NICKERSON, Kan. — Fundraisers continue for the family of Nickerson High School coach Trey Jones.

Amy Jones continues to be watched closely by doctors on her injured legs. According to social media posts, she has undergone another operation to care for what were critical injuries to both legs. Ava continues to rehab and a short video can be seen of her using a walker to regain strength in her legs.

One other note, the University of Iowa Women’s basketball program announced it will honor Ava's scholarship regardless if she is ever able to play for the Hawkeyes. Jones had just committed to Iowa when she was injured.

A volleyball tournament held by the Buhler High School volleyball program served as a fundraiser. The tournament raised a total of $3,945 for the Jones Family Fund.

Jones family continues long road to recovery 

HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — According to Reno County Emergency Management, Reno County Volunteer Fire Districts were kept busy Tuesday afternoon and evening with multiple grass and brush fires throughout the county.

Reno County Fire District # 9 started the afternoon at 1:45 p.m. with the report of a grass fire in the 20000 block of south Woodberry.  Four apparatus with eight personnel responded to the scene and found a working wheat field stubble fire. Fire was controlled with units returning to the station around 2:45 pm.

Reno County Fire District # 4 was paged to a control burn that was no longer contained in the 22000 block of south Hodge Road at 2:30 p.m. Reno Kingman Fire District # 1, Reno County Fire Districts 7 and 8 all provided mutual aid.  Trees, brush, and rough terrain made the suppression effort difficult. Reno County Sheriff's Office provided a drone to better determine where the fire was in the trees. Seventeen apparatus and twenty personnel assisted with the suppression effort.  Mutual aid units cleared the scene around 5:45 p.m.   Fire District # 4 remained on scene until approximately 7:30 p.m.  At this time, the number of acres burned has not been determined.

While returning to the stations Fire District # 8 was paged to a grass fire at Yoder Road and Trails West.

Fire District # 9 responded to assist as available Fire District # 8 units were still a distance away.  A small ditch fire had burned out further to the north along Yoder Road.  A total of 4 apparatus and 7 personnel responded.

At around 6:55 p.m. Fire District # 8 responded to call of smoke with no fire in the area of K-14 and Lake Cable. No fire was found in that location and units continued investigation and found an area that had burned and been put out by a citizen in the 13000 block of S K-14.  Three apparatus and four personnel responded to the call.

Around 8:15 p.m. Reno County Fire District # 4 returned to the area of 18000 west Sun City to investigate and work trees and brush that were on fire. Fire District # 4 cleared the scene around 9:45 p.m.

Kan. — The Hickory Stik BBQ at 25 North Main in Hutchinson is holding a fundraiser Wednesday for the Jones Family.

They will donate 10% of all sales to the family and 100% of the Sales from the special Jones Mac Attack Stacker Sandwich.

The special sandwich is smoked pulled pork topped with mac and cheese and covered with shredded cheese on a toasted bun.

They are also holding a gift card opportunity to win for $150 to the Hickory Stik and $150 to Woodies BBQ in McPherson. 

Tickets for the raffle are $10 a piece or 3 for $25. All raffle proceeds will also go to the family.

Nonprofits will have workshop in Hutch Aug. 26

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for a Wichita man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend and two children has been continued.

Kamden Campos is facing 12 counts including six counts of attempted first degree murder, one count of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of criminal threat. The six counts of attempted murder and the single kidnapping carry sentences of up to 55 years in prison if Campos is convicted.&nbsp;

A pre-trial hearing has been set for Friday Aug. 19 at which time a new trial date could be set. The hearing is part of the regular Friday docket before Judge Trish Rose.

Campos was arrested after allegedly abducting a woman and her family in Wichita. They drove out to Cheney Lake where Campos is accused of making several attempts to kill the victim.

When the woman tried to escape in a vehicle Campos allegedly shot at the vehicle hitting a 2-year-old girl.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A section of West 11th Avenue will be closed off again as part of the ongoing street reconstruction project. Beginning Thursday, West 11th Avenue will be closed to all traffic from Milcon Street through Forrest Street.&nbsp;

This closure is for an emergency water line relocation and the street construction project. There will be no access to driveways on 11th Avenue in this area during this phase of construction. The water line relocation was necessary after the road work revealed that the water main was not buried deep enough. A detour route will be provided. The work is part of an overall renovation and reconstruction of West 11th from the Harsha Canal to Main.

The closure is expected to last approximately seven weeks.

