HAVEN, Kan. — After getting approval from teachers in the Haven USD 312 school district, the board of education put its stamp on a new contract for 2022-23 during a special meeting held Friday morning.

After declaring an impasse, both sides came together on a new contract on Monday. According to Superintendent Craig Idacavage, the new contract provides a 4.9% increase in wages and benefits, including a 3.25% wage scale increase. That pushes the base salary for teachers to $40,473.&nbsp;

The board also approved administrative salaries for the next year during the meeting.

Haven USD 312 School Board approves contract

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — HutchCC is pleased with their enrollment numbers as they get ready to start next week.

"As of close of business yesterday, we were almost dead flat," said President Carter File. "We were down three quarters of one percent, year over year same day, we almost had an identical amount of credit hour enrollment. That's how we measure it. We also measure head count and we were actually up about 3% in head count."

Flat isn't great, but compared to other schools, it's a decent start.

"It's not where we want to be, but it's not unusual to be down," File said. "We're happy that we're flat. Our goal is always to try to increase enrollment, because we want to open up opportunities for students."

The mix of in person and online continues to shift as we come out of the pandemic, according to spokesperson Denny Stoecklein.

"Before the pandemic, our online enrollment was already very strong, north of 30%," Stoecklein said. "About a third of the credit hours we were teaching were online. That has obviously grown throughout the pandemic. Last I looked, we were pushing 40% online. Even those students who take some classes online, I would say it's a strong minority that take a full schedule online."

About 20% of HutchCC's enrollment are students who are still in high school through either concurrent or dual enrollment.

File: HutchCC almost flat enrollment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police responded to a stabbing Thursday night. The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. at 3114 Belmont.&nbsp;

Police report that 37-year-old Brandon Williams was stabbed at that location. Police took 44-year-old Jerry Bullock into custody on suspicion of aggravated battery and for a probation violation. He’s being held on a bond of $60,000.

No other details have been released at this time.

Hutchinson man arrested in stabbing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Captain Brice Burlie with the Hutchinson Police Department reminds motorists that school zones will be enforced once students come back next week.

"They're consistent across the town," Burlie said. "They are 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., then in the afternoon, they are 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The speed limit will go down to a 20 mile per hour zone through all of the school districts. It doesn't matter what the speed limit is before or after. They are all 20 miles per hour."

Traffic fines double in school zones, and improper passing of a school bus is illegal.

"When they have come to a complete stop and put that stop sign out, you have to stop, as well," Burlie said. "You can't pass from either direction. Sometimes, people think that if they are going the opposite direction, that they don't need to stop, but that means the whole entire street where that bus is parked at, with the stop sign out, needs to come to a complete stop, until the stop sign is closed on that school bus."

It's important to pay attention around Hutch High and HutchCC too, even though there technically aren't school zone signs at 11th and Severance.

"That's a big high volume area," Burlie said. "There's Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Community College and then don't forget about Graber grade school up there on 17th. That's the only area in that vicinity that actually has a school zone attached, where the grade school is at."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The next TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) commodity distribution is Sunday, August 21 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The distribution will now be at the KMS Warehouse at 3401 E. 4th Ave., the former Eaton facility. Income guidelines are below.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program is for low-income people of all ages. TEFAP commodities are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no need to pre-register. You are not allowed to pick up boxes for anyone other than yourself.

The monthly program hands out about 300 boxes of food each month.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently bestowed the prestigious Lifeline Gold Plus STEMI Receiving Achievement Award on Hutchinson Regional Medical Center (HRMC) for the second straight year.

A spokesman for the AHA said the award was granted to the Cardiovascular team at Hutchinson Regional for demonstrating a commitment to follow up-to-date, research-based guidelines for treatment of heart disease, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospital.

Aubrey Nuss, Director of Cardiovascular Services at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, said medical issues involving the heart continue nationwide at an astronomical rate. “Every 40 seconds, another person within the United States suffers a heart attack or stroke, the number one and five causes of death in the nation respectively,” Nuss said. “Research shows that patients can recover better when providers, like Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, consistently follow treatment guidelines.”

