The fifty-first annual&nbsp; Pleasantview Spring Celebration is this Saturday.&nbsp;

The celebration used to be two days, but now it's packed into one day.&nbsp; Things start off with the pancake feed at the Pleasantview Activity Center that starts at 7:30 a.m and goes until 10:30 a.m.

Pleasantview has 22 businesses and all of them will be part of the celebration.&nbsp; Most of the businesses will be open on Saturday, but a few won't, but there will be information about each of the businesses at the pancake feed.&nbsp;

Pleasantview Spring Celebration this Saturday 

The Youth Philanthropy Council of Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded $5,000 in grants to nine organizations at a ceremony in March at the Hutchinson Art Center.

Led by high school students from across Reno County, the Youth Philanthropy Council is a grantmaking program designed to involve area teens in philanthropy: the practice of giving money, time and talents to help make life better for other people. The group began meeting in November to discuss local issues of concern to youth and the community, learn about grantmaking, and present grants to youth-serving organizations.

The grants were awarded from the Richard W. Dillon Memorial Fund for Youth Philanthropy, established by the Dillon family to honor Dick Dillon for his extensive philanthropic work in the community.

The 12 members of the 2024-2025 council are Claudia Taylor and Libby Trumpp, Buhler High School; Gavin Foster and Lucy Steen, Fairfield High School; Kayla Rose, Haven High School; Ellie Foos and Hollyn Neufeldt, Hutchinson High School; Will Barkley and Haley McGill, Nickerson High School; Mary Newboles, Ruby Tovar-Contreras and Sam Vogel, Trinity Catholic High School.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, $500: The grant will help purchase equipment and materials for the club’s Future Welders of Tomorrow program designed to introduce youth to welding and metalworking.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, $600: The funding will purchase equipment for the club’s Lyricism 101 program, focused on empowering middle school students through DJing, music production and lyric writing.

Hutchinson NAACP Youth, $500: The grant will purchase books for a book club established to promote cultural awareness, empathy and literacy among minority youth through the exploration of books centered on diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters, $425: The grant will help purchase supplies, food and beverages for game and craft gatherings between Bigs and Littles.

Nickerson High School-Debate &amp; Forensics, $425: Funding will help offset student costs associated with attending the National Speech and Debate Association national tournament.

Reno County Education Cooperative, $900: The grant will help purchase snacks, equipment, a sign language interpreter and lighting for the Soft Spotlight Theater. The is a project collaboration between Family Community Theatre, Reno County Education Cooperative and Clothed in Compassion to offer a sensory-friendly theater performance designed for children with sensory sensitivities and their families.&nbsp;

Sky Ryders Performing Arts Foundation, $300: The funds will go toward the purchase a portable gas generator to help amplify sound for the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps, a summer performance troupe made up of students from across the region.

Spark United Church of the Nazarene, $350: The grant will help purchase cookbooks for Kitchen Hero Academy, a 10-week summer cooking skills program for middle school students.

Trinity Catholic High School, $1,000: Funding will purchase a help guide, board games and snacks for a newly established peer-mentor program called Sources of Strength focused on resilience through student connection and support.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, leadership and collaboration to strengthen Reno County. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $104 million.

Reno County youth award $5,000 in grants

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 will open enrollment for the upcoming school year earlier than usual, Superintendent Cindy Couchman said Wednesday on the BW Morning Show.

“We’re going to change some things this year,” Couchman said. “We usually open enrollment at Buhler schools in July, and we’re going to change that this year for our families. We’re getting ready to push something out about it pretty soon, and we’re actually going to start enrollment in May this year, while we still have kids in the buildings.”

The district is moving up the enrollment timeline to get a better idea of who is returning in the fall.

Couchman said families will enroll in May the same way they have during the summer in past years — with one key difference: no payment will be required at that time.

Instead, in July, the district will send out a link for families to complete the final steps of enrollment. That includes paying enrollment fees, filling out the free and reduced lunch application, and completing the Communities That Care form.

"That's to help us as a school system know how many people we're going to have, get them enrolled, go ahead and assign teachers — all those procedures — and also help us with setting capacity," Couchman said. "And our capacity is going to be set quite a bit higher this year, which means we can take more students."

She encouraged families interested in enrolling their student in Buhler schools — especially those outside district boundaries — to complete the proper forms in order to be entered into the state-mandated lottery.

“If you're a homeschool student, an out-of-district student, or your student is moving into the area, we are setting our capacity high enough that we think we’re going to be able to take more students this year through that process,” Couchman said. “If you're an out-of-district student, a homeschool student, or a student who has been in private school and you’re not currently living within district boundaries, there is a new process.”

