Kan. — 
Cindy Dubovich with Hospice and Homecare of Reno County notes that the “Space to Grieve” Kids Kamp for children 6-17 years of age is coming up in July.

"We know that children that have lost loved ones need to have support," Dubovich said. "In order to be able to meet that need, part of Hospice and Homecare of Reno County's work is to host a Kids Camp in conjunction with Cosmosphere at Cosmosphere. We do this in the summer for a one-day camp."

This is the seventh year for the event that is from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 16.

"Children don't always have the opportunity to focus on and process their grief," Dubovich said. "They're doing what kids do. They're working on the day to day things and activities that children do. Allowing for a dedicated time with volunteers that are trained to work for that day and work with the kids through the feelings that they experience, sometimes that may be the first time they've been able to speak them. Part of it is also so very helpful for kids to encounter other kids who have had a loss and to know they are not alone."

The event is free thanks to support from United Way of Reno County and local civic clubs and merchants. 

"When we are working with the Cosmosphere, we split our time," Dubovich said. "We have our projects that we are working on through the hospice group, but Cosmosphere will do things like Goddard's Lab and have the kids there. They may be working with the zero-g. Last year, they also made ice cream with, I think it was liquid nitrogen was the process. They do things that we cannot. Part of why we split that up and give time for both is kids can't maintain a long term dealing with grief and being in it. They need to have some break times, so we go back and forth from fun things to more challenging things, being able to talk about our grief."

Kids camp is 'fun and challenging' to give kids space to grieve

Kan. — Police briefly had to deal with a suicidal subject around noontime Thursday in Hutchinson.

According to police, at 11:52 a.m. Thursday they were sent to 212 East 11th for an armed suicidal subject in the front yard. By the time they got there, the person had gone back inside. 

After a short period of time, the person was taken into custody for the purpose of getting them to the hospital.&nbsp;

The person was evaluated at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. No charges were filed in the incident.

On May 11, 2022, at 1:27 a.m., officers responded to a business alarm at Nex-Tech Wireless, 2525 Market Place, Suite B, in Salina. 

Officers discovered the rear door to the business had been damaged enabling entry into the building.

An inventory of products revealed various phone accessories were taken. The total value of the stolen property is estimated to be more than $500.

A similar burglary was reported to have occurred on the same night at the Nex-Tech Wireless in Hutchinson. Surveillance video from both businesses showed the same two suspects committing the burglaries.

Break-ins at wireless stores in Hutchinson and Salina under investigation

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that

Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Municipal Band will begin its 2022 season starting Memorial Day.

One of the oldest three bands in the state, the Hutchinson Municipal Band has consistently provided free music to the city of Hutchinson and Reno County since 1875. Even during a shortened 2020 season, the band has offered free music to all citizens each summer for 146 years. The ensemble consists of musicians from Hutchinson and Reno County, plus surrounding communities and counties.

The band will perform each Tuesday, May 31 through July 26. All performances will begin at 8pm at the Hutchinson Zoo.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Municipal Band organization includes a Concert Band, Parade Band, Salt City Jazz Orchestra, Big Band Explosion, Dixieland Combo, Jazz Combo, Brass Quintet, and Woodwind Combo. These groups are available to play at events around Hutchinson.

May 30th – Memorial Day, Memorial Park, 11 a.m.

May 31st – 1st Concert, Hutchinson Zoo, 8 p.m.

June 7th – 2nd Concert, Hutchinson Zoo, 8 p.m.

Hutchinson Municipal Band to begin 2022 Summer Season Memorial Day

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven USD 312 School District announced Thursday that third quarter Impact Award winner Cori Krol has been named the district's Employee of the Year. Krol was named from the list of fourth quarter Impact Award winners on Thursday.

Krol has served the district for the past 15 years. She is a 2002 Haven High graduate and continues to be an active community member.&nbsp;

Krol is a member of the Building Leadership Team and the PTO. She also serves on the district Education Foundation as a board member. She continues to serve as a mentor for new teachers and collaborates with her team to prepare and run kindergarten roundups each spring. She has also served in the after-school reading program and as a teacher for summer school.&nbsp;

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 recognized its very first graduates of the Ad Astra Virtual Academy on Thursday. Some students graduated before the celebration, but five students "walked" for graduation.&nbsp;

Those that graduated were Blake Anderson, Matthew Flynn, Charles Cornwell IV, Javon Clemmons, Makya Steinert, Trace Brown, Breya Milleson and Jacob Sosa.

Early graduates included Payton Thiessen, Kaleb Webster, Audrey Bailey, Trevor Cooper, Emilee Fincher, Shelby Fry and Elizabeth Montenegro.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department warned the public Thursday afternoon that someone was going up to residences saying they are a city employee with the water department, telling people they are behind on their bill and need to make a cash payment or their water will be shut off. 

Police noted that a city employee will never come to your residence and request a cash payment for your utility services.  If you encounter someone who is acting like this, please do not give them any information. Call 911 to report them.

