Hutch in Harmony holds its third annual March for Unity tomorrow, June 25, at 8 a.m. Marchers will gather at W Ave. B to march up Main Street in Hutchinson to 12th Ave. 

The Hutchinson Police Department is providing security for the event, and the Boys &amp; Girls Club of Hutchinson is volunteering to provide a bus following the march for those who want to participate but prefer not to walk, as well as providing shuttle service back to the starting point. 

Leaders from all sectors of local efforts for equality will lead the march, in recognition of their work and in community solidarity with each other's causes.

March for Unity Saturday in Hutchinson

Road access is being affected as part of ongoing construction of the new K-14 realignment between Hutchinson and Sterling. Here is an update of recent and upcoming changes in Rice and Reno counties:

--Avenue X between 19th Road and 21st&nbsp;Road in Rice County has reopened.

--Avenue V is tentatively scheduled to reopen in Rice County next Wednesday, June 29.

--Also on Wednesday, June 29, Nickerson Road will be closed between West 108th&nbsp;Avenue and West 95th&nbsp;Avenue in Reno County.&nbsp;This closing will allow for construction of a bridge and interchange as part of the K-14 realignment project. The closure will remain until sometime in the spring or summer of 2023.

--Throughout the week of Monday, June 27, through Friday, July 1,&nbsp;West Avenue T, in Rice County, could be closed intermittently for asphalt paving for a temporary road at the site. The contractor will try keep the road open as much as possible by flagging traffic through the work zone. Still, motorists should be prepared to slow down and face some delay.

This Kansas Department of Transportation realignment project started in the spring of 2021. This a 15-mile, $81.7 million realignment of K-14. The work stretches from Hutchinson, to Nickerson, to Sterling. The project is expected to be completed by June 16, 2023. Bob Bergkamp Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the primary contractor.

During the work, traffic will continue to use the existing K-14/96 alignment in Reno and Rice counties.

The Reno County portion of the realignment will be from about 4.5 miles southeast of Nickerson northwest to the Reno/Rice county line. The length is a little over 7 miles.

The Rice County portion of the realignment will be from the Reno/Rice county line to just north of the K-96/Avenue T junction. The length is about 8 miles.

KDOT gives update on K-14 realignment project

Hutchinson city council member Jon Richardson is glad to see the process with the Woodie Seat Freeway continue forward. 

"We're trying to shrink that timeline to actual construction happening," Garrett said. "The longer we wait, the more expensive it's going to get. The anticipated timeline was that we would have plans by the end of this year. For some reason, October or November sticks out to me, when we'd actually have plans that we could send out for bid."

The plan is to do a roundabout at Avenue A and explore the options at Avenue B to see what can be done to allow traffic there. Part of the reason getting this done quickly is so important is because costs of everything continue to skyrocket, especially when it comes to consumables and supplies needed for construction.

"There's going to be a lot of, I don't want to say, flying by the seat of our pants, because that sounds pretty haphazard, but there's going to be a lot of adjusting as we go and we see things change," Richardson said. "Things that we can get now in six months we may not be able to get, things we can't get now, we may have a surplus of and be sitting on it."

The uncertain cost environment is part of the reason the city is making an effort to get as close to a revenue-neutral budget as possible this coming year.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Farmers Market is taking advantage of a grant to allow those on food assistance to purchase goods from the market.

Residents on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP) or other food assistance can use their cards to purchase food from the market. If you use your SNAP card the farmers market will double your purchase up to $25 that can be used to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables.&nbsp;

The program is offered through a grant and support from the Reno County Farm Bureau, the Reno County Extension Service and the Food Policy Advisory Board using funds from the Chronic Disease Risk Reduction Grant.

The farmers market is open each Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and each Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

SNAP and other food assistance programs now accepted at Farmers Market

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  Retiring Horizons Mental Health Center CEO Mike Garrett sees the legislation working its way through Congress as a potential net positive in terms of funding treatment across the country.

"That provides funding to states to allow all community mental health centers to develop a higher level of care, which is known as Certified Community Behavioral Health Care," Garrett said. "A lot of the programs to try to keep people out of higher levels of care have been available, that we can develop, by virtue of a grant that we received from SAHMSA to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. That piece of legislation will allow that to develop all across the country and to the other community mental health centers in Kansas that weren't lucky enough to obtain such a grant."

