The Veterans Honor Banners project hosted by the Vieyra Honors Foundation (VHF) with support from the Chamber and the City of Hutchinson will be back in Downtown Hutchinson this fall.

Banners are on sale thru July 15, 2023 and will be displayed in Downtown Hutchinson from mid‐September through Veterans Day weekend. 

 There are just a few spots remaining for banners this year, so be sure to register soon.   

President &amp; Founder of VHF, Marla Booher,said she and her fellow board members are excited and grateful for the support they have received for the Veterans Honor Banners project. 

"This community really showed up to help us honor the Veterans in and from Reno County," Booher said. "We feel it is so important to continue to bring awareness and show recognition for those who have made the sacrifices they did to serve our country."

 There are currently over 4,000 Veterans in Reno County and it is the goal of VHF to be able to honor and recognize each one of them in some way or another.  VHF is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to support veterans’ programs in Reno County by providing resources through fundraising and awareness initiatives.

The annual Festival of Remembrance for Hospice and Homecare of Reno County to benefit the Hospice House has been scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18 at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

"This year will be our 22nd Festival of Remembrance," said Darla Wilson with Hospice. "Those dollars just go to offset all of the care and the maintenance and everything that's required to keep that building going and provide it to our community."

This one night of fun includes silent and live auctions, raffle drawings for big ticket items and even a car giveaway.

"We have around 50 seats remaining," Wilson said. "Those tickets are $85. You can purchase them on our <a href="https://www.hutchregional.com/hospice-homecare-of-reno-county/events/festival-of-remembrance/registration-sponsorship/">website</a>&nbsp;or come to our office and get those."

2023 marks the 12th year that Mel Hambelton Ford has pledged a vehicle donation for this premier fundraising event.

"This year, the car raffle ticket could win you a 2017 Ford Escape," said Diane Caffrey with Hospice. "It's a used vehicle. It has 68,000 miles on it. It's in great shape."

"You can either win the vehicle, if you win it, you may keep it," Wilson added. "Or, you can turn it in towards the purchase of a different vehicle. They'll give you a good value for it."

Hospice and HomeCare serves a 50-mile radius and serves patients in their homes, care facilities, and at the Hospice House.

22nd Annual Festival of Remembrance is Aug. 18

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Now in the Front and Main Galleries at the Hutchinson Art Center is "75 Years in the Making:" A Hutchinson Art Association Permanent Collection Exhibition. 

The exhibition will be on display through July 29th.&nbsp;

Go to the Hutchinson Art Center on Friday, July 7 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to enjoy the wonderful pieces from the Hutchinson Art Association permanent collection as well as welcome the new Executive Director John Eberly.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Art Association was founded in the spring of 1949 by board members Ernest Dewey, Martha Hamilton, Mrs. Jack Jarrot, Ed Wiley, Josephine Dalton, Marguerite Sours, and Shirley Schmidt. 

Its first big exhibition was held on June 12, 1949 in the auditorium at Hutchinson Community College, then known as the Hutchinson Junior College. The exhibit was a New York show from the American Federation of Art. Regional art was also shown in various classrooms. 

At the time, it was one of the most prestigious exhibits to ever visit Hutchinson, Kansas.

In the decades since, the Hutchinson Art Association has collected over 350 works of art by local, national and international artists. These works of art display on rotation year round in the Permanent Collection Gallery. 

The art within the anniversary exhibit represents some of the best the collection has to offer.&nbsp;

Art Center event is July 7

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cherie Sage with Safe Kids Kansas reminds us that after a close call in Kansas last month, it's still important to look to be sure children are brought inside and not left in hot vehicles.

"It actually doesn't even have to be that hot to have this happen," Sage said. "The summer schedules tend to be really, kind of disruptive. Kids are going to summer camp, or the family's going to do something different. Schedules tend to be different and less predictable. We call summer the trauma season. It's the most deadly 100 days of the year for kids."

More than half of heatstroke incidents with children in cars are preventable, but you need to plan ahead.

"Never leave a child intentionally alone in a vehicle for any amount of time," Sage said. "Not even if you think you're going to just run into the store for five minutes. Five minutes can turn into ten minutes, can turn into 20 minutes. The inside temperature of a vehicle can raise to dangerous temperatures in just those few minutes. While all of us think, there's no way I could forget my child somewhere, I couldn't forget them in the back of a car, it does happen. It happens more frequently than you would think and a lot of that is just because, with our busy schedules, our mind is on what we are doing."

