HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners were introduced
to their new Health Department Director during Tuesday’s regular meeting. &nbsp;Karla Nichols was named to replace Nick
Baldetti who resigned to take a position with McPherson College.

Nichols is an Andale High graduate and has a master’s in
healthcare administration from the University of Kansas. She has held
leadership roles at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas, as well as
Kansas Joint and Spine Specialists. Nichols was clinic administrator for Bob
Wilson Memorial Hospital and managed the operations, human resource functions,
and risk management for the rural hospital-clinic system. Nichols lives near
Pretty Prairie with her husband, Scott, and has two adult children.

Nichols said she will be working to make the transfer over
to her new duties in the coming days.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water
advisory for a portion of the Cheney State Park Marina, in Reno County.&nbsp;This
advisory is not related to Covid-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until
further notice:

The advisory took effect on December 01, and will remain in
effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial
contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of
pressure due to system maintenance..

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE
announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order
following testing at a certified laboratory.

Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible. Locally higher amounts may also occur in portions of South Central Kansas. 

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening commute.

Reduced visibilities may occur from heavy snowfall rates and winds gusting as high as 25 mph. Monitor the latest forecasts for updates on this situation.

Eagle Radio Hutchinson offices closed to public until December 14

HUTCHINSON – Hutchinson City Manager Jeff Cantrell announced today that David Sotelo has been hired to serve as the City’s interim Human Relations Officer.&nbsp;

Under the supervision of the City Manager, Sotelo will be responsible for administering the Human Relations Ordinance pertaining to anti-discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations in cooperation with the Human Relations Commission.&nbsp;

Sotelo currently serves as the chairperson for the Human Relations Commission, a position he will step down from while serving as the staff liaison for the City of Hutchinson. Sotelo’s first day is December 1.

Sotelo named Interim Human Relations Officer

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A medical condition may have contributed to a fatality car accident in Hutchinson Saturday afternoon.

Hutchinson police report that 69-year-old Marcus Gregory was on Lorraine when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a parked vehicle in the parking lot of Tractor Supply near 11th and Lorraine.

Gregory was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police say Gregory might have had some sort of medical condition just before the accident.

There were no other injuries in the crash, which happened just before 3:30 p.m.

Buhler man who died in car accident may have suffered medical condition

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sentencing is set Tuesday for a Hutchinson man who recently entered a guilty plea in connection with a 2017 shooting.

Maique Rodriguez was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of his uncle, Jesus Faudoa. Instead, Rodriguez pleaded guilty in October to aggravated robbery and robbery. He was supposed to be sentenced Nov. 4, but it was continued to Tuesday.

Faudoa was found shot multiple times in the 700 block of East 7th Avenue. Rodriguez then took the victim's cell phone and pickup. He was arrested in El Paso, Texas, earlier this year and brought back to Reno County.&nbsp;

Sentencing is set in front of Judge Joe McCarville.

According to numbers released by the Kansas Ag Statistics Service, 22% of the crop is in poor to very poor condition, while 45% is in fair shape and 44% in good to excellent condition.

Officials say 94% of the wheat has emerged in south central Kansas. More than 50% of the state's top soil moisture level is rated as short to very short, while 48% is rated as adequate.&nbsp;

Cotton harvest in the area continues to move along with 62% of the crop harvested.

The testing is free whether you have symptoms or not. The Health Department had asked to have the funding for the testing go until May, but the commission wanted to see how the program was working through the end of the year before extending it to spring.

    months of assistance, not to exceed $5,000 per household. If the
    application is approved, the landlord receives rental assistance funds
    directly from KEPP to apply to the tenant’s account.

be hosting a special event Tuesday to benefit Special Olympics. The “Cover the Cruiser” is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the old
K-Mart parking lot.

The Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run will be collecting
donations for the Kansas Special Olympics. Anyone who donates can put a
medallion on the Sheriff Department’s BearCat armored tactical vehicle.

