HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Schools welcomed back teachers and staff at their annual Convocation event on Wednesday, August 9th. Held at the Sports Arena, this event featured guest speaker, Debra Teufel, President of the Hutch Chamber, an awards ceremony presented by the Davis Foundation, and a keynote by Dr. Dawn Johnson. Staff were also recognized for their years of service in a new segment called the “Salthawk Service Award.” A community resource fair was held after the event.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Certified and Classified Employee of the Year&nbsp; Each year Hutchinson Public Schools honors a Certified and Classified staff member as “Employee of the year.” This year’s Classified Employee of the Year winner was Karrah Bishop, Secretary at Morgan Elementary School. The award was presented by Classified Employee Council President, Sally Bailey. The Certified Employee of the Year winner was Mary Raines, English Language Arts teacher at Hutchinson Middle School 7. This award was presented by Krystal Young, Deputy Superintendent and Director of HR.&nbsp;

Davis Foundation Recognizes Teachers&nbsp; The Davis Foundation began in 1954 when James and Juliet Davis&nbsp;sought&nbsp;to honor local Hutchinson Public Schools teachers and students. They saw an opportunity to award teachers for their hard work and dedication to students through cash awards. Each year, USD 308 teachers are nominated by students, staff, parents or administration. The nominations are reviewed by the Foundation committee. Teaching nominees are judged on their student impact, professional excellence, and exceeding expectations. An interview round is conducted during consideration. Nominations are kept secret until they are announced at Convocation each year.&nbsp;

This year’s winners were:&nbsp; Trent Bain, Drafting teacher at Hutchinson High&nbsp;School Career &amp; Technical Education Academy&nbsp; Julia Johnson, Art teacher at Hutchinson High School&nbsp; Mary Raines, English Language Arts teacher at Hutchinson Middle School 7&nbsp; Jazzmyn Tolbert, Third Grade teacher at Graber&nbsp; Kerri Werth, Fifth Grade teacher at STEM Magnet at Allen&nbsp;

Salthawk Service Award&nbsp; “We re-started an old tradition of recognizing the tenure of our staff at Convocation. Somehow, possibly during COVID when Convocation went digital, staff recognitions were lost. We requested feedback from Convocations in the past, and this was one event that people wanted us to bring back. We are calling this the Salthawk Service Award. Staff will be recognized for each 5 years of completed service with the district. They will receive a H-Hawk lapel pin for each 5 years of service and a certificate with their years of service,” said Krystal Young, Deputy Superintendent and Director of HR.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year, 54% of staff were recognized for more than 5 years of service with the district. Staff that have been employed 10 years or more represent 32% of all staff. District staff that have been employed by USD 308 for more than 15 years make up 20% of our employees. “That is a great honor- to work with individuals who have dedicated their professional lives to students,” said Young. “Some staff have been with us for over 45 years! Their dedication to our school district and this community is a true testament to the positive impact educators make every day.”&nbsp;

Dr. Johnson Delivers State of the District&nbsp;&nbsp; Dr. Dawn Johnson delivered the State of the District speech. During her remarks she spoke on the work that the Board of Education and other community members have completed over the past 6 months. Through multiple workshops a new mission, vision and core value statement were drafted. Moving forward USD 308’s guiding principles will be:&nbsp;&nbsp; Mission: Educating and empowering every Salthawk for life.&nbsp; Vision: Today’s students prepared for tomorrow’s world.&nbsp; Core Values: Innovation, Compassion, Integrity, Perseverance.&nbsp;

USD 308 honors teachers and staff at convocation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Chief Brice Burlie commented on his hire at Tuesday's Hutchinson City Council meeeting.

"I'd like to first thank Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements for giving me this opportunity to fill the role as the Chief of Police for the City of Hutchinson," Burlie said. "I understand the importance of having the right person in that position. Time will tell if I am that right person, but I will tell you that I am going to do everything in my power to try to make it the best agency that we can, with the thought in mind that we're here to serve the citizens of Hutchinson and that's who we answer to."

Burlie made it clear the process was rigorous to get to this point, and Clements didn't make any snap decisions.

