HUTCHINSON, Kan. — YMCA Hutchinson Branch Director David Foster said the hope is that the Y can find space where it is now to expand.

"We definitely hope to make some improvements to our facility here, renovations, maybe some expansions," Foster said. "Just kind of making sure that we're more on track and in line with some of our other facilities, which really allows us to do a lot of the great free programs and things like that in the community, continue to provide financial assistance to those who need it, but also make sure that we're up to date and having a nice, new facility that the community can not only enjoy, but also be proud of."

One of the areas a Y expansion would like to help with is child care.

"We've already got some models of that at some of our Wichita branches," Foster said. "We also have a partnership with the Wichita school district to have early learning centers, that zero to pre-K child care, not only in our YMCA facilities, but also at the schools themselves. If that's something that would benefit the community here, that's something that we feel like we have the expertise in and also some models for success."

Given the location of the Y and its proximity to the high school, collaboration with USD 308 will have to happen.

"They've been great partners so far," Foster said. "We have had some preliminary discussions with them, nothing set in stone yet, but also knowing that there may be some opportunities for us to share some facilities. Not only with them, we've talked to the Boys and Girls Club, the hospital, some other community partners that may be able to help us, not only expand our footprint, but also expand our reach into the community, which is also very important."

The Y understands that acquiring land around its current footprint means getting that land from the school district, most likely.

Events to kick off Christmas shopping season this weekend

NEWTON, Kan. —Two I-135 ramps in Newton will be closed at different times on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

The ramps that will close: the northbound ramp at Exit 31, at First Street, and the southbound ramp at Exit 31, at Broadway. The closures will be from around 9 a.m. to around 3 p.m., starting with the northbound exit, then the southbound exit later in the day.

The temporary closures will allow a pavement-marking project to proceed.

I-135 ramps in Newton closed part of Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thanksgiving travel volume will be almost back to levels before the pandemic, if estimates from AAA come true.

"About 90% of people traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday will be taking to the highway," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "It's a very driving heavy holiday. A lot of people just go in regionally or within state to visit to visit their friends and families."

AAA predicts 54.6 million people nationwide will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. That’s a 1.5% increase over 2021 and 98% of pre-pandemic volumes.

"In Kansas, about 525,000 of the 581,000 total travelers will be driving to their destinations," Steward said. "Pack your patience, slow down and just be extra cautious on the roads this week."

It's also important to remember that it gets dark earlier this time of year, so more of that driving will likely take place outside of daylight hours, or during the potentially&nbsp; blinding pre-sunset hour, if driving west in the afternoon.

"Slow down, drive for the conditions," Steward said. "Don't overdrive your headlights. We've certainly got deer to look out for as well on the highways. Be scanning the sides of the road constantly as you are driving, especially at night."

Some of the busiest driving times of the weekend will be on Wednesday after work and especially on Sunday as families travel back home after the long weekend.

AAA: Roads to be busy for holiday travel

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commission chair Daniel Friesen wanted the help of his colleagues to rein in his anger at the news that all of the focus groups for the Reno County child care study cited overly officious inspection standards enforced by local Health Department workers as a reason for some of the problems with child care in the county.

"We don't have time to talk with each other outside of this meeting," Friesen said Tuesday. "For a 15-minute conversation, to stifle that conversation is extremely disappointing to me. I am pissed off at what I heard today. I don't want to just dump all that on Randy without the two of you providing a balancing feedback."

Dr. Bradford Wiles said the <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/18ac1960-eea9-4dc1-bff4-7e6917db44ab">feedback here was unique</a>.

"I have done this kind of work in multiple communities across Kansas," Wiles said. "Never ever have I seen every group of respondents say something about this exact issue. I've had providers complain. Complain is not the right word. I've had providers voice their frustrations. I've never seen it in parents looking for care for example. They probably shouldn't even know about that, so there's clearly an issue here."

Wiles stated that every regulation has a reason that is founded in public safety. However, the chilling effect of a lack of grace shown to providers on things that are fixable issues that do not cause physical danger is a factor that may suppress child care supply in the community, especially among home care providers.

