HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The owner of a popular local food truck is adding a permanent location in the downtown area.

Linda Chaffin with Comfort &amp; Joy will open a small luncheon in the Amtrak station at 3rd and Main.

“I’ve had my food truck going on four years,” Chaffin said. “After the train station was opened up and was for rent, I thought that would be a neat place to work out of and have a carryout.”

Hours of the new eatery are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Chaffin says the restaurant will have a variety of seasonal items.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We’ll have different sandwiches and, of course in the winter, we’ll have soups and stews and hearty meals,” Chaffin said. “I will have the ability to have a flat-top grill and a deep fryer so we can offer some different things, grilled sandwiches and things that I don’t have the ability to do on the food truck.”

Chaffin says she will continue to operate the food truck on its normal schedule and during special events as before.

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson County Community Foundation is working to assess needs in our communities that better serve our families. 

Childcare is an important aspect of raising children today. It also affects whether parents or potential parents can pursue further education, accept specific jobs or advance in a career.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the threat of freezing weather in the forecast, area residents may want to take steps to protect their young plants or gardens. Jason French with Stutzman's Greenhouse says you may want to cover some of your plants over the next few days.

“If you’re talking about things that have already been coming on, been growing outside, perennials and things like that, most of them probably won't have a lot of issues,” French said. “If it's going to be down below 28, a sheet would be a great thing.”

French says rose bushes with buds and other annuals could be at risk with the cold weather.

French says not to use a plastic sheet over your plants as it will not insulate them.

“An old sheet or light blanket, there’s a frost cloth that you can buy,” French said. “Those woven things work better than like sheets of plastic . . . they don’t provide really any insulation.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

As far as new lawns or newly-laid sod, French says that should be fine.

“The ground is pretty warm, we’re getting some nice moisture with this, so root development should be pretty good,” French said. “Probably the biggest concern would be, if there is some frost on that really green grass, don't walk on it.”&nbsp;

French says walking on new grass during frost could damage the blades of grass. They will eventually heal, but will show on your lawn for a few mowings.

The forecast is for lows to fall at or below freezing through Tuesday night.

Cold temperatures could harm young plants

Kan. — The Reno County Health Department and the Reno County Medical Collaborative is encouraging students over 16 to be vaccinated.

 Kansas is now vaccinating individuals 16 and up, vaccines do need to be age appropriate for the individual. Pfizer is for 16 years old and up, Moderna is for 18 years old and up.

This way, they would not be excluded from end of year activities like finals or graduation if they were exposed to COVID-19, as the Health Department would consider them immune for 6 months after they are 2 weeks post fully vaccinated.

Kan. — The 2021 Commencement exercises for Hutchinson USD 308 will be held on Sunday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at Gowans Stadium. In case of inclement weather, the alternative plan is to hold the graduation ceremony in the Sports Arena on the same day and time. The announcement for that change will be made no later than Friday, May 21st. USD 308 is committed to providing a graduation format that promotes the health and safety of our graduates and their families.

Each graduate will be allowed eight guests. The district will also be live streaming the ceremony for those that cannot attend or are medically compromised.

Graduates need to be at the Salthawk Activity Center on Sunday, May 23, by 1:15 p.m. to get lined up.

We are encouraging all families to wear masks and practice social distancing. Please make sure you sit at least six feet away from others in Gowans.

Graduation practice is at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 21. It will begin in the Salthawk Activity Center and move to Gowans Stadium once a few announcements are made. Practice should conclude by 10 a.m. This is mandatory for any student walking in the ceremony. Please be on time so we can end on time.

All credits and graduation requirements must be complete before a student is allowed to participate in the ceremony.

Diplomas and student awards will be distributed in the SAC after Commencement. The diploma cover received during the ceremony will be empty. Students with obligations, fees, missing books/materials, etc. will not be able to pick up their diploma.

Commencement is a dress up event. Graduates should wear long pants or other attire suitable for church or other similar occasions. Gowns and hats must be worn and decorations or other attachments/accessories will not be permitted on gowns or hats.