"She was very diligent through the application process and put us all through the wringer pretty good," Burlie said. "I really appreciated that, because I felt that she was doing everything to make sure that the right candidate was selected for that job. I thought it was well done."

Burlie also thanked his family for allowing him to take on this opportunity.

"It's been challenging at times, but they've always stood in my corner," Burlie said. "I wouldn't be here today without them. I'd also like to thank all the officers on the department, all the employees for the Hutchinson Police Department. They've been nothing but supportive. The real reason that I wanted to take on this job was because of them. They have a real commitment to the city and making it the best city that it can be and the safest city that it can be. A lot of people got me here. This was not just me. It was so many other people. I just wanted to thank everybody that has anything to do with it. I'm looking forward to the challenge. I think we are going to do great things and I'm really looking forward to it."&nbsp;

Burlie has twenty-four years of experience, beginning as a recruit and working his way up through the ranks to Operations Captain prior to being named Interim Chief in June.

Burlie comments on permanent hire Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The monthly Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber luncheon is coming up Wednesday, Aug. 16.

"That will be at 11:45 a.m., over at Stringer Fine Arts Center," said Debra Teufel with the Chamber. "We're very thankful for Reno County Health Department being our sponsor this month, but also for Seth Dewey, who also works in public health for our community and for Reno County. He leads a drug task force in our community that is looking at all of the challenges around substance misuse in the community and how do we as a community come together to solve those challenges? He's done a lot of work in that regard."

In speaking to the Chamber, Dewey wants to be sure that businesses know what their risks and rewards are of helping those with substance use disorders get better.

"He's going to really focus this time on the dollars and cents of substance misuse and how it effects the workplace and how it effects our member businesses," Teufel said. "We're looking forward to hearing from Seth. We also will have, kind of a dual feature that day, because Bryan Schulz is going to give a preview to all of the fun things coming up at the Kansas State Fair. That is approaching quickly."

Chamber luncheon coming up Wednesday

RENO COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a break-in at a rural home in Reno County.

The man seen in a security video entered into an abandoned residence located in the rural southwestern portion of Reno County, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office.

It is apparent the subject was aware of the cameras in the home as he provided a couple one-fingered salutes to them. 

It's unknown what the person was looking for as this house had a recent foreclosure which resulted in an auction. So not much bang for his buck considering the steps he took in breaking in with his backpack and ready-to-steal-something bandana disguise

Sheriff working to ID suspect who broke into rural home

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Festival of Remembrance for Hospice and Homecare of Reno County to benefit the Hospice House is coming up Friday, Aug. 18 at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

"We're really excited for the festival to bring our community together and help us celebrate the successes that we've had," said Hospice board member Rachel Nelson. "Also, it's important to be there for each other during some of those times of remembering our lost ones."

This one night of fun includes silent and live auctions, raffle drawings for big ticket items and even a car giveaway. There are a handful of tickets left.

"The tickets can be purchased <a href="https://www.hutchregional.com/hospice-homecare-of-reno-county/">online</a>," said Tara Dahlstrom with Hospice. "There are just a few, though. We've had great support with sponsorship tables this year, so we don't have a lot of tickets left."&nbsp;

2023 marks the 12th year that Mel Hambelton Ford has pledged a vehicle donation for the event.

"All of the revenue that we make in our other programs goes toward supporting Hospice House," said Darla Wilson with Hospice. "Actually, the last several years, it's been a deficit. Costs keep going up, but our reimbursement does not go up at the same rate. It's a hole that you dig. This helps us to stay above water and continue to provide the wonderful support and services for our community."

Hospice and HomeCare serves a 50-mile radius and serves patients in their homes, care facilities, and at the Hospice House.

Hospice Festival of Remembrance is Friday

Each $65 ticket includes unique, chef-prepared dishes made from locally grown foods, and two complimentary drinks of your choice from Inland Ocean Wine or Sandhills Brewing.

Wesley Towers looking for vendors for Fall Festival

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Robert Calhoun with Countryside Baptist Church in Hutchinson wants the community to come Sunday for a special Southern Gospel concert with the Abundance Quartet from Missouri at the church.

