PRATT, Kan. — A Kansas pilot turned the sky into a canvas for a high-flying proposal, using his flight path to spell out “Will you marry me, Taylor?”

The proposal took place Wednesday, April 9, above the skies near Pratt. Terry Williamson, a local pilot flying a Beech P35 Bonanza, mapped out the message in advance and then flew the route, which took just over two hours to complete.

“I have ForeFlight, which is an app with a scratch pad where you can draw over the map,” Williamson said. “I used that to sketch the message out on the ground first, practiced it several times, and then followed the route in the air. I thought it would take 45 minutes, but FlightAware says it took two hours and six minutes from takeoff to landing.”

The flight—and the effort—was worth it.

He said his fiancée was at work at the time, which helped keep the surprise intact.

“If I did it when she wasn’t working, she’d know where I was and it wouldn’t have been a surprise,” he said.

She discovered the proposal later that day after Williamson posted a link to the flight path on Facebook.

A Nickerson man died on Sunday afternoon as the result of a single-vehicle accident in the county.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Reno County Sheriff's office said that shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, they, along with Reno County EMS and Reno County Fire District Number 3, were dispatched to Nickerson Boulevard just northwest of 56 Avenue.&nbsp; &nbsp;Life-saving measures were performed on the victim, but he was declared dead at the scene.&nbsp;

The Sheriff's Office said that 54-year-old Bruce Steocklein of Nickerson was riding his motorcycle when, for unknown reasons, the motorcycle left the roadway and continued in the north ditch before coming to rest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the Easter holiday next weekend, there are concerns for pet owners.&nbsp;Dr. Erica Miller of Apple Lane Animal Hospital talked about Easter being problematic for our pets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first issue is chocolate.&nbsp; She commented that the main thing that people always think about is the chocolate.&nbsp; The chocolate bunnies and all the candy in the Easter baskets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, "That's probably our number one call would be, well, my dog ate some of the chocolate."&nbsp; Miller added. "So if you do have that situation, do call your veterinarian. 

"They'll be able to kind of walk you through next steps, what those might look like sometimes, depending on what it is, you know, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, it could be anywhere from just a little bit of stomach upset, you know, maybe some vomiting or diarrhea, but could also be more severe for having the dark chocolate is as well." said Dr. Miller.&nbsp;

The next concern is candy.&nbsp; It used to be just a little gastrointestinal upset, but with the popularity of sugar-free candies, you have to be concerned about the pets getting into them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, "We have to be really careful about our pets getting the sugar-free candy with Xylitol. Xylitol can cause a really big drop in blood sugar in our pets, which can mean seizures and other issues."

Another concern pertains to cat owners. That concern is lilies. Easter lilies and other lilies are toxic to cats.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, " I know we've talked about it before, but lilies are highly, highly, highly toxic to cats, and we don't know what exactly in them is but anything from the pollen." " So, cats jump on the counter, up by the flowers. They're sniffing it. There's pollen that's dropped onto the counter. There they have it on their paws, and you know, we know dogs and cats groom themselves and licks, so then they ingest that pollen. But anything from the stem, the leaves, the flower and the pollen is all toxic to cats.&nbsp;

She said that she has had some cats come into the clinic that had access to lilies before, and it can cause renal failure. She said that if you are a cat family, make sure that lilies are not in your flower arrangements or home.

Easter brings concerns for pet owners

MANHATTAN — On Kansas State University's inaugural Day of Giving, Wildcats across the world shared their pride for academic programs, student success and innovative research. More than 1,600 donors invested $3.4 million in areas across the institution, supporting students, faculty research and college initiatives.

K-State Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge and celebration of everything that makes K-State special, invited the Wildcat nation to unite and share their love for the university, displaying that when Wildcats come together, we can do good for Kansas and the world.

"The tremendous outpouring of generosity we witnessed during our K-State Day of Giving reaffirms what I've always known about our university community — when called upon, our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students respond with extraordinary heart and commitment," said President Richard Linton. "Every gift represents a personal investment in our shared future and a profound belief in our mission."

