HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The <a href="https://cosmo.org/">Cosmosphere</a> announced on May 8, they are joining museums from across the U.S this summer, in the Blue Star Museum Initiative. The Blue Star Museum Initiative is a program which provides free admission to currently-serving U.S. Military personnel and their families.

This year, the program will begin on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, and will end on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

“Cosmosphere is grateful for the service of these men and women and proud to welcome them and their families to experience our Hall of Space Museum,” Mimi Meredith, the Cosmosphere’s Senior Vice President of Communication and Chief Development Officer, said.&nbsp;

The free admission program is available to those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces and up to five family members. Qualifying members must show proper identification for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Child Care Task Force is holding a special event on Thursday, May 11, 2023 to unveil the Retention Grants program for local child care providers, funded through Reno County and City of Hutchinson ARPA funding. 

In addition to celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week and Provider Appreciation Day, the task force wants to express gratitude for the unwavering dedication to the children of Reno County that child care providers have and provide those businesses with essential information on how to apply for these valuable funds to support the continuing health of each business.

The event is free from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. May 11 at Stringer Fine Arts Center at Hutchinson Community College.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There will be dinner provided at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7:00 p.m., where they will go over the Retention Grants application process and update providers on the Task Force's latest initiatives for child care in Reno County.

Child care provider event is Thursday

The saying “April showers bring May flowers” is what runs through my mind every spring. It’s a saying that has held true for almost every year I have lived on our Kansas farm.&nbsp; &nbsp; Like clockwork, the crocus and daffodils are the first to appear followed by my tulips, lilacs and peonies. Add in the fruit trees blooming and you have a beautiful spring floral assortment.&nbsp; &nbsp; Generally, by the time my peonies and lilacs bloom, I can’t help but attempt to capture the aromas and beauty by arranging cuttings of these flowers into a table-top display to be enjoyed in my kitchen as a precursor of June’s wheat harvest. &nbsp; However, this year’s blooms never went on display to be enjoyed at my kitchen table. The sweet smells from one of my lilacs have been enjoyed only when I walk up to the bush and bring my nose close to the smaller-than-normal white blooms. &nbsp; I’m still waiting on my peonies to appear. Like normal, the plant has grown and buds have formed; but as I’ve kept watch over this plant anticipating its May bloom, I’ve been left wondering if we’ve somehow missed the last step and the flowers will not come this year. &nbsp; Perhaps it is just a little late to bloom this year, but I can’t help but wonder if the delay of my peonies and stunted lilacs are signs of what our wheat harvest will look like. &nbsp; It’s no secret that we experienced an incredibly dry 2022. The drought stressed our crops, stressed our water sources and stressed us. We had hoped for a wet winter, but instead it remained mild. It feels as if the first five months of 2023 is a continuation of last year’s drought.&nbsp; &nbsp; The ponds in our pastures, which would normally be filled by now, are totally dry. We’ve been watching our wheat slowly grow. We hesitated to begin the spring planting of our fall crops in hopes it would rain; and when we did begin planting, we planted the seeds deeper than we’ve ever planted them to ensure they had some moisture to begin their growth.&nbsp; &nbsp; My husband has always half-joked that when a farmer prays for rain, there’s more people praying for the opposite. He’s probably right. After all, people have parades, picnics, car shows, golf outings, garage sales, field trips and weekend plans that call for nice, sunny days to be enjoyed in the spring.&nbsp; &nbsp; Even though my prayers for rain might be outnumbered, I will continue to pray for it multiple times daily.&nbsp; &nbsp; I generally keep my daily prayers between God and myself, but like many other farmers, I’m openly calling for others to join me in our request. &nbsp; Please Lord, let it rain. &nbsp; "Insight" is a weekly column published by Kansas Farm Bureau, the state's largest farm organization whose mission is to strengthen agriculture and the lives of Kansans through advocacy, education and service.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gas prices are staying slightly above the $3 a gallon mark, depending on where you are in the Sunflower State, says Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.

"I think the fear of a global economic recession is leading to some of these falling prices we're seeing at the pumps," Steward said. "Crude oil dropped in the middle of last week to about $66 a barrel, which is pretty low for what we've seen recently. I see today, we're back up to about $73 dollars per barrel on the global market."

Area counties are still generally below where they were last year at this time, as of Monday.

"There's lots of oil market volatility, as we've seen throughout much of this year," Steward said. "In the past week or so, we saw sort of a pre-summer driving season lull in domestic gasoline demand. Maybe people are just kind of saving up until the kids get out of school. We should be seeing a pretty robust summer driving season starting soon."

It's also important to note that summer blend gasoline is more expensive to produce than winter blend and that factors like an additional ethanol percentage in those cars that can use it, like flex fuel vehicles, can have an impact.

