HUTCHINSON, Kan. — What if what you had in your closet led to a superstar television appearance? 

Jamar and Anna Crable of Hutchinson are experiencing that on A&amp;E for WWE’s Most Wanted Treasures on May 28.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We had WWE come out and they filmed the show called WWE's Most Wanted Treasures,” Jamar Crable said.&nbsp; “It's a series that kicked off last year and we were part of season two. We filmed that in the wintertime, and they'll be airing this Sunday on the A&amp;E network.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to <a href="https://www.aetv.com/shows/wwes-most-wanted-treasures">the A&amp;E website</a>, the purpose is to show off old WWE memorabilia.

“Basically, they go out and try to locate just ring-use stuff, like attire or certain thing that a wrestler might have used back when they were wrestling legends,” Jamar Crable said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Crable wants everyone to watch Sunday to find out the item that the show is about.

"We had an item that belonged to Bill Goldberg," Crable said. "We had a specific item of his. We met him last year at WrestleMania. I took this item for him to sign. He was like, are you kidding me? You have these? I don't have these anymore."

Goldberg offered to buy the item off of Crable at the meeting, but he declined.&nbsp; A producer with the A&amp;E show then gave Crable a call and they put a room together of their memorabilia for the taping last winter. Goldberg and Mick Foley came to see the room while the show was being produced.

"It was the most mind-blowing experience to have people that you only see on TV, then all of a sudden are at your front door," said Anna Crable. "It was interesting but really cool to have them in our house and in our own space."

The show will air at 8 p.m. Central Sunday on A&amp;E and be available for streaming the next day.

WWE memorabilia gets Hutch family on TV

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Eagle Communications named Matt Althouse the next market manager of EAGLE Media in Hutchinson. Althouse will replace Nancy Swain, who is retiring from EAGLE at the end of 2023. 

Althouse has worked with EAGLE in Great Bend since 2009 and has been Great Bend's market manager since August of 2021. EAGLE is searching for his Great Bend replacement at this time. Before taking the top spot in Great Bend, Althouse was operations manager.&nbsp;

Hutch Rec announces Smallville Superhero Obstacle Course

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council held a special meeting Friday afternoon to approve the Interim Services Agreement with Mary Grace Clements for the vacant City Manager position.

"I welcome the opportunity to work here alongside such dedicated employees, the hard-working employees of the city," Clements said. "My intent is to lead them with integrity and fairness and honesty and transparency. I feel that, if we work in unison each and every day, that we're going to strive to make Hutchinson a better place for every individual in this community. I thank you for the opportunity. I look forward to just doing what I can to help move things forward and to make sure that we set it up for the next City Manager and I welcome questions and I'm really honored to be here today. Thank you so much."

According to<a href="https://hutchcf.org/hutchinson-community-foundation-welcomes-new-board-members/">&nbsp;information from Clements appointment to the Hutchinson Community Foundation Board</a>, Clements is a former&nbsp;executive director of the Reno County Historical Society from 2016 to 2018.

She previously served as the chair of the Travel and Tourism Advisory Committee and Market Hutch board.

"I have a lot of respect for each and every one of you," Clements told the council. "I have a lot of respect and compassion for this community. I feel that it's an important time and I'm excited for the work and I'm excited, because I think we have lots of talent here. I just want to help in any way I can."

Before coming to the museum, Clements spent a long career in the airline industry, her last post in that industry was at Allegiant Air, where she was vice president of inflight services and vice president of customer operations.

She was also director of inflight services at Pace and Midway airlines.

According to the agreement, interim services provided by Clements shall commence on May 30, 2023 for a period of two (2) weeks.

The Interim Services Agreement shall continue on a bi-weekly to bi-weekly basis; and said Agreement may be terminated by either party for any reason upon fourteen (14) calendar days written notice to the other party.

In return for the interim services provided under the Agreement, City agrees to pay Employee an amount not to exceed Six Thousand Seven Hundred Thirty Dollars and Seventy-seven Cents ($6,730.77) per bi-weekly pay period, prorated, if less than a full pay period of services is provided.

Said compensation shall be payable in installments at such intervals as other City employees are paid. Employee shall only be eligible for such other benefits as are required by law. Employee shall also receive a cell phone allowance of no more than Fifty Dollars ($50.00) bi-weekly.

LYON COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just after 11:30a.m. Friday in Lyon County.

