HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The chaplains for law enforcement and the fire department in Hutchinson are going to feed those they serve on Thanksgiving. 

Chaplain Richard Haley told Hutch Post they will be serving at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. for 97 first responders. They can dine in at the Father's House at 1505 East 20th or pick up a meal to go.&nbsp;

They are able to do this thanks to food from Village Inn in Hutchinson and funds provided by Elliott Mortuary and Hutchinson Funeral Chapel.

This is the second year for the chaplains to provide this service. They were also able to do it on Christmas in 2022.

If responders have any questions, or to reserve a meal, they can call Chaplain Adam Wooten at (620) 960-3704.

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Kidron Bethel Village is reintroducing its annual holiday community event, Holiday Market, on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Kidron Hall, 3001 Ivy Dr, North Newton. Admission is free.

The event, featuring more than 20 local artisans selling handmade items, gifts and baked goods, is an opportunity for the community to buy holiday gifts, treats and décor from area vendors. It is hosted by the Friends of Kidron group in support of the Kidron Bethel Village Health Care Benevolent Fund. The benevolent fund assists residents who, due to unforeseen circumstances, are unable to cover the full cost of their care.

The 2023 Holiday Market is a comeback for the event last held in 2019. The event was paused over the last few years due to COVID-19 precautions and campus construction.

“We are excited to bring back this event that had become a holiday staple for the Kidron Bethel Village and wider communities,” said Shelley Lujano, Bluestem Communities Community Outreach Coordinator. “It will be a great opportunity to shop for holiday gifts and support local artisans.”

Kidron Bethel Village to host community holiday shopping event

We are well on our way into the holiday season. Although, if you have been in any retail store or coffee shop, we have been in the holiday season since roughly Aug. 15. I have to admit I am a sucker for this time of the year. &nbsp;I suspect this is the case for many of us, and the holidays are highly anticipated and much enjoyed.

But not everyone looks forward to the holiday season. This is also a time of the year that can be hard for many from a mental health state. There is a lot of pressure this time of the year. This is especially true for those of us in agriculture. It is also the end of the year and for many of us this has been a difficult year in multiple ways. Drought and financial pressure can take its toll and the hustle, bustle and high expectations of the holiday season can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Couple that with the stiff upper lip, keep-it-all-inside mentality of farmers and ranchers, the holidays can be a very difficult, trying time. I am sure many of us have been there, it is a hard, lonely road to go down, but it doesn’t have to be that way. The other thing about farmers and ranchers is that we are a tight-knit community, and we will go out of our way to help a neighbor. Mental health is no different.

It is simple for us to know what to do but very difficult to actually reach out to someone in trouble. Often neighbors and friends are the first to notice. Someone experiencing a mental health crisis might be withdrawn, quieter than normal and avoid activities and events they normally attend. The signs are not always easy to see but as a friend or neighbor you will know when things aren’t “right.”

It is incredibly difficult to take the next step and urge someone to seek help and even more difficult to intervene on their behalf and get them help. I know it is not comfortable, but the consequences of ignoring signs of distress are even worse. We have to work together to end the stigma of seeking mental health care; it is just as important as taking care of ourselves physically.

I also encourage anyone struggling with added stress during the holidays to type in Rural Minds Matter into any search bar to bring up a list of resources. If you or a loved one is experiencing an acute crisis, dial 988. It’s a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress.

During this time of holiday cheer and the rush of the season, please take time to check in on friends and neighbors, especially if you have not seen them in a few days. Really talk to them and listen to what they are saying. If you are reading this and in mental distress, please seek help; it is not a sign of weakness but rather one of great awareness. I hope everyone will be able to enjoy this season of time with friends and family, just remember, the greatest gift you can give is the one of caring and kindness.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas woman is going to prison in connection with the death of a man who fell from the hood of a stolen car.

On Friday, a judge sentenced 37-year-old Ashley Corley of Hutchinson&nbsp; to nearly 18-years in prison for the incident involving a stolen vehicle that took the life of 41-year-old Rigoberto Rivas, according to the Sedgwick County District attorney's office.