"The summer blend gasoline should be out in the market now, which does typically raise the price of gas a little bit," Steward said. "Ethanol is able to put a little bit of a limit on the price at the pumps. It does have some effect of keeping costs down. That's one thing for drivers and something that we can expect going forward."&nbsp; 

The Environmental Protection Agency&nbsp;(EPA)&nbsp;has granted Kansas Gov. AAA: Gas prices still well below last year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A combined project totaling almost $10.4 million will involve a mill and hot-mix-asphalt overlay on about 35 miles of K-61 in Pratt and Reno counties.

The Kansas Department of Transportation project is expected to begin around May 22 and be completed around early September.

The Pratt County portion of the work will be on K-61 from just north of Pratt -- where the four lane-portion transitions to two lanes – north to the Pratt/Reno county line.

The Reno County segment will be on K-61 from the Pratt/Reno county line north to the south edge of the Ninnescah River bridge just north of Arlington.

During the project, traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should expect to slow down and stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

APAC Kansas Shears Division, of Hutchinson, is the primary contractor for the almost $10.4 million project.

Nearly $10.4 million project to resurface K-61 in Pratt, Reno counties

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — USD 308 held staff and community meetings at McCandless, Faris, and Lincoln Elementary schools on Wednesday, May 3, and Thursday, May 4,&nbsp; in an effort to gather input and answer questions about teacher shortage solutions for the district. With the goal of transparency, district leadership met at each site to engage the community in finding solutions.

The meetings provided an opportunity for staff, families, students, and community members to share their concerns and ideas regarding the teacher shortage. "The teacher turnover rate is typical for this time of year. However, we’re just not getting the applicants we usually receive to fill the positions,” stated Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson.&nbsp;

Other considerations that go into assessing the teacher shortage are declining enrollment as well as information learned from the facilities study. With the help of consultants from Schaefer Architecture (formerly Schaefer, Johnson, Cox &amp; Frye Architecture), who specialize in maximizing school building efficiencies, the facilities study has brought to light ways the district is losing money sustaining multiple buildings while serving fewer students.&nbsp;

With the goal of transparency, district leadership met at each site to engage the community in finding solutions.The meetings provided an opportunity for staff, families, students, and community members to share their concerns and ideas regarding the teacher shortage. "The teacher turnover rate is typical for this time of year. However, we’re just not getting the applicants we usually receive to fill the positions,” stated Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson.&nbsp;Other considerations that go into assessing the teacher shortage are declining enrollment as well as information learned from the facilities study. USD 308 working on teacher shortage

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a Monday email from Rebekah Starkey-Keasling, the Kendal's Koffee scheduled for Friday has been postponed. They are looking for a future date for the coffee.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Manager Kendal Francis is looking forward to Friday, as he will hold his first&nbsp;Kendal's Koffee from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Scuttlebutts May 12.

"Come out," Francis said. "It's a question and answer session with the City Manager. "I'm going to buy you coffee and food there from Scuttlebutts. It's your chance to grill me. I do intend to do this regularly. It typically works out about once a quarter. That's usually a good amount of time to build up lots of activity to give people questions."

Francis has been Hutchinson City Manager since January.

AgTrax receives honorary FFA Degree

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College announced Monday that Jeanna Esparza, Cosmetology Trainer, has been selected as the 2022-23 Dragon Educator of the Year.

Esparza was selected from nominees from all academic areas by the HutchCC Student Government Association (SGA) for the honor. The instructors are nominated by Hutchinson Community College students, and then complete a selection and personal interview process conducted by SGA. Esparza received her honor at the College’s commencement on May 5.

As stated by one of her nominators: “Jeanna is a wonderful and caring person. From the first class you have with Jeanna you can see how much passion and dedication she puts into being an instructor and how much she truly cares about her students academically and personally. Jeanna has been nothing but an amazing instructor and truly deserves to be recognized for all of her hard work and dedication.”

Esparza received her degree from Sidney’s Hairdressing College in 1988.

Esparza named Dragon Educator of the Year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The month of May is Mental Health Awareness month and <a href="https://locations.angelscarehealth.com/ks/hutchinson/angels-care-home-health-121.html">Angels Care Home Health</a> is doing their part to spread awareness with their 2nd Annual Fight the Stigma block party taking place on May 11. &nbsp;

 “So, the month of May is mental Health Awareness Month. It's been going on since 1949 in the US, actually been recognized,” Jaime Garcia, LPN and an account executive with Angels Care Home Health, said. “This will be our second annual mental health awareness event, our theme is Fight the Stigma. Typically speaking, stigma is a huge issue for a lot of people, makes people not want to talk about what they're going through.”&nbsp;

Garcia added, mental health awareness is so much more than a lack of communication. &nbsp;

