HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor. If you are older, even if you haven't fallen, talk to your health care provider about how to minimize that risk.

"A lot of patients think that they don't want to mention it to their primary care provider," said Jessica Knight APRN FNP-C with&nbsp;Hutchinson Primary Care Associates. "They really should. It's part of our job. Especially after the age of 65, it's kind of part of Medicare guidelines to be screening for those questions, have you had a fall within the last six months, did you have a fall with an injury? Those things help us escalate the need for intervention."

Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.

"If they have fallen and have hit their head and they've got obvious head trauma, lacerations, abrasions, anything like that on their head, especially in older adults, we get concerned for bleeding on the brain somewhere," said Kaity Hollingsworth, Trauma Coordinator with Hutchinson  Regional Emergency Department. "If you come in, whether it's private vehicle or EMS and you've got anything going on, any injury to your head, you're going to go straight back for a CT scan, usually of your head and neck, just to make sure there's no bleeding, no fractures in your neck, anything like that."

Improving strength and balance is an important way to prevent falls overall.

"Exercise is the main thing we tell patients," Knight said. "Strength training, we get them into physical therapy for balance training. Those are the main research based things that we tell patients to do."

Fall prevention is important, talk to your provider

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Grace Bible Church and Dr. Grant Ringler, DDS along with healthcare and service providers from across the community are joining together for Grace Health Day at Ringler's office and at the church on Saturday, Sept. 23. Dr. Ringler had done dentistry events pre-pandemic.

"We started our own 501(c)(3) called Grace Dental Day, Inc. We are thrilled to be offering that again," said Dr. Ringler. "We partnered with Grace Bible Church and with Pastor Josue, because we want it expanded to the community in all other aspects of services."

There will be free screenings for dentistry at Dr. Ringler's office at 3008 Garden Grove Parkway, with triage starting at 7 a.m. Saturday and the screenings at Grace Bible Church, which will include chiropractic, optometry, a basic respiratory assessment, vital signs checks, counseling, sexual health services and even haircuts, will all happen at 1221 East 33rd between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

"We are thrilled to just reach out the caring hands of Jesus, really and just help people where they are at," Dr. Ringler said. "We understand, everyone has a different life story, a different journey they are on. We're there just to serve and to love on these people and really to treat them with the best of care."

For Pastor Josue Pineda Dale, it's important for those in the Spanish-speaking community to know that this event is for them, too.

"We are also trying to reach out to the Hispanic community living here," Pastor Josue said. "We invite them to come out. Know that it's first come first served basis, there are no prerequisites. We will have translators at every station, both at Grace and at Dr. Ringler's office, so you are welcome to come."

Foundation to hold workshop next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters helped rescue a person stuck in Cow Creek on Thursday evening.

Crews were dispatched just before 6:15 p.m. to an entrapment with a person stuck in mud up to his chest. When crews got to Cow Creek, they found a man in his mid-twenties stuck in the mud. That person's friends that called 911 said before they called, he was only in as deep as his knees, but by the time crews got there, he had sunk over a foot.&nbsp;

Firefighters used a rope to put around him to keep him from sinking any further and then got a ladder and put it next to him to allow him to use the strength he had left to help hoist him out of the mud.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Fire also wanted to thank assisting agencies Reno County Dispatch, Reno County EMS, Hutchinson Police and the City of Hutchinson Public Works Department.

Firefighters rescue person trapped in Cow Creek Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center is hosting the first of its monthly art projects for children on Saturday. 

These classes will be taught by Cinde Smith, who was the instructor for this year's Kids Summer Art Camp. Two groups will meet either the second or third Saturday of the month from September 2023 through May 2024. 

Much like at the annual Kids Summer Art Camp, students will develop art production skills (drawing, painting, collage and sculpture), learn about the elements of art and the principles of design, and have the opportunity to solve problems and express themselves creatively. 

These sessions are open to children aged 6-12, with children aged 6-7 in Group A and children aged 8-12 in Group B. Each group art session costs $6 per child. 

The Center will announce specific art projects and their theme on a monthly basis, so check the Art Center website regularly to see what projects will be available for a particular month. 

