NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;KDOT plans to close two I-135 ramps in Newton this week for a pavement-marking project. 

The northbound ramp at Exit 33, to eastbound U.S. 50 will close on Tuesday, Dec. 27; the southbound ramp at Exit 30, to westbound U.S. 50 will close on Wednesday, Dec. 28. 

Each closure will be from around 9 a.m. to around 3 p.m.

More pavement marking in Newton this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; The Reno County Board of County Commissioners will not meet on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, so the next meeting will be the organizational meeting of the newly elected five member Board of County Commissioners.

There will be three new commissioners on the board at its organizational meeting Jan. 9, the ones from the newly created districts, Mark Reese and Don Bogner, and Ron Sellers replacement in District 1, Randy Parks. Daniel Friesen and Ron Hirst remain on the commission and are in the middle of their terms.

All five commissioners set to serve in 2023 are Republicans.

Their next meeting will be on Monday, January 9, 2023 in the Reno County Annex Conference Room.

City provides drop offs for real Christmas trees

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie&nbsp;County farmer and rancher We are on the verge of welcoming a new year in. I don’t know about you, but I will not be sad to see 2022 in the rearview mirror. Any way you cut it, this year was tough whether it was the economy or the weather. In many ways 2023 can only get better. Our sense of optimism is one of the best qualities of agriculture. Each year is a blank slate, a new beginning with endless possibilities. It doesn’t matter how bad the last year might have been, this next one is our year. It is because we are in the business of nurturing new life each year. If we plant crops, we put seed in the ground with the hope rains will come, the sun will shine and the new growth will break through the soil. We count on two things that we cannot control, rain and sunshine. Yet each year we place a small seed in the soil and hope it will sprout, grow and produce grain. If that does not take faith, hope and optimism, I don’t know what does. If we raise livestock of any species, most of us are responsible for bringing new life into this world. Very little creates more wonder for me than to watch a newborn lamb or calf come into this world. I don’t care how many times I witness the miracle of life; it will never get old. The planning and preparation for that moment was months or even years in the making. All the work, all the waiting is worth it in those first few moments. A sense of optimism and hope abounds with all livestock producers this time of the year. Hope and optimism are inherent to farming and ranching, it is the one thing we all have to have. We approach each year knowing we need to feed a hungry world and to do that we need to have help. There is so much of agriculture that we cannot control, and that makes faith in the future so important. We plan and work hard to do all we can, but in the end our livelihood comes down to what Mother Nature decides to do. To keep going each year requires a resolve few others understand. That optimism for the future is what keeps each of us going through the bad years and disappointments. It is what makes us so special and why we are the backbone of society. No matter the situation, no matter how bad things might get, we move forward with eternal hope and the knowledge things will get better. I hope that this year will send rains at the right time and sunshine when we need it. I hope the crops are bin busters and your livestock are sleek and fat. Most of all I hope the upcoming year is a good one. May 2023 bring the best for you with hope that 2024 is even better. &nbsp;

Insight: Here's to the New Year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2023 Kansas Economic Outlook Conference Season for the&nbsp;Center for Economic Development and Business Research at Wichita State University includes a stop in Hutchinson in February.

The center announced its winter schedule last week. The tour starts in Montgomery County on Jan. 30, then goes to Labette County Jan 31. and continues that day with the&nbsp;Southeast Kansas Regional Planning Commission.&nbsp;

The tour then goes to Wyandotte County and to Topeka Feb. 1, Lawrence Feb. 2 and Dickinson County Feb. 3 before coming to Hutchinson Feb. 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the&nbsp;Crystal Ballroom at The Burt.

WSU Economic expert coming to Hutch in Feb.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Shaley Shumate with the Hutchinson YMCA wants to be sure that those suffering from Parkinson's know that they can get help at the Y.

"Exercise has proven to be very beneficial for those suffering from Parkinson's," Shumate said. "We're meeting Monday, Wednesday, Friday every week, Monday and Friday at 11 a.m. and Wednesday at noon."

You do not have to be a Y member to attend the class.

"Member or non-member, you are more than welcome to come and participate," Shumate said. "We work on some strength. We work on mobility. We work on teaching them how to be safe and avoid injuries and that kind of thing, as well as the social aspect of getting to talk to their peers about their diagnosis, and kind of their journey."

Loss of function is a big danger if those with Parkinson's do not remain active and move big.

"Those are some of the things that we work on during class, as well as the vocalizations," Shumate said. "That's something that they have to continually work on or they will lose. We kind of work on that, as well."

The risk of developing Parkinson’s disease naturally increases with age, and the average age at which it starts is 60 years old.