Tell those responsible for watching your child to contact you.

"If you have someone that's providing care for your child, whether it's a child care provider or it's a grandparent, if they are expecting your child to show up in the morning, if they don't arrive, if you don't show up to drop them off, have a plan in place where they are going to call you and they are going to say, hey, I thought that Jenny was going to be coming today, we were expecting her, is she sick, does she have an appointment, what's going on? In many cases where children have passed away, a call like that could have been lifesaving."

Also, if you see a child in a hot car with no one around, call 911, then they can check it out and make sure everything is okay.&nbsp;

Hot car danger continues, even after holiday

MCPHERSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The McPherson Chamber of Commerce will be holding a ribbon-cutting to commemorate Stitches Quilt Shop coming under new ownership on July 14.&nbsp;

Kaylan Martin will be taking over the shop located at 102 S. Main St. in McPherson, Kansas.&nbsp;

Stitches Quilt Shop is a fantastic place for quilting enthusiasts young and old. It has a wide selection of high-quality cotton fabrics. 

The previous owner, Janet Yowell did a remarkable job growing the shop to over 2100 bolts of fabric during her tenure.&nbsp;

In June of 2023, Janet decided to pass the torch and sold the shop to Kaylan. 

This was a dream come true for Kaylan, who had aspired to own a quilt shop for many years. Janet continues to be involved as a mentor and friend.&nbsp;

Kaylan's journey in quilting began at a young age when she made her first quilt at 11-years-old. Her great-aunt, Juana McCann, played a significant role in guiding her through this creative process. 

What began as a hobby evolved into a lifelong passion for Kaylan.&nbsp;

Despite pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at Texas A&amp;M University, Kaylan managed to maintain her love for quilting. She discovered that engineering and quilting share similarities in critical thinking and creativity, making them complementary pursuits.&nbsp;

With Kaylan at the helm of Stitches Quilt Shop, the future of the store is in great hands. Customers can expect a continued dedication to providing high-quality fabrics and an atmosphere of learning and creativity.&nbsp;

Other McPherson Chamber members are encouraged to join the festivities starting at 10 a.m. if they are able. An open house will follow on Saturday, July 15.&nbsp;

🎥 WATCH: EAGLE Media Patriots Parade at 10 a.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;&nbsp;Jeremy Ehart will serve as the Parade Marshal for EAGLE Media's annual Patriots Parade on July 4.&nbsp;

He served as an American Legion Commander for his home post, Lysle Rishel Post 68 in Hutchinson for two terms, and he continues to stay active in the American Legion.&nbsp;

Ehart served on the Department Legislative Council, and served as the membership committee chairperson at the state level. His works include representing&nbsp;Kansas on the National Security Council, and being a graduate of the 2019 National American Legion College. He was even featured on the cover of the National American Legion magazine in February 2016.

Ehart earned his eligibility through his service in the United States Marine Corps where he served in 2F1, an antiterrorism unit, stationed out of Virginia. 

He was injured in a training accident in 2004 that left 60% of his body covered in third degree burns. He was medically retired from the military after his time in the hospital following his accident. 

He and his wife Kristy moved home after his service ended in 2006 and he joined the American Legion shortly thereafter.

Ehart utilizes the American Legion and his story to raise mental health awareness and battle the stigmas associated with talking about it.&nbsp;

He thanks his family and the American Legion for help in his own battles with mental health following his retirement from the Marines.&nbsp;

Ehart knows firsthand it is still hard for veterans to talk about topics such as mental health due to the stigma. That stigma was still rampant, especially among veterans themselves, in the mid-to-late 2000s when he retired from service.&nbsp;

Only recently has mental health, acquiring the proper help, and connecting veterans to healthcare channels become more of an open discussion.&nbsp;

Many veterans may feel obligated to continue to keep quiet about their struggles despite the fight for awareness in the modern age.&nbsp;

Ehart said he will continue to spread mental health awareness as he serves with the American Legion.&nbsp;