The theme for September is "Cake and Ice Cream!", with classes taking place on Saturday, September 23rd. Parents can learn more about this month's projects as well as register their child <a href="https://www.hutchinsonartcenter.net/monthly-childrens-art-projects">online</a>.

Kids art class coming up Saturday at Hutchinson Art Center

LYONS, Kan. — Seven students from Sterling High School toured Hospital District No. 1 of Rice County in Lyons, KS as part of their Intro to Healthcare class. The students were given a behind-the-scenes look at the hospital and spent time in specialized areas and departments.

Sterling Medical Center physician Stacy Dashiell spoke with the students about the vital need for local healthcare and why she chose to come back to Sterling to practice medicine and raise her family.

“After graduating from Sterling College, I went to the University of Kansas for medical school and completed my residency program in Kansas City. Even before I graduated, I knew that I wanted to come back to Sterling to practice medicine in a rural environment because I am passionate in my belief that everyone deserves access to care close to home, no matter your zip code.”

The students who ranged from sophomores to seniors had a variety of medical career interests including respiratory therapy, nursing, laboratory, and radiology.

“There are so many career choices in the medical field that being exposed to them in high school helps you make informed decisions,” said Dr. Dashiell. “Rural communities historically have struggled with a shortage of healthcare providers – we must be showcasing the many healthcare career pathways to our next generation. After all, the community is why Rice Community Healthcare exists.”

Students also said they were surprised at how many professionals are involved, beyond just doctors and nurses.

Wendy Calderwood teaches the Intro to Healthcare class. “Students often know about obvious career paths such as nursing or physical therapy, but it’s good for them to see many of the hidden pathways that sometimes don’t require a college degree,” Mrs. Calderwood said.

“By partnering with local schools, we hope to build up the future health care workers of Kansas,” said Tiffany Pulley, MLT, Lab Manager. “We want students to know that if they want to remain local after high&nbsp;school, they can achieve many of their goals right here in Rice County.”

Sterling High students tour Rice County Hospital

The Kansas Association of Wheat Growers joins U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) and the National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) in thanking Senator Mike Braun (R-IN), Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) and Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) for introduction of the American Farmers Feed the World Act of 2023 in the U.S. Senate. The bi-partisan legislation would restore the original intent of the Food for Peace program without spending additional Farm Bill resources, while also safeguarding the interests of hard-working American farmers in providing food to those in need around the world.

USW and NAWG have joined the broader agriculture industry in backing the legislation, seeing it as an effort to use U.S.-grown commodities to fight global hunger rather than spending American taxpayers’ dollars to purchase food from competitors of the U.S. wheat industry.

“The Kansas Association of Wheat Growers applauds the support of Senator Marshall on the American Farmers Feed the World Act of 2023,” said Justin Gilpin, CEO of Kansas Wheat. “The Food for Peace program has a storied history in Kansas, sparked by a Kansas farmer who suggested U.S. farmers could share their harvest with global neighbors. Wheat food aid donations now average around 30 million bushels per year. Keeping the food in food aid remains an important aspect of these programs that are designed to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need around the world.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department is holding a dedication ceremony for their new Truck 1 next month. 

According to information from the department, the ceremony will be at 6 p.m. on Monday evening, Oct. 2 at Fire Station 1 at 2222 North Main.

The public is welcome to help push the new truck into the bay that evening.

Hutch Fire Truck 1 to be dedicated next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Rural Mainstreet Index survey from Creighton University is showing some signs of increasing economic headwinds, as the September overall number is at 49.5, which is below growth neutral.

"Farm income is down," Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said. "Exports are down, exports of processed food and agriculture are down. Of course, that has a lot to do with what's going on in China, or not going on in China. Germany and Europe are also slowing down and even in recession. It's a little tougher out there right now. The Federal Reserve recognized that and decided not to raise rates."

Economic headwinds are even stronger in the short term in Kansas than the survey showed for the region and survey respondents see problems continuing in the banking sector.

"We're going to see more issues related to banking," Goss said. "The federal government, in its regulatory zeal, is putting pressure on some of the banking sectors, particularly smaller banks. As Janet Yellen says, big banks, too big to fail, small banks, perhaps too small to succeed."

Even though the Fed held the line this time, Goss doesn't see that as their strategy for long, not even until the end of the year.

