TOPEKA, Kan. — Kevin Irwin, Director of Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications, was named by Gov. Laura Kelly on Friday to the Kansas 911 Coordinating Council.&nbsp;

The Kansas 911 Coordinating Council was created by the Kansas 911 Act (K.S.A 12-5362 et seq) and is tasked with monitoring the delivery of 911 services, developing strategies for future enhancements to the 911 system.

Irwin's term will begin in July. Irwin will serve until 2027.

COTTONWOOD FALLS, Kan. — Symphony in the Flint Hills announced Saturday the launch of their 2024 Prairie Art Exhibit and Auction, showcasing the beauty and spirit of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie through stunning artwork.

From now until June 11, art enthusiasts have the opportunity to bid on over 80 captivating pieces online, supporting local artists while celebrating the unique landscapes of Kansas.

Each year this juried exhibit brings together a stunning collection of artwork inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of the Flint Hills. With a mission to "heighten appreciation and knowledge of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie," Symphony in the Flint Hills continues its dedication to preserving and celebrating this unique ecosystem.

"We are excited to present this extraordinary showcase of art inspired by the Flint Hills," said Sandy Carlson, Program Manager of Symphony in the Flint Hills. "Through the Prairie Art Auction, we aim to preserve and promote the beauty of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie while supporting our local artists."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Racing is back on the historic half-mile oval in Hutchinson. Salt City Racing LLC opened its 2024 season Friday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.&nbsp;

"We had a great night," said Phil Nightingale. "Hit my goal on race cars and we had over 2,500 in the stands!"&nbsp; <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/eccdd1ac-5cc0-4690-81d7-e3597a41ce28">In November of 2022</a>, the Kansas State Fair Board approved demolishing the half-mile oval racetrack.&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4ec532d3-3a09-4133-8d04-0a1c51feaf12">In January 2024,</a>&nbsp;the fair rescinded their motion to demolish the track after accepting a proposal from Nightingale of Mel Hambelton Ford.

There were more than a dozen Hutchinson natives who entered into Friday night’s races. Five different classes competed: Stock, URSS Sprints, Hobby Stock, Sport Mods and Modified.&nbsp;

Tathan Burkhart of Hays placed first in IMCA Stock Car. Scott Miller of Hutchinson placed third in stock car. Miller placed first in his heat. Larned Mayor and chief save our track supporter William Nusser placed 12th in the stock class.&nbsp;

Dakota Sproul of Hays placed first in IMCA Modified. Sproul placed first in his heat. Peyton Burkhart of Hutchinson placed fifth in modified and first in his heat.&nbsp;

Taylor Velasquez of Liberal placed first in IMCA Racesaver Sprint Car and also placed first in his heat.&nbsp;

Cody Williams of Minneapolis placed first in IMCA Hobby Stock and first in his heat.&nbsp;

Warren Huffman of Salina placed first in Northern Sportmod and first in his heat.&nbsp;

Each class was split into two different heat races. The stock and sprint class completed eight laps around the track in the heat races and modified, hobby stock and Northern Sportmod completed six.&nbsp;

For the A Feature (main event) the stock, hobby stock and northern sportmod completed 15 laps around the track and modified and sprint car completed 20 laps.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salt City has truly Grand Opening Friday

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp; The Harvey County Health Department and the Healthy Harvey Coalition are coming together on Sunday, April 28 for a new community Open Streets event.

Healthy Harvey Coalition Coordinator Lorrie Kessler said at a City Commission meeting in January that the idea is to take the street and turn it into a place for people.

"The idea is that this would be more open and allow people to congregate and make the street into a park for a while.”

The event is described as a free community-building event to bring together Newtonians of all ages and fitness levels to promote healthy, active living and social engagement. The idea is based on the annual Open Streets ICT event in Wichita.

The street closures will include the 100 blocks of East Fifth and East Sixth, Oak Street between Fifth and Seventh, and the intersection of Broadway and Oak.

The Health Department says the event will provide more than just opportunities for physical exercise – it’s an exercise in building community, cultural identity, and social engagement. The organizers are still working out plans for food trucks, vendors, and entertainment.

Newton Open Streets Event is April 28

RENO COUNTY—A veterinary service in Reno County is reporting another case of rabies.

On Friday afternoon,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/nvscares?__cft__[0]=AZW30lIKDqa6rfQCYG3NkIlWa441ZWleXtPybltiEf8z9ONna1ISzoEm5HcGJPMLdHfr8ru-6m662CoKS1IMe14G6eHOelYT67iGLjNVYOO-JpivlP1gvt_vbGMBZZJJZcmu1ZSvLzlbcTdacgqCQUYv&amp;__tn__=-]K-R">Ninnescah Veterinary Service LLC</a>,&nbsp;13408 S. Mohawk Road, Hutchinson, shared on social media they had just diagnosed a positive case of rabies in a farm cat.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/9458be37-85ed-4b62-8ca3-a50bce3834eb">A previous case in December</a> resulted in a human being bitten.&nbsp;

The clinic said it was a similar scenario to the December case, except with no humans in danger this time.&nbsp;

"One of eighteen farm cats started attacking her kittens and acting strange," the clinic said. "Rabies is a fatal disease in both humans and animals. Please get your animals vaccinated for rabies."