Family members, including children of the graduate, may not walk across the stage or be seated with the graduate during Commencement. Students may not take anything across the stage with them.

The gates to Gowans Stadium will be open to the public at about 1 p.m. on May 23. Seating is first come, first served.

To help make this a special and enjoyable event for all in attendance, please refrain from using air horns or other noisemakers. Applause is the appropriate response when your graduate’s name is read.

Please remain in the stands throughout the commencement program.

USD 308 will adhere to all state and local health guidelines and restrictions in place at the time of the graduation and practice safe, appropriate social distancing. Signs will be posted around the event. Please respect others’ right to stay safe and healthy.

Buhler, Newton students named Kansas CTE Scholars

The Reno County unemployment rate increased by a fraction in March compared to the previous month, according to the Kansas Department of Labor.

The jobless rate increased from 3.7% to 3.8%. The unemployment rate in 2020 was 3.5%.

The number of those out of work in the county was 1,125, with 771 in the city of Hutchinson. The city's jobless rate also ticked up a tenth of a point to 4.1%.

State wide, the unemployment numbers fell slightly from 3.9% to 3.8%.

Kan. — Former Detroit Tiger and Haven High and Wichita State product Andy Dirks will be in South Hutchinson Saturday for an event with Solid Rock Bible Church.

"We're going to meet at Lionette Ball Fields in South Hutch April 17 at 7 p.m.," said Pastor Lee Smith of Solid Rock Bible Church. "Andy's going to speak to us on The Game of Life, his life as a baseball player and his life as a Christian."

Dirks said he began his personal relationship with Christ just a few years ago.

"Raised in Kansas, you just assume you're a Christian," Dirks said. "You assume you have that value system instilled in you and you think you're right with God and you trick yourself, to some degree. For me, it came to a head about four years ago. I said, you know what? I'm really not a good person. I always thought I was pretty good. People liked me. I've been successful in life, by worldly standards. I didn't have a true, meaningful purpose in life. That's what I came to realize. Then, I gave my life to Jesus and the biggest thing for me was to actually do it and to mean it. I say, jump all in, go all in, jump off the cliff and trust Jesus with your life."

Dirks admits that in some respects, living in the Detroit area where he played is better for his faith.

"For me, it's actually easier, because at least people here will admit they don't know God or admit that they don't care about God," Dirks said. "I think the battle we have in Kansas a lot is everybody will say they are a Christian and never analyze their heart. At least here, they say they are an atheist. You know, I respect that more. At least they'll say I don't believe in God."

Lionette Ball Diamonds are located at 101 W. Ave C in South Hutchinson. Bring lawn chairs, the crowd will be sitting in the outfield. Andy will be speaking from the infield. Water, Cracker Jacks and cotton candy will be provided free of charge.

Former MLB player Andy Dirks to speak in South Hutchinson Saturday

On Monday, April 19 the front entrance to the Reno County Courthouse will be temporarily closed while construction crews erect a scaffold over the entrance so they can continue their work. 

 For this day only, the public entrance to the Courthouse will shift to the front door of the Law Enforcement Center at 210 W. 1st and those with business in the courthouse can then walk to their destination. 

 The plan is for the front entrance to be open again on Tuesday the 20th.&nbsp;

Reno County schools remain in the green for next week, even though the case count and positive test rate numbers are beginning to increase again.

According to the county's dashboard, the 14-day positive test rate is up to 11.1% as of April 12, with 45 new cases in the past 14 days.

The case count numbers are up as well, with 41 active cases as of Thursday.&nbsp;7,805 people have had the virus, with&nbsp;7,627 recoveries.

The Reno County vaccination numbers have been updated for the week, as well. As of Wednesday, 20,375 Reno County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. That's 32.63% of residents.

The county has had 137 deaths attributed to the virus, but just one of those has occurred in the last 30 days. Just two people are in the hospital.

The last of the major second-shot clinics at the Sports Arena for those who received their first vaccination in mid-March is Friday.

