Sarah Diamond with Hospice and Homecare of Reno County updated Hutch Post Tuesday on <a href="https://www.hutchregional.com/hospice-homecare-of-reno-county/events/festival-of-remembrance/car-raffle/">one of the big items for the August 19th Festival of Remembrance</a> at Prairie Dunes.

"We will have an <a href="https://www.hutchregional.com/hospice-homecare-of-reno-county/events/festival-of-remembrance/car-raffle/">opportunity to win a car</a> that's been donated by Mel Hambleton Ford in Wichita," Diamond said. "This is actually Mel Hambleton's 12th year of donating a car for this event. We have some more details. We will have a 2019 Ford Fusion. Some of these cars are really hard to find right now. It would make a really great first car or for a college student or just someone that's looking for a commuter car. It gets 21 miles to the gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. Tickets can be purchased for $25 each for a chance to win. We do have some packages available, so the more tickets you buy, the cheaper they become."

The opportunity for the car will be separate from the opportunity available at the event that night.

"The other raffle items will be the $1000 cash, the $500 gift card to Dillons and the $500 to Jackson Meat."

Details on car for Hospice and Homecare event given

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie USD 311 will have a bond issue on the ballot September 6. USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson made it clear that the things they are looking to do are needs. It starts with windows. 

"Our grade school was built in the 1950s and our windows are still original there," Anderson said. "At the high school, they've been replaced, obviously, because that's a 100 year old building, but when you walk inside our high school now, we've got towels and rags and washcloths all around the perimeter of all of our windows. They look great from the outside. They don't from the inside. We've got a lot of drafting and stuff in there."

"We've got some soft spots and a few leaks, which happens over a duration of time," Anderson said. "We're looking to do that and weatherproofing all of our brick exterior on all the buildings. We also have a great auditorium. A beautiful auditorium, actually, with new seating put in a few years ago. Our ceiling in there, just because of the roof above it needs some repairs and so we're looking to do that."

Also, the state champions in girls basketball need a new home court, for safety reasons.

"We're trying to get a safer competition gym," Anderson said. "Right now, our high school gym is very Hoosieresque, if you will. We love it, so many great memories and just moments in Pretty Prairie history in that gym, but that court is just so narrow. We have to use a restraining line, to play basketball in there."

The steps to the all concrete stands at the current high school gym are just 18 inches off the court and they've had officials trip and people get hurt getting knocked on to the steps from the playing court, so they're looking to flip the court at the middle school and use additional land to the north to allow for putting in concession stands and new locker rooms there to let the competition gym be at the middle school, if the bond passes. 

The taxes would be fairly significant, but they've made it clear what most patrons should pay.

"Overall, it's a $10.4 million bond over 20 years," Anderson said. "If a home is valued at $50,000, the monthly increase for taxpayers is going to be $14. If the home is valued at $100,000, the monthly increase would be $28. Commercial property, if it's valued at $100,000, the monthly increase to taxes would be $60, almost $61. Then, for agricultural land, we did those projections annually per acre. For grassland, it's 41 cents per acre each year. For dry cropland, its $1.62 per acre per year and then for irrigated cropland, it's $3.41 per acre per year."

As of last year, 317 students were enrolled at USD 311.

Anderson: Pretty Prairie bond issue deals with district needs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education ratified its contract with its teachers on Monday. The union approved the deal this past Thursday. Under the new contract, the base pay for teachers will go up $669 to $42,000. The increase will also go across the board. Teachers will also receive horizontal and vertical movement for the upcoming school year, making the overall raise between 3% and 3.5% for all certified faculty and staff.

One of the new items this year for staff is a new parental earned leave. This will allow an employee 10 days per year for parental matters such as child birth, adoption, and foster care matters. The time does not have to be paid back. Also, the contract calls for a solid eight-hour working day and increases the buyback for unused time off from $50 to $100 per day.

The new contract was initially approved back in June after just three negotiation sessions between the district and the union.

Also, Monday's meeting was the annual organizational meeting for the board, where they elected their new President and Vice President.

Greg Meredith was re-elected as the 22-23 President of the USD 308 Board of Education, and Kail Denison was nominated as Vice President.