In October of 2022, police responded to 9th Street North and St. Paul in Wichita where they found Rivas in the street. He had head injuries and died at a local hospital, according to Officer Chad Ditch.&nbsp;

Investigators learned that Rivas and Corley were seen running toward a gray car parked on the curb at 9th Street. Corley allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed with Rivas on the hood. The car swerved and Rivas fell from the car.

A follow-up investigation led officers to believe the car was stolen.

Police investigators arrested Corley in Hutchison, transported her back to Wichita and booked her into the Sedgwick County Jail.

Hutch woman sentenced for death of man who fell from hood of a car

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — 2023 is the 30th anniversary of KWBW's Project Concern, the annual assistance program where with the help of listeners, the Salvation Army and Dillons, KWBW helps make Thanksgiving better for those in need in Hutchinson and Reno County.

It was a fabulous success this year, with $21,500 raised. Major D.J. James said 720 families applied and are eligible for assistance this year. 2,650 people will get help thanks to BW listeners, and especially one, in particular.

"We had a listener on Friday write us a check for $10,000," said KWBW Program Director Rob Dreher. "We had four listeners give checks of $500 or more, we had two $1000 checks."

The majority were smaller gifts of $20, $50 or $100. Seventy-five percent of all the money brought in goes to the Salvation Army. The other 25% is split between the Christian Soup Ministry and Friendship Meals. The Salvation Army will receive over $16,000 in gift cards from Dillons. Dillons is always gracious in stretching those dollars as far as possible. Christian Soup Ministry and Friendship Meals will each get about $2650.

"I can't say thank you enough," Dreher said. "From our staff here at BW Radio, we are so thankful for our awesome listeners who are going to make this 30th Anniversary of Project Concern the best ever. Thank you!"

Project Concern with over $21K in gifts in 2023

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 is going forward with work on its school buildings after passing a&nbsp;9 year, $7.6 million bond this past spring.

"The science classrooms are about 90% complete," said USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale. "Students are back in those classrooms now with all updated furnishings and equipment and everything else. There's just some minor things, the hallways need to be re-floored and some of that stuff, but the science rooms are completed."

The engineers are working on the drawings for the rest of the projects.

"The architects are currently designing those buildings," Nightingale said. "We're going to see those space designs after we come back from the first of the year and begin that process of the board approving those designs and then they'll be securing materials and that will give us a time frame based on how far out the material delivery will be, when they can begin renovation and then start work."

As the district continues its strategic planning process, it is making every effort to get buy in from as many parents and community members as it can.

"We're doing our best to reach out to make sure every voice is being heard," Nightingale said. "We're trying to do the best we can to get people involved. It goes back to, it's awful difficult to tear down a culture that you helped create. By getting those voices heard and getting those people to the table and having a conversation, at least they can't say no one consulted them or they weren't asked."

The USD 309 Board of Education held a special meeting with its consultant from KASB on the strategic plan on Nov. 14.

USD 309 bond projects, strategic plan continue to take shape

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new grant program will infuse $90,000 into the community to support the health and well-being of Reno County residents over the next three years.Community Health Improvement Grants are funded through a partnership between Hutchinson Community Foundation, Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation and United Way of Reno County to help Reno County communities and partners make progress on the goals outlined in the 2023 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP).

"These grants are for the purpose of implementing the Community Health Improvement Plan, which the community has to do every three years," said Kari Mailloux with the Hutchinson Community Foundation. "The health department and the hospital have to do it for accreditation. It's never had funding behind it before. The top four priorities are substance use, mental health, access to care and child care."

Since this is new funding, the hope is to be able to try some innovative ideas that just need a little push to get started.

"Some of the ideas on the table in the CHIP are adding a therapist in every school in Reno County to help address mental health," Mailloux said. "Experimenting with satellite clinics along the access to care line. Meeting people where they are, rather than expecting them to come to clinics. The child care strategy is really partnering with the Reno County Childcare Task Force in the strategies they are taking to help change the system and create more access to care."

