In the past, ranchers used to worry whether people would eat beef.

That’s not a concern anymore, according to Mark Gardiner. Today, he said producers like himself are seeing the greatest demand in history.

“Beef has differentiated itself as the protein of choice, not only in the U.S., but worldwide,” he said.

The fourth-generation producer, who runs Gardiner Angus Ranch in southwest Kansas with his family, believes that’s largely because of the quality of beef consumers get today.

But even as beef prices hit record highs in May, demand does not appear to be slowing.

The average price of a pound of ground beef hit a record $5.98 in May, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s a 16% increase from a year before, and with a short supply of cattle, experts say they don’t expect prices to fall anytime soon.

The cattle inventory in the U.S. is at its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fb.org/market-intel/u-s-cattle-inventory-smallest-in-73-years" target="_blank">lowest since 1951</a>, according to USDA data.

Ranchers have shrunk their herds for several reasons; including inflation and the rising costs of caring for cattle. Drought throughout the Great Plains, where most of the country’s cattle are raised, also means higher feed costs for ranchers.

“So we are continuing to be very small and again, smaller than we intended to be,” said Derrell Peel, a livestock marketing specialist with Oklahoma State University Extension, to KOSU last February. “And that's gonna lead to growing incentives, I think, for the industry to try to rebuild and when we can, if Mother Nature lets us.”

Because producers have been seeing strong demand at high prices, Peel said they are in the driver’s seat in this market. Although high prices likely will encourage rebuilding herd sizes, he said producers have not responded so far.

When they do, it may shrink supply even further, as ranchers hold back cows to breed more calves.

“If you're not familiar with the beef industry, you don't turn this thing around rapidly,” Peel said. “Just the nature of cattle production is a slow process.”

Cortney Cowley, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, said producers are looking at their input costs and looking at the prices for cattle to make decisions on whether to sell cattle or hold them back.

“And it’s really difficult to not sell right now at the historically high prices that ranchers are seeing,” Cowley said.

Because there are fewer cattle going through the system, Cowley said meatpackers at the wholesale level are paying more for cattle resulting in lower margins. Ultimately, those high prices get passed on to the consumers, because everyone else in the supply chain has had to pay more.

At the same time, Cowley said the U.S. consumes more beef than it produces — importing meat to make up the difference — which can contribute to higher prices.

“We actually have a trade deficit for beef right now … ,” Cowley said. “and with some of the trade policies that are in effect now, whenever you have to import more beef, that can be more expensive.”

Peel said while the beef industry hasn’t been directly affected yet, he expects it will be down the line.

“I mean, “the export markets are all messed up” is not a very technical term, but there's a lot of disruption and more importantly, a lot of uncertainty about those markets,” Peel said. “But those effects don't show up necessarily immediately, at least not to a great extent, but they will continue to build over time.”

Peel said he’s more concerned about the broader economy. While demand for beef is solid, he said if consumers face factors like unemployment, demand could be impacted at some point.

For the moment, beef producers like Gardiner are taking the markets in stride.

A few years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic, he said producers had a difficult time because cattle could not get through the system while meat processing plants were shut down.

“So, it was frustrating to producers because the price that they were receiving was nowhere close to what they would see retail prices,” Gardiner said.

Currently, it’s a different story. He said producers are seeing record high prices as processors see the lows. Despite uncertainty over tariffs, Gardiner said producers are having a good moment.

“It's never been better in the beef industry, and I've been bullish my entire life,” he said, “But we have more opportunity today than any time in the history of American beef production.”

TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas' unemployment rate held steady at 3.8% in May, unchanged from April but up slightly from 3.5% a year ago, according to preliminary data released by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Reno County matched the statewide jobless rate at 3.8% in May. That’s a one-tenth of one percent increase from April 2025 and a two-tenths of one percent increase compared to May 2024, reflecting a modest softening in the local labor market.

Statewide, the labor force participation rate dipped to 67.0% in May, indicating fewer Kansans are working or actively looking for work.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas showed an increase of 1,800 nonfarm jobs from April to May. Most of the growth came from the private sector, which added 1,900 jobs, while government employment dipped by 100. Manufacturing led the way with 1,600 new jobs, while professional and business services saw the sharpest decline, losing 700 jobs.

