Renowned rock band NEEDTOBREATHE to play at Kansas State Fair

Tent camping in July in Kansas usually isn’t on my list of ways to spend a weekend. Yet I recently found myself slowly sinking into an air mattress with a clear view of the stars through a thin mesh canopy, which served as my only protection from the elements. Somehow this ill-advised excursion actually worked out with an overnight low in the mid-60s. Officially the event was a family reunion of sorts with a couple cousins and a brother at the family ranch. Kids ranging from high school to elementary school were included, of course. Camping simply offered proximity but the real reason we gathered at the ranch was for the amenities like fishing, four-wheeling, swimming, splashing through creeks, catching crawdads and plinking targets. If you’re seeing a bunch of middle-aged men attempting to relive their childhoods while introducing their city-slicker kids to a distorted view of what country living is like, you’ve pretty much got the picture. Everyone ended with the same number of fingers and toes they started with. The kids had a fantastic time, as did the old folks who always seemed a step or two behind for some reason. Outside of sleeping in a tent, we weren’t exactly roughing it. My brother obtained a large, enclosed trailer to make transporting all the four-wheelers, kayaks and other fun things easier. It also meant we had plenty of room for provisions, no matter how practical they were. Our campsite was on a small patch of lawn, and we arranged our tents in an arc around a small circle of rocks that marked the makeshift cook station and firepit. About 20 yards away was a large barn with electricity and a refrigerator. We still spent a small fortune on ice, which we lugged around in an assortment of coolers. Amongst all the activity there was a noticeable absence of cell phones among both parents and kids. Other than grabbing the occasional picture or checking the time, everyone found plenty of other distractions to hold their attention. When the sun went down, everyone pulled their chairs closer to the fire and the focus of conversation ranged from the old folks rehashing the past to the kids wanting to know more about their grandparents, great grandparents and the ranch in general as coyotes howled in the distance. Everyone stayed up just late enough for the moon to set and clouds to break so we could see a star-filled sky with traces of the Milky Way visible in the background. For a little over 24 hours nothing existed outside of our little group. There were no important calls or emails to respond to. No ball games to attend or other responsibilities to worry about. All of us were, briefly, just kids in the country, until we had to load the trailer and head back to reality. But that has its advantages as well. Like a regular mattress, air conditioning and indoor plumbing. NICKERSON, Kan. — The City of Nickerson said on social media that&nbsp; Nickerson EMS is looking for individuals who desire to help their neighbors and become involved in the community.

No experience is necessary, the city will help you gain the education and experience needed. For the right individuals, Nickerson EMS will pay for a candidate's schooling to become a certified EMT.

Because of the sensitive nature of what they believe to be a “calling”, there is an application process, background check, and interview.

Nickerson looking for EMS volunteers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Grammy award winner, Carly Pearce, is coming to the Kansas State Fair, Saturday, September 9. Her top hits include “I Hope You're Happy Now” (with Lee Brice), “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” (with Ashley McBryde), “Every Little Thing”, “What He Didn't Do”, and “Next Girl”.

At age 16, Pearce left her home in Kentucky to take a job at Dollywood. In a fullcircle turn of events, iconic superstar and Grand Ole Opry member Dolly Parton extended the coveted invitation to Carly, who was officially inducted by Trisha Yearwood on August 3, 2021.

Pearce’s 2-time Platinum-certified “I Hope You’re Happy Now” with Lee Brice won both the CMA Awards Musical Event of the Year and ACM Awards Music Event of the Year as well as the 2021 ACM Single of the Year. Carly recently took home ACM Awards Female Artist and Music Event of the Year for “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” with Ashley McBryde.

Opening for Pearce is up-and-coming country artist Megan Moroney. Her debut EP, Pistol Made of Roses, includes songs “Tennessee Orange,” “Hair Salon,” “Keep the Flowers,” and “I Love Me.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After being away for three years due to the pandemic, the Ulster Project returns to Hutchinson in July of 2023. Emily Anderson is a Hutchinson host teen.

