Hutchinson Housing Commission will not meet Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education heard a presentation from the Hutchinson High School JAG-K (Jobs for America’s Graduates Kansas) chapter as part of its meeting on Monday.

During the Program Highlight section of the meeting, Marcus Moeder, the JAG-K coordinator for Hutchinson High School, was joined by Region 4B Manager, Elizabeth Hamblin, and junior Hailee Black. 

The group presented on the JAG-K curriculum and explained its goals of employability, career readiness, and academic support. Black shared how taking JAG-K as an elective has helped through her high school journey.

The Board also approved new courses for high school students, most of them in fields provided by HCTEA.

They include Introduction to Art, Workplace Experience in Engineering, Workplace Experience in Architecture and Construction, Workplace Experience in Marketing, Workplace Experience in Manufacturing, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Drones), Intro to Agriculture, Agriscience, Agricultural Food Science, Animal Science, Plant and Soil Science, Horticulture, Biotechnology in Agriculture, Agricultural Leadership &amp; Communication, Agricultural Internship, Rules &amp; Officiating and Animal Health/Vet Tech.

USD 308 Board of Ed approves new courses, hears about JAG-K Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center says it has become the first hospital in the state of Kansas to use a new system to treat postpartum bleeding and hemorrhaging.&nbsp;

The Labor and Delivery Unit has introduced the new Jada Hemorrhage Management System. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Jada System in August 2020 and the early-adopting hospitals are reporting favorable outcomes.

The Jada System consists of a soft silicone loop that connects to a vacuum source. The loop is inserted into the uterus and has vacuum pores inside a protective shield. An expandable Cervical Seal is filled with sterile fluid to create a seal that holds a vacuum within the uterus. With the Jada System attached to the vacuum source, a gentle suction is created to evacuate blood and help the uterine muscles tighten.

Jill White, Director of Patient Care at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, said abnormal postpartum bleeding may occur after birth and can quickly become an obstetric emergency. “With postpartum hemorrhage being the leading cause of maternal mortality, accounting for 25 percent of maternal deaths due to obstetric complications, there is a critical need for effective and easy treatment options,” White said. “Data exists that the Jada System provides rapid, effective control of abnormal postpartum uterine bleeding. Hutchinson Regional started utilizing the device in February.”

Ken Johnson, President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said the FDA stamp of approval powerfully confirms the worthiness of medical instruments like the Jada device.&nbsp;

HRMC first to use postpartum recovery system

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) will release its quarterly earnings report later this morning.

The oilseed giant continued to move in a strong direction when it reported total earnings of $728 million, or $1.32 per share, in the final quarter of 2021. Total revenue for the quarter was $23 billion and profits totaled $1.38 billion, which was a small increase year-over-year. For the year, the company reported profit of $2.71 billion, or $4.79 per share. Revenue was reported as $85.25 billion.

ADM operates five elevators in the Hutchinson area, employing around 65 workers.

UPDATE: A few items have been moved off of Tuesday's meeting agenda for the Board of County Commissioners. According to the amended agenda provided to Hutch Post Monday afternoon, the health plan performance, compensation policy and architect additional work proposal for the courthouse dome have all been put off until the May 10 meeting. The meeting will still take place at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

An update on the aftermath of the Haven gas plant explosion will be given by Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar as part of Tuesday's Board of County Commissioners meeting.

Also on the agenda is budget requests from the Arts and Humanities Council, Hutchinson Recreation Commission, Reno County EMS, Horizons Mental Health and the Reno County Museum along with StartUp Hutch and TECH.

In addition, Reno County DA Tom Stanton will be in for a proclamation for National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

A Request for Qualifications for the proposed Sheriff's Office gun range is also to be discussed. 

The commission will also hear about its health plan performance for 2021, and give final approval to its compensation policy.

The commission is also set to approve the additional engineering for the more extensive concrete repairs to the courthouse, get its yearly communications update and go over CIP projects for the 2023 to 2027 budget years.

The Board of Reno County Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Reno County Annex.

Graber became a part of the Apollo II redesign program this school year after gaining approval from the USD 308 School Board in 2020. The school then spent a year putting the redesign into place before this year's launch. The ambassadors answered questions about their school newsletter, GLOW meetings, and progress charts.&nbsp;

The redesign project requires schools to remodel their academic programs to create successful high school students. Schools chosen for the state’s redesign program spend one year planning what changes to carry out. They then apply the changes the following year.

