HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson said Tuesday that the crisis in lack of teachers was the reason that the decision to close Lincoln Elementary and combine with McCandless was made.

"We're still sitting at 18 vacancies in elementary education," Johnson said. "We have others in the middle schools and the high school, but 18 in the elementary. The last week of April, mid-April, we started saying we really have to start making some decisions. We got elementary principals together, had conversations with them. Maybe in a previous district, some of our principals ran areas the size of around 500. Most of ours were right around 200 to 250. We started talking about the possibility of combining them. McCandless is a larger school that can hold up to 400 as a three track school. We started taking a look at, if we converge on McCandless, how do we take the schools in those proximities and see what we could do. We took a look at Faris and we took a look at Lincoln and created some criteria to make sure that we were staying true to solving the teacher shortage."

Ultimately, in order to keep the entire schools of students together, the way the math worked best was closing Lincoln.&nbsp;

"All of the students at Faris wouldn't fit over into McCandless," Johnson said. "We'd have sixth graders out there by themselves. We could make K-5 move, we just couldn't make K-6 move. What were we going to do with those sixth graders? We just continued to run different models and work with Schaffer, our architecture company that's working with us. The fit for the number of students in the space we had, it just made the most sense for Lincoln to move up."

Current Lincoln principal Paul Carver, who will be the combined building principal next year, talked about the emotional impact of closing a school where generations have attended.

"The biggest thing is the emotional impact right now," Carver said. "That became really apparent. As the new principal here in town, I was talking to families who their grandparents went to Lincoln. I've seen pictures of Lincoln as it evolved from its original structure. I think it's important to acknowledge and appreciate the history and the idea that Lincoln is a special and unique place. I don't think we can devalue that. An important first step of that is to acknowledge the challenge that this will place on families. Part of that is just being there with them. I think that's a really good skillset that our Lincoln staff and families have is that ability to work together and really process those things. At the end, I think we're just mutually supportive of each other and that's what's going to keep us aloft."

Also, in order to make the numbers work, the students that were going to be shifted from Graber to McCandless will now stay as Graber students going forward.

Decision to close Lincoln result of teacher shortage, not about facility itself

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — May 16 is election day for bond issues in Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 and Pretty Prairie USD 311. 

For the USD 309 election, voters residing in&nbsp;Enterprise Township, Huntsville Township, Medford Township, Nickerson Wards 1, 2 &amp; 3, &amp; Walnut Township will vote at the&nbsp;Nickerson Community Center at&nbsp;11 N. Nickerson in Nickerson, KS.

Grant Township, Reno North Township &amp; Rice County voters within USD 309 will vote at Mitchell United Methodist at 5512 N. Pennington Rd. in Hutchinson, KS.

Precincts 10, 29, 30 &amp; Salt Creek Township will vote at the&nbsp; USD 309 Administration Building at 4501 W. 4th Ave. in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp;

According to Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager, a little over 50 ballots had been cast in each election in advance voting, which ended at noon on Monday.&nbsp;

The canvass for the two elections is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 23 at the Reno County Annex.

Waggoner holding events in Buhler, Inman

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; ATWOODS Ranch &amp; Home Goods has announced the grand opening of its new store in Hutchinson, with grand opening events slated for Wednesday, May 17th through Sunday, May 21st. 

Doors open at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the 17th.

ATWOODS has been serving homeowners, ranchers, and hobby farmers for the past 63 years.

Grand Opening events include a 5-day sale, giveaway items, free popcorn, and daily deals Wednesday through Saturday.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education passed a motion 5-1 on Monday at a special meeting to combine Lincoln and McCandless Elementary schools and to return Graber to the boundaries used in the 2022-23 school year.

This decision did not come easily and staff will have to combine their resources into the McCandless building and all staff from both buildings will work at the combined building. No one will lose their job.

The reason they are bringing Lincoln students to McCandless is because McCandless has the most classrooms, so the combined school will have three sections of each grade K-6.

USD 308 will combine Lincoln and McCandless Elementary

RAY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges after a weekend chase and crash.

On Saturday night, a sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a stolen vehicle at 13 Highway and D Highway east of Kansas City, according to Sheriff Scott Childers.