“We [Angels Care Home Health] primarily serve the older population, our elderly generation,” Garcia said. “Especially that generation, they were just brought up to not talk about mental health or mental illness. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness and then also provide resources to our community.” &nbsp;

Those resources could take the form of Angels Care Home Health’s behavioral program with three behavioral nurses. These nurses are trained to help with more in-depth diagnosis, like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. &nbsp;

There is also an anxiety and depression program and an Alzheimer’s and dementia program. The latter is geared towards loved ones and caregivers of afflicted individuals to educate them on disease management, such as progression and medication. &nbsp;

Angels Care Home Health has partnered with many other local mental health providers to help spread their message of awareness and give out information in a safe and conversational community setting.&nbsp;

“Horizons is very much involved, they were here last year, they provided several volunteers for my event, and I couldn't have done it without them, quite frankly,” Garcia said. “Horizons Mental Health has a whole host of services available to individuals, not just in Reno County but spread out to other counties as well.” &nbsp;

Horizons Mental Health Center is part of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center’s umbrella.&nbsp; 

PrairieStar Health Center hosts a behavioral health department and is another partner in the Fight the Stigma block party.&nbsp;

Additionally, several drug and alcohol and recovery treatment agencies will be participating in the larger event. These include&nbsp;BreakThru Medical Withdrawal Management with Summit Surgical Hospital, the Substance Abuse Center of Kansas, Valley Hope, and more. &nbsp;

“Addiction and mental health, they go hand in hand so that's why those guys are involved,” Garcia said. &nbsp;

Even though Angels Care Home Health primarily serves the elderly, they do serve younger people and the Fight the Stigma block party event is for everybody of all ages. &nbsp;

It is free to the public, and all of the partner and sponsor agencies, over 30,&nbsp;will be handing out information on what their specific agencies do and the services they provide. &nbsp;

Due to the stigma they face, a lot of people who struggle with mental health issues tend to resort to several unhealthy vices to cope. Sometimes drawing them into a healthy environment where they can speak freely, or primarily&nbsp;seek help without judgement, can be a challenge. &nbsp;

One of Garcia’s solutions to that falls into the theme of the block party event, Fight the Stigma. &nbsp;

“I did not come up with the&nbsp;slogan, it’s sort of a thing that is out there,” Garcia said. “To go along with our theme, I've been listed the help of local fighters. &nbsp;Boxers, I've talked to the Hutchinson wrestling coach, several of the martial arts gyms around here to sort of help make that easier.” &nbsp;

In addition to all of the combat sports programs promoting the event to help welcome people to the safety of the event, there will be other activities. &nbsp;

“A lot of people don't like to talk about their personal experiences, but I have found that they will, like last year, they will come, and they will attend because we have a lot of other things going on,” Garcia said. “We have food, we have a bounce house, we have stuff for kids to do, activity sidewalk chalk, face painting. They may not openly talk about what they're going through, but they'll come and they'll get resources.”&nbsp;

Other entertainment will include music provided by DJs 620 in The Mix. &nbsp;

There will also be raffle prizes throughout the day. &nbsp;

The block party is idealized as a safe place for anybody with mental health illnesses regardless of how they approach the affliction they live with every day. &nbsp;

“Some people are very vocal about talking about their mental health and their struggles, and some are very private and that's just fine,” Garcia said. “My goal is to make sure that they can get the resources so that they know where to go for help, even if it's on a more private thing for them.”&nbsp;

Often attempting to talk about mental health and associated illnesses is taboo in small communities due to antiquated mindsets that silently promote negative stigma. Especially in rural communities. &nbsp;

Garcia places a big emphasis on communication. &nbsp;

“Talking about it and continuing to talk about it, talking openly about it to everybody,” Garcia said.&nbsp;“Having just a few conversations or a few closed meetings behind doors amongst professionals will never, ever get the job done.” &nbsp;

At the Fight the Stigma block party there will be speaking segments, as well as speaking opportunities for people to share their stories about mental health. &nbsp;

Block party to bring mental health communication into the open

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Delos V. Smith Senior Center has another meeting coming up of a support group dealing with caregiving. The group's next meeting is Tuesday, May 9.

As the population ages, more caregiving is being provided by family members in the home. Being a caregiver is a unique job and often full-time or more. The Caregiver Support Group will offer information, resources and strategies for anyone caring for a loved one over age 55. This group is not disability or illness specific.

The support group will meet at 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and be facilitated by Stacy Goss with Hospice and Homecare of Reno County. All sessions will be held at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center at 101 W. First St. in Hutchinson. Meetings are free of charge, no RSVP is required.

Hedrick's holding Baby Animal Festival Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you haven't booked your summer vacation yet, it's time, especially if you plan to fly, says Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.