The Kansas Can Project was initially announced in 2017 after the Kansas Department of Education got feedback that the community wanted more focus on students’ nonacademic skills.

Graber Elementary School shows off redesign progress

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Central Kansas Veterans Community Partnership's resource fair event Saturday is going to be a drive-through event.

"We've worked with Uptown Hutch to section off part of the south parking lot," said Raechel Manley with CKVCP. "We'll direct you through, kind of loop you through all of the booths. You'll have an opportunity to pause and talk to each booth in whatever amount of time you need. They'll set up an appointment if you need additional time. Pizza Ranch, being a major sponsor of this event, they will provide you with a voucher for a free meal."

The resource fair is for all veterans of any age.

"CKVCP does not dissuade or discourage anyone with a different discharge status," Manley said. "Any veteran, anybody that has served, no matter the branch, no matter the year, no matter how long, we're here to help you."

Over 40 vendors will be available with different free services for veterans.

"CKVCP serves as kind of a wagon wheel," Manley said. "I tell people, we're that center spoke. You come to us and say, hey I need help and then we have those connecting pieces out to that larger ring."

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Uptown Hutch parking lot.

Kansas Gas Service says work crews will be closing off intersections of State Fair Road at both Main and Plum while the work is completed.&nbsp;

The company does not anticipate any natural gas service interruptions associated with the road work. Motorists are asked to use caution around both work sites .&nbsp;

State Fair Road to be closed Wednesday and Thursday for KGS work

The Dillon Nature Center's Lesser Known Lovelies plant sale is this weekend.

"We've gone beyond what we've normally done before COVID," said John Gallagher with Dillon Nature Center. "We are having our in person sale again, to the relief of many plant growers in this area."

They also had an online sale that has already ended, but the in person sale started with efforts from Betty Taylor to allow locals to plant the things they can already see work well at the Dillon Nature Center.

"I discovered that if someone came to the Dillon Nature Center, saw some plants in the gardens out there, really liked them, wanted to incorporate some of them with their marigolds and vincas and other things, they were not locally available," Taylor said. "My husband starts mainly all the plants from seed and he would order seed from various companies."

So, what's being sold Friday and Saturday is those already started, but not necessarily blooming yet, plants, that have been grown in a greenhouse to get them ready to go.

"We put little stickers on the sides of the pack to identify the plants," Taylor said. "They're not in bloom, most of them won't be in bloom and give you a sheet that tells you their name, their growing, whether they want sun or shade, how far apart to plant them, how tall they'll get, what color the flower will be and we'll have pictures up in the meeting room of the flowers that will be produced by these plants later."

The event is for members only on Friday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Then, the public will have an opportunity from 8 a.m. Saturday until the plants are gone at 3002 E. 30th Avenue in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amtrak is accepting full service reservations for the Southwest Chief for May 23rd and beyond indicating the Chicago to Los Angeles train is going back to its full time schedule. The “Chief” is one of four Amtrak long-distance trains currently operating five days per week that will return to daily schedules.

The “Chief” had been reduced to five days per week due to crew shortages. It was thought the rail carrier would go back to full service in late March but continued personnel shortages extended to limited service.

The Southwest Chief serves Hutchinson along with Dodge City, Garden City, Topeka, Lawrence, Newton and Kansas City.

In a non-pandemic environment about 6,000 passengers ride Amtrak to and from Hutchinson each year.

Amtrak restoring full service to Southwest Chief starting May 23

RILEY COUNTY , Kan.— A Sterling man was involved in a two-vehicle accident in Riley County Friday morning near the small town of Alma.

The Riley County Police Department reports that 65-year-old Scott Downing&nbsp; was going west on I-70 around 5:00 a.m. when he was hit by 30-year-old Tiffany Vargas, of Linn who crossed the center line of the westbound lanes and striking Downing's vehicle.&nbsp; After impact, Vargas' car crossed into the eastbound lanes and rolled.

