HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man convicted of reckless second-degree murder in 2018 will be back in a Reno County courtroom Friday for resentencing.

Tristan Delaney entered a plea to a second-degree murder charge after originally being charged with felony murder for the killing of Norman Cushinberry. He was sentenced to four years in prison. The state appealed the sentence and the Kansas Court of Appeals remanded the case back to district court for resentencing.

The Court of Appeals stated that Judge Trish Rose didn’t provide specific reasons for departing from state sentencing guidelines.&nbsp;

The shooting happened in the 500 block of Washington when Curtis Garcia went to sell a quarter pound of marijuana. When he arrived, Cushinberry tried to pay him with six counterfeit $100 bills, so Garcia left. He later came back after a text from Delaney and that’s when the shooting occurred. Delaney was wounded during that incident and nearly died.&nbsp;

Garcia, who did the actual shooting, was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Hutchinson man to be resentenced in murder case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of COVID cases in the county continues to increase. As of Aug. 3, the number of positive cases has jumped to 118. That's 37 more cases in just the past three days. It’s the highest since Feb. 28.

Currently, there are six patients in the hospital. The death toll from the pandemic is holding at 144.

The Reno County Health Department is still holding vaccination clinics Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until noon, then again from 1 until 6 p.m. Vaccinations are also available Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon, and 1 until 6 p.m. All three vaccines are available.

COVID cases jump by 37 in past three days

The Hutchinson Police Department is going to help some more with security at the Kansas State Fair.

"During the time that the fair is not going on, the Hutchinson Police Department is responsible for all law enforcement services on the State Fairgrounds," said Chief Jeff Hooper. "We assume that responsibility. During the State Fair, traditionally, KHP then comes in and they have assumed all those duties and responsibilities for law enforcement services. We're a support agency for them, transporting prisoners and things of that nature."

A new agreement will change that a bit for this year.

"This year, the State Fair reached out to us and requested some additional law enforcement services that KHP was not going to be able to fulfill," Hooper said. "They are upping their law enforcement presence up there, specifically for some of the larger events and larger concerts and things of that nature. We've entered into a contract with the State Fair to provide those additional resources outside of what KHP can do. It's just a great partnership between the City of Hutch and the State Fair. I just wanted the council to know that we'll be participating in that function."

Hooper did not provide specifics on the terms of the contract, other than to say that the city is receiving a flat fee for its services and he expects the costs to be greater than that fee.

YODER, Kan. — Two new Hutchinson Police officers have graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Yoder.&nbsp;

Officer Kyle Danahy and Officer Robert Deleon were part of the 281st graduating class. The graduation ceremony was the first to be open to the public since March of 2020.&nbsp;

Deputy Hayden Goudy of the Cloud County Sheriff’s Office was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Shane Jager, Sheriff for Pottawatomie County.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14 week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Forced to build up its pension program, Arconic showed a net loss of $427 million in the second quarter, However, that was the only downside to what was a positive earnings release.&nbsp;

The aluminum components maker showed earnings before the pension pay in of $187 million. Sales totaled $1.8 billion which is an increase of 52% from 2020 when the pandemic and a shutdown of the Boeing 737 Max production lines left the company at a near standstill. 

Transportation was still soft for the company the past three months, but higher aluminum prices and growth in the industrial and packaging end markets helped boost the company’s bottom line.&nbsp;

The Company is updating its full-year 2021 outlook in light of the effects of increased metal prices on revenue and working capital. Arconic now expects full-year 2021 revenue to be in a range of $7.3 billion to $7.6 billion, compared with the prior outlook of $7.1 billion to $7.4 billion.

Arconic pushes ahead with positive second quarter

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tyson announced that it will require all employees at US office locations to be fully vaccinated by October 1. All other employees will be required to be fully vaccinated by November 1.&nbsp;

The requirement is subject to ongoing discussions with locations represented by unions. It would include the two Tyson plants in Hutchinson and South Hutchinson. Exceptions to the vaccination mandate will involve workers who seek medical or religious accommodation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the action taken, Tyson becomes the largest U.S. food company to require COVID-19 vaccinations for its entire workforce. Almost half of Tyson Foods’ U.S. workforce has been vaccinated and coronavirus infection rates among team members remain low according to a release from Tyson.

Meat packing plants were hard hit by the pandemic in 2020 forcing some processing facilities to shut down. The shutdown produced a scare that meat would be in short supply.

