MARION COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Thursday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Honda Civic driven by Zane Alver&nbsp;Stephens, 18, Goessel, was southbound on Kansas 15 just north of NW 108th Street. The car crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2019 Indian Chieftain Horse motorcycle driven by Elisha Dawn&nbsp;Guest, 50, Newton.

EMS transported Stephens and&nbsp;Guest to Wesley Medical Center. The teen driver was not wearing a seat belt and the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

I love it when young alumni remind us why we do what we do—why we teach, mentor, and build programs that stretch beyond the classroom. Kiley Whipple is one of those students. A recent graduate of Fort Hays State University, Kiley embodies the spirit of a Tiger: bold, compassionate, and committed to making a difference.

Originally from Ingalls, Kansas, Kiley graduated this spring with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning dual degrees in Agricultural Education and Secondary Education. Her academic excellence is matched only by her dedication to service and leadership. From her work as a VIP Ambassador to her role in the registrar’s office, Kiley has left her mark on nearly every corner of our campus. And now, she’s blazing a new trail—one that connects agriculture, education, and community in a way that’s never been done before at FHSU.

This summer, Kiley took on a pioneering role as the lead organizer and educator for the first-ever FHSU Farm to Plate summer camps, a collaboration between our Department of Agriculture and the Sternberg Museum Science Camps. These camps, designed for children ages 6 to 11, offered an immersive week-long experience in agriculture, food science, and sustainability. From soil health and gardening to animal science and nutrition, the camps answered one simple but profound question: Where does our food come from?

Kiley’s leadership was instrumental in transforming this idea into reality. Selected as a local food fellow through the K-State Extension Farm to Plate initiative, she spent four weeks preparing the camp curriculum and logistics, followed by two weeks of hands-on camp instruction. Her vision was clear: to give children meaningful, tactile experiences that would spark curiosity and foster a lifelong appreciation for agriculture.

“The summer camps were really successful,” Kiley shared. “We wanted to make sure the kids had as much hands-on experience as we could get in the week they were here with us.”

And hands-on they were! Campers interacted with live animals, including pigs, goats, calves, and sheep. They fed a bottle calf brought in by Kiley’s own family, explored gardening techniques, and learned about production agriculture. They even climbed aboard a combine brought by Carrico Implement. Community partners like Harvest Hays and Midland Marketing provided engaging presentations and activities that brought the food system to life.

Kiley’s humility and gratitude shine through when she talks about the people who helped make the camps a success. She credits Dr. Sophie Ano, chair of the FHSU Agriculture&nbsp;Department, and Polly Pfeifer, the department’s administrative assistant, for their tireless coordination and support. She also praises Gene Hanson, Mark Weve, and the entire University Farm team for their readiness to jump in and assist wherever needed.

“There are so many people I need to thank,” Kiley said. “It was a real community effort.”

That phrase—community effort—is at the heart of everything Kiley does. Whether she’s mentoring young students, collaborating with local organizations, or preparing to teach agriculture and advise FFA at WaKeeney High School this fall, Kiley brings people together. She builds bridges between generations, between communities, and between education and real-world experience.

Kiley’s work with Harvest Hays this summer is another example of her heart for service. This social enterprise, run by The Arc of Central Plains, empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through high tunnel farming.

As she begins her new teaching role in WaKeeney, Kiley will also be pursuing her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction right here at FHSU. Her commitment to lifelong learning and educational excellence is a testament to the values we hold dear at Fort Hays State.

I am incredibly proud of Kiley and the legacy she is building. Her story reminds us that education is not confined to textbooks or lecture halls—it lives in the soil, in the barn, in the conversations between a child and a farmer. It thrives when we connect knowledge with action, and when we empower students to lead with heart.

Kansas woman hospitalized after semi rear-ends a pickup

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall voiced strong support for the USDA's recent reorganization, major tax reforms, new trade agreements, and enhanced protections for American agriculture in a sweeping interview highlighting recent policy wins under the Trump administration.

At the top of the list is Secretary of Agriculture Jennifer Rollins’ decision to decentralize the USDA, moving personnel out of Washington, D.C., and into five regional centers, including Kansas City.