EMS transported Vargas to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of her injuries. Downing was not injured.&nbsp;

The accident closed off the westbound lanes of I-70 while authorities worked the accident. The highway reopened around 9 a.m. 4 miles north of Alma or about 15 miles southeast of Manhattan.

 </figure>RILEY COUNTY , Kan.— A Sterling man was involved in a two-vehicle accident in Riley County Friday morning near the small town of Alma.The Riley County Police Department reports that 65-year-old Scott Downing&nbsp; was going west on I-70 around 5:00 a.m. when he was hit by 30-year-old Tiffany Vargas, of Linn who crossed the center line of the westbound lanes and striking Downing's vehicle.&nbsp; After impact, Vargas' car crossed into the eastbound lanes and rolled.EMS transported Vargas to Stormont Vail in Topeka for treatment of her injuries. Downing was not injured.&nbsp;The accident closed off the westbound lanes of I-70 while authorities worked the accident. The highway reopened around 9 a.m. 4 miles north of Alma or about 15 miles southeast of Manhattan.

Inman spring festival results in great fundraising

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire crews worked a garage fire Sunday afternoon.

According to a release from the department, just before 12:15 p.m., crews responded to a garage fire at 1317 East 5th. Heavy fire and smoke was coming from the garage.&nbsp;

They were able to keep the fire in just the garage. The fire was quickly knocked down, no people were hurt. The investigation continues.

As the Kansas Legislature gavels back in for their veto session Monday, it's important to note that test scores for students have not gotten better in recent years.

"Are assessments rising or falling?" asked the KASB's Mark Tallman. "Since we've started this system in 2015, there has been a decline. The debate is over what has been the reason for that. There was a bigger decline in last year's scores from two years before, which most people ascribe to the COVID pandemic."

It's important to note that getting a college ready score on the state's standardized tests is more difficult in Kansas than other states.

"Our tests, relatively speaking, are very hard to hit the accepted standard," Tallman said. "If you want to think of it, to pass, or to get kind of a good grade, they are tough tests compared to others."

The question is, do those level 2 kids that don't test to college ready still succeed in life?

"Regardless of test scores, our overall educational attainment, in other words, how many kids graduate high school, how many kids go on to college or other post-secondary, you know, trade schools," Tallman said. "Counting all of that, we have never had as many people in Kansas with education levels that we have now."

According to recently released American Community Survey figures from the 2020 census, Kansas best performance for 18-24-year-olds is in the percentage with any postsecondary education, from a few college courses to a graduate degree. That percentage increased from census to census from 56.5 to 58.8 percent, ranking 10th in the nation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The document shredding event that was postponed by weather in Hutchinson has been rescheduled. The Attorney General’s Office says the free document destruction event for Hutchinson will be Friday, April 29, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Participants are asked to use Gate 3.

The event was previously scheduled during National Consumer Protection Week, the first week of March.&nbsp;

Consumers are asked to limit their documents for destruction to three small bags or boxes. Documents will be securely transported to the shredding facility for safe destruction by a certified shredding company.

Document shredding event set for April 29

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Red Rock Auto Center is the Market South Hutch Business of the Month.

"My dad and I started this back in January of 2000," said owner Steve Miller. "We've been doing this for about 22 years now."

Steve and his dad always dreamed of having their own shop.

"I have the rare luxury of being able to spend time with my dad and work with my dad in a way, that at least for the first 10 years, I know a lot of people don't get the chance to do," Miller said.

The move to South Hutchinson was to give Red Rock Auto Center the opportunity to grow. When Orrin Pitts, the owner of Orrin's Pittstop was ready to sell, Miller was ready to buy and they've been in South Hutch for 12 years.

"It afforded us the opportunity to get back to our roots, which is cars and trucks," Miller said. "Yoder was a fantastic launching pad, but it included a lot of the ag community, which we were new to."

The expansion has allowed Miller to have ten employees at this point and a true, full-service shop.

"We are the ultimate full-service location," Miller said. "When you pull in here, even though our building still looks like 1957 Mayberry, if you were to pull in. We still have full-service pumps, that we'll pump your gas. What does full-service mean in repair shop? It's filling your tank with gas all the way through the repair in the back."

It's a place where you can go for anything you need for your car or truck, and it's locally owned and family owned, so you know your money is staying in the local community, as much as possible.