"I think we're going to see one more rate hike of twenty-five basis points," Goss said. "The Fed is trying to send a message. We stand ready to raise rates, not lower them. We hear calls for, hey, let's raise the target inflation rate from two percent to three percent. Jay Powell says, not on my watch. In other words, he's fearful of others, those of us in the buying community and wage community, asking for higher wages because we think inflation is picking up. Wages are picking up, real wages, that's inflation adjusted wages, are now rising."

The September reading is the weakest reading of the index since March.

Goss: Headwinds increasing on Rural Main Street

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 1200 block of North Main Street on the west side. 

Charles Winchester was a very successful businessman and owned the Winchester Packing Co. About 1910, he built a large, lovely home at 1219 N. Main. The first photo shows that home about 1925.

Charles died in 1929 (age 74) and his widow, Nell, continued to live there. In April of 1935, she sold the home to Jim Elliott and Dale Gard. They converted the home to a modern mortuary. Gard even resided there for a while. The name was Elliott-Gard Funeral Home. The second photo shows that conversion in 1937.

In 1948, Bill Elliott joined the business. The third photo shows the building improvements in 1951.

In 1952, the Elliotts bought out Gard's partnership. In 1953, Don Elliott joined the firm. In 1962, the chapel and covered drive were added, and the name was changed to Elliott Mortuary. The fourth photo shows that building upgrade.

The fifth photo shows Elliott Mortuary today, still at 1219 N. Main. Notice the original house is still visible, although the siding has changed. This exemplifies a longterm family business, now run by Tom Elliott, that has prospered for 88 years.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 36

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Vice-Mayor Greg Fast knows that there are things the railroads that serve Hutchinson should address, but there isn't a lot that the city can do to change their timetable.

"I know Dan Deming had a piece in the Hutch News this weekend," Fast said. "He talked about just painting the railroad bridge at 30th and K-61. We've already contacted the railroad to do that. We just wait on their timeframe, once again."

It's not that the railroad won't listen to the city, but they have little control over when any of the railroads can get to an individual project.

"We do have some connections," Fast said. "We have some engineers that have some phone numbers that can usually move the needle a little bit, especially on terrible crossings. Again, we do the best we can. We deal with a lot of different government agencies. For lack of a better way of saying it, we all have to play nice together."

It's also frustrating for drivers when streets are blocked by trains, but there really isn't much that can be done in those cases from a local perspective.

"I was just talking to State Rep. Joe Siewert the other morning at the Fair," Fast said. "We were talking about the lobbying that went into, the trains are about twice as long as they ever used to be. It's causing some issues in the county and obviously, it causes issues here in Hutchinson. The good news is, we won't be rebuilding the bridge over the railroad tracks on the Woodie Seat Freeway. That bridge is good. We're leaving that. That should not disrupt any rail service or any of that."

There is a court case still in the system to decide whether or not states can regulate how long a stopped train may block a grade crossing. If the lower court ruling is allowed to stand, they won't be able to do that at all.

Fast: Railroads are a challenge to get action from

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 has its Homecoming on Friday, Sept. 29, and the district wants the city to get involved.

"The goal is to blow it up this year and do it again and again and again," said spokesperson Stacy Goss. "We really want the community involvement. In talking with the community and with some of our district leaders, we felt like that has been lacking for a little while and we're hoping to turn that around and really drive some community involvement with the district."

One of the big additions to the festivities is a downtown parade.

"The parade is Friday, Sept. 29 at 3:45 p.m.," Goss said. "We will be on Main Street, starting at Avenue B and going up to 7th. Just a short parade, but we will have the Homecoming candidates, the sports teams and we do have an early release that day, one hour early release for all schools to allow students and staff to get to the parade, get their prime viewing spot and get set up."

The community has come together to support the parade route, as well, according to Graber Elementary principal Jesse Ediger.

"Sarah Diamond, for our downtown coalition, has been a great partner," Ediger said. "We reached out to her wondering if we could decorate downtown in blue and gold for Homecoming week. We have 18 businesses that signed up downtown. They donated their storefront windows for posters made by elementary students and middle school students. I'm excited to see downtown next week, all decorated in blue and gold. HHS Booster Club was also incredible. Travis Booe is generously going to sponsor all of the candy for the parade. That was the one thing that I heard from community members and when I was talking to students. Initially, we thought, let's be involved in the parade. Can we get elementary in the parade? The kids said, no way, we want to be on the sidelines getting the candy."