She explained that families must fill out a form indicating they want to attend Buhler schools. The state legislature established the open enrollment lottery process last session. Last year was the district’s first time using the system.

USD 313 announces changes to their enrollment process

As a first generation college student who is now a professor, I know firsthand the vital role libraries play in providing access to knowledge and opportunity, especially for those from underserved backgrounds.

At my university, nearly half of the student population is also first-generation, and like me, many have relied on libraries as gateways to education, technology, and personal growth. Though I didn’t grow up in the Sunflower State, my students have shown me how deeply public libraries support communities across Kansas, providing essential resources that foster learning, connection, and a brighter future.

In mid-March President Trump issued an executive order to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to the fullest extent possible — only Congress can fully close the IMLS as it was established by a Congressional act in 1996 — and directs the Office of Management and Budget to reject funding requests from IMLS. It is expected that Trump’s future budget requests will propose to eliminate the IMLS altogether.

This executive order puts essential library resources at risk, especially in rural and low-income communities. IMLS is the primary source of federal funding for libraries across the country and provides approximately $2.1 million in funding to Kansas public libraries annually.

With all 367 public libraries across Kansas relying on this funding, these cuts will have a widespread financial impact and deepen educational disparities across the state.

According to Ray Walling, State Librarian at the State Library of Kansas, the provided funding is “integral to the operations of all Kansas libraries. Our statewide… services could not be offered at current levels without this support.”

Some examples of how the State Library of Kansas uses these funds includes: to support the Summer Reading Program that provides summer reading materials to Kansas libraries, provide access to books for people with disabilities (e.g. Talking Books program, braille and large print books), statewide resource sharing through the Kansas Library Catalog (e.g. interlibrary loan), provide access to state documents via the Kansas Government Information Online Library, statewide access to digital collections of ebooks and audiobooks (e.g. Libby app), and the Kansas Notable Books program that recognizes outstanding titles either written by Kansans or about a Kansas-related topic.

In the past two years, IMLS also provided $10,000 to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation to expand the tribe’s reference library for those learning and studying the Potawatomi language and culture; just over $28,000 to Exploration Place in Wichita to provide professional development that led to expansion of the museum’s digital services, allowing them to reach every Kansas county and school district; nearly $50,000 to Independence Community College

to create a publicly accessible online catalog featuring significant playwrights, performing artists, and original manuscripts; and $71,000 to the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska for the purpose of identifying and documenting culturally significant artifacts and artwork, including creating a virtual repository of photographs and digitized art.

Kansas ranks second in the nation for per capita library visits, reflecting the deep value Kansans place on these essential community hubs. With such high engagement, it’s clear that libraries are not only centers of learning and opportunity but also key components of daily life for Kansans.

Dismantling IMLS isn’t just a budget decision — it’s a decision that will take books out of children’s hands, limit job-seekers' access to technology, and erase vital cultural and historical resources.

Public libraries are more than just buildings filled with books; they are community hubs that empower Kansans to learn, grow, and connect.

As Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” If we truly believe in fostering a future where knowledge and opportunity are within reach for every Kansan, we must work to preserve our libraries before it’s too late.

Adopt a Furry Friend: Sissy  -  ADOPTED

Ford Motor company started phasing out its flex fuel engine option with the 2024 model year F Series pickup.  But that's not setting well with corn farmers, and one in particular in Missouri. 

 Bradley Schad is actively trying to persuade Ford to reverse that decision. and get back on board with ethanol.  He believes that the company is more focused on changing the F series pickup to an electric fleet. 

 The Model Year 2023 was the last time you could get the five-liter V-8 with the Flex Fuel option. Recent regulations did away with the incentives that manufacturers had to build flex fuel and E-85 vehicles. 

 Republican Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley and Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer reintroduced the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act of 2025 in February.  If that would pass, it would enable year-round, nationwide sales of ethanol fuel blends up to 15%... Something that farm state politicians have been pushing for.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the southwest corner of East 3rd and North Maple.

In 1927, brothers W.R. and J.R. Cody were specializing in long-distance hauling and storage. They decided to build a very heavy-duty storage facility at 229 E. 3rd. The first photo shows the construction (close to finishing) that winter.

The structure housed the Cody Transfer &amp; Storage Co. until 1937.

In 1939, it became the Heazler Cartage Co.

In 1947, the Baldwin family purchased the building and it housed the Barnett Warehouse Co. between 1947 to 1968.

In 1970, Carl McCoy made it the McCoy Discount Furniture Warehouse but only for a year or so. The second photo shows the McCoy enterprise there.

