HUTCHINSON, Kan. —The Hutchinson Salvation Army at 700 North Walnut will be open as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day through this extreme cold. 

They will be open Saturday and Sunday as well. The Salvation Army tries to make it a priority to be open during extreme heat or cold situations.

There will be coffee and hot chocolate available as during those hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RCAT says prepare for cold while waiting for the bus

Kansas Chamber elects Metzger to board

Join fellow Kansas corn, wheat, soybean and sorghum growers for Farm Bill updates, market discussions, weather and climate outlook and more during the 2024 Kansas Commodity Classic on Friday, January 26, 2024, in Salina.

The Kansas Commodity Classic is the annual convention of the Kansas corn, wheat, soybean and grain sorghum associations. The meeting will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event is free to attend and includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch, but pre-registration is requested.&nbsp;

Greg Akagi, agriculture director with WIBW Radio and the Kansas Agriculture Network, will emcee the day’s general sessions, which will start at 8:30 a.m. with remarks from Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam.&nbsp;

Ross Janssen, KWCH chief meteorologist, will continue the morning session by sharing his outlook on the weather for the 2024 growing season and long-term climate trends. The discussion will then turn to examining the grain markets with an update and 2024 outlook from Jim Minert, agricultural economist and director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture at Purdue University.&nbsp;

Following a networking break, members of the Kansas Congressional delegation — including Senator Roger Marshall, Representative Tracey Mann (KS-01), Representative Jake LaTurner (KS-02) and Representative Ron Estes (KS-04) — will share their updates and perspectives on the work taking place in Washington, DC. According to NAWG, cover crops and other practices that have been termed “climate-smart” have been regarded as emerging tools to help farmers continue to be the best stewards of their lands, but winter wheat has been overlooked as a vital tool in both conservation and food security.&nbsp;

NAWG recognizes the soil and environmental benefits of wheat in a crop rotation and therefore supports intentionally seeded winter wheat being eligible for classification as a cover crop for NRCS and other climate-smart programs, while not impacting its eligibility as a harvestable cash crop insurable through crop insurance and other safety net programs.

Kansas Commodity Classic to bring together Corn, Wheat, Soybean, Sorghum growers

Despite environmental challenges testing farmers throughout the 2023 crop season, the Kansas Soybean Yield Contest had a strong showing in entries with 40 participants – up 15 entries from the 2022 contest. The most recent iteration of the contest attracted several first-time entrants and brought back many familiar participants to make fierce competition for the top honors.

The highest-yielding entry of the 2023 contest came from&nbsp;Inman&nbsp;farmer Brett Froese. The Pioneer 42A84E soybeans yielded 104.2 bushels per acre and were entered in the statewide no-till irrigated division of the contest.

Bringing home the prize for having the highest dryland yield is Batchelder Farms of&nbsp;Highland&nbsp;with 101.3 bushel-per-acre soybeans. The Xitavo X03922E soybeans were entered in the north-northeast conventional-till division of the yield contest.

Chad Neill of&nbsp;Effingham&nbsp;claimed top prize in the statewide value contest by entering soybeans with a premium of $1.27 over cash value, as calculated by AGP. Neill entered Pioneer 39A45X soybeans to earn first place.

In the north-northeast conventional-till dryland category, Gary Diveley,&nbsp;Severance, placed second with 91.4 bushel-per-acre soybeans followed by Jesse Clark,&nbsp;Robinson, in third place with 90.8 bushels per acre.

In the north-northeast no-till dryland category, first place went to Johnson Ag Inc.,&nbsp;Bendena, with an entry of 88 bushels per acre. Second place went to Paul C. Johnson,&nbsp;Bendena, at 85.1 bushels per acre, and Alex Noll,&nbsp;Winchester, placed third with 80.4 bushel-per-acre soybeans.

In the northeast no-till dryland category, Vering Land and Pork,&nbsp;Marysville, earned first place with 90.7 bushel-per-acre soybeans, followed by Jared Lock,&nbsp;Hiawatha, in second place with 87 bushels per acre. Third place went to Derek Gigstad,&nbsp;Valley Falls, with an entry of 82.8 bushels per acre.

In the north central conventional-till dryland division, Rod Stewart,&nbsp;Washington, took first place with a 62.8 bushel-per-acre crop.

In the north central no-till dryland division, Ryan Stewart,&nbsp;Washington, earned first place with an entry of 62.4 bushels per acre.