Year over year, Kansas has added 12,500 nonfarm jobs. That includes 2,200 new private sector jobs and a significant increase of 10,300 government jobs.

The data is compiled monthly by KDOL’s Labor Market Information Division in cooperation with the BLS.

State releases May jobs report 

As summer temperatures rise and the Fourth of July approaches, a local veterinarian is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their animals from heat, stress, and potential dangers.

Dr. Erica Miller of Apple Lane Animal Hospital says the combination of heat and humidity poses serious risks for pets, especially brachycephalic breeds — dogs with shorter snouts like bulldogs, Frenchies and shih tzus.

“If you're thirsty, they're thirsty,” said Miller. “These breeds already struggle to breathe normally, and in hot, humid weather, their risk for heat stroke increases dramatically.”

Miller advises pet owners to carry water for their animals when out in the heat, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and be mindful of how long pets are exposed to high temperatures.

She also warned against leaving pets in cars, even for a short time. “Even with windows cracked, temperatures can climb quickly and become dangerous,” she said.

Another seasonal hazard? Long-haired dogs with unkempt coats. While shaving pets can help some animals stay cool, Miller says proper grooming is more important than a full shave. “If the coat is clean and unmatted, it actually helps regulate temperature. But mats trap heat and can lead to overheating.”

Miller also cautioned against grass awns — seed-like barbs that can lodge in dogs’ paws and cause painful infections. “I’ve seen several cases this month alone,” she said. “If your dog has long hair on its feet, keep it trimmed and check regularly.”

Looking ahead to the Fourth of July, Miller emphasized that fireworks are a major source of stress and danger for pets. “It’s the number one day for lost pets,” she said. “Noise can scare them into bolting from the house or yard.”

Miller recommends creating a safe space indoors, preferably in a crate or quiet room. For pets with known anxiety, she urges owners to contact their veterinarian now — not the day before the holiday — to ask about calming medications.

“Veterinary offices are often closed on July 4, and we get a flood of panicked calls every year,” she said.

She also reminded pet owners to make sure their animals are microchipped and that their registration information is up to date — especially in light of some pet chip companies going out of business. “We don’t want to chip a pet twice,” she said. “If it scans, we can help get the info transferred to a current provider.”

Ultimately, Miller said preparation and awareness can prevent emergencies. “Know your pet. Know their limits. Plan ahead — that’s the best way to keep them safe this summer.”

As Fourth of July festivities approach, the Hutchinson Fire Department is reminding residents of fireworks regulations and safety procedures during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.&nbsp;

Expanded sales period, but discharge rules Unchanged 

A recent change by the Kansas Legislature now allows year-round fireworks sales in fixed retail buildings, similar to neighboring states like Missouri and Oklahoma. For temporary retail stands—commonly set up in tents—the allowed sales period has also been extended by state law to run from June 20 through July 8. 

However, Fire Marshal Michael Cain emphasized that the discharge dates within Hutchinson remain the same: residents may only discharge fireworks from June 30 through July 4, between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. 

Cain outlined the multi-step inspection process required before a fireworks tent can open. Vendors must first secure a license from the State Fire Marshal before submitting a detailed application to the city, including a site plan, insurance, and contact information. 

“We make sure the tent is placed according to the plan, and that safety distances from buildings are maintained,” Cain said. After the structure and signage are installed, a final inspection is conducted before any fireworks can be sold. 

Once tents are open, inspectors make at least two unannounced visits per day to ensure continued compliance. 

Discharge locations and safety precautions 

Discharging fireworks is permitted only on private property, and not on public streets or in parks without a special use permit. Cain emphasized that fireworks must be used in open spaces away from structures and combustible materials, with driveways being the safest option. 

“Years ago, people were allowed to use apartment or church parking lots with permission,” he noted. “But now, without a city-issued permit, it’s strictly limited to private property.” 

Proper disposal: A must to prevent fires&nbsp;

Cain stressed the importance of safe disposal. He advised residents to soak used fireworks in water before placing them in the trash. 

“Don’t just sweep them up and throw them in the polycart. We’ve responded to house fires because people didn’t properly extinguish fireworks,” he warned. 