Awards are expected to typically range from $1,000 to $10,000 for single-year or multi-year funding. Proposals will be reviewed and awarded by a joint selection committee of board members from the three funding partners.

"Hutchinson Community Foundation is hosting the grant applications on our website," Mailloux said. "If people would go to <a href="https://hutchcf.org/">hutchcf.org</a>, there is a link to all the grant guidelines and the grant application. Those grants are due Dec. 1."

Any 501(c)(3) organization or special purpose unit of government may apply.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new grant program will infuse $90,000 into the community to support the health and well-being of Reno County residents over the next three years.Community Health Improvement Grants are funded through a partnership between Hutchinson Community Foundation, Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation and United Way of Reno County to help Reno County communities and partners make progress on the goals outlined in the 2023 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP)."These grants are for the purpose of implementing the Community Health Improvement Plan, which the community has to do every three years," said Kari Mailloux with the Hutchinson Community Foundation. "The health department and the hospital have to do it for accreditation. It's never had funding behind it before. The top four priorities are substance use, mental health, access to care and child care."Since this is new funding, the hope is to be able to try some innovative ideas that just need a little push to get started."Some of the ideas on the table in the CHIP are adding a therapist in every school in Reno County to help address mental health," Mailloux said. "Experimenting with satellite clinics along the access to care line. Meeting people where they are, rather than expecting them to come to clinics. The child care strategy is really partnering with the Reno County Childcare Task Force in the strategies they are taking to help change the system and create more access to care."Awards are expected to typically range from $1,000 to $10,000 for single-year or multi-year funding. Proposals will be reviewed and awarded by a joint selection committee of board members from the three funding partners."Hutchinson Community Foundation is hosting the grant applications on our website," Mailloux said. First time money is behind community health improvement in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 13th annual "Stuff the Trucks" event for Midwest Superstore, Country 102.9 and My 93-1 was held Saturday, Nov. 11 at Walmart.&nbsp;

1,721 total pounds of non-perishable food items were collected at the Stuff the Trucks event, along with $3500 in monetary donations.

Community members bought non-perishable food items to fill the back of a truck.&nbsp;The non-perishables are donated to the Reno County Food Bank.&nbsp;Collected food items include canned goods, cereals and pastas. 

Midwest Superstore contributed two trucks that were placed at the front entrances of Walmart. 

In addition, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/b03c40d1-f08f-47cb-bad8-4ebae3e10784">the We'll Leave Our Lights on Food Drive with 20 Hutchinson area churches on Nov. 15</a> brought in 8,879 pounds of food.&nbsp;

Further, Reno County employees&nbsp;Reno County Cares' Thanksgiving Food Drive brought in 525 pounds of non-perishable food items and $670 in cash donations to the Reno County Food Bank Friday, Nov. 17th.

📷 Food Bank gets many donations in November

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Reno County Toy Run was held Sunday with 140 motorcycles braving the rainy weather to ride the Toy Run parade route and donate toys to allow the children of Reno County to have a great Christmas.

This year was the 40th anniversary of the Toy Run that began in 1983. 

Motorcycles lined up in front of Salty Cycles and rode up Main Street with the parade finishing at the Moose Lodge #982 with a Chili Feed and live auction. All toys and money donations benefit local charities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The main item is a routine renewal of the agreement with the Kansas State Historic Preservation Officer allowing the local Landmarks Commission to perform some functions according to statute without having to send them to Topeka.&nbsp;

The proposed agreement would be through 2028.

The Hutchinson City Council meets at 9 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Last year, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/christiansoupministry">Christian Soup Ministry</a> served 384 people at their annual Thanksgiving meal.&nbsp; This is the 38th year for the soup ministry to host the meal at Third and Elm.&nbsp;

The meal is on Wednesday, Nov. 22 from 11 a.m-1 p.m. Home deliveries for the meals will begin at 10 a.m.

Director Stanley Murdock said staff and volunteers started to prepare food for the meals at the start of this month.&nbsp;

"There's a lot of people that work behind the scenes to get the meal ready to go," Murdock said.

