HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The postal carriers in Hutchinson brought in $209 in monetary donations and 18,500 pounds of food in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday.

That was a lot closer to their pre-COVID numbers, since they were able to put bags in the mailboxes this year. They are up over 5,000 pounds from last year.

Josh Estrella with the food drive says that if you forgot to put your food out before Saturday, they will still pick up all food placed by the mailboxes over the next week.

Early Childhood Transition Task Force to meet Tuesday

BUSHTON, Kan. — The Bushton Pride Committee will host a Karaoke &amp; BBQ Night on Saturday, June 3, at the Bushton Community Center, 301 N. Main Street, Bushton.

Happy Hour, with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase, will begin at 5:00 p.m., the free will donation barbeque meal will be served from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and karaoke will run from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m.

The barbeque meal will feature a choice of brisket or pulled pork and two sides.

Karaoke will be directed by Mike Osburn with Noisy Neighbors Entertainment of Newton.

The event is a fundraiser for the Bushton Pride Committee with proceeds going toward future Committee projects and events.

Bushton committee holding fundraiser

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Recreation Commission announced Friday the hiring of Denice Gilliland as its new Neighborhood Development Manager. She will begin this role on the Hutch Rec leadership team on June 1.

At Hutch Rec, Gilliland will be responsible of the work being done through the Hutchinson Healthy Neighborhood Initiative (HHNI), which works collaboratively with residents, community partners, and service/community organizations. Currently there are seven featured neighborhoods in the HHNI.

Gilliland and Adam Stewart, neighborhood development coordinator, will continue to work in the development and implementation of innovative neighborhood development strategies and programs to encourage and provide opportunities for investments that will create pride in all Hutchinson neighborhoods.

“I am excited to be working directly with the community members and helping neighborhoods dream about what is possible for them in ways that are innovative and new,” Gilliland says.

Gilliland comes to Hutch Rec after working as the Director of Community Impact for the United Way of Reno County and has a diverse background encompassing the business and nonprofit sector. She is a Hutchinson native and a graduate of Bethany College, where she majored in secondary education and political science.

Gilliland is married and the mother of three children. In her free time, she enjoys camping, allergen-friendly cooking, and cheering on her youngest daughter in competitive cheerleading.

Gilliland to join Hutch Rec

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ahead of National Police Week, the <a href="https://www.renogov.org/183/Sheriff">Reno County Sheriff's Office (RNSO)</a> and <a href="https://www.hutchgov.com/214/Police-Department">Hutchinson Police Department (HPD)</a> hosted an Observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day at the Law Enforcement Center in Hutchinson, Kansas on May 12.&nbsp;

National Police Week 2023 begins May 14 and culminates May 20. <a href="https://www.policeweek.org/">Proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962</a>, National Police Week offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

The event was emceed by RNSO Capt. Steve Lutz.&nbsp;

Sheriff Darrian Campbell delivered the opening statement,

"In recognition of National Police Week, we would&nbsp;like to recognize the members of law enforcement, who help protect us and our community. There are more than 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States," Campbell said. "For the year 2022, according to the <a href="https://www.odmp.org/" target="_blank">Officer Down Memorial Page</a>, there were 246 line of&nbsp;duty deaths. The month of May has been dedicated to remembering their legacy, and thanking those who don the badge every day and protect our community. "&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following Campbell, Police Chaplain Adam Wooten led those in attendance in a prayer.&nbsp;

Then Capt. Lutz introduced the guest speaker for the morning, <a href="https://kletc.org/">Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC)</a> Executive Director Darin Beck.&nbsp;

Beck used his time to talk about how law enforcement is changing.&nbsp;

"Society is asking us to change and we are meeting that expectation. I am excited about that. Personally, I think that that's great," Beck said. "When we have periods of change in law enforcement, we emerge better as a profession."