"We have the mantra of, feed those that feed us," Miller said. "We also get really big in our community. If one of our employees were to have baseball teams or softball, we'll get into the sponsorship of stuff like that or helping fund some of those things. We get really involved in a couple of school districts, Nickerson district being one of them. The track team, we just love what they are doing there, some local softball teams that we're a part of. We do a local Girl Scout cookie promo every spring."

One lucky scout gets to be the beneficiary of the order of 19 cases of cookies and then customers get that benefit, as well. 

"Being a part of the community is just the high point for me," Miller said. "It's just being a part of what's going on. We've been very blessed. If I can be a part of the community in some way, you know, some day it may be my turn to be on the other side."

Costs are going up for the inputs that go in to keeping your car running.

"Since November, there have been four 15% increases on anything that's petroleum or metal based," Miller said. "When I say petroleum based, I mean anything from tires to motor oil to any of the fluids that may go into your Buick or your Dodge pickup. That follows into supply and demand, where what we were able to get in 15 minutes to an hour, now sometimes takes three to five days. They talk about supply chain. There is an issue right now. I'm not sure what's causing it."

Red Rock Auto Center is located at 200 North Main in South Hutchinson. They are open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. They are closed on Sunday. Call them to make a service appointment at (620) 663-9822.

Kansas gas has gone up about a dime per gallon in the last week and Reno County is still a couple of cents below the state average, but the key word for the oil and gas markets going forward is volatility.

"We really spiked in terms of gas prices and crude oil prices back in the middle of March," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Then, we declined there for a few weeks, but then this week we saw another spike back upward. The situation still occurring in Russia and Ukraine leaves a lot of question marks, a lot of volatility. There have been some concerns with supply regarding Libya in the past week that have impacted crude oil prices."

Kansas is still less expensive than the nation as a whole, with a state average that runs roughly a quarter a gallon less than the national average, give or take a couple of cents depending on the day.

"There's certainly been adjustments, in terms of the U.S. government, in terms of our releasing strategic oil reserves and allowing E15 ethanol fuels to be used in the summer," Steward said. "That can definitely have a small impact in terms of what we may see, but the bigger issues are the global crude oil prices."

It doesn't look like summer travelers will stop or even slow as a result of prices at the pump.

"We hear from travelers that they may just adapt other plans," Steward said. "Maybe stay at less expensive hotels, or go to fewer attractions during their vacations."

Gas is just about a dollar a gallon higher than it was last year at this time.

"I think we're going to see inflation pull back a bit, but not enough," Goss said. "We're going to continue to see, I'll call it excessive inflationary pressure, something above four percent probably, for the rest of the year. It's now running between eight and nine. It's probably going to expand a bit before it falls back down. I think it will run to 10%, as much as 10% and then fall back as the Federal Reserve rate hikes cool those inflationary pressures."

Goss believes the rate hike of half of a percent anticipated in the first week of May is too late and might be too much at once.

"Historically, that's the pattern," Goss said. "In other words, you get too late and then you start increasing and then you overdo it and push the economy into slow, to no, to negative growth. That's what I expect in this case. Larry Summers, a former Treasury secretary, he's expecting a recession next year. There is a high probability that we're going to see negative growth next year, maybe even in the first half of next year and slow growth for the rest of this year."

The real concern is that too much of the economic brake from the Fed could result in stagflation, which is high inflation, high unemployment, and slow or negative real economic growth. Right now, the employment piece of that doesn't look like it's in danger, as businesses across the country are still looking for workers as they recover from the pandemic. Nonetheless, the subjects of the latest Rural Mainstreet Survey are pessimistic about the future.

"We have a confidence index," Goss said. "We asked the bankers to look out six months and our confidence index was at its lowest level since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020, March and April of 2020. There, we saw confidence fall significantly. It's back at those low levels."

This is in spite of positive signs in the rural economy, like farmland prices continuing to grow at the fastest pace since the 2006 launch of Creighton’s Bank CEO survey.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the Salt City Splash and Buhler City Pool just a month from opening, Hutch Rec is looking for lifeguards.