 Jeremy Ehart has been active in the Amercan Legion since joining in 2007 and is a proud Legionnaire, Sons of the American Legion member through his Grandfather’s WWII Service, and member of the American Legion Riders.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;&nbsp;Jeremy Ehart will serve as the Parade Marshal for EAGLE Media's annual Patriots Parade on July 4.&nbsp;He served as an American Legion Commander for his home post, Lysle Rishel Post 68 in Hutchinson for two terms, and he continues to stay active in the American Legion.&nbsp;Ehart served on the Department Legislative Council, and served as the membership committee chairperson at the state level. His works include representing&nbsp;Kansas on the National Security Council, and being a graduate of the 2019 National American Legion College. He was even featured on the cover of the National American Legion magazine in February 2016.Ehart earned his eligibility through his service in the United States Marine Corps where he served in 2F1, an antiterrorism unit, stationed out of Virginia. He was injured in a training accident in 2004 that left 60% of his body covered in third degree burns. He was medically retired from the military after his time in the hospital following his accident. He and his wife Kristy moved home after his service ended in 2006 and he joined the American Legion shortly thereafter.Ehart utilizes the American Legion and his story to raise mental health awareness and battle the stigmas associated with talking about it.&nbsp;He thanks his family and the American Legion for help in his own battles with mental health following his retirement from the Marines.&nbsp;Ehart knows firsthand it is still hard for veterans to talk about topics such as mental health due to the stigma. Patriots Parade Marshal: Jeremy Ehart

KINGMAN COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Monday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Peterbilt semi driven by&nbsp; 39-year-old Daniel&nbsp;Esparza-Ramirez was eastbound on U.S. 54 seven miles west of Kingman.

The semi rear-ended a 2020 Ram 2500 driven by Jose Manuel&nbsp;Bugarini, 23, Great Bend, who was slowing to make a right turn.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bugarini and passengers in the pickup identified as Fernando&nbsp;Barrera, 30 and Mario&nbsp; Martinez, 24, both of Great Bend to Pratt Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; The KHP did not have complete seat belt usage information or additional details on Esparza-Ramirez. He was not injured.&nbsp;

3 Kan. men hospitalized after semi rear-ends a pickup

HUTCHINSON,
Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson St. Vincent De Paul group is asking for help as you come to the fireworks at the Fairgrounds on the 4th of July.

"On the 4th of July at the fireworks, we're going to have trucks available to donate food," said Lovella Kelley. "It's called Celebration Food Drive. Come by and leave food for your fellow citizens. We have many calls for food at this point and our supplies are low."

They will have several locations where you can bring items.

"Look at the VIP parking lot at 20th and Poplar and inside the fairgrounds gate there by the fire station and at the driveway for the splash pad on Severance and then at Holy Cross, we'll have trucks," Kelley said.&nbsp;

The need across the Hutchinson community has been as great this year as ever.

Most needed are canned meat and tuna, fruit, peas, tomato soup, chicken noodle soup, hamburger helper, instant oatmeal, snacks, cookies and instant potatoes.

SVDP holding food drive at Hutch fireworks

Summertime on the farm is in full effect. We seem to awaken a bit earlier with the sun to accomplish tasks before the heat of the day sets in. We also seem to go to bed much later to take advantage of the extra daylight.&nbsp; &nbsp; It’s a constant state of “go-go-go” most days right now with an occasional slowdown if a rain shower pops up. &nbsp; After going through the items of the day over coffee, my husband is usually the first one out the door. We are generally going different directions for the majority of the days right now, but we’re always touching base with quick phone calls and text messages. &nbsp; Sometimes the text messages between us consist of a brief “OK” or a thumbs up emoji. Sometimes the text is simply a link to a news article one of us finds interesting. Other times it’s a silly TikTok or Facebook Reel we know will give the other a good chuckle.&nbsp; &nbsp; Many times the text message thread between us includes silly GIF responses. &nbsp; A perfect example of our daily communication during this time of the year was when I recently texted a selfie of me with a thumbs up showing my husband I had successfully backed a truck to and hooked a trailer to the ball hitch without any help – a task I like to remind him I am fully capable of accomplishing. &nbsp; “One try,” I included in the text message accompanying the photo.&nbsp; &nbsp; His response: A black and white GIF of battle-worn actor Gerard Butler playing King Leonidas&nbsp;from the movie 300&nbsp;with the words “MY QUEEN.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Another example was when we were looking for a small part needed for the planter. When I thought I had found the item I texted him a picture of it with “Is this it?” in the message. &nbsp; While his response was a quick, “Yah,” I responded back with a GIF of a crowd wildly applauding. &nbsp; I’ve had many times in my adult life that I have reflected on how lucky I am to be living in this era. I often wonder how those before me handled life in general, let alone life on the farm without all of the modern tools, technologies and conveniences. &nbsp; Constant communication on our farm is a necessity to ensure we are as productive and efficient with our time as possible, especially during these busy summer days. &nbsp; I truly don’t know how those successfully communicated and maintained relationships before us during the busy summer farm days of yesteryear. I just know that I am truly thankful for the ability to instantly communicate with my husband, which allows us to not only efficiently accomplish tasks, but also allows us to provide quick words of affirmation or encouragement through silly animations, videos and emojis via text messages that help us navigate our busy summer days on the farm together. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There are many places to celebrate Independence Day in the area Tuesday.

