Kansas farm families spent Father’s Day weekend in the combine, a wheat harvest tradition. Hot, dry, windy weather signaled the continued rapid progression of harvest across the state. Some south-central Kansas producers have sunny harvest results to share while empathizing with farmers elsewhere that did not catch the same beneficial rains throughout the growing season. No matter the final yield or the holiday, farm families are working together to maximize the 2022 Kansas wheat crop.

James Mosiman had his Arizona landlord in the combine with him when Kansas Wheat staff stopped by the harvest field near Walton in Harvey County. Harvest results are good with yields at 53 to 78 bushels per acre, 14 percent moisture and test weights heavy at 61 to 62 pounds per bushel.

In the next field, son Justin was running the air-seeder to plant double-crop soybeans into the wheat stubble. The cutting and planting crew were joined by a load of kids from Boulder and Kansas City and their grandfather, all of whom piled out and climbed into the cab. The grandfather remarked the field trip helped his grandkids see where their bread comes from, yet another family harvest tradition.

In the same area near Walton, the Nuss family, alongside Troy Smith, worked together this weekend to get wheat in Harvey County harvested and straw baled for Smith’s cattle. The operation delivers straight to Ardent Mills in nearby Newton, making growing quality wheat a priority.

Harvest results thus far are strong with yields at 70 bushels per acre, moisture at 11.2 to 14 percent, test weights heavy at 62 to 63 pounds per bushel and protein at 10.5 to 12 percent.

Back in February - after an excruciating Kansas City Chiefs game - the family went and tinkered with a 1968 Case 660 combine sitting in the treeline. After taking out their frustration, they got it started. Motivated, they restored the machine to running condition, driving to southwestern Missouri to pick up parts from a collector happy to see them used. After sitting idle for close to 30 years, the old Case combine returned to the harvest field for a few passes.

Bonding over machinery and splitting up harvest and fieldwork responsibilities is a common theme in June. From the first day of harvest on Friday, Koby Royer, a senior at Kansas State University, was operating the combine while his older brother Alek&nbsp;ran the grain truck to and from the elevator. Koby helps out on the family operation in Yoder, Royer Farms, while working an internship in nearby Hutchinson.

Their morale is high, thanks to results from fields like the one they were custom-cutting in Reno County on Friday - 50 bushels per acre, 64.5 pounds per bushel test weight and 13 percent protein. The brothers are thankful for the moisture they received but empathize with farmers further west that did not see the rain when needed.

Hayden Peirce&nbsp;is also balancing helping out on the family farm near Castelton and working a summer internship. Starting work at six in the morning in town, he can finish up responsibilities as an intern before hopping into the combine mid-afternoon. Peirce is also a college senior, pursuing a degree in biological agricultural engineering from Kansas State University.

Using the protein testing in the cab, Peirce is seeing high protein, ranging from 11 to 16 percent. Moisture is dry - 10 to 13 percent - and test weights are above 60 pounds per bushel. Yields are coming in the 40’s and 50’s bushels per acre. He praised the variety KS Hatchett, from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, for its drought tolerance, which was put to the ultimate test this year. He compared harvest results to Zenda, also from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, and Hatchett outperformed it.

Harvest is truly a family affair with Peirce running the combine while his cousins man the grain cart and semi and his oldest brother operates the planter - all pivotal pieces to getting all farm work done in June.

Harvest in full swing in Reno, Harvey counties

There are many things those who have experienced moves or name changes this summer are likely thinking about, but if young married women who have chosen to change their name are wanting to vote in the August 2 primary, there is an important deadline coming up next month.

"If you do get married and change your name, you do need to change your voter registration," said Reno County Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager. "You can do that on our website. You can do that by coming in to our office. You can also go to the Secretary of State's website and do it and to the Kansas Department of Revenue. July 12 is the deadline."

Also, if you will be 18 before August 2, you can register to vote now. Party switches had to be made by June 10, but if you aren't registered with a party, you can choose that later.

"If you're unaffiliated, then you can affiliate when you go into the polling location and request a ballot," Fager said. "We'll have party affiliation cards there. They'll just have them fill one of those out prior to receiving their ballot."