In the east central no-till dryland category, first place went to Robert Litch,&nbsp;Melvern, who entered 59.6 bushel-per-acre soybeans. Litch took second in the statewide value contest with a premium of $1.26 over cash value.

In the southeast conventional-till dryland category, first place went to Roger Draeger,&nbsp;Galena, with 79.5 bushels per acre. Second place went to Chris Payne,&nbsp;Buffalo, with 68.6 bushels per acre and Luke Bellar,&nbsp;Mound Valley, placed third with a 65.1 bushel-per-acre entry.

In the southeast no-till dryland category, Dalton Draeger,&nbsp;Galena, received first place with an entry of 73.4 bushels per acre followed by Bradley and Emily McVey,&nbsp;Fredonia, in second place with 69 bushels per acre. Third place went to Jared Nash,&nbsp;Parsons, with a 51.9 bushel-per-acre crop.

In the south-central no-till dryland division, Aaron Pauly of&nbsp;Viola&nbsp;took first place with 69.5 bushels-per-acre soybeans followed by Bruce Seiler,&nbsp;Colwich, with 42.1 bushels per acre.

In the statewide no-till irrigated division, George Ensz,&nbsp;Inman, earned second place with 94.4 bushels per acre and Menold Farms,&nbsp;Hiawatha, placed third with 92.3 bushels per acre.

In the statewide conventional-till irrigated division, Doug Mills,&nbsp;Hugoton, took first place with 102.2 bushels per acre and Chad Penner,&nbsp;Inman, took second place with 100.2 bushels per acre. Third place went to Sam Miller,&nbsp;Haven, with an entry of 94.8 bushels per acre.

Roger Johnson,&nbsp;Hoxie, earned third place in the value contest by entering soybeans with a premium of $1.22 over cash value. The value contest analyzes a 20-ounce sample for its value-added qualities and calculates a premium. There were 43 entries in the 2023 contest, up 17 from the 2022 contest participation.

The Kansas Soybean Commission provides monetary awards to finalists each year. The highest dryland and irrigated yields in the state each receive a $1,000 award. In each district and the value contest, first place receives $300, second receives $200, and third receives $100.

Winners received recognition at the 2024 Kansas Soybean Expo January 10 in Topeka. The most recent iteration of the contest attracted several first-time entrants and brought back many familiar participants to make fierce competition for the top honors.The highest-yielding entry of the 2023 contest came from&nbsp;Inman&nbsp;farmer Brett Froese. The Pioneer 42A84E soybeans yielded 104.2 bushels per acre and were entered in the statewide no-till irrigated division of the contest.Bringing home the prize for having the highest dryland yield is Batchelder Farms of&nbsp;Highland&nbsp;with 101.3 bushel-per-acre soybeans. The Xitavo X03922E soybeans were entered in the north-northeast conventional-till division of the yield contest.Chad Neill of&nbsp;Effingham&nbsp;claimed top prize in the statewide value contest by entering soybeans with a premium of $1.27 over cash value, as calculated by AGP. Neill entered Pioneer 39A45X soybeans to earn first place.In the north-northeast conventional-till dryland category, Gary Diveley,&nbsp;Severance, placed second with 91.4 bushel-per-acre soybeans followed by Jesse Clark,&nbsp;Robinson, in third place with 90.8 bushels per acre.In the north-northeast no-till dryland category, first place went to Johnson Ag Inc.,&nbsp;Bendena, with an entry of 88 bushels per acre. Second place went to Paul C. Johnson,&nbsp;Bendena, at 85.1 bushels per acre, and Alex Noll,&nbsp;Winchester, placed third with 80.4 bushel-per-acre soybeans.In the northeast no-till dryland category, Vering Land and Pork,&nbsp;Marysville, earned first place with 90.7 bushel-per-acre soybeans, followed by Jared Lock,&nbsp;Hiawatha, in second place with 87 bushels per acre. There were 43 entries in the 2023 contest, up 17 from the 2022 contest participation.The Kansas Soybean Commission provides monetary awards to finalists each year. The highest dryland and irrigated yields in the state each receive a $1,000 award. In each district and the value contest, first place receives $300, second receives $200, and third receives $100.Winners received recognition at the 2024 Kansas Soybean Expo January 10 in Topeka. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County EMS shared the following tips on social media for use during the extreme cold weather.

Minimize travel and stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.

Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel. Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc.

Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.