Fireworks stands rebounding after policy change

Hutchinson has seen a resurgence in fireworks stand applications since reinstating aerial fireworks. This year, 11 stands are approved up from a low of just four or five during the period when only “safe and sane” fireworks were allowed. 

The city also plays a role in inspecting large public fireworks displays, including the annual show at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. 

“Even though the state licenses the providers, we still inspect the site, monitor setup, and ensure safety conditions like wind are appropriate,” Dowling said. “We’ve only had to cancel once due to weather in recent memory.” 

The Hutchinson Fire Department encourages all residents to enjoy the holiday responsibly and keep safety top of mind. 

“Fireworks are part of the fun,” said Cain “We want everyone to make it through the Fourth with good memories—not a visit from the fire department.”

For temporary retail stands—commonly set up in tents—the allowed sales period has also been extended by state law to run from June 20 through July 8. However, Fire Marshal Michael Cain emphasized that the discharge dates within Hutchinson remain the same: residents may only discharge fireworks from June 30 through July 4, between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. <figure>

 </figure>“We make sure the tent is placed according to the plan, and that safety distances from buildings are maintained,” Cain said. After the structure and signage are installed, a final inspection is conducted before any fireworks can be sold. Once tents are open, inspectors make at least two unannounced visits per day to ensure continued compliance. <h2>Discharge locations and safety precautions </h2>Discharging fireworks is permitted only on private property, and not on public streets or in parks without a special use permit. Cain emphasized that fireworks must be used in open spaces away from structures and combustible materials, with driveways being the safest option. “Years ago, people were allowed to use apartment or church parking lots with permission,” he noted. “But now, without a city-issued permit, it’s strictly limited to private property.” <h2>Proper disposal: A must to prevent fires&nbsp;</h2>Cain stressed the importance of safe disposal. He advised residents to soak used fireworks in water before placing them in the trash. “Don’t just sweep them up and throw them in the polycart. We’ve responded to house fires because people didn’t properly extinguish fireworks,” he warned. <h2>Fireworks stands rebounding after policy change</h2>Hutchinson has seen a resurgence in fireworks stand applications since reinstating aerial fireworks. This year, 11 stands are approved up from a low of just four or five during the period when only “safe and sane” fireworks were allowed. <figure>

 </figure><h2>Public displays get thorough oversight </h2>The city also plays a role in inspecting large public fireworks displays, including the annual show at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. “Even though the state licenses the providers, we still inspect the site, monitor setup, and ensure safety conditions like wind are appropriate,” Dowling said. “We’ve only had to cancel once due to weather in recent memory.” The Hutchinson Fire Department encourages all residents to enjoy the holiday responsibly and keep safety top of mind. “Fireworks are part of the fun,” said Cain “We want everyone to make it through the Fourth with good memories—not a visit from the fire department.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Bird feeders are a great way to enjoy nature without leaving your front porch, and many homeowners understand the joys of seeing multiple bird species frequent the feeders.

But Kansas State University wildlife specialist Drew Ricketts said bird feeders also can attract predators and other wildlife into your yard.

For example, racoons are seven times more likely to enter the yard and deer are two times more likely if you have a bird feeder.

“Carnivores, such as coyotes and red foxes and those sorts of critters, are at least one and a half times more likely to be in yards with bird feeders,” Ricketts said.

“Folks often times are inadvertently attracting critters to the yard, and that can cause problems that don't have anything to do with the bird feeder. One of the things that I would suggest to those folks is to think about how they might be contributing to that situation by having food available in the yard.” Ricketts said.

At least once a year, Ricketts said he gets a call from people who are wanting to know how to get rid of a hawk that is hanging around their yard, preying on birds. He said there is nothing you can do because an increase in a prey species often leads to an increase in a predator species.

“Feeding birds is something people do for themselves and it might have unintended negative consequences.” Ricketts said.

According to Ricketts, bird feeders allow such predators as domesticated cats and hawks, to take advantage of the condensed hunting grounds around the feeder.

Even though we worry that birds are hungry during the winter, feeding birds may also have unintended consequences for the birds that are eating it.

