RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Reno County 911 posted on social media Tuesday that there will be several railroad crossings across the county that will not be activated due to K&amp;O RR doing maintenance on the crossings. 

Please use caution when using these railroad crossings and look both ways for trains in the area since the signals will not be functional. 

The railroad advised that they would be down most of the day.

Take care at railroad crossings Tuesday

David Sotelo of Hutchinson was selected for a worldwide opportunity through his work with the United Way of Reno County. He attended the 2023 One Young World Summit representing United Way in Northern Ireland Oct. 2-5.

"There is, I think, more than 180 countries present representing all parts of the globe," Sotelo said. "There's plenty of people from the U.S. I was one of the five United Way delegates that was there. Climate crisis, mental health and food insecurity were some of the big topics that we were discussing over five days."

Having a truly global perspective on issues shows that regardless of governmental system, people want to be able to live in peace and eat and sleep and recreate and live, no matter where they are from.

"Our struggles are not a competition," Sotelo said. "That a kid is going hungry in some classroom in one of our schools in Reno County and that a kid is going hungry somewhere in central Africa, their struggle is no different, and not more important than the other, because at the core of it is this human person that is hungry."

Sotelo sees it as important to fit the solution to the place where the problem is. One example is the greater variability in weather conditions that the world is seeing in recent years.

"How does that impact people in our community?," asked Sotelo. "What does that look like for Reno County? Folks that can't afford to pay their electric bill. How are they going to survive 105, 106 degree summers for the next 10 to 20 years? Something that I think folks in the rooms that I was in were talking about that I think folks in Reno County might understand a little bit better is this really big focus, I welcome that focus and I welcome discussions about this focus, on electric cars as a solution. What we were saying in those rooms is, what about other solutions? Why is that the thing that governments and the market are spending a lot of time and focus on, electric vehicles? What about other alternatives that we can use to address the climate crisis?"

Another issue the summit attempted to touch on was the need for mental health support and that it is just as important as physical health support.

"One of the things that we have to understand is that there's nothing wrong with this," Sotelo said. "There are things that we can work on. Just having grace with ourselves, giving ourselves some grace, but just being there for each other in our mental health struggles."

Sotelo is now a&nbsp;One Young World Ambassador. Since&nbsp;2010, One Young World Ambassador projects have impacted the lives of over 41.56 million people.

Sotelo tells of One Young World Summit experience

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — My 93-1 and Rise Up Reno hosted their 14th annual Pumpkinaries at the Eagle Media Center Monday night.&nbsp;

Pumpkinaries is a free event for the community. Live music, games and carnival-type food is served to those who attend.&nbsp;Morgan Wilk, Colton Gartleman and Katie Ziegler played live music and  My 93-1's Daren Dunn broadcasted live outside the EAGLE Media Studios at 825 N. Main in Hutchinson. 

Executive Director Carla Smith of Rise Up Reno said she felt like this year's event had a great turnout despite the cold weather.&nbsp;

"All evening long we've had a line for food and line for games and lines for all the activities," Smith said.&nbsp;

Pumpkinaries is a youth leadership event for Rise up Reno. The youth leadership team participates in activities throughout the year to raise awareness for substance abuse and bullying prevention.&nbsp;

"Teens love it," Smith said. "It's one of their favorite events of the year to get involved and do some things."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new group that is looking to help people get on their feet and find resources is having its open house on Wednesday at 1021 North Main, Suite D3. Shawna Logue is the Director of Hand Up Hutch.

"I've been a case manager for quite a while, but this particular thing, I had a friend that, when I was working at another place, he went with me, and he goes, you get paid to do this?" Logue said. "I was like, yeah. He was like, I wish I could do this. I said, why couldn't you? Because I have a rap sheet. I was like, I repeat, why can't you? He goes, I repeat, I got a rap sheet. I said, well, you can't work at DCF, but you could be a case manager. You can do things to help the community. I thought, if he doesn't realize this, I'm sure there's others that don't realize this. A lot of people don't realize how much education is actually free."

A case manager will work with new clients to identify resource needs (such as food, shelter, employment, and healthcare) for a maximum of 90 days to understand needs and goals and remove roadblocks to that end. Board President Austin Mason is glad to be able to help and to tell others his story.

"Being released after 20 and a half years in prison, not having nothin, not having nobody out here, being able to give back to the community," Mason said. "The help that I've received, the help that I've gotten through this with Shawna has been a major, major playback for me to be able to show other people that, hey, you know, you're not the only ones out here. If you're struggling, there's people out here that's walked the same walk, if not worse walks, that can actually do it out here."

