Kan. —&nbsp;Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate Jason Buckley believes government should be smaller, to what some people might call an extreme level.

"I definitely want to lower your taxes," Buckley said. "I would like to see the federal income tax completely abolished. That will leave more money in everyone's pocket.

Buckley didn't have an answer for how government would pay for itself in that case. He said where to cut, including defense and bringing the troops home. He didn't give an alternative tax system.

He believes both the Republicans and Democrats want too much government.

"The two main parties, they only want big government," Buckley said. "They want to spend your money in different ways. They both want big government. I want to shrink down the size of government. It's getting out of control with the level of debt they have, the deficit they have."

Buckley is optimistic that if he were to win, even if the other 99 Senators were from the two main parties, that he would find ways to help.

"Hopefully, my message will spread," Buckley said. "Then, eventually, there will be other like minded individuals in Congress. But, there are plenty of things that, Republicans and Democrats, that I can speak to both and potentially get enough to start the conversation."

Kan. —&nbsp;Talking Tombstones continues its residency at Eastside Cemetery at 500 South Cleveland in Hutchinson this weekend.

"This is something that started out as a fundraiser for the Hutchinson Theatre Guild," said Lynsey Becher with Stage 9. "People loved it so much, we keep bringing it back year after year."

The cast of characters this year includes some fairly well-known Hutchinson names.

"This year, we're doing Chester I. Lewis, Adela Hale, Delos V. Smith, Bernice Delano, Minnie Rayl, Mary Collingwood, Clinton Carter Hutchinson and Olga Johnson," Becher said. "We have a really exciting bunch this year."

The event will be presented slightly differently, as well.

"Normally, what happens is people will take a walking tour through the cemetery and go from actor to actor," Becher said. "Of course, this year with COVID, we felt like we couldn't keep people safe that way, so we have built an outdoor theater by the big mausoleum in Eastside Cemetery and people will bring their own chairs. We will have some chairs available for people who don't have chairs themselves. Then, they'll sit among the tombstones and the actors will come up on stage."

Talking Tombstones Saturday at Eastside Cemetery

The case count number in Reno County has bounced back up as of Wednesday afternoon due to another spate of cases in the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. 

According to the county dashboard, the HCF case count went from one earlier this week back to 38 on Wednesday. There are now 98 overall cases in the county. 888 people have tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, 787 have recovered. Three have died.

The community positive test rate is at 7.03%, with the overall positive test rate bouncing back up to 11.11% thanks to the new prison cases. 12.72% of the population has been tested. That equates to 7,995 tests administered thus far.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson teen is one of 10 that received a Kansas State Fair Grand Drive Scholarship during the competition held last weekend at the fairgrounds. Becca Paine was awarded one of the scholarships as part of the Grand Drive livestock show. 

The event was the second of three weekends of competition for youth to show their livestock in absence of the fair this year.

The program, which started in 2019, offers 10 $1,000 scholarships to any past or present exhibitor of the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive that is enrolled in secondary education and who graduated high school in 2020 or before. 

Applicants were required to submit their high school &amp; post-secondary grade reports. The applicant also had to write an essay describing their experience in showing livestock at the KSF Grand Drive and provide two letters of recommendation.

Paine wins Grand Drive scholarship

NICKERSON,	Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board approved a new collective bargaining agreement with its teachers during Monday’s agenda session.

Under the new contract base pay for teachers will increase $500 to $38,550. That increase and other changes to pay and benefits totals around $190,000.

The board also approved a Memorandum of Understanding which was put into the new agreement that deals with any changes in the school year due to the pandemic.

Under the agreement a committee consisting of representatives from each school building, a principal, and the superintendent will work to identify necessary changes to the Professional Agreement if the school year is altered in any way.

USD 309 Board approves new teachers contract

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners gave approval to purchase 13 rooftop HVAC units for the Community Corrections building during their regular agenda session. The Board approved the bid from Sturgeon Plumbing at a cost of $80,741. Funds for the purchase will come from rent payments made to the county from the state run agency.

