Wesley Towers looking for vendors for Fall Festival

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Robert Calhoun with Countryside Baptist Church in Hutchinson wants the community to come Sunday for a special Southern Gospel concert with the Abundance Quartet from Missouri at the church.

"We have not had them before at the church," Calhoun said. "The first time I heard them was at the State Fair a few years ago when they sang at the stage I was in charge of out at the fair. We talked soon after the fair a few years ago and they were already scheduled and then COVID hit and so they stopped a lot of their bookings. They had a cancelation and they got a hold of me."

The concert will be at 10:45 a.m. at the church at 819 West 30th in Hutchinson.

"We will have plenty of seating," Calhoun said. "In fact, we're going to set up some chairs out in our lobby, just to make sure that we're able to accommodate everybody. They are an interesting group, in that they all have varied backgrounds, but when you put it all together, they have almost 80 years sharing God's message of grace and hope through music."

They will take a freewill offering at the concert for the group's expenses.

A strange and vivid memory from my pre-teen world view was thinking after high school life was pretty much over. It makes me laugh and shake my head a little to think about how naive and small my world was because I couldn’t imagine anything worthwhile in life beyond high school. Even as a senior in high school if you had asked what life would look like in 20 years, I don’t think I would have guessed correctly about anything personal or professional. I am happy to report that life has been bigger, better and crazier than I would have imagined; I attended and earned degrees from two universities, have lived at 16 addresses in six states, traveled to 17 countries around the world, worked for 11 companies, made my wildest dreams come true and learned what it takes to achieve greatness at something. There have also been hard times, failures and plenty of stress, but I learned from it all. The best part of my life in the past two decades is the friends I have made along the way. I won’t extol the many virtues of my friends because we all think our friends are the best, but I know I have been blessed with a tribe of people who share my interests, values and ambitions. It took leaving my home town to find most of these people. My graduating class had 52 kids in it. It was a given that you were friends with everyone more out of proximity than commonality. I knew some of my classmates much better than others, but I knew them all and considered them friends. Together, for better or worse, we spent 13 years learning, growing and playing. This fall we have plans for a 20 year class reunion, and I am honestly excited. It may be a case of distance and time making my heart grow fonder but I can’t wait to hear about where their paths have taken them and who they have become. Even if I didn’t get much choice in my classmates, they still hold a special place in my heart; we lived too much life together not to care. I know my perspective on class reunions is not shared by all people. It makes me a little sad to hear someone say they will never attend a reunion. I have never understood people who want nothing to do with their past or the others who feel pressure to look fabulously successful for a reunion. The mean girls and rivalries of TV and movie high school reunions seem to be inflated. I believe in my heart that most people at a reunion are genuinely excited to see each other to catch up and share memories from their time together. Maybe that’s all it really takes for a great reunion: people choosing to believe the best in their former classmates. We can all celebrate success, give an encouraging word of support, or reminisce about the memories of our youth. For one day, we can rekindle relationships that helped us become who we are today, be grateful for our time together and enjoy the grace of time passed. I am choosing to believe in the goodwill and love of all friends, even if they aren’t the ones we chose. I'm honored and delighted to announce Interim Chief Brice Burlie has accepted my offer to become our permanent Chief of Police for the Hutchinson Police Department. Since agreeing to serve as Interim Chief in June 2023, he has proven himself to be a highly capable leader. I am confident his proven leadership skills, combined with his extensive police experience, drive, and strong work ethic, make him the right candidate to meet our city's needs.

Chief Burlie began his law enforcement career with the Hutchinson Police department and has twenty-four years of experience, beginning as a recruit and working his way up through the ranks to Operations Captain. He holds a bachelor's degree in Criminology and Sociology from Kansas State University and has undergone extensive command-level training from Wichita State University, Kansas University, and Northwestern University. Additionally, he was selected by the FBI to attend Session 291 of the FBI National Academy. These qualifications and experience have equipped him with the essential knowledge and skills to make informed and rational decisions as our next Chief of Police.

Brice's unwavering dedication to our entire community has been a key to his success. He is a lifelong Hutch resident and he, along with his wife Staci, have a son and 2 daughters.