According to Ricketts, birds don't need to be fed in the winter. A study that looked at birds' reproductive performance showed that birds being fed in the winter time hatched chicks that weighed less and had a lower survival rate than birds that did not have access to feeders.

Ricketts said concentrating birds in one area around a feeder can also be a hot spot for parasites and diseases. Two examples from scientific studies show an increase in diseases like avian pox and infections of lice and mites.

For those who want to keep birds coming around, Ricketts suggests washing bird feeders thoroughly every 24 hours with 10% bleach, and rinsing them well to remove the bleach odor.

Three-day weather outlook 

This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.

In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.

Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.

Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. He is only about 15 to 20 percent of the way done with harvest and has at least a week left.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Day 2, Kansas wheat harvest report

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A once-prominent name in the world of marching music is making a long-awaited return. The Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps, originally founded in Hutchinson in 1955 and absent since the mid-1990s, is back and ready to perform.

Led by longtime director and alumnus Dale Antoine, the corps is entering its second season since being revived by a group of passionate alumni in 2022. After decades of silence, the Sky Ryders are rebuilding with enthusiasm, community support, and a clear vision of returning to national prominence.

“This is our second year, but we’re calling it a rebirth,” said Antoine. “The corps was a staple here in Hutch until 1989 before it moved to Texas for a short time, and by 1994 it was gone. Now, after nearly three decades, we’re back.”

This summer, the Sky Ryders boast a roster of 78 performers, ranging in age from 14 to 21. The corps includes 28 percussionists, 36 brass and wind players, 12 color guard members, and one drum major. “We’ve got kids from all over — Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma — and they’re committed and talented,” Antoine added. “It’s a young corps, with an average age of 17, which is exactly where you want to be when you’re rebuilding.”

Though the corps couldn’t secure a competitive show in Hutchinson this season due to Drum Corps International’s tour routing, they will participate in a three-show tour in early July.

Before departing on tour, the public is invited to a free dress rehearsal performance at Gowans Stadium on Monday, July 7. Gates open at 7 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring water and enjoy a first look at this year’s show. “It’s going to be a simple run-through — no frills, just raw performance,” said Antoine. “But we want the community to see the result of the kids’ hard work before we hit the road.”

The Sky Ryders will perform in&nbsp;Ankeny, Iowa  July 9, Dubuque, Iowa  July 11 and Lisle, Illinois  July 12. 

In addition, the Sky Ryders will march in the 35th Annual Patriots Parade on July 4 in Hutchinson, marking the first time in years that the parade will feature a live marching musical group.

The comeback has been made possible through strong community support. Hutchinson Community Foundation has provided key grants, and Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College have offered facilities and housing for the corps’ rehearsals. “We’ve also had support from the local business community and even the Kansas National Guard Armory,” Antoine said. “The welcome has been amazing.”

Still, keeping a drum corps running isn’t cheap. Uniforms, instruments, transportation, and housing add up quickly. “We’ve just received new uniforms,” Antoine noted, “and if anyone out there has alteration skills, we could use the help!”

Sky Ryders in year two of rebuild

Hutchinson is trading in its name this week for one that’s a little more heroic: Smallville, Kansas. As part of the 12th annual Smallville Festival, the Salt City will embrace its alter ego and honor the fictional hometown of one of Kansas’s most legendary “residents” — Superman.

The festival, that starts this evening and continues through Saturday, celebrates the values that define both Smallville and Hutchinson — tradition, grit, community pride, and a little super-powered fun.

The celebration launches tonight at 6 p.m. with the Smallville Festival Kick-Off between DCI Park and George Pyle Park. The free event will feature inflatables, <a href="https://www.hutchrec.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/SMF-Kids-Costume-Contest-Guidelines.pdf">a kids costume contest at 7 p.m.</a>, and live performances of iconic movie scores by the Hutchinson Municipal Band. NaCl Comic Cons and Hutch Pride will also co-host a Micro Comic Con downtown.

The night concludes with the start of a DC Comics movie marathon. Attendees are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs to George Pyle Park for a free outdoor screening of Batman Begins at 8:30 p.m.