Tyson says it has hosted more than 100 vaccination events for its employees across the country and more than 56,000 have been vaccinated so far in the US. The company is offering a $200 bonus for those getting vaccinated.&nbsp;

The company says it has spent more than $700 million related to COVID-19, including on efforts to combat its spread, such as buying masks, face shields and temperature scanners, installing protective barriers and providing on-site testing and vaccinations.

Tyson to require vaccinations for all employees

Kan. — Tuesday is the National Night Out events for Hutchinson.

"Farmington Park is going to have a picnic at their neighborhood park gazebo starting at 6:30 p.m." said Adam Stewart, Neighborhood Development Coordinator for Hutch Rec. "The four neighborhoods that all converage at the intersection of 11th and Main, College Grove, Creekside, Grace Arbor and Midtown are going to have a combined block party. That is going to be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. this evening. That is going to be on Main Street in the 1100 block of North Main, between 11th and 12th Avenues." 

That block will be closed to traffic starting about 5:30 p.m. until the end of the event.

"That event is going to include food trucks, we've got an inflatable slide coming out for it, we're going to have a DJ," Stewart said. "Police and Fire Department are going to be in attendance, provided they don't have call volume that makes them unavailable at that time, plus a variety of games and things. Really looking forward to that and would like to invite the council and the general public to that event."

Heartland Credit Union will also have their Treat Trike at the event, along with information on how neighborhood members can sign up for updates.

Kan. — The economy continues to bounce back, according to a survey released Monday by Creighton University economist Ernie Goss. The Mid-America Business Conditions Index continues its stay in a range indicating very strong growth for the next three to six months, but those being surveyed aren't as confident in the long term and Kansas is lagging in one indicator in particular.

"Wage growth is not nearly as strong," Goss said. "In fact, it's ninth in the nine state region. That's simply because Kansas is adding jobs in lower wage sectors."

Goss believes the Federal Reserve is going to have to take some action, or inflation is going to be a big problem.

"They're going to have to cut back on their purchases of mortgage-backed securities," Goss said. "What does that mean? Each month, they are buying $80 billion of U.S. Treasury Bonds, monetizing the debt, buying the debt, supporting government spending. Then, they are buying $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities, which is supporting the housing market. Now, the housing market, in my judgment, doesn't need this much support and $40 billion? They need to cut back right there."

If the fed does not continue the practice, it likely will result in higher long-term interest rates, which means it would cost more to get a mortgage. How much more remains to be seen.

"You keep putting air in that bubble, it's got to go somewhere," Goss said. "It's going to ultimately go up with interest rates, higher prices and/or higher taxes."

The wholesale inflation gauge for the month surged to a record high 98.7 from June’s 98.4, the previous record high.

Goss: Inflation will be a problem if Fed doesn't act

Kan. — Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall is calling on the FDA to fully approve the vaccines that are already under Emergency Use Authorization.

"The people that have not taken the vaccine yet, maybe a fourth, maybe half of them, they said, would take the vaccine if it would receive full approvel," Marshall said.

That's not the main thing Marshall is interested in, though.

"With this Delta variant, we're seeing a lot of breakthrough on the vaccinations," Marshall said. "It's fine for young, healthy people, but, for our senior citizens, for those people at risk, they need a third booster. That's based upon multiple studies in Israel, Great Britain and the European Union, that they probably need a third booster. We can't give people that third booster, unless the FDA moves and gives that full approval."

The Senator's office cites the Kaiser Family Foundation. Kaiser says 44% of unvaccinated Americans are waiting to see the FDA grant full approval for COVID vaccines.

"This week, we're holding what we're calling stakeholder groups," said Tony Finlay with Hutch Rec. "We are meeting with the City of Hutch, two elected officials, plus the Hutch Rec Commission, two representatives from there. We'll be meeting with the YMCA next week, meeting with Boys and Girls Club, meeting with school superintendents."

The public has already been allowed to weign in with a survey that is now closed, but there will be future opportunities, as well.

"We'll be able to collect the survey data and the information we heard from those stakeholder groups and set up some public meetings this fall," Finlay said.

That will give the public an opportunity to comment on the future of aquatic facilities in Hutchinson. Dates for those meetings have not been set yet.

CHENEY, Kan. — The body of the missing person at Cheney Lake has been recovered.

