HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The trial for a Wichita man who is charged with abducting a woman in Wichita and then trying to kill her at Cheney State Park and wounding a child will be delayed until next year.

According to a court filing signed by Judge Trish Rose on Tuesday, defense counsel asked for additional time because counsel's father was hospitalized and is COVID-positive. The trial was supposed to start Dec. 6.

Kamden Campos trial date has not yet been rescheduled, though the continuance request is for 90 days. 

Campos is facing 12 counts including six counts of attempted first degree murder one count of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of criminal threat.

The six counts of attempted murder and the single kidnapping count carry sentences of up to 55 years in prison if Campos is convicted.

Campos was arrested after allegedly abducting a woman and her family in Wichita. They drove out to Cheney Lake. When the woman tried to escape in a vehicle, Campos allegedly shot at the vehicle hitting a 2-year-old girl.

The woman drove into Sedgwick County where she called 911. The child survived.

Campos trial continued into 2023

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council is having a special meeting Thursday to discuss details before making an offer to a new City Manager candidate.

"We're already planning a joint meeting with the Hutchinson Recreation Commission," Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho said last week. "I do hope to have an executive session immediately following that to hammer out any additional details of a contract, so that we can put that together and have that on the agenda for the following week."

Details about the contract will not be available until the official offer is made and the item is on the Dec. 6 agenda, but the special meeting with the executive session is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Thursday.&nbsp;

City Manager contract to be finalized Thursday

RENO COUNTY — The&nbsp;<a href="file:///C:/Users/b940h571/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/Content.Outlook/WDB8NGC8/kletc.org" target="_blank">Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center</a>&nbsp;(KLETC) serves as the facilitator of the new voluntary&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kletc.org/kleap" target="_blank">Kansas Law Enforcement Accreditation Program</a>&nbsp;(KLEAP) to be launched statewide on&nbsp;December 1.

Since 1968, KLETC has served as the headquarters for all law enforcement training in Kansas and is a unit of the&nbsp;<a href="https://ku.edu/" target="_blank">University of Kansas</a>&nbsp;(KU). This unique association with KU, a major research institution, allows KLETC to leverage the strength and resources of an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aau.edu/" target="_blank">AAU</a>&nbsp;research university to better educate and train students. KLETC’s statutory mission is “the promotion and development of improved law enforcement personnel and procedures throughout the state.

In 2021, KLETC applied for and was awarded a grant through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) with the goal of establishing a voluntary state level accreditation program for law enforcement agencies in Kansas. At the time of application, Kansas was one of only 14 states that did not have a state-level law enforcement accreditation program.

In February 2022, nine members were appointed to the Kansas Accreditation Council (KAC), the guiding body for KLEAP. KAC members were appointed by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksacp.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police</a>&nbsp;(KACP) and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansassheriffs.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Sheriffs’ Association</a>&nbsp;(KSA), and represent a geographically diverse range of agencies of all sizes.&nbsp;

KLETC Executive Director Darin Beck appointed one additional council member from a law enforcement agency not led by a sheriff or municipal chief of police, as a member-at-large. Two remaining council members are permanent appointments from KLETC staff, are nonvoting members, and are not eligible to hold the seats of Chair or Vice Chair. &nbsp;

Accreditation strengthens the professionalism of law enforcement and encourages transparency with the communities they serve. It is also a time-proven means for helping agencies evaluate and improve their overall performance. 

KLEAP is designed to be meaningful, obtainable, and affordable for any Kansas law enforcement agency. The KLEAP standards, the fee schedule, and a multitude of resources for Kansas agencies is available on the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kletc.org/kleap" target="_blank">KLEAP website</a>. Additionally, FREE on-going training is provided to any Kansas agency desiring to participate.

Twelve (12) agencies have enrolled in KLEAP participating as beta test agencies or early starters. KLEAP’s goal is to increase the number of Kansas law enforcement agencies that elect to participate in a voluntary accreditation program. 

The KLEAP vision is “to be a compass on the journey towards law enforcement excellence in Kansas.” Accreditation offers many benefits, such as lower insurance rates and reduced liability and susceptibility to lawsuits. It sends a message to communities that their law enforcement agency is committed to excellence.

