HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;According to NASA, the Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023,&nbsp;<a href="https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/eclipses/about-eclipses/types/#annular">annular solar eclipse</a>&nbsp;will cross North, Central, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America.

STEM Educator Mary Smith with Cosmosphere says we won't see the Ring of Fire, but it will be significant here.

"Here in Hutchinson, we'll only see about 70% of the sun covered," Smith said. "Unless you travel kind of down southwest in the United States, through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, out that direction. There's about 130 mile wide path that you have to be in if you want to see the full ring of fire."

The beginning of the covering will happen Saturday morning.

"10:21 in the morning, it's on a Saturday morning, so you don't have to miss work," Smith said. "Then, the max eclipse is going to be just before noon, about 11:46 a.m. That's when about 70% will be covered and then, when we get to about 1:18 p.m., that's when the moon will completely move across and be out of the path, so then you won't see it any more."

Smith said it is best not to look at the eclipse without special glasses. You can buy those at the Cosmosphere. Also, you shouldn't try to photograph the eclipse without special filters. Pointing your phone at it will likely ruin your phone's camera.

"There's people out there that are going to be photographing it that you can go admire," Smith said. "I recommend just going out and enjoying it, not worrying so much about photographing it, but enjoying it with your eyes, letting the professionals take the pictures."

Always inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use; if torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged, discard the device. Always supervise children using solar viewers.

Grace Arbor neighborhood hosting Block Party

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and you can find them in Reno County. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks found a group of juvenile birds along the Ninnescah River near Castleton.&nbsp;

Terrestrial Ecologist Zach Eddy said the birds were found on private ground as a part of the KDWP's research study on the ecology of bald eagles. The study began in the Spring of 2021 with 13 birds.

"There are several that are tracked and observed," said Eddy "This particular nest just happened to fit in the correct age range."

The state announced last week that their research on bald eagles will expand for three more years. The research study is being funded by the Chickadee Checkoff. The fund is a public tax donation and can be included on tax forms or as a donation made to the department.

"We actually had some additional research money," Eddy said. "We thought, you know what, if we can expand this contract and expand the research, we can learn a little bit more, we can extend the data collection in time and we may be able to follow some of those initial birds from the time they fledge and leave the nest they are born in until they establish their own nesting territories."

Eddy said the goal is to catch juvenile eagles from their nests because they are easier to study. Over time, they can use these young birds to see if there is any difference in how they use the landscape and air space as they mature through adulthood.&nbsp;

"You've got to catch them when they are mostly feathered but before they are capable of flight so we can access them in the nests," Eddy said. "It's a much more challenging project if the birds are mature enough that they already know how to fly and then you essentially have to use some type of net."

To get the eagles down from their nests, the KDWP and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put them in a small bag to bring them down on a pulley. 

The eagles are fitted with a cap to cover their eyes to calm them down. After that, their size measurements and blood samples are taken. Then they get fitted with an ID band and a GPS transmitter backpack and returned back to their nests.&nbsp;

Bald Eagle hatched nestlings have also been located in Barton, Stafford, Kingman, Chase, Morris, Geary and Pottawatomie counties.&nbsp;

"Lots of folks seem to have a soft spot for them so getting land owner access, and participation, and locating eagles in the nest is actually fairly easy to do," Eddy said.&nbsp;

There isn't any conclusive data on the birds yet. Eddy said GPS data analysis from their research partners will probably come back next year. He said the KDWP will use the data to inform the public of conservation activities or impact minimization recommendations for the species moving forward.&nbsp;

"We are really anxious to get a longer term data set and see if some of these birds actually return to their natal ranges to establish new nests here in the next four or six years," Eddy said.&nbsp;

The Long Run: Reno County eagles part of statewide study

HARVEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a three vehicle crash and fire that shut down portions of U.S. 50 in Harvey County have identified the drivers involved.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 2017 Buick Enclave driven by Mary K. Hall, 84, Newton, was eastbound on U.S. 50 one half mile east of Anderson Street.&nbsp;

The driver attempted to change lanes and struck an eastbound 2022 Peterbilt semi driven by Jose E&nbsp;Chaves-Rosales, 38,&nbsp;Canutillo, Texas.&nbsp; The impact caused the Buick to cross the median and strike a westbound 2013 Freightliner semi driven by Luis R. Simon, 60, Emporia.

