HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian School is ready to begin its parking lot work later this fall. 

The school said Monday that the FORWARD Campaign has officially surpassed the $1 million dollar mark in funds received. 

Thanks to a recent major gift, the parking lot work will begin this fall in late September or early October.

The next phase of the project will require additional funding. According to the school, there are&nbsp;111 parking spaces planned for the new paved parking area. 

With a $2,500 gift for each space, the school will have the funds needed to complete Step 2 and 3 of the parking lot project.

CCS reaches goal to begin parking lot work

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a text message from State Rep. Paul Waggoner to Hutch Post Monday, Randy Parks appears to have won the Reno County District 1 Republican primary.&nbsp;

Parks ended up with a two-vote lead over Cris Corey after the counting of provisional ballots Monday.

Corey has until 5 p.m. Tuesday to ask for a recount, if he so chooses.

The winner of the primary is the likely replacement for retiring commissioner Ron Sellers, as there is no Democrat in the race, though there can be a write-in campaign waged in the general election.

Hutchinson and Reno County will celebrate 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

World War II was upon us and, once again, Reno County does its part serving the country. A new way to enjoy motion pictures begins to crop up around the county and the home of the Blue Dragons and Salthawks is born.

1940:&nbsp;One of the great annual events still to this day in Reno County, the Pretty Prairie Rodeo becomes an annual professional event.

The home of the Blue Dragons and Salthawks becomes a reality as Gowans Stadium is built on the HutchCC Campus.

The National Guard is mobilized in Hutchinson as the war in Europe escalates.&nbsp;

The new post office is dedicated in the city.

Walter Schellenberger is elected president of the Hutchinson Red Cross. The agency would play a big part in WWII.

Leo Collingwood of Collingwood Grain is killed in an elevator accident.

More than 8,000 Reno County men registered for the draft, 36 applied for service.

The first Reno County men leave for service in WWII at Ft. Leavenworth. They are Charles Erker, Clare Conover and Nathaniel Lockett.

The local National Guard mobilizes at the Kansas state fairgrounds to go to war.

1941:&nbsp;The Civilian Defense council is established in Reno County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Seven boys are indicted at Hutchinson High School after they are caught selling counterfeit coins for coin-operated games.

Cow Creek floods once again as a levee gives way. Residents are told to boil water before drinking.&nbsp;

More than 125,000 attend the Prairie Pow Wow, which is a multi-day event that brings executives of large companies and dignitaries to the party.

More than 330 men board a train for Arkansas when the 35th Division is mobilized. Women and Wives of the 35th Division organization is&nbsp; established.

The 1941 Farm and Home event fills up the Convention Center with music and entertainment.

The city of Hutchinson celebrates its 70th birthday with a three-day event in April.

The first war salvage drive in the county is held by the Junior Chamber of Commerce to collect aluminum for the war effort.

The boys work committee of the YMCA recommends fees be dropped and boys be given free membership.

Another major flood hit the area in October.

Dec. 7, 1941 — Eight Reno County soldiers are killed in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor:

Robert E. Clark: Member of anti-aircraft unit.

Camillus O’ Grady: Yeoman on an unidentified battleship.

Stephan Stucky: Water tender and brother of James.

Nine others survive the attack. They are:

Edgar Kentfield Jr. was the last survivor of Pearl Harbor alive in Hutchinson when he died Aug. 11, 2015.

1942:&nbsp;Cessna begins to build a factory in Hutchinson. The facility is built in just 69 days and eventually is used to build gliders that would be used in the D-Day invasion.

A Hutchinson girl marries her sweetheart by telephone. He is stationed in California.

The governor proposes building a new training facility near Yoder. Pilots begin training in the area even before the naval air base is finished. The Hutchinson Airport is used for training, the state fairgrounds are used for housing and an office at the First National Bank is used for headquarters.

Reno County collects more than 2,600 pounds of scrap metal for the war effort.

Hutchinson and Reno County experience the first blackouts as part of the wartime air defense system.

Citizens are called on to volunteer as air raid wardens. More than 1,200 volunteer their service to the effort.

Melvan Zumwalt of Hutchison becomes the 1,000th naval recruit in the city.

Nov. 5 was the day the first naval recruits arrived at the new naval air base near Yoder.

1943:&nbsp;The co-ed volunteers organization of Hutchinson sells more than $429,000 worth of war bonds.

The Red Cross raises more than $53,000 for the war effort.

The Hutchinson community buys more than $2.8 million in war bonds in 1943.

On March 10, all of the city churches gather together at the Fox Theatre for a community church service to open the season of Lent.