ARCA administers provisions of the Kansas-Colorado Arkansas River Compact, including operations of the John Martin Reservoir. Arkansas River Compact Administration to meet Dec. 8

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.interfaithks.org/" target="_blank">Interfaith Housing and Community Services</a>, a Hutchinson-based 501(c)(3), is addressing youth mentorship and housing with its transitional youth house. &nbsp;

The former LightHouse property, located at 1005 N. Washington St., is being renovated into eight individual apartments. &nbsp;

It will provide transitional housing for homeless or struggling youth, ages 18 to 25, in need of a safe and affordable place to live. &nbsp;

“How this came to light is that we had a conversation with some high schools here in town. And they were saying how there were a lot of youth that were couch-surfing, that type of thing,” Lacy Stauffacher, Interfaith Director of Creating Assets Savings and Hope, said. “Over a hundred in our community.”&nbsp;

 The transitional youth house, set to open in the spring, has seen a few setbacks. &nbsp;

“It will not be completed until April,” Stauffacher said. “We’ve had delays because of the electrical, everything’s going to be ran on its own electrical, and the electrical boxes are severely delayed. They were supposed to be here a year ago in November, and we’re still waiting.”&nbsp;

 Stauffacher said Interfaith will start processing applications in 2023. &nbsp;

“Once the young adults apply, the whole premise of the project is to just wrap the individual with resources,” Stauffacher said. “Resources that they can get on their feet. They can start paying that market value rent.”&nbsp;

“And we have other partners who are going to teach cooking skills, cleaning skills, and just maintaining a house.” &nbsp;

Other resources will include helping with college or providing a full-time job. &nbsp;

Additionally, a new non-profit, Safe Harbor, will&nbsp;provide case management and support services for the youth. &nbsp;

“The bottom line, the absolute thing is that we want eight young adults provided with safe, affordable housing,” Stauffacher said. &nbsp;

The property will be for single people only as a way to encourage the young adults living there to focus on learning the life skills being mentored to them. &nbsp;

Life skills like shopping on a budget, organizing small spaces, and laundry.&nbsp;

The project has already been met with community support.&nbsp;

“There's a church nearby that has said they would like to provide a meal once a Wednesday a month,” Stauffacher said. “First Mennonite Church. They’re highly involved.” &nbsp;

Sunflower Yoga in Hutchinson will be donating bathroom supplies in support of the house. &nbsp;

“Anything they need, toiletries, towels, washcloths, anything that you would need for a bathroom,” Brian Martin, owner of Sunflower Yoga, said.&nbsp;

Sunflower Yoga will take bathroom donations for Interfaith until the beginning of the new year. &nbsp;

 “This is a mission for us,” Stauffacher said. “Safe, affordable housing for all, is part of our mission. We were in a couple community meetings, we did see a need, where there are these young adults that are in transition to find secured housing. That could be an individual aging out of the foster care system, that could be a kid in their last semester in high school.”

 “On top of that, the funding piece of it was to create a program that wraps these individuals with resources for substance abuse education.”  &nbsp;

The program will also provide resumé help, access to healthcare, and a mentor. &nbsp;

Providing a mentor will encourage a positive adult relationship where many young adults may have been missing that influence in their lives.&nbsp;

“It's just a positive role model in their life where they can rely on them just to talk to,” Stauffacher said. &nbsp;

Stauffacher said that, although the program is in the infancy stage and they still have a few technical things to figure out, Interfaith has a clear goal. &nbsp;

“Is it income-based rent? Is it no rent for a little bit until they can get on their feet? With the goal of once they’re either a year or two years in the LightHouse where they can sustain a market value rented-place or purchase a home,” Stauffacher said.&nbsp;

Providing safe and affordable housing has been <a href="https://www.interfaithks.org/ourmission" target="_blank">Interfaith’s mission since its founding in 1989</a>.&nbsp;

Interfaith, as a non-profit, runs on donations, volunteers and grant funding. &nbsp;

The transitional youth housing project has received donations and community tax credits for funding. &nbsp;

Interfaith needs $150,000 to completely fund every facet of the project, according to Stauffacher.&nbsp;

