HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the holidays approaching there is a way to get a few ideas for the shopping season and at the same time help local agencies.

The United Way of Reno County will hold their Shop Local, Give Local event on November 9th. The event will have 12 local boutiques and stores that you will be able to enjoy shopping from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall.&nbsp;

Attendees will be able to enjoy a fashion show, appetizers, door prizes and time to enjoy connection with others. Tickets are $20 prior to the event or $25 at the door. The boutiques will be donating a portion of sales to United Way of Reno County.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson City Council heard a presentation at their last meeting from the South Central Kansas Economic Development District.

"Really, SCKEDD's considered the premier housing grant writer and administrator in the state of Kansas," said Bill Lampe, Program Director for SCKEDD. "We do, obviously, the inspections and really kind of, walk the process all the way through. Through the most recent years, Hutchinson and SCKEDD have really developed great partnerships with those funding partners at Topeka. We really just appreciate working with the community."

SCKEDD is making an effort to innovate, rather than just be a pass-through entity.

"SCKEDD has created some seed money of our own that is not federally backed," Lampe said. "What we're seeing is there's some blighted properties and abandoned properties that don't qualify under federal programs, because they are not occupied by tenants and that's typically what makes them eligible for federal grants. We've been working with people in your zoning and code enforcement and these kind of things, to find these properties that are kind of falling in the gaps, where SCKEDD can come in and potentially turn those properties back into occupiable homes for low income families."

SCKEDD also expects more government money to be coming soon.

"There's additional grants that will be coming out after COVID," Lampe said. "We're seeing broadband grants and additional resources for housing that we're confident are going to be coming out. We know that housing is a big direction that Hutchinson wants to continue to push toward. I really just want to say that we enjoy our partnership with Hutchinson and look forward to future relationships."

Reno County commission chair Ron Hirst and Jackson Swearer, SCKEDD board member, both spoke to what SCKEDD has done in recent years to help in both Hutchinson and Reno County, as well.

SCKEDD continuing work to improve housing in Hutchinson

The unemployment rate in Hutchinson dropped a percentage point in the last month.

"We're trending in the right direction," Teufel said. "What that means, though, when you get to 3.5% unemployment is, we're almost at full employment. It's tougher than ever and so companies have to work harder and harder to try to fill their open positions."

"Ringing bells is coming up soon," said Maj. Paul James with the Salvation Army. "We're going to be starting that on the 20th. We also need volunteers for the toy shop and for Christmas baskets. There's a lot of things that takes a lot of manpower to make happen."

The need has been both constant and large this year.

"It's been pretty hectic, just with the need for rent and utility assistance," James said. "We spent about $46,000 over our budget, which is amazing, mostly because people were generous enough to help us to do that. We're excited to be able to do that. It's been really busy."

Throughout November BW radio's Project Concern fundraiser continues. Project Concern helps with getting Thanksgiving assistance for families in Reno County. The screening process for receiving families this year is online.

"Because of COVID, we've switched over to that," James said. "It's more convenient for everybody. We don't have long lines of people waiting to fill out papers and then show documents and then us to type it all into the computer. This year, again, we'll be doing it all electronically."

The easiest way to apply for aid is through links at their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/tsahutchinson/">Facebook page</a>.

To donate, bring checks for the Salvation Army to the Eagle Media Studios at 825 North Main during regular business hours, make them out to the Salvation Army and put Project Concern on the subject line.

"We have over 100 business member exhibitors that day," said Marci Kauffman with the chamber. "I am super excited, one, to gather the tribe and two, to really showcase what our members have and offer in our community. I know many will be surprised at what all we have here and I encourage everybody to attend. It's free. From 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., it is open to the public and we have two buildings, Sunflower North and South. We have many door prizes being given away by the vendors exhibiting."

There will be opportunities for businesses to learn more about how to operate in the 21st century economy, too.

"We also have a few sponsors and other members that are going to give presentations from our Sunflower North stage during the day," Kauffman said. "We'll cover topics like, there's an app for that, cybersecurity, engaging to retain employees and marketing principles."

First Chamber Ignite! Expo coming up today

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;As we move closer to the end of your journey through The Decades, many exciting things are happening in Hutchinson. The city became home to one of the premier sporting complexes, which many would soon copy. It also saw the beginning of a major expansion of a humble museum that would make it one of the premier collections of space artifacts in the country. The Decades: 1980s coming this Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of active COIVID cases jumped by 37 since Monday, forcing Buhler USD 313 to go to remote learning at one building and implementing restrictions at another.&nbsp;

As of Thursday, the active case count stands at 217, up from 180 on Monday. The number of new cases has increased by 75 since Monday.&nbsp;

The total case count is now 10,691. Just under 50% of the residents in Reno County have had at least one vaccination as the health department prepares to begin vaccinations for youth on Monday. The death toll stands at 169, or 1.5% of those who have contracted COVID. There are currently four hospitalizations in the county.