The AHA Lifeline Award puts the expertise of the AHA to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence-and research-based guidelines.

This year's confirmed Door To Balloon time is 57 minutes, down six minutes from 2020 and well below the national guideline of 90 minutes.

Hutchinson Regional Medical Center annually treats approximately 2,000 heart patients and is served by three Interventional Cardiologists: Drs. Michael Hagley, Jamil Ahmed, and Costy Mattar, along with Dr. Robert Fleming, a cardiothoracic surgeon.

All Reno County students K-12 are encouraged to express in art or writing what makes Reno County special to them.

Submissions are due to the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber office at 117 N Walnut or online at <a href="http://hutchchamber.com/whyiloverenocounty">hutchchamber.com/whyiloverenocounty</a> no later than 5 p.m. on September 23, 2022. Artwork must be hand delivered to the Chamber office.

Chamber holding Art and Essay contest for sesquicentennial celebration

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters dealt with a garage fire Thursday night in the city.

According to a release from the fire department, just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, crews were called out to 913 East 7th for a report of a fully involved garage fire.

Multiple power lines were reported down and arcing due to the fire. Those lines had fallen over wooden and metal fences that appeared to be charged by the lines. Evergy was immediately called, and once they had the power out, firefighters were able to fully extinguish and overhaul the garage. No one was hurt, but Red Cross crews were called to help in the neighborhood until the power could be restored.

Hutch Fire deals with Thursday night garage fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — DECA students at Hutchinson High School will host a Field Night for the Jones Family, a fundraising event, on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Don Michael Field.&nbsp;

Field Night for the Jones Family is a reimagining of a similar event that DECA students hosted in 2021 for the Evans family after HHS coach Clayton Evans was injured. The Jones family from Nickerson was recently involved in an accident, resulting in the death of coach Trey Jones and the injury of his daughter, Ava, and wife, Amy. The field night event held in 2021 was a huge success and DECA students wanted to continue to hold the event annually. As they were planning this year’s event, they learned of the Jones family's accident and decided to dedicate this year’s field night to them.

“Last year, my students wanted to run a fun event to get kids ready for school. When I was injured, those students decided they wanted to make it a fundraiser for my family,” Evans said. “When we were planning this year’s event, we debated on if we should do it for fun, or for a fundraiser. When we heard the news about the Jones family, we knew we wanted to do a similar fundraiser and raise funds for their family.”&nbsp;

HHS graduates Liliana Wilson and Dalton Estes have been heavily involved in the planning of this year’s event, along with Coach Evans, the DECA coordinator for USD 308. Field night will feature yard games, food trucks, a 5K walk, and other activities that are suitable for all ages. There will be a $5 entry fee for the event with other opportunities to donate money in support of the Jones family.

Local businesses have also partnered with the field night planning team to make the event possible. All money raised from the event will go to support the Jones family.&nbsp;

Jones family field night Saturday

MARION, Kan. — The latest advisory from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) shows Marion Reservoir is still under a watch for blue-green algae.

The lake has been suffering from algae blooms since early in the summer. At one point, conditions got so bad that the entire lake and park areas were closed. A watch means that algae is still present in some places and care should be taken when boating or fishing. Contact with the lake is discouraged.&nbsp;

All other lakes in the area are free from any advisories for this week.

Latest report of lakes on algae advisory list

UPDATE: As of 9 p.m.: Reno County Emergency Management has issued a news release on the Pleasant Valley fire from Thursday afternoon. According to Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Reno Kingman Joint Fire District # 1 was called to a grass fire in the area of K-14 and Pleasant Valley Road. Residential structures were threatened, but none were damaged. Dry conditions contributed to rapid fire spread.

 For a period of time K-14 between Fountain Green and Castleton was closed due to heavy smoke conditions across the highway.  Reno County Sheriff's Office, Haven Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol provided traffic control. 