Hutchinson Y hosting Parkinson's class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson is looking ahead to the future of the district and how they can be intentional, even as student numbers start to fall.&nbsp;USD 308 will be working with the Community Engagement Institute (CEI) at Wichita State University to facilitate the new strategic planning process.

"We want to contribute to the economic growth of our community," Johnson said. "We really want to be invested in student success. Keeping those kind of things in mind, we really need to think about, how do we shape ourselves in the next five years? How are we moving? I've talked about our enrollment dropping, probably just around Reno County with everyone. How do we shape and shift again and provide the best quality education that we can?"

It's also a challenge to find people who want to get into teaching, or stay in it.

"We are finding shortages for teachers," Johnson said. "We are just starting to get into the advertising business of those positions. They haven't been out there very long, but there's not a whole lot. When I started in this business a long time ago, if you had an elementary opening, you'd probably have a hundred applicants. Today, if we have an elementary opening, we'll be lucky if we have one."

Work on the future of facilities in the district will begin with a facility committee.&nbsp;If someone would like to be considered for this committee, contact the district office at (620) 615-4009 to provide your name and contact information.

"I'll be looking and reaching out to folks in the community," Johnson said. "If folks think they'd like to be on this committee, they should probably call me. We're looking for 30 to 45 people maybe, to be on this committee. That will go through about a 15-month timeline. By March of 2024, we hope to be able to say, here are some decisions that the board could pull off the shelf in the future, or pull off the shelf right then, or wherever they think that they might be in that process. If you, at 2035, think you're going to be down to 3500 students, maybe this is what that plan looks like."

With the long-term child care needs of the community, repurposing facilities is an idea that is on the table for the committee to discuss, among others, once members express interest.

Johnson: Strategic planning key for USD 308

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — A Hutchinson woman was injured in a traffic accident Christmas night in Reno County. 

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, 46-year-old Sandra Radke reported that she struck a pole off the east side of Haven Road about a quarter mile south of Long View after leaving the road to the right.

Radke had been northbound. She told officers the last thing she remembered was&nbsp;headlights being right in front of her.&nbsp;

Radke was transported for her injuries by EMS to HRMC. Seat belt was worn, no air bags deployed.

Accident in Reno County injures one Christmas night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss notes that the pursuit of talent and the height of inflation in 2022 has made changing jobs attractive this year.

"Unemployment rates have been at very low levels," Goss said. "We see continuing labor shortages in Kansas and in the rest of the region that we survey and for that matter, in the U.S., so if you want a job, it's a good time to be looking for a job."

Speaking generally, a new place has more flexibility in its hiring budget than the place people currently work does to retain workers.

"Wages are up, that's inflation adjusted wages, but that's for those workers that changed jobs," Goss said. "Those who are staying in their jobs, not so much. Your inflation adjusted wages are coming down, so that's the negative part."

The fundamentals, if you're willing to change industries, look okay for Kansas right now.

"Kansas has had some real good news in terms of the big industry, like aerospace," Goss said. "Agricultural prices are pretty strong. The farm sector is doing well. The businesses along what we call rural main street, not as well, those small businesses in leisure and hospitality, restaurants and bars and hotels and motels."

Looking forward to 2023, energy prices and borrowing costs look to be a further constraint on the rural economy, but if you can find people and capital, there will be room for growth.

Goss: Changing jobs has been how you get raises in 2022

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel looks ahead, she sees a chance for Hutchinson to get into new areas of the economy, if the right companies come along, thanks to government groundwork laid in 2022. The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 was signed by President Biden in August.

"In our pipeline of projects, we have seen more things related to semiconductors," Teufel said. "They also are kind of waiting on what that CHIPS Act means for them. It also means they may be waiting on a contract with an automotive company, it may be that there's another joint venture partner that they are waiting on. All of those things remain to be seen, but if I were to make predictions for the future for us, I think we do have a space in that semiconductor and that chips industry here."

Also, the state government's passage of the APEX bill and the subsequent announcement of Panasonic's plant in DeSoto may have some downstream development opportunities.

"The state has really been working hand in hand with Panasonic to make that an easy transition," Teufel said. "This is going to be a multi-year ramp-up in getting that site ready, but they are telling us, the bill, the APEX bill that was written to incentivize Panasonic, was written in a way to incentivize them to also bring suppliers to Kansas. I think all of us are just waiting to see, what will that mean for us? Many times, we get these projects in under a code name that's very nondescript and you can't tell what it is. We could be submitting sites on a supplier to Panasonic and we just don't know yet."

Panasonic hopes to begin production in Kansas in the spring of 2025. Once complete, the facility is likely to produce lithium-ion batteries to supply to Tesla.