“We do work a lot on volunteer work,” Stauffacher said. “In January and February, the <a href="https://christianaidministries.org/program/conservative-anabaptist-service-program/" target="_blank">CASP</a> group will be there to finish up the project.” &nbsp;

The fine lines of the overall project are still getting worked out and more details will come from Interfaith as the end of the year nears, as well as April 2023. &nbsp;

 </figure>By JUDD WEIL&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.interfaithks.org/" target="_blank">Interfaith Housing and Community Services</a>, a Hutchinson-based 501(c)(3), is addressing youth mentorship and housing with its transitional youth house. &nbsp;The former LightHouse property, located at 1005 N. Washington St., is being renovated into eight individual apartments. &nbsp;It will provide transitional housing for homeless or struggling youth, ages 18 to 25, in need of a safe and affordable place to live. &nbsp;“How this came to light is that we had a conversation with some high schools here in town. And they were saying how there were a lot of youth that were couch-surfing, that type of thing,” Lacy Stauffacher, Interfaith Director of Creating Assets Savings and Hope, said. “Over a hundred in our community.”&nbsp; The transitional youth house, set to open in the spring, has seen a few setbacks. &nbsp;“It will not be completed until April,” Stauffacher said. “We’ve had delays because of the electrical, everything’s going to be ran on its own electrical, and the electrical boxes are severely delayed. They were supposed to be here a year ago in November, and we’re still waiting.”&nbsp; Stauffacher said Interfaith will start processing applications in 2023. &nbsp;“Once the young adults apply, the whole premise of the project is to just wrap the individual with resources,” Stauffacher said. “Resources that they can get on their feet. They can start paying that market value rent.”&nbsp;“And we have other partners who are going to teach cooking skills, cleaning skills, and just maintaining a house.” &nbsp;Other resources will include helping with college or providing a full-time job. &nbsp;Additionally, a new non-profit, Safe Harbor, will&nbsp;provide case management and support services for the youth. &nbsp;“The bottom line, the absolute thing is that we want eight young adults provided with safe, affordable housing,” Stauffacher said. &nbsp;The property will be for single people only as a way to encourage the young adults living there to focus on learning the life skills being mentored to them. &nbsp;Life skills like shopping on a budget, organizing small spaces, and laundry.&nbsp;The project has already been met with community support.&nbsp;“There's a church nearby that has said they would like to provide a meal once a Wednesday a month,” Stauffacher said. “First Mennonite Church. They’re highly involved.” &nbsp;Sunflower Yoga in Hutchinson will be donating bathroom supplies in support of the house. &nbsp;“Anything they need, toiletries, towels, washcloths, anything that you would need for a bathroom,” Brian Martin, owner of Sunflower Yoga, said.&nbsp;Sunflower Yoga will take bathroom donations for Interfaith until the beginning of the new year. &nbsp; “This is a mission for us,” Stauffacher said. “Safe, affordable housing for all, is part of our mission. We were in a couple community meetings, we did see a need, where there are these young adults that are in transition to find secured housing. That could be an individual aging out of the foster care system, that could be a kid in their last semester in high school.” “On top of that, the funding piece of it was to create a program that wraps these individuals with resources for substance abuse education.” &nbsp;The program will also provide resumé help, access to healthcare, and a mentor. &nbsp;Providing a mentor will encourage a positive adult relationship where many young adults may have been missing that influence in their lives.&nbsp;“It's just a positive role model in their life where they can rely on them just to talk to,” Stauffacher said. &nbsp;Stauffacher said that, although the program is in the infancy stage and they still have a few technical things to figure out, Interfaith has a clear goal. &nbsp;“Is it income-based rent? Is it no rent for a little bit until they can get on their feet? Interfaith renovating house for young adult services

NEWTON, Kan. — KDOT plans to close two I-135 ramps in Newton on Thursday, Dec. 1 for a pavement-marking project. 

The northbound ramp at First Street and the southbound ramp at Broadway will be closed from around 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Cars headed south will not be able to exit I-135 at Broadway and northbound cars will not be able to exit at First Street from I-135 during that period.