Beck added though he does like some of the ways law enforcement is being encouraged to change.&nbsp;

He placed emphasis on how law enforcement answers to the public via the U.S.' democratic government.&nbsp;

"The power comes from the people," Beck said. "If their power comes from the people, hey, guess what? They get to tell us how we're going to police and are also going to tell us what we're going to police. So the people set the law."

In the changing landscape of police work, Beck said one of the things law enforcement needs to be concerned about is how they execute their actions.&nbsp;

"What we call 'lawful but awful use of force' is changing," Beck said. "We have to be much more concerned now what we do is going to end up on TV, it's going to end up on YouTube, which I think anymore is more popular than TV. It's going to end up in some sort of social media and somebody is going to criticize it and they're going to criticize it harshly."

Beck said law enforcement needs to think about how they can apply force, not only legally, but in a way that the people they represent can support.&nbsp;

He said the complexity of law enforcement is changing, and cited the sudden surge of A.I. apps like ChatGPT chatbot program.&nbsp;

Beck believes eventually criminals will find ways to use A.I. to commit crimes, and that in turn will force law enforcement to change the way they solve crimes.

He also referenced law enforcement featured YouTube videos and television shows like On Patrol: Live as contributors.&nbsp;Beck said people who view police behaving unethical in those forms of media, suddenly demand accountability.&nbsp;

While Beck said he agreed with that, he posed the question, how should law enforcement be held accountable?

"The concern that I have, is that accountability doesn't always mean charge him [law enforcement officer] with murder," Beck said. "It doesn't always mean prosecutors, you have to charge the highest possible charge possible. Sometimes the right solution is fire them, sometimes the right solution is counsel them, sometimes the right solution is retrain them."

Beck added this affects the public's confidence in law enforcement.&nbsp;

"We need to change that, we have to adapt and evolve to a changing time and what we're doing right now isn't cutting it and we need to do better," Beck said.&nbsp;

Beck closed his time by saying there are still good cops in the ranks of law enforcement who are trained to do the job they risk their lives to do.&nbsp;

Some officers have given their lives to their service of public interest.&nbsp;

"I think the worst thing that we could do today as a country, as a community, is forget what it was that they did.&nbsp;Forget that they were the heroes that stood up and were willing to take that risk.&nbsp;Forget that they're what it takes to make our society successful," Beck said. "It takes heroes. It takes them."&nbsp;

A Recognition of Fallen officers followed.&nbsp;

RNSO Capt. Steve Lutz, HPD Capt. Mike Collins, and Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Jason Hoffman took to the podium and remembered the fallen by recalling the details of their individual last watches.

Five officers were individually commemorated, including HPD officer Kenneth Kennedy. Kennedy was killed in 1972 after investigating a restaurant illegally selling liquor.&nbsp;

Upon attempt of arrest, a shootout occurred. Kennedy was killed.

"The section of K-61 that runs through Hutchinson, was named in honor of Officer Kennedy" Collins said. "Officer Kenneth Kennedy. End of watch, September 15, 1972."&nbsp;

Uniformed officers of the RNSO and HPD Honor Guard then came to attention in a Posting of Colors while 'Taps' was played to honor fallen officers.&nbsp;

Closing remarks were delivered by Interim Hutchinson Police Chief Alan Stoecklein.&nbsp;

Stoecklein said it is not just fallen officers who are honored.&nbsp;

"It is also a time to remember the families of these fallen officers, who are sometimes forgotten as time goes by. Even though these family members are proud of their loved ones who do these risks that were accepted by these officers as part of their job," Stoecklein said. "Their lives are never the same after and they must continue on without them."

He commended current officers for acting accordingly in honor of those who came before them. He also asked citizens to remember to thank their officers.&nbsp;

Stoecklein closed the ceremony by recognizing retired officers.&nbsp;

"Thank you for the many years of service to this community," Stoecklein said. "Sometimes, sadly, retirees are forgotten and sometimes pass on with little notice. They are the same people who still hold the same conviction for this job as when they wore the shield. I'm sure some of them work alongside some of these officers we mourn today."