The clinic said the two cases are unrelated.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"We have rabies vaccination clinics  once a week in a different town for the month of April all in an attempt to get as many animals vaccinated as possible," the clinic said. "Rabies vaccine has been proven to be very successful at preventing the disease."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On April 18, a significant break occurred in the 24-inch waterline under Severance Street, between 17th and 23rd Avenues. 

Immediate repair efforts included the installation of a clamp on the damaged section. Unfortunately, the initial clamp was not able to completely seal the leak. A larger clamp has been ordered and is anticipated to arrive by May 2.

As a result of the ongoing repair work, Severance Street will remain closed. The city is targeting to reopen the street by Monday, May 13. 

"We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate the community's patience and understanding during this period," the city said.&nbsp;

Severance remaining closed for water line repairs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Salvation Army in Hutchinson is seeking competitors for the annual Donut Day Eating Contest. It will take place Friday, May 31 in front of the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 9 a.m.&nbsp;

"The Salvation Army in 1938 had its first Donut Day event," said Major Paul James. "It all stemmed back to World War I. The Salvation Army sent a whole bunch of ladies over there to make pies and cakes. Unfortunately, every good plan doesn't work out during those situations. They found out they had all the ingredients to make donuts, so they made donuts for the men on the front line."

There are several prizes for contestants to win based on how much money they raise.

"Besides eating the most donuts, each of our participants will have their own site that they can raise money online, for you to support them," James said. "The day of the event they will each have red kettles in front of them so you can encourage them to eat more donuts at the event."

This fundraiser helps send Hutchinson area kids to Salvation Army camp.

"Sports camp, music camp, character building camps, outdoor adventure camps, we just want to make it available," James said. "This fundraiser helps to ensure kids can go to camp. We take them to our Three Trails Camp in the Kansas City area. All the Salvation Armies in our region go there. It's $10 per child for each week of camp they sign up for."

It will take place Friday, May 31 in front of the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 9 a.m.&nbsp;"The Salvation Army in 1938 had its first Donut Day event," said Major Paul James. "It all stemmed back to World War I. The Salvation Army sent a whole bunch of ladies over there to make pies and cakes. Unfortunately, every good plan doesn't work out during those situations. They found out they had all the ingredients to make donuts, so they made donuts for the men on the front line."There are several prizes for contestants to win based on how much money they raise."Besides eating the most donuts, each of our participants will have their own site that they can raise money online, for you to support them," James said. "The day of the event they will each have red kettles in front of them so you can encourage them to eat more donuts at the event."This fundraiser helps send Hutchinson area kids to Salvation Army camp."Sports camp, music camp, character building camps, outdoor adventure camps, we just want to make it available," James said. "This fundraiser helps to ensure kids can go to camp. We take them to our Three Trails Camp in the Kansas City area. All the Salvation Armies in our region go there. Salvation Army looking for Donut Day competitors

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Independent College Foundation, (KICF), on behalf of its member institutions, announced Friday the 2024 Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship Recipients. 

The recipients are all full-time, degree seeking students on the cusp of graduation, and have each demonstrated excellence in academics, character, and integrity. 

Winners have encouraged their peers to build bright, dynamic futures, all while maintaining GPAs of 3.5 or above. Each will receive an award of $1,446.32.

Hutch Post area students awarded include:

From Bethel College, Claire Broxterman, a Biochemistry &amp; Molecular Biology double major from Lindsborg with a GPA of 4.0.

From McPherson College, Wendy Diaz, a Spanish major from McPherson with a 3.72 GPA.

From Kansas Wesleyan University, Hannah Farley, a Social Work major from McPherson with a 3.75 GPA.

From Bethany College, Katie Kueker, an Elementary Education major from Hesston with a GPA of 4.0.

From Central Christian College of Kansas, Amaleigh Mattison, a Physical Education from Hutchinson with a 3.75 GPA.

KICF President Matthew Lindsey, upon the announcement of the 2024 scholarships, shared, “The students at Kansas’ independent colleges are going to change the world for the better. It’s a privilege to support them in their endeavors and we’re grateful to Maud Wyatt for making it possible for us to do so.”

The scholarship was established in 1995 through the generosity of Maud Wyatt, whose bequest has supported the work of KICF and its institutions since 1961.

Area students win Maud Wyatt scholarships

KINGMAN, Kan. — Matthias Brand has been selected as the new Chief of Kingman EMS and Rescue. He will start Monday, April 29.

Brand said in a letter posted online, "With a background rooted in emergency medical services and a passion for serving communities, I am honored to take on this role and contribute to the safety and well-being of the community."