Reno County schools remain in the green for next week, even though the case count and positive test rate numbers are beginning to increase again.According to the county's dashboard, the 14-day positive test rate is up to 11.1% as of April 12, with 45 new cases in the past 14 days.The case count numbers are up as well, with 41 active cases as of Thursday.&nbsp;7,805 people have had the virus, with&nbsp;7,627 recoveries.The Reno County vaccination numbers have been updated for the week, as well. As of Wednesday, 20,375 Reno County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. That's 32.63% of residents.The county has had 137 deaths attributed to the virus, but just one of those has occurred in the last 30 days. Just two people are in the hospital.The last of the major second-shot clinics at the Sports Arena for those who received their first vaccination in mid-March is Friday.

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board met in a special session Thursday and appointed Curtis Nightingale as the new superintendent.&nbsp;

Board President Dan Schweizer says that Nightingale emerged from a very thorough search process as the right candidate to lead the School District. 

“The Board is certain in our choice of Mr. Nightingale and confident that under his leadership USD 309 will continue to be recognized as a student centered district," Schweizer said. “The input from the community and staff as a whole was very helpful to our process.”

Nightingale currently serves as the junior high/high school principal in Twin Valley USD 240 in Bennington. He is in his fifth year. Previously, Nightingale served as an assistant principal/activities director for 10 years at Pratt High School. He replaces Dr. Dawn Johnson, who becomes executive director of human resources for Hutchinson USD 308 this summer.

“Curtis is amazing, he’s very strong, he’s got a great background,” board member Jay Mitzner said following the meeting. “I can’t say enough about him. He interviewed exceptionally well.”

Mitzner says Nightingale's ability to communicate was one of his strong suits.

“He seems to have the ability to work well with everybody, but very assertive. I think he’s going to be a good fit for the district, good leader,” Mitzner said. “He emphasized good communication with the board and also the faculty.”

The district has seen a lot of division over several matters, including the failed bond issue. Mitzner, who was just recently appointed to the board, hopes changes are coming.

“I think having a full board obviously is the first step,” Mitzner said. “The district seems to have been split and it seems like we’re reaching out and things are starting to heal slowly.”

Nightingale was chosen over current Central Plains Superintendent Greg Clark. They were the only two finalists interviewed. Nightingale will begin his new duties July 1. He’ll earn an annual base salary of $120,000.

Nightingale new USD 309 superintendent

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson company is wanting to take steps to mitigate a plume of underground water pollution.

Cargill Salt on East Avenue G says it has identified a plume of chloride moving southeast from its site. Cargill is under a consent order from the KDHE to curb its movement and remove the plume.&nbsp;

Cargill will be before the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday asking permission to install a remediation well just north of the fishing pond in Carey Park. The water would be pumped from the well, then diluted before being discharged back into the Arkansas River as part of Cargill's current KDHE permit. The well would be a test bed for the project and, if successful, would be part of the cleanup plan. The well would operate until the plume is cleaned up.

City Attorney Paul Brown, Parks Director Justin Combs and Director of Public Works Brian Clennan all recommend approval by the council.

NICKERSON, Kan. — The City of Nickerson is strongly encouraging residents to attend or submit their thoughts and ideas concerning the city’s $.01 sales tax.

The tax is part of a City Council workshop Monday evening. The sales tax sunsets in 2022 and could go to a vote again in November. The tax generates about $65,000 per year and was first used to build the new community building. Since then, it’s funded numerous sewer and park projects.

The city last discussed the sales tax revenue in September of 2020 and stressed the need for public input on its future.

The workshop begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Nickerson city offices.

City of Nickerson to hold sales tax workshop Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department announced that, starting Monday, it will accept walk-ins for the COVID-19 vaccine at 209 W. 2nd, no appointment needed.&nbsp;

If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call the health department at 620-694-2900. The First United Methodist Church clinic will be administering second doses only for those who received their first dose there. The last large clinic at the Sports Arena is scheduled for this Friday, April 16. Second doses will be given to those who received their first dose there on March 15. Nearly a third of Reno County residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The health department is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. They will be administering the Moderna vaccine for anyone over the age of 18. The vaccine is free to any Reno County resident, regardless of citizen status or insurance.

