HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In the comments at the close of Wednesday's Hutchinson City Council meeting, Mayor Jon Richardson floated an idea about changing when the council meets.

"I would like to talk about moving our meetings back to the evenings," Richardson said. "5:30 p.m. There's a couple reasons. I know this has been done before and the idea was to get more participation from the community and during that phase, it didn't show much more people showing up. I think it's important to recognize that this is an unpaid position, so for people to run for City Council, they need to be able to keep their job. A lot of times, that is a conflict that prevents them from running for City Council. I would like to see our City Council meetings move to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, rather than 9 a.m. on Tuesdays. I know it's controversial, but there are some good reasons for it and I think, just the fact of opening it up for people to be able to run for City Council is a big part of it."

There was a little pushback from council member Stacy Goss just trying to figure out the logistics and council member Greg Fast made a solid point about employees that need to attend.

"My concern is city staff, then they have to be here," Fast said. "We've got the city staff here. Captain Collins, I'm sure, doesn't want to come and look after us in the evening. I'm sure they will do what we ask and be fine with it. Most of them are salaried."

Richardson acknowledges that it can't happen right away.

"I think it's something worth having more discussions about at the very minimum," Richardson said. "It's not something that we have to change for the next meeting, but over the course of the next few months or end of year or beginning next year, we could be looking at something like this."

It's really too late this time around to have an effect on who runs, as the filing deadline was June 1.

Mayor wants meetings moved

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man who drove onto a Louisville sidewalk and struck a Kansas family in town for an AAU basketball tournament in 2022 is still awaiting trial a year later.

Michael Hurley's bond was reduced in June to $50,000 cash as he awaits his final pretrial hearing August 15 in the crash that killed Trey Jones and injured his wife Amy and their daughter, then Nickerson prep and now Iowa Hawkeye Ava Jones on July 5, 2022.

According to reporting from <a href="https://www.wdrb.com/news/crime-reports/bond-lowered-for-man-charged-with-hitting-family-with-his-car-killing-father/">Louisville TV station WDRB</a>, Hurley faces&nbsp;charges of one count of murder, three counts of assault and one count of driving under the influence.

Hurley was on probation in Indiana for drug-related charges at the time of the crash, according to court documents detailing his criminal history.

Driver in accident that killed Nickerson coach, injured family still awaiting trial

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Wednesday passed the plat for the Kingpin Substation that will be constructed on land south of 23rd and Lorraine. Though the council didn't necessarily like the idea of what Evergy may build there, there wasn't much they could do, according to City Attorney Paul Brown, as ordinances are currently written.

"The only thing before you is to approve a final plat," Brown said. "That's a ministerial act. Evergy is combining four lots into one. They are entitled to do that. It's not out of the ordinary. The platting process has been followed. Really, that would be the only issue. I understand you've been lobbied by neighbors adjoining to the tract. None of those matters raised by them have anything to do with this plat and this is the only thing before you. You're not approving projects. You're not approving zoning. You're not approving anything except a plat. Evergy is entitled to have that approved, just like all the other plats that come before the council."

That answer didn't really satisfy Dan Garber of 1206 East 21st.

"Paul may be correct," Garber said. "However, I've seen city ordinances in other cities that relate to the placement and the effect of electric substations. I'm thinking that cities in the state of Kansas are allowed to have ordinances that pertain to the requirements that are put in there. I guess, we as a neighborhood have been shocked and surprised that this could come in without any public hearings. It feels like it was snuck in and it will impact our property values."

Evergy will likely begin construction on the substation in 2025 and complete it in 2027.

"We're switching over the transmission to Hutchinson to 115 kV from 69 kV," said John Miller, civil engineer with Evergy. "Doing that, we'll end up removing about three substations that are currently within the city. They are at 18th and Plum, 14th and Lorraine and 11th and Halstead."

The plat was approved on a 3-2 vote, with Steve Garza, Stuart Conklin III and Jon Richardson voting in favor and Greg Fast and Stacy Goss voting against.

Plat for Evergy substation goes forward

Sky Ryders Performing Arts Foundation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In 1955, H.D. “Prof” McCosh reorganized the three year old drum and bugle corps founded by the Lysle Rishel American Legion Post 68, and adopted the name “Sky Ryders.” After 35 years in Hutchinson, the corps relocated to DeSoto, Texas for financial reasons, and sadly, in 1994, folded.