"It's the enforcement," Wiles said. "That's what the most important element of those discussions has been. It is shocking, to say the least."

Reno County has lost one center and six home care providers since June alone.

Reno County Commission chair 'pissed off' after child care report

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The chaplains for law enforcement and the fire department in Hutchinson are going to feed those they serve on Thanksgiving.

"This Thursday, we are providing Thanksgiving meals to our law enforcement, fire department and all first responders that will be out there protecting us and serving us while we are enjoying Thanksgiving with our family," said Chaplain Richard Haley.

They are able to do this thanks to food from Village Inn in Hutchinson and funds provided by Elliott Mortuary.

"We are delivering them to the different stations where they will be at so they can enjoy the meal as they are able," Haley said. "This is for the noon meal for those that are serving. We'll be delivering 65 meals to the various stations and the law enforcement center."

This is the first year for the chaplains to provide this service.

"This is our first time doing this," Haley said. "I sure want to thank Adam Wooten, who is also a chaplain with me, he and I came up with this idea to help and be a blessing. This is our first year. We look forward to building on it in the years to come."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  On Wednesday, November 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Union Pacific Railroad will be closing East 30th Avenue between K-61 and Apple Lane for railroad bridge repairs. Traffic will be detoured. 

Traffic on 30th will be sent down Apple Lane to 17th coming in from the east and not allowed to exit K-61 going east if coming from the west.

Fee Insurance makes Best Place to Work list

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Dr. Bradford Wiles from Kansas State University presented to the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday on the long-awaited child care study. A big key recommendation is that Wiles believes a child care resource leader that he called a community development specialist needs to be hired somewhere.

"My experience has been that, if it's part of another job, it gets the amount of attention that part of your job does," Wiles said. "If someone has a job dedicated to moving this forward, you'll see a lot more progress. In fact, in communities where they have those positions, you see a dramatic change in progress and increasing capacity."

Wiles also said immediate support is needed for current providers, especially in home providers.

"In rural areas, it is almost exclusively in home providers," Wiles said. "They require support. It is a difficult job, particularly when you are faced with some of the challenges of rurality. Those communities depend almost exclusively on in home providers. Supporting them is critical. The more of those you lose, the more you are going to reduce, essentially, your available workforce."

Also, the ARPA money that prompted the study is one source, but money will be needed beyond the ARPA disbursement window.

"Funding like this comes in and it really helps, for a little bit," Wiles said. "I would encourage you to start making plans now for filling these gaps over time. I think, what you will see, in fact, data across the country demonstrates very clearly that your businesses will benefit in a way that they will likely be willing to do some filling of this funding after it expires. They'll see the benefits in productivity, reduced absenteeism, the ability to recruit and retain talent."

Commissioners agreed that the county can help provide resources for the specialist if needed, but that the private sector is where the job needs to reside, so that there is no stigma or bureaucracy that people need to deal with when talking to this person, wherever they end up.

Child care study shows need for additional specialist in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The 2022 Reno County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hutchinson Community College's Stringer Fine Arts Center. High school students from across Reno County will be sharing their business ideas both in formal presentations and on the Tradeshow floor.

Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge is today

RENO COUNTY — The Reno County Sheriff's Office on Monday posted an update that they are still looking for 67-year-old Leonard Anthony Williams. He was first reported missing back on October 9. They added that he was last seen in the area of Fun Valley.

There is still an active investigation taking place in attempt to locate Williams.

Williams was last seen wearing an orange sweater with blue jeans.  If anyone has seen him, please notify the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE: Sheriff's office still looking for Hutchinson man

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Reno County Toy Run over the weekend in Hutchinson saw 380 motorcycles, 835 toys, more than 150 bicycles donated, and 148 bowls of chili served on Nov. 20. &nbsp;

The toy run&nbsp;started at 10 a.m. at <a href="https://saltycycles.us/">Salty Cycles</a>, 129 E. Sherman St. &nbsp;

Riders and their street-legal motorcycles gathered as they prepared to take new and unopened toys to Moose Lodge on the other side of Hutchinson. &nbsp;