“I’m super excited about it,” Marshall said. “When government officials are closer to the people they serve, they do a better job.”

Citing low in-office attendance — just 6% of USDA employees were physically in their D.C. offices until January — Marshall praised the move for improving efficiency and aligning the USDA's Ag Economics and research loan divisions with nearby agricultural institutions like Kansas State University, Iowa State University, University of Nebraska, and University of Missouri.

Tax Reform a Win for Middle Class and Farmers

Marshall also celebrated permanent tax cuts secured through the recent reconciliation package, calling them a significant win for working families and small businesses.

“This bill could mean $1,000 more in the pockets of Kansas families every month,” he said, highlighting the elimination of taxes on tips and Social Security income, expanded deductions for farm equipment, and the doubling of death tax exemptions.

Marshall emphasized that the provisions particularly benefit Kansas farmers and co-ops. “Everything the farmer asked for, we were able to deliver,” he said.

Marshall touted multiple trade breakthroughs secured by the Trump administration, including long-awaited access for American beef to the Australian market and the removal of non-tariff barriers in the European Union.

“For the first time in my life, we’ll be selling cheeseburgers and ethanol in Europe,” Marshall said. “These deals are opening the door for Kansas commodities around the globe.”

He linked the agreements with a broader strategy to pressure China through regional alliances and prevent tariff workarounds such as trans-shipping.

Protecting Farmland from Foreign Influence

Marshall also addressed rising concerns over foreign investment in U.S. farmland. He praised Secretary of Agriculture Brooks Rollins for issuing an executive rule barring countries of concern, including China and Iran, from purchasing American agricultural land.

“It’s not just about how much land they buy, it’s where they’re buying,” Marshall said, citing purchases near Fort Riley and other military installations. He called for further action from state legislatures to restrict such acquisitions.

While agriculture dominated the discussion, Marshall also touched on positive developments for Kansas’ aviation sector. He noted that trade partners including Qatar and Vietnam are committing to buy Boeing aircraft, a boost for Kansas manufacturers like Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita.

“These deals are not just about agriculture,” he said. “They’re about aviation and advanced manufacturing too — industries critical to Kansas’ economy.”

Marshall concluded by noting that the technological innovation driving the aerospace sector also supports defense, satellite, and semiconductor industries, areas where Kansas companies are seeing increased demand.

HARVEY COUNTY —Five Newton teens are now in custody after a shooting Wednesday night, according to a social media report from Newton Police.

The investigation has led police to conclude this was a gun and drug trade deal gone wrong. One side brandished a gun, and shots were exchanged between the two groups. This conclusion is based on interviews of all those involved, as well as independent witnesses.

 The five boys, all believed to be 17, are facing various charges depending on their involvement, including attempted murder, aggravated robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and drug possession. 

The shooting occurred at around 5:30 Wednesday evening at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of East Broadway. One boy was injured and taken by ambulance to a Wichita hospital. He was treated and released and was later arrested. Police worked three scenes overnight: the apartment complex on East Broadway where the shooting occurred, a house near 10th and Oak where the injured teen first fled, and a car crash near Second and High where a fleeing suspect hit a parked car.

Police have interviewed many witnesses and are still working to confirm what happened and why. Police believe they have spoken to all those involved, and the community is not in danger.

Details remain unclear, but the community is not in danger at this time.&nbsp;

Police: Shooting in Newton a drug deal gone wrong

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson is preparing for the 2025-26 school year while also accelerating plans to expand into Salina after receiving a $500,000 challenge gift.

CEO Lance Patterson said enrollment for the upcoming year is nearly full, with a few spots remaining in select grades. Parents can register at <a href="https://www.bgchutch.com/s/">bgcHutch.com</a> and join a waitlist if their child’s grade level has reached capacity.

The club also received welcome news when $300,000 in federal 21st Century Community Learning Center funding was reinstated after being unexpectedly frozen earlier this summer.

“That was a huge relief,” Patterson said. “We were sweating there for a little bit. Everything we had planned for the upcoming school year had to be reevaluated. Fortunately, we didn’t have to make any changes because those funds became available.”

