HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann headed to Washington D.C. on Tuesday with a lot of uncertainty about the final resolution of the budget process and the looming end of the federal fiscal year.

"If these four bills that are going to come up, combined with what's already been done, go through, this would account for almost 75% of federal spending," Mann said. "Some cuts have been made, some serious reductions in certain areas, if these bills, as proposed, pass. There will be a slew of amendments. We have a very busy week."

Even if the House passes the bills through it plans to vote on, the Senate would still have to agree to the language, otherwise, it would be quite difficult to get the process completed in just a week's time and some sort of stopgap measure would likely have to be passed to avoid a government shutdown.

"We're $33 trillion in debt," Mann said. "Washington, in my view, spends too much and borrows too much. Get those bills done and then we will see if there is a willingness or the votes are there for some kind of a stopgap spending bill, which I would like to tie to securing our border, or something like that."

Mann doesn't believe that there is any serious threat to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy at this point.

"I don't hear rumblings of any serious notion that he would not continue to be the Speaker," Mann said. "We've got to get back to Washington D.C., have a lot of these votes, have a lot of these conversations and get things figured out with the government spending and let's see where it goes, but I don't see that changing."

The federal fiscal year ends at the end of the day on Sept. 30.

Mann said budget picture is unclear heading into final week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education signed a non-binding letter at their meeting Monday night to allow conversations to continue about expansion of the Hutchinson YMCA.

"To the east of them is Hutch High," said USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson. "To the west of them is the ESC/TSC, also known as the naval building. To expand on their site, they would have to have some of our property. Then, there has been a little bit of conversation about, we really want to start, maybe, raising money. Could we get to a point where maybe we have just a letter of agreement and the goal of what's in this agreement, so that we could tell folks who might want to help us raise money to expand the Y, we can at least say, this is something that we're working on?"

The board agreed to sign the letter. It includes items like that the Y would have to pay to have the departments that are in the naval building moved elsewhere and that the Salthawk swim team, which now rents from the Y, might be able to use a new facility, if built in that footprint, without having to pay to rent it. The board vote was unanimous.&nbsp;

Fundraising for the new Y will not start until after the United Way's fundraising blackout period ends later this year.

USD 308 Board signs letter; YMCA to look at expanding on current site

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School Alumni Association, in cooperation with Hutchinson High School, will induct the 24th class of honorees to the Wall of Honor on Thursday, September 28th during their annual banquet.

The 2023-24 honorees are Michael Gunther, class of 1962; Peggy Thorne Childs, class of 1967; and Bryan Miller, class of 1997.

Sponsored by the HHS Alumni Association, in cooperation with Hutchinson High School, the group will be honored during a banquet at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 28, in the HHS Career and Technical Education Academy, located at 800 15th Circle.Doors open at 5:30pm. The public is invited and encouraged to attend as the community celebrates these three individuals who have dedicated their lives to making Hutchinson and the world a better place.

Tickets must be purchased in advance for the banquet. Tickets cost $15 each and can be purchased weekdays in the Hutchinson High School main office, 810 East 13th, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., through Sept. 27. Checks should be made out to “HHS.”&nbsp;

These honorees and their families will formally take their place on the Wall of Honor during the pregame show of the HHS Homecoming varsity football game against Salina South on Friday, September 29. The pregame show begins at approximately 6:30 with a kick off time of 7pm.

Plaques for each honoree featuring the inscriptions below will be mounted in the Salthawk Activity Center for past, present and future Salthawks to visit.&nbsp;

Michael E. Gunther- Class of 1962- Service to the Community

“I’m very proud to be both a citizen of Hutchinson and a Salthawk.” This pride is evident in Mike Gunther’s career path and service to his community.

After graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1962, Mike worked for Carey Salt. In 1969, he joined the Hutchinson Fire Department. While working for the Fire Department, he received a degree in Fire Science from Hutchinson Community College, and an EMT Certification from the State of Kansas. After 26 years of service, Mike retired as a Captain. He also served as the Treasurer for the Kansas State Council of Firefighters. To this day, Mike holds a lifetime position as Treasurer Emeritus. Following his career as a Firefighter, Mike continued to serve the community for 11 years as a Water Meter Technician with the City of Hutchinson. In 2005, Mike began taking Tae Kwon Do lessons. At the spry age of 70, Mike obtained his black belt, in which he is currently a 5th degree. He spent numerous years providing free lessons to area youth. Mike helped local children learn not only the fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do, but also how to be a respectful and productive member of society. The commitment to community service has been a reoccurring theme in Mike’s life. He has spent numerous hours working with children, facilitating the local Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, delivering Meals on Wheels and serving at the Soup Kitchen through his church. Mike has always been an avid supporter of Hutchinson High School athletics and was instrumental in establishing the signs coming into Hutchinson commemorating the 7 State Football Championships.

Mike Gunther’s belief in public service and mentoring the youth of our community ensures him a position of distinction on Hutchinson High School’s Alumni Wall of Honor.

Peggy Thorne Childs- Class of 1967- Service to Education-&nbsp;

Peggy Childs, a graduate of Hutchinson High School in 1967, was a lifelong educator who made a significant difference in the learning experiences of Kansas kids. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Kansas and worked as a full-time and substitute elementary teacher for many years of her life. In 1987, Peggy was elected to the Hutchinson Board of Education and served on the Board for 23 consecutive years. She was re-elected five times and her tenure included several terms as the Board’s President and Vice President. During her service on the board, a number of initiatives were approved that transformed public education in Hutchinson, including: The addition of elementary school counselors, a $78.6 million bond project that allowed for improvements in every single school in the district, a summer meal program and re-designing Liberty and Sherman into 7th and 8th grade centers. Peggy was known for advocating for the education and well-being of all the children of Hutchinson, even when the decisions weren’t easy to make. She strongly believed that a quality education can change one’s trajectory in life, and that every child in Hutchinson was deserving of such an experience. Peggy also improved the lives of children in Hutchinson through her active membership on the Hutchinson Recreation Commission board, the Head Start Policy Council, and the Educational Facilities Authority of Reno County.

She took great pride in being a product of Hutchinson Public Schools and was a passionate champion for USD 308 students, educators, and staff.

Bryan C. Miller- Class of 1997- Leading lives through coaching

“Hutch High is a place that helped me grow as a young man, has given me lasting friendships, and sparked a passion for the game of basketball that has brought me back home.” Bryan graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1997. After he graduated from Wichita State University with his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, he then went on to pursue a career in basketball that eventually brought him back home to his high school alma mater. His path to coaching wasn't a straight shot to the helm. He began his coaching career in grassroots basketball, where his program, the Kansas Select, won two national championships. That success opened the door for him to be able to coach at Butler Community College, where he eventually became the head coach. After his tenure there, Bryan moved back home to join the Hutchinson Blue Dragons men’s basketball team. The following year he came back to the Blue and Gold.

Bryan took the helm as Head Basketball Coach at HHS in 2020. The Salthawk basketball program has been transformed by his ability to inspire young players with passion, and sheer knowledge of the game. Leading with servanthood, hard work, and togetherness, the community has been impacted by the success.

2023-24 Hutch High Alumni Honorees to be inducted into Wall of Honor Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeff Herndon, Public Affairs Officer with the&nbsp;Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita notes that there is an important deadline connected with the PACT Act, particularly for recent veterans, coming up Saturday.

"Any veteran who served in a combat zone after Nov. 30, 1998, if they were discharged between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2013, they are eligible for VA health care," Herndon said. "They have to get their application completed before midnight local time on Sept. 30, 2023. That's this Saturday."