"We have not had them before at the church," Calhoun said. "The first time I heard them was at the State Fair a few years ago when they sang at the stage I was in charge of out at the fair. We talked soon after the fair a few years ago and they were already scheduled and then COVID hit and so they stopped a lot of their bookings. They had a cancelation and they got a hold of me."

The concert will be at 10:45 a.m. at the church at 819 West 30th in Hutchinson.

"We will have plenty of seating," Calhoun said. "In fact, we're going to set up some chairs out in our lobby, just to make sure that we're able to accommodate everybody. They are an interesting group, in that they all have varied backgrounds, but when you put it all together, they have almost 80 years sharing God's message of grace and hope through music."

They will take a freewill offering at the concert for the group's expenses.

Southern Gospel group in Hutchinson Sunday

A strange and vivid memory from my pre-teen world view was thinking after high school life was pretty much over. It makes me laugh and shake my head a little to think about how naive and small my world was because I couldn’t imagine anything worthwhile in life beyond high school. Even as a senior in high school if you had asked what life would look like in 20 years, I don’t think I would have guessed correctly about anything personal or professional. I am happy to report that life has been bigger, better and crazier than I would have imagined; I attended and earned degrees from two universities, have lived at 16 addresses in six states, traveled to 17 countries around the world, worked for 11 companies, made my wildest dreams come true and learned what it takes to achieve greatness at something. There have also been hard times, failures and plenty of stress, but I learned from it all. The best part of my life in the past two decades is the friends I have made along the way. I won’t extol the many virtues of my friends because we all think our friends are the best, but I know I have been blessed with a tribe of people who share my interests, values and ambitions. It took leaving my home town to find most of these people. My graduating class had 52 kids in it. It was a given that you were friends with everyone more out of proximity than commonality. I knew some of my classmates much better than others, but I knew them all and considered them friends. Together, for better or worse, we spent 13 years learning, growing and playing. This fall we have plans for a 20 year class reunion, and I am honestly excited. It may be a case of distance and time making my heart grow fonder but I can’t wait to hear about where their paths have taken them and who they have become. Even if I didn’t get much choice in my classmates, they still hold a special place in my heart; we lived too much life together not to care. I know my perspective on class reunions is not shared by all people. It makes me a little sad to hear someone say they will never attend a reunion. I have never understood people who want nothing to do with their past or the others who feel pressure to look fabulously successful for a reunion. The mean girls and rivalries of TV and movie high school reunions seem to be inflated. I believe in my heart that most people at a reunion are genuinely excited to see each other to catch up and share memories from their time together. Maybe that’s all it really takes for a great reunion: people choosing to believe the best in their former classmates. We can all celebrate success, give an encouraging word of support, or reminisce about the memories of our youth. For one day, we can rekindle relationships that helped us become who we are today, be grateful for our time together and enjoy the grace of time passed. I am choosing to believe in the goodwill and love of all friends, even if they aren’t the ones we chose. Since agreeing to serve as Interim Chief in June 2023, he has proven himself to be a highly capable leader. I am confident his proven leadership skills, combined with his extensive police experience, drive, and strong work ethic, make him the right candidate to meet our city's needs.

Chief Burlie began his law enforcement career with the Hutchinson Police department and has twenty-four years of experience, beginning as a recruit and working his way up through the ranks to Operations Captain. He holds a bachelor's degree in Criminology and Sociology from Kansas State University and has undergone extensive command-level training from Wichita State University, Kansas University, and Northwestern University. Additionally, he was selected by the FBI to attend Session 291 of the FBI National Academy. These qualifications and experience have equipped him with the essential knowledge and skills to make informed and rational decisions as our next Chief of Police.

HAYS, Kan. — ELI Wireline is hiring for a Wireline Repair and Maintenance Technician for the Hays or Hutchinson facility. This is a hands-on, rewarding role where you will be performing wireline repair and maintenance in the oil and gas industry. Job Scope: In a workshop environment, this individual has responsibility for providing "hands-on" technical support to the production and repair of equipment and/or tools. You Drink. You Drive. You Lose starts Aug. 19

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The jury in a Reno County murder case did not return a verdict on that count after deliberating for several days.

According to Reno County District Attorney Thomas Stanton, the case against Sandral Wade&nbsp;went to the jury last Wednesday afternoon. The jury deliberated until Monday morning. 