The fire was finally brought under control at approximately 4 p.m.  Units were still on the scene late into the afternoon and early evening for mop up. A Task Force was activated along with mutual aid units to assist in the fire including Reno Harvey Joint Fire District # 2, Reno County Fire District # 3, Reno County Fire District # 8, Reno County Fire District # 9, South Hutchinson Fire Department and Hutchinson Fire Department.     Pretty Prairie EMS and Reno County Emergency Management. 

  A total of sixteen apparatus and support units responded along with 36 personnel.  At the current time, it is estimated 80 acres burned.  Farm machinery was the fire’s ignition source.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The second fire near Fun Valley was called in just before 2:30 p.m. That fire required extensive overhaul and chainsaw operations and crews were on scene there for about three hours.

A third call came in just before 4:30 p.m. to 3501 West 9th, where crews found multiple brush piles and debris on fire spreading through multiple yards. That fire was contained quickly, but required extensive overhaul.

No injuries were reported from any of the fires. Temperatures were in the 90s Thursday afternoon with relative humidity below 30%.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Area fire crews were kept busy with several fires Thursday afternoon. The largest was located long K-14 near Pleasant Valley Road south of Hutchinson. Several calls for mutual aid were made. K-14 was closed for several hours while crews battled the blaze. Later in the afternoon a call came out about another fire located along the Arkansas River just north of Fun Valley. A third call came in around 4:30 p.m. for a fire located on West 9th Avenue also near the river. No word on damage or injuries from any of the fires at this time. No details have been released.

UPDATE as of 4 p.m. —&nbsp;Crews are getting the upper hand on the fires. Crews are having to deal with hot weather and very dry conditions. Temperature is 93 with 24% humidity and winds northeast at 5-15 mph.

___________________________________________UPDATE as of 2:57 p.m.&nbsp; — Officials have opened K-14 again, but motorists should know that a number of fire trucks are still in the area. Crews are trying to get full control of this fire. No other word on the second fire located along the Arkansas River north of Fun Valley at this time. Still no word on damage or injuries.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Another fire has been reported along the Arkansas River, north of 4th Avenue near Fun Valley. Fire crews have been called to the scene. No other information is available at this time.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Area fire crews are battling a major wildfire south of Hutchinson. According to Reno County 911, the fire is located along K-14 Highway near Pleasant Valley Road.

 </figure>UPDATE: As of 9 p.m.: Reno County Emergency Management has issued a news release on the Pleasant Valley fire from Thursday afternoon. According to Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Reno Kingman Joint Fire District # 1 was called to a grass fire in the area of K-14 and Pleasant Valley Road. Residential structures were threatened, but none were damaged. Dry conditions contributed to rapid fire spread. For a period of time K-14 between Fountain Green and Castleton was closed due to heavy smoke conditions across the highway. Reno County Sheriff's Office, Haven Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol provided traffic control. The fire was finally brought under control at approximately 4 p.m. Units were still on the scene late into the afternoon and early evening for mop up. A Task Force was activated along with mutual aid units to assist in the fire including Reno Harvey Joint Fire District # 2, Reno County Fire District # 3, Reno County Fire District # 8, Reno County Fire District # 9, South Hutchinson Fire Department and Hutchinson Fire Department. Pretty Prairie EMS and Reno County Emergency Management. A total of sixteen apparatus and support units responded along with 36 personnel. At the current time, it is estimated 80 acres burned. Farm machinery was the fire’s ignition source.&nbsp;&nbsp;The second fire near Fun Valley was called in just before 2:30 p.m. That fire required extensive overhaul and chainsaw operations and crews were on scene there for about three hours.A third call came in just before 4:30 p.m. to 3501 West 9th, where crews found multiple brush piles and debris on fire spreading through multiple yards. That fire was contained quickly, but required extensive overhaul.No injuries were reported from any of the fires. Temperatures were in the 90s Thursday afternoon with relative humidity below 30%._________________________________________HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Area fire crews were kept busy with several fires Thursday afternoon. The largest was located long K-14 near Pleasant Valley Road south of Hutchinson. Several calls for mutual aid were made. K-14 was closed for several hours while crews battled the blaze. The Hutchinson Clinic announced this week the arrival of Dr. Patrick Houghton through a partnership with the Wichita Urology group.