You can find out more about eligibility when you visit <a href="http://VA.gov/PACT">VA.gov/PACT</a> or call 1-800-MYVA411, or you can come by the VA Outpatient Clinic at&nbsp;1625 East 30th and the front office will know how to apply. The VA Outpatient Clinic is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

"Especially when it comes to some of those health conditions they have," Herndon said. "There is a presumption that those were service related. No questions asked. If you served in a location, you served during a certain period and you have a health condition, you're going to get that disability rating, and you're in for VA health care."&nbsp;

It's also important to note that no matter what happens in Washington, VA health care will continue.

"VA is not impacted by any government shutdown," Herndon said. "We still come to work. We still provide veterans with their health care."

Also, it is particularly important for Vietnam veterans to apply, as well, especially if they are now retired and their income structure is different, as they may be eligible when they weren't when they applied 20 years ago.&nbsp;

Important VA PACT Act deadline this week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at their regular meeting to consider a rezoning of the property now used by Grace Bible Church.

Where the current church building stands is zoned&nbsp;R-5 High Density Residential District, with property also owned by the church to the east zoned as C-3 Outdoor Commercial District. The request is to change the R-5 portion to also be zoned C-3, so that there is consistent zoning across the applicant’s property.

Also on the agenda is a discussion of text amendments to the Day Care portion of the zoning regulations and discussion of the joint housing study session held on Sept. 19.

The Hutchinson Planning Commission meets Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at 125 East Avenue B.

This has been a tough year, there is no way around it. Rain did not come at the right times and our crops reflect that. Couple that with declining crop prices, rising interest rates and the increasing cost of inputs, things sure are tough on the farm. Without crop insurance, this year would have been disastrous. For many of us the same could have been said for several of the past years. Crop insurance is truly our safety net in agriculture.

That is why protecting crop insurance and other risk management tools is so important in the upcoming farm bill. Agriculture and food security are paramount in the future of our nation. A hungry nation is not a secure nation, and American farmers and ranchers have done their part in providing that food security. Crop insurance is vital to future of agriculture in the United States as it provides a bridge over troubled waters for ag producers.

As farmers we plant our crops not knowing what the weather will throw our way each year. We don’t know what prices we will receive at harvest. Still, we plant with the hope the weather and markets come through for us. We feel a duty to push on through all that uncertainty because we have a calling to feed a hungry world. We do so on razor-thin margins. The vast majority of farms and ranches are family owned and have been for many generations. Agriculture is not only heritage of families like mine, but the heritage of the United States itself.

While crop insurance is our No. 1 priority and critical to farmers and ranchers, other portions of the farm bill are critical also. Funding for conservation work helps to ensure that we protect our air, soil and water. Those of us in agriculture are the biggest proponents of preserving our critical natural resources, and we are constantly working on new methods of protecting the environment around us.

The funding for projects and technical expertise is vital to allow us to implement conservation measures. Without this help many projects like improving waterways or using cover crops to reduce erosion may never be implemented. It should also be pointed out that farmers and ranchers protect the natural resources around them while increasing their productivity and lessening inputs on the lands they have been entrusted with.

Funding for research through our land grant universities and the United States Department of Agriculture is also of critical importance. Agriculture in the U.S. has always been on the leading edge of technology and that is even more critical as we work to feed a growing population. The work done to discover and develop new technology and methods has been a hallmark of our research and extension services and funding is more important than ever.

As my good friend, Ben Boyd from Georgia said, “If you don’t like being dependent on foreign oil, you really won’t like being dependent on foreign food.” That statement was true several years ago when Ben said it on national TV, and it is just as relevant today.

The farm bill, crop insurance, conservation measures and research are critical pieces in the foundation of American agriculture and because of that our nation’s food security. The farm bill is not only for farmers and ranchers but for all who eat in the United States.

Insight: How the farm bill protects everyone

This wonderful Christmas show, based on the book by Marjorie Holmes, tells the greatest love story of all - the story of Mary and Joseph - as it has never been told before. You will encounter beautiful music and dancing with unforgettable moments that will make you laugh and cry. 