There will be primaries for the Republican Party and the Democratic Party on August 2. There is also still the abortion-related constitutional question to vote on and you can still get a ballot and just vote on that.

"If you're unaffiliated and you don't want to affiliate, or you're a Libertarian, you can still come and vote," Fager said. "You'll receive that ballot style."

Hot weather can be dangerous or even deadly for small children or pets left in hot cars. If you see that when you're out and about, you can do something, but you have to be careful. A bill passed by the Kansas Legislature in 2018 says you can assist in specific situations.

"What it does is, it allows Good Samaritans the legal right and immunity under certain conditions from civil liability when they are rescuing a vulnerable person or a pet from a locked vehicle, if that individual believes that either the person or the pet is in imminent danger unless they are saved," said Cherie Sage with Safe Kids Kansas.

You have to be willing to do certain things to receive the protection.

"Is the car locked, don't break a window or break into the vehicle if you don't have to, check that first," Sage said. "Use the least aggressive means to gain access. Is the person or the pet suffering, or are they in imminent danger? On a hot day, we know vehicles can become very dangerous. They can reach up to 125 degrees in just minutes. Eighty percent of the increase in temperatures happens in just the first 10 minutes. It's really important to act quickly. Also, have you notified local law enforcement? Did you call 911? That should be the first thing that you do. Can you stay with the person or the pet until law enforcement arrives?"

Always be sure that you put something you have to take into your destination next to any child that also needs to exit the vehicle, like a cell phone or a purse or briefcase, just so you are forced to go back and look to be sure the backseat is empty.

Safe Kids: Good Samaritan law in effect to free baby or pet in locked hot car

The Market South Hutch Business of the Month is Geak Liquor. Owner Gretchen Haring has had the business since 2003.

"Geak is actually an acronym," Haring said. "It stands for my name and my children's names."

Haring was attempting to fill a need on that side of the river.

"South Hutch at the time didn't have a liquor store," Haring said. "We'd been through the area off and on and there's a lot of traffic down Main Street and K-96. It's a nice area. It was just something, the business aspect, to have an income and still raise kids and kind of do our own thing."

Geak Liquor has three employees. Haring says they are awesome.

"I think people are pleasantly surprised when they come in," Haring said. "We have a neat, clean store. We have a lot of variety. We have the craft beers. We have a select variety of wines, and a lot of the seltzers and the fun, fruity drinks, as I like to call them. Then we have your standard, domestic line."

Haring said the customers that have been loyal are what keep her going.

"We wouldn't be here were it not for the customer base, the people that have supported us," Haring said. "Everyone knows the last few years have been sketchy, with everything up in the air. We've got long time customers. They've been coming in here since day one. That's how small businesses survive, the support of the people. You get to know people. I had a lady come in yesterday in her 80s and she's like, do you have my wine? and I'm like, oh yeah, we've got it. It's just a fun way to be a part of other people's lives and help them make their choices. You really get to know them over the years. I've seen young couples and now their kids are 10 or 12 years old. It's definitely the people."

Haring said supply chain issues are a real problem, because when people have a favorite, that's usually the favorite and they will go wherever they can to get it. 

That's why Haring really wants to thank everybody that has come through their doors, because, as she says to employees, without those loyal, long term customers, they wouldn't be here.

Geak Liquor is at 513 N Main St, Suite A in South Hutch. They are open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and closed on Sunday.

T-Mobile announced Friday that Hutchinson is one of the 25 small towns winning Hometown Grants to jumpstart vital community development projects. 

The $50,000 grant will go toward renovating the Hutchinson Zoo with the addition of a Nature Play themed playground, including a splash river and greenspace to provide a dedicated and inclusive play space for children of all abilities.