"I thought it would just be like, really cool to have someone from a whole other country come to your house and live with you for a whole entire month," Anderson said. "Not to mention, it looks really good on college applications. It's obviously been really, really fun so far."

The project brings Catholic and Protestant youth from both Hutchinson and Portadown, Northern Ireland together to find common ground and build fellowship. For Northern Irish teen Ronan McComb, it's been a good experience.

"I just thought it looked like a lot of fun and I could meet new people that I would never have met," McComb said. "For example, I would never have met Lola (Morton, fellow Northern Irish teen) if I didn't do the project, because our communities are so segregated."

The Ulster Project was started in 1975 by Rev. Kerry Waterstone, a priest in Northern Ireland, in order to provide a safe place in North America for Northern Irish teenagers to discuss the climate of&nbsp; “The Troubles” that was facing them at home. For Morton, she will take a new perspective home when they leave later this week.

"It's really nice to get along with everyone," Morton said. "I think, as I go back home, I think you should just treat everyone with kindness, like we have been treated here. The host families opening up their home and welcome us in for a month, it's just, it's wonderful."

Tanner Weathers is a Hutchinson teen whose brother had done the project before, but even with that background, he wasn't sure what to expect.

"On the first day, when they first came into the home, I was kind of worried," Weathers said. "I didn't know if we were going to be the right match or not, but after that first day, we kind of just clicked together. We've been having a great time ever since. We've been going on our own adventures, being our own little family."

Ulster Project Hutchinson board member and former Ulster teen Keith Neill said that getting started back up after COVID was a challenge, but that Hutchinson has been so supportive of the teens, just like they were before the pandemic.

Ulster teens learning as project returns to Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The 2023 Boots and Bling fundraising event will take place at the Kansas State Fairgrounds on Aug. 12.&nbsp;

While tables are all sold out, there are still sponsorship opportunities.&nbsp;

Boots and Bling is the signature event of the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation and has come to be known as the best fundraising party in Kansas. This year's theme is Champagne Life.&nbsp;

The event provides sponsorship opportunities, many one-of-a-kind live and silent auction items, a delicious meal, and a fun night of entertainment and fundraising to support the mission of the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation.

The Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation strives to inspire excellence and understanding of Kansas agriculture, industry and culture through the Kansas State Fair, activities, educational programs and opportunities.

&nbsp;Formed in 2003, the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation was established with the specific purposes of furthering the renovation, construction, preservation and beautification of the Kansas State Fairgrounds. 

Their goal is to help, assist, promote, support, maintain, enhance, endow and advance the interests of the Kansas State Fair, and to encourage education of the public about the Kansas State Fair and its purpose and activities.

Boots and Bling scheduled for mid-August at fairgrounds

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Evergy customers will have one more opportunity to attend a public hearing to learn about the company’s rate increase request, ask questions and make comments before the Kansas Corporation Commission. The third and final public hearing will be held this Thursday at Wichita State University’s Lowe Auditorium at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex, 5014 SE 29th&nbsp;St. North, beginning at 6 p.m.

The application, filed with the KCC on April 25, requests an average monthly rate increase of $14.24 for Evergy Central customers and $3.47 for Evergy Metro customers. Commission approval is required before a regulated utility can change its rates.

KCC to hold Wichita public hearing in Evergy rate increase request Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Planning Commission is looking at a Conditional Use Permit for a Salvage Yard on property zoned I-3 Heavy Industrial District at its meeting on Tuesday, according to agenda documents. 

The subject site is comprised of two parcels generally located on the northeast corner of East Sherman Avenue and North Superior Street.

Both parcels, separated by an alley, are currently vacant and undeveloped. The surrounding properties are all zoned I-3 Heavy Industrial District and are developed with various industrial uses. 

The Conditional Use Permit will allow for the expansion of Hutch Metals Recycling, LLC, a salvage operation located across the street at 7 North Superior Street. A Conditional Use Permit was approved for the existing operation by the Hutchinson City Council in 2021.