Twenty-nine years later, Sky Ryder alumni led by Dr. Jay Smith have founded the Sky Ryders Performing Arts Foundation (SRPAF) in Hutchinson, with the intention of bringing the Sky Ryders back to the community where it began over seventy years ago. Men and women from California, Missouri, Montana, Texas, Wisconsin, and of course, Kansas, have come together to enable young adults to have the same sort of positive, skill and character building, artistic experience that they had as young adults.

Today, there exists thousands of Sky Ryder alumni, spread out all over the world. Many are physicians, lawyers, professors, engineers, scientists and dentists. They are college band directors, musicians, administrators, architects, accountants, and school teachers. Many more have owned private businesses, but all are hardworking, dedicated men and women. Each of them credit their formative time with the Sky Ryders in Hutchinson or DeSoto, as a reason for their success and joy in life.

For those reasons, the SRPAF is committed to bringing the corps back to Hutchinson. To restart a corps today takes a large amount of capital, volunteers and community partnerships. The return of competitive drum corps to Kansas will be achieved thoughtfully, one step at a time, and the finished product will be an organization that Hutchinson, and all of Kansas, can be proud. The SRPAF is raising funds from around the state, nation and world to make this a reality. It is working within the drum corps community to secure the best instruments, equipment, and anything else needed for its operation. It is working with local schools to find instructors and rehearsal facilities.

On Monday, July 17, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. the SRPAF will kick off its campaign. That afternoon and evening at Gowans Stadium on the HCC campus, the 20-time Drum Corps International World Champion Blue Devils from Concord, California will be rehearsing their 2023 production, and around 8 p.m. will be giving several performances for band students, alumni, and interested local community members from all over Kansas. There is no entry fee for the exhibition performances, though donations to the SRPAF will be accepted.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of East Second Avenue and North Walnut. 

The early Reno County Homesteaders had few options for jobs in 1873. The wholesale slaughter of what is estimated at four million bison near extinction caused many to collect the bones by the wagonload for money just to keep from starving. 

These bones were used by eastern manufacturers for fertilizer and shirt buttons, and piled at the location of today's topic. 

Fred Harvey worked with the A.T.&amp; S.F. Railway to build a first-class hotel with his restaurant in it. That hotel, designed by Louis Curtiss of K.C., cost $250,000 to build — the most expensive hotel in the state at that time. It was named the Bisonte after the bone pile that was located there. 

Construction was from 1906-1908. The first photo shows the Bisonte, new in 1908.

The second photo shows the north (track-side) view in 1920.

The third photo shows the elegant interior lobby.

The popularity of auto travel caused the railroads to slow passenger traffic and the Bisonte suffered too. In 1946, the American Legion bought the hotel for $25,000. But even the Legion couldn't make it work financially. 

In 1964, all the contents were auctioned off and the grand old building was razed in 1965. The fourth photo shows the Bisonte coming down (what a shame).

In 1967, the Ramada Inn constructed the current building. The fifth photo shows the 100 E. 2nd location today, now the New Beginnings - Meadowlark Commons &amp; Walnut Court Apartments.

BUHLER, Kan. —&nbsp;The Buhler Community Foundation announced on July 5, they are now accepting proposals for 2023 Fund for Buhler grants.

Each year the Buhler Community Foundation awards grants for programs demonstrating innovative ideas or solutions to critical needs in the Buhler community. To date, BCF endowed funds have given over $160,000 to support projects in sectors ranging from health and human services to the arts to parks and nature.

Applications may be completed online through a link found at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.buhlercf.org/grant-application" target="_blank">www.buhlercf.org/grant-application</a>. Proposals may be submitted until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15.

Buhler grant proposal deadline next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There are still spots for Session Two of the Hutchinson Art Center's Summer Art Camp. Session Two will start on Monday, July 17th and go through July 28th. 

Group A (ages 6-9) are meeting at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Group B (ages 10-13) are meeting from 11:00 a.m to noon Monday through Thursday, with free open art studio being from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Friday for students wanting to finish projects they started earlier in the week.