Dr. Houghton joins the team of Wichita Urology Physicians that have an outreach office within Hutchinson Clinic. 

Dr. Houghton attended the US Air Force Academy and earned his medical doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He completed his Urologic training at the Mayo Clinic.

Hutchinson Clinic adds urologist

HASKELL COUNTY—Two Kansas women were injured in an accident Thursday in Haskell County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a vehicle driven by 53-year-old Philip L. Johnson, of Wichita, was westbound on U.S. 56 and failed to stop at the stop sign at U.S. 83.

The vehicle struck the rear of a semi driven by 45-year-old Noel&nbsp;Brau Ferriol, of Houston, Texas.

EMS transported two passengers in the car, 53-year-old Monona C. Johnson, of Newton and 73-year-old Katherine K. Johnson, of Wichita, to Satanta District Hospital. The drivers and a third passenger in the car were not injured.&nbsp; All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The accident happened just before 2 p.m. on the west edge of Sublette or about 50 miles southwest of Dodge City.

Woman from Newton hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

Hutchinson and Reno County will celebrate 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon over the next 15 days from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

As we turned to the new century, Hutchinson and Reno County continued to grow. Here is a look at the happenings from 1900 to 1910.

1900:&nbsp;Another railroad begins service in Hutchinson as the first Missouri Pacific train arrives in the city. In this modern age of the pandemic, a Pretty Prairie man is arrested for resisting being quarantined for smallpox. Building permits are required for the first time in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Three people are killed when a street car and train collide. City council passes an ordinance slowing trains down through the city and a watchman is posted at the Main Street crossing. Presidential candidate Teddy Roosevelt visits Hutchinson. Population of Hutchinson tops 9,000.

1901:&nbsp;Vern Wiley arrives in Hutchinson from Emporia and teams up with A.C. Rorabaugh to form the Rorabaugh Wiley store. The store is in a small room on Main north of 2nd Avenue. They start with a staff of eight store clerks. Carey salt is shipped by railcar to Winfield. On Jan. 7, Reno County Undersheriff Ed Metz is killed when he’s run over by a passenger train. A public library opened with 500 books. The Fair Association is formed with A.J. Sponsel elected president.&nbsp;

1902:&nbsp;Telephone service reaches Sylvia. The Supreme Court upholds Reno County law allowing the selling of land for non-payment of taxes. The sheriff’s tax sale is still held in October. Reno County farmer William Kilbower is owner of the first automobile in the county. On Oct. 26, the Shaw Theatre opened and the Central Kansas Fair was a big hit, but changes are coming.

1903:&nbsp;The area is hit with two major floods. Reno County High School is built in Nickerson. E.B. Smith is the principal. City namesake C.C. Hutchinson pays a visit to the city. He was living in Portland, Oregon, at the time. City council passes ordinance prohibiting hitching posts downtown. All automobiles must drive on the right side of the road. And, over the objections of the city of Topeka, the process starts for making Hutchinson the home of the Kansas State Fair. Population of Reno County tops 30,000.

1904:&nbsp;Reno County adopts a pension plan for the disabled. The city begins a large-scale paving project of city streets. George Gano built the first concrete grain elevator in Hutchinson. City council agrees to build a flood canal 150 feet wide at the bottom. Andrew Carnegie library opens at 5th and Main. City population tops 11,000.

1905:&nbsp;Harsha Canal is finished at a cost of $30,000. Franchise agreement is granted for the first electric street car. The company was headed up by Emerson Carey. A.D. Vint opens the first dry cleaning plant. New Medora Junction is platted one and a half miles from the original Medora after the Rock Island moves its depot. Turon is named a third class city.