The talented cast includes both Barclay College students and local community members. Sophomore Logan Rosales (Wichita, KS), who played Prince Topher in our production of Cinderella, is cast as Joseph. Sophomore Teagan Summers (La Junta, CO), last seen as the White Witch in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" will portray Mary. The songs in this musical are challenging, but these two talented vocalists bring them to life with their skill and passion.

VIP Tickets (center section) for adults and children are $15. Adult tickets are $10, and child tickets (ages 5-12) are $5 for the left and right sections. Lap children are free. Groups of 15 or more can get a special rate of $7 per ticket (available by phone only).

Deb Folkerts, Marilyn Giles, and Lori Binford design and create the costumes with their incredible team. Casey Roberts once again manages all the technical aspects of the show.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for&nbsp;the&nbsp;Cheney State Park Marina&nbsp;public water supply system located in&nbsp;Reno&nbsp;County.&nbsp;The advisory was&nbsp;issued&nbsp;because&nbsp;of&nbsp;a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from the Cheney State Park Marina indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.&nbsp;

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for Cheney State Park Marina, Reno County  

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Rural firefighters were awakened early Monday. According to Reno County Emergency Management at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Fire District #4 was dispatched to hay bales on fire at Longview and Herren Road. 

Approximately 100 large square bales were on fire, stacked about 30 feet high.

The burning bales were less than 100 feet from a hay shed that was also full of bales. Embers were falling down into the hay shed, endangering the bales within the shed. A request for tender trucks was made from Reno County Fire Districts 3, 7, 8, 9, Pretty Prairie, and Hutchinson Fire. In total, 9 water tenders were used to shuttle water to the scene. 

Approximately 70,000 gallons of water was used to protect the hay shed and its contents. A HUGE thanks goes out to Miller Earthworks for providing a large excavator that was used to push over the large burning pile of hay and spread it out. Without the use of the excavator, crews would have had to haul water most of the day until the pile burnt itself down. 

There will be a large pile of hay burning at this location for several days and crews along with the land owner will be monitoring it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hay fire will smolder for days

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After 63 years of leadership and 53 years of ownership by Hutchinson businessman Mert Sellers and family, Luminous Neon, Inc. is set to embark on a new chapter.

The 95-year-old company will be purchased by investors led by Mike King of Hesston, Kan., a seasoned executive with deep construction industry experience and statewide business and governmental relationships and with plans for innovation and growth. The sale is announced by Mert Sellers, Chair; Ron Sellers, Vice Chair; and Tom Sellers, CEO.

“I’m proud of what our employees have accomplished over the years,” said Mert Sellers, Chairman of Luminous Neon. “We’ve always tried to do things the right way.

Mike [King] will have the same goal. This is going to be a great outcome for our dedicated employees and for the thousands of customers we serve.”

The sale of company assets will be completed in late October. All seven Luminous Neon locations including Hutchinson, Olathe, Lawrence, Topeka, Salina, Dodge City, and Wichita will continue uninterrupted operations, as will all employees.

“I couldn’t be more excited to work with such an accomplished and respected team of professionals,” said Mike King, new owner. “I look forward to building upon the 95-year-old foundation of success. This is already a truly great Kansas company, and there are many great days ahead for Luminous Neon employees, customers, and business partners.”

Mike will focus on growth, innovation, and continued customer experience while Tom Sellers, CEO, and Joe Ontjes, President, will continue to run daily operations.

This transition comes after a lengthy review of the opportunity by both parties. The ongoing success of the business was among the most important priorities.

“For years, we’ve carefully explored what the future should look like,” said Ron Sellers. “Mike has the right experience, the right connections, and the right personality to help Luminous Neon prosper and remain a prominent leader in the Kansas sign industry for years to come.”

A renewed vision for the company is important as the company continues to grow.

“Mike brings a valuable skill set,” said Tom Sellers. “Our team looks forward to exploring new growth opportunities while continuing to support our longtime customers. Although change can be unsettling, the right things are in place to ensure a smooth transition to an accomplished business leader with a track record of business success.”