Deputies were dispatched to the 100 Block of Road U in Lyon County for a bicycle accident involving one rider, according to Deputy Chuck Moore. First responders found 82-year-old Michael Welch of McPherson, unresponsive.&nbsp; CPR was started and he was declared deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

The sheriff's office said Welch was traveling downhill and entered a ditch. He was participating in the <a href="https://www.unboundgravel.com/about/">Unbound Gravel event </a>in Lyon County. There were no other vehicles involved.

McPherson man dies in bicycle accident

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30 a.m. Friday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Kia Sportage driven by Teresa Woker, 47, Park City, was southbound on 27th Avenue at U.S. 56 in the city of Canton.

The driver failed to&nbsp;yield the right of way to an eastbound 2012 Freightliner semi driven by Lori Augustine, 60, Glen Elder.

The semi&nbsp;struck the Kia on the passenger side. EMS transported Woker to the hospital in McPherson. Augustine was not injured. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

Kansas woman hospitalized after semi, SUV crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Salt City Splash will have a delayed opening due to mechanical issues at the 23-year-old aquatic center. The Splash was scheduled to open on Saturday, May 27 for the 2023 season; however, will now open on Saturday, June 3.

The Summer 2023 public swim hours include:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: Open 12:30-6:30 p.m.

Saturdays &amp; Sundays: Open 12:30-6:30 p.m.

While the Splash will not be open for public swim on Mondays, it will be open for youth swim team and other programming.

Salt City Splash to delay opening due to mechanical issues

MCPHERSON, Kan. — Thursday evening, May 25, the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale (KMRS) held its Annual Meeting at First Mennonite Church of McPherson. 

This year’s theme was “Walking with Jesus…. spreading the love of God around the World”. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of $610,000 to the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Central States Office.

MCC is a global, not-for-profit organization representing 15 Mennonite, Brethren in Christ, and Amish bodies in North America focused on responding to humanitarian crises through direct relief, development, and peacebuilding activities.

For the past 54 years, each April, the various Mennonite and Anabaptist churches in Kansas have come together to hold a Relief Sale to support the work of MCC. This event continues to be the 2nd largest event held on the State Fair Grounds in Hutchinson, with an estimated two-day attendance of 20,000. The event includes multiple auctions, including a Quilt Auction, General Auction, Silent Auction, and many other booths and food options.

KMRS Board Chair Jim Robb commented, “The Sale was a success in many ways. Of course, we are thrilled with the generosity that will help support the critical work of MCC worldwide. We also recognize the gift of community and the value of so many churches and volunteers coming together to support a cause bigger than ourselves.”

KMRS raises $610,000 from April sale

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United States Supreme Court's 9-0 decision in Sackett v. EPA handed down Thursday, May 25 is seen as an important check on federal administrative power for farmers and ranchers. It also may be a bellwether to the court's upcoming reduction in deference to the executive branch more generally. 

The EPA's rule, as it was written at the time of the Sackett lawsuit, basically tried to regulate every drop of rain that falls in the United States, whether or not a flower grows.

"Everybody is for clean water," said Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann. "What happened is the Obama administration rolled out all these regulations, Trump rolled them back, Biden has now rolled them back forward. That would give the federal government the ability to regulate farm ponds, drainage ditches, way beyond the scope and the purview of what the Clean Water Act ought to be."

According to Professor of Agricultural Law and Taxation at Washburn University School of Law, Roger McEowen, those regulations will no longer be in effect.

"The court unanimously, that's the key point, this was 9-0, voted to reject what's known as the significant nexus test," McEowen said. "That's the multifactored test for determining whether some isolated wetland is sufficiently connected to a navigable water of the United States such that it brings the federal government's jurisdiction over that isolated wetland."

A different test will now be applied, as a 5-4 majority of the court agreed to narrow the WOTUS definition significantly.&nbsp;

"The Clean Water Act's use of waters encompasses only those currently permanent, standing or continuously flowing bodies of water forming geographical features that are described in ordinary parlance as streams, oceans, rivers and lakes," McEowen quoted from the opinion. "That is the key quote of the court. It does not mean a dry stream bed in western Kansas. It does not mean a private pond. It does not mean a ditch that sometimes has water in it. That's how big this is."

It also is a potential signal that regulations may be further curtailed by the court in the future.