Brand has served as an emergency medical technician in various settings. 

"My journey has taken me from Goodland to Hutchinson, and now I am eager to call Kingman County my home," Brand said.&nbsp;

Brand is completing a bachelor's degree in Emergency/Public Service Leadership and will graduate in May.

Kids Day at the Zoo is Saturday

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The office of the Reno County District Attorney held an annual community candle lighting ceremony for National Crime Victims' Rights Week at the South Hutchinson Community Center on Thursday night.&nbsp;

"My office is dedicated to making sure that justice is being done and that we work with you and we talk to you and we communicate with you so you know what's going on in every case that we have," District Attorney Thomas R. Stanton in his opening remarks at the ceremony. "We don't make a move with negotiations or anything else without talking to you first and we have discussions with you throughout trial."&nbsp;

Guest speaker Melanie Watson shared her story of domestic violence with those in attendance. A candle lighting ceremony took place after. Victim-Witness Coordinator Sarah McReynolds who planned the event, said the event was very impactful.&nbsp;

"It's nice to be able to get everyone together," McReynolds said. "Everybody has different circumstances. They've all endured different things, you know, whether it's being victims themselves or survivors or having family members who were ultimately victims. But, I feel like it's very beneficial to get everybody together. That way we can share our grieving processes and share where we are and how we've handled those things."

"One of the greatest honors I've had in my almost 33 years now in prosecution, has been to help victims and to see justice done in cases," Stanton said.&nbsp;

HRHS online survey is live

YODER, Kan. — Nitrate levels have continued to be above allowable limits in Rural Water District 101, which serves the Yoder area. On April 8, 2024, a 3-year routine state sample was collected, which included nitrates. The level tested at 12.0 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas and Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems. 

The nitrate levels in water resources have increased in many areas which come from natural, industrial, or agricultural sources (including septic systems and run-off).

A test performed on August 12, 2020 resulted in a level above the maximum. Reno County received a precautionary public notice for acute nitrate violation from KDHE. A notification was then sent to the Yoder residents educating them about nitrates in drinking water. Subsequent notices were sent informing residents that bottled water will be provided, upon request, to any household with members at increased risk from the nitrates, such as infants under 6 months, nursing mothers, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as identified by a health care provider.

The district will continue the KDHE required quarterly samples and public notifications until this issue is resolved. We appreciate your patience.

Latest nitrate sample in Yoder still above EPA limits

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Economist and former Republican State Treasurer candidate Michael Austin said Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's veto of the tax plan that literally was unanimous in the Kansas House is easy to explain.

"I can explain it as a betrayal of the people's trust," Austin said. "Governor Kelly has turned her back on not only the constituents that put her in office, but even her own party. If you have a bill where both Republicans and Democrats are supporting this tax compromise, why would you decide that the best thing to do is to get in the way?"

Governor Kelly appears to want to keep three income tax brackets. The plan she vetoed would have reduced that number to two.

"While that might sound okay, at a deeper look, what you realize is that she's proposing a 3% tax on the lowest income Kansans, whereas the bipartisan measure had a 0% tax on the lowest income," Austin said.&nbsp;

Austin believes there will be an effort to override this veto.

"Laura Kelly claims that the bipartisan bill is too expensive," Austin said. "In reality, what she's talking about is roughly a 10% difference. What she has proposed is only 10% cheaper than what the House and Senate put out there. If you took a look at that over a longer horizon, we're still having a state savings of roughly $2 billion, that's after the tax plans would be put into place."

Usually, the first plan that both parties can agree on ends up being the most reasonable legislation that can get across the line.

 </figure>NICK GOSNELL Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Economist and former Republican State Treasurer candidate Michael Austin said Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's veto of the tax plan that literally was unanimous in the Kansas House is easy to explain."I can explain it as a betrayal of the people's trust," Austin said. "Governor Kelly has turned her back on not only the constituents that put her in office, but even her own party. If you have a bill where both Republicans and Democrats are supporting this tax compromise, why would you decide that the best thing to do is to get in the way?"Governor Kelly appears to want to keep three income tax brackets. The plan she vetoed would have reduced that number to two."While that might sound okay, at a deeper look, what you realize is that she's proposing a 3% tax on the lowest income Kansans, whereas the bipartisan measure had a 0% tax on the lowest income," Austin said.&nbsp;Austin believes there will be an effort to override this veto."Laura Kelly claims that the bipartisan bill is too expensive," Austin said. "In reality, what she's talking about is roughly a 10% difference. What she has proposed is only 10% cheaper than what the House and Senate put out there. HARVEY COUNTY—Crews were on the scene of a fire in rural Harvey County Thursday afternoon. 

According to a social media report from Newton Fire and EMS, C-Shift, Station 3, assisted Whitewater Fire on a rural structure fire in southeast Harvey County. 

No people or pets were injured in this incident. The cause of the fire was determined to be from lightning.&nbsp; Authorities released no additional details.