1906:&nbsp;First natural gas is piped to Hutchinson. A city council ordinance prohibits the sale or gift of cigarettes to minors. Hutchinson raises $1,000 to help with the relief efforts of the San Francisco earthquake. The city has all-electric trolley cars now replacing horses and mules. Hutchinson purchases the first automotive fire truck. The city of Partridge is incorporated.&nbsp;

1907:&nbsp;Emerson Carey buys 156 acres of land from Woodson Estate for $20,000 to start a new town southeast of the city. Today, it is Careyville. The Rock Island builds a new depot but it doesn’t have the hotel that was in the plans. Morton Salt plant in South Hutchinson lays claim as largest salt facility in the world. A man in a Ford automobile drives from Kansas City to Hutchinson in 19 hours. It was a hot summer as the temperature hit 118 degrees. It didn’t stay that way as lots of schools and businesses close when natural gas supply proves insufficient when the temperature hits -13 degrees.

1908:&nbsp;Amy Alexander becomes the first woman elected into office as she becomes the Reno County Court Clerk. Hutchinson High School seniors strike when a teacher is suspended. A fire in the town of Abbyville destroys all of the town's stores. A gas-filled airship flies over the Kansas State Fair. A new post office opens. Emerson Carey won the state senate seat. City council passes ordinance for milk inspection. Central State Bank was opened by Sam Puterbaugh.

1909:&nbsp;Sylvan Park established. Speed limit in the city is set at 10 mph. Boxer John L. Sullivan referees a wrestling match in the city. H.R. Nickerson passes through in a private railcar but does not stop to visit the town named after him. Hutchinson Ice Company organized. The company is a subsidiary of Morton Salt. A new bridge is built near Avenue A and Main Street.

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades - 1900s

HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — City of Hutchinson Human Resources Director Tom Sanders said discussions are continuing with the other bargaining units in the city after the city and its <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/ea1d87da-998e-4262-a729-1b639f38c02d">firefighters already got a new contract finished earlier this month</a>.

"We're still negotiating with them," Sanders said. "I think we're getting a little bit closer, at least on the police side. I'll know more next week. I can't really go into a lot of detail, but we're probably going to have another meeting next week with the SEIU group."

The earlier in a budget year that negotiations can be finished, the more flexibility both the governing body and a given union has to make changes to their agreement.

"It's nice if it can be done," Sanders said. "It doesn't always happen. In fact, probably more often than not, it doesn't happen, but once the budget is fixed, it's fixed. We can't really exceed that without going through a bunch of statutory hoops."

Another important point is that with the search for a new city manager going on, that may give the groups some urgency to get things done before there is another leadership change.

I can't really go into a lot of detail, but we're probably going to have another meeting next week with the SEIU group."The earlier in a budget year that negotiations can be finished, the more flexibility both the governing body and a given union has to make changes to their agreement."It's nice if it can be done," Sanders said. "It doesn't always happen. In fact, probably more often than not, it doesn't happen, but once the budget is fixed, it's fixed. We can't really exceed that without going through a bunch of statutory hoops."Another important point is that with the search for a new city manager going on, that may give the groups some urgency to get things done before there is another leadership change.

YODER, Kan.&nbsp; — The public town hall meeting regarding Yoder Rural Water District 101 is set for this evening. The meeting is to cover what the county is doing to mitigate the high nitrate levels in the rural water supply.

“It’s going to explain to the residents what’s going on with their water with the high nitrates,” Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain said. “And for sure that their rates will be going up.”&nbsp;

The high nitrate levels have been an ongoing problem for several years now, and efforts to secure another well free of the contamination have proven unsuccessful. Brittain says that they have several options to fixing the problem but it will involve purchasing water from another source:

“We’ll have to determine what it’s going to cost to get that infrastructure in place,” Brittain said. “I need to do a visit with Haven. They brought up the option that they could sell water, but I don’t know if that is doable.”

Even if the county gets a quick start to fixing the water issues in Yoder, it won't be fixed in a hurry.

“If we buy water from anybody then I have to get a preliminary plan for what it would cost,” Brittain said. “We’d have to apply for a grant to get the money to pay for this and hope to get some forgiveness on the loan.”