Police say scammers are pretending to be from water department

MARQUETTE, Kan. —A Kansas man died in an accident just before 10 p.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a pickup driven by 62-year-old Richard Saunders of Marquette was northbound on Kansas 141 just north of the Kanopolis Reservoir dam when his vehicle struck the east guardrail several times before the truck traveled over the guardrail and rolled down the embankment.

Saunders was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Parsons Funeral Home. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

McPherson Co. man dies after pickup strikes guardrail, overturns

HARVEY COUNTY—A fire in Harvey County destroyed a barn and contents including a golf cart and skid steer.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Newton Fire/EMS was dispatched to a barn fire on S Kansas Rd. Crews arrived to find the structure fully involved with fire. 

After the bulk of the fire was extinguished, several hours were spent overhauling the structure, including the use of heavy equipment. No occupants, pets, or firefighters were injured in this incident. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. Whitewater, Sedgwick, Walton and Valley Center, crews assisted.

NEWTON, Kan. —Crews are working on a barn fire in the 5800 block of South Kansas Avenue in Newton, according to Newton Fire and EMS.

Authorities closed northbound lanes of Kansas Avenue. Officials asked the public to avoid the area due to traffic concerns and a water tender operation with trucks coming and going.

Authorities have not reported injuries or additional details.

Join the Hutchinson Art Center on Third Thursday tonight for two community arts project opportunities.

There will be organic/nature themed art inspiration bags available to the public in conjunction with Crow and Co. and the Dirty Hands art/book club. 

Also, there will be a community mental health themed art project in collaboration with the Milestone Clubhouse. The public is invited to participate tonight. 

The resulting art piece will be displayed at the Hutchinson Art Center in the front gallery alongside the Milestone Clubhouse members art exhibition called “Stop the Stigma!” 

This exhibit will be on display May 19th  through June 11th, 2022.

"Our practice at the Hutchinson Police Department is, we understand the value in those fentanyl test strips," Hooper said. "We haven't charged anybody for that particular crime. I also think that it's important to know that fentanyl test strips, in and of themselves, are not illegal. You can have them. It's kind of like a syringe. You can have a syringe, but a syringe full of heroin is illegal."

Hooper wants to make clear that though they will prosecute drug offenses generally, they still want to be sure that those who feel the need to use can do so safely if at all possible.

"It's not our intent, at the Hutchinson Police Department, even if we find somebody with fentanyl test strips in conjunction with narcotics, that we would charge them for that offense," Hooper said. "That's just our common practice here, because we find value in that. ABBYVILLE — The Abbyville Frontier Days Rodeo is this weekend and Pretty Prairie native Jacob Welker will start his bullfighting season there.

"It's really good to be home before I leave for pretty much three months straight," Welker said. "To be able to start the summer off on a high note is what I always look forward to, every year."

South Hutchinson splash pads open Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dirt work is underway for the new Hutchinson fire station. The new station, which will be located at 23rd and Main on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, will replace the current station at 20th and Main.

The station will have direct access to Main Street and will become the main fire station in the city. The station is usually one of the busiest in the city and makes most, if not all, calls to the fairgrounds. The cost of the station is in excess of $5 million and should be completed by May 2023.

The city has already entered into a 99 year lease agreement with the fair for the new fire station at $1 per year.

StartUp Hutch adds to board of directors

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A two-day mass casualty exercise involving Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Reno County EMS, the Hutchinson Fire Department and other entities ended Wednesday.&nbsp;

The second day of the drill saw those very entities enter the next phase of the exercise by establishing a command center. Representatives from all facets of the drill including Evergy, law enforcement and Public Works were given various scenarios over a two-hour period dealing with a mass casualty event, in this case a major earthquake.&nbsp;

It included outside response, dealing with triage and rescue from collapsed structures, mass infrastructure failure and coordinating outside agencies to assist. On the hospital side, it was a chance to test the internal workings including how patients move through the hospital in such emergencies and dealing with fatalities.&nbsp;

The agencies involved were not told about what was going to be thrown at them, so they had to address issues moment-to-moment.&nbsp;

Following the exercise, the county public information officers issued a press statement and then let Eagle Media and Hutch Post ask questions about each department as if it were an actual press conference.

Mass casualty exercise ends in Hutchinson

There are two opportunities to audition for productions with Stage 9 coming up later this month.

Auditions for Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding, an audience participation comedy and dinner theatre, are coming up May 21 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at Stage 9 at 9 South Main.

There is a total cast of 24 adults, lead roles include a singer who can play guitar and act, a DJ who wants to act or a karaoke operator who sings, and a separate vocalist.

Auditions will be done in small groups, with the first rehearsal June 5 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and performances Aug. 4-6 and 11-13 at Grace Episcopal Church.

Audience members are the guests at the nuptial celebration of Tony Nunzio and Valentina Vitale in all its tacky and hilarious glory.

Following the church service is a reception where the audience joins the wedding party and their bickering families for a pasta dinner, “champagne” toasts, wedding cake and dancing to a DJ.