If outside, wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, and a hat. The air between layers serves as insulation. Remember that strenuous activity leads to sweat which, without proper clothing, can accelerate hypothermia. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.

Hypothermia is an unusually low body temperature. Symptoms include shivering, exhaustion, fumbling hands, memory loss, confusion, slurred speech, or drowsiness. If you suspect someone has hypothermia, seek medical attention immediately.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Preventive Measures: To safeguard against frozen pipes within your home, consider the following tips:

· If pipes run through cabinets or vanities, open doors to allow warmer room temperatures to circulate.

· Maintain a small, steady trickle of water through the pipes. The minimal additional water cost is typically outweighed by the expenses associated with repairing a broken water pipe.

Dealing with Frozen Pipes: In the event that pipes within your home freeze, observe the following guidelines:

· Immediately shut off the water. Refrain from attempting to thaw pipes without first turning off the main shut-off valve.

· Safely thaw pipes using warm air. Use a hair dryer or a space heater to warm the air around the frozen section, ensuring constant supervision of space heaters and avoiding the use of kerosene heaters or open flames.

· Exercise caution when restoring water flow. After successfully thawing the pipes, gradually turn the water back on and inspect pipes and joints for any potential cracks or leaks caused by freezing.

City of Hutchinson gives tips to keep pipes from freezing

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The calendar has changed, but the direction of gas prices continues to be downward.

"We've seen lower demand, as fewer people are filling up after the peak of holiday road travel," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We really haven't seen much fluctuation on the global crude oil price."

The statewide price is at $2.67 per gallon, down three cents in the past week and 11 cents lower than a month ago. The year ago price was $2.90.

"The cold weather and winter storms can keep a lot of people at home," Steward said. "We saw that earlier this week when the big storm blew through. People were urged to stay off the road and that obviously impacts the amount of gas that's being sold."

Area counties are on either side of the state average.

"We're going to keep an eye on these upcoming really frigid temperatures," Steward said. "Those can effect refinery production, in some cases, which could push some regional pump prices higher. We'll just have to see if there are any refinery operations that are impacted by the brutal cold that's on our way."

More than half of the price of a given gallon of gas is determined by the per barrel price of the oil from which it is refined.

The Kansas Commissioner of Education let him know he has been selected as a 2024 Kansas Horizon Award Winner. 

 Thirty-two second year teachers are selected. Four elementary classroom teachers and four secondary classroom teachers from each region, will be individually recognized during a luncheon at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network conference. 

Allen will also be invited to participate as a special guest in the two-day KEEN conference.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Allen is Horizon winner

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the Kansas Senate Tax Committee holding a hearing on a bill to restore&nbsp;Local Ad Valorem Tax Reduction (LAVTR) Funding to counties on Thursday, Hutch Post asked Reno County Administrator Randy Partington what that might mean for Reno County.

"Commissioner Parks mentioned a few months ago, it's about $2.5 million, three to three and a half mill reduction," Partington said. "That's just from the information we have, that's not scientific. We haven't sat down and calculated the exact numbers."

LAVTR in Kansas has not received any contributions since 2003. The last time the Kansas Legislature considered funding LAVTR was 2004. 

Following a weather event like the one since the new year is a good time to remember that for those counties that don't have a lot of cities, more of a burden goes back on county work crews to cover the ground they have.

"You never know how much salt or different materials you're going to need," Partington said. "The overtime, the cost to treat roads, you can never have enough [in reserve]."

It is politically easy to continue to make a budget change each year that can be hidden in a bigger bill to take this away from counties, that's what has been done for decades, but to follow what is already written is more of a challenge.

"The county commissioners just want the portion that is in statute to come back to Reno County to help offset taxes, to truly come back, instead of being pushed into the state fund for them to use," Partington said.

An amendment to the budget was proposed and passed by the House to fund LAVTR in 2023, but ultimately the amendment failed to move forward in the Senate.

LAVTR restoration could make large impact in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Healthy Neighborhood Initiative, a program of the Neighborhood Development division of Hutch Rec, is proud to unveil its new logo, a symbol of unity and partnership that embodies the collaborative efforts of Hutch Rec, the City of Hutchinson, and residents. The logo features two converging circles with a home at the center, representing community, collaboration, and the coming together of diverse elements to create a unified whole through the initiative's impactful work.

"We are happy to introduce our new logo, which is a visual representation of the partnership and collaboration at the core of the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative," said Tony Finlay, Executive Director at Hutch Rec.