BUHLER, Kan. — Following a special meeting held Thursday afternoon, the Buhler USD 313 School Board voted to have Buhler Grade School go to remote learning.&nbsp;

On Friday, Nov. 5, BGS staff will have a professional learning day to organize materials and devices for student pickup. Starting Monday, Nov. 8, Buhler Grade students will be learning remotely through Friday, Nov. 12. All students will return to school on Monday, Nov. 15, for in-person instruction.&nbsp;

As of Thursday, Buhler Grade School currently has 22 positive COVID cases with 6 more cases pending. The district says it planned for this scenario and is ready to quickly make this transition. Parents or guardians will be receiving more information via email regarding remote learning, device distribution and school lunches.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Again, students will not be reporting to Buhler Grade School starting tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 5. Information for your child’s Remote Learning school day and technology pickup will be shared via email.

Buhler Grade School going to full remote learning starting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare Systems announced Thursday that Weston Tallman has been hired as Assistant Controller for the Finance Department.

Tallman grew up in Hutchinson and is a 2004 graduate of Trinity Catholic High School. He attended Hutchinson Community College before graduating from Friends University in Wichita. Tallman’s accomplishments include bachelor's and master’s degrees in Business Administration.

Tallman joins HRHS following 13 years with Kroger Accounting Services in Hutchinson. During his last 18 months with Kroger, Tallman served as the Kroger Unemployment Claims Manager.

Duane Miller, Chief Financial Officer for HRHS, said the selection process to fill the vacancy of Assistant Controller was shortened when an applicant already residing in Hutchinson, and imminently qualified, applied. “We are gratified that Weston has chosen Hutchinson Regional as the next stop in his career advancement,” Miller said. “In his most recent position with Kroger, Weston developed a department which converted work from all Kroger locations. This provided additional jobs in the Hutchinson community.”

In his position as Assistant Controller with HRHS, Tallman will be responsible for devising and implementing financial policies and plans, coordinating preparation of the annual budget, and coordination of monthly and annual financial statements.

Tallman and his wife Lacey are the parents of two children, a son Jace and a daughter Ricki.

Tallman named Assistant Controller at HRHS

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann led 10 of his colleagues to introduce the Truckers Responding At National Shipping Ports Overcoming Retail Turmoil (TRANSPORT) Act, which would require the Secretary of Transportation to relieve congested ports during either a national state of emergency or when ports are congested by 50 percent or more.&nbsp;

The TRANSPORT Act would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue federal grants from unused relief dollars to motor carriers to transport goods from a port of entry to a destination point. It would also temporarily waive operating standards should those standards be more stringent than the federal standard, allowing U.S. Department of Transportation compliant trucks and drivers from other states to relieve ports and transport goods across the country.

California’s policies like AB-5 have made it more difficult for truckers to come into the state – which has only made this supply chain crisis worse. Those supporting the bill say allowing more trucks that comply with federal regulations to come into California will help alleviate the bottleneck.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Siemens Gamesa will release its fourth quarter and year end earnings reports on Friday.

SG showed a loss of $179 million in the third quarter. Despite a strong backlog of orders things may not be any better this quarter. A slow down in the supply chain last month forced SG to implement rolling furloughs at the Hutchinson nacelle facility. The furloughs are expected to continue through the end of the calendar year. The company has also shut down production altogether at times during the furloughs due to a lack of components

With so many unknowns, the company lowered its year end projected revenue to between $12 Billion and $12.4 billion.

Hutch Post was provided a list Thursday morning of the employers who had provided employee estimates to the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce that would put them over 100 total employees. 

These employers, therefore, would be under the new OSHA vaccine or testing mandate language released by the Biden Administration Thursday, with intent for the temporary rule to be published in the Federal Register on Friday.

The employers include, but are not limited to:

This is by no means an exhaustive list, as there are several employers with under 100 employees here in Reno County that would have over 100 if you count all their locations across the country.

"We've been doing this," said Mike Smith with the church. "This is our fourth time that we've done this. We started in 2015. We do it every other year, because we've had such great support, we've been able to stretch it over two years, instead of having to do it every year."

There will be some great food at the benefit, starting at 6 p.m.

"We're going to have smoked pork loin again, everybody's welcome," Smith said. "It's a freewill offering. They really don't charge anything, just a freewill offering. I think we're going to have green beans and I know last time, we had some homemade rolls. I don't know if we're going to have that again or not, but they were really good and pie. We always have pie and we have homemade ice cream for dessert."

There are also some of those legendary Abbyville pies on the silent auction going on during the dinner, plus there's a live auction at 7:30 p.m.