After impact, the Freightliner crossed the median, entered the south ditch, traveled through a KDOT fence and struck a storage facility that started a fire.&nbsp;

Multiple RVs burned in the fire, and the building structure was seriously damaged, according to Newton Fire and EMS. About 25 acres on the north side of U.S. 50 burned, but crews were able to keep the fire from jumping SW 14th Street toward the residential neighborhood.

EMS transported Hall to Wesley Medical Center and Simon to Newton Medical Center.&nbsp;Chaves-Rosales was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

KHP IDs drivers in crash, fire that destroyed multiple RVs

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals will both look at amendments to the bylaws for those boards as they hold a meeting Oct. 19.

Also, the Planning Commission has an executive session scheduled with legal counsel to discuss confidential legal matters, but no decision is expected on that item.

There are no zoning cases before either body on Thursday, as staff is making preparations for the public meeting regarding commercial solar regulations. The Oct. 19 meetings are at 4:30 p.m.&nbsp;at the Reno County Public Works facility at 600 Scott Boulevard in South Hutchinson.

County Planning Commission and BZA to look at bylaws 

WICHITA, Kan. — A Hutchinson occupational therapist was one of the statewide recipients of an award&nbsp;for an outstanding contribution to a Kansas community and the state’s economy at the Kansas Department of Commerce’s 2023 To the Stars: Kansas Business Awards ceremony in Wichita Thursday night.

Dr. Megan Bartley of Clothed in Compassion, Hutchinson won the Under 30 Entrepreneur and Businessperson Award.

CiC is the first non-profit pediatric occupational therapy clinic in Reno County. Founded by Bartley to meet a healthcare gap in her hometown, CiC provides accessible, specialized care that meets families where they are—regardless of financial circumstances or ability.

CiC officially opened their doors to the community on October 31st, 2022. They are currently serving more than 40 families on a weekly basis, and host a series of sensory-friendly events &amp; camps throughout the year, such as their Sensory &amp; Santa Christmas event.

A record 297 businesses, organizations, and individuals were nominated in nine categories for this year’s To the Stars: Kansas Business Awards. Nominees were reviewed and scored for various criteria such as business expansion, employee recruitment and retention practices, training and educational programs, capital investments, and support of local community events. A total of 245 Merit Awards and 43 Regional Awards were presented at the event. Additionally, one nominee in each category was designated a Statewide Winner, making them finalists for the Governor’s Award of Excellence.

A Hutchinson woman was among three new members elected to the national board for an advocacy group for the food program that helps day care homes.

According to a release from the board, Kate Abernathy of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Beth Carlton of Hutchinson, Kansas; and Sarah McAleavy of Frederick, Maryland began their terms on the National CACFP Sponsors Board of Directors beginning October 1, 2023. Re-elected to a three-year term through September 30, 2026 are Denise Andrews of Vici, Oklahoma; Rhonda Kobylecky of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Alix Pasillas of Reno, Nevada.

All six highly-qualified leaders bring a great depth of experience in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and are involved in the management of a sponsoring organization for family day care homes and/or child care centers that participate in the USDA child nutrition program.

Kate Abernathy is the Chief Executive Officer at Providers Choice, which serves close to 40,000 children through sponsoring family day care homes and unaffiliated centers. As an NCA Board Member, Kate hopes to continue advocating for children and child care providers across the US and promoting legislation that will improve child nutrition outcomes.

Denise Andrews is the co-founder and Executive Director of For the Children CACFP (FTC), which was established in 2000 as a nonprofit CACFP Sponsor for licensed child care homes. Denise started her career as a young child care provider over 30 years ago and now in her position at FTC, strives to develop cooperative working relationships with other sponsors and child care providers.

Beth Carlton is the Executive Director for Child Care Links Association and has been working in the CACFP since 1998. Child Care Links currently sponsors child care homes and centers on the CACFP, provides child care subsidies to families in need, is a licensed Resource and Referral Agency, and offers required training for child care providers.