The Board also established all its regular processes regarding accounting and bill paying for the upcoming year.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting is Monday, July 25, at 6:00 p.m. at the USD 308 Administrative Center, 1520 N Plum.

Contract ratified, USD 308 board organized Monday

NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton USD 373 Board of Education is looking ahead to a bond issue to be put on the ballot in November to do work on Lindley Hall and the Santa Fe 5th and 6th grade center.

The board heard from Representatives from DLR, Gravity Works, and McCownGordon during their meeting Monday night to find out their conclusions from the physical examination of the Santa Fe building.

The cost looks to come in around $6 to $6.5 million, as estimated by the representatives Monday and the board voted 6-1 to continue forward with the process to put this on the ballot, while still looking ahead to a larger bond issue in 2025 to deal with overall growth in the district.

Kan. — Around 100 Reno County residents spent time at the Stringer Fine Arts Center Monday night learning a little bit more about the candidates for Reno County Commission.

Seven of the eight candidates on the ballot were in attendance.

Cris Corey and Randy Parks were there for the District 1 Republican race, which will be decided August 2.

Democrat Michael Jobe was there for District 4, but Republican Mark Reese was not in attendance. Those two will face off in November, but are running unopposed in their respective primaries.

All four candidates for the new District 5 were there, Don Bogner, Tom Collins, Penelope Poitras and Mike Warren are all running as Republicans, so that race will be decided August 2, as well.

Speaking generally, all of the candidates understand that there are areas of the county they don't know about yet, because they aren't already serving. They aren't interested in second-guessing the actions of current commissioners or of the county administrator.

They also have a keen awareness that there are some departments that are led by officials that are accountable to the voters themselves, like county clerk and sheriff and treasurer, and that it's important to build relationships with those people so that you can come to an agreement on their needs.

Also, there are a lot of county functions that are just pass through from the state and those have to be taken care of first because you have to follow statute. After that, public safety and infrastructure come next, with other pressing needs related to economic development and workforce availability, like childcare and mental health and substance abuse issues that they will also have to figure out how to prioritize.

In the main, the seven on the platform Monday are interested in serving the county, and not in longer-term and larger political ambitions, and none of them want to raise taxes.

Hutch Post plans to have each candidate whose race will be decided in August in for a one on one interview prior to the primary.

In-person enrollment for Pre-K through 6th is July 28, 2022, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and in-person enrollment for 7th through 12th, including Virtual School, will be on August 2, 2022.

The enrollment fee for each K-12 student is $65. Optional fees include yearbook and activity passes for students in grades 7 through 12.

School meals will no longer be free for all students effective the start of the 2022-23 school year. Families will need to fill out the Free &amp; Reduced Meal Application in order to be considered for free or reduced meals and textbook fees.

Parents are reminded to check with their pediatricians for any needed vaccinations and physicals. Athletic physicals must be done after May 1, 2022, and be on file before the first day of fall practice.

Students will not be allowed to attend class in August until all required vaccinations and physicals are on file. All student immunization documentation must be on file before students are fully enrolled.

Online enrollment now open in USD 308

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After losing some ground in April, ridership for Amtrak’s Southwest Chief rebounded in May. The Chief totaled 19,200 passengers in May, compared to 14,300 passengers in March.&nbsp;

Amtrak is still struggling to get enough train service personnel rehired to restore all of the carrier’s long-distance routes. That was further hampered by the derailment of the Chief last month that left the rail passenger carrier short on equipment. Amtrak is also suffering from the summer track work season and more, longer freight trains that are making passenger trains late by as much as six hours across most of the long-distance routes.

About 6,000 passengers use Amtrak from the Hutchinson train station each year.