"This is going to be a multi-year ramp-up in getting that site ready, but they are telling us, the bill, the APEX bill that was written to incentivize Panasonic, was written in a way to incentivize them to also bring suppliers to Kansas. I think all of us are just waiting to see, what will that mean for us? Many times, we get these projects in under a code name that's very nondescript and you can't tell what it is. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 308 Assistant Superintendent of Special Education, Jessica Engelland said that the new kitchen constructed at Hutchinson High School is a part of teaching students who need it about practicalities of life after school.

"We revamped that entire space for an entire life skills classroom,"&nbsp;Engelland said. "There's a washer and dryer. There's a whole like, living setup, there's a bathroom, there's a kitchen. It's an entire space. It actually started with Mike Chapin, who is the husband of a former employee who passed. He gave a generous donation of some of the living space items and so it all just, it all started in that way. He wanted something for the population of those kids who need those skills to be successful beyond high school. Then, it just turned into a new kitchen and lots of new things for our students."

Parents teach those skills to their kids, but for those with developmental or motor issues, they need more practice.

"We know our parents are supporting students in that way, but it takes a whole team to help those students get to be independent with those skills. This is just another opportunity for some of our students to be able to practice those skills."

"We have students in and out of that classroom all day long, working on a variety of things. Parts of the day, they are doing kitchen related items, we also have a program which assesses job skills. That's in that classroom, as well. We have lots of students throughout the entire school day using that space."

The project cost of the upgrade when approved in August was $63,633.

Hutchinson Pastors talk about Christmas

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — An accident Friday morning sent one person to the hospital. 

According to official reports, the Reno County Sheriff's Office responded to Yoder Road and Eales Road South of Highway 50 Friday morning just after 11 a.m., where 43-year-old Anna Stach was&nbsp;traveling south on Yoder Rd in her 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. Stach hit a patch of ice causing her to lose control striking the northbound guardrail. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled three times before coming to rest on the roof. 

According to the report, Stach was not wearing her seatbelt and the airbags did not deploy. She was transported to the ER by Haven EMS.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Historic Fox Theatre recently announced the lineup for their Fox Classic Film Series. &nbsp;

The Fox Film Series is presented in partnership with PrairieStar Health Center, and will feature twelve films.  &nbsp;

The first movie in the series will be on Jan. 5, and will feature 1967’s ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?’ with Sidney Poitier.

“We started the summer before last with the ‘Ninety Years of Film Classic’ Series, as a way to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Fox Theatre,” Josh Davies, Executive and Technical Director for Fox Theatre, said. “It was really popular, so we announced another lineup of 12 movies, and it has continued to grow in popularity, so we keep doing it. We have great support from PrairieStar Health Center to make it happen, as our lead sponsor.”&nbsp;

Davies added, “we will continue to do it as long as people want to see these great movies.” &nbsp;

Davies is also the Film Programmer for Fox Theatre, and described his process for how he selected the series films. &nbsp;

“I look at movies that were award-winning, or stood out among different decades, since the Fox Theatre opened,” said Davies. “It’s kind of like putting a puzzle together because you have to find what’s available. We have license agreements with several of the major studios but not all of them, it just depends on what studio has the right to the movie now.” &nbsp;

Ultimately, choosing what movie the Fox Theatre can screen is just subject to what is available to them based off of that process. &nbsp;

  The Fox Theatre is regarded as the ‘State Movie Theatre of Kansas.’ &nbsp;

“That was voted by the state legislature back during the restoration of the theatre,” Davies explained. “I want to say it was the mid-90s, when they voted to name Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre the ‘State Movie Palace of Kansas.’” &nbsp;

According to Davies, the theatre’s impressive and vintage, original marquee is one of the oldest flashing displays of neon signage in Kansas. &nbsp;

Proceeds from the Fox Classic Film Series will go towards general operating funds for the Fox Theatre. &nbsp;

The 12 movies making up the Fox Classic Film Series are plentiful in variety and include films from 1939’s ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ to 1994’s ‘The Shawshank Redemption.’ &nbsp;

Other films include 1955’s ‘Picnic,’ which was shot mostly around Hutchinson, and in which Davies said, multiple Hutchinson natives appeared in. &nbsp;

“It’s trying to find things that our audience will want to see and that would be exciting to see in a historic theatre,” Davies said. &nbsp;

Fox Theatre presents Fox Classic Film Series

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With just today and tomorrow left for bell ringing, the Salvation Army's kettle fundraising goal is in sight.

"We have $4336.31 that's left on our bell ringing," said Maj. Paul James.

The year end mail appeal goal is still several thousand more dollars away.

"Just about half of our giving comes this time of year," James said. "Really, this is the largest fundraising period for most everybody, because this is the time when people think, oh, I should give."

There have also been lots of volunteers that have given of their time this year to help the Salvation Army.

"This year, we've had more volunteer hours," James said. "I would say, in a range of 100 to 150 more hours of volunteer time, compared to last year. It's up significantly. Really, three people have taken it upon themselves to help us ring bells this year."