The city commission grants a franchise agreement to McVey Brothers for a motor bus service system.

A special vote on a $2 million bond issue for a new municipal building is voted down by the public.

The navy patrol frigate USS Hutchinson is dedicated. The vessel did see combat during WWII.

Nickerson native Howard Randall downs 12 enemy planes as a tail gunner on a B-17 during WWII.

Two crewmen are killed when a naval training plane crashes near Rayl's Hill.

Five children die from infantile paralysis. Sixty more are hospitalized and facilities are closed to children under age 16. The start of school is delayed.

With the naval air base, school enrollment in the area jumps by 1,000 students in a single year.

Wendell Godwin replaces longtime superintendent of schools J.W. Gowans.

Sherman Jr. High School students are recognized for buying more than $20,000 worth of war bonds.

1944:&nbsp;More than $5 million in war bonds are sold.

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades - 1940s

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As the city of Hutchinson prepares to celebrate its sesquicentennial, a group of citizens and city officials gathered at city hall to open the centennial time capsule that was buried Aug. 10, 1972. The well-rusted metal box was unearthed and then opened in a special ceremony at city hall.&nbsp;

A special proclamation was read by Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho, proclaiming Aug. 15 as Hutchinson Day. After the ceremony, she talked about how special it is to look back and into the future.

“It’s always fascinating to see what was important to people in prior generations, so it’s an exciting time to get a snapshot of what our community found interesting,” Piros de Carvalho said. “I think it really is such a privilege of providing a snapshot of the next 50 years.”

The time capsule offered up banners, a phone book, a license plate honoring the centennial and many letters. Most of the items made it through the past 50 years in pretty good shape.

“The things you see the most problems with are the metal items,” Reno County Museum Curator David Reed said. “The license plate caused a little bit of moisture damage to some of the envelopes, and some of the clasps that held some of these envelopes also got a little bit of moisture over 50 years . . . they actually seemed to make the journey quite well.”

Now that the items have been collected, Reed says the museum will go through the process of cataloging them.

“We’re going to stabilize it, curate it, get it all organized and cataloged,” Reed said. “The letters that are here, we definitely need to reach out to the people that they’re addressed to.”

For those who did have letters written, it will be a little time before they can find out what's inside.

“They’ll come to the museum and have them open it,” Reed said. “If they want to keep it because it’s addressed to them that’s one thing, if they want us to scan it and keep a copy of it, we’d love to do that. That will be up to the descendants as soon as we track them down.”&nbsp;

The capsule contained letters, a phone book, newspapers, a Montgomery Ward catalog, a commemorative liquor canister, a banner celebrating the centennial, a letter to the president, and other items. As the old time capsule was taken out, a new one was put in its place to be opened Aug. 15, 2072.

Kan. — Drivers are advised that from August 20 through Labor Day, September 7, the Reno County Sheriff’s Office and Hutchinson Police will join other police agencies across Kansas in a crackdown aimed at removing impaired drivers from the roadways. 

During "You Drink. You Drive. You Lose" extra officers and deputies will be working traffic enforcement in hopes of reducing the number of impaired drivers on the road, the accidents they can cause, and the fatalities that result.

Funding for the campaign comes from a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administered by the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Annual traffic enforcement campaign starts this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The time capsule that was buried at the new Hutchinson city offices in 1972 was opened today at a special ceremony at city hall. It included letters magazines and other artifacts from the time. The ceremony also included the placing of the sesquicentennial time capsule to be opened in 2072.

Most of the items were in good condition considering they are in a metal box for 50-years. Here are some of the photos from todays ceremony.

Retirement reception for Wilson is Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Reno County has qualified for $1.6 million in wildfire mitigation funding, it's now a policy decision to make to decide whose land should get the help.

"Ideally, we'd go back through history, go through 20 or 30 years of data of where these wildfires have really wreaked havoc on our community and caused the most issues," Weishaar said. "We'd figure out some sort of point where firemen can make a stand, make sure that they can try to get the fire out without causing the major damage. Some of the areas we are looking at are possibly down the 30th Street corridor from K-61 to Buhler Road and also some areas around the Highlands."

The hope is that this money can aid work these areas are already doing.

"We'd like people to take care of their land," Weishaar said. "We'd like them to take care of their own property, but we've seen it time and time again, as soon as a fire comes through, it's a priority for a couple of months, then it's kind of out of their mind and they don't focus on it any more. Why we would look at 30th Street or something off of a blacktop road is, it's just the best bang for our buck. There's a wide road there already and there's a very dense housing population there as well. We'd be protecting the most homes for the least amount of money."

