Swim lesson deadline is today

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere announced Tuesday that it will host one of only three summer workshops for area teachers as part of Teachers in Space, a STEM education organization. Twenty-eight teachers from Cosmosphere’s LaunchLearning teacher fellowship will participate in the workshop July 12-15.

During their time at the Cosmosphere, teachers will experience a simulated mission to low Earth orbit using Cosmosphere’s Astralis capsule-based simulator and mission control. They will also work with cutting-edge satellite technology provided by Teachers in Space.

“Along with the weeklong workshop, we’re planning a school yearlong program, where teachers work with students to develop experiments they design and build,” Teachers in Space Project Manager Noah Luogameno said. “We then launch those on a rocket into space, on a suborbital or potentially orbital flight. We want to see teachers build flight-ready experiments that we will fly.”

Teachers in Space is providing an additional opportunity for two of Cosmosphere’s LaunchLearning teacher fellows, Heather Kincaid of Wichita, and Lindsey Baribeau of Rock Creek. They will travel to Vandenberg Space Force Base for Firefly Aerospace’s launch of their Alpha rocket carrying Teachers in Space’s Serenity educational satellite.

“We designed our LaunchLearning teacher fellowship to provide the most relevant STEM education professional development by focusing on space technology and space exploration,” JoAnna Strecker, Cosmosphere’s vice president for education, said. “Through Cosmosphere’s partnership with Teachers in Space, Kansas teachers will bring real world space research and technology to their classrooms.”

Cosmosphere selected for STEM education workshop

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec wants to remind parents and guardians that the deadline to register children for Play in the Park theatre arts camp is approaching.

The weeklong half-day camp features activities with an arts and theatre focus. Campers will hear stories with nature, science, theatre and arts activities.&nbsp;

Campers will also perform a special Play Day Program performance on Friday. The performance is directed by the Family Community Theatre.

Deadline for Play in the Park camp registration approaching

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A community engagement patrol by the Hutchinson Police Department early Monday morning led to the arrest of a Hutchinson man on possible charges of drug distribution and illegal possession of a weapon.

Police took Austin Peterson into custody around 1 a.m. on suspicion of drug distribution for meth and marijuana, drug possession, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a stolen firearm. His bond is set at $50,000.

Peterson was arrested after police were tipped about possible illegal activity in the 400 block of East 5th. Authorities made contact with Peterson and discovered a stolen handgun. A search warrant was issued where police found drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Possible charges could be filed within the week.

Arrest made during community engagement patrol

Kan. — The Reno County Health Department will begin offering Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations for children aged 6 months and over next week.

"We're thinking early next week," said director Karla Nichols. "We do not have the vaccine yet. We did pre-order, we just do not have it yet. They're saying we should get it later this week."

The Health Department is offering the Moderna vaccine for children aged 6 months to 5 years. They will receive a 2-dose series separated by 4-8 weeks. The CDC recommends the shots, whether kids have had COVID or not.

"They're still saying getting the vaccine is better protection for those kiddos," Nichols said. "It's going to last longer."

You'll need to call the Health Department to get the vaccine, if you want it right away.

"We have talked to the area doctor's offices," Nichols said. "As far as we know, we're the only one getting it in the community. Nobody else pre-ordered it. They may order it, but nobody else pre-ordered."

Always check with your child's doctor before having any vaccinations administered by the Health Department.

Sundeep pushed himself and his team to work through the engineering details needed to bring this innovative design to life and obtain a patent.”

The DFW system can be applied to all of the company’s existing watertube boiler offerings. It already has been proven out on several of Superior’s O-type rental trailer units and fixed-location boilers.

“This technology is a real industry game changer,” Don Whitman, vice president &amp; general manager – watertube division said. “We believe the DFW design, coupled with Superior’s long history of delivering quality boiler equipment, will only enhance the offerings available from our portfolio of products to end customers. Superior Boiler receives patent for watertube design improvements

Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council appears to be quite well along in the budget process, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/76955183-a215-4736-93f3-c4900d5e8852">as they are attempting to be revenue neutral with their budget,</a> but they will go through the notification process as if they were not able to hold the line on that number, because the X factor, which is valuation changes, is just an estimate at this point.

"Property owners have a period of time to protest valuations," said Interim City Manager Gary Meagher. "Some of that's going on right now. The actual valuation will not come out to us until November 1st. We're working on an estimate. It could adjust just a little bit, but usually the County Clerk's estimates are pretty close."

