HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The next Adopt-A-Pet event is Saturday, July 8th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the EAGLE Media studios with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

"We are still at our max capacity, we're just not over it," said Michaela Schommer with the Animal Shelter. "We have 40 dog kennels in our dog center. They are large and typically, we have one dog per kennel. We don't like to double up. You know, if they are like little tiny Chihuahuas or little buddies that are puppies, there might be four to five in a kennel together."

There are currently 56 dogs at the shelter as of this week. Please stop by to adopt a new pet or make a donation to help with care and feeding of pets at the shelter.

"We don't want to be full at 40," Schommer said. "We always have to have open space for the strays, the Animal Control bite cases, things that have nowhere to go and anyone caring for them need to come in to us."

There is also a special deal on adoptions this month.

"Bissell are doing another big sponsorship event," Schommer said. "All of our dogs from July 6th through the 31st are going to be a reduced $50 adoption fee, except for puppies under four months."

Come play with the pets in the grassy area next to the studios at 8th and Main and enjoy some local community businesses that will also have booths set up on the EAGLE Media yard.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Central Christian School announced Thursday that an alumni mass choir will be performing at the school's 75th Anniversary Celebration and Stewardship Dinner on Saturday, November 11. 

All CCS alumni and former staff and board members are invited to sing with the current staff and high school choir. 

It is the hope of the school to have many of their former musicians return to the school to sing at this anniversary celebration.

CCS announces arrangements for 75th anniversary event

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Museum is having a 60th anniversary event July 15 at George Pyle Park in Hutchinson from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. 

There will be yard games, a dunk tank, a photo booth, food trucks, and a movie presentation of "A League of Their Own" to finish off the night. 

This is a free event to the public but donations are always welcome.

Ulster Project Hutch: Patriece Gallagher

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements on Wednesday noted the ability for the city to do additional work in its SAFE Sidewalks program this year.

"This year we had 55 applicants that came in, requesting over $170,000 worth of work to the sidewalks in the city," Clements said. "Out of the 55, we were able to award 17 of them. You had awarded a budget of $50,000. That came in a little bit over the $50,000, but we were able to work with the different commissions to find the over $4000 balance to be able to approve the 17 addresses."

The city was able to approve nine applicants in 2022.

"It's a five percent match from the homeowners to get the sidewalks redone," Clements said. "It's a 20 percent match from the landlords to get the sidewalks done. It's a great program to be able to improve around the community and we did take time to kind of focus on some of the major thoroughfares. You'll see, there's about five of them that will be done on 17th."

Clements encourages those who applied this year but didn't get awarded funds to apply again next year.

"It was put out for bid in March," Clements said. "It was approved in June and we'll have, that work will be done by the end of this year."

Clements also said they are working on other innovative ways to expand the program, but those still need to be fleshed out before she's ready to publicize them.

Sidewalk program continues to expand

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) will begin public hearings next week to give Evergy customers an opportunity to learn more about the company’s rate increase request and to make comments before the Commission.

The application, filed with the KCC on April 25, requests an average monthly rate increase of $14.24 for Evergy Central customers and $3.47 for Evergy Metro customers. Commission approval is required before a regulated utility can change its rates.

The first of three public hearings will be held on Tuesday, July 11 in Topeka at the Washburn Institute of Technology’s Conference Center at 5724 SW Huntoon beginning at 6 p.m.

KCC begins public hearings next week on Evergy rate increase request

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;A special event was held in Buhler’s Albert Becker Park as a check for $100,000 was presented as part of the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas (Pathways) Grant. The announcement came from Reno County government on July 6.

Pathways is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas initiative that is administered by the Reno County Health Department. 

Jake Schmidt, Mayor of Buhler, received the check presented by Michelle Vakulenko, Group Sales Consultant for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. 

Participating in the check presentation event were James Perry, Superintendent for the City of Buhler, Keith Pankratz, CEO of Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Tegan Meadors, Director of Buhler Recreation, Sarah Glass, Assistant City Clerk for the City of Buhler, and Sara Howard, Deputy City Clerk for the City of Buhler.

The grant money will be used for the Becker and Wheatland Parks Trail and Lighting Initiative that will include developing a one-fifth mile, 8-foot wide, ADA compliant, public shared-use trail around Becker Park in addition to paths connecting the perimeter trail to amenities in the park. 

Becker Park does not have any trails or sidewalks around the perimeter of the park or paths that provide a route to enter the park to access park amenities. Park amenities include a playground, one-half basketball court, picnic tables, a shelter building, horseshoe pits, and a green space. The trail around Becker Park will also connect to the existing City of Buhler sidewalk system. 