The recent half-million-dollar challenge gift will allow the organization to begin serving children in Salina earlier than expected. For every dollar donated to the club’s endowment, a matching dollar in operating funds will be provided, creating up to $500,000 for startup costs.

Patterson said the Hutchinson club will oversee the new site because Boys and Girls Clubs of America does not charter new organizations, only new locations under existing clubs.

“It comes down to sustainability,” Patterson said. “Established organizations have all the policies and systems in place, which makes the chances of success much higher. Salina will essentially operate as its own club with separate funding and resources, but legally it will remain part of Hutchinson’s organization.”

The expansion fulfills a long-held vision for Salina educator Millie Moy, who has advocated for a Boys and Girls Club in the community for more than 20 years.

“She’s had this dream for decades,” Patterson said. “About three years ago she gathered a group that was determined to make it happen. They reached out to us, and we’ve been working together ever since.”

The new site is expected to open at Oakdale Elementary School in Salina. The $500,000 gift, provided through the Augustine Family Trust, will fund about two and a half years of operations while building the club’s long-term endowment.

The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson is celebrating its 35th year in the community and remains the westernmost location in Kansas. Patterson said the organization’s impact is best reflected in stories like that of Alliyah Gray, a former Kansas Youth of the Year who now serves as the club’s resource development and marketing coordinator.

“She always dreamed of giving back to the club that helped her,” Patterson said. “Now she’s telling the story of the Boys and Girls Club to the next generation of kids.”

The Marketing Director will assist the VPPR with creative marketing solutions and media advertising and participate in off-campus events. The position requires a friendly, professional, and knowledgeable person to positively represent The Wesley at all times.
 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS Responsibilities: Visit and contact potential referral sources including, but not limited to, hospitals, clinics, doctor offices, home health organizations, funeral homes, private homes, senior centers, financial management companies, referral sources and leads, and any other relevant parties and entities to promote The Wesley. Provide professional and friendly customer service when meeting with prospective residents and others. Maintain expertise regarding The Wesley&rsquo;s services and remain current with upcoming activities and events that are relevant to census development. Document information about prospective residents or relay information to the COO, Director of Nursing (DON), and/or Assisted Living Health Care Director (ALHD) for follow-up when appropriate. Conduct onsite tours for prospective residents, their families, or other interested parties in coordination with the VPPR. Provide management of tasks and supervision of the Marketing Assistant, if any. Assist the VPPR with campus events, innovation, and other marketing-related activities. Assist the VPPR with collateral development, marketing projects, and media advertising. Assist with posting information and advertising on The Wesley website, Facebook, and other social media accounts. Join civic and other organizations in coordination with the COO and VPPR. Maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) and other information per policy. Complete other duties, as assigned by the COO, which are reasonably within the scope of this position.
 QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Associate&rsquo;s degree or above in communications, marketing, or related field. Experience in a senior living organization (prefer Continuing Care Retirement Community). Knowledge, skills and experience in sales and marketing. Highly proficient with Microsoft Office programs. Experience using various industry-related software platforms including CRM and EMR. Must have a valid Kansas driver&rsquo;s license and maintain a record acceptable to the insurance company to operate The Wesley&rsquo;s vehicles. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities needed to succeed in this position: A strong desire to work with the elderly and establish effective relationships with businesses, agencies, residents, family members, and staff. The ability to present a positive image to the public in appearance, language, and personality. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong customer service and sales orientation. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" is entitled "When streetcars rode the rails."

This article is not about an address location but rather the topic of Hutchinson's public transportation system.

On June 5, 1886, John Severance (Severance Street's namesake) was granted a 21-year franchise to construct, maintain and operate a street railway in Hutchinson.

At first, the railway cars were either horse or mule drawn. The first photo shows one of those railway cars on Main Street in front of the Missouri-Pacific railway station at Avenue C and Main in 1903, complete with a coal stove for winter warming.

In 1906, the streetcar line franchise was let to Emerson Carey and electrified. The second photo shows opening day on Sept. 1 of the electric trolleys, complete with a band.

The third photo shows car #52 and drivers in 1910.

The fourth photo shows car #57 on the turntable.