Hutchinson Art Center July Summer Art Camp still has spots

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival is coming up in Newton, taking place on July 7 and July 8. The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival’s 2023 theme is Sun, Surf &amp; Sand Creek.&nbsp;

The Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival is a dynamic summer festival, encouraging Newton and surrounding communities to celebrate and discover numerous fun and enjoyable events bundled together on the banks of Sand Creek.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sand Creek Festival, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) that originated in 2017 to promote and establish fun, endearing and educational local community-based events in the Newton, Kansas area.&nbsp;

Sand Creek Festival, Inc. also uses its physical inventory and resources to help other local festivals and organizations which include: The Newton Kiwanis Club, Sedgwick Fall Festival, 2019 Newton High School Graduation Party, 2021 Newton High School Prom, Harvey County Now Blues, Brews &amp; BBQ Event, Koerner Heights Youth Group, and the Harvey County United Way Chill Cook-off.&nbsp;

This year, Sand Creek Festival, Inc.&nbsp;will assist the Slate Creek PTO in raising money for the Slate Creek Inclusive Playground Project by using their brand-new Waterfall Dunk Tank. Instead of someone&nbsp;falling in a ton of water, a ton of water is dumped on particpants.&nbsp;

Caring Hands Humane Society will once again benefit from the Weiner Dog Races and costume contest at the festival. Bring your pet&nbsp;to run or dress to impress.&nbsp;

Events during the festival will range from entertaining to deliciously delectable, as well as competitive to educational. &nbsp;

The festival will boast multiple stage concerts and individual music performances. This year’s shows will be “for the girlz” with ladies taking the spotlight this year at the&nbsp;Country on the Creek Concert. Additionally, as part of this year's theme, this year’s Sand Creek Charli is a woman. &nbsp;

Children can take a ride on the Sand Creek Sentinel, the official barrel train of Summer Daze or participate in water balloon launching. There will be several talent performances including dazzling magicians and ventriloquists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sand Creek Summer Daze Festival this weekend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If there is a Hutchinson Community College sporting event happening in Hutchinson, you can almost guarantee that Jeff Emrick and Casey McLain are in the stands, rooting for the Dragons! Earlier in 2023, when Denny Stoecklein, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for HCC and TECH Board Member, had the idea for a collaboration with a TECH Artist to paint the HCC Dragon mascot for the college, both of these gentleman were natural choices for the TECH Artists to tackle the project.

When TECH Art Coach, Sam Carriker, started talking to Jeff and Casey about the commissioned piece and the vision for what they would look like, she knew she wanted to help them create pieces that complimented one another and at the same time, featured styles that each artist excelled at. “We wanted it to match the HCC Dragons logo and incorporate the school colors. Through the design process, we went off of what the clients were good at and enjoy doing for a technique,” said Sam. Casey is really good at dry brushing and therefore, his piece turned out like a spotlight. While Jeff can do dry brushing, his piece had more of a framed “feel,” which really complimented his skills and abilities!

“We were so excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with TECH and its art program on these paintings,” said Stoecklein. He went on to say, “Both Casey and Jeff are loyal Blue Dragon fans, and when we discovered their involvement in the program and their amazing talents, we knew we had to make this happen.”

Both pieces will hang on the HCC campus and the community will have the opportunity to purchase prints from the TECH Art Gallery, which are now available for pre-order by visiting the <a href="https://techinc.org/hccdragonsart">site for each piece</a>.

TECH artists commissioned for Hutchinson Community College pieces

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat harvest is 46% complete, well behind 80% last year, and behind 63% for the five-year average, according to the official statistics provided by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in its crop progress report for the week ending July 2, 2023. Winter wheat conditions rated 51% very poor to poor, 33% fair and 16% good to excellent.&nbsp;

Hot temperatures through July 4th meant farmers were in the fields ahead of the widespread showers that moved in on the evening of the July 4th holiday.&nbsp;

In Ness County at the D.E. Bondurant Grain Company, Gary Gantz said during the 4th of July weekend, several producers were cutting wheat. Friday and Saturday were particularly busy days, especially for the Riverside location. Gantz predicted harvest will continue into late July.

