The first significant snow arrived well before winter this year. 

Thankfully, it fell over Thanksgiving weekend, which meant I could savor the landscape’s transition to white from the comfort of my living room. This was fortunate because I hadn’t yet taken the proper precautions for cold, snowy weather.

My two-wheel drive truck didn’t have any added weight in the back. There also was no extra coat, extra boots with wool socks and a pair of winter gloves stashed in the cab along with an emergency blanket that looks like a big piece of aluminum foil. I’ve added all of those and also topped up the tires with air. If I do end up in a ditch, I’d much rather be warm and dry while waiting for help.

Despite all this preparation, I’d still rather not risk finding a ditch or worse during winter weather. The best course is to stay home. When that’s not possible, however, it’s best to be prepared with some extra clothes and a few essentials that should be in a vehicle regardless of the season. Items like a working flashlight, extra batteries, matches, candles and, if you regularly travel to areas with limited cell reception, some food.

Cold, wet weather makes the difference between a bad day and&nbsp;a catastrophic one razor thin. If you do run into trouble, help will take longer to arrive and your survival will depend on what you have in your vehicle. Topping off your gas tank before a trip can ensure a few extra hours of heat if you get stranded.Usually, your vehicle will offer the most protection from the elements and will be easier to spot in the elements than an individual. If it’s safe, the best thing to do is stay inside the cab and keep warm. Being on the side of a slippery road with reduced visibility is a recipe for getting hit by oncoming traffic. And, in blizzard conditions, it’s exceedingly easy to get lost just a few feet from your vehicle.

Common sense when driving also goes a long way. Check the weather on the route to your destination before leaving. You can even check road conditions at places like&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=3dabca453e&amp;e=3213e3277a" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>. Give yourself more time to account for driving slower and stopping more often if necessary. Do without the cruise control if it’s snowing or icing out and remember four-wheel drive doesn’t do anything to increase your ability to stop on slick surfaces.

If conditions allow you to be outside the vehicle, proceed with caution. If you’re attempting to dig out of a snowbank or performing other physical tasks, take plenty of breaks and stay warm. Slow and steady will help keep one accident from becoming another.

It’s far better to arrive at your destination a little late rather than never arrive at all. 

Take the extra time to prepare as we drive into winter so we can all enjoy the longer, warmer days that lie ahead.

RENO COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 5 p.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Mazda CX5 driven by Alexa Rae&nbsp;Schaffter,32, Arlington, was westbound on U.S. 50 at Dean Road.

The driver was unable to see due the sun. The SUV rear-ended a 2016 Nissan Frontier driven by&nbsp; Tina Louise&nbsp;Kastning, 66, Fall River, who was slowing&nbsp; to make a right turn.

EMS transported Kastning and two passengers in the the pickup identified as Mary&nbsp;Gingerich, 59, and Herman D.&nbsp;Gingerich, 58, both of Ohio, Kansas, to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; Schaffter was not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

3 hospitalized after Reno Co. rear-end crash

TOPEKA, Kan. — Five designs are presented as finalists for the next official State of Kansas standard issue license plate. The proposed designs were chosen in part because they align with Kansas Tourism design standards, with law enforcement needs, and with the following guidelines:

Kansans can vote on their favorite design as many times as they’d like between 9 a.m. CT on Monday, December 11, 2023, and 5 p.m. CT on Friday, December 15, 2023.The winning design concept will be announced on Monday, December 18, and will be used as the official State of Kansas license plate, subject to any required modifications that may be necessary due to the plate production process.

Time to vote on license plate design

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At 4:35 a.m. Monday, crews were dispatched to 418 S. Howard for a reported structure fire. 

When they got there, units found fire coming from a bedroom window on a single-story home. Crews made an aggressive interior attack and extinguished the fire. The structure sustained heavy smoke damage throughout and crews performed overhaul operations of the involved bedroom to look for fire extension into the attic space.&nbsp;

The fire is still being investigated by the Fire Marshal. 

Luckily, the 4 occupants self-alerted to the fire in the bedroom and were able to escape as the home did not have any smoke detectors to alert them to the working fire.

The Hutchinson Fire Department would like to remind its citizens to please check your residence for smoke detectors, whether you own your home or rent. If you have smoke detectors, please make sure they are working properly. Family escapes fire Monday morning

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas Central Model Railroaders will be holding their Grand Central Station Christmas Open House on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the club at 16 East 3rd.

The free event is at the regular clubhouse at 16 East 3rd in Hutchinson, where the public can watch the club's model trains operate on their own layouts at the clubhouse.

Model railroader Christmas Open House is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Alzheimer's Association provides a special Holiday Gift Guide for those with dementia and their caregivers, as knowing what to get for those with memory issues can be difficult.