Wheatland Park currently has a one-mile loop asphalt trail with additional access paths throughout the park. The trail is one of the most used park amenities in the City of Buhler but has very limited lighting for evening and morning users. Providing lighting along the trail in Wheatland Park will extend the safe operating hours of the trail which will offer more outdoor recreation opportunities to the community.

The funds received from the Pathways grant require that the project is connected to a population of focus. The populations of focus for this initiative are seniors living at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community (SMRC). 

The construction of ADA compliant trails/sidewalks at Becker Park will create opportunities for seniors living at SMRC to utilize the park’s amenities in addition to providing safe walking facilities for seniors with disabilities and impaired mobility.

The project agreement is between the City of Buhler, Buhler Recreation Commission, Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, and HEAL Reno County as part of the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas initiative.

The total cost of the Becker and Wheatland Parks Trail and Lighting Initiative is $141,485.78. In addition to the Pathways Phase 2 implementation grant funding of $100,000, Pathways Phase 2 coordination funds in the amount of $10,000 will be used for engineering services, the City of Buhler will provide project oversite, in-kind labor, and fiscal management of the Becker and Wheatland Parks Trail and Lighting Initiative valued at approximately $8,800 and additional funds will be raised as needed.

Improving the walkability of Buhler with the new trail at Becker Park connected to the city’s sidewalk system and increasing the lighting at Wheatland Park is meant to enable people to reap health benefits and make the community a better place to live.

Buhler given $100,000 for parks project

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;Carriage Factory Art Gallery will be hosting an Art in The Park meet and greet event in Krehbiel Park in Newton on July 20.

People will have the opportunity to meet Women Artists of the West and Carriage Factory Art Gallery member artists at a fun evening in Krehbiel Park.

Activities will include plein air painting, live music by Boyce Ingram, and Louie Q's BBQ food truck. 

Additionally, there will be carriage rides with historical tours. Space is limited for carriage rides. Signup begins at 6 p.m. for rides of approximately 20 minutes that&nbsp;will repeat throughout the evening until 9 p.m. First come, first served.

Carriage Factory Art Gallery hosting Art in The Park in Newton

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Council member Steve Garza is hosting another Saturday event this weekend.

"At 9 a.m., I'm going to have another Zone meeting," Garza said. "Over there on Avenue B at 205 East Avenue B. Come out and talk to me. Be careful with me, don't chew me out too much. I do the best I can. I have met with Interfaith Housing. I just met with them last week. I'll tell you what we discussed a little with Interfaith Housing and how that's working with money going to housing. I'll try to have the Interfaith Housing person there to answer questions. Our great Interim City Manager is going to be there this Saturday to answer questions, so I hope to see everybody there."

The idea is that for people who aren't available during the week to come to the regular meetings, that they can still find out what's going on in the city.

"We have donuts and coffee," Garza said. "Come out and sit down and have a talk with us. It's been working out real great so far."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements reminded the City Council at their meeting Wednesday of the schedule for interviews for Police Chief candidates.

"The Chief of Police interviews, we are working on the schedule," Clements said. "We have four candidates. They will be done on the 10th and 11th and we're working on putting together panels for those interviews."

Clements: Police chief interviews next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the comments at the close of Wednesday's Hutchinson City Council meeting, Mayor Jon Richardson floated an idea about changing when the council meets.

"I would like to talk about moving our meetings back to the evenings," Richardson said. "5:30 p.m. There's a couple reasons. I know this has been done before and the idea was to get more participation from the community and during that phase, it didn't show much more people showing up. I think it's important to recognize that this is an unpaid position, so for people to run for City Council, they need to be able to keep their job. A lot of times, that is a conflict that prevents them from running for City Council. I would like to see our City Council meetings move to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, rather than 9 a.m. on Tuesdays. I know it's controversial, but there are some good reasons for it and I think, just the fact of opening it up for people to be able to run for City Council is a big part of it."

There was a little pushback from council member Stacy Goss just trying to figure out the logistics and council member Greg Fast made a solid point about employees that need to attend.

"My concern is city staff, then they have to be here," Fast said. "We've got the city staff here. Captain Collins, I'm sure, doesn't want to come and look after us in the evening. I'm sure they will do what we ask and be fine with it. Most of them are salaried."

Richardson acknowledges that it can't happen right away.

"I think it's something worth having more discussions about at the very minimum," Richardson said. "It's not something that we have to change for the next meeting, but over the course of the next few months or end of year or beginning next year, we could be looking at something like this."

It's really too late this time around to have an effect on who runs, as the filing deadline was June 1.

Mayor wants meetings moved

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man who drove onto a Louisville sidewalk and struck a Kansas family in town for an AAU basketball tournament in 2022 is still awaiting trial a year later.

Michael Hurley's bond was reduced in June to $50,000 cash as he awaits his final pretrial hearing August 15 in the crash that killed Trey Jones and injured his wife Amy and their daughter, then Nickerson prep and now Iowa Hawkeye Ava Jones on July 5, 2022.