I'm very optimistic about the future of the police department under Chief Burlie's leadership.

HAYS, Kan. — ELI Wireline is hiring for a Wireline Repair and Maintenance Technician for the Hays or Hutchinson facility. This is a hands-on, rewarding role where you will be performing wireline repair and maintenance in the oil and gas industry. Job Scope: In a workshop environment, this individual has responsibility for providing "hands-on" technical support to the production and repair of equipment and/or tools. Receives field tools, disassembles them, and repairs and refurbishes the tool to go back to the field using blueprints, manuals, and following protocols. Should be able to diagnose problems with tools/equipment. Primarily troubleshooting, repairing, refurbishing, implementing mandatory modifications and executing and/or planning preventive and corrective maintenance of field equipment and tools, helping to mitigate assets related non-productive time and improve overall service delivery performance. Applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform tasks strictly in accordance with ELI Wireline standards. Receives supervision and thorough review of all work performed from the District Manager.

· Troubleshoot, repair, and refurbish equipment as required by supervisor.

· Implement mandatory modifications and execute and/or plan preventive and corrective maintenance of field equipment and tools.

· Sort and place materials or items on racks, shelves, or in bins as required.

· Prepare equipment for shipment and accept incoming shipments as supervised.

· Convey materials and items from receiving or production areas to storage or to other designated area by hand, forklift, or other means as required.

· Open crates, and other containers, using hand tools as required.

· Verify quantities and count independently as required.

· Required to be available for any approved overtime outside of normal work schedule.

· Required to be available on-call for any urgent needs.

· Follow maintenance and process procedures for applicable products and equipment and complete all relevant documentation.

· Successfully achieve competency standards as set out in the position within company guidelines.

· Know and understand ELI Wireline Quality Policy.

· Must understand and comply with all safety rules and company policies of ELI Wireline.

· Work assignments carried out to the highest quality level and within time constraints as required.

· Perform various other duties and activities as assigned by supervisor within the physical constraints of the job.

· Understand and use all relevant maintenance inspections and repair documentation and procedures for shop personnel.

· Lead basic troubleshooting of equipment.

· 2-year Electronic Technicians Degree or Certificate

· Possess electro-mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of pressure safety.

· Good communication skills, both verbal and written

· Individual must be able to follow instructions.

You Drink. You Drive. You Lose starts Aug. 19

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury in a Reno County murder case did not return a verdict on that count after deliberating for several days.

According to Reno County District Attorney Thomas Stanton, the case against Sandral Wade&nbsp;went to the jury last Wednesday afternoon. The jury deliberated until Monday morning. 

The jury deadlocked on the first three counts (first degree murder of Orlando Gipson, attempted first degree murder of Landre Bowie and aggravated robbery using a deadly weapon), found the defendant not guilty of aggravated robbery - infliction of bodily harm, and guilty of criminal possession of a firearm. 

Stanton said the counts upon which the jury deadlocked will be retried on a future date. No sentencing date on the firearm count was given in Stanton's email to Hutch Post.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury in a Reno County murder case did not return a verdict on that count after deliberating for several days.According to Reno County District Attorney Thomas Stanton, the case against Sandral Wade&nbsp;went to the jury last Wednesday afternoon. The jury deliberated until Monday morning. The jury deadlocked on the first three counts (first degree murder of Orlando Gipson, attempted first degree murder of Landre Bowie and aggravated robbery using a deadly weapon), found the defendant not guilty of aggravated robbery - infliction of bodily harm, and guilty of criminal possession of a firearm. Stanton said the counts upon which the jury deadlocked will be retried on a future date. Jury deadlocks in Reno Co. murder case

NICKERSON, Kan. — According to a message from the Reno County Everbridge system, at noon Monday water will be shut off in Nickerson to repair a line break. 

This will result in an early dismissal for Nickerson High and Nickerson Elementary at 12:30 p.m. Afternoon athletic practices will go on as scheduled.

Staff says they will work to get it back on as quickly as possible.