"We're now less than a month away from the Memorial Day holiday, which unofficially kicks off the summer travel season," Steward said. "It could be a very busy one for travel, both on the roads and at the airport. On top of AAA reporting a significant increase in international travel bookings this year, up 200% compared to last year, the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), is now warning travelers that summer airline passenger levels are expected to be comfortably above pre-pandemic numbers."

If you are going to fly, it's best to plan ahead.

"If you can, try to book the first morning flight of the day," Steward said. "Early flights give you more flexibility, if there's a delay or cancelation and you need to reschedule. It just gives you more options of other flights, if you need to switch. With TSA projecting strong numbers this summer, make sure that you're arriving at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and at least three hours before international flights. You just want to give yourself extra time to get through security and get to your gate in plenty of time."

Steward also notes that if it is possible, avoid checking a bag. Carry-on luggage allows you to be more flexible if there’s a delay or cancellation.

HARVEY COUNTY&nbsp;— The Newton Police Department requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a missing Arkansas man who was last seen in Newton, Kansas.

The whereabouts of 79-year-old Roy W. McGonigal Jr. are unknown, and the public’s assistance is requested to help locate him.

Roy was last seen leaving a residence in the 400 block of East 10th&nbsp;St. in Newton, around 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 6.&nbsp; Roy did not arrive at his hotel in Newton and hasn’t been heard from since. Roy drives a light blue 2013 Toyota Corolla bearing Arkansas tag USACRXD. He was last seen wearing a white collared shirt, black pants, and black shoes.

Roy is a white male, approximately 5 ft. 8 in. tall, weighing around 184 pounds. He has brown eyes and wears glasses. Roy has a white beard and is balding with white hair. He requires oxygen to breathe, as he has been diagnosed with COPD and emphysema.

NICKERSON, Kan. — The last of the three community meetings for the upcoming Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Bond Issue is Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Nickerson High School Auditorium.

The proposal is a 9 year, $7.6 million bond. According to the district's <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vTNcvr5J1EibnPbbMRbWCDZ8nZqtoYv9r8RqMp0Y_3qxsKuwpRGgngN_OWw0-IXAL0qoQCM5bbrn9yg/pub">bond project FAQ</a>, there are several items to address.

Many of the current roofs have passed their lifespan and some are beginning to leak. The district plans to commit the necessary resources to get back to a manageable maintenance position on all the roofs to begin a systematic renovation or replacement on a fiscal timeline versus responding out of necessity each year.

The district has already begun the process of renovating the existing science rooms and prep areas at Nickerson High School using Capital Outlay funds. This process may include a series of phases to complete the renovation over the course of three years. With the passage of the bond, the project could be completed all at once. 

School security has become a critical issue in recent years. Beyond the obvious need to keep students and staff safe, the negative impact this can have on student learning, staff morale, and the public perception of a district when not addressed is of paramount importance. 

The district plans to focus on specific areas:

The construction of an additional set of vestibule doors at three of the campuses will provide another layer of security to district buildings. This will allow staff to further determine the reason for the visit. The fourth campus will have its main entry relocated to provide a more visible entry to office staff.

Currently, once buzzed into the building, visitors have free-run. Staff has no way to control their movement. The secondary set of vestibule doors, creating a vestibule, can help to control this.

Secure Entrance - Construct a secondary set of doors to close off the current entryway in front of the office to control building access upon entry.

Renovate/Upgrade Restrooms - Renovating the two restrooms adjacent to the auditorium will give the district the opportunity to upgrade them for ADA accessibility, while also improving public access during events in the building.

Enlarge Auditorium Lobby - Extend the current auditorium lobby out under the existing overhang to provide more space for gathering following performances and events.

Auditorium and Stage Renovations - Not having had a renovation in decades, the auditorium is in need of work. The plan is to expand the usable space on the stage, update and improve curtains, lighting, and sound, update auditorium seating to include ADA-accessible seats, and add a chair lift to the stage, as well as other aesthetic improvements such as paint, carpet, and window treatments.

Renovate ADA Restrooms in the K/PreK - The current facilities are not adequate in space or type. This would allow students and staff to use those facilities as intended without having to seek out a different restroom in another part of the building.  

Renovate Existing Restrooms to ADA Compliance - Student restrooms on either end of the building will be brought up to current ADA accessibility requirements.

Replace Exterior Windows on the North and West Sides - Replace drafty and leaking windows with energy-efficient windows.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education will meet on Monday and continue <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/67328aae-1dfd-4f56-9335-de2fbc7cd19e">discussions on another try after an $8 million bond issue failed in April.</a>

Also on the agenda for the board is recognition of the district's CTE scholars, an update on the district's health insurance plan and the introduction of a new class at Buhler High School.

The board will also hold two executive sessions, one for negotiations and the other for personnel matters.

The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.
