HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Randy Regehr with Reno County Community Corrections spoke to the County Commission at their last meeting and noted that there have been some struggles in holding their offenders accountable.

"When a client comes in to court and tells a judge, you know, I'd rather just go serve my sentence, it's unlikely that the judge is going to push for reinstatement when the person is just wanting to go serve their sentence," Regehr said. "It's pretty easy because we know the client can get out of jail and just never report again."

There are many reasons for this, but some have to do with state policy.

"This year so far, our revocations are up," Regehr said. "So are our condition violation revocations, those people that are getting revoked and don't have new charges. One of the factors we think plays into this is just reduced sanctioning options. People that were assigned after July 2019 are no longer eligible for the 120 or 180 day prison sanction."

Regehr said 45% of the Reno County revocations either asked to serve their prison sentence or did so as part of a plea agreement.