USD 309 could name new superintendent this evening

CHENEY, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Cheney State Park Marina public water supply system.&nbsp;

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system caused by a water pump malfunction.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the marina indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination have been resolved according to the KDHE.

Boil water order rescinded

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie School Board approved hiring an interim superintendent during a special meeting held Thursday morning.&nbsp;

The USD 311 School Board approved appointing Mike Baldwin to the position. Baldwin takes over for Randy Hendrickson who was terminated by the board during Monday's meeting. Hendrickson’s last day was Tuesday.&nbsp;

The Board approved the hiring of Ashley Anderson as the new permanent superintendent earlier this year. She begins her new duties July 1.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works says the North Main mill and overlay project will begin Monday, weather permitting.

Crews will begin milling from 5th north to 13th Avenue Monday and Tuesday. The paving will follow Wednesday and should be completed by Friday.

North Main mill and overlay begins Monday

Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson police are still looking for a second suspect following a chase on Tuesday night that resulted in a teenager in custody on aggravated robbery charges. 

According to the Hutchinson Police Activity Report, 16-year-old Zahkye Deprell Rouse was arrested for Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Battery, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Felony Flee and Elude, Illegal transportation of liquor, Possession of a firearm under the influence, Illegal display, No proof of insurance and driving without a license.

Lt. Dustin Loepp said the incident began with Rouse and the second suspect stealing personal property from a 20-year-old man in Hutchinson. One of the suspects produced a gun in the commission of the robbery. The vehicle with the property inside was chased throughout the city before being stopped in the area of the Commerce Gardens Apartments, with Rouse driving and a second person inside. Both have now been interviewed and Rouse's passenger at the time he was stopped is not believed to be connected to the robbery.

Loepp said they are still confirming information on the second suspect, so he did not want to give an incorrect name to the Post. 

Loepp said the two suspects and the victim know each other, so there is no general threat to the community.

"April 22 is going to be the pancake feed at the American Legion at 730 W. 4th here in Hutch," said Jeremy Ehart with the Legion. "The feed will be from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. that morning. This year, it's going to be takeout only, so it's going to be a little bit different."

Instead of all you can eat, they're going to ask what you want.

"You'll come in still, you'll be able to pick out how many pancakes you want, we'll give you a couple of patties of sausage, some orange juice all the necessary condiments to go, with some silverware," Ehart said. "You can take it all out in a nice little bag."

If you bought tickets last year and still have them, those tickets are still good.

"We're going to have tickets for sale at the tournament this year," Ehart said. "If you're at the Sports Arena watching the Dragons play this year, you can buy tickets there, or we do have tickets available at the Legion Post."

The Board of Reno County Commissioners is going to begin the process of looking at burn ban regulations again after the wildfires that threatened the northeast part of the county earlier this spring.

"I feel that we certainly need to give our rural farmers the opportunity to burn," said Reno County Commissioner Ron Sellers. "I think we need to be very concise on when and how."

Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer, who is responsible for Fire District 2 in addition to the city, is ready to come to the table with his colleagues to help.

"I think we could better prepare that in what we see and what all the firefighters in the county have to deal with, there are better ways to do different things," Beer said. "I think with the county chiefs association, you've got them all there from all the districts. I'm just the city and district two. I'm just one voice of many. I think a liaison with one of the commissioners might be appropriate, to have a deeper discussion on what it takes to mitigate these things. They're getting more frequent."

There is not an offseason for wildfires any more.

"Wildfire season was typically in the spring," Beer said. "It started last December. Actually, November was the big one in Harvey County already. These things are almost year round. Even the 4th of July last year, with the fireworks, we ran a bunch of brush fires last year when it was dry in the summertime."

It's important to note that it takes massive amounts of resources to get ahead of a wildfire once it starts.

The Board of Reno County Commissioners is going to begin the process of looking at burn ban regulations again after the wildfires that threatened the northeast part of the county earlier this spring."I feel that we certainly need to give our rural farmers the opportunity to burn," said Reno County Commissioner Ron Sellers.