Rhonda Kobylecky serves as the National Director of Food Services for a multi-state Head Start organization. Acelero Learning operates in four states and serves over 5,000 children. Additionally, Kobylecky consults for Acelero’s sister program, Shine Implement, which consists of a multi-state partnership with Head Start programs across the nation, also serving over 5,000 children.

Sarah McAleavy is Supervisor of CACFP at Frederick Community Action CACFP, where they sponsor family day care homes, At-Risk Afterschool, and the Summer Food Service Program, serving over 1,200 children in Maryland. Sarah has been with CACFP for over 19 years and would like to be able to reach sponsors, providers and organizations with NCA’s message of working towards healthy children and adults.

Alix Pasillas joined Food for Kids 23 years ago as a field monitor and now serves as Executive Director. She has provided guidance that has resulted in the growth of the program throughout Nevada, expanding the program to sponsor child care centers and adult day care centers in addition to family day care homes. Alix continues to reinforce the sponsorship’s success with passion and determination for bringing healthy, nutritious meals to children and adults in programs that are a part of CACFP.

The experience, talent, passion, and commitment these professionals share for the CACFP is inspiring.

They are excited to serve on the NCA Board of Directors to represent the entire association and participate in development of programs, activities, and policy positions.

Since 1986, NCA has served as a national platform for the Child and Adult Care Food Program Community. Hutchinson resident to serve on national board

The flurry of fall fieldwork season makes October a fitting month to recognize the cooperatives that help supply Kansas wheat producers with grain storage, marketing, field recommendations, inputs and patronage. Cooperatives have existed nearly as long as farmers have been farming as producers learned how to pool resources and expertise to support each other’s operations. National Co-op Month is a nationwide event that raises awareness of how cooperatives provide a tried-and-true way to do business and support resilient communities.&nbsp;

And while rural Kansans are familiar with the prairie skyscrapers that dot the horizon — iconic grain elevators with the town name often painted in bold, block letters — cooperatives are more than just a place to deliver and store grain. Today, these member-driven businesses can also provide credit, insurance, electric service, health care, housing, telephone services and even childcare. Cooperatives also help support more than row-crop agriculture, representing industries from grape juice to electricity.&nbsp;

“In Kansas, agricultural cooperatives are very grain marketing-based, but outside of Kansas that is not the case,” said Brandi Miller, president/CEO of the Kansas Cooperative Council, the organization that has represented the cooperative business model in the Sunflower State since 1944. “There are a lot of cooperatives focused on consumer products. People see their products on the shelves and don’t realize they function exactly like the co-op they see in their hometown.”

According to the Kansas Cooperative Council, Kansas is home to more than 575 co-op locations with more than 116,000 members and 5,000 employees. Those businesses support the health of local economies by creating jobs, paying property taxes and income taxes and giving to charity.&nbsp;

The weather-driven challenges of the past few growing seasons have made this payback difficult for cooperatives, just as it has been difficult for their farmer members. But, Miller reminds farmers that just as they are resolved to adapt in challenging times, so are the cooperatives of which they are members. Kansas cooperatives are working to explore options to do things differently or more efficiently to help provide better services to their members, investments that take time and money to implement, but match the innovation that takes place on Kansas farms.&nbsp;

To support awareness of how cooperatives function, the Kansas Cooperative Council developed a series of “Co-ops 101 Videos” for educational uses from employee or new board director onboarding to sharing about what cooperatives do with high school students or interns. The videos were developed through a grant with CHS, Inc. and in collaboration with Brian Briggeman, director of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics. They cover a variety of introductory topics, including the definition and function of a cooperative, the seven cooperative principles, patronage, allocated equity retirement, co-op governance, qualified versus non-qualified patronage distributions and how patronage distributions are determined.&nbsp;

Miller hopes the video series and other efforts during National Co-op Month encourage both farmers and others to learn more about the cooperatives in their communities. She also encourages all to explore how they can help make decisions and set a strategic path forward by serving on that cooperative’s board.&nbsp;

“I always encourage people to consider getting involved in their local cooperative,” Miller said. “Every co-op is looking for good people who want to see their communities flourish and utilize the cooperative to provide community resources. Check it out; it’s an important function in our rural communities.”&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY — Prairie Chapel Mennonite Church south of Crupper's Corner is hosting a fundraiser with food and a concert Friday night at the Pleasantview Activity Center at 5013 South Dean Road.