"As a child who grew up coming to the Hutchinson Zoo with my grandparents, I am thrilled to see the Nature Play Expansion enter its final phase,"&nbsp;said Carissa Iseman, President, Hutchinson Friends of Zoo Board.&nbsp;"This project is at the heartbeat of who the Hutchinson community is - collaborative partners that truly believe we can make a greater impact together.&nbsp;Though the dream of the Nature&nbsp;Play Expansion and Splash River were born out of a match from a Federal grant, the Friends of the Zoo have had many partners help make it a reality for the children of Hutchinson. Receiving a T-Mobile Hometown Grant is a true honor. Children will have opportunities not experienced anywhere else, and the best part is it’s inclusive to all. Through self and social play, children of all physical accessibilities will get to explore and investigate the creek bed.”

The groundbreaking for the playground took place earlier this month.

Hutchinson Zoo gets $50K grant from T-Mobile

One of the many cast members to grace 2022 Smallville Con this weekend at the Kansas State Fairgrounds is Jack O' Halloran. He played Non, the menacing but mute member of the trio of Kryptonian supervillains in the first two Superman movies.

"It's like an immortal deal," O'Halloran said. "I knew that, when we did the film, that it was going to be there forever."

O'Halloran spoke glowingly of the brilliance of director Richard Donner. He believes the so-called Donner Cut of Superman II is more true to the intent of the story.

"Richard Donner is a tremendous director," O'Halloran said. "He had already shot 86% of Superman II. When they brought on Richard Lester, in order for him to be a named director on the film, he had to have shot better than 50% of the film, so he went back and reshot stuff and added a lot more comedy and stuff than Donner did. The Donner Cut is actually a much better version of Superman II."

One of the differences in the older Superman movies from current comic book fare is that it isn't nearly as dark.

"There was enough action in the film to make the story work extremely well," O'Halloran said. "You didn't need to go overboard. Today, the films get darker and darker and darker. Hopefully, that changes in the future."

CEO of Hutchinson Clinic looking for next opportunity, other senior jobs also open

A Hutchinson non-profit is helping facilitate a Juneteenth Celebration here in the Salt City this weekend.

"H.E.E.L.O. Inc is the Hutchinson Empowerment Engagement Leadership Organization," said founder Shontina Tipton. "I'm a native of Hutchinson and I'd been gone for some time. I came back to start a nonprofit. It's a nonprofit to work with the youth in the community. The nonprofit was already in conception about a year ago. It just kind of kicked of during Juneteenth celebration weekend. With H.E.E.L.O., we're going to be working with the youth. We've got several programs we're going to be working with. We've got a Stars and Stripes STEM program that we will be working with 4th to 12th graders, we have a Woodson principal's care to curriculum program, working K-12. We also started the Edward L. Tipton minority scholarship at Hutchinson Community College in honor of my father, Edward Tipton."

The events started Thursday with a talent show put on by the NAACP Youth, and there was a blood drive Friday at Stringer Fine Arts Center at HutchCC.

According to the meeting's agenda, the approved applicants are at 528 West 10th, 512 1/2 West 10th, 510 West 10th, 508 West 10th, 1001 North Monroe, 100 West 10th, 545 East Sherman and 114 West 13th.

There was a separate application for a series of properties on West 5th that would have expended nearly 70% of the program funds. Staff is recommending making that application a primary priority when more funds are in the program in 2023.

The Housing Commission meets Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Honor Flight Hutchinson Volunteers 3rd Annual Car Show is coming up Saturday, June 25 from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. at Midway Motors in Hutchinson.

You can register your car at the event to show. There will be a food court with hamburgers and hot dogs available.

The Kansas Honor Flight volunteers work to honor Kansas veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War by providing them with an all expense paid three day trip to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C. The organization also works to educate the youth and communities throughout Kansas about the impact of these historic wars and the freedoms our nation enjoys because of the service of our veterans.

Reno Recovery Collaborative to meet Tuesday

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized Moderna’s and Pfizer’s Covid-19 shots for children as young as 6 months old, but there are still some hurdles to clear before the shots will be available at the Reno County Health Department.

"We're waiting for that to go to the advisory committee of the CDC, which is the ACIP," director Karla Nichols said. "The ACIP, as far as I know, they are supposed to be meeting Saturday. Once the ACIP approves it, then it goes to the director of the CDC. Then, once it's signed by the director of the CDC, then it goes to KDHE. After KDHE gives us their rubber stamp, then we can start administering the vaccines."