The logo launch comes as the initiative prepares to share success stories of its eight featured neighborhoods: SW Bricktown, Grace Arbor, Creekside, College Grove, Farmington Park, The Founders Neighborhood, Midtown, and the area surrounding Lincoln-McCandless Elementary. Each neighborhood has unique achievements and contributions to the overall community spirit and healthy living in Hutchinson.

On January 27 and February 3, these neighborhoods will host their Annual Meetings where residents will set future goals, discuss funding for projects, and plan neighborhood activities. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — NASA has contracted with Lockheed Martin Skunk Works to build a new, full-scale X-plane to help solve the challenge of understanding sonic booms and how to make them quieter.

The Live Watch Party for the Rollout Ceremony of NASA's X-59 QueSST (short for Quiet SuperSonic Technology), an experimental piloted aircraft.will begin at 2:45 p.m., Friday, January 12, in the Cosmosphere's Grand Lobby. NASA’s live coverage will begin at 3:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northwest corner of East 4th Avenue and North Elm.

The building at 324 E. 4th was built and opened as Lums Restaurant in 1969 with Jack Taylor as manager, but it didn't last long. At that point, the subject of today's article entered. 

Ted Nieciecki was an interesting entrepreneur. In 1972, he started Ted's Family Restaurant in this building. The first photo shows the business at opening.

In 1974, he turned this into the Golden Cymbal Supper Club. Between 1976 to 1982, it was the Hutchinson Appliance Center, owned by Jack Zabel. 

In 1983 and 1984, it was Budget Rental with A.D. Arney.

In 1987, it became Casa De Zaki Restaurant, owned by Troy Albright. 

In May 1994, it became Connecting Point Computer Center, owned by Steve Harper. The name was changed to Network Management Group Inc. in 2000. The second photo shows that business.

In May 2019, NMGI moved to larger quarters at 734 E. 4th. The third photo shows the tenant of 324 E. 4th today, the PRMI Support Center, owned by Billzy L.L.C. of Henderson, Nevada.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Rise Up Reno Youth Empowerment Summit is a free event taking place on Monday, Jan. 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hutchinson High School for 5th through 8th graders from the area.&nbsp;

Through a series of activities and discussions with community members, students will become better equipped for transitions into middle and high school. 

They will learn about leadership, resilience, and how to access leadership opportunities, all while beginning to build relationships with caring adults and older students.

Parks chair, Bogner vice-chair of County Commission for 2024

HAVEN, Kan. — A Maize woman was killed and a Pretty Prairie man was injured in an accident on K-96 Wednesday afternoon in Haven.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, A 2019 Kenworth tractor trailer in the westbound lanes of the highway was&nbsp;partially blocking the driving lane while assisting a stranded motorist. 

For an unknown reason, a 2023 Kia Sportage struck the passenger rear corner of the semi and then rotated counter clockwise and came to rest on the right shoulder of the West bound lane facing Southeast.

The driver of the Kia, 23-year-old Jaeden Michelle Douglas of Maize, was killed, a juvenile was also in the vehicle, but that record is protected. Also hurt was pedestrian, 21-year-old Aaron Joseph Brewer of Pretty Prairie. He was taken to Hutchinson Regional for treatment of minor injuries.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A small home in Hutchinson caught fire Wednesday morning. The same home also suffered a fire in mid-December and is now considered uninhabitable.&nbsp;

According to a release from the Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD), crews were sent to the 400 block of Howard Street around 3:45 a.m. for a possible structure fire.&nbsp;

Crews were faced with heavy black smoke from the front entry of the building. HFD was able to access and extinguish the fire. Heavy fire and smoke was coming out of the front of the residence.&nbsp;

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The investigation is not ruling out an electrical issue as the cause.&nbsp;

Evergy, Kansas Gas, the Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County EMS and 1-800-BOARDUP assisted at the scene.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As there will be absences among the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday, Jan. 24, which would be their customary meeting date, they have decided to have their next meeting be on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Since the State of the City meeting is that morning, they will delay the start of that meeting until 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 31. A formal agenda will be released a few days before the meeting.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual State of the City breakfast has been set by the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce.

This is a chance for Chamber members and community members to hear from City leadership on the goals for 2024.

The annual event started as an idea by the local AMBUCS club in 2012.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Sand Hills Event Center at 4601 North Plum.