A Day for Heroes – Both Real and Imagined

On Friday, festivities turn toward celebrating real-life heroes. From noon to 2 p.m., the Reno County Museum will host a free lunch for first responders.

Later in the day, from 1 to 6 p.m., the Kansas State Fairgrounds becomes a haven for fandom with the joint Hutch Pride and Hutch Comic Con, offering more than 200 vendors, artists, cosplayers, and more — all for a $10 admission fee, good for both Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Hutchinson Zoo becomes a haven for<a href="https://secure.rec1.com/KS/hutchinson/catalog/index/8c6f2769e9488e0b50096a345d5d6d52?filter=c2VhcmNoPWZhbWlseSUyMG5pZ2h0"> "Zooperheroes”</a> from 6 to 9 p.m., with animal encounters, zookeeper talks, and a superhero-themed cookout.

The cinematic experience continues at 8:30 p.m. with a screening of The Dark Knight inside the Justice Planetarium at the Cosmosphere.

Super Saturday: Running, Racing, and Record-Breaking

The fun continues Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. with the<a href="https://runsignup.com/Race/KS/Hutchinson/MineRun5K"> Smallville 5K </a>— a unique underground run through Strataca Salt Mine. Registration is $35.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., festivalgoers can compete in the Smallville Amazing Space Race at the Cosmosphere’s Hall of Space Museum — a fast-paced scavenger hunt with prizes for those who solve all the clues.

In the evening, action shifts back to the fairgrounds. At 6:30 p.m., a free Nerf-a-Palooza will pit teams of five in open-range battles hosted by Nattox and NaCl Comic Cons.

Also at 6:30 p.m., attendees are invited to break a record during the Most Clarks in One Place Photo Op, sponsored by Specs Eyewear. Whether dressed in full Daily Planet gear or just donning free Clark Kent-style glasses, participants will pose for a drone photo on the Midway.

The festival concludes with the final installment of the movie marathon: The Dark Knight Rises will be screened at 8:30 p.m. on the Midway. Concessions will be available, and rides on the historic Ye Ol’ Mill will run beforehand for $5.

Hutchinson transforms into Smallville for super celebration of Superman

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce has named Service Plus Electrical Solutions the recipient of its June Small Business Award, recognizing the company for its dedication to quality service, community involvement, and purpose-driven growth.

Founded by Steven Brown, Service Plus was built on a straightforward but powerful belief: the experience between electrician and homeowner should be rooted in trust, communication, and respect. After years working in the field for other contractors, Brown saw an opportunity to raise the bar.

From the beginning, Service Plus set itself apart with transparent pricing, flexible payment plans, and an obsessive attention to detail—going so far as to use drop cloths and Swiffers to ensure workspaces are left cleaner than when the team arrived.

“We’re not just fixing wires,” Brown said. “We’re rebuilding confidence in what great service looks like.”

Now in its seventh year, Service Plus has grown into a six-person team, including four full-time W-2 employees and co-owners, all sharing a vision to grow with intention. Their specialty—rewiring entire homes—demonstrates not only technical skill but a commitment to preventing serious hazards before they happen.

In addition to their core services, Service Plus offers Safe Home Surveys, a donation-based walkthrough of a home’s electrical safety. Donations from these surveys go entirely to the company’s charitable program, Spread the Light, which funds a full electrical rewire for a Reno County family in need—completely free of charge.

The business also invests in its team with benefits like paid leave, career advancement support, referral bonuses, and apprenticeship opportunities through Hutchinson Community College.

Despite the common challenges facing small businesses—from hiring to economic fluctuations—Service Plus has held firm to its founding values.

“At the end of the day, it’s about taking care of one client, one home, at a time,” Brown said. “With care and excellence—that’s what we’re here to do.”

The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber’s Small Business Award is given monthly to recognize outstanding local businesses that contribute to the area’s economic vitality and community spirit.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of South Main on the east side.

In 1908, the addresses of 20-22 S. Main contained Keller Bros. Barbers and the Cover, Obee &amp; Devoss Hardware Companies.

In 1909, the Boston Store took over the entire building and was managed by Albertus Coombs. The first photo shows that store at opening at 20-22 S. Main.