 A pursuit ensued and the vehicle crashed out in a field. After a foot chase two suspects, one from Hutchinson and another from Jackson County were apprehended.&nbsp;

Deputies recovered methamphetamine at the scene and both suspects were wanted on warrants outside of Ray County, according to the sheriff's office.&nbsp; Names of the suspects have not been released.

 Suspect from Hutch jailed after chase, crash in stolen vehicle

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson is optimistic about the vote Tuesday for the school district's bond issue.

"It is a total bond of $7.7 million," Anderson said. "At the elementary school, the list is secure entrances, new roof, new windows. For the middle school, it's secure entrances, new roof, new windows, repairing the auditorium ceiling and then remodeling space that we currently have for a new gym space. We would add on about 6300 square feet to complete this gym remodel. That would replace our current competition gym. Then, at the high school, it would be secure entrances, a new roof, new windows, we would do a breezeway to connect the middle school and the high school. We would focus on our ag shop ventilation and electrical upgrades, as well as, our high school science lab would get electrical and ventilation and gas repairs."

The increase to the mill levy is significant.

"It's an 18 mill increase," Anderson said. "On a $50,000, a monthly increase of $8.63, on a $100,000 home, it's a monthly increase of $17.25. Commercial property valued at $100,000, it would be a monthly increase of $37.50. On ag property, we worked with Stifel out of Wichita. They came in and projected an annual increase per one acre of native grass would be 24 cents. The projected annual increase per one acre of dryland farmland is $1.38 and projected annual increase per one acre of irrigated farmland is $3.59."

This is the second try for Pretty Prairie on a bond in less than a year. A $10.4 million bond was defeated last fall. Anderson is hoping they have changed some minds in the interim.

"This past week, our local newspaper came out," Anderson said. "There were, I think, eight letters to the editor in support of the bond issue. I feel like, you know, things are a lot more positive this time around than last time. I don't know if that's enough positivity to pass it, but definitely, more people vocalizing that they want to support the school. That's a good thing."

The September bond was voted down 277-212.

Anderson is optimistic going into Tuesday bond vote

KINGMAN, Kan. —&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Kingman public water supply system located in Kingman County. 

The advisory was issued May 12 because of untreated water from an unauthorized connection potentially entering the distribution system.&nbsp;

The area that had been under the advisory was south of W Kansas Avenue and north of W Copeland Ave. and west of N Sugar St. and east of NW 10th Ave.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Kingman indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil water advisory lifted for Kingman

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Animal Shelter held a successful Adopt-A-Pet event at the Eagle Media Park on Saturday.&nbsp;

The shelter was able to adopt out 13 dogs during the event.

Jason Younger at Daylight Donuts helped pay the adoption fee for three of the 13 adoptions.

CSA enrolling for 2023-2024

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The public hearing for the City of Hutchinson's application for $350,000 from the Kansas Public Water Supply Loan Fund is scheduled for Tuesday.

This project, if approved, will develop a water service line inventory and water service replacement plan as required by the new lead and copper rule revisions. 

Tasks would include, but not be limited to:

Data review of historical records to assist in identifying service line material, strategic field verification of service lines, GIS/Webpage development, a public notification campaign, the completion of KDHE service line inventory spreadsheet and the development of a water service replacement plan.

"We have some water lines, I think, that are nearing the century mark, if not past that," said Mayor Jon Richardson. "Being on a regular maintenance and replacement schedule is important, as exciting as that topic sounds."

The loan has a 20 year repayment and would identify which, if any, of the city's in service lines contain lead or copper.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