Also on the agenda is a vacation of a portion of the setback at 4606 Winesap, Day Care text Amendments, and a discussion on the C-6 corridor in Hutchinson. That's all to be talked about Tuesday.

The Planning Commission also has announced that it plans to discuss the&nbsp;Neighborhood Revitalization Rebate Program and changes to regulations for future power substations at its August 8 meeting.

City Planning Commission to look at salvage yard Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —New and returning students in USD 308 are now able to <a href="https://www.usd308.com/page/enrollment-landing-page">enroll for the 2023-2024 school year online</a>. For the best experience, please complete this process on a laptop or computer.

The enrollment fee for each K-12 student is $65. Optional fees include yearbooks and activity passes for students in grades 7 through 12.

"We have a marathon day on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all schools," said district spokesperson Stacy Goss. "You can walk in and enroll there. You can enroll online and then take some additional paperwork on that day. It's really whatever you want to do, but we're ready for you."

Open houses at the district's elementary schools are August 14. HMS-7, HMS-8 and Avenue A have their open houses July 27. Hutch High does not have a traditional open house, but you can tour the school during enrollment on July 27.

If you have a 7th or 8th grader and you miss the July 27 open house, there is a second chance open house at HMS-7 and HMS-8 on August 15 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

If you would prefer a virtual school option, you can choose to enroll your student in Hutchinson Virtual School for the 2023-2024 school year.

The mission of Hutchinson Virtual School is to provide a quality alternative to traditional schools in a virtual format assisted by licensed USD 308 teachers, and the school is fully accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education.

The curriculum for the program is internet-based and is powered by Acellus for all grade levels. Students will have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.acellus.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">24/7 access to Acellus</a>, which allows for anytime, anywhere flexibility.

Hutchinson Virtual School is physically located inside of Avenue A School, 111 S. Madison in Hutchinson. This is where all in-person meetings will take place.

If your student is new to the USD 308 district, please enroll them as a new student, and select Hutchinson Virtual School as your school building.

All families are encouraged to fill out the free or reduced-price meal application.

"It does provide us with additional information for our district and some funding that allows us to move forward," said Krystal Young with USD 308. "There are many families that might not qualify, but we would love for all of our families to fill out that application, either with online enrollment or in person, when they come to our school."

Only students with approved applications will receive free or reduced-price meals. Families who do not qualify for free meals will be responsible for paying for their child's meals at reduced or paid rates.

USD 308 in person enrollment Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;After the recent Supreme Court decision in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross, Congress needs to act to make sure ag products can continue to move between states and the&nbsp;Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act is designed to do that. It was introduced in the Senate last month by Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall.

"The state of California wants to tell Kansas farmers how to grow pigs," Marshall said. "We're not going to let them do that. We feel it's a violation of state rights, it has interstate commerce issues. Today, California wants to tell us how to grow hogs. Next, it will be chickens and cattle. Eventually, they are going to tell us how to build airplanes and how to build cars, as well. We think that will be very stifling to the economy."

Conservation and efficiency of operations are vital to the interests of farmers throughout the country.

"Our farmers and ranchers have so much respect for our livestock," Marshall said. "That's really what this issue is about. They are concerned about how we raise sows in modern day agriculture. What happens are, the sows will actually roll over on their little piglets. What we do is, when they have baby piglets, we put them in a little bit smaller container chamber, so they don't roll over and kill the pigs. We actually think it's the more humane thing to do, but here we have California trying to tell us how to grow pigs in Kansas."

The bill would let any producer injured by a regulation on their product to potentially bring an action in the appropriate court to invalidate that regulation and seek damages for economic loss resulting from that regulation.

City of Buhler to set budget hearing Tuesday

The Reno County Health Department will have extended hours for back-to-school immunizations this year in July and August, in plenty of time for the start of the new school year.

Extended hours at Health Department for back to school

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — This week is the last chance to view "75 Years in the Making: A Hutchinson Art Association Permanent Collection". 