"There are more than six million Americans living with Alzheimer's or other dementias," said Jen Shroyer with Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. "Depending on the stage of the disease, some well intentioned gifts may no longer be appropriate or practical for that person."

Keeping the person living with Alzheimer's engaged every day is quite a task, so there are some gifts that can really help.

"A memory phone that stores the names and the pictures and the contact information of family and friends can help a lot," Shroyer said. "We had that for my mother and she would sit for hours and just go through all of those. It was like the first time she's seen them or something. That's a great gift idea."

The most important gift you can give a dementia caregiver is the gift of time.

"My sister and I traded off every other weekend for my dad when he was taking care of Mom," Shroyer said. "Just giving them time, things like self-made coupons for going over and doing some things for them like house cleaning or cooking a meal, mowing the lawn, shoveling the driveway. That helps out that caregiver, a lot."

New Youth City Council elected

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Gregg Wamsley with the Hutchinson Public Library told Hutch Post that the Makerspace December activity is holiday related.

"We're doing a month long activity making a tree ornament," Wamsley said. "This month's project has a special twist, which is, you have to finish your project in an hour. You can come in, make a tree ornament, if you finish it within an hour, you can enter our contest and they will choose a winner."

This project is available at no cost during Makerspace open hours in December.

Makerspace at Hutchinson Public Library busy for the holidays

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson said his office is working with the&nbsp;Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services and Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities to increase awareness of&nbsp;Kansas ABLE Accounts for those on the IDD waiver waitlist.

"Of the people that we have on the Intellectual and Developmental Disability waitlist, those that have ABLE accounts have found them to be very useful," Johnson said. "The special sauce really is the&nbsp;Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities. They are the ones that brought the energy, the idea and the resources to say, let's reach out through our government entity, that is in touch with and working to serve all the groups and has the networks with the providers and then the Treasurer's Office on the back end to actually help people open the accounts."

The ABLE accounts are important because they won’t impact the means-tested benefits critical to many with disabilities.

"Those accounts are under the 529 section, but are for those with disabilities, where they can save on their own and not be constrained by the $2000 asset limitation to get their SSI benefits," Johnson said. "This allows them to achieve a level of financial independence that is otherwise not available."

The current number of ABLE accounts in Kansas is about 1800. There are more than that many people on the IDD waitlist alone.

"It won't work for everyone," Johnson said. "Realistically, we could increase the accounts by 50 or 100 percent just from that waitlist."

RENO COUNTY — The Board of Reno County Commissioners will have approval of an extension to the solar moratorium in the county as part of their consent agenda on Wednesday.

The moratorium, if approved as written, would extend until&nbsp;until July 1, 2024. It can be ended by the Board at any time before that they choose, if they want to take the opposite action.

They originally had a moratorium in place to&nbsp;give the county's Planning Commission time to develop solar project regulations.

Given the consensus of the board that additional work is required of the Planning Commission, they are giving them more time to do it.

It appeared at previous meetings that large scale commercial solar is not something the Board of County Commissioners wants in place under any circumstances, but smaller projects may have a chance at approval and narrowing the parameters for those is the work they would like to see continue.

The Board of County Commissioners meets Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room at the Reno County Courthouse.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education will hold the required non-resident students policy hearing Monday at 5:45 p.m. 

This is the initial step in following a statute passed earlier this year to tell the state how much capacity there is in USD 308 grade levels and buildings so that students can transfer in from other districts, if there is space available.

Speaking generally, if a student is in good standing, USD 308 and the other Reno County districts have traditionally taken transfer students, anyway, so this isn't really a change in anything, just fulfilling the legal requirement.

The meeting will take place at the Administrative Center at 1520 North Plum.

According to agenda documents, the&nbsp;Design Development estimate is for the work at the Nickerson Elementary School, Nickerson High School, Reno Valley Middle School and South Hutchinson Elementary. 

Work at these campuses includes security film at all glass exterior doors, upgrades at main entrances, bathrooms, the high school auditorium, and an addition at South Hutch Elementary.

The Design Development cost estimate for the project is $4,542,077. That does not include any roof work.&nbsp;

The intended timeline is for the design drawings to be finished by January 2, bidding to happen in January, and approval of the bids in February, so work can start in March over Spring Break for some of the projects.

USD 309 board to see estimate on bond projects

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 will be hosting a reception at 5:30 p.m. Monday prior to their December board meeting to thank the outgoing board members for their service to the district.

Matt McCabe, Miranda Engleken and Todd Carr will be finishing their service to Buhler at the end of the year.

On the board's agenda starting at 6 p.m. Monday is special recognition for the Buhler High Girls Golf Team, information on the district's Mental Health Intervention Team and their Jobs for America's Graduates (JAG) program, approval of the ESSDACK Interlocal Agreement, action on lease agreements regarding construction and equipment and buses, an update from the City of Buhler on their Industrial Park and reports from the district's Director of Finance and Superintendent.