Public hearing for state water funds Tuesday

I am proud to officially be a Kansas State Wildcat. This past weekend, I walked across the stage in Bramlage Coliseum to receive my master’s degree and an official place in the K-State family. When I moved to Kansas more than a decade ago, I felt pretty confident in my assumptions of what life would be like. Life in the Midwest meant a little slower pace, friendlier people, simpler lifestyles and more of the values of my childhood. One thing I wasn’t prepared for (other than the wind) was the K-State family. Other universities have fans but in Kansas, it isn’t just a team you cheer for. K-State is the heartbeat of the agriculture community, a respected source of information and innovation, a family of fans committed to showing up and supporting the team and each other even when it isn’t convenient, a legacy and source of pride passed down through generations in families all across the state. At graduation, a representative of the alumni association spoke briefly about what it means to become an alumna. The part that caught my attention was that the association considers purple a core value. This was new to me intellectually, but I instantly understood it in my heart. Purple is friendliness and comradery. Walking through the purple sea of tailgates in the stadium parking lot before a football game, you will see old friends and make new ones. All over the world, the K-state family is recognizable by a shirt or hat and we never miss a chance to say hello. This has literally happened to me on every international trip since I moved to Kansas. Purple is the outward symbol of the pride we all have for this amazing network of people and the better way of life that comes from being a part of the family. Since I didn’t grow up here, I didn’t have this understanding and appreciation from the start. Years ago when I began my master’s program, I considered both Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Both programs seemed equally respected, had similar courses and tuition and were about the same distance from my home. The distance really didn’t matter since all my classes would be online, but I liked the idea of having the option to interact with the school in person. My eventual decision to attend K-State ended up coming down to an unexpected argument about value. Marc and his college friends have had season tickets since graduating because that is what K-Staters do. A seat was added to the pack for me shortly after I moved here. As season ticket holders, we support the school and students through the Ahearn Fund contribution. I remember thinking if we are going to give money to a school for the rest of our lives, I might as well get some benefit from it. In the years since starting the master’s program, my appreciation has grown and purple has bled into my life and view of the world. I have gained knowledge through classes and extension programing. I have made friends and industry connections expanding my experiences and challenging my understanding of the world. My ownership and pride in the institution has grown with all of the benefits not only to myself but to the communities that I care about. Now that I am officially a wildcat, Kansas feels even more like a home and I am confident in my place in this purple family that I will be thankful for the rest of my life. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair is thrilled to announce that renowned hip-hop/rap legend Ja Rule will perform with popular DJ Disco Lines Saturday, September 16 at 7:30 p.m. The event promises to be a spectacular show, showcasing the very best of hip hop music. &nbsp;

Ja Rule with Disco Lines Set to Perform at Kansas State Fair September 16​

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will have specifics on the demolition of the 20th and Main fire station on the consent agenda for approval on Tuesday.&nbsp;

There was some initial discussion of leaving the station intact and using it for other purposes for the fair, but it turned out that making it useful for those purposes wasn't going to work, so the agreement to be ratified by the council says that the structures are to be demolished, the concrete pad is to be removed and the area where the building was be returned to grass.

The fair does want to keep the driveway approaches, apron area and roadway as much as possible. The gas and water lines servicing the 20th and Main location will be capped. The fair also wants to keep the existing fence line.

Demolition of 20th and Main fire station on city agenda

KINGMAN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a series of incidents of vandalism in the city of Kingman have made an arrest.

The vandalism included breaking shop windows, other glass items and damaging merchandise, and it occurred early Saturday, according to a social media report from the city.

Cleo's Flower Shop, 229 North Main is one of over a dozen businesses damaged downtown and along U.S. 54, according to a social media statement from the business.

According to online jail records, 37-year-old Carl Sowers was booked into the Kingman County jail just before 6 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities have not indicated what charges he may face.

BUHLER — Buhler's City Wide Garage Sale is coming up this Saturday, May 20th, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Buhler City Wide Garage Sale is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — John Wilson with Kansas Action for Children acknowledges that the childcare capacity problem is a statewide one and that those who regulate need to make some adjustments, even though Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed legislation this past session that would have reduced some regulations.

"The state Department of Health and Environment is actually in the midst of a comprehensive regulation review," Wilson said. "That is going to look at a lot of the things that came up during this legislative session. They are going to propose these changes. It could be that, by this fall, we'll have a whole suite of regulations that could be tweaked to address concerns that were brought up by providers during the session. I think that's the first piece. Regulations obviously have to be a part of it. We have to make sure they are modernized and keep up with the profession."

Another piece is having physical spaces for childcare centers.

"Thankfully, there is an opportunity from the Kansas Children's Cabinet and trust fund through their accelerator program to actually fund building childcare, building the infrastructure and building spaces. That's a really great opportunity."

It's also important to let the process play out, but not to wait too long to get something accomplished.

"The state has a budget surplus right now," Wilson said. "I think it's important for the state to invest some of that surplus into childcare. What better time to do it then after this task force comes up with recommendations to strengthen the system and hopefully have a single state agency, so that we have the right programs and systems and structures to then invest money into?"