The Pulled Pork Fundraiser, will include pulled pork, Texas toast, Mac and Cheese, fresh vegetables, brownies and homemade ice cream. Serving begins at 5:30 p.m.

Bluegrass musician and yodeler Aaron Stutzman will hold a concert at 7:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the event will go toward building expansion at Prairie Chapel.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a social media post from the Hutchinson Police Department, Annette Wilson and Ray Hemman (Church Counselor) with the Emanuel Lutheran Church have been operating Repair and Share for 4 years.&nbsp;

The ambition of Repair and Share is that gently used bicycles may be dropped off at the church, where a church member repairs them so that they are able to be ridden. Then the bicycles are offered for those in need upon request, with proof of identification.&nbsp;

Last year the program exceeded expectations and is now reaching more people in need of transportation than ever before. 

The Hutchinson Police Department frequently picks up abandoned bicycles, if they are not picked up within the 60 day required hold, they will now be donated to Repair and Share. Those who wish to donate bicycles should reach out to the church at (620) 662-8622.&nbsp;&nbsp;

PD will donate bikes to Repair and Share program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Dr. Sawsan Amireh, an oncologist with the Chalmers Cancer Center at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System notes that breast cancer is quite common for women in the United States.

"It is the most common cancer in the United States," Dr. Amireh said. "Each year, there are around 300,000 new breast cancer diagnoses. There's around 40,000 deaths because of breast cancer that occurse each year."

Early detection is key to helping mitigate the risk of breast cancer for women.

"The mortality for breast cancer over the past three years has improved dramatically," Dr. Amireh said. "A big component of that is related to early screening and early detection of breast cancer. There are multiple studies and meta analyses that showed that actually doing screening can reduce the risk of death from breast cancer by 20 to 30%."&nbsp; 

In May 2023, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued new draft recommendations for&nbsp;breast cancer screening.

"They are probably going to be changing the recommendations," Dr. Amireh said. "Now, they are going to recommend breast cancer screening mammograms every one to two years even for women who are less than 50, starting at the age of 40 years old."

When breast cancer is caught early while still localized, it is extremely curable.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Director Piper Harding is looking for actors to help her with the next production at Stage 9, called Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind, it's a series of skits to be selected by Harding after the audition process.

"This is for beginners up to experienced actors and anything in between," Harding said. "It's a perfect opportunity for people to try theater, if they've ever wanted to try it."

Because the final list of skits isn't out yet, there are no specific audition requirements.

"The author gives you about 90 in the script and then I pick out 30 of those to do," Harding said. "We have a timer, actually, to keep us honest, and so the actors have to do 30 of these skits, one acts, as the author calls them, in 60 minutes and the show's over, unless the audience says they want more."

Each night of the performances will be guaranteed to be different.

"The audience will choose which skit they want to see," Harding said. "They just yell out a bunch of numbers. We have numbers on a clothesline above the actors' heads. If the actor hears number five, then, the actor pulls down number five and reads the name of the skit on the back, crumples the paper up, throws it into the audience and then says, go, and that skit is performed."&nbsp; 

Auditions are Oct. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. Callbacks (if needed) will be Oct. 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Rehearsals begin Oct. 16 with performances Nov. 2-5.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stage 9 looking for actors for Nov. production

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 300 block of North Main Street on the east side. 

The little building at 304 N. Main was built about 1910 and one of its first tenants was the Iris Theatre, a B-movie theatre showing non-first-run films. The first photo shows the Iris in 1929.

In the 1960s, this slot was the Burnett's News stand. In 1967, Ron and Jolene Cross bought the business and changed the name to Crossroads Books, Magazines and Newspapers. The second photo shows the business during a parade on Main in 1967. 

They were there quite a while. The third photo shows the business in 1980.

After 32 years, Crossroads finally closed in 1999. In 2000, it was City Blueprint and Reproduction Co. In 2002, Ron and Lovella Kelly opened Sarah's Catholic Bookstore in this location. The fourth photo shows this enterprise in 2015. 