"The Supreme Court in this case, did not defer to the agency, the EPA," said Lumen "Lou" Mulligan, who will take his post as the Dean of the&nbsp;UMKC School of Law in July. "There's a long line of cases going back to the 1980s, this case called Chevron, where the Supreme Court has been deferring to an agency. Hey, this particular bit of language in the statute may be vague. Agency, what do you think? So long as its reasonable, we defer to you. That's been the law for about forty-some years in the United States."

There is a case due to come before the&nbsp;United States Supreme Court in its next term called&nbsp;Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimando that could allow the Court to further weaken or eliminate Chevron deference. 

"This is a great case, not only for private property rights, but, in tune, because it's a great case for private property rights, it's a good case for the Constitution," McEowen said. "The Court is saying, we're not going to let some other type of agency write the rules. Under the Constitution, the Congress is responsible for that. What the agencies did goes way beyond what we think Congress intended. What they are saying is Congress, if you don't like the opinion, rewrite your statute, but we're not going to let the agencies do all this stuff."

Though Mulligan isn't ready to specifically predict what the court's rationale might be because they haven't heard Loper Bright yet, he can see where this may be going.

"Certainly, the Sackett case lays a brick in a wall separating agency action from deference," Mulligan said. "We'll have to see which way this goes. You can imagine the opinion already...just last year, we refused to defer to the EPA's understanding of Waters of the United States and took on a fresh look at it from our own point of view...we're going to do it again more generally. You can see this laying that groundwork."

Mann sees the Sackett decision as supportive of actions his office has tried to make in Congress.

"It's about local control," Congressman Mann said. "By the way, our ag producers, farmers and ranchers, they are the world's original conservationists. They don't want and will not do things that are detrimental to their farming practices, caring for their land and being good stewards."

The federal narrowing of the rule doesn't mean local and state jurisdictions won't regulate something if they believe it is needed, though.

"This doesn't deal with anything the states might do," McEowen said. "State and local governments, keep in mind, they began regulating wetlands before the EPA and the Army Corps did, well before 1972. Many are going to continue to do so. This gets the federal government out of landowners hair, which is a good deal. It's a lot easier to deal with state and local people than it is to deal with the feds."

McEowen added that this is a fight that the EPA didn't have to pick in the first place.&nbsp;

"This case never had to occur," McEowen said. "We might not have ever gotten this result had the EPA not been so&nbsp;belligerent with the Sacketts. They backed the Sacketts into a corner and the Sacketts had absolutely no option but to go to court. The fines were stacking up. They were well over $1 million in fine. You have no choice. You can't pay that. You have no choice but to fight it in court. I would say this, the EPA brought all of this upon themselves."

It remains to be seen how the Biden administration might rewrite water regulations going forward.

SCOTUS limits WOTUS: Water much clearer for farmers and ranchers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department is proud to announce the completion of Fire Station 1, 2222 North Main Street. 

Local contractor, Wiens and Company, has completed majority of the construction of the new 5.3-million-dollar fire station. They will complete a few items in the upcoming week, with the department taking possession on June 5th. 

The public will see fire department vehicles in and out after that, moving items and getting the station prepared to open. The fire department will officially begin operating out of the new fire station at 8:00 a.m. on June 15, 2023. 

The press and public are invited to join the Hutchinson Fire Department on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Hutch Fire will have an open house following the ribbon cutting ceremony until 8:00 p.m. 

For those of you who are not able to attend that day, there will be an additional open house on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The opening of Fire Station 1’s new facility is a continuation of an important partnership with the Kansas State Fair. 

The new facility replaces a 1950’s building that was converted to a fire station. The new facility is focused on decreasing the risk of cancer for fire fighters by incorporating separate gear storage and decontamination areas to clean contaminated gear and equipment, keeping it away from the living area of the fire fighters while they are on duty. 

Please join the Hutchinson Fire Department for the opening of this important piece of infrastructure, that will serve the&nbsp; community for years to come. Tour the new facility, talk with firefighters, and enjoy some light refreshments with the entire family.

Open house for new fire station is June 15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;James Fisher with the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation explained that a&nbsp;$450,000 SPRINT grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce will help with two projects that his office has been raising money for.

"The projects that we're working on are the Capper project, which includes the complete rebuild of the House of Capper," Fisher said. "Right next to the Capper is a building we call the Fountain House, right next to the interactive splash park on the Fairgrounds."

The hope is to finish the funding for the House of Capper with a portion of this grant.

"We are still waiting on the paperwork to get back from the Department of Commerce and the grants managers there to find exactly how they've divided those funds for us to spend on which project," Fisher said. "We don't really know how much we need yet for each of the two projects. The Capper project is almost done."