National Police Week will be observed from this Sunday to next Saturday.&nbsp;

Steve Lutz.&nbsp;Sheriff Darrian Campbell delivered the opening statement,"In recognition of National Police Week, we would&nbsp;like to recognize the members of law enforcement, who help protect us and our community. There are more than 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States," Campbell said. "For the year 2022, according to the <a href="https://www.odmp.org/" target="_blank">Officer Down Memorial Page</a>, there were 246 line of&nbsp;duty deaths. The month of May has been dedicated to remembering their legacy, and thanking those who don the badge every day and protect our community. "&nbsp;&nbsp;Following Campbell, Police Chaplain Adam Wooten led those in attendance in a prayer.&nbsp;Then Capt. Lutz introduced the guest speaker for the morning, <a href="https://kletc.org/">Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC)</a> Executive Director Darin Beck.&nbsp;Beck used his time to talk about how law enforcement is changing.&nbsp;"Society is asking us to change and we are meeting that expectation. I am excited about that. Personally, I think that that's great," Beck said. "When we have periods of change in law enforcement, we emerge better as a profession."Beck added though he does like some of the ways law enforcement is being encouraged to change.&nbsp;He placed emphasis on how law enforcement answers to the public via the U.S.' democratic government.&nbsp;"The power comes from the people," Beck said. "If their power comes from the people, hey, guess what? They get to tell us how we're going to police and are also going to tell us what we're going to police. So the people set the law."In the changing landscape of police work, Beck said one of the things law enforcement needs to be concerned about is how they execute their actions.&nbsp;"What we call 'lawful but awful use of force' is changing," Beck said. "We have to be much more concerned now what we do is going to end up on TV, it's going to end up on YouTube, which I think anymore is more popular than TV. It's going to end up in some sort of social media and somebody is going to criticize it and they're going to criticize it harshly."Beck said law enforcement needs to think about how they can apply force, not only legally, but in a way that the people they represent can support.&nbsp; He said the complexity of law enforcement is changing, and cited the sudden surge of A.I. apps like ChatGPT chatbot program.&nbsp;Beck believes eventually criminals will find ways to use A.I. to commit crimes, and that in turn will force law enforcement to change the way they solve crimes.He also referenced law enforcement featured YouTube videos and television shows like On Patrol: Live as contributors.&nbsp;Beck said people who view police behaving unethical in those forms of media, suddenly demand accountability.&nbsp;While Beck said he agreed with that, he posed the question, how should law enforcement be held accountable?"The concern that I have, is that accountability doesn't always mean charge him [law enforcement officer] with murder," Beck said. "It doesn't always mean prosecutors, you have to charge the highest possible charge possible. Sometimes the right solution is fire them, sometimes the right solution is counsel them, sometimes the right solution is retrain them."Beck added this affects the public's confidence in law enforcement.&nbsp;"We need to change that, we have to adapt and evolve to a changing time and what we're doing right now isn't cutting it and we need to do better," Beck said.&nbsp;Beck closed his time by saying there are still good cops in the ranks of law enforcement who are trained to do the job they risk their lives to do.&nbsp;Some officers have given their lives to their service of public interest.&nbsp;"I think the worst thing that we could do today as a country, as a community, is forget what it was that they did.&nbsp;Forget that they were the heroes that stood up and were willing to take that risk.&nbsp;Forget that they're what it takes to make our society successful," Beck said. "It takes heroes. It takes them."&nbsp;A Recognition of Fallen officers followed.&nbsp;RNSO Capt. Steve Lutz, HPD Capt. Mike Collins, and Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Jason Hoffman took to the podium and remembered the fallen by recalling the details of their individual last watches.Five officers were individually commemorated, including HPD officer Kenneth Kennedy. Kennedy was killed in 1972 after investigating a restaurant illegally selling liquor.&nbsp;Upon attempt of arrest, a shootout occurred. Kennedy was killed."The section of K-61 that runs through Hutchinson, was named in honor of Officer Kennedy" Collins said. "Officer Kenneth Kennedy. End of watch, September 15, 1972."&nbsp;Uniformed officers of the RNSO and HPD Honor Guard then came to attention in a Posting of Colors while 'Taps' was played to honor fallen officers.&nbsp;Closing remarks were delivered by Interim Hutchinson Police Chief Alan Stoecklein.&nbsp;Stoecklein said it is not just fallen officers who are honored.&nbsp;"It is also a time to remember the families of these fallen officers, who are sometimes forgotten as time goes by. Even though these family members are proud of their loved ones who do these risks that were accepted by these officers as part of their job," Stoecklein said. "Their lives are never the same after and they must continue on without them."He commended current officers for acting accordingly in honor of those who came before them. He also asked citizens to remember to thank their officers.&nbsp;Stoecklein closed the ceremony by recognizing retired officers.&nbsp;"Thank you for the many years of service to this community," Stoecklein said. "Sometimes, sadly, retirees are forgotten and sometimes pass on with little notice. They are the same people who still hold the same conviction for this job as when they wore the shield. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Department (HPD) revealed on May 12, a Hutchinson man was arrested for charges related to criminal discharge of a firearm on May 11.&nbsp;