The Kellys closed this store in 2017 and then sold the property to Jarrett and Monica Cullens in 2022. The fifth photo shows the business at 304 N. Main today as Thoracic Park Wellness Clinic - Jarrett Cullens D.C.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The public hearing for the loan to do the work on the Yoder and HABIT sewer project was held at the Board of County Commissioners regular meeting on Wednesday.

"I've been working with the county and the project engineer on this project to apply for funding for the aforementioned project," said Rosemary Saunders with Ranson Financial. "It is to benefit both the Yoder and the HABIT area, with the consolidation of the treatment facilities, due to the inability of the Yoder facility to meet parameters. The proposed project is a total of $6,123,100. We are applying to Kansas Department of Health and Environment for a low-interest loan."

Some of that loan, about $1 million, is forgivable, if the terms of the agreement are accepted.

"Commissioners will consider a resolution to move forward on completion of the application," Saunders said. "It is due in Topeka on Oct. 16. We are also pursuing additional funding to make the project possibly more feasible through USDA Rural Development, but we will bring that information to commissioners at a later date."

The resolution passed with all four present commissioners voting in favor.

Public hearing for Yoder and HABIT loan held Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the first time, Reno County schools are rallying as a team of educators for a shared professional learning day called All Hands on Deck on January 3, 2024. 

 Over 1,100 teachers, Hutchinson Community College instructors, and administrators will be on HCC’s campus that day for a day of workshops, keynote presentations, and networking opportunities. 

 An integral component of this day is connecting 1,100 area educators with vendors both inside and outside of education. 

 Vendor options include being a part of the vendor showcase and/or leading presentations for attendees. Paul Erickson with USD 313, who is helping to organize the event, said that they have 22 vendors and room for about 10 more.

South winds 25 to 35 mph sustained with gusts up to 45 mph are expected over portions of central, south central and southeast  Kansas.&nbsp;

Over the summer, IdeaTek crews were hard at work, expanding its ultra-fast fiber internet to hundreds of Valley Center homes and businesses.&nbsp;The northern half of the city is already connected and ready for installations while the southern part is still under construction. By late fall, the entire city will be connected to fiber, bringing residents unlimited and uncapped speeds of up to 2.5 gigabits per second. Furthermore, IdeaTek offers the convenience of no-contract agreements, giving customers more flexibility.IdeaTek has long been dedicated to bridging the digital divide in rural areas, but its mission extends beyond rural communities, said Daniel Friesen, IdeaTek's co-founder and chief innovation officer."At IdeaTek, we believe every community and every Kansan deserves access to high-speed fiber internet, and we’re excited we are making this a reality in Valley Center,” Friesen said. “With fiber, we are providing a new foundation for innovation, creativity and progress in the age of the digital economy."Friesen emphasized that fiber is an investment in Kansas' future growth. Compared to current providers, IdeaTek offers symmetrical upload and download speeds, scalable capacities for decades, enhanced reliability and better pricing.&nbsp;"We build to the standards of the future, not today," he said. "Fiber internet is the gold standard for internet connectivity, and we want to bring this technology to as many communities as possible."IdeaTek has recently built fiber infrastructure in the nearby communities of Colwich, Burrton, Sedgwick, Newton, Hesston, Cheney and Halstead. The company is also currently building fiber internet to Augusta and Maize.&nbsp;For Cicirello, fiber internet is more than just faster speeds; it's a catalyst for progress. He believes that Valley Center's transition to fiber will not only enhance residents' lives but also boost job opportunities, healthcare, education and the city's overall growth in a digital economy.&nbsp;Cicirello said his previous provider left him frustrated, with lagging and throttling during peak hours, especially when students returned home from school. Competition ensures affordable rates, providing residents with uninterrupted connectivity.&nbsp;"Now I'm an IdeaTek customer, the speed and product have been phenomenal," Cicirello said, emphasizing the symmetrical upload and download speeds that often go unnoticed but significantly impact overall bandwidth.Another thing that sets IdeaTek apart, according to Cicirello, is its commitment to keeping promises.&nbsp;"We've been promised fiber before, and it didn't happen. But IdeaTek walked the walk and did what they said they would do," he said.Based in Buhler, IdeaTek was founded in 1999 by Friesen and four high school friends. Today, the company employs over 140 Kansans and is continuing to grow.