We have turned the calendar to July, and that means different things to different people. For students and teachers July means summer is at the halfway point, and the first day of school is near. For those of us in agriculture it means haying season and watching fall crops grow. In the Farm Bureau world, July is the start of county Farm Bureau annual meetings. County Farm Bureau meetings in Kansas are as unique as the counties themselves. They are held anytime from July until October; the only stipulation is that they have to be done in time to get the voting delegates for that county registered for the Kansas Farm Bureau annual meeting in December. The meetings vary in the type of meal served – anything from catered affairs to hotdog and hamburger feeds or even ice cream socials. Some have entertainment, others feature educational speakers while some are bare bones, business-only gatherings. Recently some counties have gone with more family friendly activities with their annual meeting tagged on at the end. Yes, there is no cookie-cutter county Farm Bureau Annual meeting template. That is the beauty of Kansas Farm Bureau, each county organization is its own unique entity. That is what makes me proud to be a member of Kansas Farm Bureau and the Pottawatomie County Farm Bureau specifically. I have never been involved with an organization that was so grassroots driven and responsive to its members. Every annual meeting reflects the unique personality of an individual county and the members on the board. I have seen traditions developed over many years in some counties and other counties like to mix it up with something new each year. The COVID-19 years saw a lot of change in our county annual meeting with many being held virtual, thank goodness that isn’t the case anymore. One thing that all county annual meetings share is great fellowship among the members. That is where I want to make the plea to you. If you are a member and you have not been to one of your annual meetings, please change that this year. You should receive notice of the meeting from your respective county. Some will be a simple postcard while others will be a newsletter touting what your county has done during the year. If you have not received your notice yet or think you might have missed it, just call your local office and they will be happy to give you the details. I hope you will consider attending, this is a good way to get your toes wet and see what your organization has to offer. I don’t know of a single county that isn’t looking for members who want to be active and this is a good way to find out what it is all about. Who knows you might at least have a great meal or some other experience?

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Prices at the Post Office have gone up. 

The new price for a First-Class stamp is 0.60. An additional ounce of weight in a letter has gone up to 0.24. One ounce metered mail is now 0.57. A postcard stamp is now 0.44 and a one-ounce international letter is $1.40. The new prices kicked in on Sunday, July 10.

The Postal Service generally receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.

Matt Graber with Clay Township told Hutch Post Monday that they will be doing road work on 43rd Avenue from just past the new bridge to the intersection with Lucille starting on Wednesday, July 13th. 

Their plan is to tear out the old asphalt there that was beat up by the heavy equipment during the bridge construction and replace it with concrete.

That section of 43rd will be closed from the 13th all the way through the weekend, with a goal to have the section back open Monday morning the 18th.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce will host a public forum tonight with the candidates for Reno County Commission. 

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the HutchCC campus.

The forum is open to everyone in Reno County. The forum will feature the candidates in the two new districts with Michael Jobe and Mark Reese in District 4 and Don Bogner, Tom Collins, Mike Warren and Penelope Poitras in District 5.

There is also a race for the District 1 seat being vacated by Ron Sellers. Cris Corey and Randall Parks will vie for that seat. They will be available on Monday, as well.

Kan. — The City of McPherson has put up an <a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JV9K8GS">online survey</a> to ask which projects should come first if a <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/eeef467f-014f-4c37-8899-ff3f86d5a2fc">half-cent sales tax is continued with a positive vote August 2</a>.

The city is asking the public to identify two priorities from each category (street, drainage, and public lands). 

The survey is not an exhaustive list but rather identifies infrastructure known as needing repairs or improvements.&nbsp;

They also have blank lines for patrons to add their own suggestions.

USD 373 Newton enrollment assistance this week

NICKERSON, Kan. — They came out to remember and pray for a family. Many from Nickerson and surrounding communities came to Nickerson High School Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil for Trey Jones and his family.

Trey died Thursday from injuries suffered when he and three other members of his family were hit by a car in Louisville Kentucky. High School Principal Rick Blosser was the MC for the ceremony and afterwards talked with us about the tremendous loss the school district has suffered.

“It’s a terrible loss, I still can’t get my head wrapped around it,” Blosser said. “Trey and his family, incredible family, incredible father, incredible husband, he loved his kids.”

Blosser also noted Jones’ strong connections to the school district and community.

“He loved this school, he’s a Nickerson grad,” Blosser said. “There’s so much he has done for his community. I wish we could do more, these are small things of what we really owe Trey”

The turn out Sunday night included coaches, parents, students, not Just from Nickerson but from all around. And there were those who knew the Jones’ who have put so much into the school district and community.

“Obviously a lot of support for the family,” Blosser said. “When they come back they're going to need all of our support…it’s going to be a tough road for them.”