Since the budget has to be finished and go through the hearing process by August, it's just precautionary to file the paperwork at this point. The city also is due to continue to have a significant ending balance.

"The general fund ending balance is projected to be at $5,355,000, we'll have to subtract $20,000 from that," said Finance Director Angela Richard. "The Hutch Rec proposal for their Healthy Neighborhood position was not in this, so it will be $20,000 less than that is what's projected."

Also, the city's bonding is a little higher than they hoped, but still within parameters.

"You approved the Woodie Seat design, so we'll likely have to include that in our bonding," Richard said. "Our general fund bonding will be about $6.4 million."

More than one city council member expressed their pleasure with the process as led by Meagher.

"I've reviewed over the budget," said councilwoman Sara Bagwell. "It actuall looks like a pretty healthy budget. I don't know if that's because we did have some extra funding, so we were able to fund things a little better this time. I just wanted to thank everybody and the work that they put into it."

Of great value to the council was that Meagher's approach was to ask the department heads to make their cuts with Richard before the budget was presented to the council.

"I had no idea what the process looked like," said councilman Greg Fast. "It seemed pretty easy, as easy as it could be. We did give some direction. I've talked to several of the department heads. They've also said that it went fairly smooth and I thank all of them for that, for working hard to try to help us not raise taxes."

Also, Steve Garza was pleased with the discussions the council had within their own group and spending the nights so that he knows how to explain the decisions that were made to his constituents.

City council pleased with budget process, goal is to remain revenue neutral

Kan. — Progress continues on the new Hutchinson fire station on the Kansas State Fairgrounds at 23rd and Main.

"If you go drive by there, they are pouring all the footings around the edge," Beer said. "As of last week, with the seven inches of rain that we did have, we're really on track for the most part. They continue to pour the footings. Once they get that done, my understanding is, they'll pour some flatwork in the apparatus floor and then we'll be going vertical. There will be a lot of changes here in the next month or so."

Beer believes the progress is something you can feel, even as you drive by.

"A lot of progress is being made," Beer said. "It's just neat to be up there and see the construction. There is the excitement. Everybody that I've talked to, from the State Fair people to people just standing and looking, asking questions and stuff like that, there's an excitement for. I think it will be a great thing. It's going to change the service level of this city, going forward."

Once the new building is finished, the fire department will be better able to deploy the trucks it has.

"We're bringing Truck 4 from 11th and Halstead," Beer said. "That's going to turn into a single engine station and we're going to bring the truck, we'll have Engine 1 up there, along with a Batallion Chief. That will be our hazmat station. For calls for service, the 20th and Main Street station is our busiest station in the city. Many times when we have the secondary calls going out, we're bringing Engine 5 or Engine 6 in to take those secondary calls. By having a truck company up there right away, we'll be able to get on those calls much faster than having the companies drive across town to take the secondary calls."

The hope is to have everything finished a little less than a year from now.

Beer: Concrete work ongoing at new fire station

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Day in the Life series begins with a look into the inner workings of one of Hutchinson's oldest companies, Hubco. Hutchinson Bag Company was started in 1919 by Emerson Carey as a way to aid his budding salt mining industry.&nbsp;

Today, Hubco manufactures and prints cloth, woven, and non-woven textile bag packaging in a variety of fabrics, sizes and styles. Hubco serves a wide range of industries, offering many stock and custom bags for food products, feed, seed, mining and oil, cathodic protection, and mailing and parts. The company changed its name to Hubco in 1991 and has been a staple of the Hutchinson industry for 103 years.

The process starts in a warehouse just south of the plant where large rolls of cloth and burlap are delivered and stored. When needed, the rolls are moved to the plant where they are cut into various-sized rolls for manufacturing depending on the size of the bag.

While it looks like this machine cuts the fabric, it actually uses small teeth to tear the fabric in a corrugated pattern so it doesn't unravel during the manufacturing process.

Once the rolls are cut, they are set aside according to size and wait for their run through the production line.

Once the bags are prepped, they are moved to the printing area where a number of printers can put one or multiple colors of ink on the fabric.

Now that the bags are printing, it’s time for the manufacturing process to begin. Various machines sew the bags. This includes inserting labels and placing holes for drawstrings or other methods of securing the bag. The bags can be large or small. One of Hubco’s strengths is its willingness to make small runs of bags for individuals who may have a niche market for small items. The bags are sewn in various areas, either by machine or even by hand.