Work continues on W. 11th Ave. project

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will take action on the 2023 budget during the monthly meeting Thursday evening.

The proposed budget will not make the revenue neutral rate for the year, although the mill levy will stay the same. The driving force, as with all government entities and schools, is the increase in assessed valuation for the area, which for the college stands at more than $675 million.

The proposed budget totals $68.31 million on total taxes levied of $14.7 million. The mill levy actually falls from 21.835 to 21.829. The revenue neutral rate is 20.716. The board still has the power to find cuts before approving the budget, but it cannot be increased. The revenue neutral hearing and public hearing on the budget will be held Thursday, Sept. 8.

Thursday's meeting of the HutchCC Board of Trustees begins at 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC Campus.

Rise Up Reno Fundraiser Friday at Sleep Shoppe

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven USD 312 is offering an after school program this year. The program is for students ages 5-12 and will be held at Haven Grade School. Enrollment forms are available at the school office.&nbsp;

The cost is $30 per week or a $10 drop-in fee. Two children will cost $50 per week with a $15 drop-in and families with three students is $80 per week with a $20 drop-in charge. The program features arts and crafts, recreational activities, STEM activities and snacks.&nbsp;

Hutchinson and Reno County will celebrate 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon over the next 15 days from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

As Hutchinson and Reno County moved into its second decade, many events and special visits occurred. In 1880, Ulysses S. Grant visited Hutchinson. A masked ball was held to celebrate George Washington's birthday and the city’s population jumped above 2,000. It was a time of drought and area ministers prayed for rain. It rained eight days later.

1881:&nbsp;Cottonwood Grove was renamed Turon. Wheat continued to be a vital part of the local economy as the harvest topped 204,000 bushels. The first hospital was built in Hutchinson and telephone lines were erected from Hutchinson to Arlington. The assessed value of Hutchinson climbed to $720,000 while the real estate value for taxation was $170,000.

1882:&nbsp;The first opera house was opened in Hutchinson. The price of a stagecoach from Hutchinson to McPherson was $2 and the first sugar factory was built. A train crash near what is now known as Yaggy killed five people. And it was the year the city of Hutchinson purchased its first fire engine and started a volunteer fire department.

1883:&nbsp;The first Amish community was established near Yoder. One hundred Mennonite families also settled southwest of Hutchinson near the community of Arlington. While many only know of one newspaper in town, The Hutchinson News, there were actually four newspapers in town in 1883.

1884:&nbsp;Hutchinson continued to modernize. Wooden sidewalks were phased out as the city council banned all wooden sidewalks for stone or asphalt. The first stone-paved road was also established. And the city of Hutchinson grew by three residents as the first set of triplets were born. There was a town called Netherland in Reno County in the 1880s, but in 1884 it was renamed Lerado.

1885:&nbsp;The city of Hutchinson is selected as the site for the state reformatory. Plevna gets its first school built. And since streets were being paved in the city, the first curb and gutter system was ordered by the city council. The council also passed an ordinance to provide a water system for the entire city. The Main Street bridge over the Arkansas River was finished at a price of $24,000. The Hutchinson Daily News started Aug. 17.

1886:&nbsp;Weather headlined the year when a blizzard hit the area. Mail deliveries (from Newton via stagecoach) were stopped for three days and coal supplies began to run low for residents. Hutchinson Water, Light and Telephone was chartered as a business in Hutchinson. We have Blanchard Street in South Hutchinson these days. It is named for Ben Blanchard, who founded the city of South Hutchinson in 1886.

The town of Reno Center moves closer to the Rock Island Railroad and becomes the town of Partridge. The community of Haven was also laid out in 1886. Despite efforts to control flooding in the city, Cow Creek puts portions of Hutchinson and Reno County under water again.

1887:&nbsp;Ben Blanchard, who founded South Hutchinson a year earlier, hits a salt deposit while drilling for oil. The site is now a small monument in South Hutchinson. The first mail delivery was established in 1887 with four letter carriers. Mule-drawn trolleys were also established in Hutchinson and the city got its first electric street lights. Two new towns started to develop in the county. The town of Langdon was platted and the town of Medora was registered. And the first Rock Island train reached Hutchinson. The Rock Island served Hutchinson until 1980. It's now run by the Union Pacific. The city also established its first sanitary sewer system at a cost of $40,000.