Upon successful accomplishment of goals, the case manager will check in on the client every 3-6 months to ensure continued success.&nbsp;After clients have achieved stability through Hand Up’s program - or through another similar program - they will be able to shadow a case manager for 3 months as part of the give-back component of Hand Up. Hand Up will work with probation and courts so this may qualify as community service.

"A lot of people get stuck in a rut," Logue said. "This is just to show that you can make a decision and change things. It also betters the community. When people can get better jobs, they're not committing crimes, they're not out doing drugs, they're paying their bills and paying their taxes and doing what they are supposed to."

Upon successful completion of the shadowing period Hand Up will identify a client career path such as social work or other opportunities and guide clients along their new career path. Hand Up Hutch to hold open house

It’s all downhill from here! While fall harvest continues on our central Kansas farm, the difference from harvesting the corn in August compared to beginning to harvest sorghum now is we can see the finish line ahead of us!

In all of my years on the farm, I know that the closer we get to Thanksgiving, the closer we are to wrapping up our fall farming requirements.&nbsp;I also know that we’re getting closer to the end of this season because all the wheat has now been sown.&nbsp;

It’s a great feeling to know that things on the farm we’ve put lower on the list of priorities will start getting some attention.&nbsp;

Soon, we’ll move equipment into the shop for the winter, spend some quality time deep cleaning the house and office, and I’ll begrudgingly tackle piles of laundry. The cattle will be moved to winter pasture, the ram will be turned out with the ewes, and the migratory birds will present their patterns in the sky above.

In all, for our operation, we’ll have much more flexibility in our days compared to what we’ve had over the last few months.

It’s during this relatively flexible season where we often attend more meetings, take trips out of town with the family, RSVP to weddings without hesitation, regularly attend school events and generally feel better about firmly committing to requests instead of taking the “I can do that if it rains” approach.

Simply put, once we reach that fall harvest and planting finish line, we can be more available. Available to our family. Available to our friends. Available to our communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One of the many areas that would absolutely welcome our availability is within our local schools. Schools are in desperate need of emergency substitutes. Whether it’s filling in for a classroom teacher, para educator, kitchen staff, office staff, or bus driver, schools need help from those who are available.&nbsp;

It’s a national issue that I know all too well having multiple family and friends working in public education. I also know the need because of what we are experiencing with our own children.Recently we were notified our school district was again consolidating bus routes because of a lack of regular drivers and substitute drivers available. Our school district communicated to us that it could take up to two and a half to three hours for some of our rural route kids to get home from school on consolidated routes.

You might not want to fully commit to driving a bus or being called whenever a substitute is needed for an entire school year. But in Kansas, there are allowances for emergency substitutes – both in the school building and transporting school kids.&nbsp;

For example, there is an allowance to waive a number of requirements to allow for emergency substitute bus drivers. The major catch is the emergency bus driver can drive no more than five days during a school year.&nbsp;

If you have your CDL, a quick trip to your local DMV to pass some written and skills-based tests to receive your “passenger” and “school bus” endorsements will likely make you available for your local school district as an emergency substitute bus driver.&nbsp;

If you can be available for five days during your slower season to help drive a bus of FFA students to an event, to get the choir students to a contest, to allow a class of students to experience a field trip, to transport a sports team to their game or to promptly get kiddos to or from school, please consider contacting your local school district or the Kansas State Department of Education’s School Bus Safety Unit to confirm you qualify.

Additionally, if you have your high school diploma, you’re likely eligible to help serve as a substitute within Kansas school buildings per temporary modifications for emergency substitute licensing.

Whether you can be available for a couple days to help out as an emergency substitute bus driver, or by helping in a school building, many of us in agriculture may be inching closer and closer to wrapping up fall activities on our operations.&nbsp;

As you get closer to your fall harvest finish line, consider reaching out to your local school district and see how your upcoming season of increased flexibility and availability can be of help to school staff and students during to your slower season on the farm.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The golden shovels were out on Monday in Hutchinson. The groundbreaking ceremony took place with the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, Amber Hotel LLC and many community leaders who helped make the new Hilton Garden Inn project at 1715 North Waldron happen.

"This 112 room hotel is going to help fill some of the void," said chamber CEO Debra Teufel. "We hope it proves out that it will be just the first step in new investment for Raju Sheth and his development teams."

Sheth is familiar with working in Hutchinson. He helped develop the Holiday Inn Express and Fairfield Inn projects previously.

"It was a lot of back and forth," Sheth said. "It takes time. As things have changed after COVID, the process has become very long. I would have really liked to break ground six months ago, but no engineering firm would make drawings for six or seven months. Then, all the approval process with the franchise. That takes a long time, but we are glad to be here. One of the biggest things that happened to make this project possible is the financing from the bank, the First National Bank."