The bags are then packaged and shipped to their destinations. Hubco started with five employees and now employs 54 people (nine in the office and 45 in the plant). Hubco credits its stability and ongoing success to its loyal employees. One employee has been with the company for 50 years. Like most, Hubco says it could use more employees and credits its work environment for its low workforce turnover.

Hutchinson Bag Company was started in 1919 by Emerson Carey as a way to aid his budding salt mining industry.&nbsp;[SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO]Today, Hubco manufactures and prints cloth, woven, and non-woven textile bag packaging in a variety of fabrics, sizes and styles. Hubco serves a wide range of industries, offering many stock and custom bags for food products, feed, seed, mining and oil, cathodic protection, and mailing and parts. The company changed its name to Hubco in 1991 and has been a staple of the Hutchinson industry for 103 years.The process starts in a warehouse just south of the plant where large rolls of cloth and burlap are delivered and stored. When needed, the rolls are moved to the plant where they are cut into various-sized rolls for manufacturing depending on the size of the bag.<figure>

 </figure>Now that the bags are printing, it’s time for the manufacturing process to begin. Various machines sew the bags. This includes inserting labels and placing holes for drawstrings or other methods of securing the bag. The bags can be large or small. One of Hubco’s strengths is its willingness to make small runs of bags for individuals who may have a niche market for small items. The bags are sewn in various areas, either by machine or even by hand.<figure>

 </figure>The bags are then packaged and shipped to their destinations. Hubco started with five employees and now employs 54 people (nine in the office and 45 in the plant). Hubco credits its stability and ongoing success to its loyal employees. One employee has been with the company for 50 years. SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Come celebrate Independence Day in South Hutchinson with a free fireworks show on Saturday, July 2nd. 

There will be free inflatable bounce houses and a rock-climbing wall for the kids along with an obstacle course provided by the South Hutch Fire Department. 

Free hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be available for the first 500 people thanks to ONEOK.

The Los Mariachis Food Truck and Salt City Chiller Shaved Ice Truck will also be there.

The Hutchinson Home Plate Club also is hoping to hold a cornhole tournament in the afternoon and baseball and softball games.

The fireworks show to start at 9:30 p.m. will last about 20 minutes in the large open field west of the baseball diamonds. The fireworks are sponsored by Market South Hutch.

South Hutchinson to hold fireworks, events July 2

Kan. —&nbsp; The Vitality Team of Reno County is hosting a special memorial ride honoring former Hutchinson resident and cycling enthusiast, Mark Call, this Saturday, June 25. 

Call was an avid cyclist in the community and a charter member of the Hutchinson Headwinds Bicycle Club. Following his death in October 2020, his family wanted to honor his appreciation for bicycling and trails, and did so through a memorial that paid for the construction of a shelter area and trailhead at Rice Park.

The City of Hutchinson’s parks and facilities department oversaw the new trailhead project, which the Call Family is naming “Mark’s Respite.” The trailhead is located just south of the Rice Park Shelter Building, along the Jim P. Martinez Sunflower Trail.

Saturday’s Mark Call Memorial Ride will include a ribbon cutting of the new trailhead, along with refreshments, plus two guided rides to choose from in honor of Call. This event is free and open to the public; residents are asked to meet at the Rice Park Community Building, located at 44 Swarens Street.

WICHITA, Kan. – AAA predicts 47.9 million people nationwide, including more than 387,000 Kansans will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend (June 30 – July 4).

Overall travel will increase 3.7% nationwide over 2021, bringing travel volumes just shy of those seen in 2019. Travel by Kansans will increase 4.5% over last year among all modes of travel.

Nationally, car travel will set a new record despite historically high gas prices, with 42 million people hitting the road, up 0.4% from 2021. In Kansas the number of travelers driving to their destination will be down slightly, about 0.8%, with nearly 326,000 Kansans taking to the highways.

Recent issues with air travel and ongoing concerns of cancelations and delays may be driving the share of people traveling by air to the lowest level since 2011. Air travel by Kansans is projected to be down about 3% this year compared to last.

Drivers should expect the longest travel delays heading into the holiday weekend, particularly during the afternoons on Thursday, June 30 and Friday, July 1 as commuters leave work early and mix with holiday travelers. Drivers in major U.S. metros could experience double the travel times compared to a normal trip.

Hutchinson Symphony announces upcoming season

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will have a special meeting to clean up paperwork prior to the end of the school's fiscal year on Thursday.