The Capper Project is a tribute to the work of Arthur Capper in rebuilding the structure to its original state and to develop and build the Capper Cooperative Park to celebrate the Capper-Volstead Act of 1922, which allowed for the creation of cooperatives in the United States. The Fountain House project is designed to give another year-round space to use on the Fairgrounds.

"The Fountain House is what we're calling a part of our TAG 2023 program, which we'll feature this fall into the State Fair," Fisher said. "That's Together Achieving Greatness. We want to achieve greatness on the Kansas State Fairgrounds for our state and our community here in Hutchinson and Reno County and the surrounding areas, to help bring more people here."

The estimated final cost of the Capper project is about $1.1 million and they hope to get the Fountain House done for $750,000.

WASHINGTON —The ESOP Association represents the interests of millions of Employee Owners and their companies across the nation.&nbsp;

On May 18, the organization honored Eagle Communications Chairman Gary Shorman for a career spent helping to grow employee ownership in America, with the Michael Keeling Founder’s Award.&nbsp;

The award honors an individual for their contributions to the founding of Employee Stock Ownership Programs (ESOP) and for working to elevate awareness of the benefit and value of ESOPs.&nbsp;Eagle Communications has been an employee-owned company since 1998 with employees now owning 100 percent of the company.

The award was presented at the organization's Annual Awards Ceremony during The ESOP Association’s National Conference in Washington, DC.&nbsp;

The Founder's award was created upon Michael Keeling's retirement from The ESOP Association after 28 years as President. The organization only presented this award one other time, and that was to the founder himself.

"Shorman has set a lifelong example we can all be inspired by," the ESOP Association stated. “Shorman has been a passionate advocate while serving on the organization's Board of Directors, and worked to create the organization's Silver Tsunami video series to encourage ESOP formation."&nbsp;

"It has been an honor to serve the ESOP association and be recognized with this award," said Shorman. "Helping build the Eagle ESOP and being a champion for employee owned companies has been rewarding. Employee ownership creates a unique business environment where everyone shares in the success and shares in the growth of their company."

"Shorman also chaired the organization's search committee for the first leadership transition at TEA in nearly three decades. He chaired the Association during COVID, led the way as we modernized our Board governance procedures, and has helped direct more than one hundred thousand dollars to the Employee Ownership Foundation."

"Any one of these things would be worthy of recognition, but together they exemplify a special dedication to ESOPs and future ESOP formation."

The annual awards honor excellence and achievement in the ESOP community and the people and companies that make significant contributions to The ESOP Association’s cause and membership.

Training will consist of leaders across the state working in the minority space lending their expertise with an equity focus through entrepreneurship, social, cultural, and financial progression and healthy partnerships to activate ecosystems through inclusivity.

Sessions are set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 25 and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 26. Attendees will have meals on their own, but there will be a social hour with light snacks and refreshments at 5:15 p.m. on July 25 at Carriage Factory Art Gallery.

More details will be announced closer to the event date.

Kansas Main Street event July 25-26 in Downtown Newton

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of West Avenue A on the south side. 

Not many are old enough to remember, but Cow Creek was an open channel west of Main Street. 

The first photo shows what that looked like in the early 1900s.

In 1928, the city commissioned the Stamey Construction Co. to cover the open channel from Main Street to Washington Street. The second photo shows that work in progress.

The creek is still open from Washington to Adams Street. This allowed more business access along Avenue A. 

One of those businesses was the Bornholdt Feed &amp; Seed downtown store, owned by Vernon and Edna Bornholdt. They also had the location at 1518 W. 4th that later became a garden center. The third photo shows the Bornholdt location at 13 W. Avenue A in 1959.

After the old Isham's Furniture Store building at 101 S. Main burned down in 1992, the city razed the entire south side of the block and developed the Avenue A Park and Splash Park. The fourth photo shows the park maintenance building today, approximately where the Bornholdt business was located.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tiffany Davison with the American Red Cross is looking forward to having Eagle listeners and readers give blood on May 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the studios at 9th and Main in Hutchinson.

"May is trauma awareness month," Davison said. "Of course, we want to make sure that the blood is on the shelf for those emergencies or those accidents. We say that an accident victim could use up to 100 units of blood."

The Wednesday drive will be the last chance for Hutchinson residents to get in on the Red Cross May promotion.