According to reporting from <a href="https://www.wdrb.com/news/crime-reports/bond-lowered-for-man-charged-with-hitting-family-with-his-car-killing-father/">Louisville TV station WDRB</a>, Hurley faces&nbsp;charges of one count of murder, three counts of assault and one count of driving under the influence.

Hurley was on probation in Indiana for drug-related charges at the time of the crash, according to court documents detailing his criminal history.

Driver in accident that killed Nickerson coach, injured family still awaiting trial

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Wednesday passed the plat for the Kingpin Substation that will be constructed on land south of 23rd and Lorraine. Though the council didn't necessarily like the idea of what Evergy may build there, there wasn't much they could do, according to City Attorney Paul Brown, as ordinances are currently written.

"The only thing before you is to approve a final plat," Brown said. "That's a ministerial act. Evergy is combining four lots into one. They are entitled to do that. It's not out of the ordinary. The platting process has been followed. Really, that would be the only issue. I understand you've been lobbied by neighbors adjoining to the tract. None of those matters raised by them have anything to do with this plat and this is the only thing before you. You're not approving projects. You're not approving zoning. You're not approving anything except a plat. Evergy is entitled to have that approved, just like all the other plats that come before the council."

That answer didn't really satisfy Dan Garber of 1206 East 21st.

"Paul may be correct," Garber said. "However, I've seen city ordinances in other cities that relate to the placement and the effect of electric substations. I'm thinking that cities in the state of Kansas are allowed to have ordinances that pertain to the requirements that are put in there. I guess, we as a neighborhood have been shocked and surprised that this could come in without any public hearings. It feels like it was snuck in and it will impact our property values."

Evergy will likely begin construction on the substation in 2025 and complete it in 2027.

"We're switching over the transmission to Hutchinson to 115 kV from 69 kV," said John Miller, civil engineer with Evergy. "Doing that, we'll end up removing about three substations that are currently within the city. They are at 18th and Plum, 14th and Lorraine and 11th and Halstead."

The plat was approved on a 3-2 vote, with Steve Garza, Stuart Conklin III and Jon Richardson voting in favor and Greg Fast and Stacy Goss voting against.

Plat for Evergy substation goes forward

Sky Ryders Performing Arts Foundation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In 1955, H.D. “Prof” McCosh reorganized the three year old drum and bugle corps founded by the Lysle Rishel American Legion Post 68, and adopted the name “Sky Ryders.” After 35 years in Hutchinson, the corps relocated to DeSoto, Texas for financial reasons, and sadly, in 1994, folded.

Twenty-nine years later, Sky Ryder alumni led by Dr. Jay Smith have founded the Sky Ryders Performing Arts Foundation (SRPAF) in Hutchinson, with the intention of bringing the Sky Ryders back to the community where it began over seventy years ago. Men and women from California, Missouri, Montana, Texas, Wisconsin, and of course, Kansas, have come together to enable young adults to have the same sort of positive, skill and character building, artistic experience that they had as young adults.

Today, there exists thousands of Sky Ryder alumni, spread out all over the world. Many are physicians, lawyers, professors, engineers, scientists and dentists. They are college band directors, musicians, administrators, architects, accountants, and school teachers. Many more have owned private businesses, but all are hardworking, dedicated men and women. Each of them credit their formative time with the Sky Ryders in Hutchinson or DeSoto, as a reason for their success and joy in life.

For those reasons, the SRPAF is committed to bringing the corps back to Hutchinson. To restart a corps today takes a large amount of capital, volunteers and community partnerships. The return of competitive drum corps to Kansas will be achieved thoughtfully, one step at a time, and the finished product will be an organization that Hutchinson, and all of Kansas, can be proud. The SRPAF is raising funds from around the state, nation and world to make this a reality. It is working within the drum corps community to secure the best instruments, equipment, and anything else needed for its operation. It is working with local schools to find instructors and rehearsal facilities.

On Monday, July 17, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. the SRPAF will kick off its campaign. That afternoon and evening at Gowans Stadium on the HCC campus, the 20-time Drum Corps International World Champion Blue Devils from Concord, California will be rehearsing their 2023 production, and around 8 p.m. will be giving several performances for band students, alumni, and interested local community members from all over Kansas. There is no entry fee for the exhibition performances, though donations to the SRPAF will be accepted.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Second Avenue and North Walnut. 

The early Reno County Homesteaders had few options for jobs in 1873. The wholesale slaughter of what is estimated at four million bison near extinction caused many to collect the bones by the wagonload for money just to keep from starving. 

These bones were used by eastern manufacturers for fertilizer and shirt buttons, and piled at the location of today's topic. 