Sterling, Kansas will present their major event of the summer, their Old Fashioned 4th of July. The day will offer a wide variety of family fun for kids and adults including their famous turtle races. &nbsp;

Events will offer a great opportunity to enjoy barbecue, listen to live music and enjoy one of the best fireworks displays around. There will also be lots of games and activities throughout the day and evening including one of the best 4th of July parades.&nbsp;

In Hutchinson, the annual Eagle Radio Patriots Parade is one of the highlights of summer for the Salt City.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Join Eagle Media and the City of Hutchinson on downtown Main Street starting at 10 a.m. The event is sponsored by Allen Samuels and Eagle Radio, including My 93.1, KWBW 1450AM/98.5FM, and Country 102.9 as well as Hutch Post.&nbsp;

Later Tuesday, the City of Hutchinson and Showalter Fireworks are having their annual Fireworks Extravaganza the&nbsp;night of July 4 at&nbsp;the Kansas State Fairgrounds, Lot C at dusk.&nbsp;

McPherson is also getting into the Independence Day fun with their Fireworks and More! at Wall Park event. The dedication of the Wall Park playground will be at 7 p.m. &nbsp;

There will also be a variety of activities for kids including,&nbsp;face painting, tattoos, glow bracelets, and more. &nbsp;

Live music will start at 7:30 p.m. with Petty Cash, followed by a fantastic fireworks show at dark. &nbsp;

A firework display will close out the night in Kingman at 9:45 p.m. &nbsp;

Arrival will begin at 7:30 p.m. The free outdoor event will include family fun with games, giveaways, and food for purchase, including Salted Creamery ice cream.&nbsp;

Kidron Bethel Village, a Bluestem Community, is located at 3001 Ivy Drive in North Newton. &nbsp;

Parking for the event will be marked. Lawn chairs are recommended for fireworks viewing. Flashlights may be helpful for navigating to and from parking areas. There is no admission charge.&nbsp;

Celebrate Independence Day in several communities

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson art teacher Kara Vaughn was pleased with the way that her Chalk The Town event went over the weekend.

"For the first event, the kickoff event, I'd say around 50 to 100 people came," Vaughn said of the Friday night event in George Pyle Park. "They chalked on the mural and then left. Some people stayed and hung out for the whole thing and made a lot of artwork through the whole area, not just the mural. It was really fun to see so many people come and hang out and have a good time. It was really fun. The second event, the main event in Carey Park, I believe that there was over 500 people that came."

Vaughn got that number from the Hutchinson Zoo, as they were counting as people went through their area. The whole event was put together in a matter of weeks, after Vaughn's videos went viral on TikTok.

"With the time frame and the circumstance of everything, I don't think it could have been executed better," Vaughn said. "Honestly, I think that we have something to work with to bring it back for next year and people are super excited already for next year's event, too."

Vaughn said her goal of bringing in people from out of town was met, as people from hours away came to Hutchinson to be a part of the event.

"They chalked on the mural and then left. Some people stayed and hung out for the whole thing and made a lot of artwork through the whole area, not just the mural. It was really fun to see so many people come and hang out and have a good time. It was really fun. The second event, the main event in Carey Park, I believe that there was over 500 people that came."<figure>

The whole event was put together in a matter of weeks, after Vaughn's videos went viral on TikTok."With the time frame and the circumstance of everything, I don't think it could have been executed better," Vaughn said. Chalk the Town a big draw

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Jon Richardson said Monday that the next steps in the police chief search are coming this month.

"We're looking at mid-July," Richardson said. "We'll have, I believe, around four finalists to interview in person, to look at taking on that role. A decision will be made from there."

If it turns out to be an outside hire, moving that person to Hutchinson will take some time, too.

"I would think, if you're interviewing mid-July, you're looking at another month or month and a half, so later in August, Labor Day weekend time period."&nbsp;

The city's police department has around 80 employees, and according to recruiting materials, an adopted budget of more than $12.56 million this fiscal year.&nbsp;

Richardson: Police chief search continues

LYONS, Kan. — The office of U.S. Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01) is hosting mobile office hours during the month of July. 