"We've got several things on here, we've got a chainsaw and a leaf blower, two pork halves, we've got a party for ten with food and game tickets at The Alley. We've got football tickets, other great farm, home and family items, alfalfa seed, an air fryer, we've got all sorts of things."

The mission of the benefit is to assist area neighbors if they have unexpected medical expenses, utility expenses or other emergency assistance.

Abbyville benefit Saturday

Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman noted that they do have one new board member after Tuesday's elections, as Robin Swanson was elected.

"The Kansas Association of School Boards offers a conference just for that," Couchman said. "We encourage the new board members to attend that and I go with them. We also ask them to come and kind of observe a board meeting, so they understand how process works. It's really important that they fit into the culture. It's just like anything. You bring somebody on to your team, right? They need to understand the culture and be a positive contributing member of that."

Any member who chooses to serve has a lot of work ahead of them, and they need to focus at the appropriate level.

"You have to trust your administration to sort of weed through it all for you," Couchman said. "These people have full time jobs. This is not their full time job. It's a volunteer position. It's not paid. You have to trust your administration to get you the material and the information that you need to make decisions. That is important. KASB always says, they love this thing that the board needs to stay in, like, the watchtower of a fire. They need to get up in the watchtower and not get down into the weeds. They do a great training on that about, that you need to stay at the 20,000 foot level. We have a great board that has been able to do that."

Couchman also thanked Monte Cross for his service to USD 313 as he will be leaving the board after being defeated by Swanson on Tuesday.

HARVEY COUNTY —The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued an Emergency Order of Suspension to&nbsp;Bright Beginnings, a daycare at 305 S. Main Street in Newton, according to a media release from the agency.

The KDHE reported they receive information related to injuries a child sustained while in care on or about October 29 and reported that the information indicates the injuries were likely the result of abuse, <a href="https://khap2.kdhe.state.ks.us/NewsRelease/PDFs/11.3.21%20-%20State%20issues%20emergency%20suspension%20of%20child%20care%20center%20in%20Newton.pdf">according to the emergency order.</a>

KDHE: Emergency order shuts down home daycare in Newton

BUHLER, Kan. —&nbsp;Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman released a message to Buhler Grade School parents Wednesday afternoon.

The active case count at that building is now 19, up 12 since last Friday, with 5 Wednesday alone. 

Because of the increased numbers, all staff and students (and visitors) will be required to wear a mask inside Buhler Grade School through Wednesday, November 17.&nbsp;

All new close contacts that may be identified in the next two weeks will not be eligible for the Stay to Learn testing and must serve the 8-day or 10-day quarantine.  This is due to being at full capacity and multiple positives coming as a result of classroom exposures. 

The district plans to&nbsp; adjust and add close contacts as numbers go down. 

All students and staff will be asked to wash/sanitize hands at the beginning of each hour. Hand sanitizer is available in every classroom and at the entrances of the building. 

Those students already in the Stay to Learn testing protocol will continue to test every morning. 

The restrictions only apply to the one building at this point.

Buhler Grade School will implement masks through Nov. 17

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department will begin offering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to ages 5 through 11 starting Monday, Nov. 8. The vaccine will be administered at the health department, 209 W. 2nd. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 620-694-2900 and selecting option 6. 

The vaccine has been found to be 90.9% effective in preventing COVID-19 in children 5 through 11. Side effects are similar to other vaccines given to children including pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle and/or joint pain, chills and fever. The long-term effects of pediatric COVID infection can be serious and last for months. If you have questions or concerns, please talk to your pediatrician or another trusted healthcare provider.

The COVID-19 vaccine is free to any Reno County resident, regardless of citizen status or insurance. The health department is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m. They are closed on Fridays. Children's COVID vaccinations available Monday in Reno Co.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Center has received the American Heart Association (AHA) Lifeline STEMI Receiving Center-Gold Plus Achievement Award for treatment of severe heart attack patients.

According to the AHA, more than 250,000 Americans experience a STEMI, the deadliest type of heart attack. A STEMI is caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart and requires swift treatment. To prevent death, blood flow needs to be restored as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication.

Hutchinson Regional participates in the AHA’s Mission: Lifeline program, which works to reduce barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks, beginning when a call is placed to 911 to EMS personnel, and continuing through transportation, treatment and discharge.

Dr. Tim Henry, who assists the AHA in overseeing selection of Gold Plus recipients, said EMTs and paramedics play a vital role in the initial treatment of heart attack patients. “Since EMTs and paramedics are the first medical point of contact, they can save precious minutes of treatment time by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals to an incoming heart attack patient.”