1888:&nbsp;Abbyville was incorporated and the Hamburg post office was opened. The town later became Buhler. The first salt is produced by using brine wells to bring the salt up from underground. Ten plants immediately spring up as salt becomes a booming business in Hutchinson. The Barnum and Bailey Circus came to Hutchinson. More than 30,000 attended. It was also the year that the Hutchinson Stock Yards opened.&nbsp;

1889:&nbsp;As the decade closed out, a familiar name took over the telephone system in Hutchinson when Bell Telephone purchased Hutchinson Telephone. The takeover brought phone service to Hutchinson from El Dorado, Wellington, Arkansas City and Wichita.

And, not so uncommon today, in 1889 there was a railcar shortage that slowed the shipment of the wheat harvest. While wheat was big in the area, the salt business was growing quickly as more than two million barrels of salt were shipped out of Hutchinson.

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades - 1880s

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners heard information for a grant proposal that would pay for wildfire mitigation during Tuesday’s regular meeting. The matter brought up the continued difficulties fire crews have in fighting such fires due to factors beyond their control.

In May, commissioners approved Reno County Emergency Management to submit a letter of intent to the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) for wildfire mitigation funding. The county has the opportunity to receive more than $1.3 million worth of grant funding with the county’s share adding another 25% or another $323,000 for a total of over $1.6 million. The funds could clear out 1,375 acres of areas that are high risk for wildfires. Commissioner Ron Hirst said this is something that private landowners need to have a stake in and not the county.

“I think it’s an individual parcel owner's responsibility,'' said Hirst. “I think it's this individual's putting up that 25% rather than the taxpayer.”

Hirst added that it really comes down to whether an individual cares about the land he owns.&nbsp;

Emergency Management Director Adam Wieshaar says it would be difficult to mitigate individual properties stating that it would not remedy the fire danger.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a big benefit to us picking and choosing different parcels,'' Weishaar said. “I think our biggest benefit is to do a large swath of the county where it is essentially going to be a large (fire) break where we know this area is taken care of.”

Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer agreed with Weishaar, noting that some landowners like the heavy cedar tree growth, which he compared to having a truck with jet fuel sitting next to your home during a fire. Beer says that his department needs to be able to defend properties and have ways to attack fires.

“We just pick and choose a property here and a property there because that’s not going to do anything for us,” Beer said. “We’ve got to develop a corridor, maybe it's from the city limits down to Buhler/ Haven Road down 30th Street where instead of an 80 foot buffer we’ve got like a 500 foot buffer working with landowners…so we’ve got a defendable space where we can cut these fires off.”

Commissioner Daniel Friesen noted that he doesn’t want to see more control over county residents but said that he is getting concerned about putting lives and property at risk because residents don’t want to take action to protect their homes.

“I don’t like it, but I don’t want to see the local government continue to risk resources, funding, people and homes and not address this more specifically,” Friesen said. “Especially in these corridor routes, if these landowners don’t want to give us a buffer, we have to create a resolution to deal with it.”

The county has been looking for ways to lessen the wildfire danger especially north and east of Hutchinson where several fires caused considerable damage including the March 5th Cottonwood Complex fire that claimed one life, destroyed 35 homes and a number of outbuildings.

The next event is Tuesday, August 16 at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Pavilion. Attendees will hear from Dr. Rogena Johnson about her new practice at Hutch Regional and the importance of routine preventative care and screenings.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. on the 16th with a free sandwich, chips, cookie, and drink available to the first 150 guests at 5 p.m. The lecture begins at 5:20 p.m. with Q&amp;A afterwards.

Johnson to speak at hospital First Course event Aug. 16

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Skip Wilson with the Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club talked this week about the many mentors he's had that helped him succeed in his time in Hutchinson.

"Les Keller, Les was probably my first mentor when he ran the recreation commission, I remember him telling me, you make sure that, as you move on with your career, you surround yourself with quality people," Wilson said. "What he meant by that, I found out later was, not the best in the field, that's nice to have, but he said, just good people, people that have a heart, people that believe in your mission and people that will go to bat for those young people that you are working for."

Wilson said the goal to give kids some individual that they can feel safe with reaches back all the way through his career.

"We started our program, you've got to understand, before there was Boys and Girls Club, there was Kids After School," Wilson said. "Kids After School was in a ton of elementaries within our community and what we wanted to do was just keep the kids safe after school. That was our mission. We wanted to keep the kids safe after school. We knew that the toughest times for our young people even now was like that 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. We wanted to keep them safe, and so what happened through that, was we realized that we've got them at some peak times to where we can actually make a difference and we can do it in a fun and educational way that they will enjoy."