USD 308 making Homecoming an emphasis this fall

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The next Adopt-A-Pet event is Saturday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the EAGLE Media studios with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/9b98e1b1-d2bd-4d7e-8f21-ca64d57ce2cf">Michaela Schommer with the shelter said the events this year have really helped get some pets into new homes, as about 20 pets have been adopted from the four previous events.</a> Schommer notes that the shelter remains at capacity at this point.

"That's not a normal thing," Schommer said. "I would say, for the past year and a half, it's become the normal for every animal shelter across the United States. There's a whole combination of things, a cocktail of things that are just creating an environment of people not able to keep their pets. Some of it is COVID. People, during COVID, they adopted a lot of animals and they were home, working from home."

Going back to the office can be emotionally tough for owners and pets.

"They don't want to leave their pets alone," Schommer said. "The pet has become so accustomed to having their person all of the time, that now that they are leaving the home, they are seeing a lot of behavior problems. Many people, especially due to the economy, can't afford behavior training or modification, as we, of course, would advise and hope someone would put into their dogs or cats."

It is costing more and more for the shelter to keep the animals it takes in.

"Personally, I feel like it's 10 to 15% in the cost of our food," Schommer said. "The cost of medical care is increasing. Medicines are increasing. Then, that trickles down. Our bottom line is, we have got to get these animals spayed and neutered and healthy and fixed and into new homes. If new homes can't afford pets, they're not adopting. We're really struggling."

Even if you don't have the money to adopt on Saturday, the shelter would take monetary donations to help with those expenses, as well.

Adopt-A-Pet coming up Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Trapped alone in a Utah canyon for nearly a week and pinned by a half-ton boulder Aron Ralston had to choose between his hand and his life. He chose survival — amputating his own limb, rappelling 65 feet and hiking seven miles to rescue.

Ralston will bring his amazing, inspirational story home to Hutchinson at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 26 when he appears as part of the Dillon Lecture Series at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Ralston's heroic story is the subject of the film "127 Hours," starring James Franco and directed by Oscar-winning Danny Boyle. Boyle's film, based on Ralston's 2004 New York Times bestselling autobiography, "Between a Rock and a Hard Place," received six Oscar nominations, including "Best Picture."

Following a miraculous rescue spearheaded by his mom and with the aid of prosthetics he helped design, Aron returned to his outdoor passions, completing elite mountaineering projects which remain unrepeated even to this day. Attendees credit Ralston's story with encouraging them through disease, disability, and loss, even saving their lives from suicide and depression.

Aron's incredible triumph in the face of insurmountable odds inspires audiences to harness the power of their deepest motivations, relationships, and mindset to transform personal and professional "boulders" into their blessings. Today, Ralston continues to pursue high-altitude adventures, advocates for wilderness protection and tries to keep up with his two spirited children, Leo and Elisabetta.

Tickets to the lecture will be available beginning at 9:45 a.m. the day of the lecture at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The events will be Monday, December 4 on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The sponsor expo will be in the Sunflower South Building, with the dinner and program in the Meadowlark Building. TOPEKA, Kan. — Twenty-seven&nbsp;school officials from across Kansas have been selected to participate in KASB’s Business Operations Leadership Development (BOLD) class of school leaders.

The BOLD program focuses on the daily operations and long-range planning to run a school district. The program develops knowledge of building and facilities master planning, technology planning, finance strategies, procurement processes, school security, risk management and human resources.

Selectees will participate in seven training sessions developed by KASB leadership staff, KASB business partners and experts from across the state.

Area school officials part of KASB BOLD Class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Join Cosmosphere Thursday, September 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Central for The Wonder of it All: One Person's Journey to NASA, with virtual guest speaker, Sandy Marshall, Public Engagement Specialist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Sandy Marshall flew his first mission and his life changed forever. 