“This is 'give back to the community' for us,” Scott Marshall, Salty Cycles owner, said. “We’ve donated almost half of those bicycles that are out there. That's our 'give back,' you know? We’re small business. We are low cash flow, but, for me, it’s giving back to the community.” &nbsp;

Marshall said this was Salty Cycles second year participating in the Reno County Toy Run. &nbsp;

Last Sunday was the 39th year for the Reno County Toy Run. &nbsp;

The Reno County Toy Run started when Alan Turner and his friends saw a need in the community, and set to work organizing what would eventually become the first iteration of the toy run. &nbsp;

The first toy run culminated at the police station. &nbsp;

“Then the following year, someone else had picked it up, and we just thought we’d probably do the same thing,” Turner said. “Someone else picked it up, and got the parade permits, and actually started it for the parade part and everything.” &nbsp;

Since the first and second toy runs, Alan Turner had not been too involved. He became a part of the Reno County Toy Run again, 19 years ago. &nbsp;

Tammy Ward-Railsback, with the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/RenoCountyToyRun">Reno County Toy Run committee</a>, commended <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Egbertliquor1">Egbert Liquor Store</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SaltyCycle">Salty Cycles</a> for their help.&nbsp;

For two years, the Reno County Toy Run committee had to stop the bicycle donations because it did not have a place to store them.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Fortunately, Salty Cycles offered their other building to store the bikes. &nbsp;

"As far as I know, we are the only toy run in the immediate area that actually has this many bicycles,” said Ward-Railsback. “It’s something that we started many years ago. This year we’re really proud after two years of a lapse, to bring back the bicycles.”

“We give some to Nickerson, Haven, Salvation Army here for&nbsp;Hutchinson children, so we just give them to everybody,” she said.

 Salty Cycles donated more than $6,000 in bicycles.&nbsp;

“That is unprecedented,” Ward-Railsback said. “And on top of that, Tracy Phleger-Frick with Egbert Liquor, every year she does a monetary donation, she raised over $3,000 this year. Her and Sugarleaf Distribution matched dollar-for-dollars, so they raised over $6,000 just in cash.” &nbsp;

The Reno County Toy Run committee will use that money to fill voids that the toys do not fill, according to Ward-Railsback.&nbsp;

 “The community was just awesome this year,” Ward-Railsback said. “We couldn’t thank everybody enough.” &nbsp;

 The Reno County Toy Run concluded at Moose Lodge, located at 1401 E. 1st Ave., with a chili feed, shirt and button vendors, and live auction.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Toy Run brings back bikes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 2022 Project Concern donations have concluded at the Eagle Media Center in Hutchinson. The 2022 total is down slightly from 2021, with listeners contributing $12,790.28 this year. Dillons is also contributing $2500 in gift card value to add to the total.

KWBW’s Project Concern for 2021 raised $17,386.88 from BW radio listeners.

BW put its turkeys back in the drive-through at the studios again after being unable to do so in 2020 due to COVID-19.

KWBW obtains gift cards each year from Dillons for the Salvation Army to distribute. Between public donations and matching from Dillons, in 2021, Project Concern helped 640 families. The Salvation Army tells KWBW that they will help 700 families this season.

Project Concern would not be a success each year without the help of BW's generous listeners. Our thanks to all of those who helped to give families in Hutchinson a Thanksgiving to remember.

Project Concern raises over $12,000 in 2022

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Marshal Mike Cain is clear. Frying your Thanksgiving turkey has its risks, but if you feel it necessary, there are some precautions you should take.

"It should be in a commercially made, purchased fryer, not a homemade fryer," Cain said. "That's because the commercial ones generally have temperature settings and thermostats on them, so you're not getting that oil way, way too hot."

If the oil is too hot, it can ignite on its own, separate from the turkey. Also make sure the fryer is on level ground, so that it can't tip over and lose the hot oil. When it comes to the bird, it needs to be fresh or fully thawed.

