BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman says the district is introducing new initiatives this spring.
Among those efforts is a new event designed to encourage physical activity among elementary students.
The district will host its first-ever “Are You Faster Than a Fifth Grader?” event on April 25, bringing together all fifth-grade students for a two-mile walk/run. The course will include a lap around the track, a stretch along the Buhler walking path, and a return finish on the track.
Couchman said the event is intended to build interest in lifelong fitness while also creating a fun, community-centered experience.

“We’re trying to start a new annual tradition that promotes physical fitness and brings our fifth graders together,” Couchman said.
Students who complete the race will receive a medal, with an additional incentive for those who outperform Couchman herself. The Buhler Education Foundation is also supporting the event by offering $200 scholarships to the top male and female finisher from each elementary school, to be awarded upon graduation.
Beyond the fitness event, Buhler schools continue to expand family engagement efforts across the district. Recent events have included elementary art showcases, family game nights, and upcoming celebrations such as Buhler Grade School’s 70th anniversary on April 16.
The district is also seeing continued success in student programs. Ninety students recently qualified for state competition through regional solo and ensemble music events.
Buhler High School student Taylor Beals earned a $600 scholarship through a entrepreneurship competition hosted by StartUp Hutch.

Looking ahead, Couchman said the district remains focused on creating opportunities that connect students, families and the broader community.
“Schools do such a great job of bringing community together,” she said.