The actual work would take some time to get approved.

"This is a long grant cycle," Weishaar said. "Generally, when we get grant money coming in from the state, we have four years to spend it. Our four year time line probably started right around the end of the Cottonwood Complex. By the time we actually do our application, we're probably down somewhere around three years and then they also have to come in and do a cost-benefit analysis and an air study as well to make sure that we can do everything we want to do. There's going to be a long process moving forward. I'm going to say, we probably won't complete any major work until somewhere around 2024."

Weishaar also said they would need to get buy in from each of the landowners wherever they choose to work so that they could go on their property to do the mitigation. The estimate of the amount that could be worked on is 1,375 acres.

Weishaar: Fire mitigation funding is available, now time to make choices

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It was a little hot but it didn’t keep people from coming out to Don Michael Field to support the Trey Jones family Saturday evening. The field night was sponsored by DECA students at Hutchinson High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The donations will be used to help the Jones family, who were recently involved in an accident resulting in the death of coach Trey Jones and the severe injuries of his wife, Amy and daughter, Ava.

Field Night For the Jones Family was a reimagining of a similar event that DECA students hosted in 2021 for the Evans family after HHS coach, Clayton Evans, was injured. The Field Night event held in 2021 was such a&nbsp; success that DECA students wanted to continue to hold the event annually.&nbsp; Local businesses also partnered with the Field Night planning team to make the event possible.

Ava and Amy Jones continue to rehab in Louisville with hopes that they will be able to come home in a few weeks.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced that starting today, northbound Severance is closed at Sherman for repairs to a failed road base. Weather permitting, the road will be open again by Tuesday.

The detour goes west on Sherman to Pershing then north to 1st Avenue the back east to Severance. South bound Severance will remain open during the construction.

Northbound Severance is closed for street repairs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hospice and Homecare of Reno County drew the first five finalists for its Festival of Remembrance Car Raffle on Monday morning on the KWBW Morning Show. This is the 11th year for the car raffle.

"Lisa Hambleton and I both have had to use Hospice for our parents," said Phil Nightingale with Mel Hambleton Ford. "That's got meaning to us to give back and try to keep this car thing going. It was a little hard this year to get a car picked with our inventory levels and stuff, but we got one, so it's good. It's part of giving back to Reno County. I used to live here in Hutch. I don't anymore, working in Wichita, but we still have a lot of great employees that live in Reno County and a lot of great customers and still want to give back to this great community."

The car is a 2019 Ford Fusion and it's just a part of the 2022 Festival of Remembrance event. Tim Heisler, Barbara Yannaccone, Walter MacArthur, Nicole Gust and Sarah Rodriguez are the pre-sale finalists. Five more finalists will be drawn at the event. There's also a silent auction this week.

"The silent auction will actually go live today at 6 p.m.," said Sarah Diamond with Hospice and Homecare of Reno County. "We have furniture, we have golf packages, we have trips on our auctions. Also, we have a live auction that will be happening at the event. Haven, Kan.— The Haven City Council will take time to discuss the use of golf carts on city streets when they meet this evening.&nbsp;

The matter was brought up by a member of the council who would like to see the use of golf carts if they are street capable between sunrise and sunset. Several area communities do allow golf carts on streets.&nbsp;

Also this evening, the council will seek action on a proposal to increase the expenditure limit to $1,500 and the credit card limit from $3,000 to $4,000. And discuss enclosure and safety devices for a pond located at 22 N. Stadium.

Finally, the council will wrap up their meeting with the usual reports and comments from the council. Tonight’s meeting of the Haven City Council begins at 7 p.m. at the city office at 120 S. Kansas Avenue.

Kan. — Aug. 15 has been proclaimed to be Hutchinson Day. 

To celebrate, the public is invited to City Hall for a ceremony where the time capsule buried at City Hall in 1972 will be opened. The event will begin at 10 a.m. outside City Hall for the unearthing of the centennial time capsule and the placement of the sesquicentennial time capsule. Following that, guests will be invited to see the opening of the centennial time capsule.

The centennial time capsule, buried outside City Hall since the building was first completed in 1972, will then be unpacked by Reno County Museum staff in the council chambers. Those who wish to watch are welcome to sit in the gallery or watch the live stream online.

The contents of the centennial time capsule will then be moved to the Reno County Museum, where they will be cataloged and prepared for display. Recipients of letters from the 1972 time capsule will be contacted by the museum.