Water off in Nickerson Monday over lunch

CLOUD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges after a weekend arrest.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Friday, police responded to report of a burglary in the 600 Block of East 6th Street in Concordia, according to a media release.

The investigation led to the arrest of 31-year-old Adam Scott McConnell on a Reno County warrant for a probation violation and requested charges of attempted burglary.

McConnell is being held in the Cloud County jail. He has a previous felony conviction for criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Kansas man wanted in Reno Co. jailed in north-central Kansas

ARLINGTON, Kan. — KG Medical, LLC, a new medical clinic in Arlington, Kansas, will be honored for its commitment to the community.

KG Medical, LLC was named a winner of the 2023 Rising Star Award as a community member that has gone above and beyond to contribute to the betterment of the Arlington community. The nomination came from Arlington Community PRIDE, a participant in the state’s Kansas Community Empowerment program. The award is given by Kansas Community Empowerment which is a partnership of K-State Research and Extension, the Kansas Department of Commerce, the Kansas Masons, and Kansas PRIDE, Inc.

Kansas Community Empowerment to honor Arlington clinic

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will hold a public hearing on the 2024 budget Tuesday, Aug. 15.

City Clerk Sara Howard said the budget was initially prepared to arrive at the Revenue Neutral Rate. That is the&nbsp;maximum levy without an additional hearing and an additional taxpayer notification.

The total budget is $2,073,403 for City and Rec Commission on $358,451 of ad valorem collections.

The City mill levy is 41.892; with the Recreation Commission at 1.478.

Wages for city employees were increased 5%.

The public hearing is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Buhler City offices.

City of Buhler to hold the line on taxes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital is cautioning dog owners to continue to provide preventative care for heartworm disease.

"Last time we were in, we talked about, we've had three cases so far," Miller said. "We've had another one since we were in last time. That's only been two months ago. Mosquitoes are out. I get, a lot of the time, well, you know, my dog is inside the majority of the time. They only go out to go potty. I always say, you know, when we go outside, for me, it's if I just go out to the garden or if I just walk out with my pets, the mosquitoes are on me. If they are on you, they are on your pets. They should be on that yearly heartworm preventative to protect them."

It's a real problem if the infection is allowed to grow.

"When a&nbsp;mosquito bites that is infected with heartworms, when they bite your pet," Miller said. "Essentially, when they go to take a blood meal, some of those worns can wiggle down and go into the bloodstream. Once they are there, they swim around and then they make it to the heart. Once they make it to the heart, that's where they turn into adults and they start reproducing. As they turn into adults, they get big and long, like spaghetti noodle size. The problem with that is, they are causing damage to the heart. Once the heart gets full of heartworms, they spill over into the lungs. Then we're causing damage to the lungs."

Heartworms can produce baby worms for up to seven years in a dog if left untreated.

"We can treat heartworms and we can get rid of them," Miller said. "It's more expensive than prevention, but the damage they have already caused to the heart and lungs, there's no fixing that."

"Our AAA travel agents are seeing a lot of bookings that have already happened for the year end holidays, Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving. It's important to plan ahead and book early. We're seeing that non-stop flights fill up first. Those are filling up quickly."

AAA travel advisors say they’re seeing more people gift travel experiences to loved ones instead of presents.

"It's important if you want your choice of flight, or hotels, or tickets to certain destinations, booking early gives you the opportunity to have a better selection."

AAA travel advisors say touring Christmas markets in Europe is extremely popular and itineraries sell out in advance.

"People may be giving trips to their loved ones for the holidays," Steward said. "Just think about that as another thing that's filling up those flights, those cruise lines, those tickets to destinations."

People also are feeling an urgency to travel coming off of the pandemic, as they want to get in experiences they may have missed the last few years.

AAA: Plan your holiday travel right away

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police posted on social media to remind the public with school starting this week that if a school bus has its red flashing lights on and stop sign extended, then all vehicles going both directions on an undivided road must stop until the bus turns off its red lights and retracts its stop sign. 

 Violating this law is subject to a citation of $315 in the city of Hutchinson. 

STO. 81. Overtaking and Passing School Bus. 