That first mission was in the summer of 1989 at what was then known as the Cosmosphere's Future Astronaut Training Program. While Sandy's future didn't include becoming an astronaut, that experience linked his trajectory inextricably to space and how to communicate the complexity of the science of it all in ways to inspire enthusiasts and future explorers. Learn about Marshall's projects and research in which he’s been involved in both the arts and sciences: including studying the communication &amp; leadership lessons from Mission Control, creating content for broad audiences across multiple platforms, and how we improvise in everyday team environments.

Sandy Marshall is a writer, producer, and science communicator based in Los Angeles.He serves as a Public Engagement Specialist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where he supports current &amp; future solar system missions and NASA’s Deep Space Network.

Prior to joining JPL, Sandy worked at the intersection of digital media, business, and entertainment for over 20 years. He wrote the satirical business column Workish in the Financial Post, and co-created the acclaimed REACH: A Space Podcast for Kids, which was featured on a live downlink with the International Space Station.

Coffee at the Cosmo coming up Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There was robust discussion at Tuesday's Hutchinson City Council meeting about being clear that the public can speak to items as they come up on the agenda, not just at the public input portion of a meeting about items that are not on the agenda.

"Things are able to come out of committee and then immediately come before the City Council," council member Stacy Goss said. "If it's immediately on the agenda for us after it comes out of committee, it doesn't allow any time for us to allow public comment or allow kind of a cooling off period to consider what the committee just completed."

City Attorney Paul Brown clarified that yes, the council can choose to allow the public to comment when an item is on the agenda at the time that it comes up on the agenda.

"We haven't been allowing for that or encouraging that, in a way," Goss said. "I think if we...maybe it's just everybody's misunderstanding of how the process should be. It didn't sit well with me when the Evergy topic was up and we had people in the audience who, I've never seen them at a meeting before, they only came because the topic they were interested in was being considered. They sat there and they didn't get to talk because, then when we got to the agenda item, we heard from Evergy, we heard from city officials, but we didn't hear from the audience."

There are other things that can be done to allow the council to have an idea of the public response for an item.

"A lot of places have people sign up to speak," Goss said. "I don't know if that's for record keeping or what, but there's more than one way to skin a cat and I don't think that there's any strong feelings about holding to the way that we currently do things."

Goss also raised the issue of having some of the meetings in the evening, as well, but that is a topic that will need some further discussion after the election, when the body finds out if it will have the same members or not.

Hutchinson City Council wants public input, even on agenda items

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Adam Stewart with the Hutch Rec Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative reminds Hutchinson residents that the third annual SW Bricktown Fiesta is Saturday at SW Bricktown Park.

"That is Saturday starting at 5 p.m. in SW Bricktown Park and on 1st Street in front of it," Stewart said. "That is in the 300 block of West 1st.

The street will become a dance floor with three different acts, including 620 In The Mix, run by Dominic Saiz.

I'm glad that we're able to do it annually. We plan to rock it out this year and we plan on doing it again for years to come."

Mariachi Jalisco and Conjunto Kabal will also play on Saturday. There will be inflatables, food trucks and more along with the entertainment. The neighborhood appreciates the support of local business for the event.

Third Annual SW Bricktown Fiesta is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas said a new partnership with Apple can help iPhone owners in car trouble.

"We're talking about Apple's technology, introduced with the iPhone 15 lineup as well as the iPhone 14, that makes it able to connect to us via satellite, even when there's no wi-fi or cell service. The roadside assistance via satellite is available to all iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 users in the U.S. That's regardless of whether they are a AAA member or not."

&nbsp;AAA responds to approximately 30 million calls for roadside assistance annually and serves more than 63 million members.

"Roadside assistance via satellite is built on technology that empowers Emergency SOS via satellite. That's technology that was launched by Apple in 2022," Steward said. "We're excited about it. It really opens up our ability to serve stranded motorists, especially when they are in a situation where they may not be able to normally call using their cell phone."

It is important to note that AAA may not be able to help if you are not on a road.

"There are some limitations in terms of where we can go to help rescue," Steward said. "There has to be a road fairly nearby. We're not going to be able to take a tow truck up the side of a mountain or deep into a forest, but, you know, as long as there is a road fairly nearby, we can get there and help out."

Service will be provided in the U.S. and Puerto Rico beginning September 22, 2023.