Two I-135 ramps to be closed Thursday in Newton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department released the statistics Tuesday from its saturation patrol over the Thanksgiving enforcement period.&nbsp;

Over the period of November 21st and November 22nd, Hutchinson officers wrote 5 adult/ teen safety belt citations, 5 driver license violations, 5 insurance violations along with approximately 22 other citations and made 3 arrests for misdemeanor warrants. 64 counterfeit Oxycodone tablets containing fentanyl along with other drug and drug paraphernalia were located and seized during a traffic stop resulting in a felony arrest. All told, officers made 29 enforcement stops during the campaign.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Thanksgiving Safe Arrival traffic enforcement campaign was supported by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Thanksgiving enforcement stats told

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that will nominate a former Jackson County, Missouri, prosecuting attorney to be the next U.S. Attorney for Kansas.

Kate Brubacher, a native of North Newton, Kansas, worked in the Jackson County prosecutor's office from from 2016 to August 2022, where she prosecuted homicide cases, helped with a federally-funded restorative justice program and worked on efforts to reduce gun violence.

During her tenure, Brubacher was part of a team that successfully fought for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-kansas-missouri-bba67efd61eaa165165e29a7298a1dc3">release of Kevin Strickland</a>, a Kansas City man who served more than 40 years in prison for a triple murder he did not commit.

If the U.S. Senate confirms her nomination, Brubacher would replace Duston Slinkard, who has been acting U.S. attorney for Kansas since Biden was inaugurated in January 2021.

Brubacher is a 2010 graduate of Yale Law School. She also graduated from Yale Divinity School and Stanford University. Before working in Jackson County, she was an associate at the law firm Cooley LLP in New York.

North Newton native nominated to be U.S. Attorney in Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Administrator Randy Partington reminded the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday that there is a planned joint meeting for them with the Hutchinson City Council next week.

"It will be December 6 following their City Council meeting," said Partington. "I'm not sure exactly what time their meetings end, probably mid to late morning. I'm going to work with Gary, the interim manager, to set up an agenda. I had on the original list, I think, in talking with one of the commissioners, the water infrastructure and possibly sewer infrastructure requests and partnerships that the city and county may want to partake in."

Commission chair Daniel Friesen wants to talk about economic development, too. He cited the recent groundbreaking at the city's industrial park as one area where they have worked together.

"I was able to attend that with the Mayor and the Chamber," Friesen said. "It was very cold. I think an agenda item on, hey, we are working together, how do we do more of that, related to economic development, I think would be great. It seems like the winds have changed a little bit at the city."

Partington did not say where that meeting would take place.

City and County to hold joint meeting next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners approved the appointment of Karen Hammersmith as the County's permanent health officer at its meeting on Tuesday, but not until they had an executive session for non-elected personnel to allow chair Daniel Friesen to express his opinion to the other commissioners privately prior to the vote.

"I feel like this should be a conversation with the new commission," Friesen said. "I don't think we should be making items of such permanency during, kind of, our lame duck session. Some of the other stuff I think, you know, we discuss in executive session and it has to stay there. I appreciate the opportunity to have a conversation on it."

The Board also approved the permanent appointment as the County's medical consultant in cases of emergency of Dr. Scott Pauly. There was a bit of friction on the issue, as again Friesen questioned the timing, along with wanting to see a formal contract. Ron Sellers made a motion to make the appointment, contingent on getting specific information to the commission and receiving acceptance from Dr. Pauly.

"We've put this thing off for three or four months," Sellers said. "Some of us have been asking for this to be on the agenda and it finally got on, after an extended period of time."

Friesen reiterated that he felt that decision should be left until after the three new commissioners are seated. Both motions passed 2-1 with Commissioners Sellers and Hirst in favor and Friesen against. Since the Board of County Commissioners also acts as the County Board of Health, it is possible for the new board, once seated, to revisit the issue.

Permanent County Health Officer and Medical Consultant approved Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jackson Swearer with StartUp Hutch told the Board of County Commissioners Tuesday about the results of last week's Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge. There were participants from Haven, Pretty Prairie and Buhler this year.