The board also took time to discuss a new fiber optic system for the landfill and public works. Technical problems caused by weather and other factors have limited the usefulness of the current system. Technology Director Mike Mathews says they could install their own system which would allow them to upgrade it as needed. It also prevents them from being at the mercy of a service provider.

Mathews says owning the system would also make it easier to repair or replace as needed. No action was taken by the board.

The board also received an update from County Administrator Randy Partington regarding equipment needs for Reno County Rural Fire District (RFD) 4 in Arlington. A recent test on equipment showed that the two aging trucks in their fleet need replaced.&nbsp;

The RFD will be back before the board in the next week or two asking to use some capital reserve funds to purchase one new and one used pumper truck.

Co. Commission approved HVAC purchase

Kan. — Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded $49,192 to seven nonprofit organizations in its most recent round of Fund for Hutchinson grants.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Hutchinson serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. More than $3.7 million have been awarded to more than 170 area organizations and agencies from the fund.

Proposals for the grants are accepted year-round, with awards decided in March, May, July, September and November.

The following organizations received grants:

BrightHouse – $9,016: This grant will fund six weeks of salary and benefits for the incoming executive director, allowing an overlap training period with retiring the executive director, with the goal of a smooth, effective transition for staff, board and clients.

Hutchinson Symphony – $4,850: Funds will support production and marketing costs for “Playworks at the Clayworks,” an in-person and livestreamed event featuring four new Hutchinson Symphony ensembles playing a variety of pieces in order to provide Hutchinson and Reno County a unique, quality musical experience.

Interfaith Housing and Community Services Inc. – $13,576: Funds will contribute to the purchase and installation of a new sign, reflecting the agency’s recent name change and making the building easier to find for clients, community partners and donors, and will also cover replacement of a section of windows on the building.

Plainview Mennonite Church-JAM Program – $8,500: Funds will be used to help with projects that will improve the efficiency and operations of the former Partridge Grade School building, which the church recently purchased to expand capacity to serve youth and their families in southwest Reno County.

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Reno County – $6,250: Funding will support administrative and marketing costs for the Bigs in Blue project, which focuses on recruiting, training and matching Hutchinson and South Hutchinson police and Reno County Sheriff’s officers as mentors, building not only trust among youth, their families and the mentoring officers but also strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Kansas Food Bank Warehouse Inc. – $5,000: Grant will support the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which distributes backpacks free-of-charge on Fridays during the school year, providing students with food for the weekend and allowing students to return to school on Monday feeling less anxious, healthier and more prepared to learn. Nine elementary schools in Hutchinson and seven additional schools throughout Reno County participate in this program.

Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community – $2,000: Grant will fund the purchase of iPads, allowing access to TeleMed, which has become a necessity if patients, staff and other community members are to remain safe during COVID-19. Telemedicine removes the need for residents to leave the retirement community and risk exposure to illness, and it also eliminates wait time, transportation costs, staff time lost because of travel with clients, and the potential necessity for quarantine time because of exposures.

Foundation awards more than $49,000 in grants

Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson City Council appeared to coalesce around the idea of a park patrol as a solution to vandalism and other issues surrounding parks throughout the city on Tuesday.

"We're so spread out," said Police Chief Jeff Hooper. "We have 24 square miles in the city, so it's a spread out city anyway and then you throw something like Orchard Park out there and so its hard to get the extra patrol there. Carey Park, we're in there a lot. Any time we take somebody to the jail, the officers drive that route and drive through there. There's a lot more police presence there."

One concern of the council was being sure that city resources are not disproportionately used for one area of the city over another. That's part of the reason Director of Parks and Facilities Justin Combs presented the idea.

"They are part-time employees," Combs said. "We're not into it for a ton of money at that point. There are some salaries there, but again, there are no benefits or anything like that, so that might be an easy first step. If that doesn't work, then maybe we look at something a little bit more harsh."

"We already have a system in place," Hooper said. "We already have a unit. We have the PSA program already. We have a vehicle for them already. We would just have to add a couple extra personnel. Most of the people that are involved in that program are college students at HCC or Sterling that are in there. Basically, it's a training and mentoring program. We've hired three of them out of that program for officers. We would have to hire specific PSAs for this task that worked part time but worked every night."