Having the heart to make that one on one connection is the key to being a successful Vision Leader, as Wilson sees it.

"Where's your time for these vision leaders to just sit down with that young person and communicate with them, to talk to them and so forth?," Wilson said. "You can do it through games, but it's also important, you know, to have those little one on one conversations. I think, through our tenure that we've had, we've seen that a lot. We've told our vision leaders, that's okay. If you have to take away from a game and you have to go out because that young person needs you, you go, because that young person is the most important."

Wilson knows that it doesn't matter which of the staff finds a connection with an individual kid, but just that someone does, that there is someone that child trusts when it comes time to make the big decisions in life, because having that kind of relationship is the key to making sure that whatever a club member's passion is, that they can find a way to follow it.

"What he meant by that, I found out later was, not the best in the field, that's nice to have, but he said, just good people, people that have a heart, people that believe in your mission and people that will go to bat for those young people that you are working for."Wilson said the goal to give kids some individual that they can feel safe with reaches back all the way through his career."We started our program, you've got to understand, before there was Boys and Girls Club, there was Kids After School," Wilson said. "Kids After School was in a ton of elementaries within our community and what we wanted to do was just keep the kids safe after school. That was our mission. We wanted to keep the kids safe after school. We knew that the toughest times for our young people even now was like that 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. We wanted to keep them safe, and so what happened through that, was we realized that we've got them at some peak times to where we can actually make a difference and we can do it in a fun and educational way that they will enjoy."Having the heart to make that one on one connection is the key to being a successful Vision Leader, as Wilson sees it."Where's your time for these vision leaders to just sit down with that young person and communicate with them, to talk to them and so forth?," Wilson said. "You can do it through games, but it's also important, you know, to have those little one on one conversations. I think, through our tenure that we've had, we've seen that a lot. We've told our vision leaders, that's okay. If you have to take away from a game and you have to go out because that young person needs you, you go, because that young person is the most important."Wilson knows that it doesn't matter which of the staff finds a connection with an individual kid, but just that someone does, that there is someone that child trusts when it comes time to make the big decisions in life, because having that kind of relationship is the key to making sure that whatever a club member's passion is, that they can find a way to follow it.

Kan. — Soroptimist International of Hutchinson is hosting LUNAFEST, a regular event returning for 2022.

"It will be back this Friday at the Hutchinson Fox Theatre," said Debra Teufel with the Soroptimist Club. "I have had the opportunity to preview the film series. If you haven't heard of LUNAFEST, it is a film series by women for women and diverse audiences. This year it is amazing. There are a diverse group of eight filmmakers that have brought really inspirational stories and everyone's going to enjoy it. We hope people will come out on Friday for it."

The stories cover a range of themes including work, family, natural disasters, and the power of friendship and creativity. Friday's LUNAFEST screening at the Fox is the only screening in Kansas outside the Kansas City area.

"Doors will open at the Fox at 6 p.m.," Teufel said. "Tickets are just $20. There will be some time to socialize and find your group and find your seats. Then at 7 p.m. the film series will kick off. This year, we also have a special feature. One of the filmmakers is going to be live streaming and having an opportunity for questions and answers about what inspired her to make the film she made."

Emily McAllister, director of the festival film Wearable Tracy will have the Q and A session. Complimentary wine (for 21 &amp; over) or beverages, appetizers and desserts, will be served. It's a great opportunity for women 13 and older to come together for an evening of films that will make you think.

"It starts out with something that wouldn't surprise you, inspired by the pandemic," Teufel said. "Then it goes into stories of immigrants to our country and their experiences here and how they have felt as immigrants. I think it's just, if you haven't ever walked in those shoes, this is a good opportunity to walk in the shoes of someone with a different perspective. There's also a great story that will hit really close to home, a family that was impacted by a wildfire. It's really a story of a dad and his daughter and her coming home to see what had happened as a result of a wildfire in their community. I know that's going to hit home right here in Hutchinson."

Proceeds from LUNAFEST benefit women with extreme financial hardship in Reno County through the Soroptimist Emergency Fund and Chicken &amp; Egg Pictures, a nonprofit organization that supports women filmmakers.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The canvass of votes from the Aug. 2 primary in Reno County will be delayed. Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager asked for the delay in the canvass due to a hand recount of the advance walk-in ballots. The canvass will now take place Monday, Aug. 15 at 9 a.m.&nbsp;

A random audit of 11 precincts on Friday found discrepancies in numbers related to the Republican State Treasurer's race. The election day voting audit was correct, so the hand count of about 3500 ballots continues. That should be finished by the end of the day Tuesday, according to Fager. That count has pushed back the department's resolution of provisional ballots. For that reason Fager asked that the canvass be pushed back to the new date.