That grant cycle has already passed for the year which means it will take more time to get the infrastructure in place. Brittain says it could be as late as 2024 before service could make it to the rural water district.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Journey of Yoder activity center, located two miles north of Yoder. At least two of the Reno County Commissioners are expected to attend, as well as leadership from Reno County Public Works.

Yoder rural water meeting is tonight


MCPHERSON,
Kan. —McPherson County Crime Stoppers are looking for help in finding a scammer that claimed victims last week.

McPherson Police found out about the case last Saturday. 

The person who talked to them received a scam phone call by an individual who claimed to be a family member. The individual advised they needed $12,000 for a bond to get out of jail. The person was then contacted by an individual who claimed to be an attorney who told them to call a bond company in the area. The person contacted Eagle Bail Bonds and he was notified they did not have any information reference the family member being in jail. The reporting party went to the bank and retrieved the $12,000 in cash in $100 bills. That person was later contacted by someone who claimed to be an employee of Eagle Bail Bonds. The person then met with an unknown Hispanic male, who went by the name of Garcia, who drove a 2005-2010 orange 4-door sedan and looked to be approximately 18 years old with short hair. 

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office took a separate report of a similar incident with the same amount of money being scammed.

Kan. — There is a wide spread between gas price averages in central Kansas, depending on where you go to fill up.

"Reno County is $3.65, Harvey County $3.28, that's a big difference between neighboring counties, Sedgwick County $3.42, Rice County $3.61 and Kingman County $3.71."

In McPherson and Newton, prices are already below $3 a gallon. The best way to figure out if it's worth your time to drive to fill up is to know your car's gas mileage.

"Newer cars can give you at least some reasonable estimate of what your gas mileage is on the dashboard readout," Steward said. "Older cars, you obviously have to do that calculation on your own. Keeping your car in good working shape is important."

If you're already headed to an area with less expensive gas, topping off the tank can help some, but generally, it's not cost effective to travel out of your way solely to buy fuel. Also, the fundamentals behind the prices are dropping, so it appears more relief is coming.

"Back in June, we were looking at $130 a barrel crude oil prices," Steward said. "Today, we're in the mid 90s per barrel, so that significant drop has translated to falling prices at the pumps."

Before the pandemic, the fall would traditionally be a time of lower gasoline demand and therefore lower pump prices overall.

AAA: Gas prices vary wildly, but are likely headed down

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Almost 1,000 staff members from USD 308 celebrated the new school year by gathering at the Hutchinson Sports Arena for their annual Convocation event.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Public Schools 150th anniversary was the first in-person convocation event in two years. During the event, staff heard welcome messages from USD 308 Board of Education President Greg Meredith and Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The anticipated announcement of several awards were also given during the Convocation ceremony. Brian McCandless, teacher at Hutchinson High School, was named USD 308 Teacher of the Year. Avery Reveles, interpreter at Wiley Elementary, was named Classified Employee of the Year. Five staff members were also named Davis Teachers of the Year, and were presented cash prizes of $4,000 by Allen Fee and the Davis Foundation. Elementary winners were Carly Torres at Wiley, and Candy Lawrence at Graber. Zach Burkhart, formerly at HMS-7, won in the Middle School category, and Tina Johnson and Daryl Koestel won in the High School category.

Incoming USD 308 superintendent, Dr. Dawn M. Johnson, closed the event with a message encouraging staff members to move forward into next school year with a collaborative spirit, and reminded them that all staff members, regardless of role, play a part in the education of students.&nbsp;

“You are more important than ever. What you do matters. These young people are our greatest hope and you will make a difference,” Johnson said. “We’ll dive into our data, and we’ll assess on the way. Most importantly, we will meet children where they are, and we will take them places they never expected they could go.”.