Horizons was one of only six community mental health centers in Kansas selected as recipients of the expansion grants. Garrett believes red flag laws may have procedural problems.

"The red flag law, as least as I understand it at this point in time, is an alert that a person may have a history of mental illness, may have access to guns, and so the court's going to intervene and take those guns," Garrett said. "The challenge will be the assessment that says that person can have those guns back and the variability of treatment and the waxing and waning of symptoms. In theory, I think it makes a lot of sense. I'm not sure, on a practical level, it's not going to run into a lot of problems."

Garrett also cited a statistic that clarified the difference between ongoing mental illness and the anger and rage that prompts acts like mass shootings.

"People with mental illness are much more likely to be victimized, rather than to commit acts of violence," Garrett said. "What current research is finding is that many of those mass shootings are the result of people that are very angry, due to maybe previous abuse, bullying and social isolation. The research right now is indicating only about 4% of those type of incidents are due to people with mental illness. That stigma is being perpetuated around those major mental illnesses. I hope we'll be able to correct that."

The goal is to have the eight bed crisis stabilization facility for adults at 311 West 2nd open here in Hutchinson soon.

Garrett: Bill in Congress would help get all mental health facilities more funds

New Kansas State University President Dr. Richard H. Linton was in Hutchinson at the Encampment Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds Thursday for a listening and learning town hall with the K-State Alumni Association.

"I think we have a great relationship with the community and also a great relationship with the community college," Linton said Thursday. "It's all about finding a way to help in higher education, to be able to help provide an opportunity for youth to be able to get a college degree. A big part of my visit here in Hutchinson is to be able to talk with the community college and understand how we can help them grow, how they can help us grow and how we can collaboratively work together."

Linton has spent his entire career in land grant institutions, and that is by design.

"Thirty eight years in the land grant system," Linton said. "Nine as a student at Virginia Tech getting all three degrees and then 29 years at Purdue University, The Ohio State University and N.C. State University. When I was looking and considering a President's position, it had to be a foundational land grant. There's not many foundational land grants that still believe in research, teaching, extension and outreach for the benefits of the citizens of the state. K-State's one of the few. I had worked on a number of projects 15 years ago and always valued the family feel, the authenticity, the genuine nature of the people. People in this state are so passionate about the land grant. It's a great place to be President and I'm looking at trying to do everything I can to move this university forward."

Linton knows that one area where K-State is going to be able to provide unparallelled opportunity to its students and faculty is in animal science, once the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility is fully commissioned.

"It puts us best in the world," Linton said. "It's the only facility in the United States, only one of five in the world that's BSL Level 4 for food animals. I think, when you have something that puts you best in the world in a partnership with USDA ARS, we need to be thinking about everything that we can do to be able to build upon it, to be able to make it greater. Already, we're seeing some of the benefits. Just recently, over the last couple of months, we had the biggest economic development announcement in the history of Manhattan, with Scorpion Biologics coming and providing a $650 million investment in human vaccines. We're hoping to be able to build that private-public partnership and to be able to grow what we do for the food animal industry here in Kansas, with national and global impacts."

Linton is the 15th president of Kansas State University.

Starting on Monday, June 27th, the City of Hutchinson Public Works Traffic Division will be moving the traffic signal pole on the northeast corner of 11th and Monroe.&nbsp;

This work is being done as part of the reconstruction of 11th Ave. to make room for updates to the intersection and sidewalks.

While this work is being done, a 4-way stop will be put in place. Weather permitting, the intersection should be back to normal by end of day Friday July 1st.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  The Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center's 295th Basic Training class gave specialty items to the Hutchinson Animal Shelter as their class project. Those items included cat litter, dog Kongs, treats, new leashes, peanut butter and more.

This Saturday on Main Street at Eagle Media at 825 North Main, the Animal Shelter will be out with dogs available for adoption. Adoption fees will be half price at the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sponsoring the discount are Eagle Media, Keeler Chiropractic, Scuttlebutts at the Clayworks and Special K9 Dog Training and Country Resort in Burrton.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  The First Presbyterian Church has started Denise's Pet Pantry, a volunteer-based mission of FPC Hutchinson. 