Boston Companies was a lady's furnishings and dry goods corp. founded in 1897 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The second photo shows the Boston Store in 1915 during one of its promotions.

In 1923, the Boston Store moved to 112-114 S. Main and was managed by Benjamin Herr. The Boston Store flourished until 1933 when 600 of the 1,000 corporate employees walked out in a "White Collar Union Strike," which caused closure of most of its stores, including the one in Hutch.

Meanwhile, back at 20-22 S. Main, JCPenney moved to that location in 1923. The third photo shows JCPenney there in 1941.

JCPenney remained there until 1956 when it moved to 11-17 N. Main. The fourth photo shows Adams-Parker Furniture in the 20-22 S. Main location in 1971.

Adams-Parker was there from 1962 to 1995. Yesterday's Treasures was located there from 1996 to 2010. The fifth photo shows the current occupants of the 20-22 S. Main address: Sanford's ComputerWorks, owned by Sanford and Anna Yoder, who also own the building.

The Hutchinson NAACP Youth Council, in partnership with Wisdom In Motion, Hutch In Harmony, and the City of Hutchinson, proudly announces the 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration, a vibrant two-day event honoring freedom, culture, and community.

This year’s celebration kicks off on tonight at 6:00 PM at Chester I Lewis Plaza, 15 E 1st, Hutchinson, KS. Featuring opening remarks from Mayor Stacy Goss. The evening will include a Youth Talent Show highlighting the incredible talents of local youth, and a Health Fair hosted by Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, offering free health screenings and valuable community health resources. Attendees can also enjoy a variety of food trucks and local vendors.

The celebration continues on Friday, at 7:00 PM with a free community BBQ, bounce house, games for the kids, and a classic cake walk. Local vendors will return for another evening of connection, celebration, and community spirit.

“This is more than just a celebration — it’s a chance to educate, uplift, and unite,” said Michael Jobe, NAACP Religious Affairs Chair “Each year, we grow a little bigger and a little brighter, and we’re so grateful to our sponsors and community for supporting this youth-led event.”

The event is free and open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend and take part in the festivities.

WASHINGTON – FreshRealm establishments in San Clemente, Calif., Montezuma, Ga., and Indianapolis, Ind., are recalling chicken fettuccine alfredo products that may be adulterated with an outbreak strain of&nbsp;Listeria monocytogenes&nbsp;(Lm), the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. Out of an abundance of caution, the company is voluntarily recalling all products produced prior to June 17, 2025, that are available in commerce under the following brand names.

 </figure>The products bear the USDA mark of inspection on the product label as well as establishment numbers “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” or “EST. P-47718” printed on the side of the packaging.FSIS and public health partners are investigating an outbreak of&nbsp;Lm&nbsp;that currently includes 17 ill people in 13 states. As of June 17, 2025, there have been three reported deaths and one fetal loss associated with this outbreak. The outbreak strain of&nbsp;Lm&nbsp;was isolated from ill people on dates ranging from August 2024 – May 2025. The same outbreak strain was isolated from a routine chicken fettuccine alfredo sample collected by FSIS in a FreshRealm establishment in March 2025. The lot of chicken fettuccine alfredo represented by this sample was held during sampling, destroyed, and never entered commerce. The subsequent investigations at the establishment that produced this product, and into the product ingredients, have not identified the source of contamination. FSIS also used purchase records from two ill people to trace purchased chicken fettuccine alfredo products to FreshRealm establishments. An additional two ill people verbally described chicken fettuccine alfredo products they purchased. FSIS identified products produced by FreshRealm that matched the descriptions during follow-up at the retail stores where they shopped. This investigation is ongoing. FSIS is sharing what is currently known regarding products associated with the outbreak as the agency continues to work with public health partners to identify whether a specific ingredient in the chicken fettucine alfredo may be the source of this strain of&nbsp;Lm.<figure>

 </figure>Consumption of food contaminated with&nbsp;Lm&nbsp;can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, people outside these risk groups are affected.Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. People in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.<figure>

 </figure>FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their&nbsp;customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls">www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls</a>.FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their meat products, including fresh and frozen, and to only consume premade meals like chicken fettuccine alfredo that has been cooked to a temperature of 165 degrees F.
