HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Andrew Soule let Hutch Post know that the Cover the Cruiser event for Special Olympics will be in Nickerson this Friday.

"We sell medallions at each of these events," Soule said. "We'll have a table set up, you come up, give us a donation and we've got some tape and some markers. Sign your name to one of the medallions, you can take it and stick it to the car. The object is to cover as much of the car as we can."

Minimum donation for a single medallion is $1.

"It falls under the Torch Run umbrella, but it all goes to Special Olympics Kansas," Soule said. "It all stays in the state and helps our athletes here locally and statewide."

The car will be at the stadium for the Panthers game against Smoky Valley.

"We're actually going to use the USD 309 car," Soule said. "We're going to be up at Nickerson for Nickerson's Senior Night."

Special Olympics fundraiser Friday

Beginning Oct. 16 and lasting through November, the City of Hutchinson Public Works Department will be working to complete the annual waterline flushing and fire hydrant maintenance program. 

Some areas may experience discolored or cloudy water during this time, but this will only be temporary, and the water is safe to use. Allow the water to run from a faucet without a strainer such as a bathtub faucet or outdoor spigot for several minutes and it will eventually return to a clear color.

Flushing waterlines is a normal, preventive maintenance procedure that helps improve water quality. Fire hydrants are operated, inspected, and maintained during the flushing process to ensure that all hydrants on the system are in good working condition.

Public Works Department personnel will be flushing Monday through Thursday from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from about 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in various parts of the city. Weather and emergency waterline break dependent schedules will be posted on the City’s social media pages. If the discoloration lasts longer than a few hours or you have any questions, please contact the Water Department at (620) 694-1900.

Flushing is done to ensure the hydrants operate properly. Like most water valves, fire hydrants need to be exercised periodically. The water-distribution system is also flushed to remove settled particles such as iron and sediment accumulation in the waterlines. This helps to reduce discolored water in the system.

Should I use the water during hydrant testing in my neighborhood?

You may experience discolored water during and immediately following hydrant testing in your neighborhood. If the system is stirred up when you use water in your home, you could draw the discoloration into your internal plumbing causing discoloration at your faucets, etc. Public Works Department recommends trying not to use the water at all when flushing is occurring on your street and limit activities that cause the greatest discoloration concern such as doing laundry on all dates that the system is flushed.

I did my laundry during the system flush and now it is stained, what do I do?

If the clothes in your washer are stained, do not dry them. Rewash the load when the water is clear. Some customers have used iron removal products in their wash to remove staining. Iron stain removal products can be found in the detergent aisle at most grocery stores.

Can I landscape around the fire hydrant in my yard?

The City's ordinance states that no landscaping or screening shall be installed in a manner that might impede access by the Fire Department. No tree shall be planted within a distance of ten feet from any fire hydrant. Consideration should be given to plant species that, upon reaching maturity, may block connections.

Waterline flushing underway

Fall harvest is in full swing on our central Kansas farm.&nbsp;

Despite the smattering of golden triangles fluttering in my yard, there’s still plenty of green leaves shimmering from the cottonwoods in my neighborhood. Normally by mid-October these giant trees have shed the majority of their leaves and the ones left have turned a pale yellow. Of course, aside from narrowly missing our first frost, there haven’t been too many days that have felt like fall recently.

Soon enough though, the cottonwoods and other trees will turn color and drop their leaves. I’ll have to get out the rake to clean up the yard and dust off the ladder to unclog gutters. Despite its late appearance, fall is coming and so is the work it brings.

This realization hit me recently because another fall tradition managed to sneak up on me: local elections. Somehow advance voting starts this week. It seems like the candidate filing deadline was just yesterday, but Election Day on Nov. 7 is almost here.

I know these local contests that determine who will serve on school boards and fill city council seats don’t garner the attention of state and federal elections. Despite the lack of a spotlight, these races are more important to your daily life than any other elected position.

Local officials decide what roads get built and fixed, how money is spent for schools, what types of buildings can be built (and where they can be built) and how to support local businesses and incentivize growth.

The reason most of these decisions are made at the local level is because you know your community better than anyone else. That’s why it’s a vital need to pay attention to who is running and give your support to candidates who understand the challenges facing your community.

Voting in any election is a crucial part of upholding your civic duty, but casting a ballot is the easy part. Your primary job is to identify the candidates who can best represent your beliefs. Sometimes it’s not difficult to find those candidates, while in some races you have to do your research.

Either way, those who volunteer for these unpaid positions deserve our gratitude. They’re signing up for the thankless job of spending their evenings making decisions for the entire community, often with few people in the audience, which is why your civic duty doesn’t end on Election Day.

You don’t have to attend every meeting, but if you run into a school board member at the grocery store or see your city commissioner in church every Sunday, it’s good to have a short talk with them about what’s happening in your community. It’s OK to voice your opinion on current events and politely point out areas where you may disagree. You may not change their mind after one talk, but it might help them better understand your point of view.

Like raking leaves and cleaning gutters, there’s plenty of traditions to tend to as we enter the heart of fall. Be sure you add casting a ballot to the list sometime between now and Nov. 7. After all, regardless of who wins, they’ll surely be making decisions that affect you.