Murdock said there are multiple opportunities to volunteer on Wednesday which include serving and cooking the food. Volunteers for the meal range from those who have served several years and those who choose to serve for the first time.&nbsp;

"We don't have a big dining room here and we need people that are willing to run up and down the stairs with the food, and wait on the people and serve pies and rolls to the people and all those different kinds of things," Murdock said.&nbsp;

The full menu will include turkey, stuffing, green beans, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls and pie. Donations come from community members and organizations. The rolls and pie are donated by Dillons.&nbsp;

Stanley said the meal will be prepared for 500 people. At about 12:30 p.m., folks can take meals home with them if there are any leftovers.&nbsp;

"It started out with four turkeys and we are probably going to do about 25 this time," Murdock said. "We do it to feed the community."&nbsp;

Those who would like to have their meal delivered to them must make a reservation for it by Monday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.

As of Thursday, Nov. 16 the Christian Soup Ministry is still in need of more turkey, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce. Call (620)-662-6468 to donate food or receive a home delivered meal.&nbsp;

Christian Soup Ministry prepares for 38th annual Thanksgiving Meal

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For a third straight month, the overall Rural Mainstreet Index (RMI) sank below growth neutral, according to the November survey of bank CEOs in rural areas of a 10-state region dependent on agriculture and/or energy.

"We asked about looking forward for the next six months and the confidence index dropped to its lowest level since we began the survey in 2006," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss. "That was not a good reading. Hopefully, the economy is better than what the bank CEOs expect."

Goss has changed his position on whether or not the Federal Reserve will raise rates again.

"I projected a rate hike not more than a month ago," Goss said. "Now, I'm on the side of no rate hike. I won't say they are done, it's too early to say that, but it looks like there is a potential for a rate cut, but that's not going to come anytime soon. That would be no earlier than 2024. I don't expect that."

If you're looking at your portfolio and still feeling okay, Goss urges caution.

"The stock market's doing great, but the stock market is not the economy," Goss said. "By the way, the stock market is also being driven up by a few stocks. Most of the stocks in the Russell 2000 and the S&amp;P 500 are not doing that well."

Goss still believes that the federal government is spending as if it is in wartime in a peacetime economy, and he's not sure how long that can last.

Goss: Mind has changed on Dec. rate hike

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — November&nbsp;is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country seek to bring attention to diabetes.&nbsp;

"Risk factors would be those of us who have kind of gained weight over the years and have less physical activity," said Keri Shroyer, Diabetes Educator with the Hutchinson Clinic. "We have a higher risk as we age. Also, there are genetic components. The symptoms would be if you are more thirsty than normal, more tired than normal, having some blurred vision. There's both symptoms and risk factors that would prompt somebody to check with their doctor."

Diabetes affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth.

"We kind of stratify it," said&nbsp;Kathy Mailloux,&nbsp;Diabetes Educator with the Hutchinson Clinic. "If blood sugar is between 70 to 100, that would be considered normal fasting blood sugar. If the blood sugar is above 100, but below 125, that's where the patient is probably being told, well, your sugar's a little high. That's what we call that prediabetic. Once the fasting blood sugar is above 125 at least twice, that would be in the realm of diabetes."

Lifestyle habits such as planning healthy meals, being physically active, getting enough sleep, and not smoking may help you manage your diabetes.&nbsp;The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about your average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past 3 months.

"A1C basically measures the amount of glucose surrounding a red blood cell," Mailloux said. "Since our red blood cells are constantly being regenerated, if we do that test no sooner than three months, the red blood cells that are circulating in our system now, are pretty much gone by the end of that three month period, so we can get a fresh look or a fresh grade. People who don't have diabetes, their&nbsp;A1C would be somewhere in the range of about 5.4 or less. People who have that prediabetic state would be somewhere under 6.3 and for people who do have diabetes, our goal, again it's stratified by age, but typically if we can keep them under 7.0, and even better at 6.5 and under, we're in good shape."

