HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The closure on 30th Avenue between Apple Lane and K-61 Highway will expand to include traffic in both directions beginning Tuesday at 8 a.m.

City officials said further investigation of the stormwater infrastructure determined that closing both the eastbound and westbound lanes is necessary to protect motorists and crews while the infrastructure is evaluated and work continues.

Traffic traveling in either direction will be detoured south to 17th Avenue.

The westbound lanes were initially closed Aug. 20 after a storm pipe failed beneath the roadway, creating a potential risk of a roadway collapse.

Repair work is scheduled to begin Monday. Crews are working to reopen 30th Avenue before the Kansas State Fair begins.

Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time and use caution around the work zone.
