HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amtrak’s SW Chief will be running its daily schedule through the weekend before it is reduced to running three days per week starting Monday.

Amtrak announced it was going to the reduced schedule on the Chief and other long-distance trains because of the downturn in ridership connected to the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under the new schedule, the Chief will depart Chicago on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. That means the train heading west will arrive in Hutchinson on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Going east, the train will leave Los Angeles on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. That would bring the eastbound train to Hutchinson on Thursday, Saturday and Monday.

The schedule will not change, meaning the eastbound train still arrives at 1:37 a.m. and the westbound arrives at 3:18 a.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Schools announced their two nominations for The Kansas State Department of Education Horizon Award on Thursday.

The USD 308&nbsp; nominees this fall are Nick Preheim, first grade teacher at Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, and Paige Steward, English language arts teacher at Hutchinson Middle School – 7.

Sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, the Kansas Horizon Award program identifies and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. The mission of the program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Horizon Award Program is a regional competition. The regions correspond to the state’s four U.S. congressional districts. The Kansas State Department of Education will appoint regional selection committees responsible for reviewing the nomination forms and selecting four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers per region for a total of 32 teachers.

Regional winners will be announced in January 2021.

"Students in Pre-K to 5th grade are in the buildings," Couchman said. "That seems to be going well. We've separated them out. This week, we're looking at how can we still keep kids in school even if we go to red and how can we meet those guidelines. Is there things we can do to even keep the cohorts down a little tighter?"

They're also still looking at whether and how to have spectators at activities, or if that's possible.

"We've set the guidelines," Couchman said. "We're saying okay, how can we meet those, still provide opportunities for our students, still have our staff feel safe and still accommodate family needs as they need to go to work. So, like I said, those competing values come together. We hope to have some updated things to share by Friday of this week."

That's also when the next gating criteria numbers come out. Couchman said she thinks they'll still be in the orange for next week, but it looks like it will be close.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man arrested just this year for a shooting that happened in 2017 waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered guilty pleas to lesser charges.

Maique Rodriguez Faudoa was charged with attempted first-degree murder in the May 2017 shooting of his uncle, Jesus Faudoa. Instead, Rodriguez Faudoa pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to aggravated robbery and robbery. Jesus Faudoa was found shot multiple times in the 700 block of East 7th Avenue. Rodriguez Faudoa then took the victim's cell phone and pickup. He was arrested in El Paso, Texas, earlier this year and brought back to Reno County.&nbsp;

Hutchinson man enters plea in 2017 shooting

WICHITA, Kan. — A local law firm is holding a special event to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Saturday, Oct. 17.&nbsp;

Bretz &amp; Young Injury Lawyers will be hosting the Ride Like MADD poker run in memory of Wichita police officer Stacy Woodson and his 10-year-old son, Braeden. The poker run will kick off at the Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Memorial, located at 455 N. Main in Wichita, at 9 a.m. and will include five stops with Twister City Harley Davidson in Park City being the final stop.&nbsp;

Officer Woodson and his son were killed April 27, 2018, in Wichita when a truck hit the motorcycle they were riding. According to court records, the truck driver had a BAC between .089 and .119 at the time of the wreck.

“Families like the Woodson family shouldn’t have to have empty seats at the dinner table because of such senseless acts,” Matt Bretz with Bretz &amp; Young Law Firm said. “On October 17th, we are riding in memory of Officer Stacy and Braeden.” Half of the proceeds from this Poker Run will be donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, whose mission is to bring awareness to the dangers of driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, to support the victims of these violent crimes, and to prevent underage drinking.

Bretz & Young to host poker run

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson native and former head of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) Dr. Rick Bright has left his current position with the federal government. Bright resigned from the federal government Tuesday, according to a press release from his lawyer. Bright was most recently with the National Institute of Health.

Bright went public with a complaint in May, alleging he had been removed from BARDA as an agency head because he resisted pressure to flood the New York area with hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug that President Donald Trump was touting as a treatment for COVID-19.&nbsp;

Bright graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1984 and studied at the University of Kansas. He began his medical career in Olathe.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Formal charges have been filed against a Hutchinson man who was involved in a domestic dispute last week.

Rey Sanchez is charged with criminal restraint, aggravated burglary, aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery.&nbsp;

Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and other potential charges following a domestic dispute the morning of Sept. 27. However, no charges of kidnapping were filed in the case.

According to the affidavit, Sanchez broke into the victim's house and attacked her in her bedroom. At one time, she allegedly escaped out on the front porch, but was grabbed and forced back into the home.&nbsp;

Sanchez remains jailed on a bond of $50,000.