&nbsp;The Reno County Sheriff’s Department participates in
the Law Enforcement Torch Run effort, in conjunction with national law
enforcement agencies throughout the United States, to raise awareness and
funding for Special Olympics programs. All proceeds from Tuesday’s event will
go towards programming for over 4,800 athletes in Kansas.

the Law Enforcement Torch Run effort, in conjunction with national law
enforcement agencies throughout the United States, to raise awareness and
funding for Special Olympics programs. All proceeds from Tuesday’s event will
go towards programming for over 4,800 athletes in Kansas.

Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar still feels okay about the amount of personal protective equipment available to those who need it, even with a large increase in cases in recent weeks.

"We're currently doing okay," Weishaar said. "We're still waiting on shipments of gowns and gloves that should be in sometime around mid to late December. Once those get in, I'll be a lot more comfortable. Since we still have an active disaster declaration in place from our Board of County Commissioners, we can still request resources from the state. Just recently, in the past two weeks, I've been putting in resource requests from them and they've fulfilled those."

Weishaar highlighted the support that the commission has given his office throughout the pandemic.

"We expected it to be here for a month or so and be gone, but here it is the end of November, start of December and we're still here and our elected officials continue to support us in that and that's huge," Weishaar said. "I know some counties, some emergency managers, some health care professionals aren't quite so lucky to have the support of their elected officials like we do here."

In counties across the state, as high as 20% of the health care professionals that work for counties are leaving, but Weishaar feels blessed that everyone seems to be working together here.

"Really, it's not stuff that we've done, it's stuff that the community has done," Weishaar said. "The Chamber of Commerce helped put together this steering committee, where it has everyone from businesses, to nonprofits to church gatherings and we did that really early and that's paid dividends for us."

Weishaar noted that it has been around 270 days since the beginning of the pandemic response in Reno County.

Weishaar: Reno County still okay on PPE, working together remains key

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — January 1, 2020 was a typical winter day with the temperature hovering at 50 degrees. The first day of any year is a good time to resolve to make life better in the year ahead. Little did we know that a pandemic unlike anything we have endured in a century would upset our lives in ways we could never imagine.

To date, more than 11 million Americans have been infected with COVID-19 and approximately 250,000 have died from the virus. Kansas holds the unwanted distinction as having one of the highest infection rates in the nation.

Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) and its very efficient and well-trained staff of healthcare professionals are stretched to the limits in keeping up with the spike in the virus in this area. The same is true for all from the largest hospitals in Wichita to the smallest in the western regions of our state.

In our nation’s 245-year history, America has proven itself to be a global leader of innovation, so it comes as no surprise that two pharmaceutical companies have developed vaccines which are reportedly more than 90 percent effective. Kudos to Pfizer and Moderna for responding to this national healthcare crisis. Also, it’s reported that more safe vaccines are on the drawing boards.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 will not go away the day the first American is vaccinated against this virus.

Eight months into the pandemic, we are running out of time for a mid-course correction. As a high school coach admonishes a group of young athletes, “Let’s get back to basics for the long-term good of the entire team.”

The remedies to slow the spread of COVID-19 are the same as was reported at the onset of the crisis. We don’t need to make an expensive purchase. One pundit recently said, what we need is a good dose of self-discipline, which goes hand in hand with the old expression “short-term pain, long-term gain.”

Others have complained that a mandatory mask order is a violation of our freedoms, which allows us to decide what is best for ourselves. Perhaps, this is one time we Americans must pull together for the common good of all.

A few feel the nation should adopt a “Herd Immunity” or place resources in treating and saving the lives of younger Americans in lieu of caring for middle age or older citizens. At Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, our mission is to provide all patients, regardless of age, with the same quality of compassionate care, which will always be our goal.

Our nation is blessed with tens of thousands of great scientific minds and they are close to unanimous in their advice, which is supported by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

If you will allow me to be a little repetitive from previous columns, below are some precautions from the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO), which have proven successful in slowing the spread of COVID-19.

---Wear masks with two or more layers to stop the spread of COVId-19. Research indicates wearing masks protects those around you, and reduces the chance of infection by as much as 50 percent.

---Remain at home as much as possible and stay at least six feet from others.

---Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.

---Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

---Clean and disinfect high touch surfaces daily.

The crisis has again reaffirmed what a great country we live in. Individuals and businesses have donated food to the needy. Zoom calls are now a norm for business meetings and even family reunions. Many tell about reconnecting with friends and family members they haven’t communicated with for years. This summer the Hutchinson Police and Sheriff’s department along with area churches and the Fire Department showed up at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center during shift change to say thank you to those responsible for treating COVID-19 patients.

