special membership card for veterans.

Each year, proceeds benefit local veterans organizations, including the American Legion, AMVETS and both VFW posts. Additional funds are donated to a selected nonprofit. Past recipients include Healing Waters, which takes wounded veterans on fishing trips; Patriotic Adventures, which provides outdoor experiences for injured service members; and Wounded Warriors. This year’s chosen organization is KS for Vets, which helps local veterans with home modifications, utility assistance and support services. 

“They widen doors for wheelchairs, build ramps, help pay electric bills, whatever veterans need that they can’t afford,” Miller said.

Saturday’s ceremony will also honor Rachel, an O’Reilly Auto Parts employee whose son, an Army paratrooper, was severely injured when his parachute failed to deploy properly. 

“He’s been in the hospital for two years. He just learned to talk again about a month ago,” Miller said. 

Local veterans groups will present her with plaques, a Blue Star Family flag and a special throw blanket for her son.

Miller said the event also serves to remind the community of the unseen struggles many veterans face, including PTSD and mental health challenges. 

“It’s not always the broken bones you see—it’s what’s going on inside that can be worse,” he said. 

He highlighted the American Legion’s “Be the One” program, which encourages veterans to reach out to fellow veterans who may be struggling.

Businesses across Hutchinson continue to support the fundraiser, some for all 19 years, including Chafin Electric, Good Samaritan Funeral and Retirement Home, and B&amp;J Smoke Shop. New supporters this year include Hutch Auto Body.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department is welcoming a new four-legged officer to its ranks. K9 Strike, a German Shorthaired Pointer with international training and specialized skills, officially joined the force this September.

Born on May 3, 2024, in the Czech Republic, K9 Strike underwent initial training through K9 Working Dogs International (K9WDI) before being recruited by the department this fall. He is partnered with Officer Ryan Aden, and together the duo has already completed their certification as a team in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Strike is certified to detect a range of illegal narcotics, including PCP, LSD, psilocybin, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. He brings a critical toolset to the department, especially as law enforcement agencies across the country face rising concerns over drug trafficking and opioid abuse.

In addition to his narcotics detection abilities, Strike is trained to identify ground disturbances—a valuable skill in search and rescue operations, including locating missing persons.

The department says Strike is already proving to be a valuable addition to its K9 team, enhancing both its patrol and investigative functions.

“Strike and Officer Aden have trained extensively together, and we’re confident they will make a strong impact in keeping our community safe,” the department said in a statement.

Hutch Police add new K-9 officer

With winter temperatures beginning to settle across the region, the Salvation Army of Hutchinson is stepping up to help families stay warm through its annual coat distribution, taking place this weekend at its main facility at 700 N. Walnut Street, behind Wendy’s off Main.

Thanks to a generous community partnership, hundreds of coats have been collected, cleaned, and prepared for distribution. Ineeda Cleaners led the charge with a successful coat drive and also donated their services to professionally clean every item—ensuring that each coat is ready for a new home.