At 4:42 p.m. HPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1500 block of west 12th in reference to a white male shooting a firearm three to five times. 

 Once officers arrived on scene, they heard an additional gunshot and established a perimeter.  A short time later a white male emerged from a residence in the direction of the gunshots. 

 The male was detained without incident and was identified as Ryan Rutherford, 50, Hutchinson who resides in that block.

  The investigation revealed that the shots were intentionally fired into the ground and backdrop. Due to initial uncertainty, the HPD Emergency Response team was utilized to clear the residence and evidence was later recovered. 

 Additional evidence on scene suggested that natural gas and water were being distributed to the residence unlawfully. 

 Rutherford was subsequently arrested for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm with the city limits and Theft of services. He was transported to the Reno County Detention Facility to be held on a $1,500 bond.

Rutherford is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Hutchinson man arrested after police investigate gunfire

KINGMAN, Kan. —&nbsp; The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of the City of Kingman public water supply system located in Kingman County. The area affected is south of W Kansas Avenue and north of W Copeland Ave. and west of N Sugar St. and east of NW 10th Ave.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on May 12 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because untreated water from an unauthorized connection may have entered the distribution system.  The untreated water has not been chlorinated and may reduce chlorine residuals and contain bacterial contamination. 

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Portion of Kingman under boil water advisory

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Newton City Commission received an update on the First Street water tank project and approved an amended low-interest loan agreement with the State to account for increased costs.

The existing water tank stores all of Newton’s drinking water before it is pumped to the City’s four elevated water towers. The 3.8 million-gallon tank, which was built in 1939, is now severely deteriorated and must be replaced. The plan is to build one new 1.9 million-gallon tank before demolishing the existing tank and replacing it with a second 1.9 million-gallon tank. This will allow in the future for one tank to be taken down for maintenance and still leave the community with a steady water supply.

Construction on the first tank began in May 2022. The contractor, Preload LLC, was able to remove material and stabilize the base for the tank footings, and testing began on the soils. Although this site had been previously cleaned up by BNSF, as documented by the Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), contaminated soils were found. KDHE stopped the project to determine the extent of the contamination and how the project could proceed. After much review of data, sampling, and design plans, the State has now approved the project moving forward with a few changes to the pipeline plans.

Because the project has sat idle for over 10 months, material and labor costs have increased, causing a change order of about $670,000. The contaminated soil is considered special waste, which must be hauled off-site to an approved landfill, causing a change order of about $900,000.

The State agreed to add the extra costs to the existing loan at its very low interest rate. The new loan amount is $8,347,473 through the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund at a gross interest rate of 1.26% per year.

Construction is expected to resume in September, according to Preload’s current schedule.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;People wanting to conduct an Open Burn or an Agricultural Open Burn in Reno County must obtain a free burn permit for each parcel that they intend to burn.