Ty Freel, 48 of Wichita, was found around 7:50 this morning by a civilian who was fishing approximately 1,000 yards off the shore, according to Reno County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Lutz.

The person contacted the Cheney State Park office and said they believed they had found the missing person. Several Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks boats responded to the area and performed the recovery. Body of missing swimmer located

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— If you travel on K-96 to and from Wichita and points in between you’ll be seeing a lot of road work over the rest of the summer and early fall.&nbsp;

Work began Monday on the&nbsp; $7.8 million resurfacing project on K-14 and K-96 in Reno County and K-96 in Sedgwick County.

The project involves an asphalt overlay and shoulder widening. Work is expected to be completed around the end of October, depending on the weather. The Reno County portion will include the northbound and southbound lanes of K-14 from&nbsp; South Hutchinson south to the K-96 junction then the westbound lanes of K-96 from the K-14 junction east to the Reno/Sedgwick county line. The Sedgwick County portion will be on eastbound K-96 from the Sedgwick/Reno county line east to about Maize Road.

During the work, traffic will be restricted to one lane, and motorists should expect to slow down for the work zone.

K-96 project under way

State Senator Kellie Warren sees her electability as a key attribute in the race for Kansas Attorney General.

"I am the only person in this race who can say they have defeated two liberal incumbents," Warren said. "I have a proven track record in the legislature, at the ballot box, of winning."

Warren defeated Joy Koesten in 2018 in the Republican primary in the Kansas House before defeating Brian Clausen in the general election. She then defeated John Skubal in the Senate primary in 2020, before defeating Koesten again, who had switched parties, in the 2020 general election for Kansas Senate District 11.

"I have a proven track record of responding to issues Kansans care about and to know what those issues are and to listen to people and get those done," Warren said. "I tell you who I am and that's how I go vote and work for you."

Warren was instrumental as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee in helping get the Value Them Both Amendment on the Kansas ballot in 2022. She is one of three Republicans vying for the office currently held by Derek Schmidt. He is running for Governor.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council will meet in regular session Monday evening.

The council will hear a presentation on the 2020 audit and take action on the purchase of a pump for the waste water plant at a cost of $25,000.

Also Monday evening, the council will take time to discuss the Scott Blvd. bridge and the tax abatement from American Packaging. American Packaging is in the middle of a major expansion project.&nbsp;

The meeting will end with the reports from the mayor and the council along with department heads and the city administrator.

Monday’s meeting of the South Hutchinson City Council begins at 6 p.m. at the city offices at 2 S. Main.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— Arconic Corporation will try to keep the forward momentum going when it releases its second quarter earnings before the bell Tuesday.

The aluminum parts company was sacked in 2020 by the pandemic and the production shutdown of the Boeing 737 Max airliner.

According to analysts, Arconic is expected to report earnings per share of $0.47 compared with a loss of $0.84 per share in 2020.

Arconic saw a rebound from 2020 in the first quarter when it reported total sales of $1.7 billion, an increase of 4% from the previous year and 15% from the previous quarter. It also saw net income increase by $0.04 per share at $52 million.

Arconic operates an aluminum finishing plant in Hutchinson, mostly supporting the aerospace industry.

Arconic releases second quarter report Tuesday

BUHLER, Kan. — Enrollment for new students in Buhler USD 313 will be held Tuesday, August 3 from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Enrollment will be held at the school the student or students will attend. Parents or guardians of students will need to bring proof of residency approved by the state of Kansas along with a child's birth certificate. Students in Pre-K must be 3 or 4 before August 31. Kindergarten students must be five by that date and first grade must be six years old.&nbsp;

New student enrollment in USD 313 is Tuesday

My wife and I have had a busy summer of traveling to places both old and new, near and far. Some of the routes were committed to memory long ago while the new ones required some navigational assistance from modern mapping software.

Plugging an address into your phone and setting off on the highway is a far cry from the navigating done on family trips during my childhood. Instead of turn-by-turn directions, finding your way often included turn-back instructions, as in “We should have turned back there.”

Early August is the prime season for similar family vacations. Summer activities like sports and 4-H projects are winding down, leaving a brief gap before school starts again. Fall crops aren’t quite ripe and cattle not headed to market still have plenty of grass. It’s as perfect of time as any to get away, especially if you don’t like the heat and humidity in Kansas this time of year.