Gantz stated farmers in the area who had not terminated their wheat were seeing slightly better yields than what they had initially thought. Yields ranged from 25 to 35 bushels per acre, with decent test weights and high proteins in the 12.5 to 14 percent range.&nbsp;

Last year, during the 2022 wheat harvest, which was another dry year for the Kansas wheat crop, Gantz recalled they only received about 50% of their normal amount of wheat. With the already dry conditions following 2022, the 2023 crop was off to less than ideal conditions that continued into harvest. This harvest, the elevator is seeing a mere 25% of normal wheat quantity. About 40-50% of the planted 2023 wheat crop in the area was abandoned. Although this wheat crop was very disappointing, with these late rains, Gantz noted the elevator remains optimistic for currently growing fall crops. One such rain event brought as much as three inches of rain.

Derek Sawyer, a Kansas Wheat Commission board member located in McPherson County, reports that he wrapped up his 2023 wheat harvest on July 1st, having started on June 15th. He adds that 85-90% of his county has also finished their harvest for this year.&nbsp;

“I had some really bad double crop that averaged 20 bushels per acre,” Sawyer said, noting his overall crop average was 48 bushels per acre.

An outstanding variety for Sawyer was WestBred 4699. His protein was 14 percent, with test weights in the 58-60 pound range, just slightly below average. There was very little abandonment in the area, about 5-10%, due to the challenges of the spring freeze and hail. In addition to freeze damage and hail being an issue, thin wheat stands caused weed pressure to be more prevalent.&nbsp;

Kendall Poland, of the Sublette Co-op in Haskell County, said harvest has just really gotten started. Only one of his farmers has been able to get into the fields after these recent rains. The wheat crop is shaping up to be very minimal so far - almost 95% of dryland wheat acres were abandoned in the area. With wheat harvest only having just begun on Tuesday, June 27, and more rain in the forecast, wheat harvest might extend much further into the calendar than what anyone is used to.

Despite the slow start to harvest, Poland remarked how much of a blessing these rains have been to this parched area of Kansas. Hailstorms have torn through the area causing damage to corn and cotton acres. Although the hail wasn’t large, there was a lot of it.

With moisture still persisting, many parts of the state that have wheat left to cut will be delayed a few more days. Check back on July 10 as the Kansas Wheat crew continues to share results from the field with the next harvest report.&nbsp;

 </figure>Kansas wheat harvest is 46% complete, well behind 80% last year, and behind 63% for the five-year average, according to the official statistics provided by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in its crop progress report for the week ending July 2, 2023. Winter wheat conditions rated 51% very poor to poor, 33% fair and 16% good to excellent.&nbsp;Hot temperatures through July 4th meant farmers were in the fields ahead of the widespread showers that moved in on the evening of the July 4th holiday.&nbsp;In Ness County at the D.E. Bondurant Grain Company, Gary Gantz said during the 4th of July weekend, several producers were cutting wheat. Friday and Saturday were particularly busy days, especially for the Riverside location. Gantz predicted harvest will continue into late July.Gantz stated farmers in the area who had not terminated their wheat were seeing slightly better yields than what they had initially thought. Yields ranged from 25 to 35 bushels per acre, with decent test weights and high proteins in the 12.5 to 14 percent range.&nbsp;Last year, during the 2022 wheat harvest, which was another dry year for the Kansas wheat crop, Gantz recalled they only received about 50% of their normal amount of wheat. With the already dry conditions following 2022, the 2023 crop was off to less than ideal conditions that continued into harvest. This harvest, the elevator is seeing a mere 25% of normal wheat quantity. About 40-50% of the planted 2023 wheat crop in the area was abandoned. Although this wheat crop was very disappointing, with these late rains, Gantz noted the elevator remains optimistic for currently growing fall crops. One such rain event brought as much as three inches of rain.Derek Sawyer, a Kansas Wheat Commission board member located in McPherson County, reports that he wrapped up his 2023 wheat harvest on July 1st, having started on June 15th. He adds that 85-90% of his county has also finished their harvest for this year.&nbsp;“I had some really bad double crop that averaged 20 bushels per acre,” Sawyer said, noting his overall crop average was 48 bushels per acre.An outstanding variety for Sawyer was WestBred 4699. His protein was 14 percent, with test weights in the 58-60 pound range, just slightly below average. There was very little abandonment in the area, about 5-10%, due to the challenges of the spring freeze and hail. In addition to freeze damage and hail being an issue, thin wheat stands caused weed pressure to be more prevalent.&nbsp;Kendall Poland, of the Sublette Co-op in Haskell County, said harvest has just really gotten started. Only one of his farmers has been able to get into the fields after these recent rains. The wheat crop is shaping up to be very minimal so far - almost 95% of dryland wheat acres were abandoned in the area. With wheat harvest only having just begun on Tuesday, June 27, and more rain in the forecast, wheat harvest might extend much further into the calendar than what anyone is used to.Despite the slow start to harvest, Poland remarked how much of a blessing these rains have been to this parched area of Kansas. Hailstorms have torn through the area causing damage to corn and cotton acres. Although the hail wasn’t large, there was a lot of it.With moisture still persisting, many parts of the state that have wheat left to cut will be delayed a few more days. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved a resolution for sending out for the bonding of previously approved city projects at its meeting Wednesday morning after the July 4 holiday.