The audit did not reveal any problems with any of the other races in the primary, though all races are counted again for the walk-in advance ballots.

Reno Co. canvass of votes moved to Monday Aug. 15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In brief comments before the USD 308 Board of Education on Monday night, Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson updated them on a discussion she had with the Boys and Girls Club about Avenue A school.

"I have met with Lance Patterson and Skip Wilson of the Boys and Girls Club," Johnson said. "They originally talked about purchasing Avenue A school. They came and talked with me. They are withdrawing that offer to purchase. They would still like to partner, so we have met and walked through Avenue A, just to kind of take a look at that, so I will continue to work with them and bring an update back to the board."

The board also heard a presentation on budget planning Monday night.

Sheila Meggers, Assistant Superintendent of Finance, led board members through a presentation about district budget planning and the Building Needs Assessment that administrators worked on for the upcoming year. Board members were able to ask questions and give input through the presentation.

Also, the board approved an increase to the contract with Durham School Services of 6.1%, or a cost of $20,323 to the school district. Normally, a 3% increase is what is in the regular contract, but Durham asked for the additional funds so it can pay drivers, monitors, mechanics and administrative staff more.

The board also approved adding a second school resource officer in the district. 

"The MOU would be that we would have the same MOU we have now with the city," Johnson said. "We would pay 50 percent of the salary. All the costs for uniforms, all the costs for training, all the costs for providing a vehicle, all the costs for radios, I mean everything else, the city and the police department would be paying for. We would just provide that. I believe it's right under $40,000."

Though specifics are still to be worked out, when 308 had two officers before, the second one was based out of the middle schools and then traveled to schools throughout the district as needed. That was the intent of the board as they passed the motion on Monday.

The board also approved a Title I agreement for the students that go to Holy Cross Catholic School and live in USD 308. USD 308 has an employee that provides those federally mandated services at that school. The agreement is so that USD 309 and 313 can help pay for that employee, if funds are generated for those districts by students that attend Holy Cross.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting is Monday, August 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the USD 308 Administrative Center, 1520 N Plum.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie USD 311 School District is hosting a series of community meetings to answer any questions patrons may have regarding the upcoming bond election.

Other meetings will be held Tuesday, Aug 16, at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 12 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. The bond election is Tuesday, Sept 6. A resolution was passed by the board on a $10.4 million proposal that will be paid out over 20 years.

The proposal includes a number of needed high-end maintenance items such as new windows, weather proofing the brick exterior and new roofs for all three school buildings, plus repairs to the middle school roof and ceiling over the auditorium. It also includes a major renovation to the middle school gymnasium including new locker rooms, a concession area and restrooms. If approved, the middle school gym would become the main athletic facility for the schools.&nbsp;

The tax increase would amount to $14 per month on a $50,000 home; $28 per month for a $100,000 home and $42 per month for a $150,000 home.

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp; The official resolution to set a bond election for Lindley Hall and Santa Fe school in Newton happened Monday night at the USD 373 Board of Education meeting. The bond election will be on the general election ballot on November 8.

The board heard July 25 from Representatives from DLR, Gravity Works, and McCownGordon during their meeting to get their best estimates for work on Lindley Hall and the Santa Fe building.

The numbers given to the board were between $5,455,000 and $6,030,000 for Lindley Hall and between $1,855,000 and $2,055,000 for Santa Fe, depending on what rate they are able to get when the bond is marketed, so the total if all projects are bonded would be somewhere between $7,310,000 and $8,085,000.

This would likely push the next major bond for the district out another year from 2025 to 2026.

Official bond election resolution passes Monday night in Newton USD 373

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. The city of Hutchinson was founded in 1871 when frontiersman Clinton "C.C." Hutchinson contracted with the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atchison,_Topeka_and_Santa_Fe_Railway">Santa Fe Railway</a>&nbsp;to make a town at the railroad's crossing over the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkansas_River">Arkansas River</a>. The town actually sprang up about one-half mile north, on the banks of Cow Creek, where a few houses already existed.&nbsp;

1871:&nbsp;JHD Rozan and Luther Dodge established the first two settlements in Reno County. The first school was also established and the first herd of cattle came up the western leg of the Chisholm Trail.