Participants may enroll in the Diabetes Education program at the Hutchinson Clinic by obtaining a referral from their primary care provider or by self-referral.&nbsp;

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — November&nbsp;is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country seek to bring attention to diabetes.&nbsp;"Risk factors would be those of us who have kind of gained weight over the years and have less physical activity," said Keri Shroyer, Diabetes Educator with the Hutchinson Clinic. "We have a higher risk as we age. Also, there are genetic components. The symptoms would be if you are more thirsty than normal, more tired than normal, having some blurred vision. There's both symptoms and risk factors that would prompt somebody to check with their doctor."Diabetes affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth."We kind of stratify it," said&nbsp;Kathy Mailloux,&nbsp;Diabetes Educator with the Hutchinson Clinic. "If blood sugar is between 70 to 100, that would be considered normal fasting blood sugar. If the blood sugar is above 100, but below 125, that's where the patient is probably being told, well, your sugar's a little high. That's what we call that prediabetic. Once the fasting blood sugar is above 125 at least twice, that would be in the realm of diabetes."Lifestyle habits such as planning healthy meals, being physically active, getting enough sleep, and not smoking may help you manage your diabetes.&nbsp;The A1C test is a blood test that provides information about your average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past 3 months."A1C basically measures the amount of glucose surrounding a red blood cell," Mailloux said. "Since our red blood cells are constantly being regenerated, if we do that test no sooner than three months, the red blood cells that are circulating in our system now, are pretty much gone by the end of that three month period, so we can get a fresh look or a fresh grade. People who don't have diabetes, their&nbsp;A1C would be somewhere in the range of about 5.4 or less. People who have that prediabetic state would be somewhere under 6.3 and for people who do have diabetes, our goal, again it's stratified by age, but typically if we can keep them under 7.0, and even better at 6.5 and under, we're in good shape."Participants may enroll in the Diabetes Education program at the Hutchinson Clinic by obtaining a referral from their primary care provider or by self-referral.&nbsp;Editor's Note: Some information is provided by&nbsp;

Diabetes Month is a good time to check with your doctor

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — AAA says 55.4 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period from the five-day period from Wednesday, November 22 to Sunday, November 26.

"That's an increase of 2.3% over last year," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "The number of people driving will also be up slightly with a 1.7% increase to 49.1 million Americans driving to their destinations."

This year’s Thanksgiving the third-highest Thanksgiving forecast since AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2000. The top two years were 2005 and 2019, respectively.&nbsp;

"People will also be flying," Steward said. "4.7 million people will fly over the Thanksgiving holiday. That's up 6.6% compared to last year."

That's the highest number of Thanksgiving air travelers since 2005. Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving are the busiest air travel days ahead of the holiday and the most expensive.

"All methods of transportation are up, especially domestic travel," Steward said. "The average cost of flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises are all down here in the U.S. this holiday season."

Drivers in this part of the country will likely be paying less for gas than last Thanksgiving, as well, when the national average was $3.58. This year, the national average peaked in mid-August at $3.87 and has been coming down since, despite global tensions causing ripples through the oil market. The Kansas gas price average is $3.03 a gallon as of Saturday, Nov. 18.&nbsp;

AAA: Third busiest Thanksgiving travel season in 20 years

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — NFIB is celebrating 50 years of the Small Business Economic Trends survey, but small business owners are not feeling optimistic in the current economic environment.

"October remained similar to the September numbers," said Dan Murray with NFIB Kansas. "The optimism index decreased to 90.7. That optimism index is a composite of various factors that small business owners are asked about and consider. That marks the 22nd month below the 50 year average."

The last time the index was at or above the average was December of 2021.

"We're hopeful that we'll turn the corner on this inflation problem," Murray said. "We don't see that happening anytime soon, as in the next handful of months, but I know that small business owners will keep their nose to the grindstone and will continue to do what they can to keep their businesses open and running successfully."

The inability to find good help is also going to have an impact on the Christmas season on Main Street.