In 1971, Bernie Wray bought the building and it became the longtime home of Wray &amp; Sons Roofing and Storage. Bernie Wray also stored his huge collection of vintage automobiles until his passing. The third photo shows the 229 E. 3rd building today, still the Wray Roofing business after 54 years there, and owned by Greg and Cliff Wray. The property is all part of the Wray Properties L.L.C.

The company’s roots trace back to 1950, when Edward Engler, a local accountant, recognized a major gap in the electrical trade. At the time, electricians in Hutchinson didn’t have a dedicated electrical distributor, which made sourcing supplies a challenge. Engler stepped up to meet that need, opening a store to provide the specialized materials electricians required. Since then, the business has continued to grow, evolve, and adapt, moving locations several times before settling into its current home at 100 W. 2nd in 1981.

For much of its history, Sunflower Electric focused on residential and light commercial work, even operating a showroom where customers could pick out lighting fixtures. But as big-box stores began dominating the home improvement market, the company made a strategic shift toward industrial supply, now serving electricians who work in power plants, gas plants, and other large-scale facilities. Today, Sunflower Electric stocks hard-to-find, hazardous-type fittings and industrial electrical components, ensuring that customers can get what they need quickly and efficiently—often faster than online suppliers. Sunflower Electric Supply named Hutch/Reno County Chamber Small Business of the Month 

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the City of Hutchinson said that they have reopened South Main Street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, Avenue E, one block on both sides of Main Street remain closed at this time.&nbsp; To help manage the increased truck traffic during the Woodie Seat project, Avenue F will remain a four-way stop until construction is completed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sidewalks along the site may open as early as Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan – The Special Education Department of USD 308 is excited to announce a resource fair on Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Salthawk Activity Center.

This event, designed for all families, will feature over 30 vendors and is made possible by the generous support of Dillons and Heartland Credit Union, who will provide light refreshments and door prizes. 

Attendees can benefit from Spanish translation services and childcare throughout the event. 

The come-and-go format allows visitors to explore booths at their leisure, and there is no need to RSVP or schedule appointments with vendors. The event is free and open to the public.

The Hutchinson Community Concert Association has started their annual membership drive.   

If you are a current member, check your mailbox as renewal letters have been sent out. New memberships are available from concert workers, or at First National Bank at Sherman and Main on April 30 to May 2 during banking hours. Season tickets are $60 for adults and $10 for students, K-12, or $130 for a family membership which includes two adults and all K-12 students living in the home. Katie McMahon is best known for her exquisite soaring soprano solo in the original River Dance. McMahon was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. She was classically trained in voice and harp. The Celtic Celebration will include Katie McMahon with the music ensemble and Celtic dancers. 

Live from Laurel Canyon - April 24, 2026, 9 p.m.

Live from Laurel Canyon presents an endearing evening of live music and narrated stories of some of the most influential songwriters who lived in Laurel Canyon, California, in the mid-60s and 70s.  They celebrate the music of the Mamas &amp; the Papas, The Byrds, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, and more. 

Hutchinson Community Concert Association has a reciprocal arrangement with the Golden Belt Concert Association in Great Bend, which allows Hutchinson Concert Association members to attend any of the concerts in Great Bend as well. 

The officers for the Community Concert Association are Jay Brown, President; Donna Pitzer, 1st Vice president; Betty Oliver, 2nd Vice president; Beth Hinshaw, 3rd Vice president; Mary Falter, Secretary; and Craig Johnson, Treasurer. 

All concerts will be held in historic Memorial Hall, Avenue A and Walnut, in Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Community Concert Association has a reciprocal arrangement with the Golden Belt Concert Association in Great Bend, which allows Hutchinson Concert Association members to attend any of the concerts in Great Bend as well. The officers for the Community Concert Association are Jay Brown, President; Donna Pitzer, 1st Vice president; Betty Oliver, 2nd Vice president; Beth Hinshaw, 3rd Vice president; Mary Falter, Secretary; and Craig Johnson, Treasurer. All concerts will be held in historic Memorial Hall, Avenue A and Walnut, in Hutchinson.

Hutchinson Community Concert Association starts 2025-2026 membership drive 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday approved a $20,000 annual contribution to support the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, a nationally recognized tournament held each March at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The request was passed 4-1 with Garza, Richardson, Meggers and Fast voting yes, while Goss voted no.

The funding request was presented by Dr. Christopher Parker, president and CEO of the NJCAA, who emphasized the organization's growing financial investment and the tournament’s increasing national profile. Parker first presented the request to&nbsp;City Manager Enrico Villegas last week.

“As we talked last week, the dynamics of the tournament — the ‘Road to Hutch’ — is something we’ve poured into,” Parker said. “I’ve been in this role for eight years now, and we’ve got some great partners in Hutchinson — the city, the American Legion, Visit Hutch — all working to make this event a success.”