There are certainly advantages to having GPS-enabled gadgets at the ready when setting off on a new adventure, but they also come with some handicaps as anyone who’s ever been directed down a minimum-maintenance road can attest. It’s a good reminder that maps are not the terrain.

While there are a variety of options to get you where you’re going today, as a child I know of only one ruler of the road — the Rand McNally Road Atlas. The tattered copy stuffed in a pocket of the station wagon often served as entertainment on family trips. Thumbing through the collection of charts wasn’t as passive as watching the latest Disney cartoon on a screen, but it broke up long stretches of boredom and likely prevented multiple fights with my brother.

At the front of the atlas was a map of the Interstate Highway System, an enduring legacy of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It offered both clarity and distortion. In the center of it all was Kansas with New York just a few inches to our right and the Pacific Ocean a few inches to the left.

The broad perspective of the nationwide map narrowed as the pages progressed. State maps included interstates in dark bold coloring denoting their importance. Other federal highways were slightly lighter followed by state highways. At the back, cities of a sufficient size received their own detailed charts allowing me to explore the granular details of places like Chicago, New York and Miami.

Maps are fantastic tools for charting a course in the future, they’re also excellent for telling you where you are and where you’ve been. One appeal of maps is how they allow us to orient ourselves in this grand world while also taking all the complexity present in our three dimensions and simplify time, distance and terrain onto a flat surface.

This simplification allows us to recall the past, chart the future or center ourselves in the present. With modern technology, we’re always just a few clicks away from looking up the neighborhoods we grew up in or finding the perfect beach for that next vacation.

But these replicas aren’t reality. There’s no nostalgia for places you’ve never been, and the lure of daydreams is the possibility of seeing and hearing and feeling something new. For all that maps allow us to see, you’ll miss the adventure if all you do is connect dots on a page.

Hutchinson City Manager Jeff Cantrell believes a deal will be made relatively soon so that the city can gain control of the Atrium Hotel property.

"We're in the process right now of undergoing some environmental background review of the property," Cantrell said. "That's basic pro forma under the terms of the contract, something you would do with any large commercial or industrial property. We're in that process now. We're working closely with the owner of the property to bring those terms together. I think we're really at a point where everyone is on the same page with the purchase price and the terms. I think the seller would like to see it close a little quicker. That's possible if we pass some of these environmental hurdles."

Cantrell sees the deal getting done in the next few months.

"Sometime within the next 60 to 90 days, at least on paper," Cantrell said. "The big question then becomes, when do we see bulldozers in there knocking stuff down and squaring the property up? That's something that could probably be envisioned early next year, mid-spring."

The goal is to ultimately pay for the improvements with a transient guest tax increase of 1%.

Auditions for Talking Tombstones, Stage 9's fall tradition, have been scheduled for August 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We have to do the research ahead of time," said Lynsey Becher with Stage 9. "It's a lot of work getting these people researched and writing monologues for them. We write them first and we know who we're going to do and then we have to fit people into the mold."

This is the 15th year for Talking Tombstones. Stage 9 is planning to add more to the weekend, as well.

"This year, we're actually adding a whole other event called If Walls Could Talk," Becher said. "On October 23rd, on Saturday, we'll have our regular Talking Tombstones out at Eastside Cemetery. On Friday, the 22nd of October, we're actually going to have a downtown walking tour. Instead of people, it's actually going to be historic buildings of downtown. It will be a whole Hutchinson historical weekend."

RENO COUNTY —As of noon Sunday there had been no new information on the missing swimmer at Cheney Lake, according to the Reno County Sheriff's Department.

Several Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Units are working the area both on water and by land (shoreline). Also some of the area is being searched by air.

RENO COUNTY — A man who is thought to have drowned at Cheney Lake Saturday afternoon has not yet been found.

According to a release from the Reno County Sheriff's Office, Wildlife and Parks officers were called at 3:39 p.m. Saturday to the area of M &amp; M Point at Cheney State Lake for a swimmer in the water who could not be located.

Deputies and members from Cheney Fire, Sedgwick County Rescue, Haven EMS, Haven PD, District 9, and South Hutchinson PD all responded to help with the search.

The plan is to reconvene in the morning to continue the search, but the name of the potential victim is not being released.

Sheriff: Search continues for missing swimmer at Cheney Lake

The Hutchinson Community Concert Series is back for their 2021-2022 season.