Throughout the day, K-Staters supported areas they were most passionate about. Student groups, including the Concrete Canoe team, the K-State Rodeo team and the Wildcat Rocketry team, received donations empowering student engagement and learning beyond the classroom. The Global Impact in Sorghum initiative, which conducts research to improve sorghum production techniques and introduce improved seed, saw support for its mission and used social media to share its impact with audiences. The College of Business Administration rallied funds for applied learning experiences that prepare students for careers. Other significant gifts went to All Faiths Chapel and Cats' Cupboard, a vital resource for enhancing food security at K-State.

Departments across campus competed for bonus funds through various leaderboards and challenges. The College of Business Administration led the way in total dollars raised, bringing in more than $1 million, while the Cats' Cupboard engaged the most donors to secure the top spot in the participation leaderboard with 203 donors.

Online "Purple Power Hour" social media challenges fueled engagement and competition. K-Staters participated in challenges ranging from sharing their most beloved K-State tradition to sharing a K-State pet photo to unlock bonus dollars for their favorite departments. The K-State Marching Band and Cats' Cupboard each claimed two challenge victories.

While many K-State alumni and friends engaged and supported virtually via social media, at K-State's Manhattan campus, students, faculty, staff and community members were also able to play a hands-on role in shaping the success of their favorite K-State programs. At Bosco Student Plaza, they gathered to celebrate, participate in challenges and interactive activities, take photos with Willie the Wildcat and directly impact the areas they love.

"In the face of a challenge, you often hear K-Staters say, 'Where there's a Wildcat, there's a way,'" said KSU Foundation President and CEO Greg Willems. "Yesterday, K-Staters did just that. We are so grateful to each and every donor who participated in our first K-State Day of Giving. You created a brighter future for K-State and its students."

Wildcat generosity fuels students, research and initiatives at inaugural K-State Day of Giving

Trooper Ben Gardner posted on Facebook that a trooper patrolling in McPherson County cited a driver for going 101 m.p.h. in a 70 m.p.h. zone on K-61 Highway.  The post said Trooper Baldwin issued a citation to the driver on the scene.  

Gardner also said that they have received several recent reports of reckless driving in that stretch of road.  He said that the troopers are actively working in that area to help reduce risks and make the roadway safer for everyone.   

He also thanked the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office for also being out there regularly and helping control traffic in the area and promote safety.

KHP trooper writes citation for driver going 101 mph in McPherson County 

Pratt Community College (PCC) is honored to announce the receipt of a transformative gift of $4,375,000 from the Lynda Beck Trust following the passing of Dr. Lynda K. Beck of Exeter, New Hampshire.

Dr. Beck, born on May 12, 1944, in Pratt, Kansas, to Clarence and Hazel (Golden) Beck, was a trailblazer in education and a lifelong advocate for learning. After graduating from Niskayuna High School in Schenectady, New York, where she excelled academically and athletically, she earned her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Cortland. In 1972, she completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire.

That same year, Dr. Beck joined the faculty at Phillips Exeter Academy as the first female instructor in the Science Department. Throughout her career at the Academy, where she ultimately served as Vice Principal until 1998, Dr. Beck was a passionate advocate for gender equality in education, pivotal in paving the way for women in the field.

In addition to her impactful career at Phillips Exeter Academy, Dr. Beck served as a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1998-2000, was a board member of The Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, Massachusetts, and taught chemistry at Great Bay Community College.

Outside of her professional life, Dr. Beck enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and traveling the world with her beloved spouse, Susan Ratnoff, whom she married in 2010. The couple shared a love of exploration and golf and were known for their generosity and encouragement of others.

The $4,375,000 gift from Dr. Beck’s trust will be added to the Clarence and Hazel Beck Endowed Scholarship Fund, established in honor of her parents, to support PCC students for future generations. Additionally, provisions have been made for future contributions to this endowment.

“This extraordinary gift will have a profound and lasting impact on the lives of our students,” said Dr. Michael Calvert, President of Pratt Community College. “Dr. Lynda Beck’s legacy of educational excellence and student support will forever be honored at PCC. We are deeply grateful for her generosity and vision.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Easter lilies, a traditional holiday symbol of hope and purity, may not yet be done for the year.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini said that although Easter lilies are not reliably hardy in Kansas, a few simple steps can give them a chance to survive outdoors.

