HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Adopt-A-Pet event at the EAGLE Media studios was a success Saturday, but that has not come close to fixing the overall problem.
"We had 6 dogs at the adoption event and 3 cats at the shelter get adopted on Saturday," said Michaela Schommer with the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. "We also took in 2 dogs and 4 cats that day. Sunday was much the same, 3 adoptions and two dogs reclaimed by their families, but we took in 6 animals. It’s a revolving door and the incoming numbers are often higher than the outgoing numbers."
Unfortunately, some area shelters have just made it a habit not to take in any more pets if they are full, and so that makes shelters like Hutchinson's that determine capacity on a case-by-case basis, less likely to get emptied to the point that it solves the problem.