"We invite all students in the grades of 9-12 to participate," Swearer said. "We tend to see the most participation for students in business classes that make it part of their curriculum. We have three great instructors at those schools that do that."

The winners for this year are from Haven.

"The winning team is Double Estate from Haven High School," Swearer said. "Brylie Warden and Hadley Idacavage and their teacher, Jessica Wilson, as well. They did a really great job with a presentation about a business for a secondhand shopping website and they will be representing Reno County at the statewide entrepreneurship challenge at K-State later in April."

Hutchinson High School&nbsp;seniors, Dalton Estes and Riley Lusk were the county and statewide winners last school year.

Haven students win Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Taste of Hutchinson: The Men Cook event to benefit Salthawk Community Support is back in January after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic.

"We're coming back and have a lot of enthusiasm," said Claire Foy who is on the committee for the fundraiser. "The cooks signing up, we had a meeting a couple of weeks ago. There was a lot of enthusiasm and bantering back and forth about what they are going to fix. Of course, there's competition, because there's always competition. I think people will have a wonderful time. I know, when they first started in 2019, people came and thought, okay, we'll come in, we'll support this cause and then we'll go out and eat dinner. An hour and a half later, they had eaten all that they could hold. There was no need to go out and eat dinner, because, even though it's only a sample and a bite, it does fill up and I don't think anybody went away hungry and certainly didn't need to go out and eat dinner."

There will be 22 individuals or teams providing food for the event on January 21, 2023. One ongoing activity between now and the fundraiser is the Christmastime Santa Sacks given out by&nbsp;Salthawk Community Support.

"The sacks are being filled," Foy said. "We would like very much for the community to be able to help us raise money for these. We, at this point, hope to be able to provide 150 Santa Sacks for Hutchinson High School, a hundred sacks for Midtown at the Avenue A academy and 30 sacks at HMS-8."

The goal for the Santa Sacks project is $22,000. Salthawk Community Support event coming up in January, need money for Santa Sacks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tiffany Davison with the American Red Cross said during the season when illness is more likely, the need for additional blood donors is even greater.

"Right now, we're starting to see that seasonal flu," Davison said. "Obviously, there is some RSV around and we are seeing a little bit of a drop in donors able to donate. During the holidays, that fun can often push blood donation to the bottom of your to do list as well, so between the sickness and just a busy time of year, it is often hard for us."

"A donor of whole blood can donate every 56 days," Davison said. "Those who donate power reds can donate every 112 days. Sometimes they can get off schedule during this time of the year. We do have several opportunities coming up throughout December here in the Reno County area for donors to donate."

There is also a blood drive continuing Tuesday and Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church this week. If you give blood, you can follow your unit to where it is used on the <a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/blood-donor-app.html">Red Cross Blood Donor App</a>.

"You can also make your appointment that way," Davison said. "You can also have your blood type right there. It also holds your donor card, so it's easy to check in at registration. You can have it scanned right there. You can also do your Rapid Pass through that blood donor app. The Rapid Pass is something that we recommend donors do day of drive and it can save them about 10 or 15 minutes at the blood drive at health history. It's kind of that pre-reading information that it saves them time doing."

During the holidays, that fun can often push blood donation to the bottom of your to do list as well, so between the sickness and just a busy time of year, it is often hard for us."You can give blood several times a year."A donor of whole blood can donate every 56 days," Davison said. "Those who donate power reds can donate every 112 days. Sometimes they can get off schedule during this time of the year. We do have several opportunities coming up throughout December here in the Reno County area for donors to donate."There is also a blood drive continuing Tuesday and Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church this week. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education heard a presentation on the district’s Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment department at their meeting on Monday.

USD 308 recently gained full accreditation from the Kansas State Department of Education after being visited by an Outside Visitation Team. 

Key areas that the district focused on during this past accreditation cycle were social-emotional growth, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study, high school graduation rate, and postsecondary success.

Also during Monday’s meeting, the Board heard updates from Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson, including planning goals for the next school year and retirement trends and recruitment.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting is Monday, December 12, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. at the USD 308 Administrative Center, 1520 N Plum.

Hutchinson Salvation Army to get match of special Giving Tuesday donations

Newton, Kan. — The City of Newton announced on Nov. 28 that residents will a have a new tool at their disposal to better their community.