In a joint statement, Megan Rucker, Process Improvement/Lean Six Sigma Advisor, and Aubrey Nuss, Director of Cardiovascular Services and Outpatient Infusion at HRMC, said the national distinction reflects years of hard work by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. “Our partners in the Hutchinson Regional Emergency Department, Reno County EMS, transferring hospitals, and transferring EMS agencies all work together to provide the highest quality and timely care to our patients,” Nuss and Rucker said. “Without the valued relationships, we would not have been able to achieve a ‘Door to Balloon’ time of 63 minutes in 2020. National guidelines require that hospitals accomplish this in no more than 90 minutes and, in the case of Hutchinson Regional, we exceed that requirement by nearly one-third.”

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center annually treats approximately 2,000 heart patients and is served by three Interventional Cardiologists: Drs. Michael Hagley, Jamil Ahmed, and Costy Mattar, along with Dr. Robert Fleming, a cardiothoracic surgeon.

HRMC receives Gold Plus Achievement Award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — All of us at Eagle Radio are sad to announce that longtime BW Morning Show host and salesman Doug Morse has died. He was 78.&nbsp;

Doug was hired by the late Fred Conger in 1971 after coming to Hutchinson from McPherson and spent 44 years at BW Radio. He was sales manager and the leader in sales for the Hutchinson market for many years. Doug also hosted the morning show for 40-plus years and Wednesday’s phone forum was always his favorite day of the week.&nbsp;

Doug’s favorite hobby was fishing and, if you ever saw his desk, you would see 15 to 20-plus pictures of fishing trips surrounding his desk. Doug also was very close to his family and most of those fishing trips included the family. He spent many weeks at Table Rock Lake.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Doug worked on the morning show with well known names such as Fred Conger, Sam Jones, Barbara Withrow, George Batchelor, Bob Watson, to current members Sue Achilles, John Brennan, Rob Dreher and Max Bringle.

He handled the sales account list of many local businesses and, according to Sue Achilles — host of the Party Line and morning show — she&nbsp; never met anyone who was more loyal and cared about his clients than Doug.&nbsp;

One of our favorite morning show stories about Doug was when his wife Karon had a garage sale and Doug hated haggling over prices. There was something listed for $1 and this person said, "I’ll give you $.50." Doug looked at him and said, “I'll throw the damn thing away for that,” and threw it in the trash and left. He said Karon didn’t ask him to help with many garage sales after that.

Doug is survived by his wife, Karon, they were married 58 years. He also has three sons Mark, Rob, and PJ, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

All of us at Eagle will miss Doug and his loyalty to his job, his passion for Eagle and his sense of humor.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Galva Christian Church in McPherson.

The viewing is Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home in McPherson.

The Reno County Health Department is moving their vaccination clinic from the First United Methodist Church location back to the Health Department, 209 West Second. 

Starting Monday, November 8, the Health Department will be administering vaccines during their normal operating hours. Appointments by phone are recommended but walk-ins will be accepted as space allows. Call 620-694-2900 and select option 6 for scheduling. Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are all available, as well as the flu vaccine. More information on Pfizer vaccinations for ages 5 through 11 at the Health Department is expected later this week.

“With the holiday season fast approaching, we are strongly encouraging everyone to have their primary doses of COVID vaccine, and their boosters, if possible, along with the flu vaccine, to keep loved ones safe and our numbers down,” says Reno County Health Department Director Karla Nichols.

Those urged to get the booster vaccine include anyone age 65 and over, residents in long-term care settings, and those aged 50 to 64 years with underlying medical conditions. Persons aged 18 to 49 with underlying medical conditions and ages 18 to 64 who are at increased risk for exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may also receive a booster. It is now permitted to mix and match vaccines for your booster shot and to receive a flu shot at the same time as a COVID vaccine.

The vaccine is free to any Reno County resident, regardless of citizen status or insurance. The Health Department is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. To view vaccine availability at other sites, visit <a href="https://vaccinefinder.org/">https://vaccinefinder.org/</a>. Dillons to hold hiring event for veterans

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School students enrolled in the Jobs for America’s Graduates – Kansas (JAG-K) Program were honored on Tuesday, at a special Initiation and Installation ceremony to recognize their involvement in the program. At the ceremony, students shared their experiences and were recognized by staff with certificates. Students also took an oath stating their belief in their own ability to achieve their goals of post-secondary success.

JAG-K is an in-school, elective class that is taught by a trained JAG-K Career Specialist. This Career Specialist provides individual and group instruction in the classroom using competency-based JAG National Curriculum. The Career Specialist teaches students employability skills, career and leadership development skills and helps with academic remediation.&nbsp;

Marcus Moeder, JAG-K Career Specialist, and the overall JAG-K program at HHS were also honored with a special award for exceeding expectations for student success in the program.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County will dedicate a newly decorated Hospice House foyer and flagpole in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our nation. The ceremony will take place Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at 1523 East 20th Street in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The project is part of Hospice's participation in "We Honor Veterans," a national program established to promote collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and hospice organizations throughout the nation.&nbsp;

Hospice House opened in 2001 and for the past 20 years has provided care for numerous veterans.&nbsp;