RENO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30 a.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Sterling semi driven by John Arlen Mast, 44, Hutchinson, was eastbound on Kansas 96 approximately 6 miles southeast of South Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The semi struck the left front of an eastbound Massey Ferguson MF240 driven by Samuel Eugene&nbsp;Bontrager, 44, Hutchinson, who had changed lanes in an attempt to turn north onto Halstead Street. 

EMS transported Bontrager to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Mast was properly restrained and not injured, according to the KHP. There was not seat belt on the tractor.

Hutchinson man hospitalized after semi, farm tractor crash

NEWTON, Kan. — A Newton woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder and other charges Friday evening after a disturbance in the 300 block of East Second Street.

Newton Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at around 10 p.m. Friday. During the investigation, officers determined that a man and a woman had a physical fight culminating with the woman attempting to run over the man with a vehicle. The man also had injuries consistent with being struck in the head with an object.

The woman had left the residence prior to officers’ arrival and was located at a secondary location a short time later. Kayla Osborn, 31, of Newton, was arrested on preliminary charges of attempted second-degree murder, domestic battery, possession of methamphetamine, criminal damage, DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Newton woman arrested on attempted murder charges

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements said work on the new Hilton Garden Inn will start soon.

"I had a wonderful and great meeting with the developer," Clements said. "We want to make sure, we have conference calls with the city workers and with his development team to make sure that we're moving the project forward. We're very focused. You can ask anyone on our team. They are very aware of the priority this is. We are hoping and believe that the shovels will hit the ground Oct. 30."

This starts the clock on a project that will be done in early 2025.

"We know that we have to get this project open and ready by February of 2025," Clements said. "We're also excited, there will be an Old Chicago in that restaurant, with a conference center."

There are 20 full-time and 40 part-time jobs projected, with 40,000 to 59,000 visitors per year.

Hotel groundbreaking should be this month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital wants pet owners to be sure to keep their pets active to help them stay healthy.

"Something like 60% of cats are overweight and 50% of dogs are overweight," Miller said. "I see those statistics and it blows my mind. Over 50% of both populations of pets."

Miller does see heavier pets in her practice, too.

"I see it in practice every day," Miller said. "My favorite is when I have patients come in and they are like a healthy, athletic weight and they are like, all of my friends and my family are saying they are too thin and they are so skinny. Do not change a thing. We're so used to seeing overweight pets, that's the normal for us. When we see healthy, athletic pets, we think they are too skinny. That's not the case."

"One of our staff members is going to be doing a little presentation on bourbon," Smith said. "He's kind of like an expert at it. We're going to have our telescopes outside to do some observing, weather permitted. We have our live auction that we're going to be doing to give away some amazing trips. We have our silent auction that has trips, and all sorts of items that you can bid on and you don't have to be on site to bid. Hutchinson Government Employees Credit Union holding event Friday

RENO COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp; According to a post from Reno County Emergency Management, firefighters from the 8 rural Reno County fire districts, South Hutch, and Hutchinson Fire Departments attended quarterly countywide training Saturday morning. This quarter's topic was basic vehicle extrication. 

Crews were able to practice with different types of rescue tools and were taught several different techniques to use in real life situations. A big thank you to Silas Enterprises for donating their lot and 4 cars for crews to cut up and practice on. 

Another big thank you to Rescue Specialists from Salina for sending a rep out with a trailer full of demo tools for firefighters to try and test for possible future purchases.&nbsp;

BUHLER and MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — Mid-Kansas Credit Union is providing free lunch for their members on International Credit Union Day, Thursday, Oct. 19.

Hot dogs or brats with chips, cookies and a bottle of water will be available at both their Buhler and Moundridge branches from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that day.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index decreased half of a point in September to 90.8.

"That's the 21st consecutive month below the 49-year average of 98," said Dan Murray with NFIB Kansas. "Twenty-three percent of owners reported that inflation was their single most important problem in operating their business. That's unchanged from last month and it continues to be tied with labor quality and labor shortage as small business owners top concern."

NFIB-Kansas members see inflation as sticking around.

"One of the key findings from this most recent optimism index is that small business owners expecting better conditions over the next six months deteriorated over six points from this past August," Murray said.

"Certainly, the pressure of inflation and the labor shortage are showing no signs of easing," Murray said. "Sales are starting to slow among the retail sector. We obviously hope as we head into the holiday season that this picks up a little bit. I think unease is the word I would characterize for many small business owners in Kansas."

Survey respondents are randomly drawn from NFIB’s membership.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If you’re looking for a job or even a career change, then an event happening Tuesday at the Uptown Hutch Mall is for you. It's the twice a year Soar Hire Job Fair and it runs from noon to 6:00 p.m. in the food court area of the mall.

"We are actually giving out some incentives just for people to show up to the job fair on Tuesday," said Ashley Weve with EAGLE Media. "We have a deal where they can go around and fill out some information, make sure that they stop by the vendor booths and then bring that information back to us and then put their name in for a drawing and we're going to give away two $50 VISA gift cards, just for attending the event."