Fred Harvey worked with the A.T.&amp; S.F. Railway to build a first-class hotel with his restaurant in it. That hotel, designed by Louis Curtiss of K.C., cost $250,000 to build — the most expensive hotel in the state at that time. It was named the Bisonte after the bone pile that was located there. 

Construction was from 1906-1908. The first photo shows the Bisonte, new in 1908.

The second photo shows the north (track-side) view in 1920.

The third photo shows the elegant interior lobby.

The popularity of auto travel caused the railroads to slow passenger traffic and the Bisonte suffered too. In 1946, the American Legion bought the hotel for $25,000. But even the Legion couldn't make it work financially. 

In 1964, all the contents were auctioned off and the grand old building was razed in 1965. The fourth photo shows the Bisonte coming down (what a shame).

In 1967, the Ramada Inn constructed the current building. The fifth photo shows the 100 E. 2nd location today, now the New Beginnings - Meadowlark Commons &amp; Walnut Court Apartments.

BUHLER, Kan. —&nbsp;The Buhler Community Foundation announced on July 5, they are now accepting proposals for 2023 Fund for Buhler grants.

Each year the Buhler Community Foundation awards grants for programs demonstrating innovative ideas or solutions to critical needs in the Buhler community. To date, BCF endowed funds have given over $160,000 to support projects in sectors ranging from health and human services to the arts to parks and nature.

Applications may be completed online through a link found at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.buhlercf.org/grant-application" target="_blank">www.buhlercf.org/grant-application</a>. Proposals may be submitted until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15.

Buhler grant proposal deadline next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There are still spots for Session Two of the Hutchinson Art Center's Summer Art Camp. Session Two will start on Monday, July 17th and go through July 28th. 

Group A (ages 6-9) are meeting at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Group B (ages 10-13) are meeting from 11:00 a.m to noon Monday through Thursday, with free open art studio being from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday for students wanting to finish projects they started earlier in the week.

There are still plenty of spaces open for our July classes.  </figure>Hutchinson Art CenterHUTCHINSON, Kan. — There are still spots for Session Two of the Hutchinson Art Center's Summer Art Camp. Session Two will start on Monday, July 17th and go through July 28th. Group A (ages 6-9) are meeting at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Group B (ages 10-13) are meeting from 11:00 a.m to noon Monday through Thursday, with free open art studio being from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday for students wanting to finish projects they started earlier in the week.There are still plenty of spaces open for our July classes. Hutchinson Art Center July Summer Art Camp still has spots

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival is coming up in Newton, taking place on July 7 and July 8. The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival’s 2023 theme is Sun, Surf &amp; Sand Creek.&nbsp;

The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival is a dynamic summer festival, encouraging Newton and surrounding communities to celebrate and discover numerous fun and enjoyable events bundled together on the banks of Sand Creek.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sand Creek Festival, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) that originated in 2017 to promote and establish fun, endearing and educational local community-based events in the Newton, Kansas area.&nbsp;

Sand Creek Festival, Inc. also uses its physical inventory and resources to help other local festivals and organizations which include: The Newton Kiwanis Club, Sedgwick Fall Festival, 2019 Newton High School Graduation Party, 2021 Newton High School Prom, Harvey County Now Blues, Brews &amp; BBQ Event, Koerner Heights Youth Group, and the Harvey County United Way Chill Cook-off.&nbsp;

This year, Sand Creek Festival, Inc.&nbsp;will assist the Slate Creek PTO in raising money for the Slate Creek Inclusive Playground Project by using their brand-new Waterfall Dunk Tank. Instead of someone&nbsp;falling in a ton of water, a ton of water is dumped on particpants.&nbsp;

Caring Hands Humane Society will once again benefit from the Weiner Dog Races and costume contest at the festival. Bring your pet&nbsp;to run or dress to impress.&nbsp;

Events during the festival will range from entertaining to deliciously delectable, as well as competitive to educational. &nbsp;

The festival will boast multiple stage concerts and individual music performances. This year’s shows will be “for the girlz” with ladies taking the spotlight this year at the&nbsp;Country on the Creek Concert. Additionally, as part of this year's theme, this year’s Sand Creek Charli is a woman. &nbsp;

There will be several talent performances including dazzling magicians and ventriloquists.&nbsp;&nbsp;Other activities include a Ford Mustang car show and the Ponies of the New West. &nbsp;Finally, families can bring the kids into the YMCA Time Out 4 Kids adventure area with fun, interactive, athletic and educational activities.&nbsp;While there, stop and say ‘hi’ to this year’s&nbsp;Sand Creek Charli. &nbsp;The festival also holds an over-21 craft brew area following the theme of each year's festival.&nbsp;A Sand Creek Summer Daze Button must&nbsp;be purchased to enter festival grounds. Most events are free with the purchase of a button. Some events will have&nbsp;an extra fee attached.