Nichols thinks the rest of the process will go quickly, but they don't want to get ahead of it.

"We will have those," Nichols said. "Of course, they will not release those vaccines to us until we do have the approval of KDHE to start administering those vaccines. They are anticipating it will be sometime this next week when we will have that approval and be able to start administering those vaccines."

The FDA authorized Pfizer’s three-dose vaccine for children 6 months to 4 years old, and Moderna’s two-dose vaccine for children 6 months to 5 years old, but Moderna looks like it will be the one at the Health Department.

"When we were working with COVID-19 early on, administering and working with Moderna was a lot easier for us and for staff," Nichols said. "It doesn't have to have the diluent added to it. It doesn't have to have the ultra-cold storage. We want to make sure we're giving what we need to and we want to minimize any medication errors."

Which day next week the vaccine is released and appointments will be available remains to be seen, depending on how the process goes over the weekend.

Nichols: Process for COVID shots for youngest still ongoing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The May unemployment rate in Reno County is up a half a percent from the previous month.

According to the figures released from the Kansas Department of Labor the jobless rate increased from 2.1% to 2.6%. In 2021 the May jobless rate was 3.1%.

There were 779 Reno County residents looking for work in May compared with 613 in April. The unemployment rate in the city of Hutchinson is also up, from 2.3% to 2.8%, with 519 people looking for work.

The state's unemployment rate was down to a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.3% in May. This was a decrease from 2.4% in April and a decrease from 3.4% in May 2021.

Wednesday, U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) <a href="https://mann.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/mann.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/FINAL_ITC_2_RAIMONDO.pdf">led several of their colleagues in sending a letter</a> to the U.S. Department of Commerce, urging it to consider the record-high fertilizer cost and suspend the duties it placed on urea ammonium nitrate fertilizer imports from Trinidad and Tobago.

"We're seeing the price of fertilizer, which is many times based on fossil fuel increase 300 to 400%," Mann said this week.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) heard final arguments on Thursday in the antidumping duty investigation of UAN fertilizers from Trinidad and Tobago.

"When you quadruple the price of fertilizer and other inputs, it's all about the margin and what you actually take home," Mann said. "We're putting our ag producers, the best in the world, in a really bad spot right now."

RICE COUNTY —A man from Lindsborg was injured in an accident just after 11 p.m. Thursday in Rice County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Toyota Camry driven by 60-year-old Melissa L. Betha of Chase was southbound on Kansas 14 three miles south of Lyons when the Toyota entered the northbound lane to pass a stationary Rice County Sheriff's vehicle on a traffic stop. 

A 2010 Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Soft Tail driven by 61-year-old Kevin D. Malm of Lindsborg was traveling northbound and the&nbsp;Camry and the Harley Davidson side swiped each other in the northbound lane.

EMS transported Malm to Wesley Medical Center. Betha was properly restrained and not injured. Malm was wearing eye protection, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kroger got the fiscal year off to a good start with a release of its first quarter earnings on Thursday. 

Total company sales for the parent company of Dillons totaled $44.6 billion in the first quarter, compared to $41.3 billion for the same period last year. Excluding fuel, sales increased 3.8% compared to the same period last year.

Operating Profit totaled $1,505 million. Total earnings per share were 90 cents, with an adjusted earnings per share of $1.45.

The company raised its full-year outlook. CFO Gary Millerchip said, "We now expect identical sales without fuel to be in the range of 2.5% to 3.5%, adjusted FIFO operating profit of $4.3 billion to $4.4 billion, and adjusted net earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $3.85 to $3.95."

Kroger's first quarter 2022 ended on May 21.

Kroger posts strong 1Q numbers

Kan. — Several legal contracts will come before the Hutchinson City Council at their meeting on Tuesday.

The first of these is involving the lot for the new spec building from Salt City Investments LLC. The intent is to bring a new tenant or buyer to the Salt City Business Park to encourage development. 

Lot 5, the lot on which the spec building is to be built, is subject to a lien in favor of Siemens Wind Power, Inc. The City of Hutchinson is obligated by a prior contract with Siemens to pay $200,000 and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is obligated to pay $100,000&nbsp; to Siemens for the removal of that lien. The lien will be resolved prior to the closing of the transaction for the spec building.