The City of Newton has contracted FlashVote, an independent, scientific survey service provider, to engage the community and gather valuable resident feedback on city government matters.

In the next year, FlashVote will create a series of one-minute surveys about timely city issues that residents may choose to receive by email, phone call or text message. 

These surveys will cover a range of topics, such as the budget, utilities, city projects and more.

Newton residents can sign up by visiting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.flashvote.com/newtonks">flashvote.com/NewtonKS</a>&nbsp;or calling (775) 235-2240.

Sign-up takes less than one minute and survey data is anonymous. 

Personal or demographic information collected by FlashVote is never shared with the city&nbsp;or anyone else. 

When residents sign up, they can determine how their surveys are received, whether by email, text or phone call.

After residents sign up, they will receive a notification whenever the city posts a new survey, and they will have 48 hours to participate before voting closes. 

Once a survey is closed, everyone who participated will automatically receive a summary of the overall results and be able to see how their responses compare to the rest of the community.

City commissioners and staff will use the survey results to help shape city policy, projects and decisions in the coming year.&nbsp;

City of Newton launches new resident survey tool

Hutchinson, Kan. – The Hutchinson Recreation Commission (Hutch Rec) in Hutchinson, announced on Nov. 28, Director of Sports, Randy Carter, will be retiring on Dec. 31. &nbsp;

Carter began his career with Hutch Rec in November 2007 as the agency’s Sports Coordinator. &nbsp;

Carter&nbsp;moved into the Director of Sports position in January 2016. &nbsp;

During his tenure of 15 years, Carter has overseen the agency’s youth and adult sports divisions, as well as the programs and activities at Fun Valley Sports Complex, Hobart-Detter Field, and the Hutchinson Sports Arena north entrance. &nbsp;

He also spent time in the Recreation Division, assisting with the Stay to Play summer day camp and other recreation programs. &nbsp;

A public come-and-go reception for Carter will take place on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hutch Rec Downtown, 17 E. 1st Ave.&nbsp;

Hutch Rec Director of Sports retiring end of year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Hutchinson Public Schools has received full accreditation from the Kansas Department of Education based on their work in the areas of social-emotional&nbsp;growth, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study, graduation rate, and postsecondary success.

On September 30, 2022, USD 308 hosted an Outside Visitation Team (OVT), which consisted of educators from El Dorado, who assessed the district’s goals and progress over the last accreditation period. The Kansas State Board of Education accredits school districts every five years. Districts focus on key areas of improvement over that period of time.&nbsp;

The key areas that USD 308 has focused on over its last accreditation period were: social-emotional growth, kindergarten readiness, individual plans of study, graduation rate, and postsecondary success.&nbsp; During the visit, USD 308 leaders gave the OVT the opportunity to experience these areas first-hand by visiting schools, as well as meeting students and staff.&nbsp;

Following the visit, the OVT produced a report indicating that USD 308 had been fully accredited. In the area of kindergarten readiness, the report stated, “Using data collection from ASQ, Fast Bridge, and Early Read Map, a curriculum was established that includes preschool and kindergarten. The district has expanded their preschool and daycare programs in providing transitional alignment between preschool and kindergarten.”

Another area the district excelled in was individual plans of study. The report stated, “The Individual Plan of Study was a major focus in developing a Plan of Study for student engagement. By the end of the KESA cycle, one hundred percent of students in grades K-12 have explored career pathways.”

“We are proud of everyone who put in time and effort to earn this accomplishment. I want to thank the Outside Visitation Team from El Dorado for taking the time to visit our district and critically evaluate our efforts toward quality school improvement. As we close out the current 5-year cycle, we are already looking to the future and creating goals that will ensure USD 308 remains a district focused on leadership, innovation, and purpose-driven results in Reno County,” said USD 308 superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson.

Author of race conversation book for teachers at ESSDACK next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Veterans who may have been denied service-connected benefits before need to apply again after the passage of the&nbsp;Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxins Act of 2022, also known as the PACT Act back in August.

"The PACT Act is really probably the largest health care and benefit expansion in VA history," said&nbsp;VBA Regional Office Director Donna Meyer-Hickel. "It expands VA health care and benefits for Veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances."