The fifth photo shows car #58 in front of the Carnegie Library at 5th and Main being piloted by B.F. Reger (Perry Reger's grandfather) in 1915.

Hutchinson was one of the first cities in Kansas to have electric trolleys. The sixth photo shows the current form of public transportation (the RCAT buses) housed at Ave. B and Adams in front of the transfer station.

The purpose of the USDA demand is to create a federal database of SNAP participant information that may be disclosed to other federal, state and local agencies. In addition to personal data of Kansans, the data request includes retailer and business data documenting SNAP usage.

County reminds owners with overdue property taxes of deadline

PRATT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7a.m. Wednesday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Buick&nbsp;Rendezvous driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Beaumont J.&nbsp; Lowe, 55, Pratt, was southbound on U.S. 281 at Southeast 60th Street. The driver&nbsp;&nbsp;failed to yield to traffic and swerved to miss noncontact vehicle. The Buick traveled off the roadway to the east came to a rest in a field.

EMS transported&nbsp; Lowe to Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The driver&nbsp;&nbsp;failed to yield to traffic and swerved to miss noncontact vehicle. The Buick traveled off the roadway to the east came to a rest in a field.EMS transported&nbsp; Lowe to Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

U.S. Representative Tracy Mann called the recently signed "Big Beautiful Bill" a major step forward for Kansas agriculture, aviation, and tax policy, in an interview on the BW Morning Show. Signed by President Donald Trump on July 4, the bill includes several provisions Mann described as “Farm Bill 1.0,” laying the groundwork for a broader, long-term farm package later this year.

“There’s still more to do,” Mann said, “but we were able to deliver a lot of wins for Kansas producers.” Among those wins: stronger crop insurance protections, updated reference prices indexed to inflation, and significant estate tax relief for generational farms.

The estate tax exemption was raised to $15 million per person, or $30 million for a married couple, indexed to inflation. “That’s going to exempt out many of our producers so they won’t have to worry about estate taxes,” Mann said.

Additional agricultural investments in the bill include federal funding for animal health research, support for the livestock industry, and tax policy changes that Mann said lock in “the biggest tax cut in history for middle and working-class Americans.”

Mann, who serves on the House Agriculture Committee, said a follow-up bill—dubbed “Farm Bill 2.0”—is expected this fall to finalize so-called “orphan programs” that weren’t included in the July package. These include conservation efforts like the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), along with ag research initiatives.

He also addressed concerns about the structure of farm legislation. “Eighty-one percent of the Farm Bill is food and nutrition programs,” Mann said, referring primarily to SNAP benefits. The new law includes reforms requiring work for able-bodied adults without dependents to receive SNAP benefits.

Mann also touched on provisions benefiting Kansas’ second-largest industry—aviation. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he noted that the bill included a “down payment” on modernizing the nation’s air traffic control system and locked in low corporate tax rates important to aviation companies and their customers.

Reflecting on the first six months of President Trump’s second term, Mann praised progress on immigration, citing a record-low number of illegal border crossings in June, and efforts to reduce the size of the federal government.

“Promises made, promises kept,” Mann said.

The representative also addressed the Trump administration’s use of tariffs to renegotiate global trade agreements. He said the strategy—while not ideal in a free-market economy—has led to new export opportunities for U.S. beef and ethanol, particularly with the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Looking ahead, Mann said Kansas farmers are facing challenging margins due to high input costs and low crop prices, though weather conditions so far point to a potentially strong fall harvest.

He closed by highlighting key tax reforms in the law, including exemptions from taxes on Social Security for most seniors, as well as new provisions eliminating federal taxes on tips and overtime.