The pantry, housed on the lower level of the church building at 201 East Sherman, is named after longtime church member, animal advocate, and Hutchinson resident Denise Hallman, who died in May.

Denise's Pet Pantry distributes pet food and related pet items to families in need in order to keep pets and their families together when times are tough. They are open the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, but they will need continued donations of dog food to keep the effort going.

Nine Buhler High School Students were recipients of National FFA Foundation Scholarships at the 94th Annual Kansas FFA Convention this past week in Manhattan.

"The National Foundation offers approximately $2.7 million, generously donated by numerous sponsors, to FFA members across the nation every year. The awards range from $1,000 to $10,000 to assist with the students’ education at a two-year or four-year institution. Award determination is based on a student’s qualifications including academic achievement, leadership, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), FFA involvement, or financial need."

Buhler students who received scholarship awards were:

Interfaith Housing is looking for volunteers to help finish the work for their homeless shelter for those aging out of foster care and otherwise without adult support from ages 18 to 22.

The property at 1005 N. Washington Street in Hutchinson is being renovated into eight one-bedroom fully furnished apartments. Interfaith is leading the renovation and construction of the LightHouse and will be managing the apartments and organizing mentorships resources for the residents.

The focus for the project is now shifting to interior painting, trim work and cabinet installation. Local groups are encouraged to volunteer and lend skill to helping finish this project.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sales tax revenue for Reno County rebounded nicely from last month's decline when compared year over year.

June sales tax receipts totaled $494,748 compared with $420,486 in 2021. It offsets the decline in sales tax revenue that occurred last month.

Total sales tax revenue for the year in Reno County is just under $2.7 million. Sales tax revenue for June reflects shopping trends for the month of April.

Sales tax numbers for June released

Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz told Hutch Post Thursday that he's having the first conversation with a couple of developers to figure out if a fairgrounds hotel would be feasible.

"This afternoon, I'm actually meeting with a couple of developers," Schulz said. "We're actually going to talk about a possibility of a hotel on the fairgrounds. I know, originally, previous management had looked at the corner where the current fire station is at, an then attaching it to like the Meadowlark Building for the convention side of it. When you start looking at that, where the new fire station is going, that takes up a big plot of land, that we had to displace quite a few of our vendors, so we're looking to replace that. One of the areas that we're maybe going to look at is over off of Plum, just north of like The Rusty Needle on our Gate 3 area."

If such an idea gets any traction, it would still be quite a lengthy process with several different levels of approvals before anything could even be started, let alone finished.

"First of all, we have to come up with a, is it going to work on our grounds?", Schulz said. "Obviously, being a state agency, we need to make sure that the state is okay with it, because they own all the grounds and all the buildings at the state fair. We have to make sure we've got all of our I's dotted and our T's crossed there, working through our legal team with the Attorney General's office, getting their permission. Then, that developer has to say, yep, I'm ready to go, I've got all the backing. This is what it's going to look like, here's what it's going to do for you and what it's going to do for us. That's going to be something that our board is going to have to look at, that it is not just going to be put up on the grounds with no benefit to the fair, as well."

In addition, if there are additional infrastructure needs at a selected site, there could need to be legislative approval for the funds to make that happen. Schulz is clear that even getting a fairgrounds facility wouldn't solve the hotel issue.

"One hotel is just not going to do it," Schulz said. "We've talked about this many times. Right now, we're going up to McPherson. We're going to Maize. We're filling everything in town here. That's for Fair time. We're actually contacting AirBNBs, VRBOs. We put up a ton of people ourself, let alone the guests that are coming to town, or the ones that can't come to town because they can't find a place to stay and they are not wanting to drive another 25, 30 miles at the end of the day."

Schulz sees the fair as a great destination for those short distance staycations that families often do in times of high gas prices, he just wishes we had more space to help with that.

Schulz: Initial fairgrounds hotel conversations are happening Thursday

The <a href="https://www.kansasstatefair.com/p/manage-events/fair-food--tunes-2022">Fair Food and Tunes event</a> is coming up Saturday, June 25th on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Gates open at 10 a.m., with food and bands starting at 11 a.m.