&nbsp;At the conclusion of the event, staff members had the opportunity to engage with over 20 area businesses and organizations for the first Convocation Resource Fair. The Resource Fair was held in the west foyer of the Hutchinson Sports Arena, where staff received information, prizes, and tools from participating organizations.&nbsp;

USD 308 holds annual convocation

Hutchinson, KS – Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) raised $63,233 in just three days for their back-to-school school supply drive.

Supplies will be distributed Thursday and Friday to over twenty-eight schools in Reno County. 

“We are overwhelmed by the response from our community,” said Fire Marshal Mike Cain. “This is one thing that the HFD can do to give back to our community. There were countless extra volunteer hours of off duty firefighters, their families, friends, and area teachers along with our sponsors RCB Bank and Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. All were key is making this come together, manning doors, and sorting supplies."

HFD’s back to school program is led by the Community Risk Division of the department.  HFD’s back to school program is partnered with teachers at each area school. 

Every spring, area principals are emailed a list of essential school supplies for the upcoming year. They then list the supplies needed and the quantities that they need. Forms are then emailed back to HFD to start the process in motion. 

Supplies are then sorted, boxed, and taken to the schools where the supplies can be used by the teachers. Teachers distribute as needs occur.

"I would encourage you, if you have not nominated a business through that To The Stars awards competition, please do that. Whether it's a women and minority owned business or just your own favorite business in the community or a legacy business, we want to celebrate the stories of businesses right here in Hutchinson and Reno County."

AgTrax, Superior Boiler, Hubco, Ideatek, Genzada Pharmaceuticals and American Packaging were all awarded last year.

"It was a little out of sync, the timing was, because those nominations went in last summer, but we didn't get to have the awards presentation until this spring for those past winners," Teufel said. "This cycle's going to happen a lot faster. The award nominations have been announced. They are due Friday and the awards ceremony is going to be this fall."&nbsp;

A total of 178 businesses across Kansas were honored as part of the celebration in May, including 133 Merit Award winners and 45 Regional Award winners.

Teufel: Department of Commerce award nominations suggested

The 1890s: Things progressed quickly as Hutchinson and Reno County entered their third decade of existence.&nbsp;

1890: A record 10 million bushels of grain were sold through grain elevators in the county. The town of Pretty Prairie relocated closer to the railroad. After approval, the Hutchinson City Council let the first contract for a new sanitary sewer. Nelly Bly made a stop in Hutchinson during her trip around the world. Buhler opened its first school house and the Hutchinson Central School was finished at 5th and Maple.

1891: A deadlocked city council could not agree on a new mayor. After six rounds of voting, the council was split 4-4 on Arthur Little. Mayor R.A. Campbell cast the deciding vote. The four council members who voted no refused to confirm Little as mayor. Campbell then resigned and W.L. Winslow was appointed mayor. The Hutchinson News was sold for $1,900. Haven became an incorporated city and the Supreme Court allowed Hutchinson to continue to dump sewage into Cow Creek.

1982: A fire in Nickerson destroyed four city blocks. The Hutchinson Commercial Club was formed. The organization becomes the driving force in bringing business growth to the city. It is now known as the Chamber of Commerce. Kansas Salt employees strike, demanding they get paid $1.50 for ten hours of work. They were working 12-hour shifts. The mayor of Hutchinson offers aid to the communities of Wellington, Argonia and Harper after a tornado causes significant damage to those communities. Eleven people died. The Dalton Gang tries to rob a bank in Coffeyville. Four members of the gang were shot and killed, including Dick Broadwell of Hutchinson.

1893: Women are now voting but the votes are tabulated separate from the men. More than 1,000 residents left the area during the Cherokee Strip land run. RSVP Table Salt takes first prize at the World's Fair in Chicago. The statewide reunion of the general Army of the Republic meets in Hutchinson. More than 1,000 tents were erected in the city to accommodate the 5,000 visitors.