The meeting will take place at the&nbsp;Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Mary Magdalene House at 7201 East 4th east of Hutchinson, is hosting its 3rd Annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. Homemade Jams, Jellies, and Pie Filling will be available by donation.

"The world's problems are not solved in offices, or in Congress, or places like that," said Annette VanBruggen with Mary Magdalene House. "The problems that hit the family are solved in the kitchen. When my kids come home, I can't hardly get them out of the kitchen so that I can actually cook the meal. We have a big kitchen at&nbsp;Mary Magdalene House that we use to service people. They come in, they help us cook meals, we distribute those meals to different people. We make jam, which is a great ministry that we use to help support the ministry and let them talk it out."

You can shop for locally hand crafted goods including tasty treats &amp; eats, Christmas ornaments, items to wear, and artwork.

There will also be wearable Mary Magdalene items including t-shirts, sweatshirts &amp; aprons.

Come enjoy delicious homemade soups for lunch &amp; cinnamon rolls for breakfast, along with coffee from Metropolitan Coffee.

"We have an auction going," VanBruggen said. "It's online&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href="http://marymagdalenehouse.com/?fbclid=IwAR2IkzsvicEtdVAFKgzWwKDhkF26gqbyhGao42nEahs9aujbiQUX-z4woMI" target="_blank">marymagdalenehouse.com</a>. Look under Events and you'll find the auction link. There's all kinds of baskets and there's some really nice furniture that Clydesdale Frames donated, that's all hand-crafted, that you can bid on. We have all kinds of stuff that we've just made throughout the year."

Auction closes Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. You do not need to be present to participate. The Silent Auction also ends at 3 p.m.

All purchased items must be picked up between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. the day of the auction. Special consideration will be given for large items.

The money will pay for the groceries to feed the groups that come to&nbsp;Mary Magdalene House.

"On Sunday mornings, we have a strong recovering addicts group that comes in for a worship service," VanBruggen said. "We serve them breakfast. Right now, we're serving between 45 and 55 people every Sunday morning."

There are groups almost every night at the House for one type of family in need or another.

Christmas Bazaar gives chance to visit Mary Magdalene House

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — EAGLE Media and Vermeer Great Plains came together on Friday evening for the 2023 Adopt a Child turn in party.&nbsp;

Throughout the holiday season, Country 102.9 and the Hutchinson EAGLE Media stations called on the community to adopt 219 children from Reno, Harvey and McPherson counties whose families needed assistance to give them a better Christmas. The stations were given the names thanks to the Kansas Department of Children and Families.

"We had so many bicycles this year, we had to put some of them in a separate room," said organizer and Country 102.9 Program Director, Randy McKay. "The generosity of EAGLE Media listeners is always so humbling. We are happy to be able to help this year and every year."

Adopt A Child recipient parents will pick up gifts next week.

Adopt-A-Child continues at EAGLE Media Center, thanks to Vermeer Great Plains

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Victor and Martha Peña have owned El Patio for 11 years. The local business started off in a trailer and expanded into a restaurant on South Main St. As of Friday afternoon, the&nbsp;Peña's opened a liquor store across the street from their restaurant called The Beer Point.&nbsp;

Victor said he and his wife opened the Beer Point because it made sense with the type of food that's served at El Patio.&nbsp;

"My wife is taking care of the other business, El Patio," Victor said. It's a family business and we decided to open this thing. I don't know nothing about this business I'm just going to go in there and learn."&nbsp;

The Beer Point will serve some Mexican beer brands that include Modelo and Dos Equis. However, Victor said the store will have other options as well.&nbsp;

"We are going to see how can we do it the best way for them," Victor said.&nbsp;

The Beer Point is located at 903 S. Main St.. The stores hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Art Center seeking members for 2024

KINGMAN, Kan. —&nbsp;The Kingman EMS held their Fill the Ambulance Food Drive on Dec. 2 and 3. Kingman EMS was able to deliver 1,940 pounds of food and goods and $771.82 in cash to the local food bank on Thursday. 

They want to thank Dollar General and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/whiteskingman?__cft__[0]=AZVgdyIbdKzdePuE-7TnA3UdTWUqJZeAvEnBpC5lI_wcj75XREiIYFTG0glTCvCySGfrxZQKTER0iLBvksx2lSA-BFu1JDtdnblxc85idwddL9DudX3YhwNyX7WyUYvghIRnK4E1u7KtYrUh0YaH8-u3zJv24umv9uj05Pd-yoQD9HdYV3Rjl08V-h5-XTk_t8Y&amp;__tn__=-]K-R">Whites Foodliner-Kingman</a> for hosting the event. They also want to thank the Kingman JAG students who came and helped unload the ambulance and organize all of the supplies at the food bank.