This is the largest display of artwork from the Hutchinson Art Center's permanent collection in recent memory and shows off of the best of what the collection has to offer. 

The exhibition ends on Saturday, July 29th.

The Hutchinson Art Association was founded in the spring of 1949 by board members Ernest Dewey, Martha Hamilton, Mrs. Jack Jarrot, Ed Wiley, Josephine Dalton, Marguerite Sours, and Shirley Schmidt.

Its first big exhibition was held on June 12, 1949 in the auditorium at Hutchinson Community College, then known as the Hutchinson Junior College. The exhibit was a New York show from the American Federation of Art. Regional art was also shown in various classrooms.

At the time, it was one of the most prestigious exhibits to ever visit Hutchinson, Kansas.

In the decades since, the Hutchinson Art Association has collected over 350 works of art by local, national and international artists. These works of art display on rotation year round in the Permanent Collection Gallery.

Special permanent collection exhibit at Hutchinson Art Center closes Saturday

MANHATTAN, Kansas — Producers and landowners who install enduring conservation practices may qualify to receive financial assistance for these projects through a voluntary cost share program. The FY 2024 state cost share program for conservation practices is underway to encourage projects that improve water quality and quantity. Funding is provided by the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Conservation (KDA–DOC) through appropriation from the State Water Plan Fund and the program is administered by Conservation Districts across the state.

Landowners and producers with natural resource concerns on their property are encouraged to visit their local Conservation District office to discuss the possibility of receiving state financial assistance. Along with the annual funding, additional funding is available this year to landowners and producers interested in eligible water resources practices such as irrigation water management, nutrient management, planting cover crops, livestock water supplies, cross fencing, and abandoned well plugging.

Landowners and producers who are approved for the program will be notified of the practice(s) approval and the estimated amount of cost-share that will be provided. Projects started or completed prior to being approved for funding by individual districts and KDA–DOC are not eligible for these funds.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson will be collecting more actual dollars in taxes for its 2024 budget than it did in 2023. Exceeding the Revenue Neutral Rate was approved by the City Council on July 18.

"You have agreed to exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate for our mill levy," said Finance Director Angela Richard. "It was previously agreed that we would split it in between what it was for the 2023 budget and what the revenue neutral rate is. Before you, you see a lower mill levy than last year, but still not meeting the revenue neutral rate. In 2023, it was 41.555. We are proposing 40.326 and the Revenue Neutral Rate is 39.104."

That is the ceiling for the city's budget. They can always spend less and do so almost every year, but they can't spend more than what they said here from mill levy dollars.

"This resolution also sets the date of our budget hearing to Sept. 5," Richard said. "It must be between Aug. 20 and Sept. 20."

A complete proposed budget will be posted to the City’s website as soon as possible to give the City Council and citizens time to review before the budget hearing.

City will collect more taxes under budget proposal

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas notes that extremes in temperature, no matter the direction, can be hard on a vehicle's battery.

"Heat in the summer months can be just as harmful or more so to vehicle batteries than the frigid winter temperatures," Steward said. "A lot of people think about dead batteries in the depths of winter cold, but summer is tough on them, too. Last summer in Kansas, AAA responded to more than 29,000 calls for emergency roadside service. Nearly 19% of those calls were for dead batteries and dead battery replacements."

Extended periods of inactivity can lead to a weakened battery, so if you haven't driven a car in a while, that also means it should be checked on.

"Warm summer temperatures can cause battery fluid evaporation and cable issues," Steward said. "In general, extreme temperatures cause a battery to work harder to start your vehicle, to operate your vehicle, but it's always important, especially if your battery is older. A typical life span of a battery is three to five years."

As remote work options have become more prevalent, many vehicles remain idle for extended periods.

"There's a lot of providers of batteries," Steward said. "You can look at your local auto parts store. If you're a AAA member, we offer batteries, as well. We'll actually come out and check your battery for free. If it needs to be replaced, we can do that on site."

By proactively maintaining the battery and charging system, drivers can ensure their safety and reduce the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns.