"We went through all kinds of different iterations of our burn resolution," said Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar. "It was actually adopted by the Board of County Commissioners back in January. We had a whole bunch of professionals in the room that actually came up with that resolution. It got adopted by the commission. Part of that resolution is requiring a burn permit. When we started the burn permit process, we were using a different software and it wasn't quite as user friendly as what we wanted, so we didn't actually require those until now. We're finally to a point with the burn permit software where we think its user friendly and we're ready to roll it out live."

The permit is obtained online at <a href="http://www.renogov.org/controlledburn">www.renogov.org/controlledburn</a>.

Burn permit registration numbers will be required starting Thursday, June 1, 2023.

"On June 1, anytime you need to do any sort of open burning, agricultural burning, including brush piles, not only do you have to call our non emergency dispatch number, but you also have to have a burn permit number ready," Weishaar said. "That means you've got to get on our website, fill out the burn permit application form. You'll immediately get approved. There's no cost to it. There's no real approval process. As long as you fill out your information in there, you're going to get a burn permit."

Small recreational fires or cooking fires do not require a permit. Each permit is valid from the date of issuance to an expiration date of December 31 of the year in which it is issued. The burn permit holder must notify Hutchinson/Reno County Emergency Communications Center 30 minutes prior to a burn by calling the non-emergency phone number 620-694-2800. 

Information that must be provided is name, address, telephone number, permit number(s) and the location, nature and circumstances of the proposed burn. Failure to provide prior notification of the intent to burn constitutes a violation of the resolution and subjects the violator upon conviction to potential penalties.

Out in the county, there's a lot of addresses, there's a lot of farmland that doesn't physically have an address," Weishaar said. "When they call into our dispatch center, they are saying, I'm a quarter mile north of this intersection or I'm a half mile north of this intersection. With our burn permit, they have to actually physically go in and select the parcel they are going to burn, so that also assists response getting out to those areas."

If a person violates the resolution, it can be a Class B misdemeanor up to a $1,000 fine and/or up to 180 days in jail. The previous resolution was a $500 fine and/or 30 days in jail. Dispatchers also are allowed to tell callers if they can burn or not.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;People wanting to conduct an Open Burn or an Agricultural Open Burn in Reno County must obtain a free burn permit for each parcel that they intend to burn."We went through all kinds of different iterations of our burn resolution," said Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar. "It was actually adopted by the Board of County Commissioners back in January. We had a whole bunch of professionals in the room that actually came up with that resolution. It got adopted by the commission. Part of that resolution is requiring a burn permit. When we started the burn permit process, we were using a different software and it wasn't quite as user friendly as what we wanted, so we didn't actually require those until now. We're finally to a point with the burn permit software where we think its user friendly and we're ready to roll it out live."The permit is obtained online at <a href="http://www.renogov.org/controlledburn">www.renogov.org/controlledburn</a>. Burn permit registration numbers will be required starting Thursday, June 1, 2023."On June 1, anytime you need to do any sort of open burning, agricultural burning, including brush piles, not only do you have to call our non emergency dispatch number, but you also have to have a burn permit number ready," Weishaar said. "That means you've got to get on our website, fill out the burn permit application form. You'll immediately get approved. There's no cost to it. There's no real approval process. As long as you fill out your information in there, you're going to get a burn permit."Small recreational fires or cooking fires do not require a permit. Each permit is valid from the date of issuance to an expiration date of December 31 of the year in which it is issued. The burn permit holder must notify Hutchinson/Reno County Emergency Communications Center 30 minutes prior to a burn by calling the non-emergency phone number 620-694-2800. Information that must be provided is name, address, telephone number, permit number(s) and the location, nature and circumstances of the proposed burn. Failure to provide prior notification of the intent to burn constitutes a violation of the resolution and subjects the violator upon conviction to potential penalties.Out in the county, there's a lot of addresses, there's a lot of farmland that doesn't physically have an address," Weishaar said. "When they call into our dispatch center, they are saying, I'm a quarter mile north of this intersection or I'm a half mile north of this intersection. With our burn permit, they have to actually physically go in and select the parcel they are going to burn, so that also assists response getting out to those areas."If a person violates the resolution, it can be a Class B misdemeanor up to a $1,000 fine and/or up to 180 days in jail. The previous resolution was a $500 fine and/or 30 days in jail. Burn permits required in county next month