The jury deadlocked on the first three counts (first degree murder of Orlando Gipson, attempted first degree murder of Landre Bowie and aggravated robbery using a deadly weapon), found the defendant not guilty of aggravated robbery - infliction of bodily harm, and guilty of criminal possession of a firearm. 

Stanton said the counts upon which the jury deadlocked will be retried on a future date. No sentencing date on the firearm count was given in Stanton's email to Hutch Post.

Water off in Nickerson Monday over lunch

CLOUD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges after a weekend arrest.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Friday, police responded to report of a burglary in the 600 Block of East 6th Street in Concordia, according to a media release.

The investigation led to the arrest of 31-year-old Adam Scott McConnell on a Reno County warrant for a probation violation and requested charges of attempted burglary.

McConnell is being held in the Cloud County jail. He has a previous felony conviction for criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Kansas Community Empowerment to honor Arlington clinic

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will hold a public hearing on the 2024 budget Tuesday, Aug. 15.

City Clerk Sara Howard said the budget was initially prepared to arrive at the Revenue Neutral Rate. That is the&nbsp;maximum levy without an additional hearing and an additional taxpayer notification.

The total budget is $2,073,403 for City and Rec Commission on $358,451 of ad valorem collections.

The City mill levy is 41.892; with the Recreation Commission at 1.478.

Wages for city employees were increased 5%.

The public hearing is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Buhler City offices.

City of Buhler to hold the line on taxes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital is cautioning dog owners to continue to provide preventative care for heartworm disease.

"Last time we were in, we talked about, we've had three cases so far," Miller said. "We've had another one since we were in last time. That's only been two months ago. Mosquitoes are out. I get, a lot of the time, well, you know, my dog is inside the majority of the time. They only go out to go potty. I always say, you know, when we go outside, for me, it's if I just go out to the garden or if I just walk out with my pets, the mosquitoes are on me. If they are on you, they are on your pets. They should be on that yearly heartworm preventative to protect them."

It's a real problem if the infection is allowed to grow.

"When a&nbsp;mosquito bites that is infected with heartworms, when they bite your pet," Miller said. "Essentially, when they go to take a blood meal, some of those worns can wiggle down and go into the bloodstream. Once they are there, they swim around and then they make it to the heart. Once they make it to the heart, that's where they turn into adults and they start reproducing. As they turn into adults, they get big and long, like spaghetti noodle size. The problem with that is, they are causing damage to the heart. Once the heart gets full of heartworms, they spill over into the lungs. Then we're causing damage to the lungs."

Heartworms can produce baby worms for up to seven years in a dog if left untreated.

"We can treat heartworms and we can get rid of them," Miller said. "It's more expensive than prevention, but the damage they have already caused to the heart and lungs, there's no fixing that."

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Erica Miller, DVM with Apple Lane Animal Hospital is cautioning dog owners to continue to provide preventative care for heartworm disease."Last time we were in, we talked about, we've had three cases so far," Miller said. "We've had another one since we were in last time. That's only been two months ago. Mosquitoes are out. I get, a lot of the time, well, you know, my dog is inside the majority of the time. They only go out to go potty. I always say, you know, when we go outside, for me, it's if I just go out to the garden or if I just walk out with my pets, the mosquitoes are on me. If they are on you, they are on your pets. They should be on that yearly heartworm preventative to protect them."It's a real problem if the infection is allowed to grow."When a&nbsp;mosquito bites that is infected with heartworms, when they bite your pet," Miller said. "Essentially, when they go to take a blood meal, some of those worns can wiggle down and go into the bloodstream. Once they are there, they swim around and then they make it to the heart. Once they make it to the heart, that's where they turn into adults and they start reproducing. As they turn into adults, they get big and long, like spaghetti noodle size. The problem with that is, they are causing damage to the heart. Once the heart gets full of heartworms, they spill over into the lungs. Then we're causing damage to the lungs."Heartworms can produce baby worms for up to seven years in a dog if left untreated."We can treat heartworms and we can get rid of them," Miller said. "It's more expensive than prevention, but the damage they have already caused to the heart and lungs, there's no fixing that."If you suspect your pet is sick, call your vet immediately.