Kan. —&nbsp;Democrat candidate for Kansas House District 114, Jeff Stroberg is a proponent of Medicaid Expansion in Kansas.

"Medicaid expansion is the most urgent thing we need to do for the state of Kansas," Stroberg said. "I'm running primarily from an economic perspective. When we have $4.3 billion leave the state, that has the opportunity to provide a significant amount of economic activities."

The district Stroberg is running in includes Kingman and as previously noted by State Senate candidate Shanna Henry, the hospital there has already had to make adjustments to stay open.

"Kingman actually passed a sales tax increase, because the citizens of Kingman knew how important that hospital was for their community. If we lose these rural hospitals, of which 30 are at risk, we have a risk of losing the businesses in those communities."

Stroberg said the amount of uncompensated care at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is also of concern.

"They are currently not getting reimbursed for lots of expenses," Stroberg said. "In fact, Ken Johnson at the regional hospital told me recently, it's up to $18 million only here."

Stroberg is running against Republican Michael Murphy in November for the seat that had been held by Jack Thimesch, who decided not to run for a fifth term.

Books not in the Bible the subject of lifelong learning class

HAVEN, Kan. — After much discussion the Haven USD 312 School Board took no action on its pandemic gating criteria during a special meeting Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Board met to discuss the criteria which is currently in the orange category. That normally would mean that students in grades 6-12 would be in hybrid learning. With few if any cases of COVID in the district all schools in USD 312 are still in full in person learning.&nbsp;

"We're still kind of in the process of making some changes to our gating criteria," Superintendent Clark Wedel said. "It will be back on the agenda for next Monday for further adjustments."

During last night's meeting, much discussion centered around using a similar method that Buhler USD 313 went to by narrowing the scope of any changes to the learning process to a building by building basis.&nbsp;

USD 313 went that direction recently when a small number of positive cases at Buhler Grade School forced them into full remote learning for a week for that building. While that school was in remote learning other schools in the district stayed open. It's that type of plan the Haven School Board may decide to go to.&nbsp;

"Our Board is interested in knowing if there are cases or quarantines in the building that would affect its ability to continue to function as normal," Wedel said. " They want something along those lines that&nbsp; would be in our gating criteria."&nbsp;

That decision could come during the next Board meeting which is set for Monday.

Testing in outlying communities for both symptomatic, asymptomatic people

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Wichita woman was sentenced to six years in federal prison after pleading&nbsp; guilty to providing the weapon that was used to kill three people in rural Harvey County nearly four years ago.

Thirty-five-year old Myrta Rangel had entered guilty pleas in U.S. District Court to one count of giving a gun to a person she knew would use it in a drug trafficking crime and one count of giving a gun to a person she knew was a previously convicted felon.

Rangel admitted she took part in a drug trafficking conspiracy including Jereme Nelson and others. Nelson and Rangel went to a home in rural Harvey County to collect a drug debt. Nelson shot 33-year-old Travis Street, 37-year-old Angela Graevs, and 52-year-old Richard Prouty, at a home near Moundridge where Street and Graevs lived. They were found dead in a driveway on Oct. 30, 2016. After the killing, Rangel and Nelson fled to Mexico. Eventually, Mexican authorities returned them to the United States for prosecution.

As part of a plea agreement, Nelson pleaded guilty to intentional second-degree murder, reckless second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery, according to Harvey County Attorney David Yoder. Nelson's plea deal calls for 39 years in prison.

One Thursday the school staff will go before the Kansas State Department of Education to make their formal presentation. The project requires schools to remodel their academic programs to create successful high school students. Schools chosen for the state’s redesign program spend one year planning what changes to carry out. They then apply the changes the following year.

Lincoln, Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, and Graber are all in different phases of the Apollo redesign program within the district.

The redesign is part of the Kansas Can Project which was initially announced in 2017 after the Kansas Department of Education got feedback that the community wanted more focus on students’ nonacademic skills.

Wiley Elementary to go before State Dept. of Education Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will go over several capital purchases during their monthly meeting on Thursday.&nbsp;

The purchases within the vocational department will provide major technical upgrades to the schools welding technology area. The Board will be asked to approve the purchase of 14 multi purpose welders for both the Hutchinson and Hillsboro sites from Lampton Welding Supply of Hutchinson at a cost of $73,093. The Board will also take action on purchasing five advance process welders from Lampton at a cost of $26,862.

The welders are needed to bring the welding program up to date with the latest technology that is being used in the industry. Also Thursday the Board will get an update on hiring a new Safety Academy Trainer. The new program would provide instruction on industrial safety and OSHA safety rules to business and mining operations across the midwest. The person hired would also design and promote safety training programs and develop safety plans for clients.And finally the Board will go into executive session to discuss negotiations with the college faculty.