"We have already done the resolutions or ordinances for authorizing the projects to be bonded," said Finance Director Angela Richard. "The next step is to approve this resolution, which will allow us to go out to bids to actually bond these projects."

The approval amount is $2,600,000. The bonding would be for&nbsp;$2,444,000, with additional monies going toward the cost of the bond sale.

The projects this would encompass include:

14th at Marland &amp; Hoagland Bridge, estimated at $1,050,000

Harsha Park Improvements estimated at $350,000

Playgrounds -Grandview and Herman Bunte estimated at $275,000

City Hall HVAC Replacement estimated at $160,000

Woodie Seat Design and Study estimated at $450,000

"The bond sale would be scheduled for August 14," Richard said. "We would come to you again August 15 to authorize the sale and with the bid results for the sale. We would anticipate closing on the bonds around September 12. That's when we would actually get the proceeds from the bond sale."

Bond sale approved Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters responded to 210 Hyde Park at 9:33 a.m. Wednesday for a residential structure fire. 

Heavy smoke was pushing out of the eaves of a two-story home when firefighters arrived. Crews made an interior attack and found high heat and zero visibility on the second floor. Crews made a coordinated vertical ventilation effort with fire attack and systematically extinguished the fire in the attic area. Crews searched the home, not locating anyone. 

No injuries were reported and moderate damage to the home was sustained. 

The fire was located in a second story bedroom with fire extending into the attic space. Fire investigators are currently working to determine a cause.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center and Wichita Regional Office (VBA) are hosting a PACT Act one-stop shop for Veterans and their family members to learn more about the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act at the Hutchinson VA Clinic at&nbsp;1625 East 30th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8.

"The PACT Act is a new law that expands access to VA health care and benefits for those exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances," said Tamara Thomas with the Dole VA Medical Center. "This law helps us provide generations of veterans and their survivors with the care and benefits they well earned and deserve. It expands and extends eligibility for VA health care for Veterans with toxic exposures and Veterans of the Vietnam-era, Gulf War-era, post 9/11 and it expands eligibility for benefits."

David Jackson with the Veterans Benefits Administration wants to be clear, this is an expansion that means that even if you have been denied before, you should come and ask again, or if you need help working out red tape with the VA, show up on Saturday.

"I just want to talk to every Veteran, their caregivers, survivors," Jackson said. "You served our country. You sacrificed for our country. Now, it's our time to serve you. I just want to make sure that people understand that if you apply for PACT Act related benefits on or before August 9, 2023, your benefits may be back dated to August 10, 2022. Get your claims in as soon as possible. Please come see us. We want to talk to you. We want to help you. We appreciate your service. A lot of us are veterans at the VA. We're passionate about you. Come see us, please."

Even those who are not career military and served in the National Guard or in the reserves are also eligible for some benefits under this legislation.

"Guard and reserve are eligible for the PACT Act, as well," Thomas said. "Those are different things that we are getting out there to our Guard and reserve branches, letting them know. If they've served over two years and one day in wartime, they are eligible for benefits. That brings them into the VA, especially with the VA health care that they are needing. Also, if they did serve in the deployment area, they are getting up to 10 years of free health care from that deployment."