(a) The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking from either direction any school bus stopped on the highway shall stop before reaching such school bus when there is in operation on the school bus the flashing red lights specified in subsection (a) of Section 170, and the driver shall not proceed until such school bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights and the stop signal arm are no longer actuated.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center's Group Photograph Exhibition is opening this Thursday.&nbsp; 

The Art Center is providing an opportunity for local photographers in and around the area to display their work. They took submissions for the last several weeks for the exhibition.

Hutchinson Art Center Photograph Exhibition to begin

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index increased 0.9 of a point in July to 91.9, marking the 19th consecutive month below the 49-year average of 98.

"Optimism has certainly been missing for the last several months from our small business sector," said Dan Murray with NFIB-Kansas. "This is our almost 50th year of doing this survey. Certainly, there are some concerns among Main Street small business owners about where the economy is. Labor quality continues to be the top business concern for small businesses."

Forty-two percent of owners reported job openings that were hard to fill, unchanged from June but remaining historically very high.

"61 percent of owners reported hiring or trying to hire in July," Murray said. "That's up two points from June. Of those trying to hire or hiring, 92% of those owners reported few or no qualified applicants for the positions they are trying to fill."

Twenty-one percent of owners reported that inflation was their single most important problem in operating their business, down three points from June.

"I think one of the positives that we have continued to see, at least, is that consumer spending remains relatively high," Murray said. "Folks are out there spending money, in spite of increased inflation. Our concern is that inflation tends to be cooling, that consumer spending at the same time is going to slack off as we head into the fall."

Among owners reporting lower profits, 30% blamed weaker sales, 19% blamed the rise in the cost of materials, 18% cited labor costs, 9% cited lower prices, 5% cited usual seasonal change, and 4% cited higher taxes or regulatory costs.

The owners, Robert and Jill Garrett, plan an Open House Wednesday August 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Loads of Love program is going to use Busy Bee the first Wednesday of every month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Busy Bee is open every day at 7:30 a.m. The last load can go in at 8 p.m. and lights are out at 9 p.m.

Busy Bee Laundry in Hutchinson features fully-staffed laundry service for both&nbsp;drop-off service&nbsp;AND&nbsp;self-serve machines. 

Busy Bee has new high-efficiency 40, 55 and 70 pound washers and dryers&nbsp;that accept both cash and card.

Open house for new laundry is Wednesday

&nbsp;HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education will take up the annual agreement between the Boys and Girls Club and the school district at its meeting on Monday.

The only changes to the agreement are adding one additional classroom usage at the former Avenue A school and clarifying which areas of the building are to be exclusively used by the&nbsp;Boys and Girls Club.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Monday at the USD 308 Administration Center at 1520 North Plum.

Agreement for upcoming school year on USD 308 agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will give official approval to the bond sale for ongoing projects that they authorized in July as part of Tuesday's meeting. 

The bond sale cost was slightly less than anticipapted and so the final approval amount is $2,510,000. The bonding would be for&nbsp;$2,444,000, with additional monies going toward the cost of the bond sale.

14th at Marland &amp; Hoagland Bridge, estimated at $1,050,000

Harsha Park Improvements estimated at $350,000

Playgrounds -Grandview and Herman Bunte estimated at $275,000

City Hall HVAC Replacement estimated at $160,000

Woodie Seat Design and Study estimated at $450,000

The bond sale is Monday, the approval is Tuesday and closing is scheduled for Sept. 12, which is when the city would get the money.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education will hold its meeting Monday night. An executive session on real estate is scheduled and possible action could be coming after that executive session. 

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/88148849-1410-4b8c-ae88-ac10e073fc1c">When Hutch Post last spoke to Superintendent Cindy Couchman, she had been given permission to make an offer on behalf of the district for the&nbsp;Masonic Lodge building at 1800 East 23rd and that group was scheduled to meet to discuss the issue. </a>

The agenda does not specifically say what the real estate session is about, but given that context, it is reasonable to infer that space for the Ad Astra Academies is the topic, as that is what they would use the Masonic building for, if the district completes that purchase.