"Community concerts started in Hutchinson in 1936 and had never, ever had a dark season, with the exception of 1943, when gasoline shortages kept everybody from traveling," said Shirley Hinkle Pauls with the series. "There had never been a season without community concerts."

Because the series was able to reschedule a couple of acts that were to come last year, there are seven concerts instead of the usual five.

"Normally, we have our membership drive in the spring," Pauls said. "I didn't feel like people were quite ready last spring, so we held off until now, in the middle of summer. When people started calling and saying, are we going to have concerts this year? Are you going to do this, or can we plan on it? We decided the time was right and we're in full swing right now."

"Many times students just get really pumped and excited over seeing a live performance," Pauls said. "They'll go home and they'll start practicing their band instrument or their piano or whatever diligently, without parents having to stand over them, because they've been inspired."

Friday, February 11th, 2022 - 7:30 PM David Shannon Irish Entertainer - This authentic Irishman renowned for his engaging style has been singing professionally for 25 years including some of Broadway’s most famous roles. He will be accompanied by two talented musicians a pianist and a guitarist.

Tuesday, March 1, 2022 – 7:30 PM Classic Nashville Roadshow - You’ll go on a journey down memory lane with favorite classic hits honoring the world's most beloved country greats. It's a joyous return to the glory days of country western music.

Monday, May 2nd, 2022 - 7:30 PM Crocodile Rockin’ Elton John tribute featuring Jim Witter - No matter your age Jim Witter’s Crocodile Rockin’ will shake your cage, rock your evening, get your body grooving and your jaws flappin’.

The membership drive is August 4, 5 and 6 in the First National Bank lobby at Sherman and Main in Hutchinson. Concerts are at Hutchinson's Memorial Hall.

The Hutchinson Community Concert Series is back for their 2021-2022 season."Community concerts started in Hutchinson in 1936 and had never, ever had a dark season, with the exception of 1943, when gasoline shortages kept everybody from traveling," said Shirley Hinkle Pauls with the series. "There had never been a season without community concerts."Because the series was able to reschedule a couple of acts that were to come last year, there are seven concerts instead of the usual five."Normally, we have our membership drive in the spring," Pauls said. "I didn't feel like people were quite ready last spring, so we held off until now, in the middle of summer. When people started calling and saying, are we going to have concerts this year? Are you going to do this, or can we plan on it? Hutchinson Community Concert Series announces upcoming season

Mann, Wyatt and Tanksley Injury Attorneys and the Crusader Diamond Club are presenting a concert August 13th as a fundraiser for the second straight year.

"It is the Red Dirt and Diamonds Music Fest," said Bre Beals with the Crusader Diamond Club. "It takes place in Buhler just east of the Wheatland Baseball Complex."

The August 13 event will raise money for short and long-term projects for the Buhler baseball program.

"Our long-term goal is to build an indoor hitting and fielding facility for the baseball team," Beals said. "That's our big pie in the sky. The short-term goal is to add some bullpens out there at Wheatland ballpark to give the boys some place to warm up during the games."

In addition to performances from Paramount and Mountain Deer Revival, there will be food trucks available and coolers are permitted.

"You can buy your tickets in advance," Beals said. "We do have them available on the Buhler Crusader baseball page. There's a link there. There's also a link on the Red Dirt and Diamonds event page on Facebook. You can also go to Eventbrite and type in Red Dirt and Diamonds and you can buy your advance tickets there. They are cheaper if you buy them in advance. It's $25 for adults and $15 for students who are 7 and older."

Tickets will be $30 for adults and $20 for students at the venue the night of the concert.

NICKERSON, Kan. — Needing to take care of several personnel matters, the Nickerson USD 309 School Board will meet in special session on Monday.

The board will go over several classified and supplemental hirings and resignations during the meeting. The board will also go over several licensed hirings for the district.

Monday's meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the district offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave., just west of Fun Valley.

USD 309 board to hold special meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;A three car accident in Hutchinson ended up with one of the vehicles hitting the Planet Fitness building Saturday morning.

According to the Hutchinson Police activity log, officers and EMS were called to 3rd and Plum just before 11 a.m. where 86-year-old Connie Hathaway of Hudson's vehicle struck a vehicle driven by 35-year-old Kaycee Neighbor of Hutchinson and then struck a second vehicle driven by 40-year-old Gabriel Nieves of Arlington. 

Hathaway's vehicle ended up striking the wall of the Planet Fitness building.