"As we approach the busy shopping season heading into Christmas, this is the most important time for many of our small retailers," Murray said. "They are going to do more. They are going to put more on their backs and it's going to be some long, difficult hours. Certainly, getting out and supporting those small business owners is something that we can do to keep those businesses alive and thriving in our communities throughout Kansas."

The NFIB Research Center has collected Small Business Economic Trends data with quarterly surveys since the fourth quarter of 1973.&nbsp;

NFIB: Optimism fairly low in 50th anniversary survey

BUSHTON, Kan.&nbsp;— Do your children or grandchildren want to see Santa and take a ride in his sleigh? They can! Do you want to take them on a horse-drawn wagon-ride? You can! Do you want to do some fun and relaxed Christmas shopping? You can! You and they can enjoy all of that and more in just one day at the annual Bushton Pride Committee’s Santa’s Bazaar in Bushton on Saturday, December 2.

The day’s festivities, which have been expanded this year, will feature a virtual reality Santa’s sleigh ride and an appearance by Santa, plus horse-drawn wagon rides, an arts and crafts show with over 25 vendors, a soup contest, face painting, a raffle, a children’s activity corner, a do-it-yourself Christmas photo booth, and concessions.

With more activities than ever before, the event will take place in two locations – the Bushton Community Center and the Bushton Plaza (the former Central Plains Middle School). The event’s activities will run at various times between 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Kicking off the day’s events will be the magical virtual reality ride in Santa’s sleigh, sure to get one and all in the Christmas spirit. Rides will be available, free of charge, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Bushton Plaza.

Arts and crafts vendors will include unique handmade items such as homemade baked goods, handmade soap, homemade home décor and jewelry, handcrafted wood products, books, and puzzles as well as other new and exciting items. The arts and crafts booths will be open from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at both locations.

The Christmas Kids Corner will run from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the Plaza and will feature cookie decorating and crafting activities.

Horse-drawn wagon rides will be available from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., running between the Plaza and the Community Center.

Santa Claus will be making his appearance and handing out goodie sacks from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Plaza.

The soup contest is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Community Center, with three categories – chili, chicken noodle and “other.” A soup tasting kit can be purchased for $5.00.

The Bazaar’s raffle, with over 75 prizes, will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Community Center. Tickets will be available for purchase at both venues.

There will be face painting and a do-it-yourself Christmas photo booth at the Plaza throughout the day and Crazy Wolf Coffee of Ellinwood will be at the Plaza from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. offering specialty coffees.

In addition, Pride will be selling t-shirts, and concessions, provided by the Traveling Oilers, will be available throughout the day at the Community Center.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Lori Tracy, a four-year-old classroom teacher in the Pre-K program at Faris Elementary, is this month's Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month.

"I took a break last year and taught Kindergarten and then came back," Tracy said. "Because I missed it. I missed the little four-year-olds."

Tracy really finds it rewarding to teach the little ones for whom school is still new and still a place they want to be.

"I feel like they are just so naturally motivated to learn," Tracy said. "They just come in with so much energy and we kind of take that energy and we use it to kind of fuel our day in a positive way. I don't think you get that with every age group. I think there's something special about these little ones. They are just so happy to be here and they love you and little things that we do are so special to them."

When you can establish a structure within a classroom, that's when it really starts to be enjoyable, according to Tracy.

"In August, we're just learning how to come to school," Tracy said. "This time of year, we're three months in and they are so solid with our routine and my expectations. This is when it's really fun. It's so much more rewarding, I think, now, because I can see the work that we've done kind of come into play and so I can give two kids an activity to do and they can work together. They can work through it. They can solve problems a little more independently, because we've been working on it the past three months. This is really a fun time of year. They are blossoming."

Craig Johnson nominated Tracy, saying, "It is an honor long overdue."

Tracy's class was treated to a special pizza and ice cream party thanks to Braums and Pizza Hut on Friday, Nov. 17.