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission read through potential text amendments to the county's Zoning Regulations regarding commercial solar development at its meeting April 20 and they at least have the text amendment item on their upcoming May 18 agenda.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/f640402b-da32-48a0-8f5f-424bbb343846">The planning commission was given time to work by Reno County Commissioners, as they put a moratorium on such development in place for the rest of 2023 at their meeting on April 11.</a>

No public comment on the regulations was taken at the April 20 meeting, as it took them more than two hours just to read through and discuss the first draft provided by staff and make some initial edits.&nbsp; No public comment on that topic will be taken at the May 18 meeting, either.

County planner Mark Vonachen told the board in April that the decisions they need to make before further editing of the document are on what they choose to regulate and what they choose not to regulate. The goal is to make regulations that are able to be applied whether the proposed project is seven acres or 7000 acres.

The commission will work on another planning case on Thursday. That case is a request by Lawrence Street Properties, LLC for a conditional use permit to establish a commercial warehouse and office space for King Solar on land zoned R-1 Rural Residential District. The property is located at the southwest corner of E. Switzer Road and S. Halstead Street.

Anyone with objections to that specific case can voice those at the meeting, but comments are restricted to only that case.

County Planning Commission to talk solar again

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Monday, May 15, 2023, to discuss proposed solutions to the teacher shortage within the district.&nbsp;

The special meeting will be held at Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy located at 800 15th Circle at 6:00 p.m. There will be time allotted for public participation. 

USD 308’s policy for addressing the board is as follows:

Parents/Guardians and Taxpayers of USD 308 who desire to address the board on any topic related to board work are welcome to do so at this time. Speakers are requested to limit their remarks to not more than 5 minutes, to appoint a spokesperson if the concern is a group concern, and to supplement verbal presentations with written reports, if necessary or desired. 

Public comments critical of an individual are not acceptable. Please note the board will listen to public comment, but will not respond. The board may direct the superintendent to follow up at a later date on questions asked or concerns raised.

 USD 308 explains comment procedure for Monday meeting

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — May is the month in Kansas when the state typically sees its most severe weather, including tornadoes. Kansas Gas Service wants to remind all customers to keep safety in mind before and after a storm.

“Taking steps to protect your natural gas meter is often an afterthought, but it’s important to keep in mind for the safety of yourself and your community, especially during severe weather season,” said Sean Postlethwait, vice president of operations for Kansas Gas Service. “Preparedness is key, and we encourage our customers to join us in taking a few simple steps to plan for any storm.”

Here are some helpful steps to take in preparation for severe weather:

• Check around your natural gas meter and remove any objects that could be blown into the meter by strong winds or pushed into the meter by heavy rain and flooding.

• Remove any branches or other objects above the meter that could fall onto and damage the meter. Safety should always be a priority, even after severe weather. Here are some important things to remember once the storm passes.

• If you smell natural gas, usually described as a “rotten egg” odor, leave the area immediately, then call 911 and Kansas Gas Service at 888-482-4950. Be sure not to operate any electrical appliances, including light switches.

• If you don’t smell natural gas, still do a maintenance check around your home by checking all gas appliances for damage and chimneys and flues for any fallen objects.

• If you need to remove any fallen tree limbs or uncovered debris, contact 811 to locate underground natural gas pipelines and other utility lines if this requires digging.

• If your natural gas meter was turned off or your service was interrupted during the storm, call the Kansas Gas Service customer service line at 800-794-4780 to restore your service. DO NOT attempt to turn your natural gas meter back on.