"You can come and get your Pronto Pup, your roasted corn all of your cotton candy, all that good fun stuff," said Tina Evans with the Fair.

Admission is $5 per person, 13 and up. On grounds parking will be available for $5. <a href="https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/16728/special-events-at-ks-state-fairgrounds">Buy online in advance - $4 gate and $4 parking available through June 24.</a> Also on the Fairgrounds Saturday is the Rock The Fair event.

"We had 38 bands from across Kansas apply," said fair General Manager Bryan Schulz. "Through some voting, we got down to the ten that are going to be here this Saturday. What we'll be doing is, we have three celebrity judges. Those judges along with the audience will have the opportunity to also vote via QR code. Those five will then go on to the Grandstand opening night of the Kansas State Fair."

Country 102.9's Morgan Wilk will be one of the celebrity judges. There will also be great opportunities to get the kids active on the fairgrounds on Saturday.

"We've got the Big Slide open this time," Evans said. "We've also got several different bouncy houses that are coming for the families to come have fun. Get ready to get energized for the Fair."

Other attractions will include the Central Kansas Corvette Association Classic Car Show, EMS vehicle display and Ike The Bison Mascot.

To celebrate, the City, along with Reno County – who celebrated 150 years in 2021 – as well as Hutch Rec, the Hutch Chamber, the Reno County Historical Society, Dillons, and the Cosmosphere, are uniting to host a special community-wide event this summer.

150th Celebration Updates; Submission Deadline Extended to July 8

New Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage is excited for the challenge of leading a district after 17 years as an elementary principal, but he understands that the educational recovery from the COVID-19 years is continuing.

"I don't think we're done seeing the impact of it," Idacavage said. "I think we're going to be cleaning this up for a couple years now, as we get back into, 'the old normal', I guess. It was a rough two years. I was fortunate enough to work with some good people that showed up every day and worked hard for kids and so, we were able to make it through it."

Idacavage is a Caldwell, Kansas native and a Southwestern College grad and wanted to get his family back to this part of the state. He had a chance to do a little chatting with some students recently.

"I stopped for coffee in Haven two weeks ago when I was in town for a meeting," Idacavage said. "A couple high school kids were working behind the counter. They didn't even know who I was. I just asked them what their favorite part about the schools were. They just said the people. Not only the adults, but the kids, how they help each other out. They get along. They may not all be friends, but they're not cliquey and all those things and just the respect the kids receive from the adults in the building."

He is happy with what he's seen in the district so far and doesn't intend to make major changes, as what they are doing seems to be working.

"I wouldn't say I'm nervous about the work that is going to come down the line," Idacavage said. "There's good people in Haven that are in places to help me be successful. I think that when you want to be successful and there are people that want to help you, it's really, really hard to fail."

Idacavage has two children. His daughter will be a freshman and his son a 7th grader in Haven.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program or TEFAP will host a commodity distribution again this Sunday, June 26 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the KMS Warehouse at 3401 East 4th, otherwise known as the old Eaton facility.

The income numbers changed as of June 1. From now on, the maximum gross monthly income for an individual is $1,396, and an additional $492 for each additional person in the home.

Commodities are distributed on a first come, first served basis. You cannot pick up food for another person. There is no need to pre-register. The monthly program distributes about 300 bundles of food each month and serves about 900 residents.

TEFAP commodities available again Sunday

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie will host a Night on the Prairie celebration during the Independence Day holiday on Friday, July 1, starting at 5 p.m.

The day will include food vendors, a number of activities, including a dunk tank and carnival games. The day will also include a ceremony honoring first responders and veterans. Pretty Prairie USD 311 will also host a garage sale.

The evening ends with fireworks starting at 9:30 at the Links at Pretty Prairie. Guests are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and park along Apple Lane or Peach Court.

Donations for the fireworks are appreciated. Guests will also be able to purchase their own fireworks during the day.

Night on the Prairie set for July 1

YODER, Kan. — Two people escaped serious injury when their glider crashed Wednesday morning near Yoder. 

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol a 15-year-old was piloting the two-seat glider when he crashed into a farm field while making a turn on approach toward the runway of the Sunflower Aerodrome Glider Port at the old naval airbase.