Darrel Miller of First National Bank spoke about his memories of when he realized just how dire the hotel situation was in Hutchinson.

"I was in a meeting on the north side of town," Miller said. "I drove back to the bank and I drove down Lorraine Street and there were crews putting plywood on a building there on Lorraine Street. I'll never forget that. I think you all know what building I'm talking about. I went back to the bank and I thought. This is a plight and it's a blight in Hutchinson, so I resolved that day that if there was ever a chance that something like this would come to Hutchinson, that we would be a part of it."

Miller also acknowledged Pat Fallon of Plains State Bank, as they are also assisting on the project. 

The project goal is to finish by March of 2025, in time for the 2025 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

Jericho Energy Ventures teams up with Superior Boiler to produce Zero-Emission DCC™ Hydrogen Boilers in the U.S.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Halloween approaches, AAA Kansas reminds ghosts and goblins, trick-or-treaters, parents, and party goers too, of the dangerous traffic safety concerns associated with the holiday.

"First and foremost, we've got a lot of child pedestrians out there trick or treating," Steward said. "According to Safe Kids Worldwide, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the year. We also factor in people going to Halloween parties, impaired driving becomes an issue. You put those factors together and it can be very dangerous."

More than 40% of Halloween crash fatalities involve drunk drivers.

"Be very aware of your surroundings," Steward said. "Don't be speeding through neighborhoods. Especially if you're drinking, you're celebrating with alcohol or any kind of impairing substance, don't get behind the wheel. Find a sober driver to get you home safely."

If you must drive in a residential neighborhood, look for children crossing the street. They may not be paying attention to traffic and may cross the street mid-block or between parked cars.

"Sometimes, those motorists either don't see the kids in time to stop, or those drivers are impaired," Steward said. "The night can quickly turn tragic."

Also, if you have to drive at all, drive with your focus on the road and not on your phone, as distractions make it hard to see little ones that may cross your path.

AAA: Watch close while driving during Halloween fun

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Every year, the Hutchinson Public Library hosts a Creativity Contest for youth in 6-12th grade in the categories of art, photography, poetry, and short stories. 

Winners will receive gift prizes in Hutch Bucks for $10-$30. 

Additionally, in January the library hosts a “coffeehouse” for the participants to attend with friends and family. It’s a great way to highlight creative youth in the community. 

● ART can be any medium, must be at least 5”x7”, and no larger than 11”x17” and unframed (mats and mounts are allowed but not required).

● PHOTOGRAPHY must be at least 5”x7” and no larger than 8”x10” and unframed (mats and mounts are allowed but not required).

● POETRY may be written out legibly in ink or typed out.

● SHORT STORIES must be no longer than 8 pages, typed and double spaced.

● DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON YOUR ENTRY. Your name should appear only <a href="https://www.hutchpl.org/young-adults/">on the cover sheet</a>. Library teen creativity contest coming up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —

The Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club has announced their local finalists for the 2024 Youth of the Year. 

2023 Winner Zion Burgess, who finished 2nd at the state competition, is back for another try during his Senior year, along with Junior Taysha Rideaux and Sophomore Camrynn Harris.

The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

"When they find out that they are candidates, they really only have a month to maybe a month and a half," said Elicia Lance with the Club. "It is a fast process. I don't envy the judges, at all."

The winner of the Youth of the Year in December will receive a $1,000 college scholarship thanks to Heartland Credit Union and will compete in the Kansas Youth of the Year competition next spring.

Also, the Fund the Need paddle raise project has been announced.

"Last year, we were able to raise money for new furniture at both sites," Lance said. "This year, it is for a new van. There are over 450 families that rely on transportation from us after school and during the summertime, so this is a big need."

The banquet is at the Crystal Ballroom at the Burt, as it has been for the past couple of years and the event is Dec. 7.

This workshop will be at the Hutchinson Art Center Nov. 4 and 5. The registration deadline is Nov. 2

Led by a team of experienced, working artists, this ten-hour, hands-on workshop helps artists address specific needs and challenges they will face throughout an art career. Through discussions, activities, and hands-on exercises, artist-facilitators, and the group of peer artists, will help each artist set goals for a practice, write about their work, and build a personal brand.

Artist INC Express is a slimmed down, yet still highly active, version of the popular eight-week&nbsp;<a href="https://artistinc.art/programs/artist-inc-live/">Artist INC Live</a>&nbsp;program, which has been completed by more than 2,000 artists since 2009. Artist INC Express explores those same core concepts of how to build a lasting arts practice in a shorter, more flexible format, to help reach a broader audience of artists.

Artist INC Express is not a passive classroom experience. Those who sign on for Artist INC Express are asked to commit to the entire ten-hour workshop, as exercises build on one another and participants develop deep relationships with their fellow artists over the two sessions. Artists need to be ready to participate throughout in group discussions, hands-on exercises, and small group work.