On that agenda are appointments to the Landmarks Commission, a Resolution approving the SW Bricktown Fiesta next month, an ordinance adopting the Standard Traffic Ordinance and Uniform Public Offense Code, two final plat requests for the Soli Deo Gloria Estates at 3510 North Lorraine and the Tajchman Addition (925 East 30th Street), and an update on the SAFE Sidewalk Program. There will also be two executive sessions, one for the council's portion of discussions on an employee contract with one of its bargaining units and another with the attorney-client privilege exception to discuss transient guest tax.

The Hutchinson City Council meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall at 125 East Avenue B.

Light agenda for City Council Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College Cosmetology is hosting its annual Back to School Haircut Day today, August 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the school’s center at 200 E. 3rd Ave., Hutchinson.

Children in Pre-K through grade 12 are eligible for a free haircut to be performed by HutchCC cosmetology students and volunteer cosmetologists and barbers. No appointment is necessary; haircuts will be done on a first come, first served basis.

How To Prepare For an Emergency Transition will be presented on by&nbsp;Eric Steinle from Martindell Swearer Shaffer Ridenour LLP, Frank Choriego from the Small Business Development Corporation and&nbsp;Justin Mitchell from Adams Brown Strategic Allies and CPAs.

Topics to be covered include, legal preparation, creating an emergency transition action plan, how to prepare your team in case of an emergency and who to include on your transition team.

The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Chamber at 117 North Walnut.

The cost is $20 per person, if you are a Chamber member or $25 per person for non-members. Lunch is included. Call to see if there are any spots left at 620-662-3391.

Welcome to Hutch Post’s new feature series "A Day in the Life." We've gone behind the scenes to see what "a day in the life" is like for some of Reno County's busiest shops, factories and businesses. We'll show the inner workings of facilities you may pass every day, to finally see what goes on inside. From boilers to donuts, join us as we learn how things are designed and produced right here in Reno County with "A Day in the Life." This series will be posted every other Sunday morning.

This is a special edition of A Day in the Life. With the start of the school year and recent events involving shootings at schools, we thought this would be a chance for you to see, and know, that local law enforcement is working to help protect students if such an event occurred. While it is unfortunate that such training is necessary, we wanted you to see what is being done in Hutchinson and Reno County to keep schools safe. This edition does contain video of law enforcement using live rounds with soft bullets to simulate real-life situations. Please note this is a real simulation and the video does contain simulated victims and real-life situations, some of which are graphic. Parts of the exercise are being left out intentionally to avoid disclosing tactical information that keeps officers safe.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Area law enforcement, Reno County EMS and&nbsp; Hutchinson Fire take time each year to conduct active shooter training in area schools. The exercise, done each year at various locations, helps officers prepare for such an event by putting them through various scenarios. The Hutchinson Fire Department was brought in to help train them on responding to numerous injuries and to triage such events.

The training starts out with a briefing for all personnel. At that briefing, all parties talk about how to respond to an active shooter, what the appropriate techniques are going to be, how to set up a triage area for injuries, and how victims can be rescued and removed from the building. The goal is to have a full picture of what will take pace if such a situation arises.&nbsp;

After that briefing, the individual units go into a breakout session to discuss their specific component of the exercise. For law enforcement, that includes single and team movement drills. Changes in how law enforcement reacts to active shooter situations has led law enforcement to evolve into a single-man response to an active shooter. That change came about from the shooting at Excel Industries in Hesston.

Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper says law enforcement used to wait and call in a SWAT team or form a multi-officer pattern before entering a building. Now, any officer, even if it’s just one, will enter the building and, if possible, diffuse the situation. It's a change brought on by the need to stop the shooter as quickly as possible. Simulated ammunition is used in the training.

As law enforcement works to secure areas of the building, the fire department works on extraction of victims. Law enforcement will walk around such injuries in an effort to get to the shooter as quickly as possible, but still make sure the fire department can extract a victim safely. It is a delicate balance of moving quickly, but ensuring that everyone is secured.

The action taken by law enforcement can change moment-to-moment if actual gunfire is taking place or begins. Once shooting starts, officers know there is a particular threat in that area and will move as quickly as possible.&nbsp;

The exercise also goes over how to deal with what are, understandably, upset parents or guardians of students. Chief Hooper wanted to stress that he can surely understand how parents would react to such a situation. He stresses that parents or guardians should not try to rescue their children. With the high-charged situation going on, it is likely that a parent in the building could be mistaken for a suspect and not a victim. The practice is for parents or guardians to gather at a designated rally point so they and their children can be accounted.&nbsp;

While this exercise was all about the schools, law enforcement will also provide such training and situational awareness to any business, church or manufacturer that wants it. Hooper wanted to stress that they are doing everything they can to keep schools safe from any type of threat.