The store will be a 35,500-square-foot collage of vintage, antiques, crafts, new home décor, clothing boutiques, and collectibles. The location will be open 7 days a week to shoppers. The store will occupy half of the former J.C. Penney area. The hope is to open by the first of December and the business plans to start taking rental applications around Oct. 19.

TOPEKA, Kan. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday it is investing a small grant that will be used as part of a major overhaul of Rice County Rural Fire District No. 1.

Rice County will use the $50,000 grant to assist with the purchase of six engine pumpers and build two additional engine pumpers out of the vehicles being replaced. These vehicles will be used in Rice County and portions of Ellsworth and Reno counties. Total cost of the refit is $1.4 million.

The partnership is made possible by the additional contributions of the Rice County Rural Fire District No. 1, contributing $600,000, and Rice County, contributing $777,247.

The Reno County Health Department, along with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), will offer a free workshop series for people living with chronic pain and their caregivers. The six-week workshop series helps people gain self-confidence in controlling their pain, better manage their health and lead a fuller life.

The workshops promote the development of skills necessary to lead a healthy life with chronic pain conditions. The workshop series is designed to complement medical treatments and education provided by healthcare providers. People living with pain and their caregivers who attend the workshop series will receive a free copy of the book "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Pain."

The workshop will begin on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. and is being offered virtually via Zoom. Participants do need an internet-compatible device. Due to the interactive nature of the workshop series, space is limited. Individuals and caregivers interested in attending should pre-register by contacting Diane Swinney at 620-665-8882 for a registration packet and additional information. The class will continue meeting weekly through Nov. 19.

Health Department offering pain management clinic


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager says absentee ballot numbers have been strong.

"They are coming in like crazy," Fager said. "Some of them are duplicates. Some people have already registered and everything, but as far as what we've filled for advance ballot applications, we are almost at 8,000."

If you filled out an absentee ballot application for the general election when it was sent to you earlier this year, you don't need to do so again. Assuming all ballots are in on time, absentee ballots turned in in advance help the election office.

"That will make it easier," Fager said. "We'll have all of those processed on election day and we'll have those results available. That will be the first ones that I import, actually."

Once you get your ballot, fill it out right away and if you're going to be in town anyway, bring it by the annex and drop it in their box, or there will be other places to drop them off.

"We'll be getting two more boxes," Fager said. "They should be coming in any day now. We'll be having those, one will be at the Nickerson city office and one inside of the Buhler city office. The hours that it's going to be open are only the hours the offices are open, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The one in front of the annex is open 24 hours a day."

If mailed, such ballots must be postmarked no later than election day and in to the election office by the Friday following the election.

Kan. — Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager says absentee ballot numbers have been strong."They are coming in like crazy," Fager said. "Some of them are duplicates. Some people have already registered and everything, but as far as what we've filled for advance ballot applications, we are almost at 8,000."If you filled out an absentee ballot application for the general election when it was sent to you earlier this year, you don't need to do so again. Assuming all ballots are in on time, absentee ballots turned in in advance help the election office."That will make it easier," Fager said. "We'll have all of those processed on election day and we'll have those results available. That will be the first ones that I import, actually."Once you get your ballot, fill it out right away and if you're going to be in town anyway, bring it by the annex and drop it in their box, or there will be other places to drop them off."We'll be getting two more boxes," Fager said. "They should be coming in any day now. We'll be having those, one will be at the Nickerson city office and one inside of the Buhler city office. The hours that it's going to be open are only the hours the offices are open, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The one in front of the annex is open 24 hours a day."If mailed, such ballots must be postmarked no later than election day and in to the election office by the Friday following the election.

Fager: More absentee ballot boxes on the way

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council gave approval on a bid for the rebuilding of Apple Lane during Tuesday’s meeting. The low bid from Pearson Construction at a cost of $1,215,774 which is below the engineers estimate. The project includes a complete rebuilding of Apple Lane and replacing a small bridge. KDOT will provide funding for 50% of the cost of the project.

Also, after much discussion the Council approved the 2021 street maintenance work for the city. The agenda item brought questions about how streets are earmarked for improvements. Councilperson Sara Bagwell asked about the wide discrepancy between what is spent on streets and funds used for other city services including parks facilities. Bagwell also said that the city is neglecting streets on the south end of town.&nbsp;

City Engineer Jeff Peterson noted that the city does maintenance of the 290 miles of streets on an eight year rotation. Most of the work for next year will be done in an area between 17th and 30th north and south and from Severance east to Lorraine. It also includes work between Lorraine and Halstead north of 30th.

The Council also approved contracts with the Public Service Employees Union and its Emergency Services Dispatchers.