Many just stood in silence, some sang songs while a blanket with paper and pencils were laid out for anyone who wanted to write a message to Trey. The messages were then placed into two burning canisters in a tribute to the family.

Trey's wife, Assistant Superintendent Amy Jones, and their daughter Ava are still hospitalized in Louisville in what Blosser said will be a very long recovery.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a release from Hutchinson police, at 2:16 Sunday morning, they were sent to the area of 20th and Main to check on a man. 

When they found him, he had apparently shot himself. He died at the scene. They do not suspect foul play and will not release the man's name.&nbsp;

Hutchinson police say they believe Sunday shooting was self-inflicted

MCPHERSON COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 7:30a.m. Sunday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Lincoln MKZ driven by Michael L. Ruddle, 73, Galva,&nbsp; was eastbound at 230 U.S. 56 turning into a driveway. 

The driver did not see 69-year-old Timothy W. Mastre of Galva on a bicycle and struck him.

EMS transported&nbsp;Mastre to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;Ruddle was properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP.

McPherson Co. bicyclist hospitalized after struck by car

The goal for Zack and Mira Clobes for their Unite with Ukraine event is an opportunity for people to help while trying to keep the mood positive, which is why they are holding it at Salt City Brewery on July 16. Mira Clobes family is from the more mountainous, western part of the nation.

"My family has been relatively away from that," Mira Clobes said. "All the fighting is concentrated in the east and the south right now."

However, her mother and sister did have to leave the country for their safety and are currently living in the Czech Republic. As her father is of military age, he was not allowed to leave, for Zack, it's another chance to remind the community that they are part of a bigger world.

"We're in a global economy and this is a global crisis," Zack Clobes said. "It's often referred to as genocide. There is an aggressive nation out there that is trying to take what is not theirs. They've made no secret about it."

Donations that night will benefit Medical Aid and the Rebuilding of Ukraine, through the UNITED24 charity foundation. According to their website, UNITED24 was launched by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the main venue for collecting charitable donations in support of Ukraine. Mira Clobes believes Zelenskyy's leadership has been important thus far.

"He has become, I think, my hero, personally and then all of Ukraine's hero," Mira Clobes said. "His stubbornness, I think really helped Ukraine stay strong, because they know that their president is supporting them and is not hiding or anything like that. He is openly walking the streets all the time, making it known that he is not leaving Ukraine or its people. I am so proud of him, and I am proud that the people of Ukraine chose him as president."

Funds will be transferred to the official accounts of the National Bank of Ukraine and allocated by assigned ministries to cover the most pressing needs. Many local businesses have come together to provide raffle items for the fundraiser. The event will begin at 5 p.m. that evening at Salt City at 514 North Main. It can be a come and go event, you do not have to be present to win, just provide your phone number if you win one of the drawings. The Excuses band will play at 7 p.m. that night.

The goal for Zack and Mira Clobes for their Unite with Ukraine event is an opportunity for people to help while trying to keep the mood positive, which is why they are holding it at Salt City Brewery on July 16. Mira Clobes family is from the more mountainous, western part of the nation."My family has been relatively away from that," Mira Clobes said. "All the fighting is concentrated in the east and the south right now."However, her mother and sister did have to leave the country for their safety and are currently living in the Czech Republic. As her father is of military age, he was not allowed to leave, for Zack, it's another chance to remind the community that they are part of a bigger world."We're in a global economy and this is a global crisis," Zack Clobes said. "It's often referred to as genocide. There is an aggressive nation out there that is trying to take what is not theirs. They've made no secret about it."Donations that night will benefit Medical Aid and the Rebuilding of Ukraine, through the UNITED24 charity foundation. According to their website, UNITED24 was launched by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the main venue for collecting charitable donations in support of Ukraine. Mira Clobes believes Zelenskyy's leadership has been important thus far."He has become, I think, my hero, personally and then all of Ukraine's hero," Mira Clobes said. "His stubbornness, I think really helped Ukraine stay strong, because they know that their president is supporting them and is not hiding or anything like that. He is openly walking the streets all the time, making it known that he is not leaving Ukraine or its people. I am so proud of him, and I am proud that the people of Ukraine chose him as president."Funds will be transferred to the official accounts of the National Bank of Ukraine and allocated by assigned ministries to cover the most pressing needs. Many local businesses have come together to provide raffle items for the fundraiser. The event will begin at 5 p.m. that evening at Salt City at 514 North Main. It can be a come and go event, you do not have to be present to win, just provide your phone number if you win one of the drawings. The Excuses band will play at 7 p.m. that night.