Because of the expansion of benefit dates and exposure opportunities that are now considered qualifying for VA assistance, any Veterans from Vietnam forward should consider reapplication.

"Because this is going to be such a massive expansion, we're going to have to phase in hospital care, medical services and other care gradually, over time for three different categories of Veterans," said spokesperson Jeff Herndon. "Category one is Veterans who participated in a toxic exposure risk activity while serving on active duty, during training, or even inactive duty training. Category two is Veterans who were assigned to a duty station in certain locations during specific periods of time. There's a lot of information, a lot of locations, a lot of dates. That is on or after August 2, 1990, running up through September 11, 2001. Category three is going to be Veterans who deployed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Freedom Sentinel, Iraqi Freedom and a few others, as well. It's critical that Veterans visit <a href="https://www.va.gov/resources/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits/">VA.gov/PACT</a> and apply for health care as quickly as possible."

If you're not internet savvy, you can still take your DD-214 and this past year's tax return to any <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/255ab594-fa22-4473-8fd9-2674a0bee548">VA clinic</a> to sign up, or there is a special event coming up next month in Wichita.

"You do not have to pay anybody to file for your health care," Herndon said. "You do not have to pay anybody to file a disability claim. Come see us December 10, Saturday. Down at the medical center in Wichita, in our auditorium, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., we're going to have a one stop shop for Veterans to come in and handle PACT Act related issues. If you're already enrolled for VA health care, you'll have an opportunity to get your toxic exposure screening. We'll have some education classes going on to learn more about the PACT Act. We'll have plenty of people there to assist with disability claims and we'll be able to enroll you for health care, if you're not enrolled already."

The passage of the PACT Act helps VA improve research, staff education, and treatment related to toxic exposures.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;BrightHouse, in partnership with Eagle Media and Dillons Marketplace will Stuff the Bus on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This annual food and fundraiser fills the pantry for the winter at the BrightHouse Safe Shelter House.

"We gather food and gift cards and money and cleaning supplies, to feed people in our shelter," said Sue Wray with BrightHouse. "This year our shelter has been twice as busy as it was the year before. We've had more than twice the people in shelters."

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;BrightHouse, in partnership with Eagle Media and Dillons Marketplace will Stuff the Bus on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This annual food and fundraiser fills the pantry for the winter at the BrightHouse Safe Shelter House."We gather food and gift cards and money and cleaning supplies, to feed people in our shelter," said Sue Wray with BrightHouse. "This year our shelter has been twice as busy as it was the year before. We've had more than twice the people in shelters."You can make a difference for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault by donating commonly used items throughout that day at Dillons. BrightHouse volunteers will be standing by with carts to fill and pile into a bus supplied by Durham Bus company. Non-perishable food items and household items are requested, and Dillons Gift Cards are greatly appreciated, too!"What we need is non-perishable food items," Wray said. "We've got a list. It's canned vegetables and meats, boxed dinner helpers, granola bars, breakfast bars and cereal, snacks and crackers and rice, potato and pasta side dishes. Also, a lot of facial tissues, paper towels, toilet paper all that kind of things and then, cleaning supplies. We keep the shelter supplied with that kind of stuff pretty well through a lot of the year. It really makes a big difference. People are very generous."Wray isn't exactly sure why, but there are a lot of pressures on relationships these days."Domestic abuse never starts with money," Wray said. "It always starts with deeper problems there. I think there are a lot of things. I think inflation and those pressures have contributed to the pressures that create those kinds of abuse issues. We didn't realize it, but I think people were a little hesitant to go to a shelter during COVID, you know, when it was really a problem. We maybe didn't realize it at the time. Also, what is causing our shelter to be more full. People are staying longer, because the rents are so high. It's harder for us to get people into new housing. We've got landlords that work with us. They are wonderful, but, you know, as rents go up, that just means women who are in our shelter, who are looking for a new place to live, it costs more, so it's taking them longer."Where a typical stay used to be days or weeks, now it's taking about three months to get a permanent place for families to stay.The 24-7 crisis line is (620) 663-2522.