"Make sure everybody stays away from it, including the pets," Cain said. "You don't want your 120 pound lab running up and hitting it and knocking it over. Keep everybody away from it, on level ground, at least 10 to 15 feet away from any structure, but anything combustible. That's house, garage, vehicle, pile of firewood, anything combustible, at least 10 to 15 feet away."

The danger is really the expansion of the steam created if the bird is not fully thawed, as it can make the hot oil go places it shouldn't, which is how such fires generally ignite.

"I would suggest taking and using a paper towel and patting it down, getting as much moisture off of it as you can before you decide to put it in there," Cain said. "That's what ultimately causes the problem is that frost and that moisture boiling off. Then, when you go to put it in, do it very slowly, it's not just a walk over and drop it in."

Cain said such fire calls are relatively rare. His department sees one about once a year.

Fire Marshal: If you want fried turkey for your holiday meal, do it safely

Former NASA astronaut and children’s book author, Commander John B. Herrington, Chickasaw, will be at the <a href="https://cosmo.org/">Cosmosphere</a> in Hutchinson, Kan. on&nbsp;Dec. 6. &nbsp;

Commander John B. Herrington is a retired Naval Aviator and engineer who holds a PhD in education. &nbsp;

He now devotes himself to teaching others about the importance of understanding and caring for the Earth through science and exploration.

In 2002, Herrington launched aboard STS-113, the sixteenth space shuttle mission to the International Space Station. &nbsp;

Herrington became the first NASA astronaut from a federally recognized tribe to fly to space.&nbsp;

At 10 a.m., Herrington will teach students from districts in Cosmosphere’s LaunchLearning program about the process for naming stars and planets, and about how names can express culture. &nbsp;

Herrington will sit down with kindergarten through third grade LaunchLearning students, at 1:30 p.m., for a&nbsp;special story time. He will read from his own book for young children, “Mission to Space,” published by Chickasaw press.&nbsp;

“Mission to Space” is available for purchase in the Cosmosphere gift shop. &nbsp;

Students from anywhere in Kansas can join either of these events free via livestream. Teachers can contact <a href="mailto:schools@cosmo.org" target="_blank">schools@cosmo.org</a> for access instructions. &nbsp;

Additionally, on Dec. 6, Herrington and Cosmosphere staff will film a video submission to an International Astronomical Union competition to name a star and planet. &nbsp;

Their proposed name for the star and planet will be revealed that morning and will have Chickasaw cultural significance. &nbsp;

The video will become part of the classroom materials available through the LaunchLearning program. &nbsp;

First Native American astronaut at Cosmosphere Dec. 6

Even as Thanksgiving draws near, it’s easy have a pessimistic perspective about the current state of the world. If you’re feeding a gathering of 10 people, a traditional turkey dinner will cost 20 percent more this year, according to an American Farm Bureau Federation survey. To be fair, wages are rising but at a much slower pace so while the survey’s results are real, 20 percent is a bit of an overstatement. Nonetheless, that pinch in your pocketbook is real, and it’s easy to let it spoil Thanksgiving. Our inclination to self-centeredness is partly to blame. We know exactly which rung on the ladder we occupy, and it’s all too easy to look up, see everyone a step or two higher and think we’re at the bottom. Our aspirations for tomorrow can easily lead to resentment today if we spend too much time looking up. We avoid looking down, not out of a feeling of superiority, but fear. Fear our footing isn’t solid enough to prevent slipping down a rung. Angst our only assets are material in nature. Worry our worth is based on ascending. These are universal causes of anxiety and alarm even if they’re only true in our minds. Just as our value isn’t set by a bank account, a meal’s quality isn’t dependent on its price. While accounting can make things look simple and tidy, it’s a poor approach to confine one’s life to a spreadsheet or the balance of a retirement account, especially this year. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to reflect on just how much we take gratitude for granted and how skewed our perspective can become. A day reserved for family and feast is surely a reason to be grateful, but it’s worth acknowledging there’s value in recognizing the obvious and near rather than waiting for some special, unexpected good luck to express appreciation. Is it not worth celebrating the mere fact we’re alive right now? When counting blessings isn’t that the logical place to begin? While not everyone has the opportunity to give thanks for the laughter of cousins playing while the adults cook or have those close conversations around the table after the meal is finished, the fact we’re here at all is notable. The funny thing about recognizing the incredibly simple aspects of life is it has a way of changing your outlook. A week or two from now, no one will recall if the turkey was dry, the mashed potatoes were a little lumpy, who brought what pie or even what everything cost. That’s the hope at least. It’s possible a curmudgeon or two will find their way to a few dinner tables, bringing with them dour assessments of the world and wanting to talk about unseemly topics like politics. Being thankful for life doesn’t mean we’re free from challenges. However, we get to choose how we approach those challenges. Thanksgiving is a good time to focus on all the things big and small we’re grateful for. It should also serve as a reminder to take stock of our gratitude throughout the year. If you start with the simple fact you’re grateful to be alive, you can probably continue counting your blessings until your family’s next feast.