Prepare for severe weather with simple natural gas safety tips

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month Jennifer Miller, teaching both 4th and 5th grade at Faris Elementary is a challenge, but it has its advantages, too.

"I actually got to keep my students from last year," Miller said. "I taught 4th grade last year and I was able to loop with them and then add some 4th graders in there. It's been really good to have the same students two years in a row, so that I've been able to have those strong relationships with them."

It's been the goal in USD 308 to get teachers back to teaching single grades as much as possible and that is the plan for Miller, too.

"I've taught both 4th and 5th grade as single grades," Miller said. "I like both of them. I've taught 4th grade the longest. I'm going to end up teaching 5th grade next year by itself, so that I can loop with my current 4th graders and have them for one more year, as well."

That second year helps get things started more quickly when you get back to the classroom.

"I do think it makes things easier, because of the relationships that I have with them," Miller said. "I know what works for them and what doesn't work for them. I know what I can use to motivate them and what I can use to kind of get them going. As far as expectation goes, I actually like the fact that they already know what's expected of them."

The moment when a student has a breakthrough on a concept is one of the most rewarding for Miller.

"I truly do love seeing the lightbulb in kids, that moment where they just get it," Miller said. "I also love being able to get kids to the point where they want to learn. I'm a lifelong learner. I love learning new things. I'm constantly trying to read and learn new things. I love igniting that in other kids and being able to see that as they grow up."

Miller was nominated by one of her colleagues, Amanda Beuthe.

HutchCC hosting summer camps

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Historical Society is excited to announce the hiring of a new Executive Director. 

Rachel Kirkhart is a Reno County resident and is looking forward to learning more about the history of Reno County and salt mining. She will take direction from the Reno County Historical Society’s 15 member board and will oversee both the Reno County Museum and Strataca, the Underground Salt Museum. &nbsp;

Kirkhart is eager to push both museums to their full potential and to connect with the communities of Reno County.

The Reno County Historical Society would like to invite the public to the Reno County Museum at 100 S. Walnut in Hutchinson to come to meet our new director during their events on May 18th, Third Thursday and International Museum Day!

Kirkhart will be available to meet the public from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 18.

In celebration of International Museum Day, the museum is pulling back the curtains and letting you see the museum's backrooms. This is your opportunity to see some items that have never been displayed. There will be tours at the hour every hour all day. The Hutchinson Kennel Club is holding a Responsible Dog Owner Day in the courtyard from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This includes getting information from members of the club on being a good dog owner and answering questions, a free Canine Good Citizen Evaluation ($15 value), and a $15 drive-up chip clinic (limited to 25 dogs). 

There will also be a breed parade at 6:00 p.m. for the public to meet different dog breeds in a stress-free way. The club is also bringing therapy dogs for the public to meet and love.

She will take direction from the Reno County Historical Society’s 15 member board and will oversee both the Reno County Museum and Strataca, the Underground Salt Museum. &nbsp;Kirkhart is eager to push both museums to their full potential and to connect with the communities of Reno County.The Reno County Historical Society would like to invite the public to the Reno County Museum at 100 S. Walnut in Hutchinson to come to meet our new director during their events on May 18th, Third Thursday and International Museum Day!Kirkhart will be available to meet the public from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 18.In celebration of International Museum Day, the museum is pulling back the curtains and letting you see the museum's backrooms. This is your opportunity to see some items that have never been displayed. There will be tours at the hour every hour all day. We are charging $5 a person as we are fundraising to update the main gallery.Call (620) 662-1184 to sign up for a tour time. The tour size is limited to 6 at a time.The Hutchinson Kennel Club is holding a Responsible Dog Owner Day in the courtyard from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This includes getting information from members of the club on being a good dog owner and answering questions, a free Canine Good Citizen Evaluation ($15 value), and a $15 drive-up chip clinic (limited to 25 dogs). There will also be a breed parade at 6:00 p.m. for the public to meet different dog breeds in a stress-free way. The club is also bringing therapy dogs for the public to meet and love.