Mr. King, a Hesston native from a multi-generational family of people who build things, brings decades of leadership experience in both the construction industry and at the executive level of state government.

Currently serving as Vice President of Business Development at Hutton Corporation in Wichita, Mr. King will begin focusing full-time on Luminous Neon in early October before the sale of the company finalizes on October 31. Previously, Mr. King was a Region Director at Murphy Tractor &amp; Equipment in Park City and was owner and president at King Enterprise Group of McPherson for 21 years.

Additionally, he was appointed Secretary of the Kansas Department of Transportation and served from 2012-2016, Director of the Kansas Turnpike from 2013-2016, and has filed to run for Kansas State House of Representatives District 74 with elections in 2024.

Luminous Neon, Inc. has completed more than 100,000+ sign projects across Kansas, as well as regionally and nationally. It serves the signage and visual communications needs of some of the area’s best-known and most-respected businesses and organizations.

The company was founded in 1928 as Wholesale Sign Company by Bob McBride in Kansas City, Mo., at the height of neon’s introduction to the United States. In 1939, the company moved to Hutchinson and changed its name to Luminous Neon.

Mert Sellers, Chairman, joined the operation in 1960. He was named president in 1970 and soon acquired the company. Mert celebrated his 63rd year of service in 2023.

Mert’s brother, Ron Sellers, joined the company in 1970 and served as President until 2016, when he assumed the role of Vice Chairman. Ron is in his 53rd year with the company.

Tom Sellers, Mert’s son, joined the business in 1990 and was named Chief Executive Officer in 2016. Tom is completing his 33rd year with the company in 2023.

Sellers family sells Luminous Neon, Inc. to Mike King led investors

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Child Care Task Force will present to the Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday.

Some of the top-line numbers from the presentation show how far things still need to go in the county, despite good progress in recent months. 

According to the agenda packet, only 31% of the child care demand is met in Reno County. Reno County needs 1,962 more child care spots. Twelve percent of Kansas children five and under have parents who quit, changed, or refused a job due to lack of child care.&nbsp;

Child care cost averages between $500 and $580 a month for full-time child care.

The Kansas average provider salary is $28,517 or $13.71 an hour for positions requiring certifications and licensing. Reno County providers make $11.25/hour.

Reno County did receive an over $2 million accelerator grant that will allow for the creation of 308 child care slots.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

Reno County Child Care Task Force to present to County Commission

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Karen Hammersmith with the Reno County Health Department notes that there are several different vaccinations people can receive.

"When we grew up, we had the flu vaccine that was a yearly vaccine, you'd get it in the fall," Hammersmith said. "For the last few years, we've dealt with the pandemic. They've come out with a new strand of the COVID-19 vaccine. I think people are getting that in. I know I talked to a pharmacy yesterday. They thought they'd have it in at the end of next week. We have ours in. We're kind of waiting for billing and coding."

There is another new vaccine, this one is for&nbsp;Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV.

"That's something that they had been working on for years and years," Hammersmith said. "A lot of the time, you're just looking at money and research when you're trying to create a new vaccine. RSV causes pneumonia. That's available for those that are 60 years and older, also, for newborns. We don't have that in yet for the newborns, but it's something that they will be giving and pediatricians are so excited to give it to those kiddos."

The newborn RSV vaccine, Nirsevimab is expected to be available this fall. Expectant parents and parents of infants under the age of 8 months, as well as those with older babies, should talk with their healthcare providers about the vaccination.

This year's flu shot is another quadrivalent shot for four different strains of flu.

"We have our regular Fluzone, that's for six months on up," Hammersmith said. "Then there is a high dose. That's what they really want to give to those that are 65 and older. That has proven to be most effective for that age group."

Health Department encouraging fall vaccinations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County families that include a son or daughter with an IEP or those families whose children may be in need of additional support services through school have a special workshop day on Saturday, October 14 at the MidTown Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sponsored by Families Together, Inc., Reno County Special Education Cooperative and Hutchinson Public Schools, there will be two workshops. 