This pandemic, like the one a century ago will have an end, and life will resume to, perhaps, a new sense of normalcy. In the meantime, let's pull together for the final stretch of what seems like a long journey, and we will all be better for it.

Let’s all strive to enjoy a happy holiday season as much as possible and hope that 2021 will be a better year.

COLUMN: Hutchinson Regional CEO gives update on COVID-19

Kan. —&nbsp;The new director of the Reno County Health Department will be introduced Tuesday as part of the meeting of the Board of County Commissioners.

After Karla Nichols is introduced, the public comment period will be opened and the consent agenda approved. 

New business before the commission includes the tower lease agreement for the placement of wireless equipment on the water tower in The Highlands. 

County Administrator Randy Partington will provide a report and the commission will have a 30-minute executive session on legal matters with no action to follow.

Kan. — The Hutchinson Land Bank Board of Trustees will meet Tuesday afternoon December 1, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. via conference call. 

On the agenda for the board is contract review for an application to purchase the lot located at the north end of Carey Park on East Harvey submitted by Nancy J. Moreno on October 14. Moreno intends to build a single-family house and has offered to purchase the property but wanted to talk to the board about tree removal.

Also on the agenda is review of the draft 2020 Land Bank Annual Report and resolving meeting dates for 2021.

Following the regularly scheduled public comment period, the council will approve the appointment of Christopher Swartz to the Airport Advisory Committee, Amanda Smith to the Public Library Board, approval of the City's 2021 water tap charges and the latest appropriations ordinance.

Also, the council will consider redemption and payment of the economic development revenue bonds for Disability Supports of the Great Plains and deeding them the property. In addition, they will consider an eminent domain resolution for the Cow Creek channel improvements, and a resolution of support for a Community Fisheries Assistance Program Grant to develop the 4th Street Arkansas River access point and approve a contract for design services on the concession building at Hobart-Detter Field.

The council will also receive a report from City Manager Jeff Cantrell and any items to be brought up by council members.

The Hutchinson City Council will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall. The meeting will be available on the City's Facebook page.

Hutchinson City Council to discuss deed for Disability Supports Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 1513 as of Sunday evening. The death count among Reno County residents is at 49.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has 190 active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 86 active cases, but has been responsible for 17 deaths. There are 44 active clusters in the county.

Out of 4,827 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic, there are 1,339 cases in the community at large. 3,265 people have recovered thus far.

Forty-two people are in the hospital. Two hundred total have been hospitalized. Seventy have been admitted to the ICU and 24 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is at 21.62%, with the overall positive test rate at 28.26%. 27.17% of the population has been tested.

The next community testing date is Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The site has changed for December to the Dairy Tie Barn on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. To schedule your appointment, call 1-844-834-3657.

"This is our 20th year," Stanton said. "It started out, I went to a meeting with Keith Schroeder at the AMBUCS and the speaker was from Toys for Tots. We brought back a box and we've been setting it up every year since then."

There will be boxes to drop off toys in several locations this year.

"The first location is our normal location at the Reno County courthouse on the first floor," Stanton said. "We would normally have them on the fifth floor, but because of COVID, we're having them on the first floor. We'll also have the hat and mitten tree there, so anybody who wants to donate to that can certainly bring those by the courthouse. We'll also have a box set up in the annex, back in the conference room. They've been helping us the last couple of years. That's just kind of catty-corner from the courthouse over at 125 West First. We'll have a box or boxes at Rcat, which is located at 120 West Avenue B. Then, our final drop off location is down at Reno County Public Works at 600 Scott Boulevard in South Hutchinson."

They will also have a special event for the first time ever this year.

On December 12, from 10 to noon in front of the courthouse, we're going to have a drive-by Toys for Tots drive," Stanton said. "We've never done this before, but because of COVID and people's limited access to getting into buildings and such, we will have boxes set up. Our staff will be out in front of the courthouse. As people come by, they can drop off a toy and we'll give them a little something to thank them for that."

The box locations are open now. They'll be taking donations until December 18th.