The kettles will be out until 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve at nine Hutchinson locations.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The chaplains for law enforcement and the fire department in Hutchinson are going to feed those they serve on Christmas Day.

"Partnering with Elliott Mortuary and Hog Wild, we're going to feed all first responders who are on duty Christmas Day and who are serving our community," said Chaplain Richard Haley. "We're going to take meals to some and then some are going to come to our church and pick them up there."

Haley is a chaplain and the minister at Riverside Baptist at 1100 West 21st.

"Around 65 meals will be served," Haley said. "We appreciate also Village Inn at Thanksgiving and Hog Wild at Christmas helping with providing some of the food for that. Our church family is going to provide the rest, the different side items and things."

This is the first year for the chaplains to provide this service.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas knows that for the over 1 million Kansans estimated to do their year end holiday travel by car in 2022, they'll pay less at the pump than they did last year at this time.

"The average today in Kansas is $2.76 a gallon," Steward said Thursday. "That's down 50 cents just in the last month. If we look back to where we were a year ago, it was at $2.98, so we're 20, 22 cents less than that. It's certainly a good trend that we've been seeing for drivers, in terms of saving money."

The national average as of Thursday was $3.10 a gallon. Area counties are, as usual on both sides of the state average.

"Pay special attention to the battery, your tires, make sure your tires are properly inflated and have good tread, so you have traction if there is bad weather. Check systems like antifreeze, make sure that's in good shape, hoses and belts.&nbsp; Make sure your vehicle is in overall good shape."

Walk In Care locations will remain closed.&nbsp; If prescriptions were called in to the clinic pharmacy prior to Wednesday, December 21st, they can be picked up on Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. 

This is after the clinic acknowledged <a href="https://www.facebook.com/HutchClinicKS">on social media Wednesday night</a> that it had problems with its computer system that includes patient charts, lab orders, X-rays, medical history and contact information during the day Wednesday.

The IT department is working to fix the problem and the clinic apologizes for any inconvenience. They plan to update on Facebook as the situation changes.

Hutch Clinic with limited services Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel sees good news on the horizon for&nbsp;Siemens Gamesa, but she doesn't have specifics yet.

"There is great optimism for the future at&nbsp;Siemens," Teufel said. "I know that everyone's been worried about what it meant when they had a massive layoff this year. It really was the market conditions, that I think will rectify itself, partly because the production tax credits that were in the Inflation Reduction Act will start jumpstarting new wind farm development. It's just a matter of, well, how soon is that going to trickle down to the local plant?"

The timeline is different on these credits, so that changes the dynamics a bit, but Siemens isn't the only one looking at Hutchinson for growth.

"Production tax credits have always been a thing that has driven wind energy production in our country," Teufel said. "We've never had a ten-year runway for that tax credit. Having a ten-year certainty is a great thing. Sometimes, it also gives people such a long runway that there isn't quite as much urgency from the private sector to build new wind farms."

With the Siemens plant in Fort Madison, Iowa hiring, it is likely just a matter of time before Hutchinson also gets back up and running.

"There is good optimism in that sector," Teufel said. "It's just going to be a matter of, is it going to be 2024 when it comes back? When will production ramp back up here? It's just a matter of, well, how soon is that going to trickle down to the local plant?"The timeline is different on these credits, so that changes the dynamics a bit, but Siemens isn't the only one looking at Hutchinson for growth."Production tax credits have always been a thing that has driven wind energy production in our country," Teufel said. "We've never had a ten-year runway for that tax credit. Having a ten-year certainty is a great thing. Sometimes, it also gives people such a long runway that there isn't quite as much urgency from the private sector to build new wind farms."With the Siemens plant in Fort Madison, Iowa hiring, it is likely just a matter of time before Hutchinson also gets back up and running."There is good optimism in that sector," Teufel said. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz said they are having problems with the computer program at their office and cannot process any title work. 

As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the computer problems in Topeka were not resolved. 

Reno County is closed on Friday and Monday in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so please call the Treasurer's Office before coming in Tuesday to see if they are able to process titles yet.

Title work issues continue at Treasurer's office

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff's Office updated the public as of 4 p.m. Thursday that most roads in the county are clear with some slick spots. Highways are mostly clear but there may still be slick spots on bridges and overpasses.

Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain notes, "Until the road or air temperatures get above 15 degrees, salt will have little effect in melting ice."

 At the current temperatures, any melting will probably refreeze. 

"Most county roads appear to be in very good shape, but that is very deceiving due to the black ice in some areas," Brittain said. "If you have to be out, slow down and drive with caution."

Give yourself extra time to get where you are going and give plenty of following distance to the car in front of you.