For Miss Kansas' Outstanding Teen 2022, Niomi Ndirangu, finding her voice while suffering from epilepsy growing up was a challenge.

"I was diagnosed when I was five years old," Ndirangu said. "As I started growing up, and going to school and being out in my community and doing all the things, I felt that I didn't have the proper care that I needed. Especially in the classroom setting, I would have times where I would have a seizure in class and my teachers would say, oh, well, why are you not paying attention in class? They would notify my mother about it and she would say, did you know that she had seizures? My teachers said no, absolutely not, we had no idea. That, to me, is a huge problem. If you don't know what type of medical risks or what signs to look for when one of your students is having a seizure, that can be seriously life threatening."

Ndirangu's goal is to widen epilepsy training, so that lives can be saved.

"I've been successful with that," I've partnered with The Epilepsy Foundation of Missouri &amp; Kansas. We have successfully trained over 1500 individuals. My goal is to keep doing that. I'm actually holding some seizure first aid events."

Thanks to the Epilepsy Foundation's national organization, there is an online training that Ndirangu is offering July 11 at the Wichita Public Advanced Learning Library and July 18 at the Andover Public Library. It takes about 45 minutes for those events. Ndirangu has been blessed to be symptom-free for some time now, but she said she will continue to advocate.

"Even if I wasn't Miss Kansas' Outstanding Teen or preparing for Miss America's Outstanding Teen, now that I've started this journey of providing training, I would still continue to it. It's truly just a passion for me. I truly believe we are changing people's lives by providing this training."

The Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competition is next month in Dallas.

Miss Kansas Outstanding Teen is epilepsy training advocate

For Creighton University economist Ernie Goss the news is not good as far as the trend of the overall economy.

"We're adding jobs, but unfortunately, productivity is down," Goss said. "When you put those together, the Atlanta Fed came out with their report, their look at the second quarter, which we just finished, they expect that number to come in negative. If that happens to be the case, that would be two consecutive quarters of negative GDP."

That is what most economists would call a recession.

"The inflation number is going to come down," Goss said. "The Federal Reserve is raising rates. They raised three quarters of a percent at their last meeting. They're going to raise rates again on July 27. It may be as high as three quarters of a percent again, then they are probably going to raise rates in September. That's slowing the overall economy, but inflation is still well above what most of us are getting in raises."

That productivity number, output per worker, hasn't been this low since 1947.

"Workers are standing around with these supply chain disruptions," Goss said. "They are waiting on inputs to come in to their company or they are waiting until transportation arrives to send outputs out. That's one of the real keys right now. We need to see those productivity numbers get better. We need to see supply chain disruptions get less."

That's why confidence among those Goss is surveying is particularly low looking out six months, as it may take at least that long to get the supply chain kinks worked out, even if we don't have another COVID spike in the fall and winter.

New Reno County Child Care Waitlist now online

NICKERSON, Kan. — The father of four family members hit by a vehicle in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this week has died.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office says Trey Jones, teacher and track coach at Nickerson USD 309, succumbed to his injuries Thursday afternoon.

Jones, his wife Amy, and daughter Ava, along with the family’s youngest child were all hit by a motorist who drove up onto the sidewalk in the downtown area of Louisville Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

The suspect, 33-year-old Michael Hurley of Lexington, Indiana, has been arrested in the case. Hurley admitted he had just taken Oxycodone before the accident and failed a field test for narcotics at the scene. According to the Jefferson County Commonwealth Attorney's Office, Hurley is now facing an amended charge of murder. He's being held on a bond of $500,000 and has been appointed a public defender in the case. He has a tentative court date set for July 14.

The Jones family was in Louisville for an AAU basketball tournament. Ava Jones had just signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Iowa.