Hooper believes it would cost around $25,000 a year to get this done if it were done year-round. He has that money in his budget for the next couple of years and he said, if the council approved the idea, it could get started within a month or a little more depending on how quickly they could hire the part-time help.

Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Mike Folks said Tuesday that even though Reno County is in the yellow for its school gating criteria, that doesn't change the learning model in USD 308 yet.

"Here in 308, we would go to a hybrid model when we are in the orange category," Folks said. "If we were to transition to the red category at that time and that time only, would we be fully remote and that would shut down our activities. There's some other districts that they might be hybrid when they go to yellow instead of orange. There's a great deal of autonomy within the districts."

Despite the efforts of the Hutchinson Clinic and the Reno County Health Department to spread testing more widely, the threshold has still not been reached to use positive test rate as the metric for the color choice. The districts remain using the 14-day new case count as their metric.

"We get preliminary numbers on Wednesday," Folks said. "Then, we get an update on Friday morning and the Reno County superintendents along with our medical team and Reno County health team, we have a Zoom meeting on Friday morning at 9:00 and we look at those numbers and then we decide where we're at, you know, what category and then we try to get an email out to our staff and to our parents by 11:00 or 11:30 on Friday and that would be active for the following Monday."

The number as of last Friday was 67 new cases in 14 days, down from 78 the week before. The positive test rate was also down to 7.3% as of September 11.

"We've just had a very good start to the school year," Folks said. "Compliance on the new regulations and changes are very apparent. I think our students are very appreciative, as well as our parents, to be in school. There's a great deal of engagement."

It is the district's goal to communicate with parents as soon as they have information and are able to verify it.

USD 308 still using 14-day case count to determine open level

Hutchinson teachers <a href="https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1DENQ5U83Y9L4?ref_=wl_share">Brett Arndt</a> and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2JST84PO1T086?ref_=wl_share">Mackenzie Black</a> have been chosen to be recipients of a new program called the Country Music Teacher Classroom Initiative started by Hutchinson native and recording artist Jake Gill.

The Country Music Teacher Classroom Initiative is designed to provide teachers with classroom supplies and project funds across the United States.

Teachers create a wish list of desired items for their classroom and project materials needed throughout the year.  This list is distributed weekly on social media as part of country musician Jake Gill’s ongoing initiative to serve children and now teachers throughout the US and the world.  Items can be purchased by anyone in the world and delivered directly to the selected teacher.

Mr. Arndt is a middle school teacher and Mrs. Black is a 1st grade teacher in Hutchinson. “Teaching is my passion and I am fortunate to be teaching in a building that I love with colleagues I adore! This year has thrown a few curve balls our way, but it has been amazing watching the school and community rally together. I would not want to be in any other profession right now! I know this is where I am meant to be and can't wait to see what this year brings for my students and I", said Mrs Black. 

Mr. Arndt adds, “I love teaching because of the impact I have the opportunity to make everyday. My goal is to teach my students skills that will benefit them in the future including employability and personal/emotional regulation. While they learn to read, write, and figure math problems, skills that are important, the "people skills" are also important to being well rounded. The kids from my class will be leaders and will be able to advocate for themselves when they become adults. They will be productive members of society and be involved in their communities to the fullest extent. I love teaching because I can start this process and get them as far along as possible. When my students leave my classroom they are not saying "goodbye", they are saying "See you later". My favorite part is seeing what they do after they leave my classroom and seeing the skills I taught them in use in their communities. I love my job and enjoy coming to work everyday to see my students grow and become amazing and awesome human beings!”

In addition to classroom supplies and project funding, Mrs. Black’s and Mr Arndt’s  classes will also receive a song writing session with Jake Gill via personal visit or Zoom video.  Students will be able to select a topic of interest and together as a class, write a song that will be shared with their school and community.  Jake believes that song writing can help stimulate the creative dimensions of a child and provide a healthy emotional environment of expression.  “Song writing combines the therapeutic benefits of music with the creative release of bringing our thoughts to words. Today’s child is experiencing more stress and trauma daily, than in times before.  To be able to express their thoughts and feelings in a healthy manner, is crucial to a thriving development.”