The NJCAA has increased its own commitment, investing more than $65,000 annually into branding, hospitality, and media coverage. Streaming the tournament on ESPN+ alone costs about $30,000, Parker said.

“This is the only tournament out of our 57 championships that operates under this model,” Parker said. “We’re simply requesting $20,000 a year to offset the rising costs we've already taken on.”

Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Community Outreach Andrew Givens noted that Parker had met with Villegas ahead of the meeting to discuss the request.

Vice Mayor Scott Meggers asked whether the $20,000 would be subject to the same 80/20 revenue split between the NJCAA and the American Legion that the tournament typically follows.

“Since this is just a request to the city, we would basically put 100% of this money back into the expenses,” Parker said. “It wouldn't be a split, because that split is only for revenues. This would go directly into the budget to support the event here in Hutch.”

The motion to approve the funding was made by Councilman Steve Garza.

“I have no problems,” Garza said. “We put $20,000 in, it goes back into the city. We get it back through taxes, through hotels, so it’s a no-brainer for me.”

Councilman Jon Richardson asked Parker if any of the tournament’s branding efforts promoted Hutchinson specifically.

“Absolutely,” Parker said. “If you walk in, you’ll see the first big sign that says ‘Welcome to Hutch.’ If you saw the game — either live or on ESPN — the first thing you see is drone footage of Hutchinson and the Sports Arena. They talk about Hutchinson. That exposure didn’t exist two years ago.”

“I kind of look at the ask as being almost like additional sponsorship for marketing the city of Hutchinson,” Richardson added. “We’re helping offset some marketing costs for extra exposure.”

While most council members supported the request, Mayor Stacy Goss raised concerns about the lack of hard data regarding the tournament’s economic impact.

“My concern is that we haven’t been presented with the financial or tourism impacts in quite a while,” Goss said. “It’s probably just that we don’t, as a city, have those numbers. I believe the Chamber has them — things like lodging, sales tax, fuel tax.”

Parker acknowledged the absence of a detailed economic impact report.

“There is nothing I can present to you that shows the total income spent at restaurants and hotels,” he said. “My speculation is that, behind the fair, this is probably one of the top economic weeks in the city.”

LeeAnn Cox, vice president of operations and tourism for Visit Hutch, echoed that challenge, citing data-sharing limitations with the American Legion.

“To generate a full economic report, we need a lot of backend financial data, and until recently, the Legion has not been comfortable sharing that,” Cox said. “But we’re working with new leadership and with the NJCAA to put together a report for 2024 and hopefully one for 2025.”

Cox did provide one concrete metric: This year’s tournament generated 1,262 total room nights, with 787 of those in Hutchinson. The rest were in McPherson and Wichita, due to limited local hotel availability.

That could improve next year, she said, pending the reopening of a local hotel, which would add 68 two-bed rooms to the city’s inventory.

Looking ahead, Parker said the NJCAA Board of Regents will meet April 14 to discuss a possible expansion of the tournament from 24 to 32 teams — a move that would add two more days to the event.

“College athletics has changed drastically,” Parker said. “We’ve taken an old model and modernized it. Now we’re on ESPN. This tournament is getting national attention, and we want Hutchinson to remain its home.”

Hutchinson City Council approves $20K contribution for NJCAA Tournament

The Reno County department of Public Works has closed a stretch of Sun City Road in southwest Reno County.&nbsp;

Due to bridge repair, Sun City Road will be closed from K-14 to South Valley Pride Road until further notice.&nbsp;

There is no timeline for the reopening of the road.&nbsp;&nbsp;

County closes road for bridge repair

The Reno County Department of Aging has announced that they will have a series of presentations of interest to Reno County citizens.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The series of presentations begins on Friday, April 4 and is on each Friday in the Month of April.&nbsp; The presentations are at the Department of Aging and begin at 9:30 a.m.&nbsp;

The topics of the presentations are:&nbsp;

Friday, April 5 - Using Nutrition to prevent Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Cancer and Auto-Immune Diseases.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Friday, April 11 - Dementia - It's just losing your keys.&nbsp;

Friday, April 18 - Managing stress.&nbsp;

Friday, April 25 - Caregiver burnout and resources.

The goal of each presentation is to provide information on the services and providers that can assist with the topics covered.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;$280 million dollar grant agreement between the USDA and the Texas Ag Department will help farmers in the Rio Grande Valley.&nbsp; 

The farmers in that region have been hurt by Mexico’s failure to meet its water delivery obligations under the 1944 Water Treaty.&nbsp; Ag Secretary Rollins said a lack of water has already ended sugarcane production in the Valley and is putting the future of citrus, cotton, and other crops at risk.&nbsp;