Participants are asked to bring a résumé and dress appropriately for a job interview. In addition, Hutch Post has launched an all the time Jobs page if people are looking for workers between job fairs.

"The job fair is a great opportunity, but that only comes around twice a year," Weve said. Soar Hire Job Fair Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — October is Energy Awareness Month. Erynne Farney with SCKEDD explains their weatherization program.

"We're going to go in and help things to function more efficiently," Farney said. "Tighten up the home so that the cool air stays in, the heat air stays in when it's needed, so that it's just overall more efficient."

Income-eligible families receive a free comprehensive home energy audit. SCKEDD's certified energy auditor will search the entire home, inside and out, for inefficiencies and safety concerns.

"Right now, we're looking at about 20 to 30% annual savings after we do the upgrades for the home," Farney said. "That's obviously the average over all the homes we serve, but that's pretty significant."

Services may include weatherstripping, caulking around doors and windows, cleaning, testing, repairs, or replacement of appliances, heating, and/or cooling systems, adding insulation to walls, ceilings, and foundations, infiltration reduction, lighting and ventilation upgrades.

"We don't have any issues with running out of funding," Farney said. "Occasionally, we will have additional funding that will come in, sometimes, Kansas Gas has provided some for the entire state and they divide it among the four organizations that handle weatherization in Kansas."

SCKEDD: Weatherization saves energy, money

Clarification: The dates for the submission of the initial essays for the Civics Bee are later than originally reported.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Debra Teufel with the Hutchinson-Reno County Chamber of Commerce wants to let sixth, seventh and eighth graders know that there is a chance for them to win some money by showing what they know about civics through the National Civics Bee.

"That bee was held last year in Washington, D.C.," Teufel said. "It's a great opportunity for students to show their knowledge of local civics. We were interested in learning more about it. Obviously, we're honored to be asked to be one of the Chambers of Commerce in Kansas to be a host. It's going to be a competition, not just for local kids, but students from across the state of Kansas that want to be part of the Hutchinson competition."

Students in grades six, seven, and eight take part in the competition by submitting a 5oo-word essay. Submissions will begin in November and end January 8. 

"What we would love is folks from the community that would like to be judges," Teufel said. "Because we expect there to be quite a few essays to judge, we will have a panel of judges that judge those and select those that will move on to that local competition of the 20 top students."

The top 20 students will take part in a live quiz at Stringer Fine Arts Center on the Hutchinson Community College campus on April 17.

"We will have a first prize of $500, the second prize $250 and the third prize, $125. That is just the start. That is some of the support that we received from the grant to be able to put on this local event."

The statewide event will have a $1000 prize and the national winner will get $50,000.

McPherson County departments fighting landfill fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — American Legion Auxiliary National President Lisa Williamson visited American Legion Lysle Rishel Post 68 in Hutchinson Friday morning.&nbsp; The role of national auxiliary president is to  lead the American Legion Auxiliary and its programs.

"I am traveling throughout the country," said Williamson. "I will be traveling 310 days this year. Only 50 days home and so the auxilary members from Kansas are doing mostly it looks like Eastern Kansas so I landed in Kansas City. We were in Wichita, Topeka and now we are heading all across."

Williamson said she has been in office for a little over a month. She is originally from Alaska and her membership to the auxiliary stems from her son Kyle, who serves in the Alaska Air Guard. Her adoptive father and step-dad also served in the military.

While in Kansas, Williamson had the chance to visit the Harry W. Colmery Plaza which is one block from the State Capitol Building in Topeka.&nbsp;

 The memorial honors Colmery and his successful effort to author the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 which is referred to as the G.I. Bill of Rights. The bill helped the middle class access higher education and home loans for families of those in combat.&nbsp;

"He actually credits the auxiliary for making that happen because you know back in the day it wasn't as easy as picking up a phone it was a lot of letter writing and so he credits the auxiliary as being an integral part of getting those bills passed," Williamson said.&nbsp;

Each year, the national president has the opportunity to lead the auxiliary in an area of focus for the organization. Williamson said at least according to historical documents, all three legions will focus on the same topic for the first time.&nbsp;

 The legions chose to focus on increasing awareness for the veteran and military suicide epidemic. The focus is titled "Be the One to Save One."&nbsp;

"So it's kind of like allowing that service member or that veteran to let them know it's okay to not be okay and to reach out for help because that's the thing you know they've been told and ingrained in them to soldier on, to suck it up," Williamson said. "Sometimes you just have things in your head that you need to get out and that's what we are trying to do and so it's all about being the one and that's our big focus this year."&nbsp;

The American Legion Auxiliary was formed in 1919. Members of the auxiliary must be a direct relative or female descendant of a member of the American Legion.

They may also be related to a male or female who served in active duty&nbsp;and died in the line of duty or was honorably discharged anytime from April 6, 1917 - Nov. 11, 1918 and after Dec. 7, 1941.&nbsp; Williamson said male spouse of a female in the military is also be eligible.&nbsp;