Gill's next concert in Hutchinson is Sunday afternoon at Royals Bar and Grill at 2 p.m. to benefit the Salt City chapter of Guardians of the Children.

Hutchinson teachers recipients of Country Music Teacher Classroom Initiative

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School senior William Jackson has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Jackson, son of Dr. Kory and Amanda Jackson, brings the number of district students to receive the honor to 58 since 1981. Both of his parents are HHS alumni.

&nbsp;In addition to being named a National Merit semifinalist, Jackson also scored a perfect 36 on his ACT test. Only 1,598 of 1.92 million – 0.195 percent – students for the class of 2021 who took the test earned the perfect score.

The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability. To qualify, students had to take the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. More than 1.5 million juniors took the test last fall from about 21,000 high schools nationwide.

Out of the 1.5 million students who took the test, approximately 16,000 semifinalists were named.

To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance.

HHS Student named National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department wanted to stress to the public to become part of the COVID-19 community-wide testing. The testing started two weekends ago in an effort to get a better idea of the actual positive test rate for the pandemic.

The testing is free and open to the public Sept. 19 and 26 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or the first 250 tests conducted.&nbsp;

The testing will be conducted at the Hutchinson Clinic 2107 Building driveway. To qualify for testing, you need to be a resident of Reno County, be asymptomatic, not be a direct contact of someone that has COVID-19, have not tested positive in the last 90 days to COVID-19 and have not been tested in the last 30 days.

The Health Department urges the public to continue to be vigilant by washing your hands, social distance by at least six feet or more, wear a mask when you are in public places and stay at home if you are not feeling well.&nbsp;

It is very important that people continue to follow the guidelines to help decrease the spread of COVID-19.&nbsp;

Community-wide COVID testing available next 2 Saturdays

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Negotiations are underway between Hutchinson USD 308 and its teachers. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Rick Kraus says the first meeting is always brief.

“What we do is just exchange language and ask clarifying questions and then set the next meeting,” Kraus said. “It’s just a chance to make sure we understand what the other side is asking.”

With the pandemic keeping things in a state of uncertainty, the contract may need to have some flexibility for any necessary change.

“I think there is some room for conversation,” Kraus said. “We need to give careful consideration for language that will update the contract that may be in there for a long time. So I think there is an opportunity for dialogue and conversation.”

Kraus admits that this negotiating session will have some unknowns with the ongoing pandemic.

“It’s all so new and certainly there's a lot of grace and collaborative work that needs to be done in order to make sure we’re doing the right thing for kids,” Kraus stressed. “None of us have ever experienced what we’re going through.”

The next meeting between the two sides is set for Sept. 28. Kraus says the district will have its official student headcount by then, which should bring some of the financial numbers into focus.

First negotiation session held with teachers and USD 308

NEWTON, Kan. — The Harvey County Commission voted unanimously to extend a local order requiring face masks be worn in Harvey County through Oct. 19 in a continued effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This is the second extension of the local face mask order. The commission implemented a local order beginning July 15 and extended it on Aug. 11.

The face mask order requires individuals to wear a face mask over their nose and mouth in any indoor or outdoor public space where social distance of 6 feet cannot be maintained at all times.

Exceptions for wearing a face mask remain in the order, such as children 5 years old and younger, individuals that are deaf or hard of hearing, and individuals with a medical condition, mental health condition, or disability that prevents them from wearing a face cover.

Face masks remain required inside county government facilities.

The commission also voted to remain in the Phase Out guidance of the Harvey County Health Reopening Plan. The plan does not restrict mass gathering limit size.

Coffee at the Cosmo this Thursday

Kari Mailloux with HEAL Reno County spoke to the Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday about a new grant period that they are entering with money from Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

"We have just been awarded phase two, which is the next four years," Mailloux said. "That will bring another $400,000 total to Hutchinson and Reno County. This time, the pathways are framed around the social determinants of health. We're taking a different approach this time and we're asking that question, what about health, in terms of our environment and our situations that we're in and really taking an equity and neighborhood approach."