Strategies for Preventing and De-Escalating Challenging Behaviors will include the seven phases of escalation and how to respond during each phase. Interventions that schools can use for children demonstrating challenging behaviors and some simple tips for home will be included. 

Working for Change: The Power of a Personal Story will guide parents to become systems change agents by using their personal stories. Improving access to services and supports for individuals with disabilties is the goal.

A﻿ll materials and lunch will be provided at no cost to families. A child care voucher will be available to families who attend the entire event.

Event for special ed families in Hutchinson Oct. 14

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Housing Commission will consider a request by the&nbsp;Neighborhood Development department of Hutch Rec for a&nbsp;Block-By-Block Investment program as part of their agenda.

According to August's unapproved meeting minutes, Denice Gilliland with Hutch Rec said there needs to be a program to help homeowners or landlords that need just a little bit of financial help to do a smaller home project but may not qualify for existing programs. 

She told the commission at their meeting in August that many of these applicants would be capable of putting the sweat equity into their property. She explained the neighborhood coordinator will provide technical assistance to residents. The program would target middle income families and to keep a record of applicant information, applicants would submit the man hours they put into the project as well as their expenses. 

She requested $50,000 of leftover ARPA funds to start this pilot program. Each applicant could get up to $1,500 to use for driveway approaches, window repairs, landscaping, exterior lighting, and other small improvements. The match would be 50% of the project cost. 

The grant will be competitive and include featured neighborhoods south of 17th Ave. Applications that demonstrate how neighborhoods will work together and assist each other in their block improvements will have the best chance of approval. This would be similar to the sidewalk program and could be leveraged with Brush Up Hutch or neighborhood fundraising. To make a visible impact, several homes should be in close proximity.

Also on the agenda for the housing commission is a&nbsp;Featured Neighborhood Report from Adam Stewart, a report on the&nbsp;Hutchinson Land Bank from Jim Seitnater, and updates from&nbsp;Interfaith Housing, SCKEDD, &amp; New Beginnings.

The Housing Commission will also discuss conclusions from the Joint Study Session on Housing.

Housing Commission to consider Block by Block ARPA request

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss is dubious about the next few months economically across the Midwest and across the United States.

"What I'm thinking we're going to see between now and the first quarter of 2024, we're going to see much more weakness out there. For example, credit card balances are at record highs. Of course, that means 20% interest, those who carry balances there. That's going to hit us. The real estate market is looking much weaker and again, in the rural areas, farm income is slated to be weaker for 2023 and even weaker for 2024."

Goss expects to see a downturn come next year.

"I expect a recession in the first quarter," Goss said. "I'll call it a soft recession, if I can use that term. It's a bumpy landing. I think that's the term. There's just too much credit out there. It's pushing individuals with record debt on credit cards. You're talking about students paying back their student loans, which I think is a darn good thing. I hope to see that. We need to see that, but that's going to take some of the steam out of the market."

Goss believes we haven't reached the peak federal interest rate yet, but it will happen relatively soon.

"I think, by the time the next increase is implemented, the next move after that will be downward," Goss said. "That will be in the first quarter or second quarter of 2024. They'll pivot, but don't count on a big cut. It's going to be very small increments when they do begin to cut."

It may be a rough ride for a while as the economy readjusts to COVID money and payment delays leaving and getting back to normal operations.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College President Dr. Carter File explained that the $3 million in Congressionally Directed Spending that U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced last month at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is just one piece of what they need to fulfill the vision for an expanded nursing program at HutchCC.

"There's really going to be three parts to this project," File said. "The first part is, we're renovating the second floor of the Peel Center, which is on 9th and Main. That will provide some simulation space and classrooms for our nursing program. We are also partnering with&nbsp;Hutchinson Regional Medical Center on their campus at the hospital. We're going to use their floor and we're going to provide the simulation equipment that will be available to not only college students, our nursing students, but also to their staff to do training. The final piece of the project is at Davis Hall. We're going to renovate and improve and open up some additional student space. All of this will be with the end result to add 20 spots to our current nursing programs."