1894: L.B. Young received a charter to open Kansas Grain Company. An indictment is returned by a federal grand jury against the officers of the defunct Hutchinson National Bank. The men were later acquitted. Salt plants that had been shut down start to reopen again. Hutchinson Salt opens, providing jobs for more than 100 workers. On July 19, a Santa Fe train derailed three miles east of Hutchinson. The Salvation Army was established in Hutchinson. The population of Nickerson falls dramatically after the Santa Fe Railroad moves its roundhouse to Newton because of striking Nickerson workers. Fire in Haven damages the post office and four other buildings.

1895: The State Reformatory opens with 20 inmates arriving from Lansing. One escapes from the prison in a week. A horse-drawn street car ride costs 5 cents. Reno County has the state's largest corn crop at 750,000 bushels. A Santa Fe train was robbed in Sylvia. The Hutchinson City Council approved purchasing privately-owned water works.&nbsp;

There are problems at the reformatory as the board brought charges against Superintendent H.F. Hatch, who was also suspended. Later, the state gives the board at the reformatory the option to resign or be terminated. Hutchinson establishes the first paid fire department. The city discusses whether the Missouri Pacific and Rock Island Railroads are to blame for the high water in the area because their bridges and culverts cannot handle the flow of water. Santa Fe Railroad declares that one of its bridges is not safe because of the high water and is forced to transfer passengers around the area.

Hutchinson and Reno County will celebrate 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon over the next 15 days from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.<figure>

The statewide reunion of the general Army of the Republic meets in Hutchinson. More than 1,000 tents were erected in the city to accommodate the 5,000 visitors.<figure>

An indictment is returned by a federal grand jury against the officers of the defunct Hutchinson National Bank. The men were later acquitted. Salt plants that had been shut down start to reopen again. Hutchinson Salt opens, providing jobs for more than 100 workers. On July 19, a Santa Fe train derailed three miles east of Hutchinson. The Salvation Army was established in Hutchinson. The population of Nickerson falls dramatically after the Santa Fe Railroad moves its roundhouse to Newton because of striking Nickerson workers. Fire in Haven damages the post office and four other buildings.1895: The State Reformatory opens with 20 inmates arriving from Lansing. One escapes from the prison in a week. A horse-drawn street car ride costs 5 cents. Reno County has the state's largest corn crop at 750,000 bushels. A Santa Fe train was robbed in Sylvia. The Hutchinson City Council approved purchasing privately-owned water works.&nbsp;<figure>

Photo courtesy of Steve Harmon.There are problems at the reformatory as the board brought charges against Superintendent H.F. Hatch, who was also suspended. Later, the state gives the board at the reformatory the option to resign or be terminated. Hutchinson establishes the first paid fire department. The city discusses whether the Missouri Pacific and Rock Island Railroads are to blame for the high water in the area because their bridges and culverts cannot handle the flow of water. Santa Fe Railroad declares that one of its bridges is not safe because of the high water and is forced to transfer passengers around the area.1896: Ex-slaves form an organization with 55 members. Reno County hosts its first poultry show. Hutchinson hosts the first meeting of the Kansas Anti-Horse Thief Association.&nbsp;<figure>

Photo courtesy of Steve Harmon.1897: A familiar name becomes part of Hutchinson as local salt plants are purchased and reorganized into one. The purchase is made by Joy Morton. The plants become Morton Salt. Joy Morton is named president of the company. Hutchinson Public Library opens. Hutchinson Bicycle Club is formed. Races are held east of town. A teacher at the reformatory starts teaching socialism to inmates. The board files a complaint. The teacher is a friend of Gov. John Leedy, who says if the board doesn't like it, they can find a new board. Long-distance telephone is established between Hutchinson and Kansas City.<figure>

South Hutchinson closes the post office in favor of the RFD. There was a bank robbery in Hutchinson in 1898 as the State Bank of Hutchinson was held up. The Nickerson Normal College opens. Ladies in the city of Hutchinson organize the Soldier Relief Society. The Elks Club is established. Joy Morton purchases a tract of land for a large salt plant that will produce 500 barrels per day. Emerson Carey and C.S. Winchester worked on building a packing house on South Main.<figure>

Seven inmates of the Reno County Jail dig their way out.<figure>