The social determinants of health are community and social context, neighborhoods and physical environment, food, health care, education and economic stability.

"We're really eager to get the input from residents of Hutchinson and Reno County on the things that they feel are important to the health of our community and the things they have a passion to get involved in," said Adam Stewart, Pathways Grant Coordinator. 

The first of those meetings is Tuesday afternoon at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center's pavilion at 4 p.m. The goal is to improve access to healthy eating, active living or tobacco cessation.

HEAL Reno County working on new grant ideas

Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper announced to the City Council a new initiative for his department related to commemorating the deaths of those who have passed in the line of duty on the department.

"Today is the 48th anniversary of the date that Officer Kenneth Kennedy was killed in the line of duty," Hooper said. "Forty-eight years ago today, Officer Kennedy put on a uniform, kissed his family goodbye, walked out his front door to serve this community and he never returned home."

Hooper doesn't feel commemorating those officers sacrifice during police officer memorial week is enough.

"September 15 and also July 2, which is the date that Reason Sherman Monroe died in the line of duty, will be days dedicated specifically to those officers," Hooper said. "The day will be filled up with gestures that memorialize that and appreciate their call to service. All the officers today are wearing the memorial band in honor of Officer Kennedy. Every shift that comes on today, before they go in service on the street will hold a moment of silence in his honor and then we're also doing two all radio call broadcasts."

Hooper asked the community to thank the officers that are on the street for their service today and the sacrifice they make as they leave their families at home each morning to protect the city.

On Monday the Hutchinson USD 308 School Board gave staff the green light to pursue a tentative plan that would help low-income district families who do not have home internet get high-speed access.

The plan will use federal and state pandemic grants as well as grants from local groups and foundations.

The Board also approved contracting with Apptegy to provide communication services to district staff and families. When implemented, Apptegy will replace the current SchoolMessenger service for calling and emailing parents.

Additionally, it will provide an updated district website, provide an app to parents and staff and provide automated calls, texts and push notifications via the app.&nbsp;

Chamber breakfast set for Wednesday

A Pretty Prairie woman will be running the Kansas leg of a nationwide event called 50 for the Cure on Tuesday. Misty Cavanaugh is the Kansas proxy for Sharael Kolberg.

A breast cancer survivor, Kolberg is on a mission to log 50 miles, in 50 days, in all 50 states, to celebrate her 50th birthday and support breast cancer awareness.

“For my 50th birthday, I wanted to do something BIG,” Kolberg says. “Since I love to travel, I came up with the idea of traveling to all 50 states during the year of my 50th birthday. But that didn't seem like enough. I also wanted to combine it with giving back. So, since I was a runner before I got cancer, I thought I could do a one-mile run in each of the 50 states - for breast cancer awareness – and invite others to join me.”

Kolberg decided to partner with Susan G. Komen to provide resources on detection, diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. According to Susan G. Komen, more than 270,000 women and men in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and more than 42,000 will die. With early detection (stage I), survival rates can be 98 percent or higher.

Kolberg started mapping out her journey across the U.S. She planned to visit places she’s always wanted to see, picking the cities (or national parks) she wanted to run in and the dates she would do her runs. Then the Coronavirus hit!

“In order to keep others, and myself, safe, traveling was off the table,” Kolberg says. “So, I came up with the idea to partner with one person in each state to run or walk together virtually via Zoom.”

Kolberg will run one mile in her hometown of Laguna Beach live via Zoom with a person from each of the 50 states - that will total 50 miles for her. Her journey began on Aug. 11, 2020 - her 50th birthday – and will end on Sept. 29, 2020, leading up to Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is in October.

“In a way, pivoting my plan has some upsides. I’ll be able to meet someone from each state…even if it is only online,” says Kolberg. “And I will get to see their state (virtually) and get a glimpse of where they enjoy running.”

Supporters can run along with Kolberg live via Zoom from their own neighborhoods - or watch and support from the comfort of their couch. A calendar of when and where her runs will take place is available on 50fortheCure.org.