During this event, you can address disability claims, enroll in health care, attend education sessions, and receive a toxic exposure screening.

PACT Act VA signup event Saturday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Jon Richardson said that the Hutchinson City Council is going to try to keep costs down as much as they can, but that's a tough task this year.

"We went revenue neutral last year and that was a tough lift," Richardson said. "This year, to try to do it two years in a row with inflation rates the way they are would be really difficult. We are, I'm going to speak on behalf of the council, because we've had these discussions, we are shooting to be better than inflation by a good margin. I don't know if we'll get to revenue neutral."

Inflation has been reflected in the valuations of property in the area.

"With the inflation being six to nine percent, depending on what you look at, I think property valuations went up six to seven percent on average," Richardson said. "We're trying to be about half that, on what we did over our spend last year."

Reno County is planning to pass a revenue neutral budget for 2024.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor Jon Richardson said that the Hutchinson City Council is going to try to keep costs down as much as they can, but that's a tough task this year."We went revenue neutral last year and that was a tough lift," Richardson said. "This year, to try to do it two years in a row with inflation rates the way they are would be really difficult. We are, I'm going to speak on behalf of the council, because we've had these discussions, we are shooting to be better than inflation by a good margin. I don't know if we'll get to revenue neutral."Inflation has been reflected in the valuations of property in the area."With the inflation being six to nine percent, depending on what you look at, I think property valuations went up six to seven percent on average," Richardson said. Mayor: Trying to be frugal, but not likely revenue neutral

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — David Foster with the Hutchinson YMCA said there will be a special Saturday Night at the Y event for middle schoolers this Saturday in Hutchinson.

"It will be from 6 to 8 p.m.," Foster said. "That's one hour shorter than normal, but we are lucky to be having it at Salt City Splash."

This is a continuation of the Saturday nights at the Y that have been going on throughout the school year.

"It is for any 6th, 7th or 8th grader, that would count this school year," Foster said. "If they were in 6th, 7th or 8th grade the school year that just ended, they would still be eligible to come. We'll restart the school year in September. That would be anybody in the community in Hutchinson and Reno County. If they've already been to an event, all they need to do is sign in and if they would be a new student attending, they would just need to have a parent, when they drop them off, fill out a registration form and a waiver and they would be good to go."

The event will be back at the Y in August.

"It is something that we're offering throughout the summer," Foster said. "We had such great success with it during the school year. We want people to know and kids to know they still have that option to come and have some fun at least one night during the summer."

Foster said so far, they have averaged 125 students per event.

Special Saturday Night at the Y this weekend

The Veterans Honor Banners project hosted by the Vieyra Honors Foundation (VHF) with support from the Chamber and the City of Hutchinson will be back in Downtown Hutchinson this fall.

Banners are on sale thru July 15, 2023 and will be displayed in Downtown Hutchinson from mid‐September through Veterans Day weekend. 

 There are just a few spots remaining for banners this year, so be sure to register soon.   

President &amp; Founder of VHF, Marla Booher,said she and her fellow board members are excited and grateful for the support they have received for the Veterans Honor Banners project. 

"This community really showed up to help us honor the Veterans in and from Reno County," Booher said. "We feel it is so important to continue to bring awareness and show recognition for those who have made the sacrifices they did to serve our country."

 There are currently over 4,000 Veterans in Reno County and it is the goal of VHF to be able to honor and recognize each one of them in some way or another.  VHF is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to support veterans’ programs in Reno County by providing resources through fundraising and awareness initiatives.

The annual Festival of Remembrance for Hospice and Homecare of Reno County to benefit the Hospice House has been scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18 at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

"This year will be our 22nd Festival of Remembrance," said Darla Wilson with Hospice. "Those dollars just go to offset all of the care and the maintenance and everything that's required to keep that building going and provide it to our community."

This one night of fun includes silent and live auctions, raffle drawings for big ticket items and even a car giveaway.

"We have around 50 seats remaining," Wilson said. "Those tickets are $85. You can purchase them on our <a href="https://www.hutchregional.com/hospice-homecare-of-reno-county/events/festival-of-remembrance/registration-sponsorship/">website</a>&nbsp;or come to our office and get those."