To be a lifeguard, you must be 15 years old or older and pass the lifeguard certification test that is available at the YMCA. The cost of the class is $200 but that will be reimbursed if you stay on at the Splash for the entire summer.&nbsp;

Hutch Rec looking for lifeguards

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College’s two student publications — The Hutchinson Collegian newspaper and Dragon’s Tale magazine — fared well in the annual Kansas Collegiate Media contest held April 10-11 in Wichita.

Overall, the publications combined for 102 individual awards in writing, photography, creative design and social media. Among those 102 awards were 25 first-place awards.

Brooke Greene, a Hutchinson High graduate and The Collegian’s Editor-in-Chief, was named Two-Year College Journalist of the Year. Greene picked up three other awards, including a first-place win in Features Writing for a story she wrote on the accident and recovery of alumnus Clayton Evans, aided by his wife and HutchCC alumna Melissa (Maldonado) Evans, and the support from the community.

The Dragon’s Tale staff at HutchCC is led by advisor Amber Brawner, Professor of Visual Media Design, while The Collegian staff advisor is Brad Hallier, Assistant Professor of Journalism.

Wind Advisory until 7 p.m. Saturday

NEWTON, Kan. —The Newton and North Newton Police Departments recently participated in a special operation that targeted major criminals, according to a report from the sheriff's office.

 This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County and over a 3-day span and officers made multiple arrests. In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. 

Among the other agencies who participated are the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, Junction City Police Department, Grandview Plaza Police Department , Osage County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office , Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and the Wamego Police Department.

This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County and over a 3-day span and officers made multiple arrests. In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. Among the other agencies who participated are the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, Junction City Police Department, Grandview Plaza Police Department , Osage County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office , Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office and the Wamego Police Department.

Kansas agencies collaborate to fight drug crimes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund of Hutchinson is launching a Faith in Vaccines campaign to promote COVID-19 vaccination and help ensure Kansas families are as prepared and protected as possible against emerging COVID-19 variants.

The campaign will run from late April through mid-May and will focus on reaching rural Kansans and parents of children ages 5–17.

The campaign will highlight the efficacy of the current vaccines and will include voices from trusted sources, such as pediatricians, faith leaders and rural community leaders, as well as testimonials from individuals who have been directly impacted by COVID-19.&nbsp;

“The decision to be vaccinated is a personal one,” David Jordan, Health Fund president and CEO, said. “We hope this campaign will provide Kansans with the additional information they need from trusted sources to consider if the vaccine is right for them. Ultimately, we want to see more people choose to be vaccinated and limit their chances of severe illness or death due to COVID-19.”&nbsp;

In 2021, the Health Fund released the Faith in Vaccines sermon guide and toolkit for faith leaders to have honest and empathetic conversations with their congregations, as well as the Faith in Vaccines lay toolkit to facilitate conversation about the COVID-19 vaccination with loved ones.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On April 19, at Butler Community College, PrairieStar Health Center was recognized by the Kansas Department of Commerce as the 2021 South-Central Region winner for excellence as a Healthcare Non-Profit. 

Each year, the Kansas Department of Commerce recognizes businesses for contributions they make to Kansas communities through job creation, community involvement, and overall economic impact.

PrairieStar has grown from 24,000 patient visits in 2015 to more than 74,000 in 2021 and has added more than 70 employees, 30 of those in just the last two years.  In addition, PrairieStar partnered with Collins Bus last year to create a mobile medical van. This tool has been vital to provide medical outreach to communities in Reno County and provide local businesses with customized health programs.

PrairieStar honored by Department of Commerce

BrightHouse director Sue Wray says they are seeing more need than ever for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

"We served 728 last year," Wray said. "About 15% of those were sexual assault victims."

BrightHouse is willing to serve victims, even if they aren't sure they are ready to prosecute offenders.

"We do not report to law enforcement unless the victim is comfortable with that," Wray said. "If that's what they want, that's what we will do, but they do not have to do that and that's important with sexual assault in particular, because there's so much shame associated with it."

The number of victims BrightHouse serves has continued to rise, but the overall scope is still unclear.

"You don't know," Wray said. "The people who aren't coming to us, you don't know how many people are not getting help from us or the police or whoever. There has been a consistent growth rate. That might be that we have more services available, so sometimes it might be that we're able to help people better, but we're not really sure what's causing that increase. We're not sociologists and such, but we just know that it's happening."