The IFYE Exchange Program was founded after World War II as young Americans perceived the need for greater international understanding and cooperation. &nbsp;

U.S. participants live and work with host families in another country, while youth from abroad live with host families in the United States for an equal amount of time. &nbsp;

The IFYE and the host family learn about each other’s culture by participating in the host family’s daily life, promoting “Peace Through Understanding.”  &nbsp;

Exchanges have continued for nearly 75 years, and more than 4,000 Americans have lived in 116 countries while a similar number of young people from those nations have come to the U.S. &nbsp;

Upon returning home, IFYE participants share their once-in-a-lifetime experiences with thousands of people in their communities, state, and nation.&nbsp;

Eula Mae was a beloved member of the IFYE family and a shining example of how international travel can be life changing. &nbsp;

The Goodfellow family gift was the catalyst for the Kansas IFYE Association to partner with the Kansas 4-H Foundation to create a $25,000 endowed scholarship to support Kansas youth interested in international travel through 4-H programs for many years to come. &nbsp;

Eula Mae Murrey’s junior year at McPherson College, in 1955 was when she made plans to be a part of the Kansas IFYE, formerly known as International Farm Youth Exchange, program to Belgium. &nbsp;

Two weeks before she left her McPherson County home to go on this trip, Don Goodfellow proposed marriage to her. Don Goodfellow&nbsp;was also leaving for one year with the International Voluntary Service (IVS) program in Iraq. &nbsp;

Eula Mae and Don said a hard goodbye at the train station in Salina, Kan. when he left for orientation in Washington, D.C. A few days later, Eula Mae left for her IFYE experience. &nbsp;

There was surprise when Don Goodfellow met her at the Washington, D.C. train station as she was arriving there for her orientation. It turned out&nbsp;his departure to Iraq had been delayed. &nbsp;

These moments set into motion a lifelong commitment to each other and to&nbsp;travel; two things they both thoroughly enjoyed.&nbsp;

As an IFYE, Eula Mae stayed with four different farm families while in Belgium. &nbsp;

Two families spoke French, and two spoke Flemish. Since she took French in college, she was able to communicate well, and thankfully she was a fast learner, as she picked up enough Flemish language to manage.&nbsp;

One of her host families had milk cows, so she enjoyed bottle feeding the calves and helping the host mother make butter and cheese. &nbsp;

According to the letters she sent to Don Goodfellow in Iraq, she never complained about her harsh living conditions, and always had something positive to say.&nbsp;

Eula Mae returned to Kansas in late 1955 and finished her senior year in one semester at McPherson College prior to Don Goodfellow returning home. &nbsp;

The Goodfellows spent one year in Ohio where Don Goodfellow was the farm manager for Heifer International, Inc. &nbsp;

The opportunity arose that they could ride a freightliner boat as a seagoing cowboy was traveling to Germany with heifers to be distributed for the Heifer Project. &nbsp;

They purchased a Volkswagen car in the U.S., but picked it up from the factory in Germany, and put 8,000 miles on it as they toured all over Europe and visited all of Eula Mae’s host families in Belgium.&nbsp;

After their trip, they loaded the car on the freightliner and shipped it to back stateside for their return to Kansas. The Goodfellows&nbsp;drove the car&nbsp;until their family grew out of it.&nbsp;