“I’d love to get as many people as possible to sign up to join me virtually to support my cause to help spread breast cancer awareness,” says Kolberg. “For those who are currently struggling with breast cancer, I’ve been in their shoes. I’m doing this to give them hope that they can soon be in my shoes – out running again!”

Cavanaugh's mile will be from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Misty Cavanaugh is the Kansas proxy for Sharael Kolberg.A breast cancer survivor, Kolberg is on a mission to log 50 miles, in 50 days, in all 50 states, to celebrate her 50th birthday and support breast cancer awareness.“For my 50th birthday, I wanted to do something BIG,” Kolberg says. “Since I love to travel, I came up with the idea of traveling to all 50 states during the year of my 50th birthday. But that didn't seem like enough. I also wanted to combine it with giving back. So, since I was a runner before I got cancer, I thought I could do a one-mile run in each of the 50 states - for breast cancer awareness – and invite others to join me.”Kolberg decided to partner with Susan G. Komen to provide resources on detection, diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. According to Susan G. Komen, more than 270,000 women and men in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and more than 42,000 will die. With early detection (stage I), survival rates can be 98 percent or higher.Kolberg started mapping out her journey across the U.S. She planned to visit places she’s always wanted to see, picking the cities (or national parks) she wanted to run in and the dates she would do her runs. Then the Coronavirus hit!“In order to keep others, and myself, safe, traveling was off the table,” Kolberg says. “So, I came up with the idea to partner with one person in each state to run or walk together virtually via Zoom.”Kolberg will run one mile in her hometown of Laguna Beach live via Zoom with a person from each of the 50 states - that will total 50 miles for her. Her journey began on Aug. 11, 2020 - her 50th birthday – and will end on Sept. 29, 2020, leading up to Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is in October.“In a way, pivoting my plan has some upsides. I’ll be able to meet someone from each state…even if it is only online,” says Kolberg. “And I will get to see their state (virtually) and get a glimpse of where they enjoy running.”Supporters can run along with Kolberg live via Zoom from their own neighborhoods - or watch and support from the comfort of their couch. A calendar of when and where her runs will take place is available on 50fortheCure.org.“I’d love to get as many people as possible to sign up to join me virtually to support my cause to help spread breast cancer awareness,” says Kolberg. “For those who are currently struggling with breast cancer, I’ve been in their shoes. The COVID-19 outbreak at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility appears to be under control.

According to the latest information from the Reno County dashboard at the end of the day Monday, just one case remains connected to the prison and one connected to Hutchinson Community College.

The overall case count for the county is down to 61, from over 100 over the weekend.

Of the 841 cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, 777 have recovered. Three have died.

7,762 total tests have been administered, with 6,921 negative for a positive test rate of 10.83% overall, but just 7.14% in the community. 12.35% of the population has been tested. 

The dashboard notes just two hospitalizations.

Prison down to just one case of COVID-19 as of Monday

RENO COUNTY — An arrest was made after a hit and run accident in Reno County Monday afternoon.

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, just after noon, deputies were dispatched to 4th Avenue just west of K-96 for an injury accident. A witness told them a brown Ford F150 was northbound as the witness was southbound. The witness saw the truck do a U-turn and go down the southbound off ramp. 

The truck did not stop at the stop sign and struck another vehicle driven by a Sterling woman and continued East on 4th and then north on Westridge before the witness lost sight of it. The truck was found at the pond just north of 11th and Bloomville. 

The driver, Jimmie Gilbert, appeared intoxicated and was arrested for DUI and other charges. The injured driver of the other vehicle was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Hit and run injures one, driver arrested for DUI Monday

ARLINGTON, Kan. — A 12-year-old was killed in a ATV/ motorcycle accident Sunday evening in southern Reno County.

The Reno County Sheriff's Department reports that two youths were riding a four-wheeler and a dirt bike in the 20000 block of West Pretty Prairie Road south of Arlington when the two collided just before 5 p.m.

Deputies on scene assisted other first responders with lifesaving measures until Reno County EMS was on scene and able to transport the victim to the hospital.&nbsp;

Protective equipment was worn by the individual and the collision was investigated by the Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;