“These are really important provisions that are now signed into law—and they’ll be permanent,” Mann said.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly announced Tuesday $25 million for 30 projects to improve intersections and roads across the state. The projects were selected for funding through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP).&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Enhancing the safety and accessibility of our local highways is made possible by grants through this essential program,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“In turn, these roadway improvements help bring in resources and improve connectivity in various regions of the state.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

CCLIP provides funds for cities to make improvements on city connecting links that are on state highways. Selected projects are funded for the state fiscal years 2027 and 2028 selection cycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under CCLIP, cities with populations above 2,500 have local minimum contribution requirements, and cities with populations over 100,000 are required to have a 25% match. Local contributions significantly expanded the scope and total impact of the selected projects, bringing their combined value to over $39 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The essence of the City Connecting Links program lies in the shared commitment between KDOT and our communities,”&nbsp;said Secretary of Transportation Calvin Reed.&nbsp;“It's through this vital partnership that we can address both state and local transportation needs, fostering economic growth and connectivity across Kansas.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Projects in this program may fall into one of three categories: Surface Preservation (SP), Pavement Restoration (PR), or Geometric Improvement (GI).&nbsp;&nbsp;

SP projects extend the life of the driving surface, such as overlays or joint repair, and are funded up to $400,000 per project. PR projects typically involve extensive pavement rehabilitation or full-depth pavement. GI projects focus on roadway geometrics that address safety, capacity, or operational needs, such as adding turn lanes or improving intersections. The PR and GI categories are funded up to $1.5 million per project.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gov. announces CCLIP funding for road projects 

It's not a threat when you mean what you say, and President Trump has told Mexico and Europe he'll put a 30% tariff on imports starting August first.

 That's because negotiations on a trade deal are not going well.&nbsp; &nbsp;The EU and Mexico both said that it's unfair, but they did promise keep negotiating.&nbsp;

 Mexico accounts for 69% percent of America’s vegetable imports and 51% percent of fresh fruit imports.

With President Trump’s signature, the wide-ranging reconciliation package—referred to by some as the “Big Beautiful Bill”—has officially become law, delivering long-overdue relief for Kansas farmers and rural communities.

While much of the public attention focused on other provisions, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, highlighted how the law incorporates key elements of the long-delayed Farm Bill—provisions that are vital to the state’s agricultural backbone.

“This legislation includes the bulk of what’s traditionally known as Title One of the Farm Bill—the safety net that helps farmers keep going when market conditions make it nearly impossible to turn a profit,” Moran said in a recent interview. “This is something they can take to their bankers to secure financing and get operations moving for the new year.”

It has been seven years since the last Farm Bill was passed in 2018. In the interim, Kansas farmers have faced rising input costs for fuel, fertilizer, labor, and interest, while commodity prices have remained low. Moran said the resulting economic pressure has left many producers operating at a loss.

“The agricultural sectors in Kansas are getting squeezed,” Moran said. “This new law offers stability at a time when it's desperately needed.”

Moran also noted recent discussions with farm advocacy groups—including representatives from the soybean, sorghum, corn, and grain industries—who visited Capitol Hill to stress the urgency of relief. “Even if you're not a farmer, communities across Kansas depend on agriculture. Towns like Sylvia or Larned are deeply tied to whether or not local farmers are successful,” he said.

Alongside the new law, farmers are also benefiting from emergency disaster assistance passed by Congress last December. That funding is now available through local Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices and includes support for both weather-related losses and broader economic hardships.

“While recent rains have eased drought conditions in much of the state, the long-term damage remains,” Moran said. “Programs like this are making a real difference on the ground right now.”

The legislation also marks progress in a longstanding policy goal for Moran—permanently repealing the federal estate tax, commonly referred to as the “death tax,” for family farms and small businesses.

“Too many families have been forced to sell land or assets just to pay taxes after the death of a loved one,” Moran said. “These are businesses that are asset-rich but not necessarily income-rich. The new law helps ensure family operations can continue into the next generation without being penalized.”

Moran called the new law “a lifeline for Kansas,” and said its impact will be felt not just in the fields, but across every small town and rural community that depends on a strong and stable farm economy.

“Whether you live in Hutchinson or a town of a few hundred people, if agriculture suffers, the entire community feels it,” he said. “This law brings much-needed security to our farmers—and by extension, to all of Kansas.”