Eula Mae and Don Goodfellow through the years stayed in contact with someone from each of her host families, since her memorable and life changing IFYE experience in 1955. &nbsp;

Four of the grandchildren from her host families have visited them in Kansas.&nbsp;

All of her life, Eula Mae was a travel enthusiast and planned many family vacations. &nbsp;

Don and Eula Mae Goodfellow attended many national and international IFYE conferences. &nbsp;

They also participated in mission trips, disaster relief cleanups, group tour vacations around the world, and numerous motorcycle excursions. &nbsp;

Eula Mae was an abundance of energy, never met a stranger, loved to travel, and generously practiced hospitality.&nbsp;

Eula Mae passed away on February 10, 2022. &nbsp;

Survivors include her husband, Don Goodfellow of Lyons, Kan.; daughters Kristen Higgens of Beatrice, Neb. and Teresa (Joel) Miller of St. John, Kan.; as well as 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

Generous Donation Made to IFYE Travel Programs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners will decide the township clerk for Grove Township at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, as there was a three-way tie in the election for the post.

"They each got one vote," said Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager. "I couldn't even tell you for sure if they are interested. It's a three-way tie between&nbsp;Jace McKinney, Chris Hanson and Eric Geesling. The board of canvassers decided to draw names out of a hat, so they will just draw the winner."

Those were all write in votes, so the names were provided to Hutch Post spelled as they were by the people writing them in. If the winner was written in by somebody else and does not wish to serve, there is another procedure.

"In Kansas, it's either you get the position, if you decline it, then it's a vacant position," Fager said. "We reach out to the remaining members on the township board, see if they know anybody who is interested and then we have them do a letter of recommendation and then we try and do a letter of interest from the person that they are going to appoint. Then we put all of that documentation into the board of commissioners and then the board of commissioners makes the appointment."

Grove Township is south of Sylvia and north of Turon.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Homeschool Connection and the Oaks Academy of Arts will perform their third White Christmas production December 8, 9, and 10 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall.

101 Area homeschool students will be singing, dancing, playing instruments and doing dramatic scenes.

There will be photo opportunities with the performers and an Oaks Christmas Store and Vendor Village in the Hall, as well.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with the pre-show at 6:30 p.m. and the performance at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

Homeschool students to hold White Christmas performance next month

NEWTON, Kan. —A major milestone for the new Newton Public Library project is on the City Commission agenda for Tuesday. According to City Manager Kelly McElroy, the council will be receiving the plans and specs for the building and setting a date to receive bids. 

The Library Board and the fundraising committee have worked extremely hard over the past two years to meet or exceed their fundraising goals, and they also will give a report on their progress Tuesday.

According to meeting agenda documents, the proposed project builds a new 25,000 square foot library building on the east end of Military Park with a new parking lot on the northwest side of the new building.

Following construction of the new building, the library contents will be moved into the new building and the old building will be demolished. A large turfed open space will be created west of the building for gatherings of all sizes in the park.&nbsp;The new structure will have a drive-up book drop off, glass walled study rooms, large meeting rooms, young adult space with gaming area, separate space for children's book collections &amp; programs, technology areas, family restrooms, outdoor seating space and more.The Campaign Leadership Committee (CLC) volunteered their time to solicit donations. They were led by Angela Becker and Ann Adrian co-chairs of the Committee and Library Director, Cari Cusick. Swanson House, the subconsultant to the Architect, HBM Architects helped guide the group's efforts. The CLC has raised $3,267,454.40 of private funds committed towards the project. Over $1.4M of the funds raised came from foundations/businesses/organizations and $100,000 was donated by North Newton. About $1.8M of the donations were from individuals who support the library project. There are still additional donation requests on the table and the CLC continues to raise more funds to help the library with their funding needs well into the future.Due to the rising construction costs and strong desire to build what is needed, and to provide the community with a public library that can be enjoyed well into the future, the Library Board chose to provide $1.2M in cash toward the project if needed to cover budget shortfalls once final bids are received.