Representative Mann's staff will be visiting counties across the First Congressional District to offer assistance with federal agencies.

On Tuesday, July 11, Mann's staff will be in Rice County at the&nbsp;Lyons Public Library at 201 West Main from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Please contact the Manhattan, KS office at 785-370-7277 with any questions about the mobile office hours.

Only Congressman Mann's staff will be present for the mobile office hours, the Congressman will not be in attendance. The mobile office hours are reserved for assisting Kansans with federal casework.

Mann's staff in Lyons July 11

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County government is reminding citizens, effective in July the Board of County Commissioners will now hold their regular meeting on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. 

When there is a fifth Wednesday in any month, a regular meeting will be scheduled for the purpose of transacting a regular business meeting or holding a work session.

Reno County Commission meetings will continue to be held at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse located 111 W. 1st Ave. 

The next scheduled Reno County Commission meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 12.

Any cancellation of the fifth Wednesday meeting will be announced the week prior to a fifth Wednesday. All second, fourth and fifth Wednesday meetings will be convened pursuant to K.S.A. 75-4317 et seq.

Reno County commission meeting dates moved

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will look at a resolution for sending out for the bonding of previously approved city projects at its meeting Wednesday morning after the July 4 holiday.

The approval amount is $2,600,000. The bonding would be for&nbsp;$2,444,000, with additional monies going toward the cost of the bond sale.

The projects this would encompass include:

14th at Marland &amp; Hoagland Bridge, estimated at $1,050,000

Harsha Park Improvements estimated at $350,000

Playgrounds -Grandview and Herman Bunte estimated at $275,000

City Hall HVAC Replacement estimated at $160,000

Woodie Seat Design and Study estimated at $450,000

Approval of the resolution will allow staff to place the bonds out to bid and advertise the bonds.

The bond sale is scheduled to be August 14th, with council approval at the August 15th council meeting. Closing on the bonds is anticipated to happen September 12th.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

City council to bond projects after holiday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas is reminding everyone to look out for and yield to roadside workers.&nbsp;

"There's still going to be emergency responders out there on the road helping people with broken down cars or whatever the situation is," Steward said. "We're urging drivers to just remember the Move Over law in Kansas and across the country. Move over a lane, if it is safe to do so. Definitely slow down whenever you see flashing lights of a tow truck, a police or a highway patrol vehicle. Just give those people some extra room to do their jobs."

This can save the lives of those on the road just trying to help others out.

"Often times, they are working just feet from speeding traffic," Steward said. "It's an unfortunate anniversary for our organization. There have been two AAA tow drivers struck and killed over the July 4th weekend in recent years. It hits home for us, for sure."

AAA Kansas, with support from other traffic safety organizations, will be introducing a bill during the 2024 Kansas legislative session to expand the Kansas ‘Move Over’ law to cover any disabled vehicle on the side of the road.

"We just want that to start being people's mindset as they are driving," Steward said. "If you see a work vehicle or a stranded motorist on the side of the road, just be courteous and safe and move over a lane and slow down."

On average, 24 emergency responders die each year while working at the roadside. That is one death every 14 days.

AAA Kansas: When you see flashing lights, move over

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kasb.org/45132?articleID=138966">Kansas ranks 17th in the nation in people who have a "high quality" postsecondary credential, according to a group that promotes learning after high school</a>.

"Even with recent concerns about, is a college degree worth it and student debt and all these things, which are real concerns, the fact is, the higher level of education a person has, on average, the more they make, the less likely they are to be in poverty, the more likely they are to be employed, the more household wealth they are likely to achieve," said Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards.&nbsp; 

The Lumina Foundation&nbsp;<a href="https://www.luminafoundation.org/stronger-nation/report/#/progress/state/KS" target="_blank">report</a>&nbsp;says 55.7 percent of Kansans aged 25-65 have such credentials.

"If a state has higher educational attainment, all those benefits apply to the state, as well," Tallman said. "It's an important outcome of education, both at the individual and at the state, or for that matter, even national level."

The key here is that, other than the very young end of that range, those credentials were most likely earned before the pandemic.

"The average earnings, if you have not finished high school, is about $30,000 a year. Every other educational increment increases that. Graduate and professional degree earnings are more than double that. Over a lifetime, that really compounds. That doesn't count other benefits."

As income rises with credentials, poverty declines. In 2021, Kansans without a high school diploma had a 20 percent poverty rate; high school graduates had a 15 percent; up to two years of college, 9 percent; and those with a four-year degree or more, 4 percent.&nbsp;