Hutchinson City Councilman Scott Meggers discussed a wide range of ongoing city projects and priorities in a recent interview, highlighting progress on local infrastructure, budget decisions, and economic development efforts.&nbsp;

Among the positive updates, Meggers said construction on the hotel and the Landmark Apartments is moving forward on schedule. The Landmark project is set to open next year, while the hotel could open as soon as late 2025.&nbsp;

“We’re really excited to see these projects taking shape. It’s great news for downtown revitalization,”&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

Facing budget pressures, Meggers confirmed that city leadership is reviewing expenses to maintain services without increasing the revenue-neutral rate. City Manager Enrico Villegas has been examining possible cuts, including delaying vehicle purchases and evaluating positions that may not be replaced following retirements.&nbsp;

“You don’t want to make cuts, but sometimes you have to find areas to scale back that won’t disrupt operations,”&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;explained.&nbsp;

Economic Development Role Reimagined&nbsp;

Meggers&nbsp;expressed support for a proposed joint economic development position between the city and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce. He said the move could streamline efforts to attract businesses and encourage coordination between the city, chamber, and county.&nbsp;

“I used to work at the chamber, and I saw how often efforts were happening in silos,” he said. “Bringing that role into the city can help us move faster when new opportunities come up.”&nbsp;

Dangerous Structures, Property Cleanup&nbsp;

The council continues to address dangerous and unsafe structures across the city.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;praised progress at the “worm farm,” a previously neglected property that’s now been removed from the unsafe structure list after compliance with city requests.&nbsp;

At the August 5 city council meeting, 10 more properties are on the agenda for review, with some already opting for demolition or applying for permits.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;emphasized the importance of property upkeep for safety and beautification.&nbsp;

The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 5 at City Hall.&nbsp;

He said the move could streamline efforts to attract businesses and encourage coordination between the city, chamber, and county.&nbsp;“I used to work at the chamber, and I saw how often efforts were happening in silos,” he said. “Bringing that role into the city can help us move faster when new opportunities come up.”&nbsp;<h2>Dangerous Structures, Property Cleanup&nbsp;</h2>The council continues to address dangerous and unsafe structures across the city.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;praised progress at the “worm farm,” a previously neglected property that’s now been removed from the unsafe structure list after compliance with city requests.&nbsp;At the August 5 city council meeting, 10 more properties are on the agenda for review, with some already opting for demolition or applying for permits.&nbsp;Meggers&nbsp;emphasized the importance of property upkeep for safety and beautification.&nbsp;The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 5 at City Hall.&nbsp;

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran says reforms in the newly passed budget reconciliation bill—commonly referred to as the “Big Beautiful Bill”—include critical protections for rural Kansas healthcare and reinforce long-term access to Medicare and Medicaid for Kansans.

Speaking in a recent interview from Washington, Moran said concerns about potential cuts to Medicare are unfounded.

“It was pretty much hands off. Don’t touch Medicare,” Moran stated. “There’s nothing in this bill that negatively affects seniors currently receiving Medicare benefits.”

However, the legislation does introduce future reforms to Medicaid eligibility. Moran explained that individuals applying for Medicaid in the future—not current recipients—must meet new work requirements and legal residency standards.

"The work requirement is 80 hours a month, unless they're students or caregivers."Moran, a senior member of the Senate Agriculture and Appropriations Committees, emphasized the bill’s significance to rural healthcare. He said ensuring continued Medicaid funding was vital to keeping rural hospitals and clinics open—especially in Kansas.“Keeping our hospital doors open, our pharmacies on Main Street, and our medical professionals in rural communities is essential,” he said. “Without them, seniors can’t stay in their hometowns, and young families won’t choose to move there.”Moran highlighted a key provision that delays previously proposed Medicaid reimbursement cuts until 2028. That delay, along with new language in the bill, allows Kansas to continue applying for enhanced Medicaid funding passed earlier by the state legislature.He said the bill secures up to $4.9 billion in additional Medicaid reimbursements for Kansas over the next 10 years, including specific support for critical access hospitals in rural areas.“We designed it so Kansas could still benefit from programs already in motion, while also opening the door to new federal dollars,” Moran said.The legislation also creates a newly funded national program aimed at bolstering rural hospitals, with Kansas expected to receive a significant share.In closing, Moran reiterated his commitment to preserving healthcare access in rural communities:“Whether it's Medicare, Medicaid, or general health services, I’m all in on making sure Kansans—especially in our small towns—have access to care close to home.”