The next meeting of the task force is Tuesday.

Date set for SW Bricktown Fiesta

NEWTON, Kan. — The physical work for the expansion of Ideatek's network in Newton is coming later this month.

The project <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/42e6ada6-7987-418d-a08b-305f05f95d65">was announced in April</a>, but according to updated information from the City of Newton released last week, IdeaTek expects to begin work in the next two to three weeks on expansion of their fiber network in Newton.

They plan to begin in the area west of Main and south of 12th Street, placing main lines underground and overhead in the public right-of-way. This means they may be accessing residents’ front yards, backyards and alleyways. 

They anticipate running 1,000-3,500 feet per week. A letter from IdeaTek is going out to the affected areas, and they will provide door hangers at least two days prior to the work.

IdeaTek has currently built fiber infrastructure in the nearby Harvey County communities of Hesston and Halstead and has also built fiber to many of Newton’s business districts, serving Newton city buildings and local businesses with internet and phone since 2021.

IdeaTek's latest investment in Newton is set to inject approximately $12 million into the local economy, connecting 9,000 homes and businesses to fiber internet.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Bond Issue election day is Tuesday.

The proposal is a 9 year, $7.6 million bond. According to the district's <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vTNcvr5J1EibnPbbMRbWCDZ8nZqtoYv9r8RqMp0Y_3qxsKuwpRGgngN_OWw0-IXAL0qoQCM5bbrn9yg/pub">bond project FAQ</a>, there are several items to address.

"Quite a few roofing projects need to take place," said USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale. "There are district wide student safety measures. That includes putting a 3M coating on all of the exterior glass doors for all student attendance centers and then creating secured vestibules inside each one of the buildings, so once someone is buzzed into the building, there's kind of a checkpoint there at the office, before they can go into the rest of the building."

In addition, there are specific projects at Nickerson High for the auditorium, at each of the schools to upgrade restrooms for ADA compliance and construction of two new classrooms at South Hutchinson Elementary.&nbsp;

The bond, if approved, would cost an additional $9.99 per month on a $100,000 home. As a smaller bond, Nightingale is hoping that will help with interest.

"I've seen one that was close to us, in terms of it was about an $8 million bond. I think that one sold at about 3.75% interest," Nightingale said. "I did see one sold last week, it was a little bit more than ours, I want to say it was a $16 or $18 million bond. It sold at 3.25%. That was on a 20 year term. I'm being told that the shorter your term, the better interest rate you're going to get, so I'm hoping to come in at a pretty low interest rate, should it pass."

The USD 309 school board looked at lots of options before coming to the final bond scope.

"Those few people that I have spoken to that have been negative about it, it's a wide band of excuse, but none of it has been related to the types of things we're wanting to spend money on," Nightingale said. "It's more related to a philosophy about never voting for tax increases or those types of things, but it's not been related to, we feel like you're being frivolous in this bond or I can't support that particular item being done. I think we've done a good job of trying to get that piece covered. At the end, it's going to come down to what the voters are comfortable doing."

USD 309 bond has limited scope

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jon Austin, DVM, with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital, explained that the veterinary tranquilizer Xylazine that is now being found mixed with fentanyl in some human overdose cases has long been in use in practice on animals.

"It's a medication that's been around a long time," Austin said. "It's very, very helpful and has a good purpose in veterinary medicine. It's used both in large animal and in small animal, for longer term injectable&nbsp;anesthesia. It's put in combination with other medications to make it an anesthetic. It acts more as a tranquilizer or sedative by itself. It's a very potent drug. Its effect is long lasting."

It's especially important for large animals like cows and horses when you can't take an operating room out to the pasture.

"A small amount of it in a needle will put a 1500 pound animal on their heels for long enough to do surgery procedures," Austin said. "I use it frequently in combination with another one called ketamine to do painful surgeries on cats. They will sleep an hour through an active surgery procedure and then they will be groggy and with good pain relief, good analgesia and sedation for five or six more hours."

Austin's concern is the off label usage of the drug by humans may eventually make it unavailable to vets.

"Then, we're left without something to give that kind of help to us for procedures and things we need to do on our pets. I cannot imagine what recreational purpose someone might have for that medication, unless being unconscious and knocked out for hours is what they are looking for. I don't know.