 <li>After the flowers have faded, remove the flower stalk so that the plant’s energy doesn’t go toward making seed.</li><li>Keep the plant inside until the danger of frost is past. Keep soil moist, but never waterlogged. Don't allow water to sit in the tray. Continue to fertilize.</li><li>The pot can be moved outside when frost is no longer a concern. Sinking the pot into the soil up to the brim and placing in dappled shade will help reduce watering. Continue to water and fertilize until the top growth dies down.</li><li>Choose a sunny, well-drained spot for planting. Good drainage is vital for lilies Incorporate organic matter, such as compost, into the soil to improve water holding capacity and drainage.</li><li>Plant the bulbs 6 inches deep and 12 to 18 inches apart and water well. Mulch to conserve moisture. New growth may appear later in the summer or the plant may stay dormant until the following spring.</li><li>Cover the plants in the fall after the foliage has died down with straw, pine needles, wood chips or other types of mulch to help protect the plant over winter. Use four inches of straw or three inches of any of the other materials.</li><li>Uncover the plants in the spring to allow new growth to appear, and fertilize according to results of a soil test.</li>

Cobble Stone has been really enjoying his time out of the shelter! He loves to sunbathe and got to celebrate one of his foster sibling's birthdays!&nbsp;

He loves to cuddle and be as close as possible when lounging on the couch. He is learning about crate training, how to share toys, and play nicely. He also got to meet some new friends! &nbsp;

He met chickens and was very curious, but decided they were quite boring. While he is enjoying his time in foster care he has been patiently waiting for his forever home. &nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather arrives and grass begins to grow more quickly.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

Dr. Erica Miller of Apple Lane Animal Hospital was on the BW Morning Show on Thursday Morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She said that there will be a new veterinarian coming to Apple Lane Animal Hospital in June.&nbsp; Dr. Logan Druker, an Inman native will join the practice following graduation in May.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Miller said, "He reached out to me and was like, hey, you know, I think I want to come back home. You know, he's got family also in the area and wants to be close to them."

This is a step to help alleviate the shortage of veterinarians in the Hutchinson community.&nbsp; One concern for pet owners is the low number of veterinarians here.&nbsp; If your pet has an emergency and you're not the veterinarian for that particular animal, you may not get seen.&nbsp;

She referenced Dr. John Austin working alone at his clinic and that VCA and South Hutch is down doctors as well.&nbsp; " We just are lacking veterinarians and only hope that all of us can get more help" said Dr. Miller.&nbsp;

Dr. Miller added that there have been times that unfortunately she has had to send clients somewhere else.&nbsp; She added that she is thankful that there are other veterinarians in town that can help out. Because in some places in Kansas you may be the only vet and three isn't another one for another 30 to 45 miles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Apple Lane Animal Hospital to welcome new veterinarian in June 

HAVEN, Kan. - The City of Haven announced that it has passed an ordinance that will allow residents to own chickens. The new ordinance takes affect on May 10, 2025. &nbsp;

The city says that before you start planning your backyard coop, make sure that you are aware of the requirements to own chickens in the city limits. &nbsp;&nbsp;

These ordinances include: &nbsp; &nbsp;• Permits: You must obtain the necessary permits from the city &nbsp; &nbsp;• Coop Standards: Standards for size placement and maintenance &nbsp; &nbsp;• Number of Chickens: No more than 6 chickens will be allowed &nbsp; &nbsp;• Roosters: No roosters will be allowed&nbsp;

Deere and Co. has filed an answer to the Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit.&nbsp; 

That's the lawsuit that alleged they have a monopoly over its repair services.&nbsp; The lawyers who are defending&nbsp;John&nbsp;Deere in federal court deny the allegations and say that it's nothing more than technological advancements.&nbsp; 

Farmers say that it creates headaches for those who want to fix their own tractors.&nbsp; Deere does offer a different repair tool to customers and independent repair shops.&nbsp; 

The FTC claims that version is inferior to the one available to authorized dealers and is allegedly incapable of doing all repairs on Deere equipment.&nbsp;