The teen pilot and a 71-year-old riding with him were both taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. about a half mile from the aerodrome.

YODER, Kan. — EMS and law enforcement are on the scene of the crash of a glider plane this morning near Yoder.

According to Reno County 911, the accident happened around 11:35 a.m. at 916 E. Red Rock Road just north of the Yoder Glider Port.

Dispatch says one person was uninjured while another did suffer undetermined injuries.&nbsp;

No other details are available at this time and no names have been released.&nbsp;

 </figure>YODER, Kan. — Two people escaped serious injury when their glider crashed Wednesday morning near Yoder. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol a 15-year-old was piloting the two-seat glider when he crashed into a farm field while making a turn on approach toward the runway of the Sunflower Aerodrome Glider Port at the old naval airbase.The teen pilot and a 71-year-old riding with him were both taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. about a half mile from the aerodrome.__________________________________________YODER, Kan. — EMS and law enforcement are on the scene of the crash of a glider plane this morning near Yoder.According to Reno County 911, the accident happened around 11:35 a.m. at 916 E. Glider crashes near Yoder

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department will host the 3rd Annual Bridgebuilder's BBQ. This year's event will be held on Thursday, July 14 starting at 6 p.m. at the Rice Park Community Building at 44 Swarens.&nbsp;

The event is designed to bridge the gap between Hutchinson youth and Hutchinson Police Officers. There will be a BBQ dinner along with other refreshments. The event also includes games, a dunk tank and the HPD drone team. K-9 officer Stitch will also be on hand.

The event is being co-sponsored by Hutch in Harmony and the youth and college members of the Hutchinson NAACP and the Hutchinson Police Department.

Bridgebuilders event set for July 14 in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Republican State Senator Mark Steffen of Hutchinson called in to the KWBW Phone Forum program on Wednesday and made several pointed comments about the FDA and CDC approval of COVID-19 vaccines for children six months to five years of age.

"It's predatory on these kids," Steffen said. "These kids have a survival rate of 99.995% from the COVID virus, which is higher than most elective surgeries."

He considers the policy decision of the Reno County Health Department to stock the Moderna vaccine for young children and offer it to the public to be incorrect.

"Our Reno County Health Department has decided they are going to take the lead in the state of Kansas of promoting these shots for these six-month olds," Steffen said. "It's deplorable. It's wrong. They tell everybody they follow the CDC and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. According to Kansas Statute, they answer to County Commissioners. What they are doing is wrong. As of today, I'm calling for the dismissal of Karla Nichols and Karen Hammersmith. They need to be out of that county health department."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer notes that supply chain issues are even slowing the purchase of fire equipment where the money has already been approved.

"Everything, not just in the fire service, but in general, we're looking," Beer said. "We cannot even buy a chassis, a Freightliner commercial chassis right now. 2022s are gone, 2023s are going to be hard to get. Even building a fire truck. They are talking 28 months to build a fire truck. A few years ago, it took 6 to 9 months."

"You really have to start planning," Beer said. "As simple a thing as tires on the fire trucks, we are preordering, because it takes nine months to get some of the tires. Nine months to a year to get just some of the tires we need for our fire trucks. We really are front loading in our budget, more than we ever have."

It's not the same as it was anytime recently.

"It's just a different philosophy now," Beer said. "A different approach than I've ever seen in my 34-year career."

The Hutchinson City Council and the Board of County Commissioners approved spending $880,000 on three brush trucks, new personal protective gear and bringing existing brush trucks up to current standards this past March.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — First Call for Help is holding its annual backpack registration between now and August 2nd.&nbsp;They annually help between 2,000 and 2,500 Reno County students with supplies each year.

Call 620-669-0159 or come to First Call for Help at 17 West 2nd on Tuesday or Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Wednesday between 9 a.m. and noon.

In order to get a backpack, a child must be enrolled in a Reno County public or private school from kindergarten to 12th grade and must qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Distribution of backpacks is by appointment August 8-12. You must be pre-registered to get a backpack.

The program is subject to funding and availability of the school supplies.

If you'd like to donate money, you can drop it by the office during their open hours, or drop off new, unused school supplies on Tuesday or Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. or Wednesday between 9 a.m. and noon.