The Hutchinson City Council approved on Tuesday a project to fix problems with the Mine Road culvert.

"The Grandview industrial ditch, or the GVI, collects and conveys stormwater from the city to the Arkansas River," said Assistant City Engineer Jessica Lowe. "Where the GVI crosses under Mine Road, several culverts have collapsed, requiring the closure of Mine Road. This is the back entrance for the Hutchinson Salt Company and it's the main entrance to the salt mine for semis that deliver a large portion of the Midwest's road de-icing and agricultural salt. The crossing is a critical piece of infrastructure and it needs to be fixed. Existing culverts are corrugated metal pipes and they haven't withstood the harsh environment near the salt mine well."

The new project gets away from metal as much as possible and uses a new reinforced box culvert with an alternate bid to add more corrosion protection over and above that provided by the concrete alone.

"In the base bid, there is some corrosion protection that goes on every box, actually most bridges, called a bridge backwall protection system," Lowe said. "It's like a felt sheathing or something that lays out and protects the bridge deck from the de-icing salt that can get in. The alternate was, like a PVC layer, like a sheet that you can lay down on top of that. It's just, that way, we get two layers of corrosion protection, because the environment is corrosive and we have all the salt trucks coming back and forth, just to protect that box."

They are also taking additional precautions to prevent corrosion in the building of the bridge itself.

"Typically, with bridges, you put epoxy coated reinforcing only in the deck and the rest of the bridge gets regular black steel," Lowe said. "For this particular bridge, we're putting epoxy coated reinforcing everywhere, because we don't want to have to talk about this again. This is going to be, hopefully, a well protected structure for the next 75 years."

The low bidder on the project was Klaver Construction at $1,743,341.60. This project will be funded by the Stormwater Utility Fee.

City to spend over $1.7 million on Mine Road project

The May Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month is Michelle Collins. Collins is a first grade teacher at Nickerson Elementary. Collins was nominated by parent Adrienne Childs.

“Michelle has such an amazing heart and goes above and beyond to make not only the students in her class but their parents know how much she cares for them," Childs said in her entry. "My daughter has made amazing strides in her class and truly enjoys being in her classroom!”

Collins believes she's teaching in the right place at the right age.

"I think first grade is the most rewarding grade," Collins said. "You get to see so much growth. They learn how to read. They're learning how to do math, addition, subtraction, fractions, they just learn so much. It's so much fun to watch them."

COVID was a challenge, and this is the first year without masks for a lot of the kids. She's also able to do more small group work with them this year.

"I think it's been a little challenging," Collins said. "They've had to get used to each other and just learn how to respect each other a little bit. Overall, they're still just six and seven year olds who just love to be around each other and engage in fun activities."

Her familiarity in the district has been an advantage in communicating with parents.

"Since I've been with Nickerson Elementary for so many years, I know a lot of the families," Collins said. "I've had their siblings. We use a communication tool called Seesaw, which my families seem to really enjoy. We communicate through Seesaw. We can send photos, messages, I can tell them how they are doing."

Collins has been a first grade teacher for 16 years in Nickerson. She wants every one of her families to know how much she appreciates all of them. She says she couldn't do anything without their support throughout the year.

It's so much fun to watch them."COVID was a challenge, and this is the first year without masks for a lot of the kids. She's also able to do more small group work with them this year."I think it's been a little challenging," Collins said. "They've had to get used to each other and just learn how to respect each other a little bit. Overall, they're still just six and seven year olds who just love to be around each other and engage in fun activities."Her familiarity in the district has been an advantage in communicating with parents."Since I've been with Nickerson Elementary for so many years, I know a lot of the families," Collins said. "I've had their siblings. We use a communication tool called Seesaw, which my families seem to really enjoy. We communicate through Seesaw. We can send photos, messages, I can tell them how they are doing."Collins has been a first grade teacher for 16 years in Nickerson. She wants every one of her families to know how much she appreciates all of them. She says she couldn't do anything without their support throughout the year.

Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will begin its serious budget discussions for 2023 at a meeting Thursday evening at 6 p.m.&nbsp;

The council will go over&nbsp;Municipal Equipment Reserve Fund planned expenditures and execution of its Capital Improvement Plan.

According to agenda documents, the city council will be presented plans to spend an estimated $3,213,276 in FY 2023 on MERF projects and an estimated $26,595,000 between CIP and reserve projects.

Future sessions are scheduled on water and sewer rates May 24 and general fund expenditures May 31.

City budgets typically have their official hearings in August.

Hutchinson City Council to hold budget meeting Thursday

KINGMAN COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Tuesday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported 2016 Freightliner semi driven by Jose Cruz&nbsp;Marquez Mareno, 44, Mexico, was westbound on U.S. 54 just west of South East 90th Road in the right lane. 

A hard gust of wind pushed the trailer over onto its left side and came to rest in the median.

EMS transported Marquez Mareno and a passenger Jose Luis&nbsp;Valdez Liera, 65, Mexico, to Wesley Medical Center. Marquez Mareno was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