1872:&nbsp;The first city election was held. Taylor Fitch was elected mayor with 71 of the 88 votes cast. The city council was made up of Ed Wilcox, D.M. Lewis, R.P. Baily, G.A Brazee and John McMurray. Their first order of business was to adopt the city seal.

1873:&nbsp;The first wheat was planted in the area. The post office was established in what would become the town of Nickerson. Huntsville, Castleton, and Reno Center all popped up as communities. Reno Center is now known as Partridge.

1874:&nbsp;George Shears started a contracting business in the city. Russian Mennonites arrived by train and settled into an area northeast of Hutchinson. The area would become the town of Buhler. The first bridge over the Arkansas River, which was started three years earlier, was finished. The first municipal band was started.

1875:&nbsp;Hutchinson was known for its clean living and effort to open a saloon and end prohibition in the city was challenged often. In 1875, the first request to open a saloon was denied by the city council. The population of Reno County topped 5,000. It was also the first year of the Reno County Fair and the first flour mill opened. It was also the year the first drug store opened in the city.

1876:&nbsp;In what has been a staple of the area for so many years, the First Bank opened its doors. It would become known as the First National Bank. The first YMCA was established and the city became the center for wheat shipping and trading as crop numbers increased. The Water and Power on Mill Race was constructed. The building is now the Stevens Building and is the oldest standing building in the city today.

1877:&nbsp;The year saw the first of two major floods along Cow Creek. Water was in the streets for two weeks. Following the flood, the city council approved bonds to help build a series of flood-control levees. The population of Reno County continued to climb quickly as the population grew to more than 8,000. The city of Arlington was also founded in 1877.

1878:&nbsp;Voters approve to keep prohibition in place in a close vote — 1,006 vote yes and 932 vote no. Winter wheat tops $1.20 a bushel and the town of Plevna is established after a trading post is turned into a post office. In an odd event, a newspaper editor was taken by Topeka authorities for a libel complaint. Area residents set off after the Shawnee Co. authorities in a railroad hand car and caught them in what is now known as Burrton. They got their editor back and the lawmen were arrested in Hutchinson.

1879:&nbsp;As the decade closed out, Nickerson became an incorporated city. The population of Hutchinson continued to grow to 1,740 and the Board of Trade was established. A business school was also established, which became known as the Salt City Business School.

The population of Reno County continued to climb quickly as the population grew to more than 8,000. The city of Arlington was also founded in 1877.<figure>

Winter wheat tops $1.20 a bushel and the town of Plevna is established after a trading post is turned into a post office. In an odd event, a newspaper editor was taken by Topeka authorities for a libel complaint. Area residents set off after the Shawnee Co. authorities in a railroad hand car and caught them in what is now known as Burrton. They got their editor back and the lawmen were arrested in Hutchinson.<figure>

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Residents who wish to have an item placed in the Hutchinson sesquicentennial time capsule have until Tuesday afternoon to do so. Items can be dropped off at the Reno County Museum Tuesday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Aug. 15 has been proclaimed to be Hutchinson Day. To celebrate, the public is invited to City Hall for an historic time capsule ceremony. That is where a time capsule buried at City Hall in 1972 will be opened. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. outside City Hall for the unearthing of the centennial time capsule and the placement of the sesquicentennial time capsule. Following that, guests will be invited to see the opening of the centennial time capsule.

The centennial time capsule, buried outside City Hall since the building was first completed in 1972, will then be unpacked by Reno County Museum staff in the council chambers. Those who wish to watch are welcome to sit in the gallery or watch the live stream online. 

The contents of the centennial time capsule will then be moved to the Reno County Museum, where they will be cataloged and prepared for display. Recipients of letters from the 1972 time capsule will be contacted by the museum.

Hutchinson time capsule ceremony is Aug. 15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners will once again look over the 2023 budget as they wrestle with how to get the budget closer to a revenue neutral rate without hurting the bottom line when it comes to services.

At the July 26 meeting, the commission requested a spreadsheet to be sent to them with some of the possible cuts, along with a range and recommendations from County Administrator Randy Partington. The intent of the spreadsheet was to let the commission individually review the spreadsheet, and come to Tuesday’s meeting prepared to discuss and debate possible cuts.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As it stands now, the budget totals $81.77 million on total taxes levied of $26.67 million. That puts the county above the revenue neutral rate. The board has been mixed on whether to try to hit that number, which would mean about $1.3 million in cuts, leave the budget as is, or try to at least trim some of the budget off without hurting services too much.&nbsp;