Teacher of the Month: 'Something special' about four-year-olds

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thursday night, the NAACP Hutchinson and SW Bricktown Neighborhood hosted a police forum with Police Chief Brice Burlie of the Hutchinson Police Department and other department personnel. Members of the public came to listen and talk with a panel of four officers in administrative positions.&nbsp;

Topics discussed included community interaction goals for the department, the importance of being a good crime witness, prevention of local drug crimes, mental health safety and handling of the department budget.&nbsp;

Chief Burlie, who was promoted to the permanent position in early August, said he enjoys public forums with the community. Throughout the evening, common themes of doing the job with integrity were discussed. Burlie told the audience integrity, professionalism and honesty are the Hutchinson Police Department's core values.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"We all know what those things mean but in our field. "We have to live that 24/7 right," Burlie said at the forum. "We can't just come in in uniform, and be professional and be honest and have high levels of integrity. Even when we take the uniform off and we go home, we are out in public or we are with our wives or with our kids, you still have to hold yourself to that high expectation. It goes without saying that the reason for that is because if we want the community to fully entrust in us, how are we ever going to expect the community to trust us if we don't act right when we're outside the job."

&nbsp;Burlie, Operations Officer Dustin Loepp, Professional Standards Captain Dayton Gates and Administrative Captain Michael Collins were all present for the discussion.&nbsp;

 </figure>EMMIE BOESE Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thursday night, the NAACP Hutchinson and SW Bricktown Neighborhood hosted a police forum with Police Chief Brice Burlie of the Hutchinson Police Department and other department personnel. Members of the public came to listen and talk with a panel of four officers in administrative positions.&nbsp;Topics discussed included community interaction goals for the department, the importance of being a good crime witness, prevention of local drug crimes, mental health safety and handling of the department budget.&nbsp;Chief Burlie, who was promoted to the permanent position in early August, said he enjoys public forums with the community. Throughout the evening, common themes of doing the job with integrity were discussed. Burlie told the audience integrity, professionalism and honesty are the Hutchinson Police Department's core values.&nbsp;&nbsp;"We all know what those things mean but in our field. "We have to live that 24/7 right," Burlie said at the forum. "We can't just come in in uniform, and be professional and be honest and have high levels of integrity. Even when we take the uniform off and we go home, we are out in public or we are with our wives or with our kids, you still have to hold yourself to that high expectation. Hutchinson police hear from public Thursday

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Three Bethany College students were selected as semi-finalists this month at the National Association of Teachers of Singing West Central Regional Conference (NATS) in Kearney, Neb. Gracie Gaskill, a senior Chemistry and Music Major from Lindsborg, Kan., Keeley Tubbs, a Sophomore Music Major from Lindsborg, Kan., and Coleson Reinecker, a Freshman Music Education Major from Inman, Kan., were all selected for the semi-finals after each receiving scores of more than 90 points during the preliminary round.

Gracie Gaskill, a senior Chemistry and Music Major from Lindsborg, Kan., Keeley Tubbs, a Sophomore Music Major from Lindsborg, Kan., and Coleson Reinecker, a Freshman Music Education Major from Inman, Kan., were all selected for the semi-finals after each receiving scores of more than 90 points during the preliminary round.Also in attendance at NATS were Tony Robb, a senior Music Major from Westmoreland, Kan.; Aubrey Larson, a senior Music Education major from Russell, Kan.; Riley Nickel, a freshman Music Performance major from Colwich, Kan.; Caleb Reazin, a senior Biology and Chemistry major from Eudora, Kan.; Treyton Sutton a sophomore History and Political Science major from Assaria, Kan.; Ella McNett a freshman General Studies major from Larned, Kan. Students were accompanied by Lesile Mangrum, Assistant Professor of Music, Tyler Boehmer, Visiting Assistant of Music and College Organist, and Glenna Balsick, Accompanist.The preliminary rounds were held on November 3 at the University of Nebraska in Kearney and required each participant to perform three to four pieces. Each Bethany student competed in the classical division. Gaskill and Larson also competed in the Music Theatre division.In addition to competing in the auditions, the students attended master classes taught by actor Stephen Wallem from Nurse Jackie and The Resident and Paul Houghtaling, opera director at the University of Alabama.Bethany College is online at <a href="http://www.bethanylb.edu">bethanylb.edu</a>.