Fiscal year end payments for the school are on the agenda. 

Also to be considered are resignations of an assistant football coach and an instructional technologist and the early retirement of the EMS Lab Assistant Coordinator. 

The board will deal with the disposal of outdated equipment that cannot be fixed, as well.

Items of fiscal action include a contract with Underscore Higher Ed to be the Customer Relationship Management consultant for the Slate admissions and enrollment management, student success, and alumni/advancement computer program at a cost of $45,000 and the replacement of 10 computers and 7 monitors for the Media Communications program located in Bldg 12 with Underground Vaults and Storage at a cost of $39,005.70.

The meeting begins Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Justice Theater of the Shears Technology Center at Hutchinson Community College at 1300 North Plum.

The Reno County Health Department will be offering an orientation class for those interested in becoming a childcare provider.

 The class will be held via the Teams app on July 7, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Reserve your spot by calling Jeanette at 620-694-2900. 

The cost to attend this adult only class is $20.

State law requires childcare to be given in regulated facilities.

"This is due to the construction that is taking place on campus," said spokesperson Rachel McMaster. "We just don’t have the necessary space from which to shoot the fireworks or to host people."

They hope to have fireworks return in 2023, once construction is complete.

The Pratt Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) Board of Directors announced Ashley Fitzsimmons Smith as their new President and Chief Executive Officer starting Tuesday, July 5th.

Ashley comes to PACC from IMI Global, where she has worked as a Sales Coordinator &amp; Customer Verification Specialist. She previously held positions with Cinch Outlet/Miller International, Performance Livestock Analysts, and High Call Outfitters.

Ashley grew up on a farm in eastern Pratt County. With the desire to be closer to family, she and her husband made the decision to move back to Pratt in order to make it their home to live and raise their own family.&nbsp;Ashley holds a B.S. in Organizational Leadership from Fort Hays State University and a B.S. in Agricultural Communications and Journalism from Kansas State University.

New Chamber President hired in Pratt

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center received the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.

Also, Hutchinson Regional was honored as a TARGET: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll facility for the hospital’s efforts to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized as a result of a stroke.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the nation. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that occurs, a part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs resulting in the death of cells. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

This is the second time Hutch Regional has won the Gold Plus Award, the first time being in 2018. For four of the past five years, Hutch Regional has won either the Gold or Silver level award from AHA.

The Nickerson high school library is moving toward a remodel and is purging hundreds of books from the nonfiction section. 

The library will be open to the public to offer books from the nonfiction section only Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 

Free will donations are appreciated to help Nickerson High buy new furniture for the library.

Nonfiction fans: Get books from Nickerson High this week

A workshop to help with suicide intervention is coming up next week in Hutchinson. The ASIST training is June 27 and 28 at the Trade Center Community Room at 1600 North Lorraine.

"We could probably still take a couple of people," said Beth Akins with Horizons Mental Health Center. "It's free, because we get United Way funding. It's free for people who live or work in Reno County."

ASIST-trained caregivers help those with thoughts of suicide feel less suicidal and more hopeful.

"It's designed for the layperson, to give them the tools to help somebody who is having thoughts of suicide, until they can get them connected with an appropriate professional," Akins said. 

ASIST is appropriate for anyone age 16 or older. Many professional caregivers use the PAL model, but it is open to members of the general public.

"We'll spend some time talking about attitudes and beliefs about suicide," Akins said. "We'll talk about how can you tell if somebody is having thoughts. How do you ask somebody who is having thoughts of suicide about their suicidal thoughts. If they say, I'm having vague thoughts, but nothing really concrete. I'm just sort of feeling hopeless and frustrated, we'll talk about how to help that person. Versus the person that says, yes I'm having thoughts of suicide and today at 4:00 I'm taking a handful of pills and I've already collected those pills and I'm ready to go."

CKVCP needs supplies for veterans

Kan. — 
Hutchinson Police promoted three officers to Sergeant on Friday, James Sanders, Cory Schmidt and Wesley Vaughn. Their bios have been posted below.

Sergeant Sanders joined the Hutchinson Police Department in 2014 after serving in the Marines. Sergeant Sanders was assigned as a patrol officer and was selected as a Sniper on the Emergency Response Team in 2016. In 2018, Sergeant Sanders was selected as the Department's first K9 Handler and currently serves with K9 Tank. Sergeant Sanders currently is the ERT team leader and K9 coordinator. 