The City will retain easements in favor of the City for the City’s rail line, deep disposal wells and any other municipal facilities or equipment located on the Lot 5 tract. In the event the buyer or a subsequent tenant or transferee desires to use the City’s rail line, the terms of use for said rail line shall be established by a separate track usage agreement.

The buyer is allowed to assume possession upon approval of the contract by both parties in order to facilitate construction.

The second is an update on the City County Agreement Regarding Law Enforcement Matters. 

The prior agreement between the City and the County had been modified by the removal of the Law Enforcement Center provisions. Those are now covered by a separate Lease Agreement between the City of Hutchinson and Reno County.

The proposed agreement incorporates the following changes:

The City of Hutchinson will be responsible for transporting all prisoners to and from the Reno County Correctional Facility to the Hutchinson Municipal Court.

The City of Hutchinson is responsible for transportation of individuals placed in protective custody by a Hutchinson Police Officer to a State mental health facility.

The City of Hutchinson will pay Reno County twelve percent (12%) of the total costs of the jail facility as opposed to the prior rate of fourteen percent (14%).

There is no longer a Joint Drug Enforcement Unit. Those provisions have been removed from the contract. The provisions for the use of the structure on East Avenue G for law enforcement purposes have been updated.

This agreement has already been approved by the Board of County Commissioners.

The third is the City-County Emergency Communications and Radio Maintenance Contract.

The contract was updated to reflect the Director of the Communications Division is a City employee. The contract has been further modified to clarify the budgeting process for the Communications Division. 

In the event the City of Hutchinson approves a Communications Division budget in excess of the amount approved by the County Commission at their formal budget hearing, Reno County shall not be liable for any portion of the increased amount. The contract was also modified to reflect radio maintenance services are on a contracted basis rather than by a City employee.

Budget discussions will also continue as their own separate agenda item on Tuesday.

Kan. — Several legal contracts will come before the Hutchinson City Council at their meeting on Tuesday.The first of these is involving the lot for the new spec building from Salt City Investments LLC. The intent is to bring a new tenant or buyer to the Salt City Business Park to encourage development. Lot 5, the lot on which the spec building is to be built, is subject to a lien in favor of Siemens Wind Power, Inc. The City of Hutchinson is obligated by a prior contract with Siemens to pay $200,000 and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is obligated to pay $100,000&nbsp; to Siemens for the removal of that lien. The lien will be resolved prior to the closing of the transaction for the spec building.The City will retain easements in favor of the City for the City’s rail line, deep disposal wells and any other municipal facilities or equipment located on the Lot 5 tract. In the event the buyer or a subsequent tenant or transferee desires to use the City’s rail line, the terms of use for said rail line shall be established by a separate track usage agreement.The buyer is allowed to assume possession upon approval of the contract by both parties in order to facilitate construction.The second is an update on the City County Agreement Regarding Law Enforcement Matters. The prior agreement between the City and the County had been modified by the removal of the Law Enforcement Center provisions. Those are now covered by a separate Lease Agreement between the City of Hutchinson and Reno County.The proposed agreement incorporates the following changes:The City of Hutchinson will be responsible for transporting all prisoners to and from the Reno County Correctional Facility to the Hutchinson Municipal Court.The City of Hutchinson is responsible for transportation of individuals placed in protective custody by a Hutchinson Police Officer to a State mental health facility.The City of Hutchinson will pay Reno County twelve percent (12%) of the total costs of the jail facility as opposed to the prior rate of fourteen percent (14%).There is no longer a Joint Drug Enforcement Unit. Those provisions have been removed from the contract. The provisions for the use of the structure on East Avenue G for law enforcement purposes have been updated.This agreement has already been approved by the Board of County Commissioners.The third is the City-County Emergency Communications and Radio Maintenance Contract.The contract was updated to reflect the Director of the Communications Division is a City employee. Main Street from Avenue A to Avenue C will be closed to celebrate.

The official 2022 Smallville Proclamation will be read on the main stage in front of the Stevens Building.