They still have other needs that must be met to fulfill that goal.

"We have the authorization to do it right now through the Kansas Board of Nursing," File said. "What we don't have is the space. Always the biggest hurdle for us to get over in nursing is to find qualified faculty. What our accreditor would like is an M.S. in Nursing Education. That is not a common designation for most nurses. A lot of nurses do get Master's Degrees, but not the education track. The nursing faculty is not part of the grant. The grant is just for physical equipment and construction."

Because of the student to teacher ratio required by Kansas Board of Nursing Regulations, they can't have more students until they have more staff.

"We'll need at least one full-time instructor and probably a part-time clinical instructor," File said.  </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College President Dr. Carter File explained that the $3 million in Congressionally Directed Spending that U.S. Senator Jerry Moran announced last month at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center is just one piece of what they need to fulfill the vision for an expanded nursing program at HutchCC."There's really going to be three parts to this project," File said. "The first part is, we're renovating the second floor of the Peel Center, which is on 9th and Main. That will provide some simulation space and classrooms for our nursing program. We are also partnering with&nbsp;Hutchinson Regional Medical Center on their campus at the hospital. We're going to use their floor and we're going to provide the simulation equipment that will be available to not only college students, our nursing students, but also to their staff to do training. The final piece of the project is at Davis Hall. We're going to renovate and improve and open up some additional student space. All of this will be with the end result to add 20 spots to our current nursing programs."They still have other needs that must be met to fulfill that goal."We have the authorization to do it right now through the Kansas Board of Nursing," File said. "What we don't have is the space. Always the biggest hurdle for us to get over in nursing is to find qualified faculty. What our accreditor would like is an M.S. in Nursing Education. That is not a common designation for most nurses. A lot of nurses do get Master's Degrees, but not the education track. The nursing faculty is not part of the grant. The grant is just for physical equipment and construction."Because of the student to teacher ratio required by Kansas Board of Nursing Regulations, they can't have more students until they have more staff."We'll need at least one full-time instructor and probably a part-time clinical instructor," File said. File: Expansion of nursing program has three parts

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson is working to give their members opportunities to find out what work is like and that is important in helping them develop a plan for their future.

"It's not like you turn 18 and then on that day, you suddenly know what you want to do and how to be a good employee," said Lindsey Fields with the Boys and Girls Club. "Those are things that you discover through exploration, seeing what's in your community and what interests you and then learning how to be a good employee. That starts from when you're knee-high on up."

The things that help people work well around and with other people have to be taught just as much as anything else.

"When you hire people, you expect them to show up on time, willing to do their job, willing to learn new things and getting along well with others," Fields said. "You know, those are skills. They are not things that are innate. Those are learned at home, they are learned at school and they are learned out in the community, including at the Boys and Girls Club."

It's important for young people to find their place in a community of those who may not all be like them. The Boys and Girls Club helps with that, too.

"Anyone can be a leader," said Lance Patterson with the club. "You have to be given the opportunity. That's one of the things that we really try to do is give kids lots of opportunities to step into those roles. Seventy-three percent of our club members feel that they are pretty good at organizing a group of kids to do something. Now, we hope that something is positive. Leaders show up all over the place. What we are trying to do is recognize that."

Boys and Girls Club getting kids workforce ready

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the official change from summer to fall that happened on Saturday, that doesn't mean the desire to travel goes away, just that the reasons to go may change a little, according to Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas.

"Fall is very popular for scenic drives and quick weekend getaways," Steward said. "There's really so much to see and do, not only in our state, but certainly other parts of the country. Fall foliage is very popular for some people to drive and see. Here in Kansas, Travel Kansas, the state tourism board, provides a lot of great resources on their website."