Sergeant Schmidt graduated from Friends University with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology and Pre-Law. He began his Career in Law Enforcement with the Hutchinson Police Department in 2015. Since then, he has served as a Field Training Officer, an instructor for numerous classes, a Sniper on the Emergency Response Team, a Master Police Officer, and a K9 Officer with K9 Nika. 

Sergeant Vaughn was born and raised in Sterling, Kansas. He  attended college at the University of Michigan before returning home to Kansas to pursue a career in law enforcement. Sergeant Vaughn served at the Reno County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years before transitioning and serving with HPD for the last three years. Sergeant Vaughn was awarded the title of Master Police Officer earlier this year, and continues to strive for excellence in his roles as a Field Training Officer, Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigator, and a Crisis Negotiator.

Three promoted to Sergeant for HPD

Every year around this time, the world around me has the potential to quickly turn into a continuous swirl that would be perfect for a TV series. 

In cinematic effect, I imagine my story would begin with a black and white tight shot of my eyes opening wide from slumber and darting back and forth in a semi-confused state.

The background music at the start of my episode would consist of an odd pattern of guitar plinks and orchestral bursts, and over this hair-raising musical selection would include a Rod Serling-like narration:

“You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance. Of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into … the ‘Harvest Zone.’”

Harvest crews are making their way through wheat fields in my part of the world right now. As a farming family, this begins the busy season of not only harvesting wheat from the fields while racing the summer storms, but also finishing up the planting of our fall crops, and beginning the long, hot summer days of irrigation. Sprinkle in a variety of summer activities for our kids like Vacation Bible School, baseball games and swim lessons, and you have a swirling vortex of days that leave people like me asking at times, “What day is it?” 

It’s during this time of the year I have to intentionally look at my calendar every morning to identify which kid has a baseball game that evening, if I have a scheduled Zoom call at some point during the day, or if my newspaper column is due. In reality, I also have to look at my calendar to know what the actual day is.

It’s during this part of the year where I intentionally set two alerts on all of my calendar entries. One alert is set for “1 day before” and the second for “1 hour before” to help remind me of daily events. 

And it’s during this part of the year while conducting my daily morning calendar review, I will also routinely set alarms on my phone to go off approximately 30-minutes prior to any calendar entries that demand me to be at a certain place at a certain time. 

While it seems excessive, all of this helps me to avoid wandering through a timeless dimension exacerbated by the hustle of wheat harvest and other continuously flowing summer farm and family tasks and appointments that can easily blend into one big summer blur if not contained.

To know what day it is and to be aware of what time it is helps me stay as grounded and focused as possible. These are the steps I take to keep moving forward and not overlook important tasks needing my attention. 

Whether it’s getting my kids to their games on time, delivering seed to a field at the right time, or consistently delivering our harvest crew their meals twice daily at mealtime, it’s just one of the ways I try to maintain awareness of real time while living in the “Harvest Zone.”

Insight: The Harvest Zone

The South Hutchinson City Council is due to meet Monday night.

As part of his report to the council, City Manager Joseph Turner said the citywide garage sale and cleanup earlier this month was a success. Fifty homes signed up to participate and all six of the roll-off dumpsters were filled with trash and debris. Turnout for the garage sale was very solid, if not higher than normal. Turner has requested residents and participants to fill out a survey requesting feedback so that we can make next year’s event more successful. So far about 20 people have responded.

Also, Turner is pleased with the work completed by South Hutch Public Works staff on two valley gutters along Avenue A. It is the long term intent of South Hutch to tackle higher level tasks and save taxpayer dollars versus outsourcing to private contractors.

With that said, there is a project on the agenda for tonight that requires special skill and materials. That project is rehabilitating sanitary sewer manholes. City staff believes that there are approximately 1,000 vertical feet of sewer manholes located east of Main Street that need rehabilitation. The intent is to hire Utility Maintenance Contractors, LLC to do the project as they have over 30 years’ experience in the lining, rehabilitation, and repair of sanitary sewer manholes. The contractor will apply a ½ inch thick cementitious material called Strong Seal MS-2A to the manholes at a cost of $118 per unit, for a total of $132,000.

Also on the agenda is designating an official newspaper for the few issues where state statute is not clear that posting on a city's website is sufficient. For those limited cases, South Hutchinson is set to designate Pretty Prairie's Ninnescah Valley News as its official publication.

The South Hutchinson City Council meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall at 2 South Main.