Artist INC Express activates a network of artists in the community, leading to more peer-to-peer resource sharing, collaborations, and support long after the workshop concludes.

STAFFORD COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Honda dirt bike driven by Austin Hampton, 23, Hutchinson, was southbound on SE 100th Avenue six miles south of Stafford.

The dirt bike entered the ditch, came back onto the roadway and over turned.&nbsp; EMS transported Hampton to Wesley Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications team has been around for 40 years. The joint system was still a seven-digit number when they combined in 1983. The first 911 system was set up in Reno County in 1985. On Saturday, the dispatch center celebrated their 40th anniversary with a ceremony inside the Law Enforcement Center. 

The anniversary specifically marks the result of the center becoming one agency for EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement.&nbsp;Director of Emergency Communications Kevin Irwin said the idea to celebrate the anniversary came up in a staff meeting.&nbsp;

"Not many people can come in here and sit in front of those consoles 12 hours a day and listen to somebody, give CPR instructions, hang up the phone and do it again," Irwin said. "Or somebody is being assaulted or beat up, this folks do it everyday. They show up for work every day," Irwin said about the center's emergency dispatchers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Irwin said he wants the community to know that the celebration is giving honor as a service for them too. He said the top priority is to keep everyone safe, first responders safe, and dispatchers safe.&nbsp;

"They need to understand that we are here for them, and that it is all about them," Irwin said. "This is what we do. We are that calming voice that nobody sees a face to."&nbsp;

The anniversary celebration consisted of tours of the dispatch center, and discussion with emergency personnel. In total, the center has nine consoles and eight employees, not including leadership.&nbsp;

Those who attended the event also had the opportunity to learn about updates the emergency communication team has made together since Irwin become director eight months ago.&nbsp;

"I think the biggest thing is we're with the medical emergency dispatch, which is the medical script for the call taking process," Irwin said. "In July, we went live with the fire script, so that was in the works when I started and we worked right through it and got it launched in July and have been very successful in a proper fire. When a fire calls, we have the right questions to ask and the right time to send the resources."&nbsp;

Irwin said the center averages between 350 and 400 calls a day and a dispatcher typically works a 12 hour shift.&nbsp;

Dispatch commemorates 40th Anniversary 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/623595063179985/?acontext=%7B%22event_action_history%22%3A[]%7D">Pumpkinaries is back and at the EAGLE Media Studios Monday Oct. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to benefit the Rise Up Reno Prevention Network.</a>

"It's a really fun event we put on," said John Young with Rise Up Reno. "All of our programs, what we do, revolve around prevention and strengthening families and helping kids make good choices. This event, there's a lot of cool stuff going on. We have inflatables, there's cotton candy, there will be hot dogs, popcorn, the fire department will be here, the sheriff's department, police department. There will be a ton of games put on by our youth leaders."

There will also be live music from Morgan Wilk, Colton Gartleman and Katie Ziegler. My 93-1's Daren Dunn will be broadcasting live. Bring the kids in their favorite family-friendly costume. Everything is free.

"This year, just in our youth leadership program within the county, I believe we are around 125 or 135 kids in that," Young said. "As far as the young kids we serve in our mentoring programs like read with me and all that, by the end of the year, that will be in the thousands of kids that we reach."

Pumpkinaries Monday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab let Hutch Post know of a change in the law to hopefully reduce the regulatory burden both on businesses and on his office.

"You have to do an annual report, which just says, yes, we are still a business and these are the folks that are in charge of this business," Schwab said. "We're switching that to every other year. This is an initiative we came into office with in 2019. Originally, we wanted to do three or four years, but the bankers and the attorneys didn't like going that far out, because it's easy to hide fraud."

A business will have its every other year filing schedule set by the year that the business originally filed with the Secretary of State's office.

"If you originated your business in an odd year, then it will be every odd year is your filing," Schwab said. "If you originated in an even year, it's every even year that you will do your 24-month filing."

This is part of switching to a new computer system that will eventually allow for even less paperwork. The office does allow for these filings to be online, but you can still do it old school, if you want.

"We encourage them to do it online, but we still have folks that come to Topeka and paper file, or they try to mail it, which I always get a little bit nervous about mailing anything through the U.S. Postal Service these days," Schwab said. "Eventually, where we'd like to go is, if you file to start a new business, let's say a restaurant, then you've got to go to Ag and get your restaurant permit, get your liquor permit from Revenue, unemployment from Labor, if you're a minority business, you've got to go to Commerce. Eventually, we'll take the system so that you'll just answer all the questions in the wizard and when you click send, all those permits and policies come directly to you."
